AB - With aim to improve characterization and eventually, utilisation of garlic collection from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Serbia, the genetic diversity of 52 accessions was estimated
based on microsatellite markers, agronomic, biochemical and phenotypic traits (UPOV descriptor).
The Shannon index H′ with a value of 0.47–0.95 indicated a high level of diversity for the greatest
number of examined traits according to the UPOV descriptor. Based on agronomic and biochemical traits, groups of genotypes with the highest potential for yield and bioactive properties improvement were singled out. Molecular evaluation indicated the presence of duplicates in the collection and necessity of further research with additional number of DNA markers. The obtained results are important from the aspects of breeding and development of new varieties with improved yield and functional value as well as more economical conservation of genetic resources. Since diversity of plant genetic resources constantly decreases, the obtained results have long-term significance because preserved and genetically variable collections represent a valuable source of desirable genes for future human needs.

AB - One of the major challenges that plant breeders face in the 21st century is food safety for growing human population coupled with extreme climate changes. Accordingly, the most important breeders’ goal is to find appropriate methods in response to these challenges in order to create high-yielding varieties resilient to abiotic and biotic stressors. The aim of this study was to determine optimal doses of gamma irradiation in two wheat and one barley varieties and to apply the identified doses for development of mutant populations. Wheat and barley varieties showed different reactions to applied doses of gamma irradiation. Wheat varieties had germination rate over 90% at all applied doses while barley seeds showed to be more susceptible to gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation had greater influence on seedling height which was clearly
demonstrated by growth reduction with increasing radiation doses. ANOVA showed a significant
difference between genotypes, applied doses of gamma radiation as well as genotype by doses
interaction for seedling height. At highest dose of 600 Gy, the reduction of seedling height was
94.6%, 96.5% and 96.8% in Simonida, Rudnik and NS 40S, respectively. The irradiation doses that
resulted in seedling growth reduction by 50% (GR50) were 210 Gy for barley Rudnik and wheat
NS 40S, and 310 Gy for wheat variety Simonida. Identified doses were used for the irradiation of
2000 seeds of each variety in order to produce mutant populations that will be further used in a breeding program for development of varieties with increased resilience to climate change.

AB - Global agricultural productivity and food security are threatened by climate change, the growing world population, and the difficulties posed by the pandemic era. To overcome these challenges and meet food requirements, breeders have applied and implemented different advanced techniques that accelerate plant development and increase crop selection effectiveness. However, only two or three generations could be advanced annually using these approaches. Speed breeding (SB) is an innovative and promising technology to develop new varieties in a shorter time, utilizing the manipulation of controlled environmental conditions. This strategy can reduce the generation length from 2.5 to 5 times compared to traditional methods and accelerate generation advancement and crop improvement, accommodating multiple generations of crops per year. Beside long breeding cycles, SB can address other challenges related to traditional breeding, such as response to environmental conditions, disease and pest management, genetic uniformity, and improving resource efficiency. Combining genomic approaches such as marker-assisted selection, genomic selection, and genome editing with SB offers the capacity to further enhance breeding efficiency by reducing breeding cycle time, enabling early phenotypic assessment, efficient resource utilization, and increasing selection accuracy and genetic gain per year. Genomics-assisted SB holds the potential to revolutionize plant breeding by significantly accelerating the identification and selection of desirable genetic traits, expediting the development of improved crop varieties crucial for addressing global agricultural challenges.

AB - Pepper is one of the most important vegetable species in Serbia. The use of pepper fruits is very often determined by their type. Tomato-shaped pepper is a fruit type suitable for the pickle processing industry because of its thick pericarp. In this study, several lines of light-yellow tomato-shaped peppers were evaluated in the open field with the aim to develop new variety with appropriate fruit characteristics and without anthocyanin colouration. Eight of selected lines originated from two crosses while two lines originated from variety Novosađanka. Fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit index, pericarp thickness, number of locules, and Brix were measured in technological maturity. According to the obtained data, lines 17 and 24 will be used for further selection process. Line 17 was chosen because of the highest pericarp thickness and high fruit weight and line 24 because of the high content of total soluble solids.
Linija 17 zbog najveće debljine perikarpa i mase ploda, a linija 24 zbog većeg sadržaja suve materije.

abstract = "Pepper is one of the most important vegetable species in Serbia. Line 17 was chosen because of the highest pericarp thickness and high fruit weight and line 24 because of the high content of total soluble solids., Paprika je jedna od najvažnijih povrtarskih vrsta u Srbiji. Linija 17 zbog najveće debljine perikarpa i mase ploda, a linija 24 zbog većeg sadržaja suve materije.",

AB - In Balkan cuisines, as well as in Serbia, pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) has a very diverse use. Knowledge about consumer preferences is of great importance for a breeding process as well as in market-orientated production. According to the authors’ knowledge, there is little data in the literature about consumer preferences in terms of pepper fruit shape, colour and hotness, especially in the region of southeast Europe and Serbia. An online survey to collect data regarding consumer preferences was conducted via Google forms. Four hundred and two participants (52% females and 48% males), answered the survey questions. In the questionnaire, participants were asked about basic personal data: gender, education level, and age.

