AB - Widespread use of pesticides in intensive agriculture indicates the need for permanent monitoring of their residues in soil. For this purpose, a total of 22 evenly distributed sampling points of arable land were chosen in the sampling area in Serbia. Soils were divided into groups according to the previous crop (pepper, vegetables, maize, wheat and soybean). Soil properties and residues of 68 pesticides, of which 22 herbicides, 25 insecticides and 21 fungicides, were analysed in the collected soil samples. The obtained data confirm the heterogeneity of soil samples regarding their organic matter content (1.41–3.39%) and pH value (pH 4.27–8.08). The average number of active ingredients detected per type of previous crop was 1–2 herbicides, 14–16 insecticides, and 3–4 fungicides, while the residues of 3 herbicides, 20 insecticides and 9 fungicides were found in total. Insecticides with mainly organochlorine compounds represented the majority of the detected active ingredients. Although rapid degradability of sulfonylurea herbicides is a well-known fact, the residues of nicosulfuron, ranging from 0.15 to 1.99 μg/kg, were found in three soil samples where maize was grown as a previous crop. Furthermore, triazoles prothioconazole (0.08 ± 0.11 μg/kg), tebuconazole (0.10 ± 0.24 μg/kg) and epoxyconazole (0.13 ± 0.42 μg/kg) were detected in 36%, 18% and 14% soil samples, respectively, while difenoconazole and flusilazole were detected in only one sample. Soil pH value mostly correlated with pesticides. The levels of pesticides detected in agricultural soils should be monitored further, especially in terms of environmental risks posed by their transfer to groundwater and surface waters.

AB - Mercury (Hg) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are components of household dust and are a risk for human health. The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of Hg and PTEs in household dust in individual housing facilities in the town of Šid, Serbia and their correlation to the content of the elements found in the surrounding garden soil. Total of 64 samples of household dust were collected from 16 locations of individual housing facilities on 4 occasions. Samples of surrounding yard and garden soil were simultaneously collected. None of the 64 analysed soil samples exceeded the threshold limit (TL) prescribed by law for non-agricultural soil, which is 0.3 mg kg-1 DM. Content of Hg in household dust was much higher than in the surrounding soil and ranged from 0.005 to 1.566 mg kg-1 DM. The resulting values of PTEs (As, B, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in household dust had a significantly higher range than in the soil. Contents of Hg, B, Cu, and Zn were much higher in household dust than in the soil. According to the results of correlations of the analysed elements in household dust and surrounding soil, and according to the analysed locations, direct effect of Hg and PTEs contents on the content of the same elements in household dust was not confirmed.

AB - The intensive use of atrazine herbicides in the Republic of Serbia during recent decades has led to the accumulation of residues of atrazine and its metabolites in the environment, which endangers groundwater. With the objective to check the presence of atrazine and its metabolites deethylatrazine (DEA) and deisopropylatrazine (DIA) in the groundwater, the monitoring programme was carried out over the period from 2007 to 2009 in the localities where the atrazine-based herbicides were intensively applied for a number of years. Samples were taken from 327 localities, in total there were 1408 samples of groundwater of the first welling-up collected. The atrazine and its metabolites were extracted with methanol by means of ENVI-C18 (47mm) disc, and the residue level of the studied compounds was analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In the most of groundwater samples collected from agricultural regions, the average value of all tested analytes was above 0.1 µg/dm3. The highest values of atrazine and its metabolites were in the localities that are known for intensive maize production and in the areas of this region under orchards and vineyards, where atrazine was used in large quantities. The average content values of this active substance in the analyzed samples are the result of intensive and long-term usage of this group of herbicides, as well as the high level of groundwater in this region.

The atrazine and its metabolites were extracted with methanol by means of ENVI-C18 (47mm) disc, and the residue level of the studied compounds was analyzed with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). In the most of groundwater samples collected from agricultural regions, the average value of all tested analytes was above 0.1 μg/dm3. The highest values of atrazine and its metabolites were in the localities that are known for intensive maize production and in the areas of this region under orchards and vineyards, where atrazine was used in large quantities. The average content values of this active substance in the analyzed samples are the result of intensive and long-term usage of this group of herbicides, as well as the high level of groundwater in this
region.

AB - Soil and water of adequate quality are essential for food safety, However, the intensive use of pesticides,
especially triazine based herbicides, in recent decades, has led to an accumulation of their residues in the environment.
This essay presents the results of monitoring and analysis of atrazine residues in samples of ground water aquifer and
soil collected in the vicinity of wells, in areas under intensive agricultural production in the region of Srem, where
atrazine has been applied for many years. Residue levels of atrazine were analyzed by GC/NPD, and the results showed
that its average value in samples of groundwater was 0.123 mg/l, and 0.038 mg/kg in soil. These values indicate that
groundwater and soil from this region generally fulfill the requirements of agricultural production.

