AB - The sustainable production of agricultural commodities, such as vegetable proteins and oils, is currently facing the challenge of developing new cropping strategies more e fficient in terms of water, nutrients, and land, while being able to increase the supply of domestic feedstocks. Double cropping of camelina (Camelina sativa L.), sown in the autumn, with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) can be proposed as a sustainable way to produce in the same growing season and land, multiple feedstocks for both energy, feed and food uses. A preliminary trial was conducted in Novi Sad (Serbia) during the 2018/19 growing season to test: yield performance, oil content and 1000 seed mass of two early sunflower hybrids (NS Dukat and NS H 7749) sown just after the harvest of two camelina varieties (NS Slatka and NS Zlatka which average yield was 920 kg/ha). Sunflower hybrids were also grown in the monocropping system as control. Both sunflower hybrids had higher seed yields in the monocropping system (+24%), but when considering the total yield of the two crops in the double cropping seed yield resulted slightly higher (+1-3%) than that of sunflower in the monocropping system. Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

AB - In this study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of digital image analysis (DIA) as a substitute for standard analysis (SA) in assessing corn ear traits in agrotechnical field trials. Accurate and timely prediction of corn yield through corn ear traits can lead to precise agricultural management recommendations for the improvement of production. Four replications with 10 plots each were subjected to different fertilization regimes and analyzed using DIA and SA to determine the kernel number per ear (KN), ear length (EL), and ear diameter (ED). For both methods, the results showed that only nitrogen doses had a significant effect on the examined corn ear traits, and the correlation matrix revealed a strong and significant relationship between yield and corn ear traits. The post-hoc test showed no discrepancy in cases between the two methods for KN and EL, with a 6.7% discrepancy for ED. For both methods, a linear plateau was the best fit for KN and EL with increasing nitrogen doses, whereas a quadratic plateau was the best fit for ED. The regression equations for both methods provided similar recommendations regarding nitrogen requirements. The findings suggest that DIA can be used as a substitute for SA of corn ear traits obtained from different fertilization variants and can provide nitrogen fertilization recommendations for optimal corn yields.

AB - Soil compaction is important cause of its degradation that leads to decreased water and nutrient accessibility to plants. As a consequence, root growth is reduced, resulting in yield decrease. Cover crops and intercrops can have positive effects on soil compaction, but cropping management adaption is required. In sunflower production soil compaction is not frequently analyzed, but under the current and projected changes of climate more attention must be given to this problem. Therefore, the aim of this research was to assess the effect of intercropping of sunflower and legumes on soil compaction. Three different NS sunflower hybrids were intercropped with common vetch, red clover or alfalfa, whereas sole cropping of sunflower was control. Trial was set up at Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Rimski Šančevi, Serbia. Soil compaction was analyzed based on resistance to penetration of the penetrologger cone into the soil, and the soil water content (Vol%). Penetration resistance was determined using an Eijkelkamp Penetrologger up to 80 cm, and data processing was done with Penetroviewer 6.03 software. The lowest percentage of soil moisture, at depth up to 20 cm, was measured in alfalfa and sunflower intercrop (21.7%), and the highest on the control plot (26.8%), as a result of absence of intercropping system.

AB - Priming of legume seeds before sowing was performed by Roman farmers in order to increase the germination rate and
synchronize germination, as reported by the Roman naturalist Gaius Plinius Secundus. Several centuries later, this technique is
still used for a wide range of species. However, in order for this measure to be used successfully in production, it is necessary to
find a solution for the successful storage of primed seeds. The storage potential of primed soybean seeds was determined by a
temperature of 25 °C during the period of 90 days. Soybean seeds were primed with KNO3 (1%), AsA (100 mg L-1) and KCl (1%)
solutions, and then stored in natron paper bags, and their quality was tested every 15 days. The results showed that a reduction
in the quality of primed seeds was considerably faster than in non-primed seeds. Primed soybean seeds were successfully stored
at a temperature of 25 °C for 60 days after priming, and then a significant reduction in their quality occurred. One of the causes of
seed quality reduction was an increase in MDA content, especially after 75 and 90 days of storage. Also, free proline concentration
was reduced while the content of vitamin C increased after 15 days primarily in seeds primed in AsA and KCl solutions, and
decreased after 45 days.

