AB - Sunflower breeding is a continuous process designed to increase yield levels and improve resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding methods that vary by species. The emergence of new techniques, such as genomic selection and genome editing, together with efficient phenotyping platforms, have paved the way for more efficient introduction of desirable traits. New approaches in genotyping and phenotyping have enabled more efficient data collection to identify quantitative traits and explain the genetic basis of agronomically important traits. The creation of sunflower genotypes resistant to climate change can contribute to mitigating the negative impact that agricultural production has on the environment, such as intensive water depletion and greenhouse gas emissions, while on the other hand providing resources for stable agricultural production. The paper provides an overview of new approaches and steps in sunflower breeding and the creation of genotypes tolerant to climate changes, with a review of the activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops related to their application in the NS breeding program.

AB - To overcome the different challenges to food security caused by a growing population andclimate change, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) breeders are creating novel cultivars that have thepotential to improve productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability. Genomic selection(GS) is an advanced approach that may accelerate the rate of genetic gain in breeding using genome-wide molecular markers. The accuracy of genomic selection can be affected by trait architectureand heritability, marker density, linkage disequilibrium, statistical models, and training set. Theselection of a minimal and optimal marker set with high prediction accuracy can lower genotypingcosts, computational time, and multicollinearity. Selective phenotyping could reduce the numberof genotypes tested in the field while preserving the genetic diversity of the initial population. Thisstudy aimed to evaluate different methods of selective genotyping and phenotyping on the accuracyof genomic prediction for soybean yield. The evaluation was performed on three populations:recombinant inbred lines, multifamily diverse lines, and germplasm collection. Strategies adoptedfor marker selection were as follows: SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) pruning, estimation ofmarker effects, randomly selected markers, and genome-wide association study. Reduction of thenumber of genotypes was performed by selecting a core set from the initial population based onmarker data, yet maintaining the original population’s genetic diversity. Prediction ability using allmarkers and genotypes was different among examined populations. The subsets obtained by themodel-based strategy can be considered the most suitable for marker selection for all populations. Theselective phenotyping based on makers in all cases had higher values of prediction ability comparedto minimal values of prediction ability of multiple cycles of random selection, with the highestvalues of prediction obtained using AN approach and 75% population size. The obtained resultsindicate that selective genotyping and phenotyping hold great potential and can be integrated astools for improving or retaining selection accuracy by reducing genotyping or phenotyping costs forgenomic selection.

AB - The most common mechanical damage to soybean in the agroecological conditions of Serbia occurs after the appearance of hail, floods or due to damage from wild animals and insects. In recent years, extreme temperatures accompanied by drought have been increasingly recorded during the summer months, as well as the appearance of hail, which has become frequent during the growing season of spring crops. The aim of this work was to determine the consequences and the extent of yield reduction if hail occurs in the generative stages of soybean development. The occurrence of hail in the R1 (beginning bloom) and R3 (beginning pod) stages of development in the form of plant damage was simulated. This paper will present the results of how three soybean varieties reacted after simulated hail damage in two stages of generative development and what the effects were on yield, height, number of fertile nodes, as well as percentage of plant regeneration. The trial was set up in 2020 as a two-factorial experiment in three replications. Three soybean varieties were sown in late April. In order to simulate hail damage, the plants were cut to a height of 15 cm to ensure at least two nodes and enable the regeneration of the plants. The stage of development of soybean, i.e. the moment of hail damage, had a direct impact on the yield, the number of regenerated plants, as well as the number of fertile nodes.

abstract = "The most common mechanical damage to soybean in the agroecological conditions of Serbia occurs after the appearance of hail, floods or due to damage from wild animals and insects. The stage of development of soybean, i.e. the moment of hail damage, had a direct impact on the yield, the number of regenerated plants, as well as the number of fertile nodes., Najčešća mehanička oštećenja na biljkama soje u agroekološkim uslovima Srbije nastaju nakon pojave grada, poplava ili zbog oštećenja od divljači i insekata. AB - Farmer Participatory trials (FPTs) promote cooperation and knowledge exchange among farmers and researchers in specific agro-climatic conditions. Farmers who actively participate in field experiments are empowered to share their knowledge and preferences. To test and spread innovations in organic production, farmers actively participate in the decision-making process regarding plant variety selection. Farmer participatory trials for organic soybean production were established in five European countries as part of the ECOBREED project. The goal of these trials was to support farmers in selecting new varieties for their respective pedo-climatic zones and locations. This involves farmers directly in the process of developing new soybean varieties, particularly when it comes to working with breeders to observe cross composite populations (CCPs). FPTs for organic soybean were set up in Serbia (2021-2022). Up to 10 soybean varieties were tested on up to 5 locations for two years period. Trial results have big variations within specific locations and production years. Organic farmers continued with testing some subset of soybean varieties in 2023. FPTs are pathway for increasing the uptake of new and improved soybean varieties for low-input and organic production.

