AB - One of the major challenges that plant breeders face in the 21st century is food safety for growing human population coupled with extreme climate changes. Accordingly, the most important breeders’ goal is to find appropriate methods in response to these challenges in order to create high-yielding varieties resilient to abiotic and biotic stressors. The aim of this study was to determine optimal doses of gamma irradiation in two wheat and one barley varieties and to apply the identified doses for development of mutant populations. Wheat and barley varieties showed different reactions to applied doses of gamma irradiation. Wheat varieties had germination rate over 90% at all applied doses while barley seeds showed to be more susceptible to gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation had greater influence on seedling height which was clearly
demonstrated by growth reduction with increasing radiation doses. ANOVA showed a significant
difference between genotypes, applied doses of gamma radiation as well as genotype by doses
interaction for seedling height. At highest dose of 600 Gy, the reduction of seedling height was
94.6%, 96.5% and 96.8% in Simonida, Rudnik and NS 40S, respectively. The irradiation doses that
resulted in seedling growth reduction by 50% (GR50) were 210 Gy for barley Rudnik and wheat
NS 40S, and 310 Gy for wheat variety Simonida. Identified doses were used for the irradiation of
2000 seeds of each variety in order to produce mutant populations that will be further used in a breeding program for development of varieties with increased resilience to climate change.

AB - Changes in yield components and spike traits are associated with wheat grain yield genetic progress. The aim of this study was to determine variation in yield components, spike and individual grain traits, and their role in winter wheat grain yield genetic improvement under conditions of the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, two-year field trials were conducted in a southern Pannonian location (Novi Sad, Serbia) with ten winter wheat cultivars released between 1931 and 2015. The grain yield had a significant positive linear relationship with the year of cultivar release, showing the improvement rate of 46.4 kg ha−1 yr−1. Grain yield increase has been positively related to the improvement of spike grain weight. Spike grain weight improvement with a rate of 0.25 g yr−1 was followed by simultaneous rise of the individual grain number and grain weight at different positions within a spikelet. Compared to other grains at different positions within a spikelet, G3 grains showed the highest rate of grain weight and the grain number improvement with the year of cultivar release. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease trend of grain protein content in individual grains at different positions. Therefore, wheat breeders should be more focused on grain number and weight improvement of distal grains in order to regain higher grain yield genetic gain under conditions of the Pannonian Plain.

AB - To enhance wheat productivity through advancements in crop production technology and breeding methodology, it is necessary to improve our understanding of the physiological processes associated with biomass accumulation, nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency. Therefore, a field trial with six winter wheat cultivars grown under conditions of four different sowing dates during two growing seasons was conducted to quantify the influence of cultivars and sowing date on variation in nitrogen use efficiency traits, biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake, and their role in grain yield and nitrogen yield determination. Results showed that delaying sowing from October to November reduced grain yield by 1.49 t ha−1 on average per sowing date, and also caused a reduction of 14.6 and 14.3 kg ha−1 in nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, respectively. Late sowing negatively impacted both grain yield and nitrogen grain yield in winter wheat cultivars, which was attributed to changes in biomass accumulation and nitrogen uptake at anthesis and maturity, as well as a decrease in nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen uptake efficiency. The decrease in nitrogen use efficiency under late sowing was primarily due to a decrease in nitrogen uptake efficiency, as the increase in nitrogen utilization efficiency could not compensate for the nitrogen uptake efficiency decrease. The study findings suggest that midearly cultivars produced the highest average grain under different sowing conditions, mainly due to greater biomass accumulation during the pre-anthesis period, which provided additional nitrogen storage capacity. Therefore, under conditions of the Pannonian Plain wheat producers should be focused on the medium early cultivars characterized by increased pre-anthesis biomass accumulation.

Tokom sezone, bilo je izuzetno toplih jesenjih i zimskih perioda, umerenih temperatura u prolećnom delu vegetacije i obilnih padavina u fazama formiranja, nalivanja i sazrevanja zrna.

