AB - Sensory analysis is the best mean to precisely describe the eating quality of fresh foods. However, it is expensive and time-consuming method which cannot be used
for measuring quality properties in real time. The aim of this paper was to contribute to
the study of the relationship between sensory and instrumental data, and to define a proper model for predicting sensory properties of fresh tomato through the determination of the
physicochemical properties. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to the
experimental data to characterize and differentiate among the observed genotypes, explaining 73.52% of the total variance, using the first three principal components.
Artificial neural network (ANN) model was used for the prediction of sensory properties
based on the results obtained by basic chemical and instrumental determinations. The
developed ANN model predicts the sensory properties with high adequacy, with the
overall coefficient of determination of 0.859.

AB - Vegetable crops production should represent the source of healthy and safe food, which is the basis for human development and health. It allows intensive use of soil and earns a high income per unit area, certainly with greater investment and a lot of human labour. Production of health-safe and biologically valuable vegetables with known composition and quality in controlled conditions is becoming increasingly interesting to consumers. Therefore, land resources should be used as rationally as possible and with proper vegetable crop rotation, reducing the possible occurrence of harmful organisms and obtaining health-safe products. In vegetable production, crop rotation is the most often neglected basic preventive measure.

AB - Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum, L.) is one of the most grown vegetable in the
world because of its nutritional contribution, therapeutic and pharmaceutical value.
Its significance in nutrition is due to high content of natural bioactive compounds
such as phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, capsaicinoids as well as vitamin A, E and
C. The goal of this study was to determine content of total polyphenols, flavonoids
and potential antioxidant activity of different sweet pepper cultivars. The plant
material for this trial was methanol extracts of three different types of sweet pepper
fruit: bell pepper, kapia type and tomato-pepper type (one cultivar of each fruit type).
The fruits were collected at technological maturity. Determination of total phenolic
content (TP) was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total flavonoids
content (TF) was carried out using a procedure based on the flavonoid characteristics
to build metal-complexes with aluminium chloride (AlCl3). Antioxidant capacity of
methanol extracts was measured by 2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-
sulphonic acid (ABTS) assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The
type of sweet pepper with the highest content of TP was tomato-pepper. Bell pepper
showed higher content of TF in comparison with tomato-pepper and kapia type
fruits. Concentration of phenolic compounds in bell pepper fruits was higher than
content in pepper with elongated fruits but lower than values in tomato-pepper.
According to both of antioxidant assays, tested tomato-pepper type exhibited higher
antioxidant activity than the other two pepper cultivars analysed in this paper
probably due to the highest level of TP. This result suggests that phenolic compounds
can make a significant contribution to antioxidant capacity of sweet pepper fruit.

AB - Wild species are widely used as potential sources of resistance of tomato to late blight (LB) (causal agent Phytophthora infestans). The biochemical response of wild and cultivated tomato genotypes with different levels of resistance to P. infestans was assessed through the total phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidative capacity. In total, six genotypes were included in the research - three cultivated tomato varieties and three wild species. The wild genotypes Solanum pimpinellifolium S 220 and Solanum habrochaites had a significantly lower infection rate compared to the other tested genotypes. After disease assessment on the leaves, biochemical analyses were performed. Grouping of the wild accessions according to principal component analysis (PCA) analysis indicated similar reaction to LB infection. Furthermore, late blight trait is closer to cultivated genotypes. Although the phenolics and flavonoids have high importance in the reaction of tomato plants to late blight infection, these traits are not closely related to wild species and the disease. According to this study, the antioxidative tests that indicate a response of wild species to late blight infection are total antioxidant activity (TAA), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and radical cation scavenging activity (ABTS).

AB - One of the main challenges in pepper production is to enhance seed germination energy and germination, and to grow healthy nursery plants with strong root system. Trichoderma species colonize roots as they grow and provide season-long benefits to plants, which is why Trichoderma species are widely used as plant growth promoter agents and promoters of plant defence mechanisms. This study evaluated the effectiveness of seed biopriming with Trichoderma isolates for growth promotion of pepper plants in early stage and their effects on seedling physiology. Nine out of ten Trichoderma isolates positively affected root weight of pepper seedlings, while three out of ten positively affected shoot weight. Root and shoot lengths were mainly unaffected. Germination energy was positively affected by five isolates with up to 40% increase compared to the control, while germination was significantly enhanced by two isolates with up to 22% increase. Considering seedling physiology, two different strain-dependent modes of actions were expressed. Promising Trichoderma isolates induced formation and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which acted as signal molecules that increased germination energy and germination. Positive correlation was found between pyrogallol peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase activity and germination in plants treated with these isolates.