AB - In order to assess the impact of the sowing date on the oil content and oil yield in NS sunflower hybrids, the experiment was carried out in 2020 at the locality Rimski šančevi. Three NS hybrids (NS Sanol, NS H 7749, NS Kiril) were tested. They were sown in eight sowing dates starting from March 20th with an interval of 10 days (R1 20.03., R2 01.04., R3 10.04., R4 20.04., R5 01.05., R6 10.05., R7 20.05., R8 01.06.). There were significant differences in oil content and oil yield between the examined hybrids, as well as between sowing dates. The sowing date (over 50%), had the greatest influence on the oil content and oil yield followed by the hybrid × sowing date interaction and the least influence was shown by the hybrid. All sources of variation were highly significant for both examined traits. The average oil content for all hybrids and sowing dates was 44.88%, and for oil yield 1.83 t/ha. The highest average oil content showed the hybrid NS Sanol (45.98), and the average oil yield was stated by NS Kiril (2.01 t/ha). The sowing dates R1, R2, R4 and R5 had the highest mean values for oil content. Oil yield was the highest in the two sowing dates in R4 (2.22 t/ha) and R5 (2.15 t/ha). The variability of the oil content was 1.8% and of the oil yield 12.1%.

uljem (40-48%) i proteinima (18-23%).

AB - Fatty acid composition is the main determinant of oil quality. Genotype (G), environment (E) and interaction (G × E) determine oil fatty acid composition. Some environmental factors are climate, soil structure, and crop management (crop rotation, sowing date, crop density, etc.). This research was conducted to evaluate changes in the fatty acid composition in sunflower hybrids depending on genotype and different crop densities. Five confectionery hybrids (NS Goliat, NS Slatki, NS Gricko, Vranac, Cepko) and one for birds feeding (NSH-6485) were sown in six crop densities from 20000-70000 plants per hectare (increasing step of 10000) in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Fatty acid composition was determined by gas chromatography using the Konik HRGC 4000 system.

AB - The aim of the research was to test the effect of foliar-applied solutions of ascorbic acid (AsA), glycine betaine (GB), salicylic acid (SA) and water as a second control on the yield and seed germination of the soybean (Glycine hispida (Moench) Maxim.) cultivar 'Sava' as well as their influence on the content of N, P, K and Ca in soybean seeds, and to estimate the intensity of lipid peroxidation and free proline content in soybean seedlings. The plants were treated with the solutions twice. The 1st spray treatment was done at growth stage 6: flowering (main shoot), when first flowers opened (sporadically in population), and the 2nd spray treatment was done at growth stage 7: development of fruits and seeds, when the first pod had reached final length of 15-20 mm. Foliar application of the solutions had a significant impact on seed yield and seed germination in both years of the experiment. In a favourable year 2016, treatments with ascorbic acid, glycine betaine and salicylic acid solution significantly increased seed yield by 6.21-9.67%. However, in an unfavourable year 2017, the effect was significantly greater with the application of water (yield increase 6.48%), while the application of glycine betaine solution even reduced the seed yield. In a favourable year 2016, treatments with ascorbic acid and salicylic acid solution significantly increased seed germination by 7% and 8%, respectively. In an unfavourable year 2017, also only ascorbic acid and salicylic acid significantly increased seed germination by 11% and 9%, respectively. However, when using cold test, when the seed was exposed to a low temperature of 10 degrees C for 7 days and then placed under optimal seed germination conditions for 4 days, ascorbic acid and glycine betaine solution reduced seed germination in both experimental years. Therefore, further research is needed on the methods designed to increase seed germination of soybean, both in favourable and adverse conditions in Serbia.

AB - The aim of the paper was to determine the influence of cover crops (CC) and cultivated crops in the subsequent sowing period (maize, soybean and sudan grass) on the physical properties of the soil, and above all on the soil compaction.Research was carried out at the Rimski Šančevi experimental station. Type of soil - chernozem. The winter CC consisted of the combined intercrops: winter pea (Pisum sativum ssp. Arvense L.) + triticale ((×Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus) (PT) and single-species CC winter pea (P)and control (without CC). Plowing of CC and control plots was carried out in the last week of May 2018, and the sowing of maize, soybean and sudan grass was carried out in early June. Soil compaction was analyzed on the basis of collected data on the resistance of cone penetration into the soil and the immediate moisture content of the soil. The penetration resistance of the cone into the soil was determined using an electric penetrologger Eijkelkamp Penetrologger. Measurement of the resistance was carried out to a depth of 80 cm and expressed in MPa. Based on the conducted research, the smallest percentage content of soil moisture at depths of up to 20 cm was determined for maize varieties (PT) of 10.5% vol.and the highest on the control plot (without CC) (25.7% vol.), as a consequence of the absence of the CC, but also the dense structure of Sudan grass and reduced evaporation from the production area. The lowest Cone index (CI) was measured on a plot also with sudan grass, on the soil preceded by the cultivation of the winter pea as cover crop ( 2,3), while the highest index (3,6) was measured in the soybean crop on variants (PT). The specific resistance to penetration of the cone was varied both on varieties of inter CC (PT), single CC (P) and control, as well as in different cultivated species in the subsequent sowing period. The highest value of the specific resistance in the depth 0-20 cm was found in soybean (PT) 2.76 MPa, and also increased compation in the same crop in the layer (20-40 cm). On the basis of the obtained values it can be concluded that maize least affects soil compaction, unlike soybean, while in relation to the cover crops it is determined that the winter pea has the least impact on soil compaction.

