AB - Suncokret je sve više ižložen negativnim uticajima klimatskih promena, posebno visokim
temperaturama i sušnim periodima, što neretko uzrokuje značajne varijacije i smanjenje prinosa
semena.
sprovodi svake godine multilokacijske mikro i proizvodne ogleda širom zemlje, testirajući
adaptabilnost i stabilnost novih i već raširenih hibrida suncokreta u različitim mikroklimatskim
uslovima. Tokom 2023. godine hibridi nove generacije, odnosno dva konvencionalna hibrida (NS
Kruna i NS Ronin) i dva Express (SUMO) hibrida (NS H 8002 i NS H 8005) posejani su u osam
regiona tj. okruga, kod četiri poljoprivredna proizvođača a u svakom okrugu.
hibridi u proseku ostvarili veće prinose u svim okruzima. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju da novosadski
hibridi nove generacije poseduju izuzetnu adaptabilnost, stabilnost, a pored toga i visok
potencijal za prinos u različitim agroekološkim uslovima širom Republike Srbije.

AB - Although flower pollinator interactions are known to be mediated by floral traits, not enough attention has been paid to the research of secretory tissues and volatile components of sunflower disc florets as potentially important parameters in breeding programs. (1) To our knowledge, this is the first integrated study aimed at better understanding the attractiveness of sunflower capitula to insects. In the study, we have made a very detailed comparative analysis of secretory tissues and the characterization of the volatile components (VOCs) of disc florets in 10 wild perennial Helianthus species. (2) For anatomical analyses, cross-sections were obtained from the nectary zone of disc florets using a cryotechnique procedure. Micromorphological observation and morphological and anatomical analysis of disc florets were performed using light and scanning electron microscopy. For VOCs, we applied headspace, GC-FID, and GC/MS analyses. (3) The obtained results indicate that there is a difference between the analyzed traits among studied species. H. eggertii, H. hirsutus, H. mollis, H. resinosus, and H. tuberosus had high disc diameter values, a high cross-section area and disc floret corolla length, as well as the largest cross-section area and thickness of the disc florets nectary. In the analyzed VOCs, 30 different compounds were detected. The highest yield and quantity of α-Pinene was observed in H. mollis. (4) Inflorescence features, such as receptacle diameter, corolla and secretory tissue properties, and floret VOCs production and characterization, provided valuable information that can be used as guidelines in sunflower breeding programs to maximize pollinator attractiveness and increase seed yield.

AB - Breeding for diverse crop rotations involves selecting objectives that often overlap with current breeding programs. However, in the context of diverse crop rotations, a new target population of environments emerges, necessitating selection strategies to maximize genetic gain. The primary breeding goal remains productivity, but additional factors specific to diverse crop rotations, such as yield stability, postharvest quality, and traits associated with disease and insect pests, need to be considered. Occasionally, crops are bred for unexplored regions or novel crops are developed, such as perennial grain crops like intermediate wheatgrass, winter oilseeds like pennycress, and cover crops like hairy vetch. In these cases, breeding efforts may focus on crucial domestication traits such as seed shattering and harvestability.

AB - We have performed bibliometric analysis on field trials of genome edited plants utilizing Scopus and Web of Science core collections. All documents published until May, 2023 were extracted. The final bibliographic data consisted of 39 publications after merging both databases and removing duplicates. Bibliometrix package and Biblioshiny interface available in R studio were utilized to perform the bibliometric analysis. The documents were published in various sources (38) with diverse scopes. Frontiers in Plant Science and Plant Biotechnology Journal were the most active followed by Research Journal of Biotechnology. India and the USA were the leading countries on the topic. The Sankey plot demonstrated that besides publishing on genome editing and field trials, the USA was also publishing in CRISPR/Cas9, acrylamide and biosafety as sub-topics. India was also associated with acrylamide. Acrylamide as a keyword and sub-topic was published in Plant Biotechnology Journal based on our data collection. The most frequent keywords displayed with the word cloud following gene/genome editing and field trials were CRISPR, CRISPR/Cas9, genetic engineering, acrylamide, agronomic traits, biosafety, biotechnology, and crop productivity.

