AB  - Effects of Azotobacter chroococcum inoculation on sugar beet production characteristics and microbiological status in the soil were studied on three different methods of sugar beet inoculation with Azotobacter chroococcum strains. The variety Drena was used in the study. Experiments were carried out at Rimski Sancevi in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Five strains of Azotobacter chroococcum were used as microbial inoculants. Three inoculation methods were applied: (A) strain incorporation into the soil before planting, (B) strain application on soil surface before the first inter-row cultivation and (C) seed inoculation before planting. All five Azotobacter chroococcum strains, in each of the three application methods, showed a positive effect on the production characteristics of sugar beet. The highest yield increases in root (6.45 t ha(-1)) and sugar (0.63 t ha(-1)) was obtained on seed inoculated with strain 10.

Meiose analyses of sugar beet triploids

AB  - During the seed crop growing there can be also problems with uncontrolled pollination if in the previous years there was seed shedding during the harvest, which can cause growth and flowering of diploid, triploid and tetraploid plants and that can present serious problem for the next sugar beet seed crop. Meiosis of triploid hybrids is irregular and can result in development of gametes with different chromosome number. Sugar beet triploids in metaphase I have 9 univalents and 9 bivalents and therefore can be source of aneuploid gametes. After cytological analysis that was performed on 2124 meiocytes, in 14.64% different types of irregularities were detected, such as dislocated chromosomes and chromosome bridges.
AB  - U semenskoj proizvodnji triploida šećerne repe u toku žetve dolazi do osipanja semena. Zbog toga u narednih nekoliko godina niču triploidne i tetraploidne biljke. Cilj rada je bio da se uradi citogenetska analiza nepravilnosti u mejozi kod triploidne hibridne sorte šećerne repe. Triploidi šećerne repe u Metafazi I imaju 9 univalenata i 9 bivalenata i mogu da budu izvor aneuploidnih gameta. Pojava aneuploida kao i njihova posledica delimična ili potpuna sterilnost, jesu problemi koji prate semensku proizvodnju šećerne repe. Acetokarmin squash metodom pregledano je ukupno 2124 mejocita, kod kojih su u 14,64% ustanovljene različite nepravilnosti. Konstatovane su nepravilnosti tipa dislociranih hromozoma, ubrzanih (izbeglih) i usporenih (izostalih), kao i hromozomski mostovi.

AB  - Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are a group of diverse soil bacteria which stimulate the growth of the host plant. It has been shown that Azotobacter chroococcum may be used as biofertilizer for increasing the yield and improving technological characteristics of sugar beet. The effect of three different ways of inoculation of sugarbeet with Azotobacter chroococcum on the production features of sugar beet and microbiological status of rhizosphere soil has been tested. One variety of sugar beet, Drena, was included in the tests in the region Rimski Šančevi, Novi Sad, during 2008 and 2009. Five strains of Azotobacter chroococcum (1, 5, 8, 10 and 14) were used as microbiological fertilizers. There were three variations of inoculation: (A) incorporation in the soil, (B) before the fi rst cultivation, and (C) applying the liquid culture of strain on the seed before sowing. The highest increase in yield of sugar beet roots 6.25 t ha-1 and yield of white sugar 0.91 t ha-1 was achieved with strain 10 with variant of inoculation of soil before the first cultivation. In both years, a positive effect of Azotobacter chroococcum was observed on the total number of microorganisms in the rhizosphere.
AB  - Ispitan je efekat tri različita načina inokulacije šećerne repe sa sojevima Azotobacter chroococcum na parametre prinosa šećerne repe i mikrobiološki status zemljišta. U ispitivanjima je korišćena sorta Drena, a eksperiment je bio lociran na Rimskim Šančevima u toku 2008. i 2009. Kao mikrobiološko đubrivo korišćeno je pet sojeva Azotobacter chroococcum. Inokulacija je izvršena na tri načina: (A) inkorporacijom sojeva u zemljište pre setve, (B) inkorporacija sojeva u zemljište pred prvu međurednu kultivaciju i (C) nanošenjem inokuluma na seme pre setve. Najveće povećanje u prinosu korena od 6,25 t ha-1 i u prinosu kristalnog šećera od 0,91 t ha-1 dobijeno je sa sojem 10 na varijanti inokulacije zemljišta pre prve međuredne kultivacije. U obe godine dobijen je pozitivan efekat na ukupan broj mikroorganizama i broj azotobaktera u rizosferi.

