AB - In this study, we report genetic characterization of Orobanche cumana, the causal agent of sunflower wilting in Serbia. The genetic diversity of this parasitic plant in Serbia was not studied before. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers and partial rbcL gene sequences analysis were used to characterize the O. cumana populations at the molecular level. While phylogenetic analyses of RAPD-PCR amplicons were performed using unweighted pair-group Method analyses, rbcL gene sequences were analyzed using neigbor joining method and minimum spanning tree. Molecular analyses of RAPD-PCR analysis revealed high genetic diversity of O. cumana populations which indicated high adaptive potential of this parasitic weed in Serbia. Further analyses of rbcL gene using minimum spanning tree revealed clear differences among diverse sections of Orobanche genus. Although this molecular marker lacked the resolution to display intrapopulation diversity it could be a useful tool for understanding the evolution of this parasitic plant. Our results suggested that O. cumana has great genetic potential which can lead to differentiation of more virulent races which is important for determining crop breeding strategies for their control.

AB - Rapeseed is an important industrial plant in the world. In Vojvodina region of Serbia it is grown on well aerated and deep soils. Most often it is sown with the distance between the rows of 25 cm, and 5-6 cm within the row. The trial with three winter rapeseed genotypes (Banaćanka, Slavica and NS-H-2) was set up at Rimski Šančevi (Vojvodina) during growing seasons of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. Seed was sown with inter row spacing of 25 cm, and spacing within the rows of 5 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm and 16 cm. The following parameters were tested upon harvesting: seed germination, 1000 seed weight, test weight, seed yield, oil content and total protein in seed. No effect of planting density was observed on rapeseed seed quality produced in 2009/10 and 2010/11, which should be kept in mind when determining the quantity of seed required for sowing.

AB - Due to its composition the oilseed rape is widely used in the production of oil, animal feed and biodisel production. Due to a wide range of rapeseed use, the aim of this paper was to determine the influence of genotype, production year and planting density on seed germination, seed moisture content, mass of 1000 seed, hectoliter mass, seed yield per plot, and oil and protein content in the seed. Tests were carried out on four rapeseed genotypes sown at a distance of 5 cm (80 plants/m2), 10 cm (40 plants/m2), 15 cm (27 plants/m2) and 20 cm (20 plants/m2) within the raw during 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 vegetation period. Seed germination, hectoliter mass and seed yield depended on production year, mass of 1000 seeds depended on genotype, plant density and production year, while the oil and protein content depended on genotype and production year.
AB - Uljana repica, zbog svog sirovinskog sastava nalazi veliku primenu u proizvodnji ulja, ishrani domaćih životinja i proizvodnji biodizela.

abstract = "Due to its composition the oilseed rape is widely used in the production of oil, animal feed and biodisel production. Seed germination, hectoliter mass and seed yield depended on production year, mass of 1000 seeds depended on genotype, plant density and production year, while the oil and protein content depended on genotype and production year., Uljana repica, zbog svog sirovinskog sastava nalazi veliku primenu u proizvodnji ulja, ishrani domaćih životinja i proizvodnji biodizela.

AB - Three hybrid combinations obtained by crossing six winter rapeseed cultivars were analyzed for the impact of genes with additive and dominant effects and their interactions with inheritance of plant height and first lateral branch height. The linkage among the expected progeny means was checked using the scaling test method (Mather, 1949), while the estimates of genetic effects and mode of inheritance was made by the Generation Mean Analysis (Mather and Jinks, 1982). The additive dominant model did not prove adequate for plant height in all three crosses, and for first lateral branch height in the second and third cross. The inadequacy of the model showed epistatic gene effects were also of large importance in the inheritance of these traits. Duplicate epistasis for plant height inheritance was found in all three cross combinations and for inheritance of height of the first lateral branch in second and third cross combination. However, it should be emphasized that duplicate epistasis among dominant positive genes occurred on plant height inheritance in C1 and C3, and on inheritance of first lateral branch height in C3. Duplicate epistasis among dominant negative genes occurred in C2 on the mode of inheritance of both traits.

AB - Considering the worldwide importance of sunflower oil, objective of this study was to evaluate gene effects and combining abilities of six sunflower open pollinated varieties. Varieties were crossed according to incomplete diallel method and produced fifteen F1 progenies. Comparing the mean values of F1 progenies to parents mean in most cases superdominance was expressed as a mode of inheritance. Nonetheless, dominance of better parent and partial dominance of better parent were also recorded as a mode of inheritance. GCA/SCA ratio indicated greater importance of non-additive genetic component in oil content expression. The genetic variance analysis showed that dominant component was more important and dominant genes prevailed compared to recessive genes for oil content in sunflower.