AB - Cereals are grasses (a monocot family Poaceae, also known as Gramineae) cultivated widely for their grains used in human and animal consumption. From ancient times, cereals have played an important role in world agriculture and nowadays their significance is illustrated by the overall production of 2.996 million tons being harvested globally in 2020 (FAOSTAT, 2021). The most important staple cereal crops are wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, barley, oats, and millet. However, wheat, rice, and maize together comprise at least 75% of the world’s grain production, with 761, 757, and 1.162 million tons harvested in 2020, respectively. Rice, sorghum, millet, and wheat are widely produced in Asia; corn and sorghum in America; and barley, rye, and oats in Europe. These three continents produce together 80% of the world’s cereal grains. Cereals are a pivotal nutrient source in both developed and developing countries since their grains contain major nutritional and energy sources (proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids, fibers) as well as micronutrients (vitamins, magnesium, and zinc) (O’Neil et al., 2010; Papanikolaou & Fulgoni, 2017). However, the utilization pattern of these cereal grains differs. In developed countries, more than 70% of total cereal production is fed to the animals, whereas in underdeveloped countries, 68%–98% of the cereal production is used for human consumption.

AB - The anthers from six pepper genotypes, two hybrids Edita F1, Homera F1, and 4 cultivars: Duga
bela, Una, Amfora and Kurtovska kapija were used in two-year androgenesis experiment. The
anthers were isolated and cultivated on suitable nutrient media, following appropriate protocols.
All tested pepper genotypes responded differently in terms of callus and androgenic embryos
formation. Four androgenic regenerants (Edita_R1, Edita_R2, Edita_R3 and Edita_R4) from the
genotype Edita F1 were used for molecular evaluation and compared with the donor genotype.
The DNA was extracted according to the CTAB protocol, modified by Somma (2004). SSR markers
Hpms1-117, Hpms 1-168, Hpms 1-274, EPMS 650 and CAMS 117 were used for molecular
analysis. The molecular evaluation of the regenerants showed that all androgenic regenerants
had the same allele for all SSR loci as donor genotype Edita F1. Additionally, all androgenic
regenerants were homozygotes for the five tested loci.

AB - High-throughput plant phenotyping (HTPP) tools and platforms have started to be more extensively used during the last decade and integrated into the crop breeding programmes in Serbia. At the beginning, breeding groups have been using different international collaboration projects to access modern HTPP platforms. In these projects, the collections of Serbian wheat, soybean, rapeseed, maize, and sunflower genotypes were analysed under controlled conditions using HTPP equipment. The very valuable data about nitrogen deficiency, salt, heat, drought and other stress-induced responses of the evaluated species and genotypes were obtained. Numerous valuable traits, such as fresh and dry biomass, yield related traits, water consumption, photosynthetic activity, proline, chlorophyll and carbohydrate accumulation, and others were analysed providing useful information for advancing stress tolerance breeding especially important under conditions of the climate change.

AB - Induced mutations are useful tool to broaden the genetic diversity of crops. By using this meticulously orchestrated process, the intention is to harness induced genetic variability to identify and develop new crop varieties that exhibit improved and desirable traits and that are better adapted to changing climate. Within framework of previous IAEA projects, fifteen superior IFVCNS sunflower genotypes, were exposed to gamma rays, fast neutrons, and EMS, altering seedling height. Damage indices (D50 and D30) were calculated for each genotype. Bulk irradiation targeting 30-50% growth reduction will be applied, followed by M1 field cultivation. Promising mutants, that are currently in M6 stage, are currently undergoing selection based on traits like early flowering, reduced stature, leaf and head changes, branching, head angle, sterility, and oil yield. This controlled evolution aims to develop new improved sunflower varieties. Through the activities of the project RER5024, supported by IAEA, mutation breeding is introduced into IFVCNS wheat and barley improvement programs by production and exploitation of three mutant populations.