Effect of biofertilizer application in sugar beet

AB  - Field trials were carried out in 2007 and 2008 on a number of commercial plots in Vojvodina in order to determine how the biofertilizer NS-Betafixin affects root yields, white sugar yields, and microbial abundance in the sugar beet rhizosphere. The use of NS-Betafixin resulted in a significant increase of yield compared with the control (untreated soil). The total number of microorganisms and azotobacter abundance increased as well, while the number of fungi and actinomycetes decreased. Overall, the application of NS-Betafixin can be regarded as a good tool for improving sugar beet yields both quantitatively and qualitatively. It may also reduce fertilizer application and production costs and is environmentally friendly.
AB  - Poljski ogledi su izvedeni tokom 2007. i 2008. godine na većem broju proizvodnih parcela u Vojvodini kako bi se utvrdio efekat primene mikrobiološkog đubriva NS-Betafixina na prinos korena, prinos kristalnog šećera, kao i brojnost mikroorganizama u rizosferi šećerne repe. Primena NS-Betafiksina dovela je do značajnog poboljšanja prinosa u poređenju sa kontrolom, tj. netretiranim zemljištima, a takođe je došlo do povećanja brojnosti mikroorganizama (ukupan broj i broj azotobaktera) i do smanjenja brojnosti gljiva i aktinomiceta na tretiranom zemljištu. Uopšteno, moglo bi se zaključiti da je biođubrenje, tj. primena NS-Betafixina dobar alat u poboljšanju prinosa šećerne repe kako kvantitativno tako i kvalitativno, može da redukuje primenu đubriva, tj. cenu proizvodnje, a uz to doprinosi poboljšanju životne sredine.

AB  - Rhizosphere appears as the most important niche for microbial activity. It is of direct relevance to nutrient cycling affecting plant nutrition. Rhizosphere can be defined as the root surface and the soil adhering to the root. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of inoculation with Azotobacter chroococcum on the number of microorganisms in the rhizosphere of sugar beet in dependence of fertilization. Field trials were conducted on a chernozem soil at the Rimski Šančevi Experiment Field of the Institute in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The sugar beet hybrid variety Sara was used. Inoculation of sugar beet was performed with a liquid culture of Azotobacter chroococcum strains, which was incorporated into the soil just before planting in the concentration of 109/ml. Differences were registered in population size depending on both the nitrogen dose and fertilisation method. On average, a higher percentage of increase was in the total number of microorganisms (35-118%) than in azotobacter population size (49-52.8%).
AB  - Cilj ovih istraživanja bio je utvrđivanje uticaja inokulacije sa azotobakterom na brojnost mikroorganizama u rizosferi u zavisnosti od doze azota i vrste đubrenja kod šećerne repe. Poljski ogledi su izvedeni u toku 2002, 2003. i 2004. godine na Rimskim Šančevima sa hibridnom sortom Sara stvorenom u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo. U radu je određivan ukupan broj mikroorganizama na zemljišnom agaru (razređenja 106), broj gljiva na Čapekovom agaru (razređenja 104), aktinomiceta na sintetičkom agaru (razređenja 104) i azotobaktera na podlozi Fjodora (razređenja 102). Inokulacijom je povećan ukupan broj mikroorgainazama (35-118%), broj azotobaktera (49-52,8%), i gljiva (7,5-19,7%). Broj aktinomiceta je smanjen inokulacijom (1,6-5,4%). Najveći broj azotobaktera dobijen je na varijanti bez dodatka azota, a najmanji sa 200 kg N/ha. Najveći broj gljiva dobijen je sa 100 kg N/ha, a aktinomiceta sa 150 kg N/ha.

