AB - Capsicum annuum is valuable source of many bioactive compounds with the protective role in plants against biotic and abiotic stress as well as beneficial effect on humans’ health. This vegetable is susceptible to many infections, including postharvest decay caused by fungus Alternaria alternata. In order to better understanding pepper fruits defense system, the concentration of phenols and ascorbic acid, scavenging activity and antioxidant enzyme activity in three kapia type sweet pepper fruits (Amfora, Una and Kurtovka kapia) infected with fungus A. alternata were determined in this study. Amfora fruits had the highest tolerance to Alternaria infection. Amfora and Una increase total phenol and vitamin C content after wounding and inoculation, while Kurtovska kapia decreased amount of vitamin C. Depending on reaction mechanism, antioxidant tests showed no changes or decrease in antioxidant capacity in treated fruits. Except for phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity in Amfora and Kurtovska kapia and ascorbate peroxidase activity in wounded Kurtovska kapia fruits, all measured enzyme activity showed no changes or decrease by wounding and/or Alternaria infection. According to results of intensity of lipid peroxidation as biological marker of oxidative stress, it can be concluded that wounding and infection disturb redox balance in all examined genotypes. The tested genotypes showed certain difference in antioxidant defence against wounding and pathogen stress.

AB - With changing environmental conditions food production is becoming increasingly challenging. The production of cultivars resistant to various abiotic and/or biotic stresses may be one of the solutions. In this study, we analyzed the response of the antioxidant system in two different bell pepper genotypes, 26 susceptible and 19 tolerant, to Xanthomonas euvesicatoria when grown in the open field, greenhouse, free and isolated. The activity of four antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, catalase, and total peroxidase was highest in susceptible genotype 26 grown in isolation in the greenhouse. Both genotypes activate ascorbate peroxidase when grown in the field, suggesting that this enzyme is first in the line of defense under these growing conditions. In addition, susceptible genotype 26 had the highest concentration of ascorbic acid as a non-enzymatic defense when grown in the field. However, the carotenoid content of 26 was the lowest in the field, and the ratio of carotenoids to total chlorophyll was lowest in the field for both genotypes. In general, the susceptible genotype 26 activated the antioxidant and other defense systems more frequently than the tolerant genotype 19. Genotype 19 responded to different growth conditions with additional physiological adaptation through chlorophyll and carotenoid concentration correlated with growth location. This suggests that crossbreeding experiments to obtain genotype 19 allow the acquisition of tolerance to some abiotic stressors in addition to tolerance to the biotic stressor.

AB - Pepper is one of the most important vegetable species in Serbia. The use of pepper fruits is very often determined by their type. Tomato-shaped pepper is a fruit type suitable for the pickle processing industry because of its thick pericarp. In this study, several lines of light-yellow tomato-shaped peppers were evaluated in the open field with the aim to develop new variety with appropriate fruit characteristics and without anthocyanin colouration. Eight of selected lines originated from two crosses while two lines originated from variety Novosađanka. Fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit index, pericarp thickness, number of locules, and Brix were measured in technological maturity. According to the obtained data, lines 17 and 24 will be used for further selection process. Line 17 was chosen because of the highest pericarp thickness and high fruit weight and line 24 because of the high content of total soluble solids.
Linija 17 zbog najveće debljine perikarpa i mase ploda, a linija 24 zbog većeg sadržaja suve materije.

AB - In Serbia, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) production largely relies on improved commercial cultivars; however, many farmers still grow and maintain landraces. Productivity assessment of common bean landraces from Serbia may enrich knowledge of bean diversity from Western Balkans, Europe and worldwide. The study aims were to describe the underlying structure of a selected set of landraces and commercial cultivars of common bean, identify relatedness of accessions, and determine breeding values. Substantial variation in productivity was observed for bean landraces, with differences among gene pools and seed forms, revealing their agronomic value. Acknowledged structure of agronomic traits and recognised stratification will assist in multilevel organisation of common bean breeding programs.

AB - In Balkan cuisines, as well as in Serbia, pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) has a very diverse use. Knowledge about consumer preferences is of great importance for a breeding process as well as in market-orientated production. According to the authors’ knowledge, there is little data in the literature about consumer preferences in terms of pepper fruit shape, colour and hotness, especially in the region of southeast Europe and Serbia. An online survey to collect data regarding consumer preferences was conducted via Google forms. Four hundred and two participants (52% females and 48% males), answered the survey questions. In the questionnaire, participants were asked about basic personal data: gender, education level, and age.

povrtarskih vrsta.