AB - The quality of water and soil in agricultural production are very important. The intensive use of the herbicide atrazine in Serbia during the last decades, has led to the accumulation of residues of atrazine and its metabolites in the environment. This study was conducted in order to verify the presence of atrazine and its metabolites residues in groundwater and the presence of atrazine residues in soil in the region of northern Serbia, where due to intensive agricultural production, atrazine has been applied in large quantities (2-20 kg/ha) for many years. Groundwater aquifer and soil samples from the arable layer (0-30 cm) were collected from 15 sites in the region of northern Serbia in the vicinity of wells that were used as source for water samples. The extraction of atrazine and _ its metabolites, deethylatrazine (DEA) and deisopropylatrazine (DIA) from water was carried out with methanol using C-18 DSK 47mm (Supelco No.57171), while the extraction from soil samples was conducted with Soxhlet - methylene chloride. Residue levels were analyzed by GC/NPD. The average concentration values for atrazine, DEA and DIA in groundwater samples wer 0.123yug/ (0.001-0.43yg/), 0.06yg/ (0.001-0.5yg/l) and 0.27pg/ (0.01-2.02yg/l) respectively. In 47% of the analyzed groundwater samples the concentration of atrazine and/or its metabolites was above O.1pg/. The average value of atrazine concentration in soil samples was 0.038mg/kq (0.001-0.155mg/kg). According to theRegulations of the Republic of Serbia the maximum level of atrazine in soil is declared respectively for sensitive crops and range from 0.06 to 1.0mg/kg. The result is a consequence of intensive and long-term usage of this group of herbicides, as well as the high level of groundwater in this region. The use of atrazine was recently banned in Serbia and we can expect a gradual reduction of its residues in this region.

AB - Western Serbia is a region well-known for potato production. Concentrations of selected metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and radioactivity were measured in the soil in order to evaluate the quality and characteristics. The examined soils (Luvisol and Pseudogley) showed unsuitable agrochemical characteristics (acid reaction, low content of organic matter and potassium). Some samples contained Ni, Mn and Cr above the maximal permissible concentration (MPC). The average concentration of total PAHs was 1.92 mg/kg, which is larger than the maximal permissible concentration in Serbia but below the threshold values in the European Union for food production. The average radioactivity of U-238, Ra-226, Th-232, K-40 and the fission product Cs-137 were 60.4 +/- 26.2, 33.2 +/- 13.4, 49.1 +/- 18.5, 379 +/- 108 and 36.4 +/- 23.3 Bq/kg. Enhanced radioactivity in the soils was found. The total absorbed dose rate in air above the soil at 1 m height calculated for western Serbia was 73.4 nGy/h and the annual effective dose was 90 mu Sv, which are similar to earlier reports for the study region.

AB - Tolerance of wheat genotypes to the sulfonylurea herbicide metsulfuron-methyl was studied using in vitro culture. Six randomly selected wheat genotypes were used for isolation. Mature embryos were inoculated onto a modified MS medium to which three concentrations of metsulfuron-methyl were added: I-30 g l-1, II-60 g l-1, and III-90 g l-1. The control group of embryos was cultivated on a herbicide-free medium. After one month of cultivation, callus fresh weight was measured. There were significant differences among the genotypes regarding their tolerance to metsulfuron-methyl. The Pobeda cultivar expressed the highest and the Lr-12 genotype had the lowest level of herbicide tolerance.

AB - The residues of pesticides in fruit are the consequence of their direct application in the agricultural production. In order to comprehend in what condition
the pesticide residues in fruit are and how hazardous they are to human health, it is
essential to carry out a long-lasting monitoring of their residue content and to create a
data base and a base of contaminant contents.
The fruit consumption nowadays is increasing in the world, almost 170
kg/person/year. Since the pesticides are widely used for fruit protection at present,
their excessive use can jeopardize human health so the content of their residues must
be checked on.
Our study comprised the determination of pesticide residue content in 108
samples of apples from the market of the Republic of Serbia taken during 2004-2007
(27 samples were analyzed in 2004, 55 samples in 2005, 30 samples in 2006 and 13
samples in 2007). The pesticide residues were determined by gas chromatography with
NPD, ECD and GLC - MS. The samples were tested for the content of 75 pesticides with
LOD of 0.001 to 0.005 mg/kg which were lower than MRLs according to the EU
standards. The relative standard deviation was lower than 19% for all the tested
compounds. In the apple samples taken during 2004, the percentage of the samples
positive to the pesticide residue content was 51.85% and the most frequent
contaminants were £ HCH (50% of positive samples) and endosulfan (28.57%) whereas
the content of all the other pesticide residues was below the EU MRLs. In the analyzed
samples, taken during 2005, out of 70.91% samples in which the pesticide residues
were detected, endosulfan was present in 41.03%, captan in 35.9%, chlorpyrifos in
20.51% and parathion in 17.95% (with 71.43% residue over the EU MRLs) samples.
The content of the procymidone residue was detected in two samples as well as
the content of lambda-cyhalothrin found in one sample was over the EU MRLs. During
2006 thirteen samples of apples were analyzed in which no pesticide residues were
detected. Out of 13 samples analyzed in 2007, five contained the pesticide residues
below the EU MRLs with the most frequently detected dithiocarbamate (3 samples).
The high percentage of samples positive to the pesticide residue content is a
warning that in the production conditions a continuous and multi-level monitoring of
food safety needs to be a regular practice aiming at the successful prevention of
harmful effects of pesticides on the health of people and animals.