AB - The castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cultivation emerges as a promising activity for biodiesel production. There is limited information on genetics of modern castor bean cultivars. To be able to foresee results of selection for a characteristic in a population, it is necessary to determine the values of genetic variance, environmental variance and their interaction within the total phenotypic variance. Castor bean studies have mostly been concentrated on the roles of additive and dominant gene effects in the expression of quantitative characteristics. Two two-line castor bean hybrids have been evaluated for mode of inheritance and gene action in the expression, especially epistatic one, of the number of flowers, number of filled seeds per flower head and 1000-seed mass. Epistatic gene effects have played important roles in the inheritance of the studied characteristics in both hybrids. Highly significant values of epistatic gene effects additive × additive and dominant × dominant have been found for all three characteristics in both crosses. Highly significant epistatic gene effect additive × dominant has been found for the number of filled seeds per flower head in cross L2 × L3.

AB - A small-plot trial has been carried out in the trial years of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 at the Experimental Field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops at Rimski Šančevi. It included eight intercrops of autumn-sown brassicas with autumn-sown annual legumes. Two brassicas, fodder kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. viridis L.) cv. Perast and rapeseed (Brassica napus L. var. napus) cv. Zorica were supporting crops for four legumes, pea (Pisum sativum L.) cv. NS Krmni, common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) cv. NS Tisa, Hungarian vetch (Vicia pannonica Crantz) cv. Panonka and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) cv. NS Viloza, acting as supported crops. All six cultivars were also sown as sole crops. The highest two-year average individual contribution in the total forage dry matter yield among brassicas was in fodder kale (4.5 t ha-1) when intercropped with Hungarian vetch, while the highest individual contribution in the total forage dry matter yield among legumes was in hairy vetch (6.6 t ha-1) when intercropped with rapeseed. The two-year average values of LERFDMY ranged between 1.05 in the intercrop of fodder kale with common vetch and 1.14 in the intercrop of fodder kale with Hungarian vetch. The autumn-sown intercrops of brassicas with legumes have demonstrated a considerable potential for forage production.

AB - White lupine has a long history of cultivation and wild-growing forms have been preserved in Greece until nowadays. Seeds of white lupine are rich in proteins but also contain significant amounts of oil making it an interesting source of edible seeds. The demand for new types/sources of oil is constantly rising following the rising demand for food diversification and quality, thus giving an opportunity for less used crops to enter the market. Soybean is the largest source of vegetable oil in crop production globally but in addition to soybean, other legume species have the potential to be a source of vegetable oil. One of these species is the white lupine. To determine the potential of white lupine as a source of oil it is important to analyze oil content and composition. White lupine genotypes from the collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad were tested in 2010. Oil and protein content were measured and two different genotypes had the highest oil content of 11.27%, and the highest protein content of 37.31%. Fatty acids composition in white lupine seed was marked with the presence of rare fatty acids, such as capric and lauric, and a high content of oleic acid. The obtained results indicate that white lupine can be of use as a source of oil intended for specific porpoises, primarily in the processing industries, as well as cold-pressed oils, which could justify oil extraction through their value.

abstract = "White lupine has a long history of cultivation and wild-growing forms have been preserved in Greece until nowadays. The obtained results indicate that white lupine can be of use as a source of oil intended for specific porpoises, primarily in the processing industries, as well as cold-pressed oils, which could justify oil extraction through their value.",

AB - The production of vegetable oils has been registering a constant increase of production and soybean is the largest source of vegetable oil in crop production globally. In addition to soybean, other legume species have the potential, in addition to the basic product-protein, to be a source of vegetable oil. One of these species is the chickpea. It is necessary to analyze the content and composition of the oil to determine the potential of chickpea as a source of oil. Four different genotypes of chickpea from the collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad were tested in 2010. Oil and protein content were measured and it was found that the highest oil content was in genotype 3 (5.43%), and highest protein content in genotype 4 (24.15%). Fatty acids composition in chickpea seed is very specific, and the presence of rare fatty acids, such as capric and lauric, and high content of saturated fatty acids - palmitic. The obtained preliminary results indicate that chickpea is of potential use as a source of oil intended for specific types of manufacturing industries, primarily in the pharmaceutical and confectionery industries, as well as cold-pressed oils, which could justify oil extraction through their value, as a by-product in the production of proteins.