AB - Tomato is one of the most important species belonging to the Solanaceae family. Focusing on the importance of tomato in human nutrition and the problem of narrowed genetic variability, the aim of the study was to assess morphological and chemical diversity in IFVCNS germplasm collection. Twenty genotypes were analysed for the morphological and chemical fruit traits: average mass (g), length (cm), diameter (cm), pericarp thickness (mm), locules number, moisture content (%), total soluble solids (°Brix), ash content (%), total acidity (%) and pH value. Selected plant material for analysis included: landraces, traditional varieties, breeding lines and commercial varieties. Differences among tomato genotypes in all fruit traits were determined. Fruit mass and locules number had the highest coefficient of variation. The least differences between genotypes were observed in the fruit moisture content. Four principal components accounted for 90.6% of total variance or 36.5%, 24.2%, 19.8% and 10.1%, respectively. Along the axis of the first main component, genotypes were classified into three groups. The first component was defined by fruit length, diameter and mass. The second component was correlated with pericarp thickness and locules number, and the third with moisture content, ash content and total soluble solids. Based on the cluster analysis, genotypes were classified into three groups which were in agreement with the PCA groups. Hybridization between genotypes from different groups was proposed in order to create new hybrids and varieties and to increase tomato germplasm diversity. By crossing those genotypes, improved recombinations in morphological and chemical traits can be expected.

abstract = "Tomato is one of the most important species belonging to the Solanaceae family. By crossing those genotypes, improved recombinations in morphological and chemical traits can be expected., Paradajz je jedna od najznačajnih vrsta iz familije Solanaceae. AB - Seed as a highly-valuable resource is preserved in collections for many years. Although the seed is kept under optimal conditions, monitoring of germination and the presence of fungi during seed preservation is of great importance. Therefore the aim of this paper is to examine the seed health status and germination of 43 onion accessions kept in the timespan for 15 years in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops collection. Germination of seed samples varied from 7-93%. The presence of fungi in the collection was determined on 33 tested samples. Fungi from the genera Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Epicoccum, Fusarium and Penicillium were developed. The following Fusarium species identified on the seeds were F. proliferatum, F. graminearum, F. sporotrichioides, F. solani, F. pseudograminearum and F. equiseti. Based on factor analysis, Fusarium and Penicillium affected germination, while the occurrence of Alternaria species on onion seed is connected to the year of harvest.

AB - Lettuce is one of the most common types of leafy vegetables in human diet that is grown worldwide. Narrow and very small seeds make its sowing very difficult, requiring a lot of time and labour. Also, plants produced by manual sowing are often characterized by uneven germination. Those problems could be prevented by sowing pelleted seeds which require the development of adequate pelleting technology. Absence of quality lettuce seeds in the Serbian market results in large amounts of imported pelleted seeds every year. The aim of this study was to develop a domestic pelleting procedure and examine its effects on seeds quality parameters, in order to provide seeds to local farmers at a more affordable price compared to imported commercial pelleted seeds. Pelleted and non-pelleted seeds of the Panukia F1 hybrid were compared in several quality characteristics (1000 seed weight, germination energy, germination percentage, seedling length) in laboratory and greenhouse conditions. There was no loss in seed quality with the pelleting process, although the seed weight increased 12-19 times. Pelleted lettuce seeds had very high germination energy and seed germination (97-98%). In greenhouse conditions, non-pelleted seeds sprouted unevenly in relation to pelleted seeds. These results confirm the advantages of sowing pelleted seeds in terms of uniform germination and development of lettuce plants, primarily due to the precision of mechanical sowing. By offering domestic pelleting lettuce seeds to the growers, the production process would be significantly improved and accelerated with the reduction of manual labour, and therefore the overall production cost
Usko i veoma sitno seme otežava setvu i zahteva mnogo vremena i rada. Pilirano i nepilirano seme hibrida Panukia F1 poređeno je u nekoliko parametara kvaliteta (masa 1000 semena, energija klijanja, procenat klijavosti, dužina ponika) u laboratorijskim uslovima i proizvodnim uslovima u stakleniku. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju prednost setve piliranog semena u pogledu ujednačenijeg nicanja i razvoja biljaka, prvenstveno zbog preciznosti setve piliranog semena. Ponudom domaćeg piliranog semena zelene salate proizvođačima značajno bi se unapredio i ubrzao proces proizvodnje uz smanjenje ručnog rada, a samim tim i ukupnih troškova proizvodnje.

