AB - Maize is a globally significant cereal crop, contributing to the production of essential food products and serving as a pivotal resource for diverse industrial applications. This study investigated the proximate analysis of maize hybrids from different FAO maturity groups in Serbia, exploring variations in polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, tocopherols, and fatty acids with the aim of understanding how agroecological conditions influence the nutritional potential of maize hybrids. The results indicate substantial variations in nutritional composition and antioxidant properties among different maturity groups. The levels of total polyphenols varied among FAO groups, indicating that specific hybrids may offer greater health benefits. Flavonoids and carotenoids also showed considerable variation, with implications for nutritional quality. Tocopherol content varied significantly, emphasizing the diversity in antioxidant capacity. Fatty acid analysis revealed high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, indicating favorable nutritional and industrial properties. The study highlights the importance of considering maturity groups in assessing the nutritional potential of maize hybrids.

AB - Camelina sativa is a member of the Brassicaceae family and is characterized as an annual oilseed plant with a short growth cycle. Its seeds offer rich nutritional value comparable with other feed and food sources due to the presence of high-quality oils, protein, essential fatty acids, and bioactive compounds. Our study investigated mineral profile and bioactive compound contents among two different camelina genotypes. The evaluated camelina genotypes NS Zlatka and NS Slatka were developed in Serbia. The bioactive compound investigation included total phenolic and flavonoid contents, chlorophyll a and b, and total carotenoid contents. Furthermore, antioxidant activity was assessed by measuring the DPPH-scavenging capacity of camelina seed extracts. The results demonstrate differences in mineral content between the two genotypes, with variations in sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, and phosphorus levels.

AB - Lettuce is one of the most common types of leafy vegetables in human diet that is grown worldwide. Narrow and very small seeds make its sowing very difficult, requiring a lot of time and labour. Also, plants produced by manual sowing are often characterized by uneven germination. Those problems could be prevented by sowing pelleted seeds which require the development of adequate pelleting technology. Absence of quality lettuce seeds in the Serbian market results in large amounts of imported pelleted seeds every year. The aim of this study was to develop a domestic pelleting procedure and examine its effects on seeds quality parameters, in order to provide seeds to local farmers at a more affordable price compared to imported commercial pelleted seeds. Pelleted and non-pelleted seeds of the Panukia F1 hybrid were compared in several quality characteristics (1000 seed weight, germination energy, germination percentage, seedling length) in laboratory and greenhouse conditions. There was no loss in seed quality with the pelleting process, although the seed weight increased 12-19 times. Pelleted lettuce seeds had very high germination energy and seed germination (97-98%). In greenhouse conditions, non-pelleted seeds sprouted unevenly in relation to pelleted seeds. These results confirm the advantages of sowing pelleted seeds in terms of uniform germination and development of lettuce plants, primarily due to the precision of mechanical sowing. By offering domestic pelleting lettuce seeds to the growers, the production process would be significantly improved and accelerated with the reduction of manual labour, and therefore the overall production cost
Usko i veoma sitno seme otežava setvu i zahteva mnogo vremena i rada. Pilirano i nepilirano seme hibrida Panukia F1 poređeno je u nekoliko parametara kvaliteta (masa 1000 semena, energija klijanja, procenat klijavosti, dužina ponika) u laboratorijskim uslovima i proizvodnim uslovima u stakleniku. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju prednost setve piliranog semena u pogledu ujednačenijeg nicanja i razvoja biljaka, prvenstveno zbog preciznosti setve piliranog semena.

AB - In this paper, the fatty acid composition of various vegetable oils was determined using gas chromatography with flame-ionizing detection. The analysed oils were obtained by pressing seeds of different genotypes of sesame, chickpeas, caper spurge, flax, okra, saffron, pumpkin and oily gourd from the collection of alternative oil varieties of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad grown during 2020. Based on the composition of individual fatty acids in the tested samples, the content of saturated fatty acids (SFA), unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), w3, w6, w6/w3 was determined, as well as nutritional indices: AI, TI and HH, on the basis of which the quality of vegetable oils was assessed. The investigated samples were characterized by relatively low content of SFA and high content of UFA. The values of nutritional indices ranged from AI 0.06-0.38, TI 0.08-0.75 and HH 2.75-18.91. Unlike okra oil, which has proven to be a vegetable oil of the undesirable nutritional quality, in terms of the high content of SFA and unfavorable values of nutritional indices, most other oils can be characterized as valuable sources of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid, while only flaxseed oil and molehill oil had favorable low values of w6/w3 fatty acids.