AB - One of the goals of the ECOBREED work package SOYBEAN was to develop soybean genotypes with improved agronomic performance and to offer know-how for cultivation practices tailor-made for low input and organic systems. During the project lifetime, the focus of activities was on henotyping for biotic (weed, pest, diseases) and abiotic (drought and chilling stress) stress tolerance screening, as well as crop and nutritive quality and N fixation efficiency. A marker-assisted selection programme was established to identify genes/QTL of particular importance for organic soybean varieties. In addition, an assessment of the effects of cover crops and inoculation in the process of soybean seed multiplication was performed. Creating and selecting new soybean lines suitable for organic production was a key priority. After the first half of the project and the conduction of different trials and identification of useful traits, cross composite populations (CCPs) and soybean lines were available for further field testing. Chosen soybean lines went through the registration trials (2021-2022) to evaluate their performance and adaptability. The first ECOBREED soybean variety was registered by IFVCNS. NS ECOB is the variety with high protein content (00 maturity group) specifically selected for organic and low input production requirements.

AB - In the previous decade, new technologies based on remote sensing and photogrammetry were established as a powerful tool for non-destructive estimation of different plant traits. The high-throughput phenotyping (HTPP) implies the utilization of these tools and techniques, resulting in a fast and accurate assessment of crop development data. In soybean breeding, traditional phenotyping is recognized as a bottleneck in the current selection of superior lines mainly because of the inefficiency and resource consumption. The HTPP could be applied to overcome these shortcomings and not just for the prediction of plant characteristics from a single time point but also for perceiving crop growth based on multi-temporal data. This study aimed to analyze soybean growing patterns in different environments (drought and control) based on the estimated height and biomass of 206 genotypes (early and late varieties) sown in 2020 and 2021. In both seasons, each trait was predicted in eight-time points with previously developed HTPP models and protocols. The estimated values were used to create growing curves and evaluate analyzed genotypes based on their performance. Early varieties were dominant for both traits in drought conditions. In the control, the late material performed better regarding height while early genotypes accumulated more biomass.

AB - Background: In order to reduce the use of synthetic and chemical agents in agriculture, more and more research is turning to ecological, more environmentally friendly methods. Plant aqueous extracts are products that can be a significant source of various elements, depending on the type and quality of soil on which the plant species from which the solution is prepared is grown. Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of aqueous extracts of different plant species on the yield and quality parameters of soybean seeds (Glycine max L.). Aqueous extracts of: nettle, nettle+comfrey, banana, banana peel, onion, willow and soybeans were used foliarly. The 1st foliar treatment plants was done when first flowers opened and the 2nd treatment was done when first pod reached final length. Result: The effect of aqueous extracts depends on the agroecological conditions and the analyzed traits. In 2020 the greatest effect was achieved on the free proline, SOD, Px and CAT. In 2021 the application of certain aqueous extracts had a significant effect on the yield, gerimination energy, germination percentage and vigour seed.

AB - Irrigation is an irreplaceable agrotechnical measure in times of climate change that increases yields and the quality of cultivated plants. Soybeans respond very positively to irrigation, especially in years with pronounced drought at the time of grain formation and pouring. Irrigation increased soybean yield from 41% to 94% in the unfavorable year 2022, and from 13.99% to 15.46% in the favourable year 2023. As a result of irrigation, the protein content decreased, the oil content increased and the yield of protein and oil per unit area increased.

Recently, frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions have led to the fact that classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions and a timely response to new challenges in agricultural production. With all this in mind, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established the Centre of Excellence for Innovations in the Breeding of Climate-tolerant Plants - Climate Crops with the aim of introducing and applying new breeding techniques (NBT), along with efficient phenotyping platforms in crop breeding programs in IFVCNS. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.

AB - Soybean breeders from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops are continuously working on creating new genotypes, from which superior yield lines stand out, and after many years of testing, they are given a two-year test in the Department of Variety Recognition, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management. These tests are performed at five localities, and in order for the line to be registered, it is necessary to achieve an average yield of more than 3% in two years compared to the standard varieties for the certain groups of maturation. The aim of this paper is to consider the yield, protein and oil content, and protein and oil yield per unit area of soybean lines n the first year of testing. The highest grain yield was in the line NS-L 520113 (2480 kg ha-1). The highest protein content was found in the NS-L 400186 (46.23%), while the highest oil content was recorded in NS-L 420219 (22.00%).

AB - Phenomic selection is a promising complement and alternative to genomic selection for improving breeding efficiency. The major advantage of using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to indirectly capture phenotypic variants and predict complex traits is its high-throughput and low cost. Using NIR spectra to predict individual performances in the context of breeding for yield remains relatively novel. Certain wavelengths of NIR light are absorbed by specific chemical bonds that constitute the components of tissues. The relative proportion of each of these bonds within the tissue quantitatively influence the nature of the absorbance or reflection of light at different wavenumbers. Phenomic selection was tested on 206 soybean genotypes, collecting yield and NIRS data. Spectra were obtained from different tissues, grains and dried, milled leaves, measuring absorbance in range 4000 – 10000 cm−1. RR-BLUP model was used for phenomic predictions, considering NIRS data instead of molecular.