AB - The Pannonian Plain, as the most productive region of Southeast Europe, has a long tradition of agronomic production as well as agronomic research and plant breeding. Many research institutions from the agri-food sector of this region have a significant impact on agriculture. Their well-developed and fruitful breeding programmes resulted in productive crop varieties highly adapted to the specific regional environmental conditions. Rapid climatic changes that occurred during the last decades led to even more investigations of complex interactions between plants and their environments and the creation of climate-smart and resilient crops. Plant phenotyping is an essential part of botanical, biological, agronomic, physiological, biochemical, genetic, and other omics approaches. Phenotyping tools and applied methods differ among these disciplines, but all of them are used to evaluate and measure complex traits related to growth, yield, quality, and adaptation to different environmental stresses (biotic and abiotic). During almost a century-long period of plant breeding in the Pannonian region, plant phenotyping methods have changed, from simple measurements in the field to modern plant phenotyping and high-throughput non-invasive and digital technologies. In this review, we present a short historical background and the most recent developments in the field of plant phenotyping, as well as the results accomplished so far in Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia. Current status and perspectives for further simultaneous regional development and modernization of plant phenotyping are also discussed.

AB - Late blight (LB) caused by the Phytophthora infestans is a
devastating tomato disease, distributed worldwide. Tomato wild species could
be a potential source of resistance, however, there are little data about their
biochemical response to LB infection. Therefore the aim of the study was to
evaluate total phenolic and total flavonoid content and antioxidative activity in
the leaves of wild (Solanum pimpinellifolium) and cultivated genotype (Bizon)
depending on disease severity. S. pimpinellifolium compared to Bizon was
less susceptible and had five times lower disease severity index (11% and
55% respectively). Additionally, during the disease progression wild
genotype showed a much slower decrease of total biochemical parameters
compared to the cultivated one. Parameters such as total phenolic content
(TP), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging test and ABTS
(2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) radical scavenging
activity in the symptomless leaves and the leaves infection 10-25% remained
the same in S. pimpinellifolium. The susceptible genotype Bizon had about
40% of leaves with the disease severity 25-50%, and a rapid decrease of all
biochemical parameters. A strong negative correlation was observed between
late blight infection and biochemical parameters in Bizon, while in S.
pimpinellifolium late blight infection negatively correlated only with TP, TF
(total flavonoid content) and total antioxidant activity (TAA).

AB - Induced mutations are used for the production of mutant varieties with altered plant characteristics, which result in a significant increase in production and / or improvement in quality. The resulting mutants have contributed to overcoming numerous obstacles in plant breeding and creating new and valuable forms, such as e.g. semi-dwarf wheat varieties, early maturing, disease resistance, etc. The application of induced mutations was widely spread between the 1950s and 1980s, and great successes have been made in creating mutated varieties. The early years of the 21st century have witnessed a return of induced mutation technologies due to a better understanding of mutagenesis and related disciplines, leading to a number of different applications. The economic value of this technology has been proven by the fact that more than 3,300 mutant varieties of different plant species have been created in the world so far, including 291 varieties of bread wheat and 316 varieties of barley. Using this technology, only one variety of paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) was registered in Serbia - Horgoška slatka -X-3 in 1974. Since that time, there have been no examples of successful mutation use in crop varieties creation in Serbia.

AB - The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad, National Institute of the Republic of Serbia has more than 85 years long tradition of plant phenotyping work, but first projects related to use of modern phenotyping platforms were established a decade ago. From these first steps till now, the IFVCNS become one of the leading institutions in this research area in Serbia. So far, the Institute’s researchers finalised four Transnational Access to European Plant Phenotyping Network projects. In these studies, some wheat and sunflower genotypes were identified as potential sources for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Thus, it was found that wheat cvs. NS 40S, Subotičanka and NS Avangarda have relatively high levels of drought and salt tolerance. Use of Flower Colour Image Analysis (FloCIA) software enhanced ray florets colour determination and paved the way to more objective and accurate sunflower phenotyping, while thermal imaging was used for screening of sunflower for tolerance to Sclerotinia head and stem rot. Also, a collaborative work with the Department of Agri-Food Sciences and Technologies, University of Bologna, Italy have shown a good tolerance of camelina to drought at the germination stage. The Institute has a strategy for more intensive use of modern phenotyping technologies in its future research and practice. Recently approved projects: SmartSun (7732457), CROPINNO (101059784), EMPHASIS-GO (101079772) and AgroServ (101058020), funded by the National Science Foundation of Serbia and EU Commission, are aimed at institutional capacity building in the application of phenomics in crop improvement.