AB - Seed as a highly-valuable resource is preserved in collections for many years. Although the seed is kept under optimal conditions, monitoring of germination and the presence of fungi during seed preservation is of great importance. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to examine the seed health status and germination of forty-three onion accessions kept in the timespan of 15 years in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops collection. Germination of seed samples varied from 7-93%. The presence of fungi in the collection was determined on thirty-three tested samples. Fungi from the genera Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Epicoccum, Fusarium and Penicillium were developed. The following Fusarium species identified on the seeds were F. proliferatum, F. graminearum, F. sporotrichoides, F. solani, F. pseudograminearum and F. equiseti. Based on factor analysis, Fusarium and Penicillium were the species which affected germination, while the occurrence of Alternaria species on onion seed is connected to the year of harvest.

AB - Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most commonly consumed legume crops worldwide, cultivated in more than 55 countries (FAO 2017). However, in Serbia it is a novel crop grown on approximately 120 acres, but the area under this crop slightly increases each year. Fusarium wilt caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. ciceris is one of the most economically important diseases in most chickpea-growing areas, but there has been no formal report of the Fusarium wilt of chickpea in Serbia. In June 2018, the first symptoms of Fusarium wilt were registered at Rimski Sancevi (Vojvodina Province), Serbia (N 45'19.3119, E 19'49.9339), as wilted chickpea plants grouped in patches on approximately 5% of plants in a 3-acre area. Symptoms of yellowing and necrosis of foliage appeared as late wilt in the podding stage. Roots of affected plants showed no external discoloration, but a cross-section showed dark-brown discoloration of xylem tissue. To isolate the causal agent, symptomatic plants were collected and 10 cuttings of root symptomatic tissue were surface disinfected with 2% sodium hypochlorite solution for 5 min, rinsed three times in sterile distilled water, air dried on sterilized filter paper, and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and water agar (WA) amended with streptomycin sulfate. After 7 days incubation at 25C in the dark, isolates were preliminarily identified according to their morphological characters described by Leslie and Summerell (2006).

AB - Widespread use of pesticides in intensive agriculture indicates the need for permanent monitoring of their residues in soil. For this purpose, a total of 22 evenly distributed sampling points of arable land were chosen in the sampling area in Serbia. Soils were divided into groups according to the previous crop (pepper, vegetables, maize, wheat and soybean). Soil properties and residues of 68 pesticides, of which 22 herbicides, 25 insecticides and 21 fungicides, were analysed in the collected soil samples. The obtained data confirm the heterogeneity of soil samples regarding their organic matter content (1.41–3.39%) and pH value (pH 4.27–8.08). The average number of active ingredients detected per type of previous crop was 1–2 herbicides, 14–16 insecticides, and 3–4 fungicides, while the residues of 3 herbicides, 20 insecticides and 9 fungicides were found in total. Insecticides with mainly organochlorine compounds represented the majority of the detected active ingredients. Although rapid degradability of sulfonylurea herbicides is a well-known fact, the residues of nicosulfuron, ranging from 0.15 to 1.99 μg/kg, were found in three soil samples where maize was grown as a previous crop. Furthermore, triazoles prothioconazole (0.08 ± 0.11 μg/kg), tebuconazole (0.10 ± 0.24 μg/kg) and epoxyconazole (0.13 ± 0.42 μg/kg) were detected in 36%, 18% and 14% soil samples, respectively, while difenoconazole and flusilazole were detected in only one sample. Soil pH value mostly correlated with pesticides. The levels of pesticides detected in agricultural soils should be monitored further, especially in terms of environmental risks posed by their transfer to groundwater and surface waters.

