AB - As one of the most common medicinal plants, chamomile is grown on approximately 20,000 ha in the world and on 350 -400 ha in Serbia. Good yields can be expected if the plant is grown up to 500 m altitude. The plant is adapted to various soils; it has modest nitrogen demands and tolerates drought and salinity. The usual yields are: 500-1,000 kg/ha of dry flower heads, 150 kg/ha of seed and up to 4.5-5 kg/ha of essential oil. Drug (Chamomillae flos) has moisture below 12%, appropriate physico-chemical and microbiological properties, referred low amount of heavy metals and at least 4 ml/kg of essential oil. The yield of flower heads and the essential oil quantity and quality depend on various environmental factors, as well as on the genetic background. There is more than forty chamomile cultivars realized in the world; three of them originate from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Banatska, Tip 29 and Tetraploidna). Banatska and Tetraploidna are widely grown. The cultivars are characterized by high yield potential and appropriate essential oil content.
Droga (Chamomillae flos) ima vlagu ispod 12%, odgovarajuće fizičko-hemijske i mikrobiološke osobine, propisano nizak sadržaj teških metala i najmanje 4 ml/kg etarskog ulja.

AB - The effects of weather conditions (precipitation and average daily air temperatures) during the 2014 vegetation period on the moisture of soil planted with pot marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) under organic and conventional production system were analyzed. The analyses were carried out at the experimental fields of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad; Alternative Crops and Organic Production Department in Bački Petrovac. Except for May, the temperatures were higher than for the multi-year average, which contributed to the increased plant evapotranspiration. The frequent precipitation moderately satisfied plant water requirements during the vegetation period. Soil moisture in the rhizosphere zone was generally at sufficient level of water supply. However, in the mid June and during the July soil moisture was at the level which requires irrigation. In organic production, due to better plant development and higher water consumption, occasional lower humidity of the soil was registered, when irrigation would be desirable. Although the sum of precipitation was higher in 2014 compared to the multi-year average, the results confirmed the importance of proper distribution of precipitation in order to maintain normal plant growth and development.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the effects of management practices and biofertilization on microbial activity in rhizosphere and yield of medicinal and aromatic plants. Field experiment was performed using four plant species: peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), pot marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), and dill (Anethum graveolens L.). Treatments were arranged in a split-plot layout in four replicates using basic plots under conventional and organic management, and subplots with and without biofertilizer (Azotobacter chroococcum). Organic management positively affected the microbial number and activity. Biofertilization increased the total microbial number (13-21%), number of ammonifiers (13-60%), nitrogen-fixing bacteria (7-36%), actinomycetes (36-50%), fungi (60-100%), celluloly tic microorganisms (57-217%), dehydrogenase (28-52%) and beta-glucosidase activity (15-39%). The effects of management practices and biofertilization were highly significant for the yield of examined plants. The yields were higher on inoculated treatments both in conventional (5-26%) and organic (7-15%) growing system.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine weed flora occurring in an organic common mallow (Malva sylvestris L.), a newly established crop at the experimental field Bački Petrovac, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, during the growing season of 2014. The weed flora consisted of six species, with even a half being invasive for Vojvodina region (Sorghum halepense, Amaranthus retroflexus, Datura stramonium). The observed low floristic diversity may be related to unbalanced ecological conditions in a newly established crop, invasive species, comparatively low fertilization, allelopathic relations, and possibly robust habitus of the main crop. However, although the flora was low in diversity, both narrow and broadleaf species were represented, with the average infestation as high as 16 individuals per m2. In addition, since the recorded weeds flower from Mart to November, until the development of more efficient methods that are in compliance with the principles of organic agriculture, mechanical weeding should be performed at least three times during the growing season. To our knowledge, this is the first such report on organic common mallow in agro ecological conditions of Serbian province Vojvodina and represents the first step in establishing the adequate weed control measures.

AB - This study was performed in order to assess weed flora diversity in organic and conventional peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) in the second year of growing, and to compare the effects of the two production systems on peppermint traits of agronomic importance. Weed control was not carried out in a season in which the survey was conducted (2014). Comparatively high weed floristic diversity was noted for organically maintained crop, with even five species that are invasive for Vojvodina region occurring in this system only. Therophyte life form dominated in both crops. Concerning the characteristics that are directly related to yield, conventionally grown peppermint outperformed the organic one, except for leaf essential oil content. In order to provide high yield and quality of organic peppermint, regular mechanical weed control and the use of appropriate organic fertilizers would be of the great importance.

abstract = "This study was performed in order to assess weed flora diversity in organic and conventional peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) in the second year of growing, and to compare the effects of the two production systems on peppermint traits of agronomic importance. In order to provide high yield and quality of organic peppermint, regular mechanical weed control and the use of appropriate organic fertilizers would be of the great importance., Pored negativnih efekata na rast i razvoj biljaka, korovi kod lekovitih, aromatičnih i začinskih biljaka mogu kontaminirati krajnji proizvod i tako mu pogoršati kvalitet. AB - In this study we assessed the number of microorganisms in rhizosphere of peppermint (Mentha × piperita L.) as one of the
important aromatic species in Serbia. The trial was set up on chernozem soil at experimental field of Bački Petrovac, Institute
of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad (northern Serbia) in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Rhizosphere soil samples were collected
from both conventional and organic grown peppermint. In each year of investigation two samplings (June and July) were
performed for microbiological analysis. Soil samples were analyzed by the standard methods in four replications and
average number of microorganisms was calculated at 1.0 g absolutely dry soil. The results were analyzed in accordance with
three-way model of analysis of variance. The obtained results showed that a significantly higher number of ammonifiers,
azotobacters and free nitrogen-fixing bacteria was recorded in 2012 compared to 2013 and 2014. Also, a significantly higher
number of azotobacters and free nitrogen-fixing bacteria was obtained in organic than in conventional growing. In addition,
significant differences in number of fungi and actinomycetes were recorded between the sampling terms, i.e. significantly
higher numbers of these groups of microorganisms were found in the second term.

AB - This study was aimed at comparing the abundance of microorganisms in the rhizosphere of four different medicinal and aromatic plant species (basil, mint, dill and marigold) grown under both conventional and organic management on the chernozem soil at the experimental field of Bački Petrovac (Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia). Two sampling terms (June 1 and July 18, 2012) were performed to collect samples for microbiological analyses. The microbial abundance was higher in organic than in conventional system while at the same time significant differences were obtained only with dill rhizosphere. The differences in number of microorganisms belonging to different groups relied upon both plant species and sampling term. Thus, in mint, the recorded number of azotobacters and fungi was significantly higher whereas the number of ammonifiers was significantly lower. The present results indicate that organic growing system affected the abundance of microorganisms in rhizosphere of species investigated, especially in the second term of sampling.
