AB - In Europe, the cultivation of sugar beet faces significant challenges due to the emergence of basses richesses syndrome (SBR) and rubbery taproot disease (RTD) which are associated with fastidious bacteria Candidatus Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus and Candidatus Phytoplasma solani, respectively. A comprehensive study conducted from 2018 to 2022 aimed to elucidate the prevalence and distribution of these pathogens in sugar beet in central Europe, focusing on the Pannonian Plain (particularly Serbia and Slovakia where RTD has been present in epidemic scales) and Germany.

AB - To address the growing demand for sugar, sugar beet production must be increased. However, conventional chemical fertilizers, essential for root growth and yield quality, are environmentally harmful due to factors like greenhouse gas emissions and organic pollution. To address this issue, we need to consider eco-friendly organic alternatives, such as FRASS, which is the residue from mealworm larval excrement. FRASS is rich in essential nutrients (ESN), including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). In our study, we aim to explore the potential of FRASS as an environmentally innovative fertilizer for sugar beet production, given the increasing popularity of mealworm farming. In a field experiment, we compared the efficacy of pre-sowing fertilization on two sugar beet varieties using three different models of two fertilizer concentrations (N:P:K 80:60:40 & N:P:K 40:30:20 ): pure mealworm FRASS, a combination of FRASS and mineral fertilizer, and pure mineral fertilizer (NPK). Our goal was to maintain the same level of ESN between NPK fertilizers and FRASS.

AB - Continuous advancements in plant breeding and the development of new hybrid varieties are occurring alongside the challenges posed by climate change. Consequently, there is an ongoing need to reassess agricultural practices. Fertilisation, particularly with nitrogen, plays an important part in plant production. Nitrogen is a critical element required in significant quantities for optimal crop growth, influencing the yield of various crops. However, it's important to acknowledge that nitrogen is a dynamic element, and substantial nitrogen reserves cannot be retained within the soil. Given the distinct requirements of sugar beet cultivation, where nitrogen not only impacts root yield but also profoundly influences root quality, it becomes important to improve fertilisation management. Therefore in our study we focused on assessing the effects of five different nitrogen fertiliser levels (40, 80, 120, 160, and 200 kg N/ha) on root yield and quality of two commercial sugar beet hybrids.

AB - Sugar beet is the second most important source for the sugar industry, particularly important in temperate climate zones of Central, West, and East Europe. However, its production has declined recently due to various factors of which the most important are subsidy cuts and the spread of various plant diseases. In the Pannonian Plain (Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia), a disease called rubbery taproot disease (RTD) has been observed for along time. The variability in RTD symptoms and the extent of damage it causes have made its detection quite challenging, often leading to misdiagnoses as other diseases. However, the identification of Candidatus Phytoplasma solani as the cause of RTD has resolved the issue of its diagnosis. The latest outbreak in Serbia has had a significant economic impact on sugar beet production, prompting an urgent response to aid the industry and growers. In our study, conducted during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, we assessed the susceptibility/tolerance of thirty registered sugar beet hybrids in Serbia, evaluating their impact on root yield and quality in naturally infected experimental fields.

