AB - The two most important criteria for introducing new confectionary hybrids into production are high seed and protein yield. That is why it is important to find the traits that are measurable, and that at the same time show a strong correlation with seed and protein yield, so that they can be used as a criteria for confectionary hybrid breeding. Results achieved during 2008 at the locations Rimski Šančevi (Region of Vojvodina) and Kula (Central Serbia) show that the new confectionary hybrids are expressing higher seed yields in comparison to standards (Vranac and Cepko) though with a lower seed oil content. A very strong positive correlation was determined between seed yield and seed protein content, kernel content and mass of 1000 seeds. A very strong positive correlation was determined between seed protein content, seed yield and mass of 1000 seeds, with protein yield. This indicates that seed yield, seed protein content and mass of 1000 seeds have a high influence on protein yield. The degree of interdependence between different traits is a sign of direction which is supposed to facilitate better planning of sunflower breeding program.

AB - Path coefficient analysis was used to separate direct and indirect effects of studied traits on seed oil content and seed yield, and to identify traits that could be used as selection criteria in sunflower breeding. Significant and highly significant correlations were found between most of the examined traits. Highly significant negative correlations have been established between stem diameter, total leaf area per plant, head diameter and 1,000-seed weight on one side and seed oil content on the other. Highly significant positive correlations have been established between seed yield on one side and stem diameter, total leaf area per plant, head diameter, total number of seeds per head, and the 1,000-seed weight on the other. The weight of 1,000 seeds had a highly significant direct negative effect on seed oil content and a highly significant direct positive effect on seed yield. The total number of seeds per head has demonstrated a highly significant direct positive effect on seed yield and oil content. The total leaf number per plant has demonstrated a significant direct positive effect on seed yield. A path coefficient analysis of seed yield at phenotypic level indicated that maximum direct effects were shown by the weight of 1,000 seeds, total number of seeds per head and total leaf number per plant. The total number of seeds per head was the most important trait that determined seed yield and oil content. The obtained results can be used in sunflower breeding programs aimed at the development of sunflower hybrids that combine high genetic potentials for seed yield and seed oil content.

AB - The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between SSR based genetic distance (GD) of new NS sunflower inbred lines and heterosis for six agronomic traits. Twenty three sunflower inbred lines (20 restorer lines and three female lines used as testers) and their hybrids were examined for plant height, head diameter, thousand seed mass, oil content, seed yield per plant and oil yield per plant. Significant heterosis was observed in hybrid combinations for all examined traits except oil content. Genetic distance between pairs of tested sunflower inbred lines ranged from 0.13 to 0.8. There was no significant positive correlation between genetic distance and mid- and better-parent heterosis, specific combining ability and mean value in any of the examined traits for all 60 hybrids. A highly significant negative correlation was found between GD and mean oil percentage (r=-0.33 p lt 0.01). Although GD was generally a poor predictor of heterosis, better results are obtained if hybrid combinations for each tester and each trait are analyzed separately.

AB - The basic goal of sunflower breeding at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops is the creation of standard hybrids with a high oil content and seed and oil yields and resistance to dominant diseases and drought. Beside that, confectionery hybrids for special food and feed purposes are also produced. In this respect, apart from breeding in order to improve the main seed yield components, special attention is given to an increase of protein content and quality, decrease of seed oil content, increase of 1,000-seed weight, and decrease of hull content. The goal of this paper was to examine the value of the new experimental sunflower hybrids of the confectionery type in relation to the standard hybrids.

AB - One of the directions in sunflower breeding is the selection for resistance to broomrape. The population of broomrape has been stable in Serbia for a long period of time, but the racial composition has changed in recent years, with race E being predominant in the regions of north Bačka and Banat. Cultivated sunflower is genetically narrow and deficient in many desirable genes. Its genetic variability can be increased by the use of wild sunflower species and interspecific hybridization. The resistance to broomrape in 15 new experimental hybrids was tested on locations in Serbia (Pačir) during three years (2006, 2007 and 2008) and in Romania (Baragan, Braila) during 2008. These hybrids were produced by crossing female inbred lines (Ha-26PR-A, PH-BC2-92-A and Ha-98-A) susceptible to broomrape race E and new Rf inbred lines (RHA-D-2, RHA-D-5, RHA-D- 6, RHA-D-7, RHA-D-8), developed from interspecific populations originating from H. deserticola and resistant to race E. All examined hybrids were resistant to broomrape in both locations. Since broomrape race F is present in the location in Romania, it is expected that the new Rf inbred lines - male components of the examined hybrids, possess the resistance gene for race F also.

