AB - Oilseed rape is the most significant member of Brassicaceae family in terms of economic value. Its oil is the third largest source of vegetable oil in world (USDA, 2016) after palm and soybean oil. This industrial crop is cultivated for high quality oil used in human nutrition, as well as for biodiesel production. High level of monounsaturated and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids makes rapeseed oil good for heart health. After oil extraction from seed, remains meal which is rich in proteins and is used as feed. At a moment in Europe, there is limited output of vegetable proteins used as feed (Jasinski et al, 2018). Breeding efforts are focused not only on higher yield, but also in improving oil and meal quality of oilseed rape. Main goal of this research was to examine oil and protein content of 39 genotypes (lines, cultivars and one hybrid) from IFVCNS (Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad) collection of oilseed rape. Oil content was determined by magnetic resonance analyzer (Newport 4000 NMR). Determination of total protein amount was performed with standard Kjeldahl (1883) method. Average contents of rapeseed oil and proteins are 40-45% and 18-25%, respectively. In this study, oil content was presented as percentage of seed and varied from 28,70% in NS-H-R3 father line to 48,51% in cultivar Jovana.

AB - Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is the most common source of vegetable oils in Europe. One of the main breeding objectives is to create rapeseed genotypes with highly appreciated nutritional characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate fatty acid and tocopherol constituents (α-, β-, γ-tocopherols) in a collection of 49 NS rapeseed genotypes and to identify genotypes with desired content of fatty acids and tocopherols using multivariate statistical methods: principal component, cluster and two-way cluster analysis. Principal Component Analysis revealed 5 PC components with Eigen value >1, which explained 78.70% of the total variability. The PC analysis identified oil quality traits that contributed most to the variation of analyzed genotypes and can be used for facilitating the selection of desirable characteristics in rapeseed breeding. Both cluster analysis and two-way cluster analysis helped the identification of genotypes with similar fatty acid and tocopherol composition. Two main groups could be identified on the dendrogram, the first having two genotypes and the second comprising 44 genotypes. Three genotypes did not belong to any group. The extent of variation within the breeding material was clearly illustrated and the genotypes from one side, and analyzed oil quality traits from the other side, were effectively classified on the heatmap. The obtained results confirmed that classification and characterization of rapeseed germplasm and the selection of superior genotypes for commercialization or as parents in future hybridization program can be effectively performed by using multivariate analysis.

AB - Linum usitatissimum (Linn.), commonly known as flaxseed or linseed, belongs to the family Linaceae. Flaxseed has high nutritive value and multiple uses. It is considered a functional food that has nutrients with specific properties, such as essential omega-3 fatty acids (a-linolenic acid, 18:3n3), lignan or dietary fibers. Additionally, a-linolenic acid (ALA) is the precursor of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) omega-3 family which forms eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the body. The converting of ALA to EPA and DHA in the body is restricted, but can be physiologically and clinically important. Flaxseed is regarded as the best plant source of the essential omega-3 fatty acid. Studies suggest that the omega-3 fatty acid may have anticancer properties. Hence, present study is carried out to compare content of essential fatty acids in six different flaxseed genotypes. The oily flax type was exclusively included in this assay. In 2017, field experiment was conducted on the location of Rimski Sanéevi (Vojvodina Province, Serbia). Oil content was obtained by extracting samples in a soxhlet apparatus using petroleum ether as the extractant. Trimethylsilyl esters of fatty acids were determined from oil of flaxseed by using capillary gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector. Total oil contents at flaxseed varied among 37.49-45.87% for tested genotypes. Gas chromatography analyses showed major fatty acids to be a-linolenic acid, linoleic and oleic acids. The content of 18:3n3, 18:2n6 and oleic acids were within the ranges of 52.61-58.65%, 13.29-21.71% and 16.41-20.52% of the total fatty acids, respectively. The study confirmed that the essential fatty acids (18:2n6 and 18:3n3) are predominant acids in investigated genotypes of flaxseed. The presence of essential fatty acids in tested flaxseed genotypes makes them nutritionally valuable. The results have shown that there were differences in content of essential fatty acids among the genotypes, indicating the great genetic potential for further improvement.