The levels of pesticides detected in agricultural soils should be monitored further, especially in terms of environmental risks posed by their transfer to groundwater and surface waters.",

AB - Monitoring the health status of narrow-leaved ash tree seedlings (forest office Morović, locality Vinična) in the early spring of 2015, after the catastrophic floods in May 2014, revealed presence of large dark necrotic areas on 1–2 year old sprouts. The isolation of the fungal pathogen was done by standard phytopathological protocols. Three representative isolates (K41, K42 and K78) were preliminary detected and purified by a single-spore technique for further morphological, molecular analyses and pathogenicity testing. Morphological characteristics classified the isolates as Fusarium tricinctum. Tested isolates on narrow leaved ash sprouts caused reddish brown elongated necrotic lesions averaged 20.1 mm. Two marker genes, translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS1), were used in this study. Using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) searching engine, nucleotide sequences were compared to all related sequences. Alignement score resulted in 98.9% identities with F. tricinctum for isolate K78, while isolates K41 and K42 showed 94.1% and 94.3% identities with F. tricinctum complex respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of F. tricinctum pathogen infection on flood stressed narrow-leaved ash trees in Serbia.

AB - Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.) is a perennial polymorphous plant species with essential oil mainly accumulated in the flowers and leaves. It is grown in Serbia for the needs of pharmaceutical companies and tea production, because of its quality and chemical composition. During a routine quality control of hyssop seeds collected from Rumenka (Vojvodina Province), in 2018, fungal infection followed by seed rot was noticed on an average of 22%. Infected seeds were covered with white mycelium followed with violet pigmentation occurring under the seeds. The presence of Fusarium spp. was confirmed with microscopic observation. Isolation was done aseptically by arranging infected seeds onto surface of potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 25 °C with a 12-h photoperiod (Mathur and Kongsdall, 2003). After seven days, 12 Fusarium spp. isolates were designated as JBL 4003/1 - 4003/12. Pathogenicity test was performed in vitro using a modified agar slant method in the test tube with PDA amended. After 10 days, fungal mycelia of tested isolates caused seed rot and seedling decay, like naturally infected hyssop seeds. All isolates were re-isolated and sub-cultured on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) and Carnation Leaf Agar (CLA) using a hyphal tip transfer technique, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Isolate JBL 4003/1 was distinguished based on pathogenicity and cultural characteristics. It caused seed rot after four days, on PDA colony was fast growing reaching 6-8 cm in diam. in five days, forming abundant, whitish to peach aerial mycelium followed with beige to light brown pigmentation in agar.

AB - Late blight (LB) caused by the Phytophthora infestans is a
devastating tomato disease, distributed worldwide. Tomato wild species could
be a potential source of resistance, however, there are little data about their
biochemical response to LB infection. Therefore the aim of the study was to
evaluate total phenolic and total flavonoid content and antioxidative activity in
the leaves of wild (Solanum pimpinellifolium) and cultivated genotype (Bizon)
depending on disease severity. S. pimpinellifolium compared to Bizon was
less susceptible and had five times lower disease severity index (11% and
55% respectively). Additionally, during the disease progression wild
genotype showed a much slower decrease of total biochemical parameters
compared to the cultivated one. Parameters such as total phenolic content
(TP), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging test and ABTS
(2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) radical scavenging
activity in the symptomless leaves and the leaves infection 10-25% remained
the same in S. pimpinellifolium. The susceptible genotype Bizon had about
40% of leaves with the disease severity 25-50%, and a rapid decrease of all
biochemical parameters. A strong negative correlation was observed between
late blight infection and biochemical parameters in Bizon, while in S.
pimpinellifolium late blight infection negatively correlated only with TP, TF
(total flavonoid content) and total antioxidant activity (TAA).

