AB - This research was conducted on Rimski Šančevi at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops,
Novi Sad, Serbia. Fifteen divergent wheat genotypes different in their morphological and
physiological characteristics as well as to originate from different parts of the world were
selected. For wheat breeding to be successful it is necessary to know the interrelationship of a
large number of components which together affect the yield height and quality. Grain yield and
its components (spike length, plant height, grain weight per spike, and heading time) were
analyzed. For the data obtained from the experiment, the following parameters were calculated:
mean, minimum, maximum value, coefficient of variation and standard deviation. Also, analysis
of variance (ANOVA), correlation coefficient and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were
calculated. By applying the ANOVA model, it was found that among analyzed genotypes
significant differences between tested traits were recorded. The coefficient of variation ranged
from 5.02% to 30.85%. Correlation analysis showed that a strong positive relationship occurred
between grain yield and grain mass per spike (r = 0.815), as well as between plant height and
heading time (r = 0.665). A negative correlation occurred between heading time and yield (r = -
0.650) and grain weight per spike and heading time (r = - 0.549). Genotypes Apache, Pobeda and
Acciaio achieved the highest results which were confirmed by Principal Component Analysis.
By analyzing the obtained final results, it was concluded that between genotypes there was a
variability that ranged widely for all tested traits.

AB - The purpose of this research is to examine the variability in yields and yield components of wheat cultivars in Northern Serbia, examine and visualize their groupings and relationships, and determine the correlations between their traits using principal components analysis (PCA). A total of fifteen wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L.), developed in 10 different countries over a period exceeding 70 years, were analyzed during the growing seasons of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 at Rimski šančevi, the experimental station of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. A phenotypic analysis was performed for the following wheat traits: spike weight, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, thousand grain weight, and grain yield. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, an analysis of variance, a correlation analysis for interactions between the traits considered, and PCA. The results obtained indicate significant differences between the genotypes according to all the traits examined. The correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations between the yields produced and nearly all yield components. The PCA confirmed the relationship between the traits examined, grouped the genotypes according to their performance, and highlighted the genotypes eligible for future breeding and research

AB - The permanent need for efficient plant breeding comes from the increment of human population, which is projected to reach 9.7 million by 2050. Novel approaches could be used to reach these goals more rapidly, raising the question of efficiency, as well. Spike length is one of the important components of grain yield formation in wheat. The influence of individual plan traits is getting more important to grain yield formation per area unit in stressful growing conditions, which are increasingly present due to global climate changes. The objectives of the present research were three-fold: (i) to determine the influence of a genotype, environment and their interaction on spike length and to evaluate stability of the trait; (ii) to present cause-causing links on a graphical example; (iii) to transform a number of possibly correlated variables into a smaller number of uncorrelated variables called principal components. Samples were obtained from 96 winter wheat cultivars grown in 2011/12 and 2012/13 on two locations. The wheat genotype population was profiled with 28 microsatellites. The ANOVA of the total phenotypic variation of the experiment shows that genotypes took the largest portion, followed by the influence of the GE interaction. Additional analysis of the GE interaction using the PCA analysis shows a statistical significance of the first two main components. In the conducted research, the dispersion of the points represents two subpopulations, but the geographical origin could not explain the grouping of genotypes within the same, so the division into two groups was done on the basis of their lines of descent.

The objectives of this research were to assess GE interaction in two different environments across two vegetation seasons and to do association analysis based on the results of the phenotypic and molecular evaluation. Grain samples were obtained from 96 winter wheat cultivars grown in 2011/12 and 2012/13 at two locations in the South Pannonia Basin region and population was profiled with 28 microsatellites. The share of genotype is high and amounts 24.84%, while the share of environments was 21.06%, when yield was evaluated. The GE interaction was also statistically significant and amounts 51.58% of the total variance. Microsatellites that exhibited a relation with yield by GLM and MLM model were: gwm357, gwm339, cfa2114, gwm631, gwm495, gwm190, barc1121 and gwm437. Markers that have demonstrated the stability of the relationship with yield in different environments can be recommended as potentially useful in wheat breeding.