AB - The variability of protein content in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) in addition to genetic factors, is greatly influenced by many environmental factors as location, year, temperature. Proper field practices as crop rotation, sowing density, and sowing date can also influence oil and protein content in rapeseed. This study was initiated to determine the impact of cultivar, production year and row spacing (sowing density) on protein content in three cultivars of winter rapeseed grown in Serbia, during two vegetation periods. Experimental factors included three winter rapeseed cultivars (Banaćanka, Slavica and NS-H-R-1) sown in five row spacings of 16 cm (RS1, 25 plants/m2), 10 cm (RS2, 40 plants/m2), 8 cm (RS3, 50 plants/m2), 6 cm (RS4, 67 plants/m2) and 5 cm (RS5, 80 plants/m2). The rows were 25 cm apart. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare means of treatments using STATISTICA 7.0 software. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) based on results of the two-year average showed that the mean squares for main effects year (Y) and cultivar (C) were highly significant (**P < 0.01), but protein content was not significantly affected by row spacing (RS).

AB - Winter oilseed rape (WOSR) production is dependent on weather conditions, but is also characterized by low nitrogen (N) use efficiency. The objectives of this study were to: (i) evaluate sources of variability for the seed yield and oil content of four rapeseed cultivars under the influence of three sowing dates (SD trial) and five nitrogen dosages (N trial) during four growing seasons; (ii) understand year-related interactions and the effect of climatic variables in different growth stages; and (iii) assess the presence of interactions cultivar by year (C x Y) and treatment by year (T x Y). Six climatic factors were observed, during germination, overwintering, budding, flowering and ripening. The mixed effect split-plot analysis of variance was used, as well as factorial regression models. The C x Y interaction was the most important for the oil content in both trials. The precipitation at budding stage (75.8%), relative air humidity at overwintering (63.3%) and flowering stage (53.0%) accounted for the highest proportion of T x Y interaction for the seed yield, as well as precipitation at flowering (92.0%) and ripening (85.0%) for the oil content. Water availability was the main determinant of the seed yield and/or oil content accompanied with cooler temperatures during the seed development. The study successfully dissected the effect of year-related climatic variables on the agronomical traits in winter rapeseed. Based on this, appropriate agronomic practices can be applied at specific growing stages to ensure a high seed and oil yield.

AB - The mass of the plants depends on assimilates, which are formed in the process of photosynthesis and their amount varies depending of different factors. In this study the influence of seed size on the sunflower plant dry matter content at the bud stage was examined. Natural seeds of sunflower hybrid Oliva were separated into six grades. First, seeds were separated in two grades according to the dimensions, and then seed separation according to the specific weight within these grades was carried out. The field experiment during two growing seasons was carried out at two localities. The accumulation of dry matter was observed in bud stage. The individual plant organs were analyzed – stems, leaves, petioles and buds. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA for a split-slit-plot model design. The dry matter content in the plant organs was significantly influenced by weather conditions in experimental years, localities, as well as the seed grades.

AB - This investigation was undertaken in order to determine the variability of oil and protein content in winter rapeseed cultivars affected by seeding date. Four cultivars (Banacanka, Slavica, Express, Valesca) were sown at six seeding dates (SD1-21 August, SD2-31 August, SD3-10 September, SD4-21 September, SD5-1 October, SD6-9 October) in four replications across two cropping seasons. The trial was arranged as a randomized complete block design. The effect of year, cultivar, and seeding date were highly significant for oil and protein content. Increased oil content in the second year (2010/2011) was related to weather conditions which were favorable for rapeseed. However, protein content was significantly higher in the first year (2009/2010). Oil content ranged between 41.19% (Valesca) and 42.69% ( Express). Significantly lowest oil content across seeding dates was found in SD6 (40.67%) and highest in SD4 (41.86%) and SD1 (41.61%). Valesca showed significantly highest mean protein content (21.54%). Protein content was highest in SD6 (20.18%). Oil content decreased with delayed seeding. Between oil and protein content highly significant negative correlation (r = -0.730) was stated. Seeding date showed a significant effect on oil and protein content in rapeseed. Cultivar Express and SD4 can be pointed out, based on the achieved oil content, and cultivar Valesca for high protein content. Study results may be helpful in recommending optimal rapeseed seeding date in the region.

