AB - Soybean is a plant species characterized by an extremely narrow genetic base, as a consequence of self-pollination, a long process of domestication and artificial selection. A key phase in maintaining diversity and successful utilization in breeding is the genetic and phenotypic characterization of accessions available in collections. Soybean collection in Maize Research Institute "Zemun Polje" maintains more than 500 accessions from different regions of the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of genetic variation in collection, through the sample of 90 soybean genotypes originated from 15 countries, classified in 5 geographical groups (DOM-Serbia, EUR-European, USA-North American, CAN- Canadian, EXO-China and Japan). Twenty SSR primer pairs were selected for the molecular analysis. To assess the genetic relations among accessions, cluster analysis employing UPGMA method was performed.

AB - Characterisation of bean genotypes, particularly local landraces is important for ongoing breeding programs, especially for drought tolerance. Susceptibility to drought is emphasized when bean is grown as a stubble crop and sown at the middle of summer. The aim of this study was to compare variability of ten bean genotypes to optimal (25 degrees C) and higher (30 degrees C) temperatures in combination with optimal (80%) and reduced (40%) field water capacity (FWC), from the point of growth (root and shoot length and fresh matter accumulation) and thermodynamic parameters of free energy (calculated parameter after drying at 60 degrees C, 105 degrees C and 130 degrees C) during the early seedlings stage. Significant and positive correlation between root length and fresh matter with free energy at symplast and chemically bound water occurred under temperature stress (i.e. 30 degrees C). Root growth and elongation were affected by drought stress, i.e. under a combination of high temperature (30 degrees C) and water deficit (40% FWC). Based on higher energy consumption, the ability of shoot to continue a growth in stressful conditions could be possible to achieve, as was confirm through significant and positive correlation between evaluated growth parameters in shoot and free energy of free water. It could be concluded that most of the examined dry bean accessions expressed some sensitivity to stress applied. Among genotypes tested, local landrace zecak expressed lesser susceptibility to stresses applied. Accession Maksa was more tolerant to changes at cytoplasmic level, while Medijana and Sataja 425 expressed root i.e. shoot stress tolerance. Those accessions could be considered as potentially drought tolerant genotypes.

AB - In the process of plant breeding the application of relevant breeding criteria is very important. The Path analysis is broadly applied with the aim to define yield components that mostly determine the yield and that can be used as quality breeding criteria. However, the significance of revealed relationships between yield and yield components can be affected by various factors, such as diverse genetic material that is observed, traits included into analysis, environments in which the material is observed, as well as, the applied statistic approach to determine the nature of the relationships itself. The interrelationships of yield and yield components of 15 commercial maize hybrids were observed using the Path and factor analyses. According to results of Path analysis, plant height, ear diameter and grain moisture had highly significant genetic and phenotypic direct effects on grain yield. At the same time, factor analysis points out significant effects of two factors on grain yield. Factor 1 was mostly determined by ear length and number of kernels per row, while grain moisture content, ear and cob diameter mostly determined Factor 2.

AB - Modern agriculture, breeding procedures, as well as competition among breeding institutions contribute to further reduction of already narrowed diversity of soybean commercial varieties. The objective of the study was to characterize eighteen soybean cultivars from three different breeding programs for agro-morphological traits and to reveal genetic diversity using molecular markers. Morphological description was performed with 13 qualitative and 9 quantitative traits. The genetic relationships were estimated using 21 RAPD markers. PIC was calculated for RAPD data, while the diversity of qualitative traits was described by Shannon genetic diversity index. Cluster analysis based on qualitative morphological characters showed clear separation of genotypes on the basis of their plant growth type. PC analysis performed for quantitative traits divided genotypes according to their maturity group. Grouping pattern based on molecular marker data was in agreement with pedigree of cultivars. A great similarity was found, primarily between the varieties under the same institution, and then among all examined varieties. Comparison of three methods in the assessment of diversity indicated that morphological markers might provide useful information in breeding process and allow classification by pedigree to some extent, but RAPD markers were found to be superior in assessing differences among genetically very similar genotypes.