AB - Matthiola longipetala (Vent) DC, commonly known as "night-scented stock" or "evening stock" is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Matthiola in the family Brassicaceae. It is a common garden flower, available in a variety of colours, many of which are heavily scented and also used in floristry. An elevated incidence of Fusarium was observed during a routine quality control seed assay of M. longipetala obtained from a private production facility in Đurđevo, Serbia in 2018. To our knowledge, this is the first report of F. equiseti as a causal agent of seed rot on M. longipetala in Serbia.

AB - Due to the narrow range of available herbicides, weeds are one of the limiting factors for intercropping of dry bean and maize. Various benefits of this production method have been confirmed by the results of many authors. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using a cycloxydim-tolerant maize hybrid to expand the ability of weed control in intercroping systems with bean. Three-year field trials were conducted from 2015 to 2017, at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in the vicinity of Novi Sad. Cycloxydim-tolerant maize and dry bean were sown mechanically in alternating strips, with one strip consisting of 4 rows of maize and the other strip containing 6 rows of bean. Combinations of herbicides based on dimethenamid-P, linuron, bentazone and cycloxydim were studied. The effect of herbicides on the number of weeds, fresh weed mass and grain yield of bean and maize was evaluated. No phytotoxicity of the herbicides was observed on the crops, indicating the safety of their use in this production system. The most common weeds were Chenopodium album, Datura stramonium and Sorghum halepense developed from rhizomes. Herbicides had a significant effect in reducing the abundance and fresh mass of the above-ground weed parts. A special contribution of the results obtained is the unique ability to control S. halepense using the cycloxydim-based product. Owing to the above-mentioned possibility, a significant reduction in the number and mass of S. halepense shoots developed from rhizomes was achieved (100% in 2015 and 2016, and >90% in 2017). The results of our trials confirm the contribution of the extension of the choice of herbicides with cycloxydim in this system of intercropping with dry bean and cycloxydim-tolerant maize.

AB - Moldavian balm or Moldavian dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.) is native to temperate climate of Asia, but it was naturalized in Eastern and central Europe, North Africa, China and north-eastern United States. This plant with its citrus like flavor is extensively used as a spice and for composition of teas, because of neral and geranial as major constituents of essential oil. D. moldavica is used in food aromatization, perfumery, alcoholic drinks industry, soaps and detergents. Apart from being used as medicinal and spice plant, it is grown as a honey-bearing plant and cultivated in gardens and parks as an ornamental plant. Seed is a good source of fatty oil with spicy taste and aromatic odor, rich in unsaturated fatty acids, principally the linolenic and linoleic acids. This categorizes D. moldavica seed into the group of raw materials suitable for nutraceuticals, food supplements, and functional food applications. Furthermore, numerous investigations show that this plant possesses good antioxidative, antimicrobial and insecticidal activity. It is also used as antinociceptive, sedative, neuroprotective, as well as cardiotonic agents, and for treating chronic mountain sickness.

AB - Downy and powdery mildew are economically important diseases in all cultivated plant species. Pathogens Pseudoperonospora cubensis, Sphaerotheca fuliginea and Erysiphe cichoracearum are one of the limiting factors of successful melon production in agro-ecological conditions of Serbia. Cultivation of less susceptible and resistant genotypes against pathogens is the basis for successful melon production. Consequently, 30 melon genotypes were tested against the causative agent of downy mildew P. cubensis in the fi eld conditions. Also, the susceptibility of 4 lines originating from Ananas melon against causative agents of powdery mildew S. fuliginea and E. cichoracearum in greenhouse was determined. The lowest susceptibility to P. cubensis was expressed in the melon genotypes D11, D7, D13 in the fi rst and D30 in the second evaluation. The highest susceptibility to the mentioned pathogen was expressed in 8 genotypes in the fi rst and 15 genotypes in the second evaluation. In terms of the susceptibility of the tested lines to causative agent of powdery mildew, line A 2/1 was found as most resistant, and line A 3/4 as the most susceptible.

