AB - Proteins of plant origin have a profound impact on human and animal lives. It is impossible to solve worldwide nutrition problem without taking into concern needs for proteins. Inadequate nutrition can only be improved by providing adequate proteins. Humans need c. 120g proteins daily, a third of which should come from meat and milk. Certain population categories, such as the sick, children, pregnant women and sportspeople are more sensitive to lack of protein. Oil crops synthesise oil, which is the basic reserve material in seed, but they also synthesise high levels of protein and can serve as protein source for human and animal nutrition. Generally speaking, protein content in seed of rapeseed at site R. Šančevi was from 19.60% (NS-L-74) to 25.93% JR-NS-36), and at site Sombor from 19.26% (NS-L-74) to 24.06% and 24.09% (NS-L-46 and cultivar Mira). Genotype NS-L-74 had the lowest protein content at both testing sites. Higher protein content was evident with spring genotypes than with winter gentypes.
AB - Proteini biljnog porekla imaju veliki značaj u životu čoveka i životinja.

AB - Genetic markers have been used at Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad for a number of years, both for seed quality control and for research purposes. The Laboratory for Seed Testing was the first in the former Yugoslavia to use the method of control of hybrid seed genetic purity based on enzymatic polymorphism. This paper presents the application of protein markers, isozymes, seed storage proteins and DNA markers for evaluation of seed and breeding materials of various agricultural crops in Serbia.

AB - Oilseed rape is an agronomically important species grown for seed that contains 40-48% oil and 18-25% proteins. Oilseed rape has high demands for nitrogen. The research was performed on four varieties of oilseed rape (Banaćanka, Valeska, Slavica and Express) developed at Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, during vegetative seasons 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. During vegetation, top dressing was applied with different amounts of KAN: control (0 kg N ha-1), 50 kg N ha-1, 100 kg N ha-1, 150 kg N ha-1 and the N quantity determination were performed applying the balancing method (also known as N-min method). Yield, 1000-seed weight, seed germination, oil and protein content were determined after harvest. Yield and seed germination depended on seed production year. 1000-seed weight depended on seed production year and genotype. Oil and protein content in seed depended on production year, genotype and amount of the N-fertilizer applied by top dressing.

AB - Cytogenetic research of sunflower and rapeseed has a century long tradition. Chromosome number and morphology were studied at first in species from the Helianthus and Brassica genera, and than their cytotaxonomy and phylogenesis. Cytogenetic research facilitated gene transfer from wild into cultivated species, in vitro plant growing, understanding and usage of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), fertility restoration, etc. This paper describes various research aspects used in the cytogenetic laboratory of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, the results of which were used in sunflower and rapeseed breeding.
AB - Citogenetska istraživanja suncokreta i uljane repice imaju tradiciju dugu čitav vek.

AB - Genetically modified (GMO) rapeseed (Brassica napus) is not grown commercially in European Union, but several lines have been approved for production and use as food and feed. A case-specific monitoring of herbicide-tolerant rapeseed, events RT73, RF3 and T45 was established by Ministry of Agriculture of Republic of Serbia. The objectives of the present study were to introduce methods for detection of herbicide-tolerant GM oilseed rape, investigate occurrence and monitor the presence of GM rapeseed in seed and the feed products, as well as to develop a protocol for quantification. The study was based on 48 samples, rapeseed (33) and feed (15) products, imported from EU countries (Germany, Belgium, France, Czech Republic, Austria) and from domestic market. Seven positive feed samples and no positive seed samples have found. The percent of GMO in feed samples, estimated on semi-quantitative way, was below labelling threshold. Adventitious presence of GM materials in non-GM grain, derived food and feedstuffs is a concern to international grain trade and needs continuous monitoring.

AB - The importance of rapeseed as a crop is increasing both in the world and in Serbia. Rapeseed is used as oil and protein source in different branches of processing industry. Different forms (winter and spring) enable rapeseed cultivation in different environmental conditions. Soil cultivation, sowing and harvesting time as well as fertilization should be adjusted to the soil type and climatic conditions of each region. It is necessary to follow the basic rules of crop cultivation such as crop rotation and optimal time for each cultivation operation in order to achieve high seed yields. Varieties in '00' type - without erucic acid and with low glucozinolate content are the most commonly grown. Spring forms of rapeseed have lower yield and mature later than winter forms, but they can be grown in areas with less favorable climate.
Raznolikost formi (ozime i jare) i sortimenta, omogućava joj gajenje u različitim agroekološkim uslovima. Način obrade zemljišta, vremena setve i žetve i đubrenje treba prilagoditi kvalitetu zemljišta i klimatskim uslovima svakog regiona.

AB - The program of winter rapeseed breeding at Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops covers the development of winter and spring rapeseed cultivars and hybrids. Winter rapeseed cultivars are selected for high and stabile grain and oil yield, good oil quality, low erucic acid and glucosinolate content (type 00) and tolerance to stresses caused by abiotic and biotic factors. This paper reviews agronomic characteristics and grain and oil quality of a new cultivar of winter rapeseed Jasna. In the trials of the Serbian Commission for new cultivars registration, cultivar Jasna had higher grain yield then standard, in the three locations and two years. In average the yield was 4566 kg/ha. Oil content is at the level of the standard. The erucic acid content and glucosinolate content are lower then that in the standard and that are positive characteristics. .

AB - The genetic diversity and relationships among rapeseed genotypes were evaluated using quantitative analysis and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Ten morphological and biochemical traits (plant height, height to the first branch, stem diameter, branch number, leaf number, pod number, seed yield per plant, 1000-seed weight, oil content and protein content) were analyzed in a three-year field experiment with 30 winter rapeseed genotypes. RAPD analysis was performed with 13 primers, chosen according to previous results. Significant genetic variability among the genotypes was obtained at both the morphological and molecular level. Nine out of the thirteen RAPD primers that were used for the analysis enabled the estimation of DNA polymorphism of the genotypes, while the other primers were monomorphic. Dendrograms obtained for morpho-biochemical traits and for the RAPD results were compared. In both cases partial grouping of genotypes based on their geographical origin was established.