AB - Sugar beet is the most important crop for sugar production in Europe. Wide genetic variability is essential in sugar beet breeding programs. The aim of this study is to evaluate variability for the main root traits and differences between monogerm and multigerm sugar beet genotypes from the breeding collection at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops. The following traits were analyzed: root weight (g), dry matter content (%), root head weight (g), root/head ratio (%), number of cambial rings, root length (cm) and root diameter (cm). Mean values for two years per genotype were standardized and used for analysis. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) were used to examine the level of diversity for 20 genotypes and to rank the contributions of the variables. According to CA genotypes could be placed into five main groups, where a large number of multigerm genotypes were put in one group. On average multigerm genotypes were characterized by higher mean values for root weight, length, diameter and lower root head ratio. Multigerm genotypes had higher coefficients of variation for nearly all measured root traits.

AB - Unpredictable environmental conditions lead to occurrence of large genotype by environment (G x E) interaction. It reduces the correlation between genotypic and phenotypic values and complicates selection of superior genotypes. The objective of this study was to estimate genotype by year (G x Y) interaction using AMMI model, to identify spring barley genotypes with stable and high yield performance and to observe association of different meteorological variables with tested growing seasons. The trials with 15 spring barley genotypes were conducted during seven years (1999-2005) at the location of Rimski Sancevi. The results showed that the influence of year (Y), genotype (G) and G x Y interaction on barley grain yield were significant (p lt 0.01). Meteorological variables varied significantly from year to year and Y explained the highest percent of treatment variation (81%). The first three IPCA were significant and explained 83% of interaction variation. According to this study, it could be concluded that AMMI analysis provided an enhanced understanding of G x Y interaction in barley multi-years trials. Among the tested genotypes, LAV and NS 477 could be separated as highest yielding genotypes, however LAV could be recommended for further breeding program and large-scale production due to its stable and high yielding performance. It also provided better insight in specific association between spring barley grain yield and meteorological variables.

It also provided better insight in specific association between spring barley grain yield and meteorological variables.",

AB - The interpretation of new varieties performance is disturbed under the influence of genotype-by-environment interaction. Among several methods used for understanding this effect, one of the most frequently used methods is Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) analysis. In this study we used AMMI method with the aim to estimate the genotype - evironment interaction of 14 barley genotypes, and to identify barley genotypes that have high and stable performance in different environments. The trials were conducted during 11 growing seasons (1995/96 - 2005/06), arranged in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with four replications in location Rimski Sancevi. The results showed that the influence of environment (seasons), genotypes and their interaction on barley grain yield were significant (p lt 0.01). Based on AMMI method, two-rowed variety Novosadski 317 and the six-rowed variety Novosadski 331 can be distinguished due their high and stable yields.

AB - The objective of this study was to develop diallel population hybrids by crossing selected germplasm and to determine the gene effects and genetic control of yield and yield components using diallel analysis. A complete diallel including reciprocals was made during 2003 and 2004 between five alfalfa cultivars of different geographic origin. For each pairwise cross, five plants were chosen at random from each of the two cultivars (similar to 100 florets per plant) to obtain the F-1 generation. A spaced plant field was established in 2006 which included the five alfalfa cultivars (parents) and their 20 diallel hybrids (F-1). The results of the diallel analysis suggest that the genetic control of major agronomic traits is determined by both additive gene action (accumulation of frequency of desirable alleles represented by significant GCA effects) and nonadditive gene action (complementary gene interactions represented by significant SCA effects). This type of gene action expression in alfalfa also determines the way in which breeding is carried out and brings about changes in the methods used and has given rise to the idea of the semi-hybrid breeding of this crop. The concept involves: breeding alfalfas within the population, identification of heterotic germplasm, and the production of seed of the population hybrid (PH).

