AB - Wheat bran is a rich source of dietary fibres, some of essential fatty acids and contains important quantities of starch, protein, vitamins, minerals and phytic acid. It is also well known for its powerful anticarcinogenic and antioxidant properties. Field experiments with a collection of 23 wheat genotypes were conducted during two growing seasons in order to evaluate the effects of genotype (G), growing environment (E) and their interaction (G x E) on the nutrient composition of wheat bran. The samples of the bran portion of wheat grain were obtained as by-products of milling on the MLU 202 laboratory flour mill. Oil content was obtained by exhaustively extracting samples in a soxhlet apparatus using petroleum ether as the extractant. Tocopherols were determined by using extraction with hexane and normal-phase high- performance liquid chromatography with detection in fluorescent region. The mobile phase consisted a mixture of hexane:ethy] acetate (70:30, v/v). The results have shown that all sources of variation significantly affected chemical composition of wheat bran fraction. Total oil contents of wheat bran varied between 3.03-5.37% in the first and between 2.68-4.96% in the second growing season for investigated genotypes. Gas chromatography analyses of wheat bran oil showed major fatty acids to be linoleic, oleic and linolenic acids with wider range of variation expressed in the second growing season. Total tocopherols content in wheat bran extracts ranged from 16.3 to 77.6 mg/kg in the first and from 28.08 to 107.49 mg/kg in the second growing season. Significant differences in oil content and its chemical composition were found among the genotypes, indicating the great genetic potential for improvement. Also, the effect of the environment on all investigated compounds was highly significant, indicating the possibility to produce wheat with high levels of selected health components and antioxidant activities in a specific growing environment.

AB - Winter oilseed rape (WOSR) production is dependent on weather conditions, but is also characterized by low nitrogen (N) use efficiency. The objectives of this study were to: (i) evaluate sources of variability for the seed yield and oil content of four rapeseed cultivars under the influence of three sowing dates (SD trial) and five nitrogen dosages (N trial) during four growing seasons; (ii) understand year-related interactions and the effect of climatic variables in different growth stages; and (iii) assess the presence of interactions cultivar by year (C x Y) and treatment by year (T x Y). Six climatic factors were observed, during germination, overwintering, budding, flowering and ripening. The mixed effect split-plot analysis of variance was used, as well as factorial regression models. The C x Y interaction was the most important for the oil content in both trials. The precipitation at budding stage (75.8%), relative air humidity at overwintering (63.3%) and flowering stage (53.0%) accounted for the highest proportion of T x Y interaction for the seed yield, as well as precipitation at flowering (92.0%) and ripening (85.0%) for the oil content. Water availability was the main determinant of the seed yield and/or oil content accompanied with cooler temperatures during the seed development. The study successfully dissected the effect of year-related climatic variables on the agronomical traits in winter rapeseed. Based on this, appropriate agronomic practices can be applied at specific growing stages to ensure a high seed and oil yield.

AB - The objectives of this study were to investigate: (1) the effects of genotype, environment, and their interactions on the oil content (OC), protein content (PC) and grain yield (GY) of 25 varieties of winter wheat, (2) the correlations among these traits in different environments, and (3) the effects of different climatic variables and their interactions with wheat genotypes for the examined traits. The field experiments were performed on three experimental sites in Serbia in 2009/10 and 2010/11. The most variable traits were GY and PC, while the variations of OC were lower. A significant positive correlation between wheat bran OC and GY was found in one, while highly significant negative correlations between PC and GY were found in three out of six environments. The partial least square regression (PLSR) triplots for protein content, oil content and grain yield enabled us to identify favorable and limiting climatic conditions for each trait and explained 31.9%, 32.6%, and 30.4% of the total variance, respectively. Cvs. Renesansa and Zvezdana were identified as genotypes with high average values for all traits, while cvs. Bankuty 1205 and Banatka were identified as potential sources of high protein content.

AB - The aim of this study was to improve understanding of (1) the effect of genotypic and environmental factors on pre-anthesis development and leaf appearance traits of barley and wheat; (2) the relationship of these factors with grain yield, and (3) the differences between these two crops across different environments/sowing dates. Therefore, trials with six two-row winter barley and six winter wheat cultivars were carried out in two successive growing seasons on four sowing dates. Our study showed that the observed traits varied between species, cultivars and sowing dates. In both growing seasons, biomass at anthesis and grain yield declined almost linearly by delaying the sowing date. There was no clear advantage in grain yield of wheat over barley under conditions of later sowing dates. Generally, barley produced more leaf and had shorter phyllochron than wheat. Both wheat and barley showed a similar relationship between grain yield and different pre-anthesis traits.

