AB - Isoflavones are phytoestrogens with various types of biological activity. Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is the most abundant source of isoflavones in human nutrition. The present study aims to classify the different soybean genotypes according to their isoflavone contents. HPLC analysis of isoflavone content in 22 soybean genotypes was performed. The average content of individual isoflavones in the genotypes analyzed ranged from 2.8 mu g/g to 1069,9 mu g/g while the most abundant component among the 22 genotypes was malonyl-genistin. The majority of isoflavones had a significantly higher concentration (p lt 0.05) in the hybrid genotypes compared to parental genotypes implying heterosis. The principal component analysis (PCA) on isoflavone content and composition, including results in 83 genotypes, was conducted. The contents of daidzein and genistein were positively correlated, which could be explained by their biosynthetic pathways. Using the PCA, analyzed genotypes divided into six coherent groups regarding their specific isoflavone content. Malonyl-genistin and malonyl-daidzin were the most abundant components. Moreover, the significance of the cultivation year on the isoflavone content in soybean was pointed out. The overall results suggested the possibility of selection of suitable soybean extracts according to the content of malonyl-genistin.

AB - Many studies show that in the last 20 years, the increase in production per hectare has been achieved mainly due to the creation of new varieties and the development of plant breeding. Innovations in plant breeding are the main way to find new traits, values and tolerances, which are the only ones that can respond to the increased demand for yield and more efficient production. In addition to high and stable yields, it is very important that the soybean seed has a satisfactory technological quality. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine how the application of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) affected the protein yield of soybean seed depending on the year, exposure time and frequency. The field trials were conducted in the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia in 2010-2013. For this research, the seeds of a medium-sized variety Valjevka exposed to a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) using a pulse generator and a strip applicator were used. A low frequency pulsed electromagnetic field (16, 24, 30, 72 Hz) was used at the exposure times of 0, 30, 60, and 90 minutes. The results of the research show that the application of this method can increase the yield of protein in soybean seed for more than 20%, which is a significant increase, especially in organic production, where the use of seed treatment agents is very restricted. However, this measure can also have an inhibitory effect if an adverse combination of exposure time and frequency strength is selected.

AB - Experiment was conducted in 2014, 2015 and 2016 at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia, to study the effects of water deficit treatments during a soybean reproductive stage. Two water deficit treatments were conducted T-1 (from beginning of blossom to seed maturation) and T-2 (from beginning of seed filling to seed maturation period) and control (no water deficit). The results showed that water deficit during seed formation has a significant effect on germination energy, germination precentage and abnormal seedling. Obtained results are of great importance for farmers, because under favorable conditions, a large number of abnormal seedling has the ability to sprout, reach the reproductive stage and participate in yield formation.

AB - In the study attempts to analyze soybean production and possibility obtaining biogas from soybean biomass, in order to obtain energy inputs into the profit function and realized a circular economy. This paper presents the results of five-year studies of soybean production analysis in the world and in Serbia, and was also examined soybeans morphoproductive characteristics and on the biogas yield, of the Favorit variety, produced in Pančevo, Serbia. Serbia has excellent conditions for soybeans production. The maximum soybean biomass yield of soybean variety Favorit was 5 t ha-1. The average biogas yield, for tested five years, was 368 m3ha-1. The biogas yield was in positive statistically significant correlations on the plant height (r=0.65*) and in positive correlations with biomass yield. Soybean cultivar with their characteristics justify the sowing and can be used as a raw material in bio-fuels production.

AB - Seed germination and seedling growth are the most sensitive plant stages towards salinity. Various techniques can improve emergence and stand formation under salt conditions. Seeds priming is one of the most frequently used technique. Seed priming could develop different defence mechanisms of seeds against salinity stress. This experiment aims to examine the seed priming into potassium nitrate - KNO3 (1%), ascorbic acid - ASA (100mgl(-1)) and potassium chloride - KCl (1%) solutions, that may reduce harmful effects of salinity stress. Salinity was imposed by treatment of seeds with different concentrations of NaCl [0 (control), 50, 100, 200m MNaCl]. All data were analysed statistically by three-way ANOVA. Individual testing of probability was carried out using Tukey's method p lt = 0.05 and p lt = 0.01. Correlation dependence was determined using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Test results demonstrated positive effect of seed priming. This was showed by improved soybean seed quality and increased seed germination rate. The intensity of lipid peroxidation, free proline concentration and Na+ was decreased, while K+ in seedlings increased due to priming treatment. Priming of seeds into ASA solution resulted in increased vitamin C concentration, while priming into KNO3 and KCl solutions reduced the content of vitamin C in soybean seedlings.