On average, a higher percentage of increase was in the total number of microorganisms (35-118%) than in azotobacter population size (49-52.8%)., Cilj ovih istraživanja bio je utvrđivanje uticaja inokulacije sa azotobakterom na brojnost mikroorganizama u rizosferi u zavisnosti od doze azota i vrste đubrenja kod šećerne repe. Poljski ogledi su izvedeni u toku 2002, 2003. i 2004. godine na Rimskim Šančevima sa hibridnom sortom Sara stvorenom u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo. AB  - In vitro preservation makes it possible to maintain genotypes in an unchanged condition for a large number of years. With self-sterile genotypes, this method enables the use of recurrent selection for identifying genotypes with better combining abilities than the population average. By recombining selected superior genotypes, it is possible to obtain a new population with improved quantitative traits and combining abilities. The objective of the present paper was to develop a new population of the pollinator cultivar Lara from the progenies of superior genotypes kept in in vitro conditions. The monogerm hybrid cultivar Lara was developed through crosses using a monogerm male-sterile family with a narrow genetic base characterized by good combining abilities, tolerance to Cercospora and the possession of the Holly gene conferring resistance to rhizomania. The pollinator is a diploid multigerm population having tolerance to Cercospora and Rizor genes for tolerance to rhizomania. Used in our study were phenotypically superior pollinator genotypes contained in individual plants within the population. The newly developed homogenous clonal population was kept in a gene bank. A high propagation rate was obtained by stimulating axillary buds from the vegetative tissue of the inflorescence. Based on the hybrids' production characteristics, superior pollinator genotypes were propagated vegetatively and a new population of the pollinator Lara was developed.
AB  - U in vitro uslovima moguće je dugi niz godina sačuvati genotipove u neizmenjenom stanju. Ova metoda kod autosterilnih genotipova omogućuje pri menu rekurentne selekcije u identifikaciji genotipova sa boljim kombinacionim sposobnostima od proseka populacije. Rekombinacijom odabranih superiornih genotipova dobijena je nova populacija sa poboljšanim kombinacionim sposobnostima. Monogermna hibridna sorta Lara nastala je ukrštanjem monogermne muško sterilne familije uske genetičke osnove, dobrih kombinacionih sposobnosti, tolerantna na cerkosporu i sa Holly genom otpornosti prema rizomaniji. AB  - Vegetative in vitro multiplication is one of the most efficient methods for sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) propagation. The usual steps in this procedure are sterilization of explant, multiplication, rhizogenesis and acclimatization. In the paper is presented development of regeneration and multiplication techniques from different explants. It gives a detailed description of further micropropagation steps and presents necessary conditions for their realization. The paper also discuss different ways of micropropagation application especially in sugar beet breeding, but in other plant sciences as well.

AB  - In the forty years of seminars of agronomists, the genetic composition of sugar beet hybrids and varieties has been completely changed, mainly due to development of different scientific methods. Every change lead to increase of genetic yield potential for important quantitative and qualitative traits, or improvement of efficiency and profitability of production. Sugar beet breeding in Institute of field and vegetative crops always managed to follow European and world trends, in order to create hybrid and varieties whose performance was equal to hybrids made by international companies. Increase in yield potential of 2% per year in the last few decades, is mostly due to genotype improvement, which presents huge success of scientists involved in sugar beet genetics and breeding.
AB  - U proteklih četrdeset godina u vremenu trajanja seminara agronoma zahvaljujući rezultatima fundamentalne nauke mnogo češće nego kod drugih gajenih biljaka kod šećerne repe je nekoliko puta dolazilo do kompletne promene genetičke kompozicije gajenih sorti šećerne repe. Svaka promena dovodila je do povećanja genetičkog potnecijala rodnosti za najvažnije kvantitativne karakteristike ili do povećanja ekonomičnosti i profitabilnosti proizvodnje. Oplemenjivanje šećerne repe u Naučnom institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo je uglavnom vrlo efikasno pratilo evropske i svetske trendove u smislu stvaranja sorti koje po svojim karakteristikama nisu zaostajale za sortama multinacionalnih kompanija. U zadnjih nekoliko dekada povećanje potencijala rodnosti koje se duguje isključivo poboljšanom genotipu iznosi 2% godišnje što predstavlja nesumnjivo veliki uspeh genetičara i oplemenjivača šećerne repe.

AB  - In 2001 and 2002 seven sugar beet varieties with different level of rhizomania resistance were tested on five locations, for root yield, sugar content and yield stability. Analyzed traits depended on agroecological conditions and varied from 44.96 t/ha to 95.00 t/ha for root yield, 11.30% to 16.56% for sugar content and 5.08 t/ha to 13.54 t/ha for sugar content. Varieties Mara and Sara had the highest sugar content. High general adaptability for root and recoverable sucrose yield had variety Drena, while variety Sara had significantly higher stability for those traits.
AB  - Tokom 2001. i 2002. godine na 5 lokaliteta je ispitivano 7 sorti šećerne repe različitog nivoa tolerantnosti prema rizomaniji. Utvrđen je prinos korena sadržaj šećera i prinos šećera i po modelu Eberhart i Russell (1966) izračunata stabilnosti sorti. U zavisnosti od faktora spoljne sredine prinos korena je varirao od 44,96 t/ha do 95,00 t/ha, sadržaj šećera od 11,30% do 16,56% i prinos polarizacionog šećera od 5,08 t/ha do 13,54 t/ha. U sadržaju šećera prednost su pokazale sorte Mara i Lara. Visoku opštu adaptabilnost za prinos korena i prinos šećera pokazala je sorta Drena, dok je sorta Sara pokazala natprosečnu stabilnost za ova svojstva.