AB - Due to its composition the oilseed rape is widely used in the production of oil, animal feed and biodisel production. Due to a wide range of rapeseed use, the aim of this paper was to determine the influence of genotype, production year and planting density on seed germination, seed moisture content, mass of 1000 seed, hectoliter mass, seed yield per plot, and oil and protein content in the seed. Tests were carried out on four rapeseed genotypes sown at a distance of 5 cm (80 plants/m2), 10 cm (40 plants/m2), 15 cm (27 plants/m2) and 20 cm (20 plants/m2) within the raw during 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 vegetation period. Seed germination, hectoliter mass and seed yield depended on production year, mass of 1000 seeds depended on genotype, plant density and production year, while the oil and protein content depended on genotype and production year.
AB - Uljana repica, zbog svog sirovinskog sastava nalazi veliku primenu u proizvodnji ulja, ishrani domaćih životinja i proizvodnji biodizela.

AB - White lupine has a long history of cultivation and wild-growing forms have been preserved in Greece until nowadays. Seeds of white lupine are rich in proteins but also contain significant amounts of oil making it an interesting source of edible seeds. The demand for new types/sources of oil is constantly rising following the rising demand for food diversification and quality, thus giving an opportunity for less used crops to enter the market. Soybean is the largest source of vegetable oil in crop production globally but in addition to soybean, other legume species have the potential to be a source of vegetable oil. One of these species is the white lupine. To determine the potential of white lupine as a source of oil it is important to analyze oil content and composition. White lupine genotypes from the collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad were tested in 2010. Oil and protein content were measured and two different genotypes had the highest oil content of 11.27%, and the highest protein content of 37.31%. Fatty acids composition in white lupine seed was marked with the presence of rare fatty acids, such as capric and lauric, and a high content of oleic acid. The obtained results indicate that white lupine can be of use as a source of oil intended for specific porpoises, primarily in the processing industries, as well as cold-pressed oils, which could justify oil extraction through their value.

AB - The most important oil and protein plant crops belong to different families. Constant increase in demand for plant oils used as food or for processing industry inspired evaluation of other, insufficiently used plant species for breeding and commercial production. Fifteen plant species were grown during 2010 on a quarantine plot of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. Oil and protein content was determined in the seeds accordingly. The highest oil content was found in castor oil plant (52.28%), and the lowest in chard (4.58%). Protein content was highest in white mustard (39.54%), and lowest in castor (13.12%), while the largest total content of oil and protein was found in oil gourd (82.62%), and the lowest in chard (21.94%). Selected species will be included in further research as a source of oil and protein for various purposes.

AB - The most important criteria for the introduction of confectionary hybrids into production is high seed yield. A very strong positive correlation was determined between seed yield and seed protein content. A very strong positive correlation was determined between seed oil content, kernel oil content, seed protein content, with kernel. The degree of interdependence between different traits is a sign of direction which is supposed to facilitate better planning of sunflower breeding program.

AB - The trial was conducted at Rimski Šančevi experimental field in 2009 in order to assess the effect of chemical desiccation on oil content in seed of three sunflower inbred lines (L1, L2 and L3). Reglone forte (2 l/ha) was used for desiccation. Desiccant application was performed at 7-day intervals from the end of f lowering to harvest maturity. Seed moisture content was measured prior to each treatment. Seed oil content was determined after harvest. The three lines showed highly significant differences in seed oil content. The highest oil content was found in L3, the lowest in L2. The highest oil content was obtained with the treatment done 21 days after flowering (DAF), when seed moisture was 45.6%. There was no subsequent increase in oil content. Regression analysis showed that the three lines achieved maximum oil content at different seed moisture levels at the time of desiccation (19% to 39%). .