abstract = "Downy and powdery mildew are economically important diseases in all cultivated plant species. In terms of the susceptibility of the tested lines to causative agent of powdery mildew, line A 2/1 was found as most resistant, and line A 3/4 as the most susceptible., Prouzrokovači plamenjače i pepelnice predstavljaju ekonomski značajna oboljenja na svim gajenim biljnim vrstama.

AB - Bacterial diseases present serious problem in agricultural production which is
reflected in reduction of quality and yield of cultivated plants. Long term use of
copper compounds in bacterial diseases control can induce resistance in bacterial
population. Considering the economic importance of bacterial diseases on
cultivated plants the aim of this research was to tested different copper compounds
(copper-hydroxide, copper-oxychloride, copper (II) sulphate, copper (III) sulphate)
in different concentrations (100, 200, 300, 350 ppm) against one of the most
distributed plant pathogenic bacteria (37 strains) in vitro conditions. Obtained
results suggested that bacterial strains showed different sensitivity to tested copper
compounds and concentrations. The lowest sensitivity was observed in strains of
Pseudomonas syringae pv. morsprunorum race 1 (KBNS75; M25) and Erwinia
amylovora (JČ5, DHM1) in copper-hydroxide and copper-oxychloride. Strains of
Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap1-5) and X. campestris pv. campestris
(UR-1) showed the highest sensitivity to copper compounds compared to other
tested strains.

AB - Serbian botanical name for Lathyrus sativus is “sastrica”. Variety of folk names for
grass pea, such “šoder pasulj”, ”cicor”, “radan”, “sekirče” testify its past
prevalence in the diet of local population. Grass pea is usually consumed boiled,
combined with vegetables, with or without meat, or as a salad. It was nearly
forgotten crop and could rarely be seen on Serbian farms. Recently, grass pea has
been reintroduced in Serbia, mostly for the purpose of organic production. It is
especially important in diet of patients suffering from diabetes. For the purpose of
successful reintroduction, 11 accessions of grass pea cultivated in Serbia were
collected and evaluated. Part of the accessions are landraces collected from the
territory of Serbia, while several accessions were introduced years ago, mostly
from Herzegovina. Evaluated seed traits are: seed size (1000 seed weigh; seed
length, width and thickness), seed shape, seed coat surface, seed color and seed
coat patterns. Seeds were mainly of medium size with rhomboid or triangular
shape. The largest seed had an accession collected from locality Erdevik, laying on
the slopes of Fruska gora Mt. Accession with the smallest seed originated from the
locality Bački Petrovac. Six accessions had monochrome, mainly cream seeds
(except one accession with yellow-green seed) and smooth seed coat surface. The
rest of the accessions are mixture of two types of seeds: monochrome (yellowgreen or cream with smooth seed coat surface) and multicolor (brown, streaked and
tubercular seed coat).

AB - Genetic markers have been used at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad (tFVCNS)
for many years, both for seed quality control and for research purposes. The first laboratory in
Serbia that started applying the electrophoresis of isoenzymes was at the IFVCNS, in 1986. The
distinct advantage of laboratory seed purity control is that the seed can be inspected until the
next sowing at different stages, before harvesting or ripening, during or after seed processing. In
addition to conventional laboratory methods in identifying pathogens, serological and molecular
methods are used nowadays. The main feature of these methods is that they are fast, reliable and
suitable for analysing a large number of samples. Determination of the presence and distribution
of viral and bacterial diseases of paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) were performed using serological
and molecular detection. ln addition to determining the presence and distribution of pepper virus,
identification of the most important and most frequent virus isolates was performed using the
reverse transcription method followed by a polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Differentiation
of Xanthomonas spp., the causative agent of the bacterial pungency. of pepper, was carried
out using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the hrp gene (HrpB
region) and the PCR method, thus confirming the similarity of studied strains with the species
X. euvesicatona. According to the valid legislation in Serbia, commercial cultivation of genetically
modified organism (GMO) crops is not allowed. The laboratories involved in GMO analyses have
been accredited according to ISO I IEC 17025:2006 standard and ISTA standards, and authorised
by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management for analysis of seeds and product
consignments of plant origin from import. All laboratories use internationally recognised methods
and participate in testing the expertise for GMO analysis in inter-laboratory comparisons. Our
laboratory for seed testing has conducted several studies in order to demonstrate the presence
and quantity of Roundup Ready soybean in crude oil, assess DNA degradation, DNA amplification,
and GMO quantification during tofu production, to report on the validity of labels on imported food
samples from different countries and uptake of GM food derived from soybean into the food chain
in Serbia.