U zavisnosti od faktora spoljne sredine prinos korena je varirao od 44,96 t/ha do 95,00 t/ha, sadržaj šećera od 11,30% do 16,56% i prinos polarizacionog šećera od 5,08 t/ha do 13,54 t/ha. U sadržaju šećera prednost su pokazale sorte Mara i Lara. Visoku opštu adaptabilnost za prinos korena i prinos šećera pokazala je sorta Drena, dok je sorta Sara pokazala natprosečnu stabilnost za ova svojstva.",

AB  - The objective of this study was to assess the effect of inoculation on Azotobacter population size in dependence of fertilizer dose and fertilization method. Differences were registered in Azotobacter population size which depended on both, nitrogen dose and fertilization method. AB  - Increased yield of sugar beet depends on hybrids that are grown agroecological conditions and applied agrotechnic. Last years yield increasing depends only of genotype, in EC is 2% per year and is result of improved yield potential and disease resistance. This is great success for sugar beet genetics and breeding. Rhizomania is caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein (BNYW) which transferred by fungus Polymixa betae. Considering the yield reduction and changes in plant growth and development, rhizomania is economically the most important sugar beet disease. In the paper are described all known types of resistance-tolerance: Alba, Rizor and Holly type, and presented results of three year field trials on four locations. Four hybrid varieties were tested: Sara, Lara, Drena and Darija, accepted by Plant variety commission, Ministry of agriculture and water management Republic of Serbia and one experimental hybrid. There most important quantitative trais were tested and than compared with standard varieties. It could be observed that varieties did not significantly differ among themselves, which was to be expected since all four them are resistant to rhizomania.
AB  - Povećanje rodnosti kod šećerne repe u najvećoj meri zavisi od hibrida koji se gaji, klimatskih uslova i primenjene agrotehnike gajenja. U zadnjih nekoliko dekada povećanje prinosa koje se duguje isključivo genotipu, u zemljama EEC je 2% godišnje, što predstavlja nesumnjivo veliki uspeh genetičara i oplemenjivača šećerne repe. To povećanje prinosa ogleda se ne samo povećanjem genetskog potencijala rodnosti već i poboljšanjem otpornosti prema najznačajnijim bolestima i štetočinama. Jedno od najštetnijih oboljenja koje je do sada utvrđeno i opisano kod šećerne repe je Rizomanija, a najefikasnija mera borbe je stvaranje tolerantnih ili otpornih hibridnih sorti. Najnovije NS-hibridne sorte šećerne repe Sara, Lara, Drena, Darija i NS-Hy-031R koje su otporne prema rizomaniji u ogledima pokazuju visok genetički potencijal za najvažnije kvantitativne osobine.

Induction and micropropagation potential of sugar beet haploids

AB  - The aim of research was obtaining sugar beet haploids via gyno-genesis and their micropropagation. Haploids were obtained by ovule culture from fourteen diploid, monogerm, fertile genotypes. On the tested nutrient media genotypes exhibited different gynogenic potential. Eight haploid plant were chosen for further investigation and after development of first leaves put on micropropagation medium. The presence of cyto-kinin in medium stimulated development of axillary buds, while in some genotypes adventitious buds developed as well. Multiplication rate was not consistent, although number of developed plants grew after each sub-cultivation. Differences in plant multiplication started to differ after four subcultures. By testing of differences between correlation coefficients, i.e. multiplication rate during six subcultivations, it was determined that they significantly differ between tested genotypes.
AB  - Cilj istraživanja je bio dobijanje haploida šećerne repe putem ginogeneze i njihova mikropropagacije. Haploidi su dobijeni kulturom semenog zametka iz Četrnaest diploidnih, monogermnih i muški fertilnih genotipova šećerne repe. Ispitivani genotipovi su na podlogama sa različitom koncentracijom stimulatora rasta ispoljili različit potencijal za ginogenezu. Za dalja ispitivanja je odabrano osam haploida koji su nakon razvića prvog para listova postavljeni na podlogu za mikropropagaciju. Prisustvo citokinina u hranljivoj podlozi je stimulisalo pojavu i razviće bočnih pupoljaka u pazuhu listova, dok je kod nekih genotipova takođe došlo do pojave adventivnih pupoljaka. Porast broja biljaka tokom mikropropagacije nije bio kontinuiran iako je broj novostvorenih biljaka rastao posle svake sub-kultivacije. Razlike u intenzitetu multiplikacije biljaka počele su da se značajno ispoljavaju nakon Četvrte subkultivacije. Testiranjem značajnosti razlika korelacionih koeflcijenata, odnosno intenziteta mikropropagacije ispitivanih genotipova tokom šest subkultivacija, utvrđeno je da se one međusobno statistički značajno razlikuju.

