AB  - The purpose of this study was to obtain additional value of hydrolates (HYs), by-products during essential oil distillation. Chemical compositions of angelica and hop hydrolates were determined and compared with the corresponding essential oils, and their biological potential tested. Steam distilled essential oils and hydrolates were analyzed by GC-MS, and their biological potential was tested for antioxidant (DPPH, ABTS and reduction power) and antimicrobial activities (against nine bacteria and fungi). Hydrolates were additionally tested for allelopathic activity (on corn and redroot pigweed). The investigated essential oils have totally different volatile profiles and aromas in comparison to hydrolates. The most dominant constituents in the angelica essential oil were limonene, β-phellandrene, α-pinene, α-phellandrene and δ-3-carene, while in the hydrolate it was trans-verbenol. In the hop essential oil the most dominant constituents were myrcene and α-humulene, while in the hydrolate isovaleric acid and linalool were dominant. Angelica essential oil showed higher antioxidant activity in comparison with hop, while hydrolates displayed significantly lower antioxidant activity. Low antimicrobial potential of both essential oils was observed in the case of Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. Antimicrobial activity was not detected in neither of the two hydrolates. In terms of allelopathic activity, hydrolates showed a dose-dependent decreasing activity on germination and seedling growth of corn and redroot pigweed. Angelica and hop essential oils are mainly used in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries because of their aroma. Hydrolates, as by-products, possess potential for application in agriculture as natural herbicides.

The Effect of Biotic Stress in Plant Species Induced by ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’—An Artificial Neural Network Approach

AB  - Infections with phytoplasma present one of the most significant biotic stresses influencing plant health, growth, and production. The phytoplasma ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ infects a variety of plant species. This pathogen impacts the physiological and morphological characteristics of plants causing stunting, yellowing, leaf curling, and other symptoms that can lead to significant economic losses. The aim of this study was to determine biochemical changes in peony (Paeonia tenuifolia L.), mint (Mentha × piperita L.), and dill (Anethum graveolens L.) induced by ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani’ in Serbia as well as to predict the impact of the biotic stress using artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. The phylogenetic position of the Serbian ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani’ strains originated from the tested hosts using 16S rRNA (peony and carrot strains) and plsC (mint and dill strains) sequences indicated by their genetic homogeneity despite the host of origin. Biochemical parameters significantly differed in asymptomatic and symptomatic plants, except for total anthocyanidins contents in dill and the capacity of peony and mint extracts to neutralize superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals, respectively. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed a correlation between different chemical parameters and revealed a clear separation among the samples. Based on the ANN performance, the optimal number of hidden neurons for the calculation of TS, RG, PAL, LP, NBT, •OH, TP, TT, Tflav, Tpro, Tant, DPPH, and Car was nine (using MLP 8-9-13), as it produced high r2 values (1.000 during the training period) and low SOS values. Developing an effective early warning system for the detection of plant diseases in different plant species is critical for improving crop yield and quality.

AB  - The purpose of this systematic overview is to establish the impact of inhalation and topical application of Rosa damascena essential oil in aromatherapy practice. A bibliometric analysis using the different scientific databases was conducted to examine scientific documents related to “rose aromatherapy” and “Rosa damascena aromatherapy”. Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer software were used to extract and visualize information. Founded on a review of 93 papers, the scent of rose essential oil has applications in aromatherapy for reducing anxiety, alleviating pain, improving sleep quality, as well as alleviating physiological symptoms during menopause and PMS. It aids in mitigating stress and reducing stress and reducing depression and fatigue, for relaxation and improving cognitive function, among other benefits. Ultimately, rose essential oil is safe and suitable for self-administration via inhalation or topical application, either alone or with other essential oils.