AB - Sunflower is the most important oil crop in Serbia and the fourth most important oil crop worldwide. There is a five decade-long tradition of sunflower breeding at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops. Besides the main breeding objectives such as breeding for high seed and oil yield, enhancing biotic stress tolerance has been one of the priorities throughout the past. Nowadays with the climate change jeopardizing sunflower production, increasing abiotic stress tolerance is becoming an important breeding goal. Drought as a major abiotic stress induces plant response on different levels: morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular. On molecular level it causes alteration in gene expression, accumulation of different metabolites and synthesis of specific proteins. As drought tolerance is such a complex quantitative trait, it requires exploiting a holistic approach for the detection of mechanisms sunflower develops to withstand it.

AB - Sunflower broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) is a holoparasitic plant that causes significat yield losses to sunflower crops. Hence, the development of broomrape-resistant hybrids is one of the prime breeding objectives. Using conventional plant breeding methods, resistance genes have been identified which led to the development of a number of resistant hybrids, adapted to different growing regions worldwide. However, while there are many studies on genetic of resistance to broomrape in sunflower, the molecular tools that are available for research on O. cumana are very scarce. Recent advances in sunflower genomics pawed the way for application of modern breeding tools in broomrape breeding and find durable solutions for limiting broomrape spread and virulence. Here we present an overview of those new tools, such as phenotyping, -omics, and genome editing techniques, which need to be introduced into the sunflower breeding programs in order to achieve durable resistance to this parasitic plant.

AB - Crop cultivars in commercial use have often been selected because they show high levels of resistance to pathogens. However, widespread cultivation of these crops for many years in the environments favorable to a pathogen requires durable forms of resistance to maintain “healthy crops”. Breeding of new varieties tolerant/resistant to biotic stresses by incorporating genetic components related to durable resistance, developing new breeding methods and new active molecules, and improving the Integrated Pest Management strategies have been of great value, but their effectiveness is being challenged by the newly emerging diseases and the rapid change of pathogens due to climatic changes. Genome editing has provided new tools and methods to characterize defense-related genes in crops and improve crop resilience to disease pathogens providing improved food security and future sustainable agricultural systems. In this review, we discuss the principal traits, tools and impacts of utilizing genome editing techniques for achieving of durable resilience and a “healthy plants” concept.

AB - Due to the increased demand for sunfower production, its breeding assignment is the ntensifcation
of the development of highly productive oil seed hybrids to satisfy the edible oil industry. Sunfower
Oil Yield Prediction (SOYP) can help breeders to identify desirable new hybrids with high oil yield and their characteristics using machine learning (ML) algorithms. In this study, we developed ML models to predict oil yield using two sets of features. Moreover, we evaluated the most relevant features for accurate SOYP. ML algorithms that were used and compared were Artifcial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Regression, K-Nearest Neighbour, and Random Forest Regressor (RFR). The dataset consisted of samples for 1250 hybrids of which 70% were randomly selected and were used to train the model and 30% were used to test the model and assess its performance. Employing MAE, MSE, RMSE and R2 evaluation metrics, RFR consistently outperformed in all datasets, achieving a peak of 0.92 for R2 in 2019. In contrast, ANN recorded the lowest MAE, reaching 65 in 2018 The paper revealed that in addition to seed yield, the following characteristics of hybrids were important for SOYP: resistance to broomrape (Or) and downy mildew (Pl) and maturity. It was also disclosed that the locality feature could be used for the estimation of sunfower oil yield but it is highly dependable on weather conditions that afect the oil content and seed yield. Up to our knowledge, this is the frst study in which ML was used for sunfower oil yield prediction. The obtained results indicate that ML has great potential for application in oil yield prediction, but also selection of parental lines for hybrid production, RFR algorithm was found to be the most efective and along with locality feature is going to be further evaluated as an alternative method for genotypic selection.