AB - Reptalus quinquecostatus (Dufour, 1833) is one of several species from the planthopper family Cixiidae that are known as vectors of plant pathogenic bacteria that can cause severe agroeconomic losses. Records of this species in Serbia by Horváth, Tanasijević and Janković refer to Oliarus quinquecostatus Dufour, 1883 [sic]. The species was described as inhabiting meadows and grasslands and reported as caught on Salix sp., Ulmus sp., Quercus sp., and Malva sylvestris. Modern-day molecular identification of species, i.e. sequencing of cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene, revealed the presence of R. quinquecostatus nymphs in the rhizosphere of Koeleria macrantha (Poaceae family) in eastern Serbia. This cixiid has been found in Serbia on various crops affected by ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’: corn, grapevine, potato, and most recently, sugar beet. The occurrence on sugar beet was first reported in 2020 in northern Serbia when its population was aggregated on a boundary strip with several weeds: Convolvulus arvensis, Chenopodium album, Amaranthus retroflexus, Ambrosia artemisiifolia etc. During the 2021–2022 survey, the presence of R. quinquecostatus on sugar beet was confirmed on other localities in Serbia. Moreover, its populations were recorded on parsnip, tobacco and corn. Prunus spinosa and Crataegus sp. in microhabitats permeating arable land were also found preferable for R. quinquecostatus adults. Its several populations on different hosts were repeatedly sampled in June–July 2022. Populations on P. spinosa and Crataegus sp. were highly abundant and infected with ‘Ca. P. solani’, whereas in the agroecosystems, R. quinquecostatus is present in mixed population with R. panzeri, displaying minor precedence in the emergence of adults. Data on R. quinquecostatus plant preferences in Serbia support the polyphagy that has been previously reported throughout Europe. Since the genus Reptalus Emeljanov, 1971 has recently undergone nomenclatural and taxonomic revision, the use of the valid species name and proper morphological species identification, which in some cases should be supplemented with molecular tools, are crucial in biodiversity and insect pest research.

AB - Rubbery taproot disease (RTD) of sugar beet was recently associated with the plant pathogenic bacterium ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ (CaPsol) and reported throughout the Pannonian Plain with variations in severity. Tracing CaPsol epidemiological pathways was performed in the experimental sugar beet field in Rimski Šančevi (Serbia) in 2020–2021, where an RTD outbreak was recently recorded. A molecular epidemiology approach was applied to the study of three RTD occurrence scenarios: epidemic, non-epidemic and ‘absence of RTD’. As a result, Hyalesthes obsoletus ex Convolvulus arvensis was detected as a CaPsol vector to sugar beet, while two other cixiids were identified for the first time as vectors of the CaPsol-induced plant disease in crops: Reptalus quinquecostatus and R. cuspidatus. R. quinquecostatus was proposed culpable for the 2020 RTD epidemic outbreak in Rimski Šančevi when dSTOLg CaPsol strain predominated in the RTD-affected sugar beet, whereas R. cuspidatus had a negligible role in RTD occurrence and displayed ambiguous involvement in CaPsol epidemiology on a wider scale. The temporal discrepancy of the offset of CaPsol dissemination and disease occurrence is the main obstacle in predicting CaPsol-induced diseases. Predicting disease occurrence and severity can only be achieved by gaining a better understanding of CaPsol epidemiological pathways and insect vectors involved in disease outbreaks.

AB - Sugar beet is one of the most profitable crops in Serbia. The charcoal root rot is an emerging disease of sugar beet that significantly reduces yield and affects the economic viability of production. The objectives of this research were to determine the antagonist activity of selected Trichoderma harzianum isolates (T1 to T13) on two Macrophomina phaseolina isolates in vitro using a dual culture test and a volatile compounds test, as well as in vivo. The efficacy of these treatments was compared to two commercial biopesticides (Bacillomix® Original and Trifender Pro®) and one synthetic fungicide (Funomil 700 WG®). The strongest inhibition in the dual culture test was observed in the treatment with T. harzianum T2 against both tested M. phaseolina isolates. Also, the volatile compounds produced by isolates T2 and T12 exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect on M. phaseolina isolates (from 48.22 to 62.75%). Differences in efficacy were found not only between tested Trichoderma isolates, but also between M. phaseolina isolates used for inoculation which indicates different susceptibility of pathogen population to bioagent. The in vivo test confirmed the strong antagonistic effect of the T. harzianum T2 and T12 isolates. Bacillomix® Original, Trifender Pro® and Funomil® 700 WG did not express satisfactory effects in pathogen control.

