AB - Lagenaria siceraria, commonly known as bottle gourd, stands as a versatile member within the Cucurbitaceae family, offering global economic significance and rich cultural history. This comprehensive review explores diverse dimensions of L. siceraria, spanning its botanical characteristics, historical cultivation, and manifold uses across ornamental, culinary, medicinal, and agricultural domains. The historical cultivation segment traces the origins and distribution of L. siceraria, underlining its early domestication and global dispersion. The ornamental section uncovers artistic and cultural dimensions, while the culinary exploration spans traditional recipes in tropical regions to the resurgence of bottle gourd in contemporary European cuisine. The agricultural application as a rootstock is traced from ancient practices to its modern resurgence, contributing to improved tolerance and yield. The cultivation section offers insights into optimal growth conditions, planting practices, and various factors influencing productivity. In addition, the manuscript delves into the genetic diversity of L. siceraria, and the phytochemical composition at various ripening stages is undertaken, emphasizing the impact on fruit characteristics. Furthermore, this work reviews the isolation methods for extracting key compounds from L. siceraria, evaluating the efficiency of different solvents and procedures. The pharmacological activities of the isolated compounds take center stage, with a specific focus on antimicrobial and antidiabetic properties. The review extends its exploration to potential clinical effectiveness and elucidates possible side effects associated with the consumption of bottle gourd juice, providing essential guidelines for safe utilization. In conclusion, this comprehensive review integrates the botanical, agricultural, and medicinal aspects of L. siceraria, offering a thorough understanding of its significance and potential applications across various domains.

U ovoj studiji su ispitivani prinosi sorti: prosa (Biserka i Rumenka), heljde (Novosadska), sirka za zrno (Alba i Gold), sirka metlas a (Prima i Reform), konoplje (Helena i Marina), facelije (NS Priora), uljanog lana (NS Primus i NS Marko) i uljane tikve (Olivija i Olinka).

AB - Boron (B) is released to terrestrial and aquatic environments through both natural and anthropogenic sources. This review describes the current knowledge on B contamination in soil and aquatic environments in relation to its geogenic and anthropogenic sources, biogeochemistry, environmental and human health impacts, remediation approaches, and regulatory practices. The common naturally occurring sources of B include borosilicate minerals, volcanic eruptions, geothermal and groundwater streams, and marine water. Boron is extensively used to manufacture fiberglass, thermal-resistant borosilicate glass and porcelain, cleaning detergents, vitreous enamels, weedicides, fertilizers, and B-based steel for nuclear shields. Anthropogenic sources of B released into the environment include wastewater for irrigation, B fertilizer application, and waste from mining and processing industries. Boron is an essential element for plant nutrition and is taken up mainly as boric acid molecules. Although B deficiency in agricultural soils has been observed, B toxicity can inhibit plant growth in soils under arid and semiarid regions.

AB - Quantitative variations in the sex ratio significantly affect the industrial hemp (fiber hemp) cultivation, since the production is closely related to the reproductive biology of the species. Both dioecious and monoecious varieties are cultivated, but only monoecious ones enable simultaneously mechanized harvesting of stalks and grains. 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (Ethrel®) is a synthetic plant growth regulator that affects sex expression and suppresses stem elongation and plant growth. Thus, four various dosages of Ethrel® were applied as foliar sprays to fiber hemp plants cv. Marina, twice- in stage of flower primordia and, two weeks later in stage of flower formation. The trial was set up in Bački Petrovac at experimental field of the IFVCNS, as completly randomized block design in three replicates. Sex ratio in the control plots was 37.11 to 62.89% in favor of femail plants. Although the ratio significantly changed with increase of applied Ethrel dosages (47.84 to 52.15 at maximal applied Ethrel concentration, 2.5 ml l-1), the total grain yield significantly decreased only if plants were treated with the highest dosage, 748.04 kg ha-1 compared to 836.81 kg ha-1 in control plots. Treated plants had shorter stems (276.78 cm and 233.84 cm in control and plants treated with 2.5 ml l-1 of Ethrel, respectively) with lower fiber content. The fiber content in these stems was by 8% lower (20.10%) compared to the stem fiber content of the control plants (28.25%). The applied Ethrel treatments had no statistically significant effect on the hemp stem diameter.

AB - One-year experiments conducted with one hemp variety were established to determinate the cultivation practices (growth density and pinching) which could be used to optimize the technological process of hemp varieties production for different purposes. The results showed that reduced crop density and pinching result in development of shorter plants. In denser non-pinched crops, the stem is over 180 cm high, while the plants start branching in the upper 1/4-1/5 part. In the non-pinched treatment with a larger area available for individual plants, as well as in the pinched treatments, more productive branches of less thickness develop in the lower parts. The non-pinched treatments generally produce higher stem and fiber yields, which increase when crop density is reduced. The obtained results can serve as a basis for determining certain treatments during the evaluation of production technology for different varieties of hemp intended for specific purposes.