The obtained results indicate that ML has great potential for application in oil yield prediction, but also selection of parental lines for hybrid production, RFR algorithm was found to be the most efective and along with locality feature is going to be further evaluated as an alternative method for genotypic selection.",

AB - Sunflower is one of the most important oil crops in the world that become a strategic plant due to the increased demand for its oil in recent years. Sunflower has low climate demand that enables it to grow in many regions of Europe. The biggest problem in sunflower cultivation is the presence of parasitic plants called broomrape (O. cumana). The seeds of these non-photosynthetic parasitic plants germinate with the secretion of Sesquiterpene Lactones (STL) from the roots of the sunflower. After attachment to the roots of the sunflower, it absorbs the water and all the nutrients from the host. Just one broomrape plant can produce millions of tiny seeds that can survive more than 15 years in the soil and can contaminate many fields in a region. Classical herbicides and mechanical techniques are not effective on these parasitic plants, since it already causes great damage to the plant when it rises above the ground. Many sunflower lines resistant to broomrape have been developed in last decades. However, the resistance of these lines was broken by emergence of new virulent broomrape strains. In recent years, secretion of Sesquiterpene Lactones (STLs) from sunflower roots has been found to trigger the germination of broomrape seeds. The genes encoding the enzymes (HaGAS, HaGAO, HaG8H, HaCOS) functional in STL biosynthesis in sunflower have been well characterized in recent years. In the light of all these information, genes of the enzymes that catalyze the production STLS was aimed to knockout with CRISPR/Cas9 technique in the project.

AB - Wheat is a cool season crop and its optimal daytime growing temperature during reproductive development is 15°C and for every degree Celsius above this optimum a reduction in yield has been observed. Furthermore, at different growth stages, abiotic stresses can impact different physiological processes and as a consequence different yield components that are being set at that stage, reducing yield potential. Having that in mind, we evaluated the effect of individual stresses such as: heat, drought, salt etc., as well as their combined effects (salt and N nutrition, heat and drought, etc.) on winter wheat both at cellular and plant level under controlled laboratory conditions and in a greenhouse. The genotypes, identified in these studies as potential sources of drought and other abiotic stresses tolerance (NS 40S, NS Avangarda, Subotičanka) are to be further investigated and used for the improvement of wheat production in unfavourable conditions caused by climate change. For that purpose combination of prediction models based on machine learning (ML), advanced molecular techniques and genome editing will be used for target gene identification and introgression. In initial steps, machine learning models will be used for prediction of future climate scenarios and to select a set of traits that wheat may need to cope with changes in the environment and enable stable food production. In genome editing experiments ML will be used to reduce need for the experimental screening of potential sites to optimise Cas9’s activity as well as for prediction of possible off-target mutations, thus increasing the efficiency of targeted wheat improvement. This combinatory approach to wheat improvement should enable more rapid gene/trait discovery and their incorporation in cultivated varieties, thus contributing to overall resilience of wheat production and related agri-food systems.

AB - Salt stress affects all phases of rapeseed growth and development, but seed germination and seedling growth are the most sensitive. In our previous studies, we have evaluated effect of salt stress on the germination process of rapeseed in controlled laboratory conditions. We tested eight rapeseed cultivars Banaćanka, Jasna, Kata, Zorica, Slavica, Anna, Ilia and Zlatna under salt stress (100, 150, 200 and 250 mmol/L NaCl). All tested cultivars had a certain level of tolerance to low NaCl treatments, while at higher concentrations significant damage was observed, which was reflected in the reduction of growth and the appearance of necrosis. Banaćanka and Zorica had the highest germination values in all salt stress levels, while Jasna and Zlatna varieties had the highest germination reduction. Between the tested genotypes, obvious differences were observed when analyzing the activity of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase (SOD, GPx), the amount of non – enzymatic antioxidants reduced glutathione (GSH) and the intensity of lipid peroxidation (LP), both in seedlings shoot and in the root. Induction of SOD activity by different concentrations of NaCl was observed in all examined cultivars. Tolerant varieties showed increased activity of antioxidant enzymes and in regard to this, higher SOD activity was found in cultivars Jasna and Kata. In all examined cultivars, there was a gradual increase in the intensity of LP with a higher concentration of NaCl. Cultivar Banaćanka showed the highest (237.21%) increase at the highest salt stress level, while Kata showed the lowest (147.73%), compared to the control. So far, over 500 drought and/or high-salinity stress-inducible genes were identified in B. napus by using different approaches. Some of the rapeseed genotypes, which have been identified in our study as potential sources of salt and other abiotic stresses tolerance (Banaćanka, Anna, Zorica) are selected for further study of the role of stress-inducible genes and the detection of the most effective genes that would be of interest for targeted genome editing in order to improve salt and drought tolerance of commercial rapeseed varieties.