AB - In our experiment we have examined the production of baby beetroot under different growing method from the traditional one, with shorter maturity period and with different genotype, on alluvial meadow soil. In this growing phase tender leaves can be consumed so examining the mineral element content of lamina and petiole was considered important. On the whole, it can be concluded that the suitability for growing of the examined 6 varieties for baby beetroot was proved in the case of variety Rubin because both in terms of the usable ratio of beetroot bodies and inside qualities it was considered the best of all. With its fine leafage and intensive body strengthening, this variety seemed most suitable for this growing purpose. The examintions of mineral element content have verified the value of leaves of this plant type that is the nutriophysiological advantages of its consuming.

AB - Soil copper content of several vineyards in the province of Vojvodina was studied in this paper. The sample comprised soil from vineyards owned by individual private growers (16 relatively small plots in total) as well as soil from a vineyard located at a trial farm of Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Novi Sad (9 plots and three checks) in Sremski Karlovci. The study results suggest there are increased copper levels and a tendency towards soil contamination by copper in the vineyards studied, calling for reduced use of copper-based fungicides. Of the 16 plots owned by individual private growers, nine had increased copper levels along with high to toxic levels of readily available potassium and phosphorus. The highest copper content recorded in this part of the study was 214.20 mg/kg, which is twice as high as the maximum value allowed. At the trial farm in Sremski Karlovci, the copper content of the vineyard soil was higher than that of the controls and decreased steadily with increasing soil depth, which is indicative of its anthropogenic origin. Of the 78 samples studied, only three had a copper content that exceeded the maximum allowed concentration (MAC) of 100 mg/kg. However, almost all of the samples from the 0-15 cm surface layer had copper levels exceeding the critical value of 60 mg/kg, suggesting that this soil is possibly in danger and requires reduced use of copper-based fungicides in combination with soil monitoring.

AB - The soil is an ecosystem and the habitat of numerous diverse microorganisms, whose enzymes play the central role in soil metabolic activity. Dominance of certain microbial groups slows down the processes of synthesis and degradation and determines the quality of a soil for safe food production. The aim of this research was to determine the abundance of certain microbial groups and dehydrogenase activity in soils located near busy roads and industrial areas in the city of Novi Sad in the context of their utilization for the production of safe food. Soil microbial and basic chemical properties were determined in nine locations used for different types of agricultural production. The study found positive or negative correlations between microbial abundance and microbial activity on the one hand and chemical soil properties on the other. The abundance of the microbial groups studied was found to be high in the soils but was not correlated with dehydrogenase activity, as low levels of oxido-reduction activity were determined to be present by agricultural soils standards.
Dominantnost pojedinih grupa mikroorganizama usmerava procese sinteze, razgradnje i određuje kvalitet/zdravlje zemljišta.

AB - The objective of this study was to check the fertility of soils in the region of Srem through the analysis of the main chemical soil properties. Locations for soil sampling have been determined by means of a 4x4 km grid superimposed over a soil map of the Vojvodina Province R 1:50,000. GPS coordinates were given for each sample site. The results of this study provide a solid basis for soil quality and environment status estimations. Compared against the previous round of studies (Hadžić et al., 1993), there occurred a moderate soil alkalization, except in forests typically established on the brown forest soil and pseudogley. Humus reduction was registered in most soil types except the alluvial and alluvial-diluvial soils and in forested areas. Total nitrogen varied in unison with humus content. Considering the mean values of available phosphorus and potassium for the entire region of Srem, decreasing trends were seen as compared with the previous round of studies.
AB - U cilju kontrole plodnosti i sagledavanja sadržaja opasnih i štetnih materija u zemljištima Srema i eventualno njihove degradacije u širem smislu, u toku septembra i oktobra 2006. prikupljeno je 250 uzoraka zemljišta.