AB - Purpose of this study was to estimate heritability, in broad and narrow sense, for sunflower plant height and head diameter in order to evaluate success of selection of these traits. Fifteen sunflower populations were evaluated. Heritability values, in broad and narrow sense, were estimated in order to find out the proportion of genetic and additive factors in phenotypic expression of these traits. Study showed that the broad sense heritability for plant height ranged from 6.73% to 72.53%, while in the narrow sense it ranged from 4.76% to 95.44%. The broad and narrow sense heritability, for head diameter, varied from 0.15% to 52.58% and from 26.27% to 94.61%. Differences in heritability estimates are attributable to different genetic background of studied populations.

AB - Resistance to broomrape of different inbred lines, hybrids and hybrid combinations of sunflower was investigated. The trial for this experiment, which was set at 6 locations on territory of Bačka, included set of differential genotypes which, according to literature, posess genes for resistance to races A-E, 152 inbred and 121 restorer lines developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, 72 crosses between these lines and 15 Russian and Ukrainian varieties. Differential genotypes behaved identically in all test sites. Domestic mother lines, restorer lines, newly developed hybrids as well as hybrid combinations showed resistance to present races of broomrape in all test sites in Vojvodina. Determination of resistance genes requires analysis of crossing inbred lines and differential lines. Results of the experiment performed in Romania and Turkey, with part of the experimental material, shows that these genotypes behaved differently in terms of resistance to broomrape in different conditions for experiments. The results require further separation on the basis of resistance to different races of the parasite by introducing new differential line.

AB - Days to flowering, plant height and head diameter are significant parameters which are directly or indirectly correlated with yield, main trait of sunflower. Eight CMS lines, three testers and their twenty four hybrids were examined by line x tester method. Significant differences were found between lines, testers and hybrids. Results showed that lines PD-3 and PD-25 had good combining abilities for the trait of days to flowering (58 days and 65 days, respectively). In the expression of plant height best combiners were PD-2 (107.5 cm) and PD-3 (108.7 cm). For head diameter lines PD-52 (24.5 cm) and MA-57 (23.2 cm) were marked as good combiners. Variance of SCA was greater than variance of GCA for all the traits. CMS lines had the greatest part in the expression of the analyzed traits. Non-additive type of gene effect was reported for all examined traits, which implies that they could be improved through heterosis breeding.

AB - The most important oil and protein plant crops belong to different families. Constant increase in demand for plant oils used as food or for processing industry inspired evaluation of other, insufficiently used plant species for breeding and commercial production. Fifteen plant species were grown during 2010 on a quarantine plot of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. Oil and protein content was determined in the seeds accordingly. The highest oil content was found in castor oil plant (52.28%), and the lowest in chard (4.58%). Protein content was highest in white mustard (39.54%), and lowest in castor (13.12%), while the largest total content of oil and protein was found in oil gourd (82.62%), and the lowest in chard (21.94%). Selected species will be included in further research as a source of oil and protein for various purposes.

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of desiccation date and seed moisture content on sunflower seed protein content. The experimental materials were three new parental sunflower lines of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad, Serbia (L1, L2 and L3). Reglone forte (2 l ha-1) was used for desiccation and it was applied at 7-day intervals from the end of flowering to harvest maturity. The protein content was determined by the classical method of Kjeldahl. The stabilization of the protein content was determined in treatment that was performed 21 days after flowering (DAF) at seed moisture of about 45%. Regression analysis determined the highest and statistically significant effect of seed moisture at the moment of desiccation on seed protein content in the line L1, while the effects in lines L2 and L3 were not significant.

AB - The aim of this study was to evaluate NS sunflower hybrids on the basis of the results of seed yield, seed oil content and oil yield obtained in a network of small-plot trials in Serbia in 2011. The trial included 9 hybrids and 14 locations. Seed yield, seed oil content and oil yield were significantly different in small-plot trials in the investigated regions of Serbia. The highest average seed yield was produced by Sremac (3.67 t ha-1), Velja (3.62 t ha-1), Duško (3.56 t ha-1) and Novosađanin (3.55 t ha-1). On the location Rimski šančevi the seed yield (4.48 t ha-1) was significantly highest. Average oil content for hybrids grown in 14 locations was 47.25%. Hybrids Baća (50.26%), NS-H-111 (48.91%), Bačvanin (48.70%) and Novosađanin (47.83%) showed the highest average seed oil content. The highest average oil yield was produced by Baća (1.71 t ha-1), Novosađanin (1.70), Velja (1.67 t ha-1), Sremac (1.63 t ha-1) and NS-H-111 (1.63 t ha-1). Locations with the highest oil yield were Rimski šančevi (2.03 t ha-1) and Sombor (1.96 t ha-1). In the four-year trials in Vojvodina, the average seed yield of 9 hybrids was 3.35 t ha-1. Seed yield over general mean was reached by three hybrids (Duško, Sremac and Velja). The highest seed yield was reached by hybrid Duško (3.56 t ha-1). AMMI1 biplot showed that most stable and with high seed and oil yield were the hybrids Duško, Sremac and Baća, and for oil content Baća, Bačvanin and NS-H-111.