abstract = "One of the directions in sunflower breeding is the selection for resistance to broomrape. Since broomrape race F is present in the location in Romania, it is expected that the new Rf inbred lines - male components of the examined hybrids, possess the resistance gene for race F also.",

AB - Sunflower downy mildew has a great economic importance in countries where sunflower is grown. Primary infected plants significantly decrease seed yields while secondary infection has no significant influence. Major objective of this study was to developed sunflower genotypes genetically resistant to dominant races of downy mildew in Serbia. During this work two co-dominant CAPS markers for Pl-6 gene were developed which can also be used for Pl-7 gene. For introduction of these genes in breeding program marker assisted selection (MAS) was used. Developed commercial sunflower inbred lines exhibit resistance to all known races of downy mildew in our country indicated incorporation of resistance to downy mildew in well-known and widely produced hybrids VELJA, KAZANOVA and RIMI-PR. Pl-genes were introduced to large number of new inbred lines and new downy mildew resistant hybrids PLAMEN, SREMAC, DUŠKO and OLIVA were released. These new hybrids reach higher seed and oil yields then hybrids widely produced.

AB - The genetic diversity and relationships among rapeseed genotypes were evaluated using quantitative analysis and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Ten morphological and biochemical traits (plant height, height to the first branch, stem diameter, branch number, leaf number, pod number, seed yield per plant, 1000-seed weight, oil content and protein content) were analyzed in a three-year field experiment with 30 winter rapeseed genotypes. RAPD analysis was performed with 13 primers, chosen according to previous results. Significant genetic variability among the genotypes was obtained at both the morphological and molecular level. Nine out of the thirteen RAPD primers that were used for the analysis enabled the estimation of DNA polymorphism of the genotypes, while the other primers were monomorphic. Dendrograms obtained for morpho-biochemical traits and for the RAPD results were compared. In both cases partial grouping of genotypes based on their geographical origin was established.

AB - The foundation of the Industrial Crops Department (later renamed the Oil Crops Department) in 1962 marked the start of sunflower breeding at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The Department was among the first in the world to develop productive sunflower hybrids based on cytoplasmic male sterility (such hybrids were developed early in France and Romania as well). The main goal of the Institute's sunflower program is to develop sunflower hybrids with high seed and oil yields that are resistant to the common sunflower diseases and drought. The program also develops hybrids for special purposes. These include sunflowers with altered oil quality, confectionery hybrids, hybrids to be used as poultry or bird feed, hybrids tolerant of certain herbicide groups (imidazolinones, tribenuron methyl), and ornamental sunflowers. Over the past 40 years, the IFVC sunflower team has developed a total of 178 sunflower hybrids, 130 of which were released abroad. The Institute also has well-developed cooperation programs on joint hybrid development with over 30 foreign partner companies from around the world, enabling the utilization of genetic variability on an international level. These have produced a total of 125 joint hybrids released in different European and non-European countries that play a major role in the global sunflower production, most notably in countries such as France, Russia, Ukraine, China, and so on. The leading NS hybrids in Serbian commercial sunflower production are NS-H-111, Bačvanin, Banaćanin and Velja. These will eventually be replaced on the fields by the latest batch of top-quality NS genotypes that includes the hybrids Sremac, Šumadinac, Baća, Kazanova, Duško, Branko, Oliva and Novosađanin. .
Njihovo mesto polako zauzimaju novi hibridi suncokreta Sremac, Šumadinac, Baća, Kazanova, a uskoro i Duško, Branko, Oliva i Novosađanin. .