AB - Magnesium content was analyzed in five of the most grown sunflower hybrids in Serbia, as well as in different populations of wild sunflower species: Helianthus agrophyllus (5), Helianthus annuus (4), Helianthus neglectus (3), Helianthus petiolaris (5), Helianthus tuberosus (5). Magnesium content in the populations of wild sunflower species ranged from 317 to 824 mg/100 g DW. The highest magnesium content was found in Helianthus petiolaris and the lowest in Helianthus tuberosus. Different populations within each species differed significantly in magnesium content. The highest variation coefficient was found in Helianthus tuberosus and the lowest in Helianthus petiolaris. Magnesium concentration in hybrids was significantly different as well, and in two years it was in average between 575 and 813 mg/g DW. The results suggest that genetic variability between magnesium concentrations in wild species and hybrids of sunflower is very high.

abstract = "Magnesium content was analyzed in five of the most grown sunflower hybrids in Serbia, as well as in different populations of wild sunflower species: Helianthus agrophyllus (5), Helianthus annuus (4), Helianthus neglectus (3), Helianthus petiolaris (5), Helianthus tuberosus (5). This should be taken into consideration when requirements for mineral nutrition are analyzed, as well as when wild species are included in breeding programs., U cilju proučavanja genetske specifičnosti ishrane suncokreta magnezijumom ispitan je sadržaj magnezijuma u pet najrasprostranjenijih hibrida suncokreta u Srbiji i u različitim populacijama divljih vrsta suncokreta poreklom iz Severne Amerike: Heliahnthus neglectus (3), Helianthus petiolaris (5), Helianthus agrophylus (5) Helinathus tuberosum (5) i Helinathus annuus (5). AB - Sunflower seed aging during storage affects seed vigor and content of fatty acids. In order to reveal severity of their influence, the following vigor tests were applied: standard laboratory germination test, cold test and Hiltner test. Five sunflower lines submitted to natural aging process for six and 12 months were tested under conventional storage and controlled conditions. The obtained results revealed that seed aging damaged the seed, which adversely affected seed vigor; most reliable results were obtained by the cold test and content of linoleic acids.

AB - Two nearly isogenic lines of sunflower, resistant and susceptible to downy mildew, due to the presence/absence of the Pl6 gene, were used in this study. Inoculation with the suspension of Plasmopara halstedii zoospores, was done on the plants in the phase of first pair of leaves. In the samples taken from 2nd to 96th h after inoculation, content of phenolic compounds in methanolic extracts from frozen leaves were analyzed (UV-VIS and HPLC analysis). A constitutive level of phenolic compounds, as well as, their accumulation after the inoculation were higher in the susceptible than in the resistant isogenic line. Chlorogenic, ferulic acid and esculin had the highest contribution to the phenolic compound accumulation 24 h after the inoculation in the susceptible line, while only the chlorogenic acid and eculin accumulated in the resistant line. Also, there was a trend of scopoletin accumulation in the resistant line.

AB - Chernozem is a soil with ideal physical and chemical properties for crop production. When it comes to potato production, however, it has several drawbacks. One of the characteristics of chernozem is that it is a climatogenic soil, i.e. a soil of the semiarid climate. Such a climate is not optimal for potato growing, which requires a lot of precipitation. i.e. a humid climate. Also, the relief, being the third most important pedogenetic factor behind climate and the climate-dependent vegetation, makes chernozem a soil of flat terrains situated at low altitudes and thus precludes its use in the production of virus-free seed potatoes. Potato produces high and stable yields when grown on soils with good natural fertility under favorable climatic conditions. Weather conditions in the area of KO Maglić are those of a continental climate with a mean annual air temperature of 11.0 °C and a mean annual air temperature during the growing season of 17.6 °C. Relative humidity is 77.0%, total annual hours of daylight 2,034, and the winds most commonly blow from the northwest and the southeast (košava). The precipitation pattern is typically central European, with the most precipitation occurring in early summer (84.9 mm in June) and the least either in early spring (38.7 mm, March) or mid-fall (39.4 mm, October). Still, even on the best of soils developed under natural conditions, there is always some limiting factor that will cause yield losses relative to the genetic potentials of a given crop species. The present paper offers a brief overview of the soil properties at the KO Maglić site, where potato has been grown successfully for decades.
Ispitivano zemljište ima optimalnu količinu humusa i ukupnog azota u većini uzoraka i treba ih održavati redovnim đubrenjem organskim đubrivima i zaoravanjem žetvenih ostataka.

abstract = "Chernozem is a soil with ideal physical and chemical properties for crop production.
