AB - In Serbia, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) production largely relies on improved commercial cultivars; however, many farmers still grow and maintain landraces. Productivity assessment of common bean landraces from Serbia may enrich knowledge of bean diversity from Western Balkans, Europe and worldwide. The study aims were to describe the underlying structure of a selected set of landraces and commercial cultivars of common bean, identify relatedness of accessions, and determine breeding values. Substantial variation in productivity was observed for bean landraces, with differences among gene pools and seed forms, revealing their agronomic value. Acknowledged structure of agronomic traits and recognised stratification will assist in multilevel organisation of common bean breeding programs.

AB - The goal of our research was to examine the competitive ability of selected soybean varieties and invasive weeds, and opportunity to select the most competitive soybean varieties based on their dry plant biomass. Field trials were conducted in 2020 and 2021 at location Novi Sad. Three varieties of soybeans with different morphological traits from the same maturity group (NS Apolo, Fortuna, NS Zmaj) and three very harmful and difficult to control invasive weeds (Abutilon theophrasti, Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Xanthium strumarium) were selected for the tests. The additive design with four replications were used. Soybean was sown at a density of 450,000 seeds ha‐1 and six rows per plot with inter‐row spacing of 50 cm. After soybean sowing, all weeds were sowed on the same time in four densities by hand (0.5, 1, 5 and 10 weeds per m‐1).

AB - Invazivni korovi Abutilon theophrasti, Ambrosia artemisiifolia i Xanthium strumarium, predstavljaju veliki izazov u proizvodnji soje i mogu značajno smanjiti prinos i profitabilnost ovog useva.

abstract = "Invazivni korovi Abutilon theophrasti, Ambrosia artemisiifolia i Xanthium strumarium, predstavljaju veliki izazov u proizvodnji soje i mogu značajno smanjiti prinos i profitabilnost ovog useva.

AB - Sunflower breeding and selection are continual processes designed to increase its yield and improve the resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding. However, classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions for tackling frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions. As response to shortcomings of classical breeding, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established Center of Excellence for Innovations in Breeding of Climate-Resilient Crops – Climate Crops aimed at introduction and application of new techniques such as (epi)genomic selection and genome editing, along with e fficient phenotyping platforms, for more effi cient trait introduction. Climate Crops aims to step up and stimulate excellence and innovation capacity of IFVCNS in sunflower improvement and enhance its ability to respond and create innovative solutions for the challenges that sunflower production, and agriculture as a whole face - climate changes and need to feed the increasing population.

AB - The most limiting factors in sunflowers production are weather conditions and plant diseases. Charcoal rot of sunflower is disease caused by soil-borne fungus Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. that gains importance in temperate regions. Control of charcoal rot is complicated due to pathogens long persistence in form of microsclerotia in the soil, often-delayed appearance of visible symptoms in plants and large number of host-plants. Due to that, development and use of resistant or tolerant sunflower genotypes is one of the most effective methods for charcoal rot management. The aim of this study was to determine variability of NS-sunflower inbred lines and hybrids in response to M. phaseolina infection and to detect tolerance within selected genotypes. Totally, 24 NS-sunflower commercial hybrids and 70 inbred lines were tested for tolerance to pathogen M. phaseolina at Rimski Šančevi, Novi Sad, during 2010 and 2011. For artificial inoculation two methods were used - Unwounded Stem Based Inoculation (USBI) which is close to natural infestation process and Toothpick Method which considers infestation by microslerotia through wound in plants.

AB - High seed protein content and low oil content are the most important criteria when introducing high protein confectionary hybrids into the production. Testing new hybrids and detection of hybrids that maintain stability of the tested traits under different agro-ecological conditions is an important part of breeding programs. In order to evaluate the stability of seed oil and protein content in NS confectionery sunflower hybrids under different environmental conditions, fifteen confectionery sunflower hybrids developed at IFVCNS were examined during 2015, 2016 and 2017, in a trial set up as a randomized block design with three repetitions at the location of Rimski Šančevi. The REML random model was used for evaluation of the effects of hybrids, years and their interaction, while the AMMI multivariational analysis was applied to determine genotype (hybrid) x environment (year) interaction. The effect of genotypes (G), environments (E), and their interaction (GE) was compared considering their contribution to the total variance. In terms of seed oil content, the effect of G (70.63 %) played a more important role than the effects of E (19.36%) and GE (10%).

AB - Early maturity is a highly important factor in the interrelations between yield, grain moisture, and plant density, contributing to cost-efficient maize production. Landraces conserved in gene banks present a promising basis for enriching the diversity of early maize breeding material. To start and speed up the mobilization of the maize genetic resources maintained in the ex situ Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje gene bank collection, which are currently scattered, little studied, and underused, 63 landraces were selected as new potential sources of early maturity; their test-cross performance with two divergent early testers was evaluated. The majority of the landraces with a prevailed flint type (29) exhibited heterosis for yield when crossed with the Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic—Iowa Dent tester (102NS), out of which 20 top crosses expressed grain moisture below the defined threshold value (21.1%). The best performing landraces can be used as a starting point for a new pre-breeding programme for the broadening of flint maize breeding material. In parallel, nine landraces expressed simultaneous heterosis when crossed with the flint tester (14NS), exhibiting grain moisture above the threshold value. A simultaneous heterotic effect with two divergent inbred testers implies the existence of an independent heterotic pool. These findings will contribute to the broadening of maize breeding material for early maturity and low grain moisture at harvest, which are important goals in maize breeding.