AB - The aim of the study was to examine the effects of management practice on microbial properties of soil under soybean production. The study included
180 samples of soil under certified organic soybean production and 80 samples in conventional production system. An abundance of the examined microbial groups was assessed using the indirect dilution method, followed by plating of soil suspension on different selective media, while dehydrogenase and β-glucosidase activity was measured spectrophotometrically. Our data indicated that the management practice affected the structure and activity of microbial communities. A significant positive effect of organic farming on Azotobacter spp., free N-fixers and abundance of actinomycetes was identified. The influence of management system for the total number of bacteria, ammonifiers and fungi was not observed. Significantly higher dehydrogenase and β-glucosidase activity was
recorded in the soils under organic farming compared to the conventional farming. The obtained results showed an increase in organic matter content, associated with organic soil management, and its positive correlation with soil microbial properties.

AB - Flame-weeding is a very useful method for weed control, especially in organic production where the use of herbicides is prohibited. With this method heat
suppresses weeds in row within a second. Apart from this, heat also affects
growing crop plants and surrounding soil. The aim of this paper was to determine the effect of different propane doses, on photosynthetic and polyphenolic (total flavonoids and anthocyаnins) pigments in soybean leaves, as well as the number of microorganisms in the soil. Soybean plants exposed to flame showed a different reaction to high temperature stress, which was reflected in different content of analyzed biochemical parameters, but the most responsive were anthocyanins. Actinomycetes turned out to be the most sensitive group of soil microorganisms affected by weed flaming, while fungi were the most tolerant.

AB - Moldavian balm or Moldavian dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.) is native to temperate climate of Asia, but it was naturalized in Eastern and central Europe, North Africa, China and north-eastern United States. This plant with its citrus like flavor is extensively used as a spice and for composition of teas, because of neral and geranial as major constituents of essential oil. D. moldavica is used in food aromatization, perfumery, alcoholic drinks industry, soaps and detergents. Apart from being used as medicinal and spice plant, it is grown as a honey-bearing plant and cultivated in gardens and parks as an ornamental plant. Seed is a good source of fatty oil with spicy taste and aromatic odor, rich in unsaturated fatty acids, principally the linolenic and linoleic acids. This categorizes D. moldavica seed into the group of raw materials suitable for nutraceuticals, food supplements, and functional food applications. Furthermore, numerous investigations show that this plant possesses good antioxidative, antimicrobial and insecticidal activity. It is also used as antinociceptive, sedative, neuroprotective, as well as cardiotonic agents, and for treating chronic mountain sickness.

AB - Legumes are protein plants, an excellent source of nutrients for humans and domestic animals, raw material for many industries and fertility improvers. The cultivation of legumes reduces the use of expensive mineral fertilizers and reduces environmental pollution. The aim of this research is to summarize many years of research on the possibility of increasing the yield of legumes without the use of mineral fertilizers. Increasing the yield by using effective microorganisms, NS Nitragin, nettle extract or nettle and daisy, manure, harvesting of crop residues or using pulsed electromagnetic fields shows the importance of legumes in agricultural production in order to protect the environment.

AB - Genomic selection is a valuable breeding tool that has a great potential for implementation in a real breeding program, as long as prediction model performance is carefully evaluated for each specific scenario. The performance of genomic prediction models has been commonly evaluated by standard cross-validation that can lead to an overestimation of the model performance, by using the same genetic material and their performances that were included in the model development. Besides cross-validation, this study explored the efficiency of yield prediction models for soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) by using historical data for external model validation. Historical data represents a valuable source for evaluation of model performance, simulating the real breeding process. In general, results indicate a modest influence of statistical model and marker number on the prediction ability cross-validation and external validation. In both considerations, non-parametric random forest (RF) model showed an overestimation of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs). Overall, genomic prediction ability for soybean yield for historical data across years was relatively high (0.60), implicating that the model has the potential to predict broad adaptation of breeding lines. The model, however, had variable ability to predict phenotypic performance in separate years, with especially high prediction ability in years not impacted by yield-limiting factors, when the genetic potential was fully achieved. General improvement of model performance in both cross-validation and external validation was achieved by increasing the phenotyping intensity that must reflect the target environment variability in terms of different climatological conditions.