AB - In order to define the most optimal technique for field trials that would allow broader exploration of the interaction of G x E x M (G - genotype, E - environmental conditions, M - crop management) in hemp seed production, one-year trials were set up with the typically dioecious hemp variety Marina. The trials included three different crop densities (20, 150, and 300 plants m2?) and the control unpinched variant which was compared with the apical bud removal treatment (pinching) at a plant height of 60 cm. The results showed that with pinching in all crop densities, a decrease in plant height and an increase in seed yield are achieved. The highest seed yields of over 1200 kg ha were achieved in the pinched crop with 20 and 150 plants m 2, which can be considered the optimal method for determining the yield potential of the genotype. The obtained results of the preliminary research will serve as a basis for recommendations for commercial hemp seeds production, as well as for defining the method for testing the wider germplasm in the hemp breeding programs.

AB - This study aimed to compare weed flora in conventionally and organically grown medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs): basil, pot marigold, dill, and peppermint; in terms of weed composition and weed abundance. A total of 28 weed species (25 and 15 species in conventional and organic crops, respectively) were identified. The presence and abundance of certain weed species were affected by MAP species and farming system. Higher weed diversity and weediness, and lower floristic similarity were found in conventionally grown crops. Also, the analysed MAPs differed in weediness by individual weed species. Correspondence analysis pointed to conventional and organic MAPs with the most frequent and most abundant weed species. Setaria pumila and Portulaca oleracea were the most frequent species in conventional; and Amaranthus retroflexus, Datura stramonium, and Sorghum halepense in organic crops. In both conventional and organic farming systems, therophytes were the most dominant life forms indicating a strong anthropogenic influence. The results should contribute to establishing weed control measures that are adequate for the two farming systems.

AB - Nepeta cataria, also known as catnip or catmint, is the most widespread and intensively
studied species. The name catmint is derived from the strong attraction most cats have towards this
species. Because of this, it is often used in pet toy industry as a safe attractant for cats. The main
compounds responsible for this reaction in cats are nepetalactones. However, N. cataria var.
citriodora or lemon catnip, an aromatic herb with a lemony-mint flavor, resembles true catnip, but is
not attractive to cats. This variety is a good source for industrial production of citral and an attractive
raw material for food industry and cooking; it is used as a dry spicy mixture for dessert dishes, in
manufacturing of cheese, sausages, alcoholic beverages (liqueurs and vermouth) and soft drinks,
vegetable and fruit canned food. N. cataria is cultivated for ornamental purposes, and because of the
long flowering duration and large production of pollen and nectar it is very suitable for beekeeping.
According to scientific reports, N. cataria possess antioxidant, hepatoprotective and antidiabetic
activities, as well as sedative, antidepressant, spasmolytic, anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory
activities. Experiments show that this plant influences sexual activity, and expresses anticancer
properties. Antimicrobial activity against a number of bacteria is also noted, as well as repellent and
insecticidal properties. Nematodidal and allelopathic effects are also noted.

Visoke (> 30°C) i vrlo visoke (> 35°C) temperature vazduha u periodu zametanja i sazrevanja plodova nepovoljno utiču na sadržaj karotenoida u plodu.
AB - The nutritional composition and organoleptic properties of the fruit areof great importance in the market placement of butternut squash. Therefore, in addition to the yield, the quality parameters should be takeninto account when selecting parents for crosses. The paper analyzes thecontent of dry matter, sugar and carotenoids in the flesh of fruits of 11genotypes of butternut squash, grown during three consecutive seasons(2016, 2017, 2018). Significant differences were found among genotypesand seasons in terms of all examined parameters. The highest values ofall parameters were determined for genotype B2208, and the lowest forMo 8-15. High (> 30 °C) and very high (> 35 °C) air temperatures duringfruit set and ripening adversely affect the carotenoid content of the fruit. The sugar content in the warmer seasons (2017, 2018) is higher comparedto the 2016 season, when temperatures were close to multi-year averagesand maximum daily temperatures did not exceed 35 °C. Genotype B2208is a candidate for involvement in the breeding program aimed to improvethe butternut squash quality.