AB  - This article describes still insufficiently known technology of pot marigold cultivation with the compost produced from the organic waste of the processing of medicinal plants. For the first time the application was analyzed of different amounts of compost (control – without compost, 2, 10 and 30 kg/m2 ) on the morphological, productive and qualitative parameters of two pot marigold varieties (Domaći oranž and Plamen Plus). During the five-year period, the best results in both tested pot marigold varieties were achieved with the 30 kg/m2 compost application. The yield of dry flower was higher for the Domaći oranž pot marigold variety fertilized with 30 kg/m2 compost (1957.4 kg/ha) compared with the Plamen Plus variety (451.1 kg/ha). A significantly higher fresh flower yield of the Domaći oranž variety greatly influenced the increase in the quantities of examined quality parameters (total carotenoids, total phenolic, total flavonoids, and DPPH reduction), whose content was higher in the Plamen Plus variety. The artificial neural network model, was built applying the Broyden-FletcherGoldfarb-Shanno algorithm, exerted the adequate forecasting abilities for the productivity and quality of pot marigold flowers and the influence of compost material, produced from medicinal plants waste (R2 was 0.837 for the training period). This research demonstrates that it is possible to use organic waste obtained in the processing of medicinal plants, supporting the effectiveness of a circular economy model in the cultivation of pot marigold.

The yield of dry flower was higher for the Domaći oranž pot marigold variety fertilized with 30 kg/m2 compost (1957.4 kg/ha) compared with the Plamen Plus variety (451.1 kg/ha). A significantly higher fresh flower yield of the Domaći oranž variety greatly influenced the increase in the quantities of examined quality parameters (total carotenoids, total phenolic, total flavonoids, and DPPH reduction), whose content was higher in the Plamen Plus variety. The artificial neural network model, was built applying the Broyden-FletcherGoldfarb-Shanno algorithm, exerted the adequate forecasting abilities for the productivity and quality of pot marigold flowers and the influence of compost material, produced from medicinal plants waste (R2 was 0.837 for the training period). This research demonstrates that it is possible to use organic waste obtained in the processing of medicinal plants, supporting the effectiveness of a circular economy model in the cultivation of pot marigold.",

AB  - Biopolymer-based films present an ideal matrix for the incorporation of active substances such as antimicrobial agents, giving active packaging a framework of green chemistry and a step forward in food packaging technology. The chitosan-gelatine active coating has been prepared using lemongrass oil as an antimicrobial compound applying a different approach. Instead of surfactants, to achieve compatibilization of compounds, β-cyclodextrin was used to encapsulate lemongrass oil. The antimicrobial effect was assessed using the dip-coating method on freshly harvested cherry tomatoes artificially contaminated by Penicillium aurantiogriseum during 20 days of cold storage. According to the evaluation of the antimicrobial effect of coating formulation on cherry tomato samples, which was mathematically assessed by predictive kinetic models and digital imaging, the applied coating formulation was found to be very effective since the development of fungal contamination for active-coated samples was observed for 20 days.

AB  - The main challenge in controlling the microbiological contamination of historical paper is finding an adequate method that includes the use of cost-effective, harmless, and non-toxic biocides whose effectiveness is maintained over time and without adverse effects on cultural heritage and human health. Therefore, this study demonstrated the possibility of using a non-invasive method of historical paper conservation based on plant essential oils (EOs) application. Evaluation of antimicrobial effects of different EOs (lemongrass, oregano, rosemary, peppermint, and eucalyptus) was conducted against Cladosporium cladosporoides, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Penicillium chrysogenum, which are commonly found on archive papers. Using a mixture of oregano, lemongrass and peppermint in ratio 1:1:1, the lower minimal inhibition concentration (0.78%) and better efficiency during a vapour test at the highest tested distance (5.5 cm) compared with individual EOs was proven. At the final step, this EOs mixture was used in the in situ conservation of historical paper samples obtained from the Archives of Vojvodina. According to the SEM imaging, the applied EOs mixture demonstrates complete efficiency in the inhibition of fungi colonization of archive papers, since fungal growth was not observed on samples, unlike the control samples.

