Abstract
The approval and commercial use of genetically modified corn hybrids confirmed the appropriateness of this technology. Although the acreage of such hybrids had been increasing since 1996, the last year was unexpectedly marked by the fact that there were slightly fewer areas in herbicide-tolerant corn hybrids and more acreage in corn hybrids that are insect-resistant. Controversy over the production and use of genetically modified crops as well as their unknown impact on the environment have drawn a lot of public attention to transgenic crops, especially in Europe. Since the acceptance of GMO products depends on the consumers ultimate decision, biotech companies have to show more benefits to them. Use of biotech fruits will continue to increase with the acquisition of knowledge about the safety of GMO foods.