Visoke (> 30°C) i vrlo visoke (> 35°C) temperature vazduha u periodu zametanja i sazrevanja plodova nepovoljno utiču na sadržaj karotenoida u plodu. AB - Dracocephalum moldavica L., Nepeta cataria L. var. citriodora (Becker), and Satureja montana L. (Lamiaceae family, Nepetoidae subfamily) are medicinal and aromatic plants, widely used in medicine, pharmaceutical, and food industries. This investigation aimed to estimate dry herb yield obtained from the harvested aerial plant parts of the selected species. The second aim was to study relationships among parameters related to fresh and dry plant weight. Fresh weight decreased after drying: 3.7-, 2.9- and 2.8- times for D. moldavica, N. cataria var. citriodora and S. montana, respectively. These results show that the drying index points to kg of fresh plant material required to obtain 1 kg of dry herb. Moisture content was 8.0-, 9.0- and 5.9- fold higher in fresh plant material compared to dry D. moldavica, N. cataria var. citriodora and S. montana, respectively; however variation for all tested parameters indicate uniform moisture content in plants which vary in weight. These observations could help growers to estimate dry herb yields of the investigated plant species immediately after harvest.

AB - High nutrition value, amount of bioactive compounds and non-demanding cultivation make pumpkin pulp and its products a great and valuable plant food candidate in human nutrition and medical purpose. Pumpkins are characterized by the presence of carotenoids as the most dominant and studied compounds. This plant also contains phenolics that can contribute to biological activity. Consumption of food that is rich in both, carotenoids and phenolics has been correlated with beneficial physiological and immunological effects which results in lower risk of various diseases. In this study, pumpkin pulp derived from 20 different varieties of pumkins grown at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia were analysed for their polyphenol and carotenoid content. These varieties belong to two basic species: Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata. Phenolic content of pumpkins was determined by the LC-MS/MS technique. The most present phenols were quinic acid (QA), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) and amentoflavone (AF). The highest content of phenolics was found in Mo 29-1 (QA – 28.74 ng/mg; PHBA – 162.39 ng/mg; AF – 40.08 ng/mg), Max 1 (QA – 36.48 ng/mg; PHBA – 23.21 ng/mg; AF – 100.18 ng/mg) and MAX 105 (QA – 33.71 ng/mg; PHBA – 65.18 ng/mg; AF – 57.37 ng/mg). The carotenoid composition was determined by HPLC-DAD technique. In C. moschata α-carotene was the most dominant carotenoid. The highest content of α-carotene was found in Mo 39 (0.659 mg/g) thran β-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin were dominant carotenoifd in Mo 39 (0.499 mg/g), Mo 31 (0.004 mg/g) and Mo 31 (0.004 mg/g), respectively. In C. maxima β-carotene was the main carotenoid. The highest content of β-carotene was found in Max 118-2 (0.548 mg/g) and the greatest amount of α-carotene lutein and zeaxanthin was found in Max 113 (0.014 mg/g), Max 65-1 (0.038 mg/g) and Max 65-1 (0.407 mg/g), respectively. The above results indicate that poorly studied pumpkin pulp is a great source of bioactive compounds can find a signifacant place in food industry and could have important effect on selection in plant breeding.

AB - In addition to stable and high fruit yields, traits related to nutritional quality play a significant role in placing pumpkins on the market. The paper analyzes traits related to nutritional quality (fruit flesh dry weight, total sugars and carotenoids content, and pH) together with traits of agronomic importance (number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, and yield per plant) in seven pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima Duch.) accessions, grown at the same locality (Bački Petrovac) during three consecutive seasons (2016, 2017, and 2018). We observed significant differences among the accessions regards all the investigated traits, except for pH. Adverse effects of the environmental factors, primarily those related to high and extremely high air temperatures, were observed for total carotenoids and sugars content, and for fruit weight and yield. Accessions B2398 and A2620-2 had the best values of the examined parameters and therefore should be used for breeding pumpkins of high yield and quality.

AB - The aim of the study was to examine the effect of osmotic stress (saltand drought stress) on growth and dry matter content in cauliflower linesgrown in vitro. Two selected cauliflower lines were exposed in vitro tosalt stress and drought by culturing on MS medium with 0, 100, 200, 300and 400 mM NaCl and resp. by culturing on MS medium with 0, 5, 10,15 and 20% PEG. The fresh weight and the dry matter content weremeasured at the beginning and after 8 days of treatment. Both stresses ledto a reduction in the growth and increase in dry matter content, but thelines reacted differently to individual stressors and their concentrations. The Kf-L1 line responded better to lower NaCl concentrations, on amedium with 300 mM NaCl both lines showed a similar increase, but at ahigher concentration of 400 mM the Kf-L1 line showed significantlylower tolerance to increased salinity compared to the Kf-L2line. Obtainedresultsindicate differences between the tested lines in tolerance to salt anddrought stress, which makes this method effective in testing and selectingmore tolerant lines of cauliflower and Brassica vegetables.

