AB  - In order to be competitive on the market, the production of biopreparations needs to be optimized, modelled, and assessed in the early stages of its development. The aim of this paper was to optimize medium for the production of Trichoderma harzianum K179 biocontrol agent, to analyze its kinetics at enlarged laboratory scale and finally economic analysis of the production of this high-value product through simulation modelling. The results showed that the bioprocess of T. harzianum K179 bioagent production in a laboratory bioreactor on the medium with optimal composition (dextrose 10 g l−1, soy flour 6.87 g l−1, K2HPO4 1.51 g l−1, KCl 0.5 g l−1, and MgSO4 × 7H2O 0.5 g l−1), at stirring speed of 1.75 × g and aeration intensity of 1.5 vvm, can be shortened from 96 to 36 h. The results of bioprocess economic analysis showed that with a 25-year project lifetime and an investment payback time of 7.58 years, this project represents an economically viable system.

AB  - Maize is the most important field crop in Serbia. This agricultural crop, like others, is susceptible to infection by a number of pathogens. Among the most important pathogens, Helminthosporium carbonum and Penicillium spp. were mentioned. Protection of maize from fungal pathogens is mainly controlled by the application of fungicides which are known to have a negative impact on the environment. However, the discovery of new, biological ways of protection would enable a significant reduction of negative effects on the environment and human health. The usage of microorganisms in biological protection is becoming very important, especially in organic and integral production. Trichoderma is certainly a genus that has great potential in protecting plants from fungal pathogens, so the aim of this research was to optimize the medium composition for the production of Trichoderma harzianum biocontrol agent effective against the maize pathogens, H. carbonum and Penicillium sp.

AB  - Maize silage is fundamental for high milk production in dairy farming. The incorporation of new genetic diversity into temperate maize germplasm has the potential to improve adapted cultivars, and it could be especially useful for improving the nutrition of silage varieties. The goal of this study is to assess the potential for lines from the Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) project to compete with commercial silage hybrids when crossed with elite temperate-adapted testers. We examined 35 GEM-derived hybrids along with five commercial checks in seven environments across three years in trials that were arranged in randomized complete block designs. Hybrids were compared based on their potential for conversion into animal productivity units: milk yield per hectare (Milk ha−1) and milk yield per ton of silage (Milk t−1). Broad phenotypic variation was observed for both traits, and the broad-sense heritability of Milk ha−1 and Milk t−1 were 0.24 and 0.31, respectively. Five out of six hybrids in the top 15%, based on a multi-trait stability index, were GEM-derived hybrids. The large proportions of phenotypic variance attributed to genotype by environment interactions (GEI) for quality traits suggests that local adaptation should be leveraged for silage breeding that make use of GEM-derived materials.

AB  - In order to be competitive on the market, the production of biopreparations needs to be optimized, modelled, and assessed in the early stages of its development. The aim of this paper was to optimize medium for the production of Trichoderma harzianum K179 biocontrol agent, to analyze its kinetics at enlarged laboratory scale and finally economic analysis of the production of this high-value product through simulation modelling. Complete analysis of the bioprocess of T. harzianum K179 biocontrol agent production showed that the biologically produced preparation can be competitive on the market with synthetic preparations.

AB  - Sunflower breeding and selection are continual processes designed to increase its yield and improve the resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding. However, classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions for tackling frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions. As response to shortcomings of classical breeding, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established Center of Excellence for Innovations in Breeding of Climate-Resilient Crops – Climate Crops aimed at introduction and application of new techniques such as (epi)genomic selection and genome editing, along with e fficient phenotyping platforms, for more effi cient trait introduction. Climate Crops aims to step up and stimulate excellence and innovation capacity of IFVCNS in sunflower improvement and enhance its ability to respond and create innovative solutions for the challenges that sunflower production, and agriculture as a whole face - climate changes and need to feed the increasing population.