The highest oil content was found in L3, the lowest in L2. The highest oil content was obtained with the treatment done 21 days after flowering (DAF), when seed moisture was 45.6%. There was no subsequent increase in oil content. Regression analysis showed that the three lines achieved maximum oil content at different seed moisture levels at the time of desiccation (19% to 39%). .",

AB - Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is the most important oil crop in Serbia, that produces high quality oil for human consumption and technical purposes as well. Sunflower is attacked by more than 40 different diseases of which only a certain number causes serious problems in the production process. Among these, the most important are phytopathogenic fungi. One of the most damaging diseases is downy mildew which is caused by Plasmopara halstedii fungus (Farl.) Berl.et Toni. (syn. Plasmopara helianthi Novit.). In conditions that favour its development it can reduce the yield of the sunflower by 50%. Many physiological races of this fungi hinder the control of the disease and that's why agrotechnical, chemical and quarantine measures should be applied. As the dominant race in our country is race 730, the testing of the selected material is aimed at creating hybrids of high resistance to this particular race of downy mildew. Other races are also taken into consideration and evaluated. As downy mildew occurred during the vegetation period in 2008, this research was designed to investigate the efficiency of fungicides, applied in case of secondary infection. We have measured oil and protein contents, germination and pathogen presence in seed of treated plants. Crops infested with Plasmopara helianthi and treated with Ridomil, developed healthy seed with unchanged oil and protein contents in comparison with non-treated healthy crop. According to given results, we can confirm that, when secondary infection of downy mildew appears, treatment with fungicides are reliable. Following NS hybrids in Serbian commercial sunflower production that contain Pl-6 gene, conferring resistance to most important races of downy mildew are recommended: Sremac, Duško, Plamen, Kazanova,Velja and Rimi PR.

AB - Wheat germ oil is a highly rich unrefined oil that is one of the richest sources of Vitamin E, A and D. It also has a high content of proteins and Lecithin. It is a good source of fatty acids that are very vital for the healthy growth of the body. The objective of this paper was to determine the variability of grain oil content in twenty phenotypically divergent wheat varieties from different selection cycles. Analysis was conducted on the bran portion of the wheat grain. The bran fraction of wheat incorporates the germ, which is rich in oil. It was obtained using the laboratory mill MLU 202. Oil content was determined using the classical method developed by Ruskovski. Significant differences were found among the genotypes, with the oil content ranging from 2.62% (Skopljanka) to 5.21% (Dragana). Cluster analysis was used to sort the genotypes according to the degree of similarity. The large variability among the genotypes revealed by the study indicates the possibility for a further improvement of the tested trait.

AB - At the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, beside the basic direction in sunflower breeding, the creation of standard hybrids with high oil content with high seed and oil yield, hybrids are being created for special confectionery purposes directed towards the final kernel products. In this program, apart from breeding in order to improve main seed yield components, special attention is given to the increase of protein content and the quality with the decrease of seed oil content, to the increase of the weight of 1000 seeds and to the decrease of content of the shell. Two-line SC hybrid was created by crossing the cytoplasmatic male sterile line of the mother with a father line with fertility restoration genes. Borneo is a high protein confectionary type hybrid that has been registered in Slovakia (EU) in 2009. It contains successfully combined genes responsible for high genetic potential for yield and valuable technical and technological seed traits. The hybrid is adequate for nutrition, dehuling and kernel production. Borneo is a medium early hybrid with the genetic potential for yield of over 4,5t/ha and its seed oil content is under 43%. .