In this paper, the fatty acid composition of various vegetable oils was determined using gas chromatography with flame-ionizing detection. Unlike okra oil, which has proven to be a vegetable oil of the undesirable nutritional quality, in terms of the high content of SFA and unfavorable values of nutritional indices, most other oils can be characterized as valuable sources of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid, while only flaxseed oil and molehill oil had favorable low values of w6/w3 fatty acids.",

AB - The growing demand for vegetable oils used in human and animal nutrition or for the processing
industry contributed to the evaluation of other, insufficiently used plant species for farming and
commercial production. Alternative oil seeds represent good sources of nutrients but are also an
important raw material for the various non-food products (biofuel, biopolymers, lubricants, etc.) In
this study, oil contents in seeds of several alternative oil species were analysed and compared with
those of two different genotypes of rapeseeds. Examined samples included white mustard (Sinapis
alba L.), black mustard (Brassica nigra), two different genotypes of rapeseed (Brassica napus), and
two genotypes of camelina (Camelina sativa Crtz.) and safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). All
analysed samples were from the collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (Novi Sad,
Serbia). Oil contents determined by the conventional Soxhlet method ranged from 15.92 to 33.26%
on dry matter. White mustard had the lowest oil content, while the highest oil content was
determined in rapeseeds. Considering oil yields in alternative oilseeds, camelina with oil contents
from 28.51 to 29.33%, besides for human consumption, could be considered as a potential
alternative to conventional rapeseed as industrial raw material for different purposes.

AB - Polyphenols and flavonoids represent a group of compounds with high antioxidant activity. They are called nutraceuticals due to the many favorable effects on human health including anti-cancer, anti-inflammation, anti-allergenic, anti-microbial and anti-atherogenic actions. Those bioactive compounds can be extracted from many plant sources, including wastes from various food industries, and further be utilized for the development of various functional foods. Sunflower seed cake represents a waste from production of cold pressed sunflower oils. It can be exploited for isolation of various bioactive compounds which it contains. In this work, contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids were determined in sunflower seed cakes (n=20) in order to assess potential of this by-product as a source of beneficial natural compounds.

AB - In this paper, the possibility of improving the nutritional quality of refined sunflower oil (S) by adding cold pressed flaxseed oil (L) from the aspect of fatty acid content, as well as certain nutritional indices, was investigated. The content of fatty acids was determined using gas chromatography - mass spectrometry, by analysing fatty acid methyl esters. The contents of saturated fatty acids (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), as well as the content of ω3 and ω6 fatty acids were calculated. By adding flaxseed oil, a significant increase in the content of ω3 fatty acid was observed in the obtained mixtures. No significant changes in the content of SFA were observed during mixing, the content of MUFA was reduced by the addition of flaxseed oil from 30.44 % m/m to 17.15 % m/m, while the content of PUFA increased from 59.78 % m/m to 73.15 % m/m. The obtained PUFA/SFA ratios for mixtures ranged from 6.07 to 7.54, which is consistent with a reduction in risk factors for increased blood cholesterol levels. Atherogenic and thrombogenic indices were much lower than 1, while HH indices were relatively high 14.70-18.03, which are also in accordance with the recommended values from the nutritional aspect of oil quality. The criterion that most affected the quality of mixed oils was the ω6/ω3 ratio, and the optimal values of this ratio (1-5) were achieved by adding 30 to 60% of cold pressed flaxseed oil. Compared to the control sample O, the obtained mixtures showed a great advantage in terms of PUFA content, ω3, ω6, while the extremely high MUFA content and slightly lower SFA content determined in sample O.