AB - Soybean (Glycine max L. Merill) is a high‐value crop due to its high content of protein and oil, which contribute nutrients to both humans and animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the winter cover crops on soybean nutritional quality. For this purpose, near‐infrared spectroscopy was used, due it is an extremely potent tool in plant‐related field of research for analysis. It is commonly used to estimate characteristics of grain including protein, starch, and oil content. Based on reliable calibration models, the spectral characteristics of the examined sample are related to the content of the component of interest. After mulching of cover crop biomass and conservation tillage, two soybean varieties were sown (NS Mercury, 00 maturity group and NS Altis, 0 maturity group). The field trial was grown under conventional production in agroecological conditions of Southeastern Europe at two sites (Rimski Šančevi and Čurug locations) in 2021.

AB - The current study looks at the possibility of using plant growth‐promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Bacillus subtilis as biocontrol agent to enhance plant's tolerance to insect attack. Under stress conditions, the metabolism of a plant cell is generally characterized by elevated formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, plants have developed antioxidant protective mechanisms against oxidative stress. The aim of this paper was to determine the activities of antioxidant enzymes present in roots and leaves of inoculated and non‐inoculated soybean seedlings (with and without exposure to mites, Tetranychus urticae), as well as the level of lipid peroxidation (LP). Results have shown higher LP intensity in non‐inoculated plants treated with mites compared to the control group. During biotic stress caused by mite attack, inoculation successfully reduced oxidative stress.

AB - In past few decades, soybean breeders in Europe have been successful in producing a large number of commercial varieties using conventional breeding methods, most of all single seed descent (SSD) method with various modifications. As a supplement to conventional breeding methods, number of breeding tools like high‐throughput phenotyping, marker assisted selection, genomic selection, and others, are used to speed up the breeding process. Low genetic diversity is a major obstacle to soybean improvement. Therefore, projects between Europe and China, centre of origin of soybean, that involve germplasm exchange are intensified in recent years. Utilization of wild soybean species, especially perennial ones, bears a huge, still unused potential for improving soybean breeding process. Increased demand for non‐GMO soybeans, led to intensifying of soybean research throughout Europe which resulted in the number of companies that offer commercial soybean varieties. The oldest and best‐known among them are Lidea from France, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Serbia, Agroscope from Switzerland, RAGT from France and a number of other companies which initiated soybean breeding programs later.

AB - The combined power of remote sensing and photogrammetry can be used to assess significant information about plant development. The canopy cover (CC) and height (HT) are important for defining the growth patterns of the plants and their reaction to different environmental conditions. The objective of this study was to utilize the technology of high-throughput phenotyping (HTPP) for the temporal screening of soybean CC and HT. The trial was set in 2020 and 2021 at the experimental fields of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia. In total, 206 soybean genotypes divided into early (ED) and late (LD) were grown in drought simulation environments. As a control, the same set of genotypes (EC and LC) was grown in favorable conditions. The CC and HT were determined from the images collected with the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). In both years, the photos were taken four times at approximately 274, 390, 706, and 917 growing degree days (GDDs) after emergence.

AB - Cover crops are being used as a tool to reflect agro-ecosystem services. Cover crops differ in the traits by which they capture resources and influence the local agro-ecosystem. The aim of the research was to examine the effects of the winter cover crops in soybean production through the analysis of yield in the two sustainable cultivation systems (organic and low input) during 2021. The experiments were set up according to the block system method with random plots in four replications at two locations Čurug and Rimski šančevi, Serbia. Winter cover crops were following: pure rye crop (R) and a mixture of peas and oats (P+O) (85:15), while the control treatment (C) was an area without cover crops. It was assumed that soybean will respond positively to the selected treatments, which resulted in an increase in grain yield. Yield and yield parameters positively reacted on mixture (P+O) as a pre crop.

AB - As a part of the ECOBREED project, farmer participatory trials for organic soybean production were set up in Serbia, Germany, Romania, Austria and Slovenia (seasons 2021 and 2022). By setting up trials direct with organic producers, it was enabled that farmers assess the adaptability of the soybean varieties for organic production in specific agro-ecological conditions at their farm locations. This is one practical tool that enables organic producers to contribute and to be involved in the process of creating new soybean varieties, especially in crops composite population (CCPs) observations together with breeders. ECOBREED farmer participatory trials for organic soybean comprised field testings of soybean varieties from three breeding institutions from Serbia, Austria and Romania (Serbia-Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Austria-Saatzucht Gleisdorf, Romania-NARDI-Funduela). The network of organic participatory farms was established in 2021 at 17 locations in 5 European countries.

AB - Omics techniques involve large-scale analyzes related to the totality of certain elements of living beings. Although these techniques are rapidly developing, such as genomics, transcriptomics and others, only a part of these techniques have found application in plant breeding. Genomics certainly represents a basic modern tool in genetic research, through various applications in applied research. One of the most significant uses of genomics in plant breeding is the creation of genomic prediction models, which allow one to select the best candidates for additional breeding work by accurately predicting the genetic potential of specific plants under specific production conditions using only genomic data. Although not a traditional omics technique, high-throughput phenotyping involves quick and automatic measurements of a variety of plant traits, including growth, blooming period, leaf area, and others. These data enable a thorough knowledge of how genes influence overall phenotypic variability, coupled with integration with genomic data.