AMMI1 biplot showed that most stable and with high seed and oil yield were the hybrids Duško, Sremac and Baća, and for oil content Baća, Bačvanin and NS-H-111., Cilj rada bio je da se ocene NS hibridi suncokreta na osnovu rezultata koje su ostvarili za prinos semena, sadržaja ulja u semenu i prinosa ulja u mreži mikro-ogleda u Srbiji tokom 2011. godine.

AB - Helianthus genus comprises 14 annual and 37 perennial species. Perennial species reproduce vegetatively (rhizomes, tubers) so that it is relatively easy to maintain them in ex situ collections in the field. Hybrid plants between perennial species and cultivated sunflower keep the ability of vegetative reproduction in F, generation. Feasibility of maintaining and using F, interspecific hybrids was investigated in the collection of wild sunflower species in Novi Sad. Three to five F, plants per hybrid combination obtained from crosses between cultivated sunflower lines and perennial species H. divericarus, H. decapetalus, H. hirsutus, H. laevigatus, H. strumosus, H. eggerttii, H. resinosus, H. rigidus, H. tuberosus and H. salicifolius were transferred to the collection of wild sunflower species. Interspecific hybrids were obtained using conventional crossing method in the period from 1987 to 2005 and are grown in a quarantine field under the same conditions as wild perennial sunflower species. Hybrid nature and genotype-clone stability was verified by morphological observations, male fertility occurrence monitoring and analysis of meiosis and pollen
viability.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the heritability coefficients in the narrow and broad sense by applying different methods and different progenies for plant height, number of leaves per plant, head diameter and seed yield per plant in the sunflower synthetic NS-S-1 in 2 years of evaluation. The narrow sense heritability was estimated according to Mather and Jinks, Verhalen and Murray, Warmer, and Griffing. The broad sense heritability was determined according to Mahmood and Kramer, Briggs and Knowles, Mather, Burton, Lawrence and Jinks, Weber and Moorthy and Mather and Jinks. Average values of heritability in the broad sense for plant height ranged from 30.06% to 98.87%, while in the narrow sense ranged from 17.35% to 81.86%. The broad sense heritability for number of leaves per plant ranged from 9.08% to 96.10%, while in the narrow sense ranged from 26.15% to 91.93%, Average values of heritability in the broad sense for head diameter and seed yield ranged from 31.39% to 89.99% and 27.42% to 97.88%, while in the narrow sense heritability ranged from 20.69% to 73.90% and 16.18% to 80.64%.

AB - Objective of this study was to determine the divergence and association between seed yield and three morphological characteristics that are very important in sunflower breeding (plant height, head diameter and days to flowering) in order to identify the most valuable trait for seed yield improvement. Forty new hybrid combinations were evaluated. Cluster analysis was used to determine genetic diversity in new hybrid combinations by classifying genotypes based on average values of the studied characteristics. Genotypes were classified into three homogenous groups and six individuals. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to examine association between the studied characteristics, among which days to flowering showed negative correlation while plant height and head diameter showed positive correlation with seed yield, on both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Our study showed that there is genetic variability among new hybrids and bearing in mind that hybrids should be grown in different agro-ecological environments, our attention should be focused on developing inbred lines with lower stem resistant to lodging, larger head diameter and earlier flowering.

AB - Performance of 25 new sunflower hybrids at three locations in Romania were estimated using AMMI model. Seed yield per plot were recorded on plants in middle rows to avoid edge effect. The most productive hybrid was NS-6 (4.31 t/ha), while the least productive was NS-13 (2.80 t/ha). The highest yield was obtained by hybrid NS-24 in location Valul lui Traian with seed yield of 5.03 t/ha, while the lowest seed yield was 1.43 t/ha obtained by hybrid NS-13 in location Dalga. AMMI analysis showed that variations in seed yield were mostly due to additive effects, genotype (32.45%) and environment (41.62%), but interaction effect (25.92%) was also not negligible. The most productive hybrids with high yields and low values of interaction were NS-1, NS-2, NS-4, NS-5, NS-6, NS-9, NS-10, NS-11 and NS-16. .