AB - Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most commonly consumed legume crops worldwide However, in Serbia, it is a novel crop grown on approximately 120 acres. Fusarium wilt caused by F. oxysporum f. sp. ciceris is one of the most economically important disease in the most chickpea-growing areas, but yet there has been no formal report of the Fusarium wilt of chickpea in Serbia. In June 2018, the first symptoms of Fusarium wilt were registered as wilted chickpea plants grouped in patches on approximately 5% plants in the area of 3 acres. Symptoms as yellowing and necrosis of foliage appeared as late wilt in the podding stage. Roots of affected plants showed no external discoloration, but cross-sections showed darkbrown discoloration of xylem tissue. To isolate the causal agent, symptomatic plants were collected, and ten cuttings of symptomatic root tissue were surface disinfected with 2% sodium hypochlorite solution for 5 min, rinsed three times in sterile distilled water, air-dried on sterilized filter paper and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and water agar (WA) amended with streptomycin sulfate. After seven days of incubation, isolates were preliminarily identified according to their morphological characters and Fusarium Laboratory Manual. For each isolate 100, micro/macroconidia and chlamydospores were measured. Conidia were hyaline; macroconidia sickle-shaped, with blunt ends, 2-4 septa (10.1-17.7 x 3.1-5.8 μm); microconidia ellipsoidal, 0-1 septa (4.9-8.6-2.7-3.5 μm). Chlamydospores were globose (4.3-8.8 μm). Representative isolates (K343, K375 and K378) were purified by a single-spore technique for further analyses (Leslie and Summerell, 2006). Molecular identification of three representative isolates (K343, K375 and K378) was made by sequencing the rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and translation elongation factor 1α (TEF1) gen. For all isolates, the ITS and TEF1 genes were amplified and sequenced with primers ITS1/4 EF1-728 and EF1-986. Based on a BLAST search of the NCBI nucleotide database, the ITS sequences (GenBank MK920204.1, MK928423.1 and MK928424.1) had 99.8% identity with F. oxysporum f. sp. ciceris isolate (MK074845.1). The TEF1 (GenBank MN788462.1, MN788463.1 and MN788464.1) had 96.3 -100% identities with F. oxysporum f. sp. ciceris isolate (FJ538245.1). The pathogenicity test was conducted on 7-day old plants according to the drench method. The concentration of inoculation suspensions was adjusted on 1x106, and ten plants per isolate were tested and inoculated with 10 ml of suspension. Control plants were drenched with 10 ml of sterilized distilled water. Nine days after inoculation, first symptoms as leaves wilting and white mycelia presence around stem base occurred on plants inoculated with isolate K378. On day 11, the first symptoms occurred on plants inoculated with isolates K343 and K375 as well. Up to the 13th day after inoculation, all plants were wilted, and the pathogen was successfully reisolated and confirmed as F. oxysporum f.sp. ciceris. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of F. oxysporum f.sp. ciceris causing Fusarium wilt on chickpea in Serbia.

AB - Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the major vegetable species in the world. In Balkan cuisines, as well as in Serbia, pepper has a very diverse use. Knowledge about consumer preferences is of great importance for a breeding process as well as in the market-orientated production. Because of the lack of information about consumer preferences towards pepper types, in the Serbian market, the present research was conducted. Four hundred and two participants, classified into groups, according to gender, age and education, answered the survey questions. According to this research, the most preferred pepper type in Serbia is kapia, while the bell pepper is the second chosen type. Also, it was revealed that the most favourite colour of pepper fruit is red. There is a tendency for higher importance of fruit type rather than fruit colour. The highest percentage of hot pepper consumers prefers medium hot peppers. The obtained trend shows that women generally prefer less spicy pepper fruits than men.

AB - Pepper (Capsicum annuum) is one of the major vegetable species in the world, and Serbia as well. The pepper assortment of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops includes varieties of different fruit type such as the bell, conical, kapia, elongated, pepperoni and tomato-shaped peppers. However, in the assortment of the Institute, there is no variety of sweet pepper with conical and hanging fruits. Because of that, we wanted to develop a new pepper variety with this fruit type and offer it to the market. Selected lines from one of the crossbreeding combinations were grown in the open field and the greenhouse area by the pedigree method in the period 2012-2017. Based on the phenotype, the most vital plants that had the desired characteristics of the fruit were selected. During the many years of breeding, a new pepper variety NS Prva was obtained. NS
Prva has been registered in the Republic of Serbia in 2019 and from that period it has been on the National variety list. The fruits of this variety are about 150 g, have one peak, grow hanging on the plant, with light yellow colour in technological maturity, and red in full maturity. A new pepper variety NS Prva is recommended for growing in a greenhouse where it gives uniform fruits suitable for the market in all maturity stages. It can also be recommended for growing in the open field where it gives slightly longer fruits. NS Prva showed good storage ability three weeks after harvest since it had the smallest reduction in fruit weight during storage in a cold chamber.

Leguminoze imaju izuzetan agrotehnički značaj u svim sistemima poljoprivredne proizvodnje, a posebno u organskoj poljoprivredi (Bokan i sar. 2016).