AB - Safflower is a multipurpose crop with quality oil and brilliantly colored flowers which are used as a source of natural dyes for food and fabrics. In addition, different parts of the safflower plant have medicinal properties and are useful in treating many chronic diseases. Further, safflower oils are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acid (FA) with a fraction of some very desirable essential fatty acids (EFA). The increased interest for healthier food related with the consumption of long-chain n-3 fatty acids has conducted to the sale of supplements and fortified foods containing these fatty acids. Safflower oils can be considered functional foods without any biochemical additions. The objective of this study was to assay the fatty acid composition of oils obtained from eight safflower cultivars, which belong to the alternative oil crops collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. Oil samples were obtained by pressing seeds in hydraulic press. Fatty acid composition was determined by gas chromatography (Konik HRGC 4000) coupled with a flame ionizing detector, after derivatization to their volatile methylesters (FAME). In order to chemically convert FA to FAME, 10 ul of oils were subjected to transesierification using 190 pl methanolic trimethylsulfonium hydroxide solution (0.2 mol/dm?). Peak identification was performed by comparing the relative retention times with those of a commercial standard mixture of FAME and FA contents are expressed as weight percentages of total FAME. The results have shown significant differences among the safflower cultivars regarding the fatty acids composition. In average, linoleic acid represented the most FA (74.96%) followed by oleic (15.15%), palmitic (5.79%), stearic (2.77%) and a-linolenic (0.40%) acids. Based on obtained results safflower oils were characterized by high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (mean value 75.48%) versus 15.32% of monounsaturated and 8.87% of saturated ones, indicating that the safflower is rich sourse of polyunsaturated EFA (linoleic and a-linolenic).

abstract = "Safflower is a multipurpose crop with quality oil and brilliantly colored flowers which are used as a source of natural dyes for food and fabrics. AB - The work presents results of the determination of metribuzin content in commercial pesticide formulations by applying chronopotentiometry with thin film mercury electrode as an electrochemical sensor. In the analyzed pesticide formulations, a single well defined reduction peak of metribuzin is observed at the potential around -880 mV. The content of the herbicide in commercial formulations is determined using the calibration curve method, by applying the initial potential of -0.21 V, and the final potential of -1.10 V. Recovery values based on the declared and found content of the active ingredient are in the range from 100.67% to 101.68%, with the values of relative standard deviation lower than 1.00%, indicating high accuracy and precision of the presented method.

AB - In this paper, a chronopotentiometric method for the determination of herbicide metamitron (MTM) using a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and a thin film mercury electrode (TFME) as working electrodes is presented. MTM provided a well-defined reductive peak in the Britton-Robinson buffer on both working electrodes. Instrumental and chemical factors such as pH of the buffer, initial potential and reduction current influencing MTM chronopotentiometric response were optimised with the Box-Behnken experimental design. Under the optimal combination of factors, the analytical signal was linear in the MTM concentration range of 0.8-30mg/L, with a detection limit of 68.53 mu g/L using a TFME, and in the concentration range of 1-30mg/L, with a detection limit of 92.91 mu g/L using a GCE. The precision of the method was estimated as a function of repeatability and reproducibility, with the value of relative standard deviation lower than 2.6%. The applicability of the method was verified by direct analysis of MTM in spiked water samples and commercial pesticide formulations. The obtained results were in good agreement with those obtained using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method, or with those labelled by the manufacturer. By using chronopotentiometry, neither extraction nor preconcentration procedures are necessary, thus making this method simple, cost-effective and more feasible for analytical routine analysis.

AB - A new electrochemical method for determination of imidacloprid using chronopotentiometry on thin film mercury and glassy carbon electrode was presented. The most important experimental parameters of chronopotentiometry were examined and optimized with respect to imidacloprid analytical signal. Imidacloprid provided well-defined reduction peak in Britton-Robinson buffer on thin film mercury electrode at -1.0V (versus Ag/AgCl (KCl, 3.5 mol/L)) and on glassy carbon electrode at -1.2V (versus Ag/AgCl (KCl, 3.5mol/L)). The reduction time was linearly proportional to concentrations from 0.8 to 30.0 mg/L on thin film mercury electrode and from 7.0 to 70.0mg/L on glassy carbon electrode. The detection limits were 0.17mg/L and 0.93mg/L for thin film mercury and glassy carbon electrode, respectively. The estimation of method precision as a function of repeatability and reproducibility showed relative standard deviations values lower than 3.73%. Recovery values from 97.3 to 98.1% confirmed the accuracy of the proposed method, while the constancy of the transition time with deliberated small changes in the experimental parameters indicated a very good robustness. A minor influence of possible interfering compounds proved good selectivity of the method. Developed method was applied for imidacloprid determination in commercial pesticide formulations and river water samples.