AB - Dark red corn is rich in anthocyanins, which belong to phenolic compounds, one of the largest families of antioxidants. Due to numerous, beneficial biological activities of these compounds, this crop is rising in popularity. Unfortunately, the use of dark red corn in the temperate zone is limited, so the breeding activities in this sense are negligible. To maximize profitability and meet technological and growing demands, both biochemical and agronomic performances of such materials have to be considered. A preliminary study was conducted to test the variability of total phenolic compounds and some agronomic traits in NS01RB, a broad based population of dark red corn. 352 full sibs were tested in an incomplete block design with replicates in sets. Data were collected for grain yield, grain moisture, ASI, stay green, stalk lodging, ear rotting and grain color. Significant genetic variability existed among full sibs for all studied traits. A subset of 132 full sibs that showed the highest level of tolerance to ear rotting was selected for biochemical analysis. Mean values for the total phenolic compound ranged from 0.66 to 4.83 mg/g. Basic genetic parameters, relationships and mean values of the examined traits showed that the studied material represents a valuable source of phenolic compounds and could be used in a breeding program.

AB - Peas (Pisum sativum L.) are an important source of vegetable protein for both humans and animals. However, pea seed proteins are limited in sulfur-containing amino acids (SCAA) and thus considered to be an insufficient source. The main seed proteins in pea are 7S (vicilins, convicilins) and 11S (legumins) globulins. Because 11S globulins contain more SCAA than 7S globulins, variations in the 7S/11S ratio affects the nutritional quality of pea seeds. Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) was used to separate seed proteins from 260 pea genotypes from around the world (the EUCLEG collection). Based on the electropherogram, 18 protein bands were densitometrically measured. Protein compositional data are intrinsically multivariate. The protein concentration of each genotype is presented in closed form i.e., sum up to 100%. Therefore, for multivariate data analysis specific statistical methodology was used. All methods used in the study were carried out in classical and robust manner that was resistant to outlier observations. The storage protein composition of the genotypes studied varied greatly; in some cases, only traces of the main components were found. The results suggest that some of the genotypes tested could be useful in various breeding programs aimed at producing agronomically viable plants, yielding high-protein seed with specific composition of storage proteins for specific food applications.

AB - Cycloxydim Tolerant Maize (CTM) was developed at the University of Minnesota, USA. CTM plants contain a nuclear, partially dominant single gene mutation (known as Acc1) that confer tolerance to cycloxydim. Cycloxydim is a systemic, post emergence herbicide for grass weeds control in dicot crops. Conventional maize is susceptible to cycloxydim, so the gene of tolerance must be introduced in both inbred parents to provide complete tolerance of CTM hybrids. Although this increase the number of required conversions, many seed companies have commercialized CTM hybrids. Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad was the first to commercialize CTM hybrid in Serbia. Application of cycloxydim based product in CTM hybrids can provide efficient and reliable control of annual and perennial grass weeds without risk of phytotoxicity to the crop. Also, the technology is suitable for use in intercropping (an example: CTM + beans).

AB - Early maturity is very important factor in the yield, grain moisture and plant density game, contributing to cost-efficient maize production. Landraces conserved in gene banks present a promising basis to enrich diversity of early maize breeding material. To start and speed-up the mobilization of currently scattered, unknown and underused maize genetic resources maintained in ex situ Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje gene bank collection, 63 landraces, as new potential sources of earliness and low grain moisture at harvest, were selected for evaluation of their test-cross performance with two divergent early testers. The majority of landraces (29), with prevailed flint type, exhibited heterosis for yield in crossings with BSSS-ID tester (102NS), where 20 top-crosses expressed grain moisture below defined threshold value (21.1%). The best performing landraces can be used as a starting-point of new pre-breeding programme for flint maize breeding material broadening. In parallel, nine landraces expressed simultaneous heterosis in crossings with flint tester (14NS), exhibiting grain moisture above threshold value. Simultaneous heterotic effect with two divergent inbred testers implied to the existence of an independent heterotic pool. These findings will contribute to broadening of maize breeding material for earliness and low grain moisture at harvest as important goals in maize breeding.

AB - Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the most important Allium species in terms of worldwide production and various usages in human nutrition, medicine, pharmacy and cosmetics. Basic method of garlic propagation is vegetative and creation of new varieties is mainly achieved by clonal selection. The characterization and preservation of samples in germplasm collections is of crucial importance in plant breeding, as well as availability of information about number and characteristics of samples in gene banks. Since pheotypic traits can vary significantly under the influence of environmental factors the characterization is more reliable by using DNA markers. Effective characterization of samples in collections and identification of duplicates is important from the economic aspect, ie. space saving and maintenance costs. The garlic collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (IFVCNS) includes 63 samples of autumn and 67 samples of spring garlic. These genotypes represent a valuable genetic pool for the selection of clones with appropriate characteristics, highly adapted for the production in the agro-climatic conditions of Serbia. Molecular characterization will provide more complete insight into diversity of samples, identification of potential duplicates and enable breeders more efficient selection and development of new cultivars.