AB - Genetic markers, from morphological to molecular, in function with early Heterosis is a prerequisite for the successful commercial maize production. It does not appear in any cross of two inbred lines, and therefore, the determination of combining abilities of parental lines is essential. The most commonly used method for determining combining abilities is diallel analysis. Besides conventional methods for diallel analysis, a new biplot approach has been sugested. In this paper, we studied the combining ability for grain yield in a set of genotypes obtained by diallel crossing system of six inbred lines. Both, the Griffing's conventional method and the biplot approach have been used for diallel analysis. Comparing the GCA values from biplot analysis and Griffing's method, similar results can be observed, with the exception of NS L 1051 and NS L 1000 whose ranks are interchanged. Biplot analysis enables the SCA estimation of parent inbred, and the highest SCA has inbred B73D. Biplot analysis also allows the estimation of the best crosses. Inbred B73D shows the best results when crossed with testers Mo17Ht, NS L 1051 and N152, inbred N152 combines best with testers NS L 1001 and NS L 1000, whereas the cross of inbred NS L 1051 with tester B73D results with the highest grain yield per plant in comparison with other testers.
Biplot analiza omogućava i procenu PKS samih roditeljskih linija. Najveća vrednost PKS zapažena je kod linije B73D, a zatim slede: NS L 1051, NS L 1001, Mo17Ht, N152 i NS L 1000. Biplot analiza takođe omogućava i procenu najboljih ukrštanja. Inbred linija B73D pokazala je najbolje rezultate u ukrštanju sa linijama Mo17Ht, NS L 1051 i N152, N152 sa NS L 1001 i NS L 1000, dok se linija NS L 1051 najbolje kombinuje sa testerom B73D.

AB - One of the goals of this paper was to determine correlation between grain yield, like the most important agronomic trait, and traits of the plant and ear that are influencing on the grain yield, in two test-cross populations, which are formed by crossing progenies of NSU1 population after 17 cycles of phenotypic recurrent selection and two testers, 568/II NS and B73. At 568/II NS testcrosses, grain yield had the highest value of genotypic coefficient of correlations with kernel row number. In second studied population the highest value of coefficient of correlations also was found between grain yield and kernel row number, but that relation was negative. Path coefficient analysis provides more information among variables than do correlation coefficients. Because of that goal of this study also was founding the direct and indirect effects of morphological traits on grain yield. Desirable, high significant influence on grain yield, in path coefficient analysis, was found for ear height, in both studied populations. Plant height, in both testcross populations, kernel row number and oil content, at B73 testcrosses, has high significant undesirable effect on grain yield.

AB - The objective of this paper was to assess the importance and effectiveness of progeny tests that can be used in alfalfa breeding for increased green forage yields and shoot number per plant. A total of 35 alfalfa genotypes of different geographic and genetic origins were analyzed. The results of the study have shown that crossing full-sib or half-sib parents leads to a significant increase in yield and shoot number per plant. Significant inbreeding depression was observed in the S1 progenies of all the genotypes involved. The choice of alfalfa parents must be based on progeny analysis. Which particular method will be used will depend on the objective of the breeding program.

AB - Utilization of heterosis requires the study of combining abilities of potential parents. In view of this, the objective of this paper was to study combining abilities and determine the mode of inheritance and gene effects for the main agronomic character, grain yield, and its components, kernel row number and kernel number per row. Six inbred lines were used in the study, three of which originated in the U.S., while the other three were developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. Kernel row number was inherited by superdominance, partial dominance, complete dominance and intermediacy. The mode of inheritance of kernel number per row and grain yield was superdominance. Additive gene action had the greatest influence on the expression of kernel row number, while the other two traits were influenced the most by nonadditive gene.
AB - Iskorištavanje heterozisa zahteva poznavanje kombinacionih sposobnosti potencijalnih roditelja.

AB - One of the objectives of this paper was to determine relationship between grain yield and yield components, in S1 and HS progenies of one early synthetic maize population. Grain yield was in high significant, medium strong and strong association with all studied yield components, in both populations. The strongest correlation was recorded between grain yield and 1000-kernel weight (S1 progenies rg = 0.684**; HS progenies rg = 0.633**). Between other studied traits, the highest values of genotypic coefficient of correlations were found between 1000-kernel weight and kernel depth in S1 population, and 1000-kernel weight and ear length in HS population. Also, objective of this research was founding the direct and indirect effects of yield components on grain yield. Desirable, high significant influence on grain yield, in path coefficient analysis, was found for 1000-kernel weight and kernel row number, and in S1 and HS progenies, and for ear length in population of S1 progenies. Kernel depth has undesirable direct effect on grain yield, in both populations.