AB  - This research investigated a Balkan endemic species, Achillea clypeolata, collected from two locations (Dobrostan and Ivaylovgrad) in Bulgaria and two locations (Ozren and Rtanj) in Serbia. The goal was to compare the essential oil (EO) of A. clypeolata from these four localities. The EO was isolated from dry aboveground plant parts by hydrodistillation, and the identification of the EO constituents was carried out by GC-MS analyses. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), correlation analysis, and an unrooted cluster tree were used to define distinctions in the presence of volatile compounds in A. clypeolata EO. Results showed that A. clypeolata of Serbian origin (Ozren and Rtanj) contained 1,8-cineole as the main constituent, and belonged to the previously described 1,8-cineole as a dominant compound in the EO profile.

AB  - Sprouted seeds and microgreens are emerging as innovative specialty raw salad crops, valued for their health-promoting properties. However, the risk of foodborne illnesses associated with microbial contamination in microgreens underscores the need for effective sanitization in their production. This study explores using hydrolates, by-products of essential oil distillation from six plants, as natural sanitizers in alfalfa microgreen production. The research investigates their impact on seed germination, antimicrobial activity, and sensory attributes. Results revealed that oregano, fennel, lavender, and lemon catmint hydrolates decrease alfalfa seed germination, while peppermint and hop hydrolates have no significant impact. Peppermint and fennel hydrolates demonstrate notable efficacy in antimicrobial testing. Sensory analysis indicates differences in odour and flavour, with peppermint, oregano, and lavender receiving high scores. According to the results, peppermint hydrolate can be considered a favourable option for alfalfa micro sprout production, contributing to sustainable and organic approaches in urban agriculture and underlining the importance of natural sanitizers for food safety.

The fatty acid composition and bioactive compounds including total tocopherols, phenols, carotenoids, and chlorophyll contents were investigated. The oxidation products were monitored through the peroxide value (PV), anisidine value (AnV), conjugated dienes (CD) and conjugated trienes (CT) content, and total oxidation index (TOTOX) under accelerated oxidation conditions by the oven method.
Results: Linoleic acid was the most abundant fatty acid in investigated oil samples, followed by oleic and palmitic acids. The mean contents of total tocopherols, phenols, carotenoids, and chlorophyll were 518.24, 9.42, 7.54 and 0.99 mg/kg, respectively. In order to obtain an overview
of sample variations according to the tested parameters Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was
applied.
Conclusion: PCA indicated that phenols, chlorophyll, linoleic and oleic acid were the most
effective variables for the differentiation of sunflower hybrids grown in Serbia and Argentina.
Furthermore, based on the fatty acid composition and bioactive compounds content in the oils, a
new Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was developed to predict the oxidative stability
parameters of cold pressed sunflower oil.

The best fit between the modelled and measured traits for ANN model was observed for erucic acid content. RFR modelling for all fatty acids was more effective than ANN model, with the highest precision for palmitic, stearic, and oleic fatty acids (r2>0.9). This study emphasized the possibility of using ANN and RFR models to model winter rapeseed quality traits.

AB  - Two major cannabinoids are present in Cannabis plants. The first one is a psychoactive cannabinoid substance (-)-trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, well-known as THC, based on which medicinal cannabis is categorized as a prohibited narcotic. The other one is cannabidiol (CBD), presented specifically in hemp. CBD is familiar as a pharmacologically active substance, and its application is becoming increasingly important in medicine. Many studies testify to osmotic treatment’s success in removing water from different plant and other materials. Sugar beet molasses has proven to be an efficient osmotic solution in water removal, nutritional enrichment, food safety and quality aspects. The use of a mild temperature regime to preserve plant tissue and nutritional values is one of this process’s advantages. This work is concerned with determining the effect of the drying temperature on CBD and THC content after the osmotic treatment (OT) compared to the natural drying at ambient temperature.