AB - The purpose of this paper was to compare quality of seeds of two black and yellow soybean and the response of plants developed from these seeds to oxidative stress during vegetation and reproduction period. Content of carbohydrates: cellulose, starch, total and reduced sugars, as well as oil and protein content varied among all varieties, irrespective the colour. Bearing in mind all differences in seed quality, as well as response to oxidative stresses during development, black cultivars could be proposed as an excellent source of phenolic compounds (flavan-3-ols, antocyanins, genistein, glycitein, quercetin, laricitrin and isorhamnetin derivatives). Due to extreme fluctuation in precipitation amounts in the last years, information on the better performance of soybean varieties in oxidative stress conditions is of great importance to organic and conventional production of this cultivar.

AB - Isoflavones are a group of phytoestrogens, naturally-occurring substances important for their role in human health. Legumes, particularly soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), are the richest source of isoflavones in human diet. Since there is not much current data on genetics of isoflavones in soybean, particularly in the aglycone form, elucidation of the mode of inheritance is necessary in order to design an efficient breeding strategy for the development of high-isoflavone soybean genotypes. Based on the isoflavone content in 23 samples of soybeans from four different maturity groups (00, 0, I and II), three crosses were made in order to determine the inheritance pattern and increase the content of total isoflavones and their aglycone form. Genotype with the lowest total isoflavone content (NS-L-146) was crossed with the low-(NS Zenit), medium (NS Maximus), and high-(NS Virtus) isoflavone genotypes. There were no significant differences in the total isoflavone content (TIF) between F-2 populations, and there was no transgression among genotypes within the populations. Each genotype within all three populations had a higher TIF value than the lower parent (NS-L-146), while genotypes with a higher TIF value than the better parent were found only in the NS-L-146 x NS Zenit cross. However, significant differences in the aglycone ratio (ratio of aglycone to glycone form of isoflavones) were found between the populations. The highest aglycone ratio was found in the NS-L-146 x NS Maximus cross. The results indicate that the genetic improvement for the trait is possible.

AB - Food and feed of plant origin containing phytochemicals of great antioxidant
potential are called nowadays “functional”, which means that they beside nutritive traits,
feature also some medicinal properties. Plant phenolics show useful characteristics in
human and animal metabolism, such as antiinflamatory and even anticarcinogenic. They
posses antibacterial, antimutagenic and vasodilatory activities, as well. Acting as natural
antioxidants they lower the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiac illness. Thus, soybean based
feed enriched with polyphenols may be classified as functional feed in animal diet.
Content of total polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins were evaluated in the
seeds of seven soybean varieties of different seed color. One yellow seed cultivar
represented a reference genotype. Isoflavone (phytoestrogen) content and composition was
determined using HPLC analysis on an Agilent model 1100, equipped with diode array
detector (DAD). Aglycons were quantified from three five-
0.9998) obtained using the corresponding standards (daidzein, glycitein and genistein). In
addition, antioxidant activity of seed extracts was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-
picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay.
A positive linear correlation between antioxidant activity and contents of total polyphenols
and anthocyanins was established. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in the
extracts of black and brown varieties, which also showed high levels of all polyphenol
classes examined. Yellow seed had the highest total isoflavone content (3.62 mg/g of dry
material). The highest concentration of total daidzein was determined in black seeds (>2.0
mg/g d.m.), and the highest total glycitein and genistein contents occurred in the yellow
cultivar (0.53 and 1.49 mg/g d.m., respectively). Varieties of black and brown seeds could
be of special interest due to large content of polyphenols (4.94-6.22 mg/g d.m.), especially
from the class of anthocyanins. Obtained data should enable the selection of genotypes rich
in natural antioxidants that could further be processed into functional feed in animal diet.

AB - Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is the most important legume because it is an essential source of dietary protein and oil for animal feed and food production. Good soil with wellplanned program of fertilization is the main factor of soybean production. Soybean yield will be reduced when essential nutrients are deficient. Sufficient soil fertility combined with a well-planned fertilization program is a main component for high soybean production. The aim of this investigation was to estimate the effects of fertilization and seed inoculation on height of soybean plant in humid year. Two factors were tested: 1. CAN fertilization and 2. seed inoculation. Four treatments of CAN fertilization were tested: Control - 0 kg N ha-1; 50 kg N ha-1; 100 kg N ha-1 and 150 kg N ha-1. Two factors of seed inoculation (SI) were tested: Without SI and with SI. Results showed that fertilizers and seed inoculation significantly increased the values of soybean productivity. Cost effective is the application of 50 kg N ha-1 and it is recommended on the basis of this study.