AB - One of the directions in sunflower breeding is selection for the resistance to broomrape. The population of broomrape has been stable in Serbia for a longer period of time, but the racial composition has changed in recent years, with race E being predominant in the regions of north Backa and Banat. Cultivated sunflower is genetically narrow and deficient in many desirable genes. Its genetic variability can be increased by the use of wild sunflower species and interspecific hybridization.
The resistance of 15 new experimental hybrids to broomrape was tested on locations in Serbia (Pačir) during three years (2006, 2007, 2008) and in Romania (Baraganu, Bralia) during 2008. These hybrids were produced by crossing female inbred lines (Ha-26PR-A, PH-BC2-92-A and Ha-98-A) susceptible to broomrape and new Rf inbred lines (RHA-D-2, RHA-D-5, RHA-D-6, RHA-D-7, RHA-D-8), developed from interspecies population originating from H. deserticola, and resistant to broomrape race E. All examined hybrids were resistant to broomrape on both locations. Since broomrape race F is present on location in Romania, it is expected that the new Rf inbred lines-male components of examined hybrids, have the resistance gene for race F also.

AB - In this paper, we have studied the interdependence of seed yield per plant and the following
morphophysiological traits: total leaf number per plant, total leaf area per plant, plant height, total seed number per head, head diameter, weight of 1,000 seeds and oil content. Path coefficient analysis was used to separate direct and indirect effects of studied traits on seed yield, and to identify traits that could be used as selection criteria in sunflower breeding. The research was conducted during two vegetation seasons on 21 experimental sunflower hybrids, produced within the breeding program at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops. Among the large number of examined traits, significant and highly significant correlations were found. A strong positive correlation between the weight of 1,000 seeds and seed yield (0.791**) was determined. On the contrary, a strong negative correlation between oil content and seed yield was found (-0.649**). The biggest highly significant positive effect on seed yield was determined for the following traits: the weight of 1,000 seeds (0.789**), total seed number per head (0.473**) and total leaf number per plant (0.199**). Total leaf area per plant has demonstrated a significant direct positive effect on seed yield (0.139*). The weight of 1,000 seeds and total seed number per head were the most important traits for seed yield. Based on the coefficient of determination in F1 generation R2=0.92), it can be concluded that the influence of all traits involved in the study on total variability of seed yield per plant, was 92%.

AB - Review of the achievements at the rapeseed breeding in Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops is given in this paper. Rapeseed oil is becoming more competitive in the oil market. The main goals of rapeseed breeding are creation of "00" type cultivars and hybrids with the genetic potential for high yield and seed oil content, increase of disease resistance, as well as increased resistance to low temperatures. Increase in yield could be achieved by creation of cultivars resistant to prevalent pathogens and tolerant to stress. Value of the cultivar is primarily determined by seed and oil yield. The task of breeders is to create new cultivars and hybrids with high and stable yield and the increased nutritive value of seed with the use of conventional and methods of biotechnology.

AB - In this paper 25 varietal populations ofB. napus (20 winter and 5 spring type), three populations ofB. oleracea and one population ofB. rapa were investigated. The composition of fatty acids in oil was examined by gas chromatography. Polymorphism of genomic DNA, extracted from frozen leaves of the same plant material, was screened with SSR markers. Genetic distances between examined populations were calculated on the basis of polymorphic markers. Data were statistically analyzed with UPGMA method. The resulting dendrogram revealed relations between examined populations. The results on variability of plant material based on fatty acid composition of oil and differences in genomic DNA are comparable.
AB - U radu je ispitivano 25 sortnih populacija uljane repice (B. napus) i to dvadeset ozimih i pet jarih formi, zatim tri populacije ozimog stočnog kelja (B. oleracea) i jedna populacija B. rapa.

AB - Two nearly isogenic lines of sunflower, resistant and susceptible to downy mildew, due to the presence/absence of the Pl6 gene, were used in this study. Inoculation with the suspension of Plasmopara halstedii zoospores, was done on the plants in the phase of first pair of leaves. In the samples taken from 2nd to 96th h after inoculation, content of phenolic compounds in methanolic extracts from frozen leaves were analyzed (UV-VIS and HPLC analysis). A constitutive level of phenolic compounds, as well as, their accumulation after the inoculation were higher in the susceptible than in the resistant isogenic line. Chlorogenic, ferulic acid and esculin had the highest contribution to the phenolic compound accumulation 24 h after the inoculation in the susceptible line, while only the chlorogenic acid and eculin accumulated in the resistant line. Also, there was a trend of scopoletin accumulation in the resistant line.