AB - One of the prerequisites for further improvement of wheat is the assessment of genetic variability of wild relatives, for t he identification of desirable traits that can be used for the genetic enhancement of elite material. The aim of this study was to analyse the polymorphism of 15 microsatellite loci in the collection comprising of 40 genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), 32 genotypes belonging to other species within Triticum genus, and 3 genotypes from Aegilops genus. The results showed high level of genetic diversity present in the collections of cultivated wheat and its relatives. In the collection of bread wheat genotypes, 119 alleles were detected, while in related species 157 alleles were identified. The average gene diversity of 0.68 and 0.81 were found in cultivated wheat and relatives, respectively. The average PIC value in bread wheat was 0.65, and in related species was 0.79. Different dominant alleles were identified in the collections of bread wheat and related species at 9 out of 15 examined loci. Higher number of alleles in the collection of related species was found at 10 loci, while at three loci ( Xbarc 12, Xgwm284 and Xwmc457) higher number of alleles was found in bread wheat genotypes. The two loci (Xgwm495 and Xgwm3) had the same number of alleles in both groups of genotypes. Analyses of individual genomes indicated that only the A genome had simi lar genetic variability indicators in the both groups of genotypes, while genetic diversities of the B and D genomes in the cultivated wheat were significantly reduced in relation to the other species. All analysed parameters of genetic diversity showed significantly higher level of polymorphism present in the wild relatives than in the cultivated bread wheat, indicating a huge potential of using wild related species as a source of new genetic variability for further improvement of agronomicaly important traits in bread wheat.

AB - The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of genotype, year, nitrogen (N) fertilizer doses, and their interactions on the protein and oil content in 24 cultivars of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). A two-year field trial was set up on the Rimski šanĉevi site, with two N doses (45 and 110 kgha-1N). The oil was extracted from bran obtained by using the MLU 202 laboratory mill. The classic method of Rushkovsky was used to determine the oil content and ICC 105/2 method to determine the protein content. Significant variability was found among the cultivars for both analysed traits. Protein content ranged from 10.9% (NS 40S) to 17.1% (Banatka), with the average of 13.3% and coefficient of variation (CV) of 3.1%. During the two trial years, at the lower N rate oil content varied from 2.6% (Skopljanka) to 5.2% (Dragana), and at the higher N rate from 2.5% (Pobeda) to 5.4% (Simonida). The average oil content was 3.96%, with CV of 9.2%.

AB - Wheat is a significant component in human diet. The health effects of whole kernel utilization have been associated with their unique phytochemical compounds distributed in the endosperm, germ and bran fractions. The wheat brans represent rich source of tocopherols and essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid (18:2n6) and linolenic acid (18:3n3). The aim of this study was to analyse tocopherol and fatty acid contents in bran oil of 17 wheat cultivars in order to identify genotypes with higher nutritional value. The oil was extracted from wheat bran using classical Rushkovsky method. Normal phase high performance liquid chromatography (NP-HPLC) with fluorescence detection was used for identification and quantitation of tocopherols. Trimethylsilyl esters of fatty acids were determined from wheat bran oils by using gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector (GC-FID). Total tocopherol content ranged from 40.86 mg kg-1 (cv. NS rana 5) to 124.85 mg kg-1 (cv. Partizanka), with average content of 22.9 mg kg-1 α- tocopherols, 8 mg kg-1 β-tocopherols and 47 mg kg-1 γ- tocopherols. Cvs. Partizanka and NS 40S were identified as genotypes with significantly higher than average contents of all tocopherols. The content of 18:2n6, oleic and 18:3n3 acids were within the ranges of 55.85-73.05%, 9.09-24.82% and 3.63-7.81% of the total fatty acids, respectively. Our results showed that contents of both tocopherol and essential fatty acids (18:2n6 and 18:3n3) varied significantly in the investigated cultivars, suggesting that it is feasible to breed wheat cultivars with increased levels of beneficial phytochemicals for human health.

