Today, the most commonly grown string bean cultivars are the upright ones, which are suitable for growing on larger areas and for processing. In the countries of the former Yugoslavia, such cultivars are mostly of foreign origin. The development of indoor vegetable production and organic production has resulted in an increased demand for the modern pole string bean varieties in Serbia. In the last few decades, the introduction of foreign varieties of pole string beans (Jerusalemski, Goldmarie, Blau Hilda, Meraviglia di Venezia) has been under way in the country as well. The vegetable breeding program of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia is aimed at the development of cultivars whose characteristics meet the demands of the market, processing industry, green market, intensive production and food standards and which are fully adapted to the local agroclimatic conditions. The traditional domestic local populations of pole string beans have a delicious taste. 'Tisa' and 'Resava', our new string bean cultivars, have been selected from local populations and combine superior market quality, high nutritive value and high and stable yield. The variety Tisa has pods that are long, yellow, broad, flat, and delicious to eat. It gives high and stable yields throughout the summer and fall up until the first frosts of the winter. The variety is suitable for late fall growing and indoor production. The cultivar 'Resava' has a pod that is long, green, round, crisp and succulent and has a pleasant taste. Pollination is good and each petiole produces a cluster of pods. The pods will not develop the string even at high temperatures. The variety is intended for garden growing, the green market, or conventional or organic production.en
