AB - With aim to improve characterization and eventually, utilisation of garlic collection from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Serbia, the genetic diversity of 52 accessions was estimated
based on microsatellite markers, agronomic, biochemical and phenotypic traits (UPOV descriptor).
The Shannon index H′ with a value of 0.47–0.95 indicated a high level of diversity for the greatest
number of examined traits according to the UPOV descriptor. Based on agronomic and biochemical traits, groups of genotypes with the highest potential for yield and bioactive properties improvement were singled out. Molecular evaluation indicated the presence of duplicates in the collection and necessity of further research with additional number of DNA markers. The obtained results are important from the aspects of breeding and development of new varieties with improved yield and functional value as well as more economical conservation of genetic resources. Since diversity of plant genetic resources constantly decreases, the obtained results have long-term significance because preserved and genetically variable collections represent a valuable source of desirable genes for future human needs.

AB - One of the major challenges that plant breeders face in the 21st century is food safety for growing human population coupled with extreme climate changes. Accordingly, the most important breeders’ goal is to find appropriate methods in response to these challenges in order to create high-yielding varieties resilient to abiotic and biotic stressors. The aim of this study was to determine optimal doses of gamma irradiation in two wheat and one barley varieties and to apply the identified doses for development of mutant populations. Wheat and barley varieties showed different reactions to applied doses of gamma irradiation. Wheat varieties had germination rate over 90% at all applied doses while barley seeds showed to be more susceptible to gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation had greater influence on seedling height which was clearly
demonstrated by growth reduction with increasing radiation doses. ANOVA showed a significant
difference between genotypes, applied doses of gamma radiation as well as genotype by doses
interaction for seedling height. At highest dose of 600 Gy, the reduction of seedling height was
94.6%, 96.5% and 96.8% in Simonida, Rudnik and NS 40S, respectively. The irradiation doses that
resulted in seedling growth reduction by 50% (GR50) were 210 Gy for barley Rudnik and wheat
NS 40S, and 310 Gy for wheat variety Simonida. Identified doses were used for the irradiation of
2000 seeds of each variety in order to produce mutant populations that will be further used in a breeding program for development of varieties with increased resilience to climate change.

AB - Changes in yield components and spike traits are associated with wheat grain yield genetic progress. The aim of this study was to determine variation in yield components, spike and individual grain traits, and their role in winter wheat grain yield genetic improvement under conditions of the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, two-year field trials were conducted in a southern Pannonian location (Novi Sad, Serbia) with ten winter wheat cultivars released between 1931 and 2015. The grain yield had a significant positive linear relationship with the year of cultivar release, showing the improvement rate of 46.4 kg ha−1 yr−1. Grain yield increase has been positively related to the improvement of spike grain weight. Spike grain weight improvement with a rate of 0.25 g yr−1 was followed by simultaneous rise of the individual grain number and grain weight at different positions within a spikelet. Compared to other grains at different positions within a spikelet, G3 grains showed the highest rate of grain weight and the grain number improvement with the year of cultivar release. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease trend of grain protein content in individual grains at different positions. Therefore, wheat breeders should be more focused on grain number and weight improvement of distal grains in order to regain higher grain yield genetic gain under conditions of the Pannonian Plain.

AB - To enhance wheat productivity through advancements in crop production technology and breeding methodology, it is necessary to improve our understanding of the physiological processes associated with biomass accumulation, nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency. Therefore, a field trial with six winter wheat cultivars grown under conditions of four different sowing dates during two growing seasons was conducted to quantify the influence of cultivars and sowing date on variation in nitrogen use efficiency traits, biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake, and their role in grain yield and nitrogen yield determination. Results showed that delaying sowing from October to November reduced grain yield by 1.49 t ha−1 on average per sowing date, and also caused a reduction of 14.6 and 14.3 kg ha−1 in nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, respectively. Late sowing negatively impacted both grain yield and nitrogen grain yield in winter wheat cultivars, which was attributed to changes in biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, as well as a decrease in nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen uptake efficiency. The decrease in nitrogen use efficiency under late sowing was primarily due to a decrease in nitrogen uptake efficiency, as the increase in nitrogen utilization efficiency could not compensate for the nitrogen uptake efficiency decrease. The study findings suggest that midearly cultivars produced the highest average grain under different sowing conditions, mainly due to greater biomass accumulation during the pre-anthesis period, which provided additional nitrogen storage capacity. Therefore, under conditions of the Pannonian Plain wheat producers should be focused on the medium early cultivars characterized by increased pre-anthesis biomass accumulation.

Therefore, under conditions of the Pannonian Plain wheat producers should be focused on the medium early cultivars characterized by increased pre-anthesis biomass accumulation.",

Tokom sezone, bilo je izuzetno toplih jesenjih i zimskih perioda, umerenih temperatura u prolećnom delu vegetacije i obilnih padavina u fazama formiranja, nalivanja i sazrevanja zrna.