AB - Triticale grain, a wheat–rye hybrid, has been reported to comply very well with the requirements for modern brewing adjuncts. In this study, two triticale varieties, in both unmalted and malted forms, were investigated at various ratios in the grist, applying different mashing regimes and concentrations of the commercial enzyme Shearzyme® 500 L with the aim of evaluating their impact on wort production. In order to capture the complex relationships between the input (triticale ratio, enzyme ratio, mashing regime, and triticale variety) and output variables (wort extract content, wort viscosity, and free amino nitrogen (FAN) content in wort), the study aimed to implement the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to model the mashing process. Also, a genetic algorithm (GA) was integrated to minimize a specified multi-objective function, optimizing the mashing process represented by the ANN model. Among the solutions on the Pareto front, one notable set of solutions was found with objective function values of 0.0949, 0.0131, and 1.6812 for the three conflicting objectives, respectively. These values represent a trade-off that optimally balances the different aspects of the optimization problem. The optimized input variables had values of 23%, 9%, 1, and 3 for the respective input variables of triticale ratio, enzyme ratio, mashing regime, and triticale variety. The results derived from the ANN model, applying the GA-optimized input values, were 8.65% w/w for wort extract content, 1.52 mPa·s for wort viscosity, and 148.32 mg/L for FAN content in wort. Comparatively, the results conducted from the real laboratory mashing were 8.63% w/w for wort extract content, 1.51 mPa·s for wort viscosity, and 148.88 mg/L for FAN content in wort applying same input values. The presented data from the optimization process using the GA and the subsequent experimental verification on the real mashing process have demonstrated the practical applicability of the proposed approach which confirms the potential to enhance the quality and efficiency of triticale wort production.

AB - Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) and kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea Gongylodes group) take a very important place in vegetable farming around the world. Obtaining good-quality plants with minimal inputs is imperative in production. The experiment was set up in Sombor, on chernozem. The research analyzed the effect of 9 organic and mineral fertilizers (individually and in combinations), in the presence or absence of mulch, on the quality and the yield of cabbage (variety Adema) and kohlrabi (variety Volturno). The content of nitrates, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were determined after harvesting. The highest yield was obtained by using pig manure + 500 kg NPK/ha and mulch in cabbage, and by applying the same treatment without mulch in kohlrabi. Cabbage and kohlrabi fertilized with beef manure in combination with NPK (300 and 500 kg/ha) had a lower concentration of nitrate than with other kinds of fertilizing. The combination of organic and mineral fertilizers gave the best result both in terms of quality (the content of nitrates, N, P) and yield.

AB - For thousands of years, cereal grains have been a primary source for the nutrition of the human population and during the period after major crops’ domestication, agriculture radically transformed human societies worldwide. The most important cereal species in agriculture are maize, rice, wheat, triticale, rye, barley, oats, sorghum, and millets, with a total yield of more than 2750 million tonnes (FAOSTAT, 2021). For the majority of the population, cereal crops remain the major source of calories. In developing countries, cereals provide about 60% of the calories, while in the poorest countries cereal parts in daily calories uptake reach more than 80% (Awika, 2011). On the other hand, in the developed world, approximately 30% of the calories come directly from cereals. Moreover, cereals are essential for animal feed in about 36% of world consumption and industrial.

AB - During the creation of new wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.), in addition to high yield po tential and good technological quality, it is necessary to incorporate genes responsible for resistance to lodging, low temperatures and adaptability to different production conditions. NS Lenija, a new winter wheat cultivar developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (National Institute of the Republic of Serbia) was created by crossing the three divergent parents: cultivar Kupava (Russia) and the cultivars Donna (Serbia) and Aria (Serbia). By crossing these parents, genes responsible for high yield potential, good technological quality, adaptability and stability were successfully combined, enabling this cultivar to be successfully cultivated in the agroecological conditions of Southeast Europe. During the two-year trials of the Commission for the registration of varieties, NS Lenija successfully passed the DUS test (distinctness, uniformity and stability), and on the 7 tested locations achieved a significantly higher average grain yield compared to the grain yield of the check cultivars. When evaluating its chemical and technological properties, it was classified in quality class II, farinograph quality group A-2, and in the technological group of improvers.

Visoka tehnologija gajenja poljoprivrednih useva smanjuje negativan uticaj meteoroloških uslova.
AB - Wheat (Triticum spp.) is one of the most adaptable crop species due to its ability to adjust to the variations of the environmental factors. However, high temperatures, precipitation quantity and distribution during plant development and grain filling affect biochemical processes and consequently grain quality. Advanced technology in growing agricultural crops decreases the negative impact of meteorological conditions. On the other hand, increased technological development and intensified agricultural production cause global climate change. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of abiotic factors (minimum, maximum and optimum average temperature and precipitation sum) on the quality of winter wheat grain. Twenty national and international winter wheat cultivars were analyzed in two growing seasons. The trial was carried out on the experimental fields and in laboratories of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops.