AB - BACKGROUNDClimate changes do not only affect wheat yield, but also its quality. Information on this topic gathered so far is somewhat contradictory and insufficient. Climate changes also affect wheat indirectly through their influence on the ecosystem, including insects and fungi that affect wheat technological quality. The aim of this study was to examine trends in structural and technological changes of wheat quality under conditions typical of climate changes. With this in mind, three groups of wheat varieties with the same Glu-score were examined in three production years, characterized by different production conditions. RESULTSA production season characterized by climate change conditions results in lower activity of amylolytic enzymes. What is more, it results in lower content of gluten, higher gluten index value, its decrease after 1h to 37 degrees C, lower number of free SH groups and higher content of free amino groups, which result in lower alveograph W, lower farinograph WA and higher extensograph dough resistance. CONCLUSIONVariability in wheat quality produced under different climatic conditions is mainly influenced by the production conditions, including their influence on ecosystem factors. The influence of wheat cultivar genetic predisposition is much less expressed. This indicates that differences among cultivars with different Glu-score might be diminished under the influence of altered production conditions, as a consequence of climate change.

AB - Assessment of health-beneficial chemicals in wheat grain and oran, such as proteins and oil is
important for the breeding due to increased consume: cernands ior healthier food. Also, it is
very important to know their relationships with the grein yield and to what extent they could
be modified by growing conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate oil and
protein contents, as well as grain yield of 25 winter wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) varieties and
to establish correlations among these traits in different environments. The field studies were
performed on three different experimental sites in Serbia during two growing seasons
(2009/10 and 2010/11). The investigated locations representing Serbia’s most important
 wheat-growing areas: Rimski Sancevi (45°20’N, 19°51'F 37 m altitude), Sremska Mitrovica
(46°06'N, 19°33'E, 83 m altitude) and Pancevo (44°50 N, 20°40°E, 76 m altitude). The oil was
extracted from wheat bran obtained by laboratory mi! MLU 202. Classical Rushkovsky
method was used to determine oil content, while protein content was determined by the ICC
105/2 method. Significant variability was found among the genotypes for all analysed traits. In
the six environments, the oil content varied from 2 “> 5.6%. with the average value of
3.8% and coefficient of variation (CV) 15.7%. The protein content ranged from 11.2% to 17.8%
with the CV of 5.4%, while the grain yield varied fram 2.3 to 9.8 t/ha, with the CV of 17.8%.
The average genotypic values for all environments have shown negative correlation between
protein content and grain yield (r=-0.739**). This correlation was highly significant in three
(E3, E4 and £6) out of six environments, while significant positive correlation between oil
content and grain yield (r=0.441*) was found only in Ee. The established correlations between
the traits are highly environmentally dependant and co. » modified by variable growing
conditions. It will be very valuable for breeding process to identufy climatic variables and
growing conditions that modify unwanted correlations, 2s well as to identify genotypes in
which these correlations are not expressed !n orce iow successful breeding for
improvement of both traits at the same time. For positive correlations it is also useful to know
the favourable conditions in which they can be maximize

AB - One of the most important tasks in a wheat breeding program is the development of high yielding wheat cultivars by crossing the parents with good general combining ability (GCA) and selecting desirable genotypes within its segregating generations for grain yield traits. The objective of this study was to estimate the combining ability and gene action involved in the expression of the traits grain weight per spike and grain weight per plant of wheat in F-1 generations, in 5 x 5 half diallel cross of bread wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum L.). The results of applying combining ability analysis indicated that among the parents, genotypes Sara, Pobeda and Renesansa were found to be the best general combiners for the both investigated traits. The best specific crosses for both traits were Sara/Partizanka, Pobeda/Sara, Renesansa/Partizanka, Partizanka/Pesma and Pobeda/Pesma. Most of the specific crosses involved high x high, high x low and low x low general combiners. The results of regression analysis, as well as the analyses of components of genetic variation indicated over-dominance in the inheritance of examined traits suggested that selection in later segregating generations may lead to fairly good improvement in these characters.

AB - The contents of soluble free phenolics (SP), PVPP-bound tannins (PVPP-P), flavonoids (TF) and proanthocyanidins (PA), as well as the DPPH-radical scavenging capability, of the whole grain of 17 different Triticum spp. accessions were analyzed. The contents of SP ranged from 976 to 2927 mu g CE g(-1), of PVPP-P from 335 to 1412 mu g CE g(-1) and of TF from 0.16 to 1.12 mu g RE g(-1) of dry whole grain. The presence of PA in the whole grains was not established. The values for DPPH-radical scavenging activity were rather moderate, under 40 % of neutralized radicals. A positive correlation between DPPH-activity and analyzed phenolics was recorded in twelve of the seventeen genotypes (r from 0.73 to 0.99). trans-Cinnamic acid was the major compound among acids and quercetin among flavonoids found in the wheat varieties. The data obtained should enable the selection of the accessions rich in biologically active compounds that could further be processed into functional food with possible health benefits associated with higher antioxidant properties.