AB  - Essential  oil  (EO)  obtained  by  hydrodistillation  in  a  Clevenger-type  apparatus  from  aerial  parts  of  Nepeta cataria  L.  var.  citriodora (Becker), cultivated in Serbia was subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) to determine the composition. Furthermore, N. cataria var. citriodora essential oil was tested to determine its antimicrobial, antioxidant, antihyperglycemic and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. The antimicrobial activity was tested by broth microdilution method against 16 bacterial strains from American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). Four common tests for measuring in vitro antioxidant activity were used: 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH), reducing power (RP), 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and β-carotene bleaching assay (BCB). Antihyperglycemic activity was examined by using α-glucosidase inhibitory potential (AHgA), while anti-inflammatory activity (AIA) was determined by protein denaturation bioassay, using egg albumin. In total, 36 compounds were isolated and detected by GC-MS technique in N. cataria var. citriodora EO. The EO is mainly comprised of oxygenated monoterpenes (93.1%), and the main compounds were two monoterpenoid alcohols, nerol (38.5%) and geraniol (24.9%), followed by two aliphatic aldehyde, geranial (14.6%) and neral (11.0%). Antimicrobial activity of this EO shows growth inhibition of all tested bacteria strains, and exhibited good antioxidant, antihyper-glycemic and anti-inflammatory activities. The EO obtained from N. cataria var. citriodora grown in Serbia shows valuable biological activity, indicating its potential for use as a supplement in everyday diet and as a natural preservative in food industry.

Agricultural parameters and essential oil content composition prediction of aniseed, based on growing year, locality and fertilization type - an artificial neural network approach

AB  - Predicting yield is essential for producers, stakeholders and international interchange demand. The majority of the divergence in yield and essential oil content is associated with environmental aspects, including weather conditions, soil variety and cultivation techniques. Therefore, aniseed production was examined in this study. The categorical input variables for artificial neural network modelling were growing year (two successive growing years), growing locality (three different locations in Vojvodina Province, Serbia) and fertilization type (six different treatments). The output variables were morphological and quality parameters, with agricultural importance such as plant height, umbel diameter, number of umbels, number of seeds per umbel, 1000-seed weight, seed yield per plant, plant weight, harvest index, yield per ha, essential oil (EO) yield, germination energy, total germination, EO content, as well as the share of EOs compounds, including limonene, cis-dihydro carvone, methyl chavicol, carvone, cis-anethole, trans-anethole, β-elemene, α-himachalene, trans-βfarnesene, γ-himachalene, trans-muurola-4(14),5-diene, α-zingiberene, β-himachalene, β-bisabolene, trans-pseudoisoeugenyl 2-methylbutyrate and epoxy-pseudoisoeugenyl 2-methylbutyrate. The ANN model predicted agricultural parameters accurately, showing r2 values between 0.555 and 0.918, while r2 values for the forecasting of essential oil content were between 0.379 and 0.908. According to global sensitivity analysis, the fertilization type was a more influential variable to agricultural parameters, while the location site was more influential to essential oils content.

The ANN model predicted agricultural parameters accurately, showing r2 values between 0.555 and 0.918, while r2 values for the forecasting of essential oil content were between 0.379 and 0.908. According to global sensitivity analysis, the fertilization type was a more influential variable to agricultural parameters, while the location site was more influential to essential oils content.",

AB  - Our previous research has proven that the immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) essential oil (EO) grown in Serbia possesses respectable biological potential and desirable composition of volatile compounds with the potential for a wide range of applications in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. Within this study, the impact of seasonal variations (temperature, precipitation, and insolation) during three successive years (2017, 2018, and 2019), on the volatile profile of γ-curcumene + ar-curcumene immortelle chemotype was determined. Steam distillation was utilized to extract EO from the plant material, followed by chromatographic mass spectrometric analysis revealing 50 volatile compounds. A multiple linear regression model was developed, and principal component analyses were conducted to deliver detailed information regarding the prediction, component profile, and parallel contents of active compounds of the immortelle EO. Under Serbian agro-ecological conditions, with appropriate harvest method, immortelle can achieve two harvests per year: the first in July, and the second in August. The γ-curcumene + ar-curcumene chemotype usually occurs as the dominant chemotype in the region of the ex-Yugoslavia countries. This chemotype probably developed as an adaptation to climatic conditions, and spring and summer precipitation positively influenced curcumene accumulation in plants. Such a phenomenon was especially noticeable in the first harvest.