AB - Seed protein and oil content ate two main seed quality traits in soybean. Numerous studies confirm negative correlation between seed protein and oil concentration. Short season soybean varieties have higher protein concentration, while late cultivars have better oil content. The objective of this study was to evaluate 135 soybean accessions different maturity groups (00,0,L0,1) on the basis of their protein and oil concentration and to identify the genotypes with the best protein: oil ratio within each group. The accessions from soybean collection of the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (MRIZP) were analyzed for protein and oil content with a NIR spectroscopy. Cluster analysis using combined data of two traits was performed for genotypes of each maturity group. Categories of genotypes based on protein (low protein-LP, medium protein-MP, high protein-HP) and oil content (ow oil-LO, medium oil-MO, high oil-HO) were identified. Proportion of categories differed among groups. The majority of HPHO vatieties were found in maturity groups 00 and 0 (5 and 3 cultivars, respectfully).

AB - Geneticists have been trying to explain adaptability and stability of a genotype in terms of a desirable combination of alleles expressed via epistasis. Stability determined in one set of data is very often stability of a genotype to a prevalent stress factor in a moment of carrying out the experiment. However, grain stability of a certain genotype can be a result of different factors, such as tolerance to drought, or to some important diseases and pests. Yield and yield stability of 15 maize hybrids were observed in 24 environments. The level of the interaction effect of studied maize hybrids was identified by the AMMI analysis, while a number of bands positively related to yield and stability of studied maize hybrids were identified by a genetic characterisation by RAPD markers. Bands positively related to yields were present to a greater extent in parents originating from the BSSS population, while bands positively related to stability were more present in parents originating from the Lancaster population.

AB - Babic M., V. Babic, S. Prodanovic, M. Filipovic, and V. Andelkovic (2012): Comparison of morphological and molecular genetic distances of maize inbreds - Genetika, Vol 44, No. 1, 119-128. Due to an unknown mechanism of genetic control and great environmental effects in the process of trait expression, morphological markers are often considered unreliable indicators of genetic relationships. Morphological characterisation of 19 maize inbreds was done according to the UPOV descriptor, while molecular characterisation was performed with RAPD markers. Based on the estimation of phenotypes according to the UPOV descriptor, the squared Euclidean distance was calculated and then, on the basis of this distance, a morphological similarity matrix was formed. Jaccard similarity coefficients were calculated on the basis of presence-absence of bands on gels in the RAPD analysis. When data were standardised, the comparison between morphological and genetic similarity of observed maize inbreds was done. The correlations varied from 0.47 (inbred L 217) to 0.76 (inbred L 86). The average value of correlations for all studied inbreds amounted to 0.64. Furthermore, the results of the cluster analysis for both markers, molecular and morphological, had high concordance with pedigree data. Environmental effects were decreased in morphological markers (according to the UPOV descriptor) by rescaling a measurement scale from a scale to an ordinal level of measurement and in such a way results of morphological markers approached results of molecular markers in the estimation of the genetic distance (GD) of maize inbred lines.

AB - Srdic J., Z. Pajic, M. Filipovic, M. Babic and M. Secanski (2011): Inheritance of ear yield and its components in sweet corn (Zea mays L. saccharat). - Genetika, Vol 43, No. 2, 341-348. Sweet corn is mutation of field corn in which greater accumulation of sugars and water soluble polysaccharides provide specific taste and texture. It is consumed in the milky stage of the endosperm, so the product's quality and its appearance are important as well as ear yield. That is why breeders pay the same attention to these traits in breeding process. In this paper we analyzed combining ability and mode of inheritance of ear yield and yield components in sweet corn, such as kernel-row number, and ear length, by the use of diallel crosses of six sweet corn inbred lines. ANOVA showed that estimates of general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities were highly significant (p lt 0.01) for all observed traits. Nonaditive gene effects were more significant in the expression of ear yield and ear length, while additive gene effects were more important for kernel-row number. Analysis of components of genetic variance was in agreement with the results of ANOVA of combining ability. The mode of inheritance of kernel-row number was partial dominance, while overdominance was of greater importance for ear yield, and ear length. Inbred line L-4 was indicted as the most desirable, among the examined set of inbreds, in the further sweet corn breeding programs, due to its significant GCA effects concerning ear yield and number of kernels per ear, and ear yield performances of the hybrids in which one of the components was this inbred, according to SCA and hetrosis estimates.