AB - This paper describes an electroanalytical method for the determination of metribuzin using a thin film mercury electrode by chronopotentiometry. Research included optimization of the most important parameters of chronopotentiometric analysis and the best responses were achieved in Britton-Robinson buffer at pH 5.0, using an initial potential of -0.21 V, ending potential of -1.1 V, and reduction current in the range from -4 mu A to -15 mA. Under these conditions, metribuzin was reduced in an irreversible electrode reaction process with one well-defined reduction wave at -0.83 V (vs. Ag/AgCl, KCl, 3.5 mol dm(-3)). A linear response was observed for three concentration ranges 1-5, 5-15 and 15-30 mg dm(-3), with an achieved limit of detection of 0.042 mg dm(-3). The precision was determined as a function of repeatability and reproducibility, which showed relative standard deviation values not higher than 3.18%. Various interfering substances did not interfere with metribuzin determination. The proposed method was successfully applied to tap and river water samples. The recovery values obtained for spiked river water samples were in good statistical agreement with those obtained by the LC-MS/MS method. Accordingly, the proposed chronopotentiometric methodology can be conveniently applied in the quality control of environmental water samples as a simple, sensitive, reliable and low cost method.

AB - The study deals with mineral characterisation of natural waters from South-East Serbia. The contents of aluminium, arsenic, calcium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, cooper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium, nickel, lead and zinc were analysed in spring, ground and river waters by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICPAES) technique. The study area was in the Southern Serbia, and included slopes of Rtanj, Ozren, Bukovik, Vrdenik and Čemernik mountains, and the valley of South Morava. Obtained contents were compared with Serbian regulations on the quality of water for human use, and directive of World Health Organization (WHO) for maximum allowed concentrations of chemical substances. High contents of macro-elements, namely calcium, magnesium and potassium, were detected in several spring and ground water samples which are believed to be due to direct influence of rock minerals. Some water samples contained iron, manganese and copper in concentration up to 168.3, 8.10 and 14.9 μg dm-3, respectively, but within the permissible limits. Other heavy metals were not detected in analysed samples. Based on the derived results, tested ground and spring water samples have significant potential to be used as sources for the production of bottled water, but further investigations are necessary. Additional investigations have to be focused on complete physical, chemical and microbiological assessments of water resources. Systematic hydrogeological assessment also should be performed in all seasons. In the meantime, precautionary measures should be immediately taken to protect and preserve these water resources.

AB - This study compares different methods for the removal of oxygen from the solution prior to the chronopotentiometric determination of the insecticide imidacloprid on glassy carbon electrode. The research included the application of the chemical method involving addition of sulfite ion, and the physical method of purging the sample with nitrogen stream, as well as their combination. By comparing analytical signals of imidacloprid, chemical method showed almost the same efficiency as conventional physical method, while the best reproducibility was achieved by applying chemical method with addition of the saturated sodium sulfite solution. The method is very simple and can be applied for deoxygenation of the solution prior to the chronopotentiometric analysis. The application of the chemical deoxygenation significantly shortened duration of the chronopotentiometric analysis of imidacloprid from approximately 15 min to 1 min.

AB - In this work deaeration methods were investigated for chronopotentiometric determination of pesticide
imidacloprid [1-(6-chloro-3-pyridyimethyl)-N-nitroimidazolidin-2-ylideneamine] on glassy carbon
electrode. As a supporting electrolyte, a Britton-Robinson buffer was used. All investigations were
carried out in model systems. Cathodic peak of imidacloprid could not be registered only in BrittonRobinson buffer, due to electrochemical reduction of dissolved oxygen. For this reason, it was
necessary to investigate different deaeration methods for removing oxygen from the solution. Within
this, deaerations by various reductants and by passing a nitrogen stream were compared. Investigated
reductants were sodium sulfite, ascorbic acid, oxalic acid, potassium bromide and sodium bromide.
Combinations of a certain reductant and nitrogen were compared as well. Addition of a saturated
solution of sodium sulfite directly in the tested solution proved as the best deaeration method. This
method provided fast deaeration step as it took less than a minute for completely removing the
oxygen. An optimal concentration of the solution of sodium sulfite was also investigated.
Concentrations of sodium sulfite were tested in the range of 0.6 g/idm* to 230 gidm?. Considering the
height of the analytical signal and its reproducibility, concentration of 8.8 gldm? showed as optimal.
This method could be applied for the determination of imidacloprid in commercial formulations and
some real samples.