Ispitivane su hibridne sorte šećerne repe otporne prema Rizomaniji koje su priznate od strane Zavoda za biljne i životinjske genetičke resurse, Komisije za priznavanje sorti pod nazivom Sara, Lara i Drena i jedan eksperimentalni hibrid koji se nalazi u ispitivanju. Ispitivane su tri najznačajnije kvantitativne osobine: prinos korena sadržaj šećera i prinos kristalnog šećera i upoređivanje sa standardnim sortama. Između tri priznate sorte nisu ustanovljene značajne razlike, jer se radi o sortama otpornim prema Rizomaniji. Pravilnost koja je u ogledima uočena ali nije statistički potvrđena je da sorta Lara ima naglašen sadržaj šećera, Sara je normalnog tipa a Drena ima naglašen prinos korena.

AB  - Rhizomania is caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus, which is transferred by the soil-borne fungus Polymyxa betae. Considering the yield reduction rhizomania is economically the most important sugar beet disease today. Reduction of root yield and sugar content can go up to 80%, if the susceptible genotypes are grown on the highly infected soil. In the paper are presented latest data about new virus pathotypes and new sources of resistance to virus and fungal vector. Production traits of latest NS sugar beet hybrid varieties SARA, LARA and DRENA, tolerant to rhizomania are discussed as well.
AB  - Rizomaniju šećerne repe izaziva virus nekrotičnog žutila nerava, a prenosilac virusa je Polymyxa betae. Rizomanija šećerne repe je jedno od najdestruktivnijih oboljenja do sada pronađeno i opisano na šećernoj repi. Smanjenje prinosa korena i sadržaja šećera kod osetljivih sorata na zemljištima sa visokim stepenom zaraze može biti i preko 80%. U radu su izneta najnovija znanja o postojanju novih patotipova virusa, a takođe su opisani najnoviji izvori otpornosti prema virusu i prenosiocu virusa Polymyxa betae. Pored ovoga date su detaljne karakteristike novosadskih hibridnih sorti šećerne repe SARA, LARA i DRENA tolerantnih prema ovom oboljenju.

Production characteristics of newly released NS cultivars of sugar beet

AB  - Studied in this paper were the production characteristics of four newly released NS cultivars of sugar beet (two standard ones and two that are tolerant of rhizomania). The cultivars Alina and Rama, which are used as standards at the Yugoslav Variety Commission, were used as the standards in our study as well. The experiments were carried out in four locations in the province of Vojvodina, two of which were rhizomania-free, with the other two being infected with the virus. On the uninfected soil, the standard cultivars Anastasija and Vojvođanka had a higher sugar content and a lower nonsugar (K, Na and amino N) content as well as a 10% higher sugar utilization percentage than the rhizomania-tolerant cultivars. In addition to its excellent qualitative characteristics, Anastasija exhibited a very high potential for root yield and significantly outperformed four cultivars in terms of sugar yield. At the infected sites, there was a significant drop in the root yield, sugar content and technological characteristics of the standard cultivars, causing a 60% loss of white sugar yield relative to the tolerant cultivars. The newly released, rhizomania-tolerant NS cultivars Sara and Lara exhibited a high level of tolerance to this disease and were on a par with the official standard Rama with regard to all the other traits under study. The best results were produced by Lara, which outperformed the standard by more than 5% concerning the white sugar yield. Our findings indicate that the soil on plots must be tested for the presence of the rhizomania virus so that the right cultivar can be chosen for each plot.
AB  - U radu su ispitivane proizvodne karakteristike 4 novopriznate NS sorte šećerne repe (2 standardne i 2 tolerantne prema rizomaniji), a kao standard su poslužile sorte Alina i Rama standardi u Saveznoj sortnoj komisiji. Ispitivanja su vršena na 4 lokaliteta na teritoriji Vojvodine (2 lokaliteta sa nezaraženim i 2 lokaliteta sa zemljištem zaraženim virusom rizomanije). Na nezaraženom zemljištu standardne sorte Anastasija i Vojvođanka imale su veći sadržaj šećera, niži sadržaj nešećera (K, Na i amino N) te su za preko 10% imale veće iskorišćenje šećera od sorata tolerantnih prema rizomaniji. Pored veoma dobrih kvalitetnih karakteristika sorta Anastasija je pokazala veoma visok potencijal za prinos korena i značajno u prinosu šećera nadmašila 4 sorte. Na zaraženom zemljištu kod standardnih sorata došlo je do značajnog pada prinosa korena i sadržaja šećera, kao i pogoršanja tehnoloških karakteristika što je uzrokovalo pad prinosa kristalnog šećera, u odnosu na tolerantne sorte, za preko 60%. Novo priznate NS sorte tolerantne prema rizomaniji, Sara i Lara pokazale su visok stepen tolerantnosti prema ovom oboljenju šećerne repe i u svim ispitivanim svojstvima bile su na nivou zvaničnog standarda - sorte Rama. Najbolje rezultate pokazala je sorta Lara premašivši standard u prinosu kristalnog šećera za preko 5%. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju na neophodnost ispitivanja zemljišta na prisustvo virusa rizomanije kako bi se za svaku parcelu izvršio pravilan izbor sorte.