AB - ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ (stolbur phytoplasma) is associated with rubbery taproot disease (RTD) of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), while Macrophomina phaseolina is considered the most important root rot pathogen of this plant in Serbia. The high prevalence of M. phaseolina root rot reported on sugar beet in Serbia, unmatched elsewhere in the world, coupled with the notorious tendency of RTD-affected sugar beet to rot, has prompted research into the relationship between the two diseases. This study investigates the correlation between the occurrence of sugar beet RTD and the presence of root rot fungal pathogens in a semi-field ‘Ca. P. solani’ transmission experiment with the cixiid vector Reptalus quinquecostatus (Dufour), in addition to naturally infected sugar beet in the open field. Our results showed that: (i) Reptalus quinquecostatus transmitted ‘Ca. P. solani’ to sugar beet which induced typical RTD root symptoms; (ii) Macrophomina phaseolina root rot was exclusively present in ‘Ca. P. solani’-infected sugar beet in both the semi-field experiment and naturally infected sugar beet; and that (iii) even under environmental conditions favorable to the pathogen, M. phaseolina did not infect sugar beet, unless the plants had been previously infected with phytoplasma.

AB - Plant viruses, and aphids as their vectors, are limiting factors in sugar beet production. Viral plant diseases are currently impossible to treat, but knowing the flight patterns of aphids can help reduce the number of potential virus vectors. Monitoring of aphid flight activities in sugar beet fields was done using yellow water traps from April to the end of November. During the two years of investigation, a total of 5 514 specimens from 75 different taxa were collected. All localities recorded the highest number of individuals at the end of May/beginning of June. This is the period when sugar beet develops intensively, so the risk of virus infection is the highest. The most numerous species were Aphis fabae Scopoli, Aphis spiraecola Patch., Phyllaphis fagi (L.), Myzus persicae (Sulzer), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), Sitobion avenae (Fabr.), Acyrthosiphon pisum (Haris) and Therioaphis trifolii (Monell). The most important vectors are A. fabae, A. spiraecola and M. persicae. Aphis fabae is a species that feeds on sugar beet and causes significant damage by feeding and its vector activity. Myzus persicae was the most abundant in autumn, A. spiraecola was present throughout the whole flight-monitoring period. Among the caught aphids, twelve species alien to Europe were collected.

AB - The “basses richesses” syndrome (SBR) and rubbery taproot disease (RTD) associated with ‘Candidatus Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus’ and ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani’, respectively are hampering the sugar beet production in Europe. A series of experiments shed light on the presence of these bacteria in sugar beet in central Europe - Pannonian plain (Serbia and Slovakia), with epidemic occurrences of RTD, and Germany. Only ‘Ca. P. solani’ was found in sugar beet in the Pannonian plain, while both pathogens were present in Germany. Reptalus quinquecostatus was identified as the insect vector responsible for the of the epidemic strain of ‘Ca. P. solani’ and thus for the epidemic occurrence of RTD. The RTD affected sugar beet is susceptible to charcoal root rot caused by Macrophomina phaseolina which exacerbates the losses associated to the phytoplasma presence. These results suggest that more attention should be given to phytoplasma infection in sugar beet in Europe.

AB - Several viruses have been described to infect sugar beet (Beta vulgaris var. saccharifera L.), but virus yellows disease is one of the most important diseases in many sugar beet growing areas. It is caused by four viruses in either single or mixed infection, including the poleroviruses beet western yellows virus (BWYV), beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV), and beet chlorosis virus (BChV) and a closterovirus, beet yellows virus (BYV) (Hossain et al. 2021; Stevens et al. 2005). In August 2019, five samples of sugar beet plants showing yellowing on interveinal leaf tissue were collected in a sugar beet crop in the Novi Sad locality (Vojvodina Province, Serbia). Double-antibody sandwich (DAS) ELISA commercial antisera (DSMZ, Braunschweig, Germany) were used to test the collected samples for the presence of the most common sugar beet viruses: beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), BWYV, BMYV, BChV, and BYV. Commercial positive and negative controls were included in each ELISA test. BYV was serologically detected in all sugar beet samples, but no other viruses tested were found.