AB - In total 76 varieties of alfalfa were collected and sown and 41 alfalfa genotypes showed tolerances to lower soil pH. The selected alfalfa genotypes are then sown in a test field on the soil that belongs to the type of brown soil on the gravel or the cambisol with the soil pH from 5.33 to 5.64. After 5 years, 10 genotypes were selected based on the agronomic properties and the experiment was set up on the soil with the pH from 5.0 to 5.1 in H2O. The following genotypes were used for these tests: G-2, G-11, G-19, G-34, G-39, G-44, G-48, G-51, G-53 and G-100. The following properties were observed: plant height (cm), number of stems per plant, stem thickness (mm), number of internodes per stem, leaf/stem ratio (%), yield of biomass in the I cut (g plant(-1)). During these tests, the highest degree of tolerance towards the lower soil pH was shown by the genotype G-44. Good results were achieved with alfalfa genotypes G-11 and G-48 where the percentage of survivors was over 80%. The highest average plant height during the three-year study (36.9 cm) was recorded in the genotype G-100. The high and stable yield of dry mass per plant have genotypes G-44 and G-19 and they are grouped in group I and are desirable for further breeding. Genotype and year have statistically significant and highly significant influence on the tested parameters, while the significance of the interaction of the genotype x year was determined only for the thickness of the stem.

AB - Clary sage (Salvia sclarea L.) is native to Southern Europe and is cultivated worldwide, as ornamental, as well as essential oil bearing plant.Clary sage is well known for its high value essential oil, widely used in perfumery. Besides, the oil possesses high biological activity and because of that is used against stress, tension, depression, insomnia, etc. However, traditionally clary sage oil was used an agent against gingivitis, stomatitis and aphthae. Apart of that, recent studies reported analgesic, anti-inflamatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and cytotoxic effects. Studies on clary sage seed fatty oil show that it is a good source of edible oil rich in omega 3-linoleic acid. Clary sage is also used in alcoholic beverages, as well as in tobacco industry. Novel investigations indicated that clary sage have great potential in agriculture because of phytoremediation, allelopathic and insecticidal properties.

morfoloških i biohemijskih svojstava. Izolati koji su pokazali sliĉnost sa
vrstama Bradyrhizobium sp. and Bacillus sp. bili su predmet molekularne
karakterizacije.
prajmera fD1 i rP3. Preĉišćavanje i sekvencioniranje umnoţenih
fragmenata uraĊeno je u Macrogen, Juţna Koreja. Sekvence su analizirane
pomoću programa FinchTV i izvršeno je višestruko poreĊenje dobijenih
sekvenci sa postojećim sekvencama u NCBI GenBank bazi podataka. Svi
izolati Bradyrhizobium identifikovani su kao B. japonicum. U okviru Bacillus
izolata, identifikovano je devet razliĉitih vrsta (B. megaterium, B. cereus, B.
pumilus, B. subtilis, B. thuringiensis, B. safensis, B. mycoides, Lysinibacillus
fusiformis, and L. sphaericus). Nastavak karakterizacije ovih izolata preko
inokulaciju u kontrolisanim i poljskim uslovima.
AB - Despite the variability within the plant growth promoting properties
(PGP) in different species, most of bacterial strains that exhibit
multiple PGP traits might be useful in formulating new inoculants.
Search for effective strains, prior to PGP characterization, require
isolation and identification of desirable species of plant growthpromoting bacteria (PGPB). The aim of this study was to isolate and
identify PGPB on the basis of molecular characteristics. Bacteria of
Bradyrhizobium genus were obtained from root nodules of different
soybean cultivars. Bacteria belonging to genus Bacillus were
isolated from different soil samples which included the rhizosphere of
plants, agricultural and non-agricultural soils. All samples for PGPB
isolation were collected from various parts of the Vojvodina Province.
Characterization of isolates was performed according to
morphological and biochemical properties. Isolates showing
resemblance with Bradyrhizobium sp. and Bacillus sp. were
subjected to molecular characterization. Following DNA extraction, a
partial 16S rDNA gene sequence from the isolates was amplified by
PCR using universal primers fD1 and rP3. Purification and
sequencing of the amplified fragments were done in the Macrogen,
South Korea. Sequences were analyzed using the program FinchTV
and compared to sequences in NCBI GenBank for identification. All
isolates of Bradyrhizobium were identified as B. japonicum. Within
Bacillus isolates, nine different species (B. megaterium, B. cereus, B.
pumilus, B. subtilis, B. thuringiensis, B. safensis, B. mycoides,
Lysinibacillus fusiformis, and L. sphaericus) were identified. Further
characterization of these isolates through PGP screening will be
necessary to select potentially effective strains for inoculation assays
in greenhouse and field.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of improving the microbiological fertilizer for soybean by co-inoculation with PGPR strains. Experiment was carried out under field conditions, on a chernozem soil, using soybean cultivar Galina and five inoculation treatments: B. japonicum; B. japonicum + A. chroococcum + humic acid; B. japonicum + A. chroococcum; B. japonicum + B. subtilis; B. japonicum + B. megaterium. Bacterial treatments had a positive effect on activity and number of investigated microbial groups in rhizosphere, nitrogen fixation parameters and yield of soybean. Inoculation, on average, increased the number of azotobacters, total microbial number, ammonifiers, N-fixing bacteria, actinomycetes, dehydrogenase activity, as well as the mass and number of nodules, nitrogen content in plants and seeds, number of poods and seeds, dry seed mass, and yield of soybean. Co-inoculation had a better effect on the number of microorganisms, dehydrogenase activity and yield of soybean, while the best effect on nitrogen fixation and yield parameters was achieved by single inoculation.