AB - The genus Viburnum (Adoxaceae, Dipsacales) is of scientific interest due to the chemical components and diverse biological activities found across species of the genus, which includes more than 230 species of evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous shrubs and small trees. Although frequently used as an ornament, the Viburnum species show biological properties with health-promoting effects. Fruits, flowers, and barks of certain species are used for pharmaceutical purposes or as cooking ingredients, hence containing biochemical compounds with health-promoting activity such are carotenoids, polyphenols, and flavonoids. However, its taxonomical determination is difficult, due to its wide distribution and frequent hybridizations; therefore, an objective classification would allow us to understand its biological activity based on its phytochemical components. More than sixty phytochemical compounds have been reported, where vibsanin-type diterpenes and their derivatives are the most prevalent. Leaves and twigs of V. dilatatum contain the largest number of phytochemicals among the genus. Through preclinical evidence, this study provides insight regarding antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and anticancer activities of genus Viburnum.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the increasing polyethylene glycol - PEG concentrations (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, and 30.0%) on germination and early seedling growth of grain sorghum genotypes NS Al74 x Re37/07 and NS Gold. The trial included distilled water as control where no significant differences between genotypes were observed for any of the examined parameters. The drought treatments starting from 10.0% PEG decreased germination energy and percentage, and the most discriminative treatment was 17.5%. The shoot growth parameters provided better differentiating between the genotypes than those of root growth. The discriminative treatments were in the range of 7.5-15.0% PEG. NS Al74 x Re37/07 was less affected by the PEG-imposed drought than NS Gold; however the comprehensive field study would be required to confirm the presumable drought tolerance of the hybrid.

AB - Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) was one of the earliest domesticated plant species. Biological classification (taxonomy or systematization) manifests evolutional relationships between taxons according to trait similarities. When it comes to taxonomy, hemp is one of the most controversial plant species due to significant effects of environmental conditions on hemp phenology and expression of quantitative traits as well as different levels of gender expression observed in hemp plants. Controversial taxonomy of hemp has gone through several phases throughout history. The attitude on the number of species within the genus Cannabis and the criteria used in taxonomic units division were under dispute. Initially focused on morphological characteristics and geographical origin, the approach was greatly amended by the development of molecular and biochemical techniques. The main cause of taxonomic uncertainties is the inbreeding ability of all wild Cannabis populations, resulting in continual variability of quantitative traits. The aim of the paper is to review the history of Cannabis classification including different approaches to this scientific issue.

AB - Continental inland saline wetlands are among the most endangered habitats in Europe. In the Danube-Tisza-Danube canal network (Serbia, Southeastern Europe), which is one of the largest canal networks on the continent, the rare and endangered inland saline wetland Bolboschoenus maritimus community (BMC) has been found at only two locations. Two vegetation types of the community have been identified: (i) with Bolboschoenus maritimus and Marsilea quadrifolia (BMC-M) dominance and (ii) with Bolboschoenus maritimus and Butomus umbellatus (BMC-B) dominance. The aim of the study was to compare the habitats of the ascertained vegetation types in terms of 55 water and soil properties that influence their development, floristic composition and differentiation. The main properties influencing the community development and differentiation were water alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand, CO32-, water pH, soil conductivity, K+ and Ca2+ content in the soil. Both vegetation types grow in non-saline, slightly alkaline, nutrient-rich habitats with eutrophic water. When compared to BMC-B, BMC-M was found on heavy clay soils with higher conductivity, CaCO3, humus, nutrients, macroelements, and Na+ content, in shallower water with higher suspended solids and oxygen content, lower contents of nutrients, dissolved salts, HCO3-, macroelements, conductivity, and alkalinity. The study provides new data on the BMC distribution in this part of Europe and the first detailed information on its habitat conditions. Thirty-one species from the European Red List of Threatened Species were found in the stands. These results may be useful when deciding on the appropriate preservation measures aimed to rehabilitate other wetland habitats and biodiversity.