AB - Agriculture is one of the “victims” of climate change and one of the most severely affected sectors. It has become evident that as the climate changes, crop production strategies must change as well, including primarily adaptations through breeding and crop management. In the future, it is expected that integrative approaches that combine -omics technologies by using bioinformatic tools will facilitate the identification of target genes and markers for complex traits and facilitate crop adaptation to the changing environment. Within its activities, Twinning project CROPINNO will implement at and validate different phenotyping and multi-omics tools in breeding for improved stress resilience. Sunflower is chosen as a model crop for validation of different tools and approaches since it is considered as potential model crop for adaptation to a changing environment. Activities within CROPINNO are aimed at: i) pre-screening sunflower genotypes from IFVCNS collection using for biotic and abiotic stress resilience using different phenotyping methods; ii) study of effects of drought on sunflower plants at chromatin and transcriptional level; iii) performing whole genome SNP analysis in order to develop SNP-based markers for drought stress resilience; iv) performing integrated data analysis and comparative bioinformatics for drought responses in order to unveil possible direct correlations between stress-induced genes transcriptional variation and histone modification levels and design of networks of candidate genes for sunflower drought tolerance. Models, tools and know-how developed on sunflower will be transferred and implemented in the breeding programs of other main field crops at IFVCNS and Western Balkans region.

AB - The objective of this study was to evaluate boron tolerance of wheat genotypes using mature embryo culture. The analysis involved 79 recombinant inbred lines of the International Triticeae Mapping Initiative (ITMI) population and three Serbian varieties with known boron (B) tolerance (Pobeda – sensitive S, Balerina -medium tolerant MT, and Nevesinjka – tolerant T). The evaluation was performed on a modified MS medium to which 15 mM of boric acid was added. The control medium contained no excess B. Callus fresh weight (CFW) and reduction of fresh callus weight (RFCW) were determined after one month of cultivation. ANOVA has shown highly significant effect of genotype, the media, and their interaction to callus tissue growth and also significant genotypic effect on RFCW. Majority of genotypes (39) had sensitive reaction to excess boron, twenty-three were medium tolerant, while four of them were tolerant. The obtained results can be potentially used for mapping QTLs associated with tolerance to excess B in wheat breeding program.

AB - Wheat is a cool season crop and its optimal daytime growing temperature during reproductive development is 15°C and for every degree Celsius above this optimum a reduction in yield has been observed. Furthermore, at different growth stages, abiotic stresses can impact different physiological processes and as a consequence different yield components that are being set at that stage, reducing yield potential. Having that in mind, we evaluated the effect of individual stresses such as: heat, drought, salt etc., as well as their combined effects (salt and N nutrition, heat and drought, etc.) on winter wheat both at cellular and plant level under controlled laboratory conditions and in a greenhouse. The genotypes, identified in these studies as potential sources of drought and other abiotic stresses tolerance (NS 40S, NS Avangarda, Subotičanka) are to be further investigated and used for the improvement of wheat production in unfavourable conditions caused by climate change. For that purpose combination of prediction models based on machine learning (ML), advanced molecular techniques and genome editing will be used for target gene identification and introgression. In initial steps, machine learning models will be used for prediction of future climate scenarios and to select a set of traits that wheat may need to cope with changes in the environment and enable stable food production. In genome editing experiments ML will be used to reduce need for the experimental screening of potential sites to optimise Cas9’s activity as well as for prediction of possible off-target mutations, thus increasing the efficiency of targeted wheat improvement. This combinatory approach to wheat improvement should enable more rapid gene/trait discovery and their incorporation in cultivated varieties, thus contributing to overall resilience of wheat production and related agri-food systems.

AB - Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the most important Allium species in terms of worldwide production and various usages in human nutrition, medicine, pharmacy and cosmetics. Basic method of garlic propagation is vegetative and creation of new varieties is mainly achieved by clonal selection. The characterization and preservation of samples in germplasm collections is of crucial importance in plant breeding, as well as availability of information about number and characteristics of samples in gene banks. Since pheotypic traits can vary significantly under the influence of environmental factors the characterization is more reliable by using DNA markers. Effective characterization of samples in collections and identification of duplicates is important from the economic aspect, ie. space saving and maintenance costs. The garlic collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (IFVCNS) includes 63 samples of autumn and 67 samples of spring garlic. These genotypes represent a valuable genetic pool for the selection of clones with appropriate characteristics, highly adapted for the production in the agro-climatic conditions of Serbia. Molecular characterization will provide more complete insight into diversity of samples, identification of potential duplicates and enable breeders more efficient selection and development of new cultivars.