AB  - Sunflower breeders aims to create highly productive hybrids with increased protein content for human and 
poultry consumption, to create highly productive hybrids with high oil content, hybrids tolerant to dominant 
diseases and pests, highly productive hybrids with altered oil quality, highly productive hybrids resistant to 
certain herbicide groups, etc. In this paper, the characterization of the latest sunflower oily hybrids grown on the 
territory of Serbia and Argentina and the latest confectionery sunflower hybrids grown in Serbia are performed. 
Seed characterization included examination of seed moisture and oil content, seed dimensions (length, width, 
thickness), geometric characteristics (equivalent diameter, surface area, seed volume, sphericity), gravimetric 
characteristics (true density, bulk density, porosity), general characteristics (hull content, thousand seeds mass), 
firmness and color characteristics. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was applied to the obtained results in 
order to determine the differences between the samples. Obtained dendrogram shows two clusters a and b, clear 
grouping of samples into confectionary and oily hybrids. Within cluster b, two subclusters are observed. 
Subcluster I includes oil hybrids grown in Argentina while subcluster II includes oil hybrids grown in Serbia. 
Observing the groups obtained by HCA it was noticed that the greatest similarity was found among oil hybrids 
grown in Serbia, while the greatest difference was found among confectionery hybrids. Diversity among oily 
hybrids grown in Serbia obtained by HCA, expressed as the Manhattan distance value, ranged from 3.2 to 9.6. 
Confectionery hybrids mutually differed significantly, Manhattan distance values ranged from 6.2 to 22.6

AB  - Mechanical extraction is one of the oldest oil extraction methods. The advantages of mechanical extraction of oil 
in relation to chemical are better oil quality and greater possibility of using pressing cake compared to meal 
containing traces of solvent. Critical parameters in the cold pressed oil production are the raw (pressing) material 
characteristics (type, hull content, oil and moisture content), feeding the press with pressing material, 
temperature, expeller screws speed rotation, nozzles diameter, pre-treatment of pressing material. Since 
sunflower oil belongs to the group of the most represented edible vegetable oils in the world, as in Serbia, this 
paper aims to investigate the newest sunflower hybrids. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of 
sunflower seed characteristics on pressing capacity, oil yield and pressing parameters using global sensitivity 
analysis. The mentioned analysis was preceded by the application of artificial neural networks, which was used 
to predict the capacity, oil yield and pressing parameters based on the obtained characteristics of the seed. It was 
determined that the oil and seed yield had the greatest positive impact on the seeds oil content (24.43 and 
26.85%, respectively), as well as the mass of pressing materials (10.04 and 11.64%). The biggest negative 
impact on these two output parameters had the cake oil content (-16.65 and -14.31%). The obtained result 
indicates that the seeds mass has a decisive influence on the seeds flow through the press, and confectionary 
sunflower hybrids with a significantly higher 1000 seeds mass, compared to oily hybrids, had a significantly 
lower seed flow. Also, the global sensitivity analysis confirmed that sunflower seeds with higher dimensions and 
seeds mass reached higher oil temperature during pressing.