Production characteristics of standard (susceptible) sugar beet varieties and those tolerant of rhizomania on infected soils

AB  - Rhizomania is a sugar beet disease caused by the Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus (BNYVV). Its vector is the fungus Polymyxa betae. This highly destructive disease is present in all sugar-beet growing countries. In Yugoslavia, as in most such countries, rhizomania is the most important disease of sugar beet. The use of chemical measures to control it is very expensive and crop rotation and improved cultural practice are not effective enough, so only the development and introduction into production of varieties highly tolerant (resistant) of rhizomania can secure a profitable production of sugar beet on infected soils. The existence of several different types of the BNYVV (thus far, three have been reported: A, B and P) and different levels of infection intensity on affected fields requires that the production characteristics of newly developed tolerant varieties be tested in small-plot trials before their introduction into commercial production. During 2000, we tested at the Rimski Šančevi site six varieties tolerant to rhizomania (NS Hy 8R, Luna, Puma, Rama, Rita, and Formula) as well as three standard varieties (Nera, Magda, Alina), which were used as the susceptible standards. The measurement of root yields and analysis of root quality were carried out on three dates at 30-day intervals beginning on August 15. The variety, lifting date, and their interactions all had a significant effect on all characteristics under study. The hybrid NS Hy 8R and the variety Rama were several times better in all respects than the susceptible standard, which indicates that the trial plot was severely infected by the rhizomania virus. The highest level of tolerance was exhibited by the hybrid NS Hy 8R, which outperformed all the other tolerant varieties with regard to all the characteristics under investigation. The only exception was the variety Rama, which had a higher root yield than NS Hy 8R.
AB  - Rizomanija je oboljenje šećerne repe koje izaziva virus nekrotičnog žutila nerava repe, a vektor virusa je gljiva Polymyxa betae. Ovo veoma destruktivno oboljenje prisutno je u svim zemljama u kojima se gaji šećerna repa, a kod nas kao i u većini zemalja predstavlja najznačajnije oboljenje ove gajene vrste. Korišćenje hemijskih mera borbe u suzbijanju rizomanije veoma je skupo, a plodored i poboljšane agrotehničke mere nisu dovoljno efikasni, stoga jedino stvaranje i uvođenje u proizvodnju sorata visoko tolerantnih (rezistentnih) prema rizomaniji omogućava rentabilnu proizvodnju šećerne repe na zaraženom zemljištu. Postojanje različitih sojeva virusa (za sada se navode 3 soja: A, B i P) i različitog stepena zaraženosti zemljišta ovim virusima, nameće potrebu provere proizvodnih karakteristika novostvorenih tolerantnih sorata u mikroogledima pre njihovog uvođenja u proizvodnju. Tokom 2000. godine na lokalitetu Rimskih Šančeva ispitivano je 6 sorata tolerantnih prema rizomaniji (NS Hy 8R, Luna, Puma, Rama, Rita, Formula) i 3 standardne sorte (Nera, Magda, Alina) koje su poslužile kao osetljivi standard. Utvrđivanje prinosa korena i analiza kvaliteta korena obavljena je u tri roka počev od 15. avgusta u intervalima od po 30 dana. Značajan uticaj na sva ispitivana svojstva ispoljili su sorta, rok ubiranja kao i njihova interakcija. Hibrid NS Hy 8R i sorta Rama višestruko su u svim ispitivanim svojstvima nadmašili osetljivi standard, a to ukazuje na visok stepen zaraženosti ogledne parcele virusom rizomanije. Najveći stepen tolerantnosti ispoljio je hibrid NS Hy 8R koji je, izuzev sorte Rama u prinosu korena, u svim ispitivanim svojstvima značajno nadmašio sve tolerantne sorte.