abstract = "At the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, beside the basic direction in sunflower breeding, the creation of standard hybrids with high oil content with high seed and oil yield, hybrids are being created for special confectionery purposes directed towards the final kernel products. AB - The sunflower is one of the four most important oilseed crops in the world, and the nutritional quality of its edible oil ranks among the best vegetable oils in cultivation. Typically up to 90% of the fatty acids in conventional sunflower oil are unsaturated, namely oleic (C 18:1, 16%-19%) and linoleic (C 18:2, 68%-72%) fatty acids. Palmitic (C 16:0, 6%), stearic (C 18:0, 5%), and minor amounts of myristic (C 14:0), myristoleic (C 14:1), palmitoleic (C 16:1), arachidic (C 20:0), behenic (C 22:0), and other fatty acids account for the remaining 10%. Advances in modem genetics, most importantly induced mutations, have altered the fatty acid composition of sunflower oil to a significant extent. Treating sunflower seeds with gamma- and X-rays has produced mutants with 25%-30% palmitic acid. Sunflower seed treatment with X-rays has also resulted in mutants having 30% palmitoleic acid, while treatments with mutagenic sodium azide have produced seeds containing 35% stearic acid. The most important mutations have been obtained by treatment with dimethyl sulfate, which produced genotypes with more than 90% oleic acid. Mutants have also been obtained that have a high linoleic acid content ( gt 80%) by treating seeds with X-rays and ethyl methanesulfonate. Of the vitamin E family of compounds, sunflower oil is known to predominantly contain a-tocopherol ( gt 90%). Spontaneous mutations controlled by recessive genes have been discovered that significantly alter tocopherol forms and levels. The genes in question are tph(1) (50% alpha- and 50% P-tocopherol), tph(2) (0%-5% alpha- and 95%-100% gamma-tocopherol), and tph(1)tph(2) (8%-40% alpha-, 0%-25%beta-, 25%-84% gamma-, and 8%-50% delta-tocopherol). The existence of (mutant) genes for increased levels of individual fatty acids and for different forms and levels of tocopherol enables the development of sunflower hybrids with different oil quality. The greatest progress has been made in developing high-oleic hybrids (>90% oleic acid). There has been considerable work done recently on the development of high-oleic hybrids with altered tocopherol levels, the oil of which will have 10-20 times greater oxidative stability than that of conventional sunflower oil. While sunflower breeders work on developing hybrids with altered oil quality, medical scientists in general and nutritionists in particular will determine the parameters for the use of these novel types of oil that can improve human nutrition and be used in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

AB - The cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of most important oil crops of the world. Although sunflower is primarily grown for extraction of its seed oil there is a limited production of non-oilseed sunflower types which are used in confections industry or as bird feed. The objective of this research was development of hybrids with high and stable oleic acid content and modified tocopherol composition, with high values for the two most important agronomic characters (seed yield and oil yield) and high tolerance to Phomopsis. The incorporation of the gene Ol+tph1 into these genotypes has led to the development of high-oleic hybrids with altered tocopherol profiles. Oil of these hybrids has a much longer shelf-life than standard sunflower oil. The process of incorporating the genes Ol+tph2 and Ol+tph1tph2 into highly productive sunflower genotypes is under way. The most important results of this line of research are the newly developed female lines with the oleic acid content in oil over 90% and the male lines (restorers) with an oleic acid content in the 89-93% range. Using these lines, hybrids will be developed whose oleic acid content in oil will exceed 90%.

AB - Seed oil and protein content was determined in 12 oil plant species represented with 1-4 cultivars or local populations. It was found that some species have very high oil content, like sesame (55.01%) and euphorbia (48.65%). Safflower is a species that showed low oil content in our conditions (12.00%) in comparison to data obtained in other agroecological environments. Spring false flax had high oil (36.57%) and protein content (26.39%) and it could prove to be a good replacement for rapeseed in the conditions of extensive agricultural production. On the basis of the obtained results for seed protein content, the species sesame, flax, okra and lens fall to the same group as soy bean which is the most important protein crop. The collection of oil plant species should be an analyzed in more detail and used as a source of desired genes in the breeding of species that will be used as alternative source of healthy food, biodiesel and raw materials for the industry.

AB - The existence of genes for a high oleic acid content (Ol-genes) has made it possible to develop high-oleic sunflower hybrids (Olivko). There are also sunflower genotypes with high levels oflinoleic, palmitic and stearic acids which makes possible the development of hybrids with different oil quality. Genes have been discovered for different tocopherol content and type based on spontaneous mutations within sunflower populations. The genes tph1 (50% alpha + 50% beta), tph2 (0-5% alpha + 95-100% gamma) and lph1tph2 (8-40% alpha 0-25% beta + 25-84% gamma + 8-10% delta) enable the development of hybrids with different tocopherol contents and types. The incorporation of the gzne Ol+tph1 into these genotypes has led to the development of high-oleic hybrids with altered tocopherol profiles. Oil of these hybrids can be sustained for much longer than standard sunflower oilcan. The process of incorporating the genes Ol+tph2 and Ol+tphjtph2 into highly productive sunflower genotypes is under way., The most important products of this line of research are the newly developed female lines the oil of which has an oleic acid content of over 90% and the male lines (restorers) with an oleic acid content in the 89-93% range. Using these lines, hybrids will be developed whose oil is going to have an oleic acid content of over 90%.
Gen tph1 (50% alfa + 50 % beta), gen tph2 (0-5% alfa + 95-100 % gama) i geni tph1tph2 (8-40% alfa + 0-25% beta + 25-84 % gama + 8-10 % delta) omogućavaju i stvaranje hibrida sa različitim sadržajem i vrstom tokoferola.