AB - For thousands of years, cereal grains have been a primary source for the nutrition of the human population and during the period after major crops’ domestication, agriculture radically transformed human societies worldwide. The most important cereal species in agriculture are maize, rice, wheat, triticale, rye, barley, oats, sorghum, and millets, with a total yield of more than 2750 million tonnes (FAOSTAT, 2021). For the majority of the population, cereal crops remain the major source of calories. In developing countries, cereals provide about 60% of the calories, while in the poorest countries cereal parts in daily calories uptake reach more than 80% (Awika, 2011). On the other hand, in the developed world, approximately 30% of the calories come directly from cereals. Moreover, cereals are essential for animal feed in about 36% of world consumption and industrial.

Visoka tehnologija gajenja poljoprivrednih useva smanjuje negativan uticaj meteoroloških uslova.
AB - Wheat (Triticum spp.) is one of the most adaptable crop species due to its ability to adjust to the variations of the environmental factors. However, high temperatures, precipitation quantity and distribution during plant development and grain filling affect biochemical processes and consequently grain quality. Advanced technology in growing agricultural crops decreases the negative impact of meteorological conditions. On the other hand, increased technological development and intensified agricultural production cause global climate change. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of abiotic factors (minimum, maximum and optimum average temperature and precipitation sum) on the quality of winter wheat grain. Twenty national and international winter wheat cultivars were analyzed in two growing seasons. The trial was carried out on the experimental fields and in laboratories of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops.

AB - Due to the progress in both plant breeding and crop production, over the last few decades wheat grain yield has more than doubled in southeastern Europe, as in the Republic of Serbia. Also, earlier studies have reported the relationship between senescence dynamics and grain yield main components, along with other agronomic wheat traits. Acceleration of plant senescence reduces the duration of grain filling, and may have a negative impact on the final grain weight if the mechanisms to exploit the resources gained during the photosynthetic period are unavailable. Therefore, a stay-green phenotype could be one of the breeding aims, since the longer duration of green leaf area is related to mechanisms and traits that alleviate negative environmental effects during the grain filling. In order to determine the variability of stay-green traits, over several years, various vegetative indexes were continuously monitored in a historical set of wheat cultivars.

AB - Cereals are grasses (a monocot family Poaceae, also known as Gramineae) cultivated widely for their grains used in human and animal consumption. From ancient times, cereals have played an important role in world agriculture and nowadays their significance is illustrated by the overall production of 2.996 million tons being harvested globally in 2020 (FAOSTAT, 2021). The most important staple cereal crops are wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, barley, oats, and millet. However, wheat, rice, and maize together comprise at least 75% of the world’s grain production, with 761, 757, and 1.162 million tons harvested in 2020, respectively. Rice, sorghum, millet, and wheat are widely produced in Asia; corn and sorghum in America; and barley, rye, and oats in Europe. These three continents produce together 80% of the world’s cereal grains. Cereals are a pivotal nutrient source in both developed and developing countries since their grains contain major nutritional and energy sources (proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids, fibers) as well as micronutrients (vitamins, magnesium, and zinc) (O’Neil et al., 2010; Papanikolaou & Fulgoni, 2017). However, the utilization pattern of these cereal grains differs. In developed countries, more than 70% of total cereal production is fed to the animals, whereas in underdeveloped countries, 68%–98% of the cereal production is used for human consumption.

AB - The increasing pressure of climate change, reduction of genetic diversity on farms and constant decrease in arable land present the most challenging aspects for today's crop production. Reintroduction of diverse adapted local varieties and underutilised landraces of wheat, potentially tolerant to different biotic and abiotic stresses, could ensure stable yield under low-input agriculture. The uncharacterized local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat from Serbia and Bulgaria, were collected from small-scale farms and gene banks within a project funded by the Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, aiming to evaluate their genetic diversity. As a part of this comprehensive project, the selected material was evaluated using different molecular marker techniques. The level of genetic diversity and relatedness of a set of 90 Serbian and Bulgarian local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat was assessed using microsatellite molecular markers and 25K wheat Infinium Array. The total of 141 alleles was detected at 20 microsatellite loci with an average number of 7.05 alleles per locus. The PIC value varied from 0.344 to 0.837.

AB - Hull-less barley is an underutilized crop, mostly used for human consumption, representing less than 2% of the entire barley production in both Europe and Serbia. CROPDIVA's priority is to select and improve of hull-less barley breeding for many important characteristics related to yield and quality. The consumption of naked barley has significant positive effects on human health. A total of 360 spring naked barley genotypes was used to evaluate genetic variability. This panel comprised of 300 diverse accessions from IPK genebank collection and 10 standards representing commercial and well-adapted cultivars from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, and Serbia. The trial was conducted at Rimski sancevi (N45°19" E 19°50') in Serbia, following soybean as the previous crop. The size of micro plots was 1 m2 setup in an augmented block design using 10 standards in six repetitions. The sowing time was on 10th March using standard agronomic practices. During the season, the following traits were measured: date ofemergence, canopy size using Canopeo application during growth and developmental phases (G511,GS31, GS59), heading time, straw length, lodging, and yield. After harvesting season, we will beginmeasuring yield component traits and quality parameters such as: total biomass, spike number, grain weight, thousand grain weight, grains per spike, harvest index, specific weight, grain colour — staining, treshability, beta-glucan, and nitrogen content. Canopeo values in GS11 (first leaf unfolded - ligule visible), in GS31 (first node detectable) and in GS59 (ear completely emerged above flag leaf ligule) growth stages ranged from 0.48 to 4.99, from 25.7 to 82.02 and 10.95 and 94.01, respectively. Heading day occurred within 23 days’ time window, from 17 May to 10 June. The average straw length was 66 cm, varied from to 30 cm to 95 cm. Approximately one third of the accessions was prone to lodging. Preliminary results have shown that the selected IPK collection possesses significant diversity which canserve as a good basis in a further hull-less breeding program.