AB - Soybean time of flowering and maturity are genetically controlled by E genes. Different allelic combinations of these genes determine soybean adaptation to a specific latitude. The paper describes the first attempt to assess adaptation of soybean genotypes developed and realized at Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia [ Novi Sad (NS) varieties and breeding lines] based on E gene variation, as well as to comparatively assess E gene variation in North-American (NA), Chinese, and European genotypes, as most of the studies published so far deal with North-American and Chinese cultivars and breeding material. Allelic variation and distribution of the major maturity genes (E1, E2, E3, and E4) has been determined in 445 genotypes from soybean collections of NA ancestral lines, Chinese germplasm, and European varieties, as well as NS varieties and breeding lines. The study showed that allelic combinations of E1-E4 genes significantly determined the adaptation of varieties to different geographical regions, although they have different impacts on maturity. In general, each collection had one major E genotype haplogroup, comprising over 50% of the lines. The exceptions were European varieties that had two predominant haplogroups and NA ancestral lines distributed almost evenly among several haplogroups. As e1-as/e2/E3/E4 was the most common genotype in NS population, present in the best-performing genotypes in terms of yield, this specific allele combination was proposed as the optimal combination for the environments of Central-Eastern Europe.

AB - Seed decay is one of the most important diseases of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) that has a negative impact on the market grade of soybeans. The disease is mainly caused by Diaporthe longicolla, along with other Diaporthe species. Screening of soybean seeds health status in Vojvodina Province, Serbia, showed cultural and morphological variability among isolates identified as D. longicolla. With the use of DNA sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) region and partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-α), the new species was determined. BLAST analysis showed 100% identity with D. pseudolongicolla (syn. D. novem) that was described in this study and its taxonomic revision is discussed. Pathogenicity trial showed that both species, D. longicolla and D. pseudolongicolla, are highly pathogenic on soybean stem and seed, causing 100% of stem wilting and more than 82% of seed decay.

AB - The aim of this study was to select Vicia genotypes with higher polyphenol contents and increased antioxidant activity, and to compare them with soybean, the most widespread and utilized legume species grown in the region. The examined legumes showed similar contents of total polyphenolics and tannins in between specimen, but differed greatly in their flavonoids and proanthocynidins levels. The content of total polyphenols ranged from 1.6 to 6.09 catechin/g dry seeds, and tannins from 0.26 to 2.98 mg of catechin/g dry seeds. The flavonoids levels in Vicia species were much higher compared with soybean, while the content of proanthocyanidins ranged from 1.5 (in soybean) to 62.3 mg of leucoanthocyanidin/g dry seeds (in vetches). The gallic and trans-cinnamic acids were identified as major monomeric phenolic compounds, and quercetin among flavonoids was found in all specimens. Catechin was detected in faba bean and vetches but not in the soybean. The values of the DPPH-test varied in a range between 21.1 and 89.6% of neutralized radicals, which correlated with the total polyphenolics and tannin contents. The faba bean specimens showed favourable traits - high total polyphenolic, flavonoid and proanthocyanidin contents, low total tannin content, and high DPPH-radical scavenging ability.