Using these lines, hybrids will be developed whose oil is going to have an oleic acid content of over 90%., Postojanje gena za visok sadržaj oleinske kiseline (Ol-geni), omogućilo je stvaranje visoko-oleinskih hibrida (Olivko) suncokreta. Gen tph1 (50% alfa + 50 % beta), gen tph2 (0-5% alfa + 95-100 % gama) i geni tph1tph2 (8-40% alfa + 0-25% beta + 25-84 % gama + 8-10 % delta) omogućavaju i stvaranje hibrida sa različitim sadržajem i vrstom tokoferola.

AB - The cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is one of most important oil crops in the
world. Although sunflower is primarily grown for extraction of oil there is a limited
production of non-oilseed types used for confections or as a bird feed.
The objective of this research was the development of B- and R-lines with stable and high
oleic acid content and modified tocopherol composition, with high GCA and SCA values for
the two most important agronomic characters (seed yield and oil yield) and high tolerance to
Phomopsis.
B-lines [Lg-21 (tph1, Ol), Lg-24 (tph1, tph2) Lg-25 (tph2, Ol)] and R-lines (near-isogenic
lines for three genes, i.e., Tph1, Tph2 and Ol–VK 66) were used as donors of tph1 and tph2
recessive alleles and Ol gene, in a backcross program with lines for high GCA and SCA
values and high tolerance to Phomopsis: B-lines (Ha-74, Ha-98 CMS-III-8) and R-lines
(RHA-583, RHA-576, RHA-SEL, RHA-SNRF). Tocopherol composition was determined by
thin-layer chromatography followed by the Emmerie-Engel reaction and densitometer
quantification. The screening for oleic acid content was performed by gas liquid
chromatography. The program of incorporation of tph1 and tph2 alleles was based on the
backcross method for the recessive traits of sunflower seeds, which includes the selfing of
backcrossed plants and simultaneous individual crossing with the recurrent line.
As a result of this investigation we made a set of new inbred lines with high or normal
content of oleic acid and modified tocopherol composition which may be used for developing
materials with certain levels of oleic and linoleic acids and a desirable content of alpha, beta,
gamma and delta-tocopherol. As a final result, a set of specialty oils might be obtained for
human consumption and industrial purposes.

AB - The sunflower is one of the four most important oil crops in the world. The common sunflower oil predominantly contains linoleic acid, followed by oleic, palmitic and stearic ones as well as some others that are found only in traces. As far as tocopherols are concerned, the predominant type are alpha tocopherols. Using sources for a high oleic acid content (Ol genes) and sources with genes tph1 (50% alpha + 50% beta tocoph.), tph2 (0–5% alpha + 95–100% gamma), and tph1tph2 (8–40% alpha + 0–25% beta + 25–84% gamma + 8–10% delta), the highly Phompsis-tolerant parental lines of the hybrids NS-H-45, NS-H-626, and NS-H-680 were translated into three isogenic forms. These have taken the following forms: a) Ol+tph1; b) 01+tph2; and c) 01+tph1tph2. In other words, three types of high-oleic oil with different tocopherol type and content have been obtained. Besides these isogenic lines, a number of oleic and linoleic B-lines with a different tocopherol composition have been developed as well. Also, we have developed a large number of high-oleic, high-oil restorer lines with different tocopherols. Some of these have a high level of tolerance to Phomopsis. The newly developed B- and Rf-lines can be used to develop new hybrids with different oil quality. Due to a synergy between Ol and tph genes, the oil oxistability of these new hybrids can be up to 20 times higher than in the common sunflower oil.