AB - The seed size is one of the seed quality components which affect the performance of the crop. In order to equalize the quality, the seeds are processed and packed by grade where seeds are separate by size and specific weight. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of seed processing and grading on sunflower plant height at bud stage. The field experiment was carried out during the growing seasons of 2010 and 2011, with six seed grade of hybrid Sremac at the experimental fields of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops at Rimski šančevi and Zrenjanin Agricultural Advisory Services. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA for a split-split-plot design. Based on obtained results it can be concluded that the effect of all three observed factors - locality, growing seasons and seed grade on sunflower plant height at bud stage was statistically highly significant as well as interaction year x locality, while other interactions did not show statistical significance. Also, significant differences were observed between bigger and smaller grades, where the plant height proportionally decreased with seed size.

AB - Head diameter is very important trait in the sunflower seed yield structure. The size of head diameter influences the number of flowers and seeds per head which directly influence the seed yield per plant. In order to evaluate the effect of sowing date on head diameter, 3 sunflower hybrids, sown in 4 sowing dates during three growing seasons, were carried out. Head diameter was evaluated in the stage of flowering and physiological maturity. Head diameter at the stage of flowering was largely influenced by the year (Y) of investigation (46.6%), although other sources of variation (H-hybrid, SD-sowing date) showed also significance, except interaction H × SD. The largest head diameter is manifested in the hybrid Pobednik (11.9 cm) in the three-year average. In SD4 (20th of May) head diameter had the highest value (11.8 cm). In physiological maturity head diameter varied significantly depending on the sowing date (18.6%). Years, as well as hybrids had no significant influence on this trait. All interactions (Y × SD, H × SD, Y × H × SD), except year × hybrid (Y × H), were highly significant.

abstract = "Head diameter is very important trait in the sunflower seed yield structure. All interactions (Y × SD, H × SD, Y × H × SD), except year × hybrid (Y × H), were highly significant.",

AB - Head size contributes substantially to seed yield of sunflower because it influences both number of seeds per head, and seed size. The aim of this field study was to determine the variability of head diameter in sunflower hybrids depending on planting date across three cropping seasons. Three hybrids (Miro, Rimi, Pobednik) were sown at four planting dates (PD1 - 20th of March, PD2 - 10th of April, PD3 - 30th of April, PD4 - 20th of May). Head diameter was analysed in the stage of flowering and physiological maturity. The trial was arranged as Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the effect of year, hybrid, planting date and most interactions were highly significant for head diameter in the flowering stage. In the stage of physiological maturity head diameter varied significantly depending only on the planting date. Also, all interactions, except year x hybrid (Y x H), were highly significant. Planting date had significant influence on head diameter in the stage of flowering and physiological maturity in sunflower. With later sowing head diameter increased, so that significantly highest head diameter across planting dates was found in PD4 (11.8 cm in flowering stage, and 22.6 cm at the stage of physiological maturity). Study results may be helpful in the recommendation for optimal planting date in sunflower.

AB - The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of stand density on seed yield and protein content in sunflower hybrids. The field experiment was carried out at Rimski Šančevi location. Six NS sunflower hybrids were examined. Five hybrids are confectionery (NS Goliat, NS Slatki, NS Gricko, Vranac and Cepko), and one is used for bird food (NS-H-6485). The trial was arranged as randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. Sowing was done with six different densities (from 20,000 to 70,000 plants per hectare, with an increment of 10,000 plants per hectare). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the effect of hybrid, stand density and hybrid × stand density interaction were highly significant for seed yield and protein content. The highest seed yield, on the basis of average for all densities, was found in NS-H-6485 (4.77 t ha-1) and in NS Gricko (4.43 t ha-1). Average seed yield of hybrids significantly increased up to 50,000 plants per ha-1, when it reached the value of 4.50 t ha-1, and then decreased. Significantly higher protein content, taking into account all stand densities, showed hybrid Cepko (16.94%). Protein content, above the overall average value, was achieved in hybrid Vranac (16.11%). The highest protein content in the average for all six hybrids was at the lowest stand density (20,000 plants per ha-1), and then decreased up to higher densities. The results showed that stand density had significant effect on seed yield and protein content in sunflower hybrids.