AB - Traditional farming practices, focussing on cultivating single crops have detrimental effects such as high input of agrochemicals, soil erosion, and the development of pesticide-resistant pests. Furthermore, the use and production of nitrogen fertilisers in such systems can lead to the release of CO, contributing to climate change. Hence, agroecosystems that combine robust crop yields with reduced resource inputs are needed and there is a rising interest in cereal-legume intercropping. However, challenges remain, including the difficulty of managing the variable proportions of each species in the harvested mixture and the limited understanding of how individual crops perform within intercropping systems. The aim of this study was to estimate how intercropping of hull-less barley and oat with pea contribute to better crop performance under climatic conditions of Serbia. The trials were conducted at Rimski Šančevi (Vojvodina, North province of Serbia) using a RCBD design with four replicates. Sowing densities were 30% (hull-ess barley or oats):70% (pea). On average, the yield of hull-less barley (Golijat) and oats (Dunav) in 2022 and 2023 was notably higher in pure stands compared to intercropping practices.

AB - Naked (hulless) barley is а type of barley with free-threshing grains that is especially suited for human food. Barley is sadly overlooked as а food |п Europe, despite its health properties, especially beta-glucan soluble fibre, and the barley crop needing lower inputs than wheat and its ability to grow in more marginal conditions expected due to climate change. Due to the small market for seed, пакед barley has not been а рпогку for European plant breeders, but а wide diversity is available т the IPK genebank. CROPDIVA partners tested 300 hulless barley accessions at three sites 1п Serbia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Ап augmented design was used with 10 standards - hulled and hulless barley varieties from all three countries апа Germany, each replicated six times within each experimental site. Crop establishment was estimated using Сапорео at 6511, and crop biomass estimated аг GS31 and 6559, also using Canopeo. Disease and lodging were scored, time to 6559 recorded, and grain yield and yield components measured. Post-harvest, beta-glucan concentration гп the grain and the percentage of the grains threshing freely from the hull are the most important traits of interest. Тћеге was а high degree ог phenotypic diversity in crop height, ear type, grain colour etc. Мапу of the
accessions were earlier heading, а potentially useful trait to соре with hotter summers. |п the wet conditions in UK many accessions showed high levels ог disease, especially powdery mildew, and there was some yellow rust, а disease rarely seen 1п spring barley due to high levels of resistance in commercial varieties. Yields were lower than the standards, showing the need for breeding to introgress the useful traits observed in this material into new food barley varieties for Europe.

AB - The study, conducted to evaluate the effects of long-term straw management combined with the application of increasing nitrogen rates on the yield of twenty winter wheat varieties, as well as on soil properties, was carried out in a long-term field trial established in 1971. The trial was monitored for twenty growing seasons under rainfed conditions in a typical chernozem zone of the southern part of the Pannonian Plain. The cropping system was a winter wheat-maize-soybean rotation. The ten SN-treatments (combinations of straw management (S) and N-fertilization) were as follows: In the plot (treatment) with straw return (S1), seven variants of nitrogen fertilization (0–180 kg N ha−1) were included, while on the plot without straw return (S0) the variants of N-fertilization were 0, 90 and 150 kg N ha−l. Based on the high relative share in the total sum of squares, variance analysis showed that wheat grain yield (GY) was significantly affected by years, SN-treatments, and their interaction, and they can explain the largest part of the total variance of GY. The results showed that straw return integrated with N fertilization could increase wheat yield to varying degrees over 20 years. On average, for all years, the highest GYs were obtained in the treatment S1 and fertilization with 180 and 150 kg N ha−1. The overall results showed that long-term straw returning significantly increased GY by an average of 8.4 ± 4.5%, with a considerable simultaneous increase in yield stability compared to straw removal. In addition, straw incorporation (SI) significantly increased soil humus, total nitrogen (TN), and soil organic carbon (SOC) contents at a soil depth of 0–30 cm by an average of 4.2, 3.8, and 11.3%, respectively. The results of our study have demonstrated that the long-term practice of straw return, in combination with the application of mineral fertilizers, has the potential to serve as a sustainable soil management strategy that is economically viable and environmentally acceptable. However, additional research is required to investigate its interactive effects on both grain yield and soil productivity.