Visoka tehnologija gajenja poljoprivrednih useva smanjuje negativan uticaj meteoroloških uslova. Analizirano je dvadeset sorti ozime pšenice, domaćeg i stranog porekla, tokom dve vegetacione sezone (2021/2022 i 2022/2023) Istraživanja su izvedena na oglednom polju (Rimski šančevi) i u laboratoriji Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo, Novi Sad, Srbija., Wheat (Triticum spp.) is one of the most adaptable crop species due to its ability to adjust to the variations of the environmental factors. The trial was carried out on the experimental fields and in laboratories of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops.",

AB - Due to the progress in both plant breeding and crop production, over the last few decades wheat grain yield has more than doubled in southeastern Europe, as in the Republic of Serbia. Also, earlier studies have reported the relationship between senescence dynamics and grain yield main components, along with other agronomic wheat traits. Acceleration of plant senescence reduces the duration of grain filling, and may have a negative impact on the final grain weight if the mechanisms to exploit the resources gained during the photosynthetic period are unavailable. Therefore, a stay-green phenotype could be one of the breeding aims, since the longer duration of green leaf area is related to mechanisms and traits that alleviate negative environmental effects during the grain filling. In order to determine the variability of stay-green traits, over several years, various vegetative indexes were continuously monitored in a historical set of wheat cultivars.

AB - Cereal crops have shown a steady and successive increase in grain yield in the southern Pannonian environment, owing to changes in agronomy and grain yield potential. Over the past century in Serbia, grain yield has increased at a rate of 63 kg ha-1 in maize, 46 kg ha-1 in wheat and 46 kg ha-1 in barley. Various studies exploring the agronomical basis of grain yield progress in major cereal crops have indicated that the number of grains per unit area is one of the main traits associated with grain yield improvement. A decrease in plant height (5 cm per decade) has led to a decline in straw yield and an increase in the harvest index, favoring better partitioning of dry matter during pre-anthesis development, ultimately resulting in improved grain yield in wheat and barley. Significant changes have also occurred in the duration of different phenological stages in wheat and barley cultivars under the conditions of the Pannonian plain.

AB - Crop breeding is a continuous process aimed at increasing yields and improving crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recently, frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions have led to the fact that classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions and a timely response to new challenges in agricultural production. With all this in mind, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established the Centre of Excellence for Innovations in the Breeding of Climate-tolerant Plants - Climate Crops with the aim of introducing and applying new breeding techniques (NBT), along with efficient phenotyping platforms in crop breeding programs in IFVCNS. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.

abstract = "Oplemenjivanje gajenih biljaka je kontinuirani proces usmeren ka povećanju prinosa i poboljšanju njihove otpornosti na biotičke i abiotičke stresove. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.",

AB - High-throughput plant phenotyping (HTPP) tools and platforms have started to be more extensively used during the last decade and integrated into the crop breeding programmes in Serbia. At the beginning, breeding groups have been using different international collaboration projects to access modern HTPP platforms. In these projects, the collections of Serbian wheat, soybean, rapeseed, maize, and sunflower genotypes were analysed under controlled conditions using HTPP equipment. The very valuable data about nitrogen deficiency, salt, heat, drought and other stress-induced responses of the evaluated species and genotypes were obtained. Numerous valuable traits, such as fresh and dry biomass, yield related traits, water consumption, photosynthetic activity, proline, chlorophyll and carbohydrate accumulation, and others were analysed providing useful information for advancing stress tolerance breeding especially important under conditions of the climate change.

AB - The increasing pressure of climate change, reduction of genetic diversity on farms and constant decrease in arable land present the most challenging aspects for today's crop production. Reintroduction of diverse adapted local varieties and underutilised landraces of wheat, potentially tolerant to different biotic and abiotic stresses, could ensure stable yield under low-input agriculture. The uncharacterized local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat from Serbia and Bulgaria, were collected from small-scale farms and gene banks within a project funded by the Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, aiming to evaluate their genetic diversity. As a part of this comprehensive project, the selected material was evaluated using different molecular marker techniques. The level of genetic diversity and relatedness of a set of 90 Serbian and Bulgarian local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat was assessed using microsatellite molecular markers and 25K wheat Infinium Array. The total of 141 alleles was detected at 20 microsatellite loci with an average number of 7.05 alleles per locus. The PIC value varied from 0.344 to 0.837.