AB - Intensive vegetable production nowadays is a large "energy consumer". Producers look only at the economic side of such production, which is most often the excuse for its current realization. Intensive vegetable production is now reduced to cultivating several vegetable species, more often in the single-crop system. By thinking this way we bring the entire production into an unsustainable situation. Therefore, vegetable production in a greenhouse should be organized by growing preceding crops, main crops and stubble crops. Intensive vegetable production implies the maximally well-organized use of available land and resources. This includes proper crop rotation and cultivation practices, as well as knowledge of the market, as a possibility of placing excess production. With the good organization of crop rotation and the timely replacement of crops, we can transform a greenhouse into a useful place for vegetable production.

AB - Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum, L.) is one of the most grown vegetable in the
world because of its nutritional contribution, therapeutic and pharmaceutical value.
Its significance in nutrition is due to high content of natural bioactive compounds
such as phenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, capsaicinoids as well as vitamin A, E and
C. The goal of this study was to determine content of total polyphenols, flavonoids
and potential antioxidant activity of different sweet pepper cultivars. The plant
material for this trial was methanol extracts of three different types of sweet pepper
fruit: bell pepper, kapia type and tomato-pepper type (one cultivar of each fruit type).
The fruits were collected at technological maturity. Determination of total phenolic
content (TP) was estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total flavonoids
content (TF) was carried out using a procedure based on the flavonoid characteristics
to build metal-complexes with aluminium chloride (AlCl3). Antioxidant capacity of
methanol extracts was measured by 2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-
sulphonic acid (ABTS) assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The
type of sweet pepper with the highest content of TP was tomato-pepper. Bell pepper
showed higher content of TF in comparison with tomato-pepper and kapia type
fruits. Concentration of phenolic compounds in bell pepper fruits was higher than
content in pepper with elongated fruits but lower than values in tomato-pepper.
According to both of antioxidant assays, tested tomato-pepper type exhibited higher
antioxidant activity than the other two pepper cultivars analysed in this paper
probably due to the highest level of TP. This result suggests that phenolic compounds
can make a significant contribution to antioxidant capacity of sweet pepper fruit.

AB - Wild species are widely used as potential sources of resistance of tomato to late blight (LB) (causal agent Phytophthora infestans). The biochemical response of wild and cultivated tomato genotypes with different levels of resistance to P. infestans was assessed through the total phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidative capacity. In total, six genotypes were included in the research - three cultivated tomato varieties and three wild species. The wild genotypes Solanum pimpinellifolium S 220 and Solanum habrochaites had a significantly lower infection rate compared to the other tested genotypes. After disease assessment on the leaves, biochemical analyses were performed. Grouping of the wild accessions according to principal component analysis (PCA) analysis indicated similar reaction to LB infection. Furthermore, late blight trait is closer to cultivated genotypes. Although the phenolics and flavonoids have high importance in the reaction of tomato plants to late blight infection, these traits are not closely related to wild species and the disease. According to this study, the antioxidative tests that indicate a response of wild species to late blight infection are total antioxidant activity (TAA), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and radical cation scavenging activity (ABTS).

AB - One of the main challenges in pepper production is to enhance seed germination energy and germination, and to grow healthy nursery plants with strong root system. Trichoderma species colonize roots as they grow and provide season-long benefits to plants, which is why Trichoderma species are widely used as plant growth promoter agents and promoters of plant defence mechanisms. This study evaluated the effectiveness of seed biopriming with Trichoderma isolates for growth promotion of pepper plants in early stage and their effects on seedling physiology. Nine out of ten Trichoderma isolates positively affected root weight of pepper seedlings, while three out of ten positively affected shoot weight. Root and shoot lengths were mainly unaffected. Germination energy was positively affected by five isolates with up to 40% increase compared to the control, while germination was significantly enhanced by two isolates with up to 22% increase. Considering seedling physiology, two different strain-dependent modes of actions were expressed. Promising Trichoderma isolates induced formation and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which acted as signal molecules that increased germination energy and germination. Positive correlation was found between pyrogallol peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase activity and germination in plants treated with these isolates.

abstract = "One of the main challenges in pepper production is to enhance seed germination energy and germination, and to grow healthy nursery plants with strong root system. Positive correlation was found between pyrogallol peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase activity and germination in plants treated with these isolates.",