AB - For efficient selection of grain yield, like the most importance economic trait, in regard to its on the great influence the environmental factors, has complex mode of inheritance and low heritability, is necessary to know genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of correlations between grain yield and morphological traits of the plant and ear which are influencing on the grain yield. The objective of this paper was to determine relationship between grain yield and morphological traits, in 8 inbred lines and their hybrids. Strong genetic and phenotypic correlations were found between grain yield and other studied traits, except between grain yield, on one side, and kernel row number where we found medium correlations. Between other studied traits, the highest values of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of correlations were found between ear length and cob weight.

AB - Maize is the first crop in the world concerning total production in tons per year. Big money and many scientific workers are working in maize breeding. Millions of new hybrid combinations are tested every year in order to find the best new hybrids. In spite of that, current hybrids have a pretty narrow genetic basis. The main goal in maize breeding is to create a new high yielding hybrid with good adaptability and yield stability. For that, a modern maize hybrid has to posses genes for tolerance against stress (drought and high temperatures), diseases and pest. Another target in maize breeding is to create a new way of testing and to make testing new hybrid combinations more rapid and efficient and less expensive. Genetic variability in maize and conventional and modern techniques of biotechnology will provide enough capability to ensure continual progress in maize breeding. It means that we can expect even better maize hybrids in the future. .
AB - The aim of this paper was to investigate maize inbred lines and their hybrids for the genetic variability and mode of inheritance of plant height, cob weight and grain yield. Twelve inbred lines (eight domestic and four US ones) were used to analyze genetic variability and mode of inheritance. Statistical date analysis showed that there was genetic variability among the inbreds lines for each of the traits analyzed. The results of the study confirmed that superdominance is the mode of inheritance of all three traits studied.

AB - This paper offers a review of investigation on project "Maize breeding for high yield and quality of grain and biomass", No B434, financed by Ministry of Science and Environment Protection, Serbia and Montenegro. Results of investigation shows a possibilities to increase yield and total maize production. New genetic material comprising temperate breeding material and local material or tropical germplasm no more than 25% is good source of new variation for inbred line development. The efficacy of selection for grain yield potential could be increased by indirect selection via characters highly correlated with grain yield such as. Sample of 100S1 progenies studied in more than one environment is sufficient for reliable estimate of mean value and variability of grain yield and grain moisture in synthetic populations of maize. A correct and on time application of grooving technology, such as sowing data, plant density, crop rotation, fertilization can reduce negative effect of unfavorable climate conditions on maize.
4. Pravilan izbor, odnosno, reonizacija hibrida.

AB - Maize breeding in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad has had a long tradition. The main aim of maize breeding is creating high-yielding maize hybrids with good adaptability and yield stability, different maturity groups, suitable for different climatic and economic conditions. So far the Institute has released 184 maize hybrids. Fifty NS maize hybrids have been registered abroad. They have passed official testing compared with the check variety which is usually a good well known hybrid in the commercial production. Regardless of our results from small plot trials or large plot trials through several years or locations the final test maize hybrids have to pass on the farmer fields. Only their grade is valuable for final decision which hybrids have to be chosen. For the next season Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops has completed list of well known hybrids with NS 640, NS 6030, Zenit, Tisa, NS 663 as foundation of commercial production together with several earlier hybrids as NS 540, NS 501, NS 507, NS 510, NS 542, NS 444, NS 402, NS 4010, NS 300, NS 3014. In the beginning of spread a new hybrid recommendation is small field just to get basic information about yield capacity, adaptability and some special properties important for combine harvesting or animal feeding. The following new hybrids should be outstanding: NS 6010, Zenit, Radan, Tisa, NS 507, NS 510, NS 4010, NS 3014. The first three of them are FAO 600 maturity group. Tisa is 700 maturity group and NS 4010 is FAO 400 but it seems that it is nearer to FAO 500 maturity group than to FAO 400. Hybrids NS 507 and NS 510 are in FAO 500 maturity group. NS 3014 is a new hybrid FAO 300. In the end we wish to our growers a good season for maize production and record yields with NS maize hybrids.
Za setvu u 2005. godini preporučuju se: rani hibridi FAO 100: NS 101, NS 184 FAO 200: NS 205, NS 208 i NS 223; srednje rani FAO 300: NS 300, NS 3014; FAO 400: NS 402, NS 4010 i NS 444; srednje kasni FAO 500: NS 540, NS 501, NS 507 NS 510, NS 542, NS 505; FAO 600: NS 640, NS 6010, Zenit, Radan, NS 663, NS 6666, NS 606 i NS 607; kasni hibridi FAO 700: Tisa, Balkan, NS 770, NS 777 NS 7011 i NS 7014; specifični hibridi: Uljani NS 645u, beli NS 609b, NS 5016b i kokičar NS 620k.