AB  - Levels of sugar and non-sugar (K, Na and amino N) depend on environmental conditions and cultural practices applied. At the same time, these traits are an important characteristic of every cultivar. A number of parameters are used to determine the technological maturity of sugar beet, but the main ones are sugar content and sugar utilization percentage, which is affected by the non-sugars. In the present study, the monitoring of root yield and the yield of the above-ground plant parts and the analysis of root quality were done at 15-day intervals starting on July 1 and ending on September 16, 1999. Used in the study were four cultivars and two experimental hybrids of sugar beet. The cultivar Crvenka mz and the experimental hybrid NS Hy 20 proved ultra sugary (on the last lifting date, they had sugar contents 16.28% and 16.54%, respectively). Going from the first to the last lifting date, the K and Na contents of all the cultivars decreased, especially in the cultivar Crvenka mz and the experimental hybrid NS Hy 20. In all of the cultivars. the ammo N content increased until the fourth lifting date (August 16), when it started to decrease. One hundred and fifty days into the growing season, thanks to their high sugar content and low level of non-sugars (especially K and Na), the cultivar Crvenka mz and the hybrid NS Hy 20 had considerably better technological characteristics than the other cultivars. The aforementioned characteristics of Crvenka mz and NS Hy 20 make these two genotypes more suitable for early lifting dates than the other cultivars.
AB  - Sadržaj šećera i nešećera (K. Na i amino NJ zavisi od ekoloških uslova i primenjene agrotehnike, a istovremeno ova svojstva su i bitna obeležja svake sorte Za određivanje tehnološke zrelosti šećerne repe koristi se više parametara, međutim osnovni su sadržaj šećera i njegovo iskorišćenje na koje utiču nešećeri. Praćenje prinosa korena : nadzemnog delà i analiza kvaliteta korena šećerne repe vršena je u intervalima od po 15 dana počev od 1. jula do 16. septembra IV99 godine. Za ova istraživanja korišćeno je 4 sorte i 2 eksperimentalna hibrida šećerne repe. Kao ultrašećernate izdvajaju se sorta Crvenka m: i eksperimenta/ni hibrid NS Hy 20 sa sadržajem šećera, u poslednjem roku vađenja, od 16.28% odnosno 16.54. Improvement of combining abilities of sugar beet population C-8173 using in vitro methods

AB  - The ultra sugary cultivar Crvenka mz, released in 1997, is a triploid whose parental components are the monogerm cms line A-0401 and the multigerm tetraploid population C-8173. The objective of our study was to select from the male parental component superior genotypes that are good combiners and thereby develop anew, improved population. Based on the phenotype. 400 roots of the C-8173 pollinator were chosen in the field. Later that year. 106 of them were selected on the basis of root mass and refraction. In the spring of the following year, each of these genotypes was transplanted onto a special plot with six roots of the female parental component A-0401. Hemp was used as the isolator. In vitro micro propagation from lateral head buds was used in the selected genotypes to carry out the recurrent selection process. In 1999. a small-plot trial with successful hybrids was established in which the hybrid cultivar Crvenka mz was used as the standard. Based on the hybrids' production characteristics, 20 superior genotypes were chosen, which were then maintained in vitro and propagated using methods of plant regeneration through the formation of axillary buds. Their hybrids have proven to be significantly better than the standard cultivar and will be used in further research to develop an improved pollinator population. The selected hybrids outperformed the standard in the following areas: root yield (by 12.2%), sugar content (by 2.2%. in relative terms), raw sugar yield (by 14.4%), and white sugar yield (by 15.0%).
AB  - Za realizaciju procesa rekurentne selekcije korišćena je mogućnost in vitro mikropropagacije iz lateralnih pupoljaka glave korena repe. kod odabranih genotipova. Metodama očuvanja in vitro zasnovana je klanska populacija oprašivača. Ultrašećernata sorta Crvenka mz priznala 1997 godine, je triploid čije su roditeljske komponente monogermna cms linija A-0401 i multigernma tetraploidna populacija C-8173. Cilj rada je da se iz očeve komponente odaberu superiorni genotipovi, koji su dobri kombinatori i na taj način dobije nova poboljšanu populacija. U cilju ispitivanja specifičnih kombinacionih sposobnosti oprašivača izvršena su test ukrštanja odabranih genotipova multigermog tetraploidnog oprašivača sa linijom A-0401. Ukupno je dobijeno 87 hibridnih kombinacija. U narednoj godini postavljenje mikro ogled gde je na bazi proizvodnih karakteristika hibrida odabrano dvadeset superiornih genotipova. koji su sačuvani in vitro i umnoženi metodama biljne regeneracije formiranjem aksilarnih pupoljaka. Njihovi hibridi su značajno bolji od izvorne hibridne sorte Crvenka mz. U daljim istraživanjima, odabrani superiorni genotipovi multigermne populacije C-8173 koristiće se u polikrosu za stvaranje poboljšane populacije.