AB  - This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition of steam distillate essential oil and corresponding hydrolate obtained from S. officinalis grown in Serbia, as well as the influence of weather conditions (temperature and precipitations) on their chemical profiles. Furthermore, their antimicrobial activity was investigated in vitro. The main compounds in essential oil were cis-thujone, followed by camphor, trans-thujone, and 1,8-cineole, while hydrolate was slightly different from the essential oil, with camphor, cis-thujone, and 1,8-cineole as the main compounds. Among the eight respiratory-associated microorganisms, Klebsiella oxytoca was the most sensitive to the tested EOs (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)/minimal bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) were 14.20 and 28.4 μL mL−1, respectively). MIC and MBC values of other tested bacteria ranged between 28.40 and 227.25 μL mL−1 while for Candida albicans MIC/MFC ranged from 28.40/56.81 to 56.81–113.63 μL mL−1. Antibiotic susceptibility patterns for the analyzed eight respiratory-associated microorganisms showed an intermediate level of resistance to commonly used antibiotics such as ampicillin, levofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin. As a preliminary approach to the antimicrobial profiling of the tested EO, the obtained results revealed that the tested samples possess remarkable antibacterial activities and could be used to develop pharmaceutical formulations as an alternative to conventional antibiotic therapy.

AB  - The most abundant volatile compounds of sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua L.) essential oil were artemisia ketone (25.4 %) and trans-caryophyllene (10.2 %), followed by 1,8-cineole, camphor, germacrene D and β-selinene. The major volatile compounds in the hydrosol were camphor (25.1 %), 1,8-cineole (20.5 %) and artemisia ketone (10.7 %), followed by trans-pinocarveol and yomogi alcohol. Tested essential oil was rich in oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, while the former were identified as the major class of volatile compounds in the hydrosol, due to higher water solubility. Classification of all sweet wormwood chemotypes, according to essential oil composition, in available literature (17 studies and 61 accessions) could be done according to four chemotypes: artemisia ketone+artemisia alcohol (most abundant), artemisia ketone, camphor and nonspecific chemotype. According to this classification, essential oil of sweet wormwood from this study belongs to artemisia ketone (content varied between 22.1 and 55.8 %). Bearing in mind that hydrosols are a by-product of industrial production of essential oils, and the fact that sweet wormwood hydrosol has high contents of camphor, 1,8-cineole and artemisia ketone, there is a great potential for the use of this aromatic plant primary processing waste product as a water replacement in cosmetic industry, beverages flavoring, for food preservation, as well as in post-harvest pre-storage treatments in organic agriculture.

AB  - Veštačka neuronska mreža (VNM) predstavlja matematički alat veštačke
inteligencije, koju čini mreža međusobno povezanih neurona, koji poput mozga
imaju sposobnost obrade podataka, učenja, i pamćenja. Model VNM pruža bolje
predviđanje u odnosu na model višestruke linearne regresije. Modeli za mašinsko
učenje su naročito primenljivi za proučavanje živih organizama kod kojih su prisutne
kompleksne interakcije između promenljivih. Primena modela VNM je značajna za
predviđanje prinosa i kvaliteta useva, odnosno sirovina u industriji ulja, klasifikaciju
vrsta.
AB  - Artificial neural network (ANN) is a mathematical tool in artificial intelligence,
made up of interconnected neurons. Similar to brain, these neurons have the ability
to process data, learn, and memorize. The ANN model provides better prediction
compared to the multiple linear regression. Machine learning models are handy for
studying living organisms in which complex interactions between variables exist.
The application of the ANN model is important for predicting the yield and quality of
crops, as well as of raw materials in the oil industry, for the classification of species.

Biological and chemical diversity of Angelica archangelica L. — case study of essential oil and its biological activity

AB  - Garden angelica (Angelica archangelica L.), native to the northern temperate region, is widespread in Europe and Asia. Since the middle ages, it has been used for healing and as a vegetable in traditional dishes. In the modern era, it has been proven that A. archangelica has a complex chemical composition. The main derivatives that contribute to the plant’s biological activities are essential oil and coumarins. In this review, the focus is on the cross-analysis of the taxonomy of A. archangelica, and its distribution in different regions, with the presentation of the richness of its biochemical composition, which overall contributes to the widespread use of the roots of this plant in folk medicine. It belongs to the plants that were introduced to the wider area of Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe; as a medicinal plant, it represents a significant part of the medical flora of many areas. Cluster analysis of pooled data indicates a clear differentiation of chemotypes.