AB - Despite numerous positive effects on the environment, increased demands, intense research, and adequate public attention, crops grown according to the principles of organic production still occupy considerably small areas. It is difficult for certified producers to decide to expand the production of certified organic vegetables. One of the reasons is the insufficiently developed growing technology of different vegetable species in accordance with the law and regulations on organic production. Intercropping, growing of subsequent crops, and application of microbiological fertilizers are considered as the most useful techniques for yield increases in sustainable growing practices. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibilities for enhancing root yield of beetroot and radish, when grown as second crops in an organic double-cropping production system. The effects of intercropping and applying microbial fertilizers on the vegetable root weights were assessed. Intercropping was with green beans, implemented by replacement series method. Two microbial fertilizers were applied, one containing selected strains of Bacillus megatherium, B. licheniformis, B. suptilis, Azotobacter chrocoocum, A. vinelandi and Derxia sp. (M1), and other with Bacillus subtilis, Azotobacter sp., Penicillium oxalicum and Fusarium sp. (M2). Intercropping and microbial fertilizers contributed to the root weight increase. The highest root weights were noted for the intercropped plants treated with M1 (beetroot, 151.8 g) and M2 (radish, 351.0 g), which was 23.5% and 15.5% higher than in the sole crop unfertilized control. The results imply combining intercropping and the appropriate microbial fertilizers as an effective strategy for increasing yields of organically grown beetroot and radish.

AB - Phenotypic diversity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) landraces and reference cultivars were evaluated based on variability of twelve traits, chosen according to international descriptor list. Landraces were collected form 53 locations in Republic of Serbia. Origin and dissemination of local common bean germplasm was assessed based on variation of phaseolin types. Phaseolin analysis showed that landraces of both Mesoamerican and Andean origin are grown in Serbia, with higher frequency of Andean types. Ratio of three phaseolin types found in studied common bean germplasm suggested its introduction in Serbia from northern borders. Shannon-Weaver index was used as indicator of phenotypic diversity, showing high diversity level among studied germplasm. HOMALS analysis was performed in order to determine discriminative power of traits and structure of studied germplasm. Seed and flower traits, as well as growth habit type had highest, opposed to phaseolin type with lowest discriminative power among genotypes. Genotypes were phenotypically individualized and classified in five homogenous groups according to their profiles, displaying differentiation on the gene pool level, as well.

Genotypes were phenotypically individualized and classified in five homogenous groups according to their profiles, displaying differentiation on the gene pool level, as well.",

AB - Considering the increasing incidence of allergy symptoms in Europe in the past decades, it is useful to obtain precise ecological and biological data regarding the allergenic plants. This study was conducted in order to assess habitat conditions allowing the development of allergenic plants along the Danube-Tisza-Danube canal network (Banat region, Serbia). In this regard, the distribution of these plants and the relationships among their eco-biological characteristics were studied. The results represent the one step further in the assessment of the habitat conditions allowing the development of allergenic plants in the study area. Twenty four allergenic plants were found, with a predominance of wetland plants (37.50%) and geophytes (41.67%). Correlation and PCA analyses determined that the flowering time of allergenic plants is correlated with the ecological group, life form and habitat conditions (aeration, pH, humus content, moisture, and continentality). The unfavorable periods for allergy sufferers are early spring and summer. Pollen-allergenic forest phanerophytes flowered early, had the shortest flowering period, and inhabited neutral to alkaline soil with less humus content, compared to the wetland and weed-ruderal allergenic plants. Habitat moisture reduced soil aeration and modified the effects of the continental climate, favoring the development of numerous allergenic species along the canals. Most of the identified allergenic species are invasive in Europe. Moreover, these species are frequently grown in urban green areas. Therefore, the avoidance of excessive use of these allergenic species in urban ecosystems may provide healthier environments for allergy sufferers and contribute to the preservation of the native flora biodiversity.

AB - Malvaceae family is typical from the Mediterranean region, contains 240 genera and more than 4,200 species. They are most commonly used as ornamental plants, although they can also be conceived as a food resource and remedy for various diseases, such as digestive, respiratory, genitourinary, throat infections, and skeletal and skin disorders, as also injuries where they are profoundly applied for skin care and as antiseptic and demulcent. They also possess diuretic, lenitive, spasmolytic, and laxative effects, besides to be used as antidiarrheal. Thus, the present review provides in-depth data on Malva spp. potential applications and phytochemical composition for food and pharmaceutical industries. Habitat and cultivation conditions and the clinical reports related to its biological effects are also emphasized. Malva spp. possess a wide variety of chemical constituents (such as polysaccharides, coumarins, flavonoids, polyphenols, vitamins, terpenes, and tannins) found in different plant organs, especially in leaves and flowers, connected to their biological activity. In general, Malva spp. have rather moderate antimicrobial activity, high antiinflammatory and wound healing activities, strong antioxidant activity, and anticancer properties. Results from in vitro and in vivo experiments encourage more in-depth studies, namely clinical trials, towards to improve knowledge on the use of Malva spp. for the treatment of various health conditions in humans.