AB  - Breeders of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) use a variety of conventional breeding methods and novel techniques striving to protect, maintain and expand the genetic variability of the crop, develop superior hybrids, and multiply their seed. In recent years, a new methodology of genetic transformations has been extensively used in sugar beet breeding. The new methodology is used with the intention of introducing desirable genes, those that cannot be introduced by the classical breeding methods or which take a lengthy process to be introduced due to genetic barriers occur­ring during crossing. Conventional breeding methods and genetic engineering methods have been used to improve the sugar beet genome by the introduction of genes for resistance to Cercospora, rhizomania and nematodes. Presently, genes that modify the carbohydrate metabolism and genes that confer resistance to the active substances in certain herbicides may be introduced only by means of genetic engineering methods.
AB  - Oplemenjivači šećerne repe (Beta vulgaris L.) koriste najraznovrsnije konvencionalne metode oplemenjivanja i nove tehnike sa ciljem: da zaštite, očuvaju i prošire genetičku varijabilnost, stvore superiorne genotipovi umnože željeno seme. Najintenzivnija istraživanja poslednjih godina vezana su za primenu genetičkih transformacija kao novih metoda u oplemenjivanju šećerne repe. Njihov cilj je unošenje odabranih gena za određena svojstva, koja se klasičnim metodama selekcije ne mogu stvoriti ili taj proces dugo traje zbog genetičkih barijera koje se javljaju prilikom ukrštanju. Do danas su u genom šećerne repe konvencionalnim metodama oplemenjivanja i metodama genetičkog inženjeringa uneseni geni za otpornost prema cerkospori, rizomaniji, nematodama. Geni koji utiču na promenu metabolizma ugljenih hidrata i geni otpornosti na aktivne komponente pojedinih herbicida u ovom momentu mogu se u genom šećerne repe uneti jedino metodama genetičkog inženjerstva.

AB  - Used in this study were 16 F1 hybrids of sugar and their parents. The roots were analyzed to determine sugar content and levels of non-sugars (potassium, sodium, a-amino nitrogen), and these data were then used to calculate the sugar utilization percentage. Correlation analysis was used to determine to what extent the studied traits of the F1 hybrids were connected with those of the parents. Sugar content, sugar utilization percentage, and potassium content of the F1 hybrids were strongly positively correlated with the same traits of the male parent (r>0.60), while their correlation with these traits in the female parent was very weak (r lt 0.15). Sodium and a-amino nitrogen contents of the F1 hybrids were equally positively, though not too strongly, correlated with the same traits of both parental components (r=0.32-0.42). Sugar content and sugar utilization percentage of the F1 hybrids were more strongly correlated with these traits in the tetraploid parents (r=0.88 and 0.89) than in the diploid ones (r=0.73 and 0.79). Potassium and a-amino nitrogen contents of the F1 hybrids were equally correlated with these traits in both groups of male parents, while the sodium content of the F1 hybrids was in a considerably stronger correlation with the same content of the diploid male parents.
AB  - Korelacionom analizom utvrđen je stepen povezanosti tehnoloških svojstava korena F1 hibrida šećerne repe sa istim svojstvima roditelja. Sadržaj šećera, iskorišćenje šećera na repu i sadržaj kalijuma F1 hibrida bili su u veoma jakoj pozitivnoj korelaciji sa istim svojstvima očevih komponenti, dok je njihova korelacija sa istim svojstvima majčinskih komponenti bila veoma slaba. Sadržaj natrijuma i a-amino azota F1 hibrida bili su u podjednako pozitivnoj korelaciji sa istim svojstvima obe roditeljske komponente. Sadržaj šećera i iskorišćenje šećera na repu F1 hibrida bili su u jačoj korelacionoj vezi sa istim svojstvima tetraploidnih očeva nego sa navedenim svojstvima diploidnih očeva. AB  - The effect of five Azotobacter chroococcum strains and nitrogen content in nutrient media on callus growth of two Beta vulgaris L. cultivars were investigated, as well as the activity of nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) in inoculated callus tissue. On medium with full nitrogen content (1 N) the inoculation with A. chroococcum strain A(2) resulted in the highest calli mass, while strains A(8) and A(14) maximally increased NR activity. On media with 1/8 N the highest effect on calli growth, GS and GDH activity had the strain A(8). The strain A(2/1) significantly increased callus proliferation on medium without N. Asymbiotic association between sugar beet calli and Azotobacter depended on genotype/strain interaction and was realised in presence of different nitrogen levels.