AB - The resistance of two sweet pepper varieties (cultivar Anita and breeding line 82/16) to fruit root caused by fungus Alternaria alternata was evaluated. In order to determine the antioxidant capacity of methanol extracts of tested fruits as well as their relation with phenolic compounds three different antioxidant tests were used and the content of total polyphenols and total flavonoids was measured. The results suggested that not only phenolic compounds might be involved in antioxidant activity of pepper fruits, but also carotenoids and vitamins C and E

AB - A large amount of organic matter is formed during vegetable production. A part of the created organic matter is in the form of plant parts that are used in human consumption. Most often, those are the fruits of tomato, pepper, cucumber, leaves of lettuce and spinach, or root of radishes and beets, etc. The organic residue in vegetable production implies the biomass residues of annual and perennial vegetables species, stems, leaves, roots of vegetable species, stems of other crops, grass clippings, leaves, husks, as well as unused feed remains of farm animals, and manure. Therefore, our goal is to show the importance of composting organic garden residues from vegetable production, as a possibility of restoring a part of organic matter in garden soil.

AB - Symptoms of cloves rot of A. ampeloprasum were noticed during 2018 in storage conditions. 16 isolates were obtained (AMP1-AMP16) and according to morphological and cultural characteristics they belong to F. proliferatum (sex. stage Gibberella intermedia), species of Gibberella fujikuroi complex. To confirm morphological identification, total genomic DNA was extracted from mycelium of the 16 isolates by amplification of TEF-1a gene, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that was performed with the primer pair EF1 and EF2. Results presented in this article clearly indicated that the new host of Fusarium proliferatum as the causal agent of cloves rot is "elephant garlic" Allium ampeloprasum. Pathogenicity test was confirmed on Allium ampeloprasum cloves. Pathogenicity assays revealed that all isolates caused symptoms on tested Allium spp., like naturally infected cloves.

AB - The characterization of 41 common bean cultivars and landraces from breeding collection of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia, was done based on phenotypic traits and microsatellite markers. Phenotypic traits were chosen from Bioversity International descriptor list. In addition, main yield components were investigated. Analysis of phaseolin type revealed affiliation of cultivars and landraces to Mesoamerican or Andean gene pool. Cultivars and landraces demonstrated significant diversity level with regard to studied phenotypic traits. Identified variation showed high potential for developing new cultivars with desirable combination of traits. Principal component analysis based on phenotypic traits separated bean cultivars and landraces in two groups, which corresponded to Mesoamerican and Andean determined according to phaseolin type. Putative hybrids, with combination of traits between gene pools were also identified. Analysis of microsatellite data, using twenty-two SSR primer pairs, showed medium gene diversity in studied material. Microsatellite-based cluster analysis separated genotypes in two discrete clusters and several subclusters. No clear separation according to gene pool was found between the clusters, however grouping according to gene pool and patterns of phenotypic variation, following these gene pools, were observed within subclusters. Knowledge on detailed relationships of cultivars and landraces based on phenotypic and molecular data would facilitate identification of candidates for future breeding.

AB - Beans and maize used to be grown in intercropping. With development of maize
hybrids tolerant to cycloxydim, it is possible to grow them in intercropping again, with
weed control including perennial grass weeds, thus applying selective herbicides for
both crops. Bean yield variations (cultivar Maksa) are shown in this paper. Cultivar was
sown in alternate bands with maize (NS 444 ultra, tolerant to cycloxydim) depending on
methods of weed control (without and with hoeing and three herbicide treatments) and
weather conditions during two growing seasons of bean. Combined application of
herbicides after sowing, before emergence and during growing season showed better,
especially in a year less favourable for bean development.