AB - Crop losses caused by the plant pathogenic bacterium ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ (CaPsol) underscore the need to better understand its perplexing epidemiological pathways. Hyalesthes obsoletus (Hemiptera, Cixiidae) is a prominent CaPsol vector with three plant associations in Serbia (ex Urtica dioica/HobsUd; ex Convolvulus arvensis/HobsCa; ex Crepis foetida/HobsCf). Another cixiid planthopper, Reptalus quinquecostatus (Dufour), has been recently confirmed as a noteworthy CaPsol vector. A multi-test study assessed the relevance of H. obsoletus associations and R. quinquecostatus populations from Crataegus monogyna and Prunus spinosa in CaPsol occurrence in sugar beet, maize, and tobacco. Molecular typing of the CaPsol strains transmitted to test plants in experimental trials provided the first evidence of HobsUd transmitting CaPsol tuf-a type to sugar beet, HobsCa infecting maize and tobacco with tuf-b type, and HobsCf transmitting CaPsol tuf-b to maize. Affiliation of R. quinquecostatus with the specific CaPsol genotype, dSTOLg, was reaffirmed in this study. The possible involvement of R. quinquecostatus in maize redness disease and tobacco stolbur was suggested, given that this cixiid was identified as a vector of CaPsol to these crops. The obtained results indicate that the tested vectors pose a threat to cultivated plants in Serbia, underscoring the need to recognize their relevance in CaPsol disease occurrences.

AB - Two phloem-limited pathogens, ‘Candidatus Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus’ and ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’, threaten sugar beet production in France, Switzerland, and Germany. Previous studies of these pathogens in Germany had focused on its western and southern regions, leaving a knowledge gap about eastern Germany. Despite their importance, this study is the first to investigate phytoplasmas in sugar beet in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. A phytoplasma strain related to ‘Ca. P. solani’ is found predominant in Saxony-Anhalt, unlike in France, where ‘Ca. P. solani’ has a minor role compared with ‘Ca. A. phytopathogenicus’. The phytoplasma strain infecting sugar beet in Saxony-Anhalt was classified into a new subgroup designated as 16SrXII-P. The multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of nonribosomal genes of the novel phytoplasma strain showed that it is significantly different from the reference and all previously reported ‘Ca. P. solani’ strains including the strain from western Germany. Analyses of sugar beet samples from previous years confirmed the presence of the 16SrXII-P strain in sugar beet as early as 2020 and also in Bavaria in southern Germany. Based on 16S rDNA analysis, ‘Ca. A. phytopathogenicus’ in Saxony-Anhalt is identical to strains in sugar beet in other parts of Germany and France, as well as to a strain in potato from Germany. The presence and prevalence of two phytoplasmas in sugar beet in Germany suggest that more attention should be directed toward understanding phytoplasma infection in sugar beet in this country.

AB - Rubbery taproot disease (RTD) appearance and symptoms have been described in Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia more than 60 years ago. At that time disease symptoms were associated with abiotic factors (drought). Latest researches about RTD reveal that Candidatus Phytoplasma solani is the causing agent of the disease and the presence of the disease also in Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia. After declining of the plants, roots are prone to rotting due to the activity of saprobes. Symptoms and the progress of the disease differ depending on climatic conditions. The first symptoms usually start appearing by the end of July and beginning of August. In wet years yellowing of the oldest leaves and relatively slow progress of the beet deterioration can be observed on the edges of sugar beet fields. In dry years, because of the drought, oldest leaves are being discarded very fast and the first visible symptom of the disease is a loss of turgor in young leaves during the hottest part of the day. If dry conditions continue, all leaves become necrotic, which leads to the complete decline of the plant. Taproots of diseased plants wilt, become rubbery, and stay without any rot symptoms until complete plant decline. A yield loss in the same beet field varies spatially and is usually aggregated toward the edges. Epidemiological studies of the disease are in progress.