AB - Recent progress in epigenetic studies paved the way for exploitation of epigenetic variation in crop breeding. Understanding epigenetic mechanisms and variation within a certain crop could potentially help plant breeders to generate new, more resilient varieties through the exploitation of the epigenetic variation existing in crop plants. In addition, environmental buffering effects of epigenetic mechanisms could be used to achieve yield stability in a fast-changing environment leading to more resilient agricultural production. For this purpose, within the framework of ongoing projects SmatSun and CROPINNO, we are developing two approaches for exploitation of epigenetic variation in IFVCNS breeding programs: (i) Epi-breeding, with identification of molecular markers and epigenetics marks for breeding of resilient genotypes by combining and integrating phenotyping and anatomical data with molecular and epigenetics data, along with introduction of epigenetic tools, such as epiQTLs and (ii) (Epi)genome editing and alteration of identified epigenetic marks at a specific locus using CRISPRbased genome editing protocols. These two approaches are expected to lead to the development of new, more resilient crop varieties that would ensure stable and sustainable agricultural production ready to meet future market and environmental challenges.

AB - Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oil crop, but its sustainable production is significantly hampered by various environmental stresses, such as drought. Understanding the variability in root morphological traits among diverse sunflower genotypes is crucial for selecting those with suitable root traits for breeding hybrids better adapted to drought. This preliminary study is part of SmartSun project supported by Fund of Science, Republic of Serbia, and tends to investigate the potential of existing sunflower hybrids to tolerate drought conditions using high-throughput root phenotyping. Two hybrids were selected based on field observation (drought-sensitive: NS Danubius; drought-tolerant: NS Ronin). Root morphological traits in an early growth stage were assessed using a rhizotron phenotyping platform under well-watered control (70% volumetric water content) and drought stress (41-50% volumetric water content), followed by root digital image analysis using WinRhizo scanner. Several root morphological traits were shown to be reliable in differentiating drought sensitivity: fresh and dry root mass, total length of the root system, volume, surface area and diameter. Reduced growth rate and significant decrease in measured parameters was detected for both genotypes under reduced water availability conditions. abstract = "Suncokret (Helianthus annuus L.) je važna uljarica, ali njegovu održivu proizvodnju znatno otežavaju različiti okolišni stresovi, poput suše. Dobiveni rezultati prvi su korak u iskorištavanju novih fenomenoloških alata za identifikaciju otpornosti genotipova suncokreta na sušu., Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important oil crop, but its sustainable production is significantly hampered by various environmental stresses, such as drought. The obtained results are the first step in exploitation of new phenomics tools for identification of drought tolerance of sunflower genotypes.",

AB - Use of multivariate modelling in order to improve prediction accuracy has been widely applied in plant breeding programs. In these models phenotype prediction is based on large number of independent variables which is at the same time strength and weakness. Lately, intensive research in order to improve prediction accuracy resulted in extensive use of different machine learning techniques. The aim of this study is to present new approaches in phenotype prediction based on complex relationships between genotypes and phenotypes. Widely used, one of the main tools in machine learning is artificial neural network (ANN). Although it has a long history, this powerful class of algorithms has been recently used as a state-of-the-art solution for non-linear relationship between the genotype and the trait of interest. Another important advance, capable of identifying extremely complex patterns of prediction and classification of information is called deep learning (DL). Main difference between DL and ANN is in the numbers of layers of neurons. Being based on how humans learn and process information, machine learning is powerful tool for processing complex data in order to make accurate predictions.

AB - Sunflower, a relevant crop for oil production in temperature regions, is
subjected to various biotic stresses. Significance of a particular stress agent, both
spatially and temporally, is determined by the environmental limitations and the
pest population variability. This chapter provides a review of the major sunflower
diseases and pests, with an emphasis on their distribution and description of the
damage they may cause. Besides, we discuss different strategies used in sunflower
breeding for biotic stress resistance, strategy that is reliable, durable, cost effective
and with low negative impact on environment, for pest and disease control. During
a long history of sunflower cultivation, several major breakthroughs in breeding
for resistance to diseases and pests were made. Recent breakthrough in sunflower
genomics and availability of genome data of both sunflower and its pathogens opens
up the new possibilities for introduction of biotic stress resistance into cultivated
sunflower. In the light of changes made over the history and the recent findings we
discuss new tools available for designing sunflower crop resilient to biotic stresses.

