AB - This study was undertaken in order to investigate the biological activity of chemically characterized Carum carvi essential oil (EO) and its effect on oxidative stress parameters in stored product pests. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry depicted carvone (68.22 +/- 0.62%) and limonene (21.80 +/- 0.54%) as the major compounds of said EO. Different concentrations of EO were tested for fumigant activity and showed prominent results following a time-response relationship in both tested species. The changes in the antioxidative defense system, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities, as well as the level of lipid peroxidation (MDA) and the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) were estimated in time-dependent response. The results demonstrated that C. carvi could have a significant role in the future, as an environmentally friendly alternative for the management of stored product pests.

AB - Anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) is a herbaceous annual plant from Apiaceae family. It originates from the Mediterranean region where it is quite widespread. On the other hand, star anise (Ilicium verum Hook.) is an evergreen perennial plant from Illiciaceae family. The cultivation of the plant is restricted to south China and Vietnam. Fruit with seed is used from anise, while fruit without seed is used from star anise. The fruit of star anise derives its name from the characteristic star shape. The seed of this plant is rich in essential oil. Both species contain essential oil both in the seed as well as in the fruit, anise approximately 1.7%, star anise from 4.3 to 6.7%. The dominant component in essential oils of both species is trans-anethole (93.2-96.4%).

AB - Based on the number of individuals and percentage of encounters in the studied areas, it is concluded that ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) stand out in comparison to other beetles, which is proved by the qualitative and quantitative composition of the collected fauna (51 species and 4,420 individuals) in the field of wheat, sugar beet and maize. Starting from the domination of geobiotic insects which spend most of their life in soil and manifest their imaginal activity on the surface of soil, the method of "Barber's traps" was applied. Within this family the dominant and subdominant species during research were Anchomenus dorsalis, Poecilus cupreus, Harpalus rufipes, Calosoma auropunctatum, Harpalu distinguendus and many others. 24 carabids species were determined using the COI mtDNA, i.e. 8 species which don't have reference sequence in the gene bank were determined and this contributes to the global bar-code database. The representatives of ground beetle family are of certain economic significance as well. They can appear as pests; on the other hand, they are known to be very beneficial i.e. as regulators of number of harmful insects as reported in numerous research papers of various authors.

AB - When water stress develops post-anthesis, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants have to rely increasingly on remobilization of previously stored assimilates to maintain grain filling. In two-year field trials, we studied more than 20 agronomic and developmental traits in 61 wheat genotypes (27 F4:5 families, 17 parents used for the crosses and 17 standards), comparing plants that were defoliated (DP) by cutting off all leaf blades 10 days after anthesis with intact control plants (CP). Estimated contributions of stem and sheath assimilate reserves to grain weight/spike were from 10-54% and from 24-84% in CP and DP plants, respectively. Stem-related traits were among key traits determining stem reserve contribution (SRC). The most important genetic variables in differentiating genotypes for stress tolerance were biomass/stem, stem reserves mobilization efficiency and grain filling rate (GFR). Balance among traits related to yield maintenance in DP were more important than their high values. In general F4: 5 families (FAM), that had been crossed to combine typical breeding traits such as biomass and yield components, showed better tolerance under moderate stress than standards and parents.

AB - Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) is an annual herbaceous plant from the Apiaceae family, with characteristic odor coming from an essential oil, whose main components are carvone and limonene. Dill's fruit and leaf, i.e. its aerial parts, are in common use. This plant is widely used for medicinal purposes and as a spice. In addition, it can be used in organic agriculture, chiefly to increase biodiversity by combining it with other crops, or grown as a protective crop. It was also found that allelochemicals produced by dill have herbicidal effect, while essential oil and extracts have fungicidal and insecticidal effect. Moreover, dill is used in animal nutrition as a natural growth promoter.

AB - Extensive use of synthetic insecticides, herbicides and other pesticides has negative effects on the environment and on human and animal health. Therefore, scientists are turning towards natural pesticides, such as active components of plant extracts. The effect of two concentrations (0.1 and 0.2 %) of a Satureja montana L. aqueous extract on the lipid peroxidation process, as well as on the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), pyrogallol peroxidase (PPX) and catalase (CAT) in the leaves and roots of pepper and black nightshade seedlings were examined 24, 72 and 120 h after treatment. The results showed that the higher concentration of S. montana aqueous extract induced lipid peroxidation in black nightshade roots. Furthermore, significant increases of pyrogallol and guaiacol peroxidase were detected in black nightshade leaves treated with 0.2 % of the S. montana aqueous extract. The second aim was to evaluate effectiveness of the aqueous extract as a contact toxicant against whitefly. It was observed that the 0.2% aqueous extract exhibited a toxic effect with 68.33 % mortality after 96 h.

AB - Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) originated from Mediterranean area. His appearance is very similar to dill, but unlike it has a sweet taste and odor similar to anise. Fennel has two varieties: var. vulgare also called bitter, and var. dulce or sweet fennel. In organic farming has a much greater significance var. vulgare, which is a perennial species that are grown for fruit. The essential oil of the fruit has antifungal, virostatic, insecticidal and nematicidal properties, and is therefore very suitable for the synthesis of potential biopesticides that could have wide application in organic agriculture. Fennel in flowering produces large quantities of pollen and nectar, so it attracts a large number of beneficial insects for which it is often used for joint planting with other plants, but also as a buffer in organic agriculture. This plant has long been known as a healing, both in human medicine and in veterinary medicine and animal nutrition. Mainly used as a natural antibiotic and stimulator of growth, particularly in poultry, but has great significance in beekeeping, fish and sheep breeding.

AB - With the aim of more rationally wireworm control, different methods for their forecast were investigated. By standard, manual soil survey (0.25 m2), in the middle of October 2001, it was established that there were no significant differences in Elaterid species structure and population densities between optimal and two times smaller number of samples, while on three times smaller number they are. During April-May 2002, potato baits attracted two times more (47.2/m2) and a wheat and corn seed baits even 2.5-15 times more (63-382/m2) wireworms than it was found in standard soil samples (25.4/m2). In early March 2008, potato as attractant was not successful in forecasting wireworms in sugar beet, while wheat and corn seeds were more efficient sown like triangle than single. By plant baits it is sufficiently to survey two or more times less area and four or more times less volume of soil, respectively, which is significant saving in time and labor.