AB - In addition to the origin, history of breeding, geographical distribution and economic importance of wheat, it is also necessary to get acquainted with its phenology and basic biological requirements in order to develop optimal production technology. The realization of biological potential of wheat depends of a numerous agro-ecological factors and in order to achieve high yields and stable production it is crucial to determine its relation to agro-ecological factors, especially at certain stages of growth and development. This is an important prerequisite for successful production of wheat, in terms of proper planning and determination of technological operations and directions of breeding, as well as for realistic yield forecasting. In this paper, special emphasis is on agro-climatic factors in wheat production e.g. heat and water requirements as well as its reaction to temperature extremes and relation with the soil and air drought.

AB - The aim of this paper was to examine the influence of biostimulators, with or without the use of fungicides, on seed quality parameters and early growth of sunflower seedling. Testing was conducted at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad on cytoplasmic male sterile sunflower line HA-26-PR. The experiment included six treatments: Slavol S (25%), Slavol S (25%) + fungicide (a.m. metalaxyl-M), Bioplant Flora (2%), Bioplant Flora (2%) + fungicide (a.m. metalaxyl-M), Slavol S (25%) + Bioplant Flora (2%), Slavol S (25%) + Bioplant Flora (2%) + fungicide (a. m. metalaxyl-M) and control. Results of the research showed that treating the seed with biostimulators prior to sowing has a significant influence on seed germination parameters and early growth of sunflower seedling. The individual application of fertilizers, with or without the use of fungicide, gave a positive effect, while their combination led to a negative effect. The individual application of fertilizers, with or without combination with fungicide, may increase germination energy by 5%, germinability by 6%, but may also reduce the time of seed germination. Likewise, their use has a positive effect on early growth of sunflower seedling.
U ogled je bilo uključeno šest tretmana: Slavol S (25%), Slavol S (25%) + fungicid (a.m. metalaksil-m), Bioplant Flora (2%), Bioplant Flora (2%) + fungicid (a.m. metalaksil-m), Slavol S (25%) + Bioplant Flora (2%), Slavol S (25%) + Bioplant Flora (2%) + fungicid (a. m. metalaksil-m) i kontrola.

U ogled je bilo uključeno šest tretmana: Slavol S (25%), Slavol S (25%) + fungicid (a.m. metalaksil-m), Bioplant Flora (2%), Bioplant Flora (2%) + fungicid (a.m. metalaksil-m), Slavol S (25%) + Bioplant Flora (2%), Slavol S (25%) + Bioplant Flora (2%) + fungicid (a. m. metalaksil-m) i kontrola.

AB - The aim of this paper was to examine the effects of biostimulators on root and shoot length of sunflower seedling deriving from seeds treated with biostimulators prior to sowing. Experiment was conducted at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops on five cytoplasmic male sterile lines: OCMS: - 98 (L1), HA-NS-26 (L2), PH-BC2-74 (L3), VL-A-8 (L4), and HA-26-PR (L5). The seed was produced in the period from 2010 to 2012. Two seed variants were tested - non-treated seed and seed which was prior to application of biostimulators treated with metalaxyl-m. Prior to sowing, seed was treated with commercial preparations Slavol S, Bioplant Flora and the combination of the two. Results of this research point out that application of appropriate biostimulator has positive effect on growth and development of roots and shoots of seedling, while inadequate combination of biostimulators leads to inhibitory effect.

AB - Investigation of the impact of sowing time and density on the yield of two winter wheat varieties was carried out at the experimental field of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in 2010/11. year, as part of long-term field experiment under the name of 'Sowing dates'. In the average for both cultivars and all four densities the highest grain yield of wheat was obtained in the first sowing date and was significantly higher only in relation to the third date. Grain yield showed a tendency to decrease with delayed sowing. Based on the equation of linear regression, it could be concluded that the calculated regression averaged grain yield by sowing dates is 635 kg ha-1. Analyzing the effects of increasing sowing density on grain yield, yield was increased to 500 viable kernels/m2, and then decreased with further increase in sowing density. Looking at the differences in grain yield between different varieties and at the same sowing density, it was observed that at densities of 300, 500 and 700 kernels/m2 yield of variety Zvezdana was slightly higher than at NS-40S, and only when the density of 900 kernels/m2 cultivar NS-40S achieve higher yields.