AB - In 2018, a total of 58 mustard samples from two different localities in Serbia (Rimski Šančevi and Senta) were collected and tested for the presence of Turnip yellow virus (TuYV), Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) and Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) by DAS-ELTSA. TuYV was serologically detected in 42 tested samples while all collected samples were negative for CaMV and TuMV. By using aphid transmission tests, five test plants were inoculated with two ELTSApositive TuYV samples of naturally infected mustard plants. Virus species identification was performed by amplification of a 780 bp fragment in all tested samples using the specific primers TuYVorf0F/TuYVorf0R. The RTPCR products from two isolates 88Sal (MK144816) and 98Bni (MK144817) were sequenced and compared with the GenBank sequences of TuYV. Serbian isolates showed the highest identity with Poland TuYV isolate (EU022489). Phylogenetic analysis showed that TuYV isolates from Serbia were clustered with other TuYV sequences retrieved from the GenBank.

AB - Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) is native to Southern Europe and is cultivated worldwide, as ornamental, as well as essential oil bearing plant.Clary sage is well known for its high value essential oil, widely used in perfumery. Besides, the oil possesses high biological activity and because of that is used against stress, tension, depression, insomnia, etc. However, traditionally clary sage oil was used an agent against gingivitis, stomatitis and aphthae. Apart of that, recent studies reported analgesic, anti-inflamatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and cytotoxic effects. Studies on clary sage seed fatty oil show that it is a good source of edible oil rich in omega 3-linoleic acid. Clary sage is also used in alcoholic beverages, as well as in tobacco industry. Novel investigations indicated that clary sage have great potential in agriculture because of phytoremediation, allelopathic and insecticidal properties.

AB - Vegetative propagation of garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a limiting factor not only for maintenance of genetic variability, but also for exploitation during selection. Local ecotypes of spring garlic that are highly adapted to agroecological conditions prevail in our region. Variability of spring garlic genotypes that are part of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (NS) and Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade (BG) collections was studied in this paper. Data about bulb quantitative traits for 71 genotypes are shown using several parameters of descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of principal components (PC). Presence of genotypes with extreme values of determined traits was the cause of using robust version of the principal component analysis (r-PC).

AB - The diversity of fruit traits and pungency level in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) are very important
for consumers. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate phenotypic fruit traits and content of
capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin in nine hot pepper genotypes (five varieties and four breeding lines)
originating from Serbia. A field trial was conducted on chernozem soil in 2017 at the Institute of Field
and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) in Novi Sad, Serbia. The experiment was established in a randomized
block design with two replications and 20 plants per replicate. Six quantitative fruit traits (weight,
length, diameter, index, pericarp thickness, and total soluble solids) were used for fruit
characterization. Ten fruits in technological maturity were analysed per genotype, and dried. The
sample of each dry pepper was ground and 1 g was prepared for capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin
analysis into GC-MS. The pungency levels were calculated in Scoville heat units.
The longest fruits (22.12 cm and 19.80 cm) had breeding lines 243/17 and 238/17 respectively, while
the fruit length of other genotypes ranged from 6.15 to 15.83 cm. Variety Somborka had the highest
pericarp thickness and fruit weight. Total soluble solids (TSS) in all genotypes varied between 4.12 -
8.16 °Brix, however, the highest TSS were noted in three genotypes which belong to small pepperoni
fruit type. According to performed analysis, the lowest capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin contents were
measured in Somborka variety, while the new variety NS Vatrena had the highest dihydrocapsaicin
content and pungency.

abstract = "The diversity of fruit traits and pungency level in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) are very important
for consumers.
Total soluble solids (TSS) in all genotypes varied between 4.12 -
8.16 °Brix, however, the highest TSS were noted in three genotypes which belong to small pepperoni
fruit type. According to performed analysis, the lowest capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin contents were
measured in Somborka variety, while the new variety NS Vatrena had the highest dihydrocapsaicin
content and pungency.",