AB - This study analysed polymorphism of 15 microsatellite loci in the collection comprising of 40 genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), 32 genotypes belonging to other species within Triticum genus and 3 genotypes from Aegilops genus. The results showed significant differences in the variability of the tested loci in bread wheat and related species. In the collection of bread wheat genotypes, 119 alleles were detected with the average number of 7.9 alleles per locus. In wild and cultivated related species 157 alleles were identified, with the average of 10.5 alleles per locus. All analysed parameters of microsatellite loci variability (PIC value, gene diversity, heterozygosity, etc.) indicated higher level of polymorphism in wild relatives than in the cultivated bread wheat. Analyses of individual genomes indicated that in the bread wheat genetic diversity of the B and D genomes was significantly reduced in relation to the A genome, while the differences in polymorphism between genomes in the wild relatives were significantly lower. The results showed that wild related species can be used as sources for new variability in wheat breeding.

The results showed that wild related species can be used as sources for new variability in wheat breeding., U radu je ispitana polimorfnost 15 mikrosatelitskih lokusa u kolekciji koju čine 40 genotipova gajene pšenice (Triticum aestivum L.), 32 genotipa koji pripadaju drugim vrstama roda Triticum i tri genotipa iz roda Aegilops.

AB - Grain yield is one of the most important and complex traits in small grain breeding programs and its continuous improvement represent the main priority during the development of new cultivars. In addition to grain yield, feed manufacturers and farmers request precise definition and improvement of feed barley quality. Two new varieties of winter six-row barley - NS Kosmaj and NS Maestral were registered by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water management of Republic of Serbia in 2015. These varieties are results of a long breeding process at the Institute of Field and Vegetable crops, Novi Sad. The two-year long trials of the Commission for the registration of varieties of the Republic of Serbia have established that the NS Kosmaj and NS Maestral are distinct, uniform and stable varieties, and at all locations and for all years examined, both have produced standard yield levels, but of a significantly higher quality. These new varieties of winter six-row feed barley are characterized by high genetic potential for yield, which is over 12 t ha-1, and a high protein content desirable for animal feed.
AB - Prinos zrna predstavalja jednu od najznačajnijih i najsloženijih osobina u oplemenjivanju strnih žita, pa kontinuirano povećanje prinosa i dalje ostaje glavni prioritet prilikom stvaranja novih sorti. Pored prinosa, zahtevi proizvođača stočne hrane i samih stočara, uslovljavaju jasnije definisanje i unapređenje hranljivih svojstava zrna.

AB - The main objective of this paper was to monitor the development of the root system of wheat cultivars under different levels of water and salt stress. The HAS-RSDS root phenotyping platform is a semi-automatic diagnostic system for continuous monitoring with the rhizocolumn system during the developmental stages. The experiment was conducted with fourteen wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L) from Serbia (5), Austria (4) and Azerbaijan (5) which were chosen based on different levels of salt and drought tolerance shown in field trials. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse under four different watering/salt conditions: 1. well watered (60% field capacity) without salt (NaCl) added (control 1); 2. water limited (20% field capacity) and no salt (NaCl ) added (control 2); 3. well watered (60% field capacity) and saline conditions (0.2% NaCl) and 4. water limited (20% field capacity) and saline conditions (0.2% NaCl).

AB - The objective of this work was to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of wheat genotypes, to detect significant and stable genetic associations, as well as to evaluate the efficiency of statistical models to identify chromosome regions responsible for the expression of spike-related traits. Eight important spike characteristics were measured during five growing seasons in Serbia. A set of 30 microsatellite markers positioned near important agronomic loci was used to evaluate genetic diversity, resulting in a total of 349 alleles. The marker-trait associations were analyzed using the general linear and mixed linear models. The results obtained for number of allelic variants per locus (11.5), average polymorphic information content value (0.68), and average gene diversity (0.722) showed that the exceptional level of polymorphism in the genotypes is the main requirement for association studies. The population structure estimated by model-based clustering distributed the genotypes into six subpopulations according to log probability of data. Significant and stable associations were detected on chromosomes 1B, 2A, 2B, 2D, and 6D, which explained from 4.7 to 40.7% of total phenotypic variations. The general linear model identified a significantly larger number of marker-trait associations (192) than the mixed linear model (76). The mixed linear model identified nine markers associated to six traits.