AB - Regions for maize production in Serbia are quite different on the basis of amount and distribution of rainfall across vegetation. The first region (West Bačka, South Bačka, East Srem, South Srem and Podrinjsko-kolubarski), and second region (South Banat and Šumadijsko-pomoravski) are more favourable for maize production then regions four (North Bačka, North Srem, East Banat) and five (North Banat and East, South Serbia). Medium late hybrids of FAO 600-700 over yielded medium early hybrids of FAO 300-500 in all regions. The most productive hybrid in 2004 was NS6010.

AB - The aim of this paper was to investigate the genetic variability and the mode of inheritance between inbreed lines and their hybrids, for three very important traits, ear height, cob weight and grain yield. Nine inbreed lines are domestic germplasm made at Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops, and four are from USA. Statistical data analysis shows genetic variability between inbred lines for every analyzed trait. Superdomination was mode of inheritance for ear height and grain yield, found in every observed combination. Obtained results confirmed superdomination and domination as mode of inheritance for cob weight. Highly positive correlations were determined between ear height and grain yield, cob weigh and grain yield and cob weigh and ear heigh.

AB - Genetic variation for stay green character has been exploited in maize improvement mainly in the light of selecting high yielding rather then typical stay green genotypes. Stay green is an indicator of good plant health later in the season, reduced progressive senescence, tolerance to post-flowering drought and stalk lodging what ensure superiority of stay green genotypes in comparison to non stay green ones, especially in drought conditions. The objective of the study was to examine relationship of stay green and grain yield with some vegetative characters in two genetically broad based maize populations. Correlation as well as path coefficient analysis have been used. The most consistent correlations with stay green were established for leaf and stalk water content, which has been confirmed by path-coefficient analysis. At the same time correlation and path coefficient analysis showed quite opposite results about relationship between stay green and grain yield. While correlation coefficients between these two traits were weak and insignificant (r=-0.095), path coefficient analysis showed very strong and highly significant direct effect of stay green on grain yield (p=0.834**).

AB - Genetic variability between inbred lines, way of inheritance and correlation connections between analyzed traits is present in this work. Five inbred lines and their hybrids were analyzed by measuring the row number per cob, weight of 100 kernels and grain yield. Founded way of inheritance for row number per cob was superdomination, intermediar and one combination showed same level as parents. Weight of 100 kernels was inherited at the better parent level and intermediar, and in the inheritance of grain yield we founded superdomination. Between row number per cob and grain yield per plant medium-strong correlation (0.449) was found, between row number per cob and weight of 100 kernels was medium-strong but negative correlation, and grain yield vs. weight of 100 kernels did not show any correlation.

abstract = "Genetic variability between inbred lines, way of inheritance and correlation connections between analyzed traits is present in this work. Between row number per cob and grain yield per plant medium-strong correlation (0.449) was found, between row number per cob and weight of 100 kernels was medium-strong but negative correlation, and grain yield vs. weight of 100 kernels did not show any correlation., U radu je utvrđivana genetička varijabilnost između ispitivanih inbred linija, zatim utvrđivan je način nasleđivanja i međusobna povezanost proučavanih osobina kukuruza.

AB - The approval and commercial use of genetically modified corn hybrids confirmed the appropriateness of this technology. Although the acreage of such hybrids had been increasing since 1996, the last year was unexpectedly marked by the fact that there were slightly fewer areas in herbicide-tolerant corn hybrids and more acreage in corn hybrids that are insect-resistant. Controversy over the production and use of genetically modified crops as well as their unknown impact on the environment have drawn a lot of public attention to transgenic crops, especially in Europe. Since the acceptance of GMO products depends on the consumers ultimate decision, biotech companies have to show more benefits to them. Use of biotech fruits will continue to increase with the acquisition of knowledge about the safety of GMO foods.