u uslovima sredine.
One of the measures to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events is breeding to improve the adaptability of sunflower to different growing conditions. This study aimed to examine the influence of different years and locations on oil yield in 12 standard, oil sunflower hybrids. Experimental trials were set up during four vegetation seasons (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021) in 52 environments (in two years at 15 locations, once at 14 and once at 8). Sunflower hybrid NS Ronin (G7) was distinct as the most stable, followed by high oil yield and considered adaptable to environmental conditions differences. Stable hybrids with high oil yield were also hybrids NS Kiril (G9), NS Providence (G11) and NS Zmaj (G12). The achieved results of oil yield of the mentioned hybrids and their adaptability in different environments justify the trust placed in them by sunflower producers in Serbia and abroad.

AB - Among the effects of wide-ranging climate change, drought presents a significant threat to global agricultural production. Drought reduces yield quantity and quality of crops, particularly in the semiarid and arid regions. Better understanding of plant adaptation to drought is of great interest to both crop science and the society as a whole. Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) possesses one of the largest collections of different wild and cultivated sunflower genotypes and populations worldwide which will be exploited for analysis of drought tolerance mechanisms. Within the project SmartSun the holistic approach of phenotyping and epigenetic mechanisms which modulate sunflower adaptation to drought stresses driven by climate change will be exploited. Using statistical and machine learning techniques, SmartSun will link the data obtained from phenotyping and epiQTLs to create climate-smart sunflower genotypes that will respond to the variable, unstable, and drought environmental growth conditions.

AB - In recent years, sunflower has become a strategic plant due to the increased demand for its oil, as well as low input requirements that enable it to be grown in different agroecological conditions. The most important problem affecting sunflower yield and production are different biotic stressors, such as fungal pathogens and parasitic weed broomrape. The most effective and ecologically-friendly method of control of those stressors is creation of resistant genotypes. Novel, CRISPR-based techniques provide new tools that could accelerate breeding process and introduction of desirable traits into cultivated sunflower. In this work, researchers from Ondokuz Mayıs University and Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) combined their knowledge and know-how in order to develop effi cient CRISPR-based protocol(s) applicable in targeted improvement of sunflower.

AB - In order to select superior hybrids multilocation trials are organized to evaluate genotype, environment and genotype x environment interaction. The sites regression (SREG) model combined with biplot technique, also known as Genotype Main effects and Genotype by Environment interaction effects (GGE), is useful visual method for evaluation of both, genotype and genotype x environment interaction. In the last decade this model is widely used among researchers for evaluation of genotype performance, as well as delineation of mega-environments. The aim of this research was to evaluate interaction effects on seed yield productivity of NS (Novi Sad) sunflower hybrids grown in diverse environments in South-East Europe and to identify mega-environments. Research included eighteen NS sunflower hybrids grown across sixteen environments in three consecutive years. Test environments were located in Serbia and Romania and differ in climatic conditions as well as in soil composition. As an outcome of the study GGE biplot visualized NS-H-16, NS-H-14, NS-H-6 and NS-H-8 as hybrids with the highest average seed yield.

AB - Oil crops breeding at Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) has a successful 50-year long tradition that resulted in collection of 7000 sunflower inbred lines, as well as collection of wild sunflowers and substantial collections of genetic resources of rapeseed, pumpkins and 24 minor oil crops. Creation of new oil crop varieties using classical breeding methods is a long-term process, sometimes not efficient enough to meet demands of changing environment and market demands of 21st century.

AB - Developing wheat able to sustainably produce high yields when grown under biotic/abiotic stresses is an important goal, in order to obtain food security in the face of ever-increasing human population and unpredictable global climatic conditions. However, random mutagenesis or genetic recombination as conventional ways for wheat improvement, are time-consuming and cannot keep pace with increasing food demands. Targeted genome editing (GE) technologies, like zinc-finger nucleases, transcription activator-like effector nuclease, and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/(CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9)) have been successfully used in editing wheat genome to get heritable variations for creating diversity and precision breeding. The tetraploid durum wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L.) and the hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are the most widely cultivated types, both with large genomes, developed as a consequence of ancient hybridization events between ancestral progenitors.