The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with four growth conditions:
1, Well watered (60% field capacity) in the presence of sufficient N (60 mg N kg-1 soil)
2. Well watered (60% field capacity) in the presence of low N (3-4 mg N kg-1 soil)
3. Water limited (20% field capacity) in the presence of sufficient N (60 mg N kg-1 soil)
4. Water limited (20% field capacity) in the presence of low N (3-4 mg N kg-1 soil).",

AB - Change of meteorological factors throughout years causes different reactions of wheat genotypes in terms of trait expression. Effects of environmental factors (sum of active temperatures, total precipitation and insolation) on heading time and plant height were analysed in twenty-seven wheat genotypes of different geographical origin from 2009-2013. The selected genotypes were classified into three groups according to the heading time (early, medium early and late), and the height (low, medium or high). Canonical correlation analysis was used to determine the interdependence between environmental factors and wheat phenotypic traits. Within all three groups for plant height, Eigen value of the first canonical factor explained 86.9-98% of the variability, indicating one predominant factor in the expression of this trait. Within the groups for earliness, Eigen value of the first canonical factor explained 64.9-76.3% of the variability, indicating more predominant factors in the expression of this trait.

AB - The lipid components and soluble sugars in flour samples of different cultivars of barley (Hordeum vulgare), involving winter malting barley, winter forage barley, spring barley, and hulless barley, were identified). Fatty acids were extracted from flour samples with n-hexane, and derivatized into volatile methyl esters, using TMSH (trimethylsulfonium hydroxide) in methanol. Soluble sugars were extracted from defatted and dried samples of barley flour with 96% ethanol, and further derivatized into the corresponding trimethylsilyl (TMS) oximes, using hydroxylamine hydrochloride solution and BSTFA (N,O-bis-(trimethylsilyl)-trifluoroacetamide). The hexane and alcoholic extracts of barley cultivars were analyzed by GC-MS system. Lipid and sugar compositions were very similar in all barley cultivars. Therefore, multivariate analysis was applied to numerical values of automatically integrated areas of the identified fatty acid methyl esters and TMS oximes of soluble sugars. The application of hierarchical cluster analysis showed a great similarity between the investigated flour samples of barley cultivars, according to their fatty acid content (0.96). Also, significant, but somewhat less similarity was observed regarding the content of soluble sugars (0.70). These preliminary results indicate the possibility of distinguishing flour made of barley, regardless of the variety, from flours made of other cereal species, just by the analysis of the contents of fatty acids and soluble sugars.

AB - Grain yield is one of the most important and complex traits in cereal breeding and depends upon a combination of different plant traits. Therefore, an effective breeding program requires a proper understanding of the relationships between grain yield and agronomic traits. The objectives of this study were the evaluation of two-rowed winter malting barley genotypes and the perceiving of relationships among grain yield and their agronomic and quality traits. The trials with 19 two-rowed winter malting barley genotypes were conducted during three years. The relationships among plant lodging, height, thousand kernel weight, hectolitre mass, grain protein content and grain yield, were studied by PCA biplot analysis. The results showed that the influence of year, genotype and genotype by year interaction on barley grain yield were significant. Further, results indicate that two-rowed winter malting barley grain yield can be improved by selecting plants of average plant height with thousand kernel weight above 41.0 g and grain protein content of about 11.0 g 100-1g dm.

AB - Knowledge about the effect of genotypic variation and sowing date on dry matter accumulation, remobilization and partitioning in winter barley is important for crop management. Therefore, in field studies, six winter barley genotypes of various origin and maturity groups were studied across four sowing dates. In general, grain yield and dry matter content decreased with delayed sowing, after mid-October, and average grain yield in late October and November sowing was lower 14.2% and 16.9%, respectively, compared to the yield in the optimal sowing date. Among the tested genotypes, high grain yield and dry matter content was obtained from late and medium early barley genotypes. Delayed sowing dates, on average, reduced dry matter remobilization and contribution of vegetative dry matter to grain yield. In years characterized by high spring precipitation, late September and early October sowing of medium early and late barley genotypes enable increased accumulation and remobilization of dry matter and obtainment of high grain yield.

AB - In the 2013/14 production year, there was a strong appearance of rust on wheat at several locations in Vojvodina and Serbia. According to symptoms, colors, shapes and sizes of urediospores and teliospores the causal agent of yellow rust Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici dominated. The infection intensities ranged from 40 to 60% on some field sites, and at the genetic collection field trials intensities were up to 90%. This pathogen has not been a major issue in the Serbia wheat production, and there is no study of the virulence of its population. There has been report of the emergence of new races of yellow rust in England, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden and Denmark. This pathogen rapidly spreads through the wind and passengers from all over the world and a new race for a very short period of time can pass from one continent to the other. All that facts are reasons for a serious suspicion that there is the appearance of the new race(s) of yellow rust on wheat in Serbia.