AB - Gumoza šećerne repe prvi put je u Srbiji primećena u srednjem Banatu i severnoj Bačkoj 1960-ih (Marić i sar. 1970).

AB - Lettuce is one of the most common types of leafy vegetables in human diet that is grown worldwide. Narrow and very small seeds make its sowing very difficult, requiring a lot of time and labour. Also, plants produced by manual sowing are often characterized by uneven germination. Those problems could be prevented by sowing pelleted seeds which require the development of adequate pelleting technology. Absence of quality lettuce seeds in the Serbian market results in large amounts of imported pelleted seeds every year. The aim of this study was to develop a domestic pelleting procedure and examine its effects on seeds quality parameters, in order to provide seeds to local farmers at a more affordable price compared to imported commercial pelleted seeds. Pelleted and non-pelleted seeds of the Panukia F1 hybrid were compared in several quality characteristics (1000 seed weight, germination energy, germination percentage, seedling length) in laboratory and greenhouse conditions. There was no loss in seed quality with the pelleting process, although the seed weight increased 12-19 times. Pelleted lettuce seeds had very high germination energy and seed germination (97-98%). In greenhouse conditions, non-pelleted seeds sprouted unevenly in relation to pelleted seeds. These results confirm the advantages of sowing pelleted seeds in terms of uniform germination and development of lettuce plants, primarily due to the precision of mechanical sowing. By offering domestic pelleting lettuce seeds to the growers, the production process would be significantly improved and accelerated with the reduction of manual labour, and therefore the overall production cost
Usko i veoma sitno seme otežava setvu i zahteva mnogo vremena i rada. Pilirano i nepilirano seme hibrida Panukia F1 poređeno je u nekoliko parametara kvaliteta (masa 1000 semena, energija klijanja, procenat klijavosti, dužina ponika) u laboratorijskim uslovima i proizvodnim uslovima u stakleniku. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju prednost setve piliranog semena u pogledu ujednačenijeg nicanja i razvoja biljaka, prvenstveno zbog preciznosti setve piliranog semena. Ponudom domaćeg piliranog semena zelene salate proizvođačima značajno bi se unapredio i ubrzao proces proizvodnje uz smanjenje ručnog rada, a samim tim i ukupnih troškova proizvodnje.

AB - Cikade (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha) predstavljaju diverzitetnu grupu fitofagnih insekata čije populacije naseljavaju prirodne i agroekosisteme. Nekolicina vrsta familije Cixiidae su poznate kao vektori fitoplazmi (‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’) i drugih fitopatogenih bakterija. ‘Ca.

AB - The North American aphid Rhopalosiphoninus latysiphon (Davidson, 1912) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) was found in Serbia for the first time. It is a polyphagous species, mainly feeding on roots, bulbs and tubers. This cryptic living species was detected in yellow water traps on fields of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad (Rimski Šančevi) during the monitoring of aphid flight activity in sugar beet. In total, three specimens were trapped in 2019 and 2020. The main morphological and biological characteristics of the species are given in the text.

Prisustvo fitopatogene bakterije ‘Ca. Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus’, uzrokovača bolesti repe “basses richesses” (SBR) u Francuskoj, Nemačkoj i Švajcarskoj, takođe je testirano i nije utvrđeno u analiziranim uzorcima.

AB - Rubbery taproot disease (RTD) of sugar beet was observed in Serbia for the first time in the 1960s. The disease was already described in neighboring Bulgaria and Romania at the time but it was associated with abiotic factors. In this study on RTD of sugar beet in its main growing area of Serbia, we provide evidence of the association between 'Candidatus Phytoplasma solani' (stolbur phytoplasma) infection and the occurrence of typical RTD symptomatology. 'Ca. P. solani' was identified by PCR and the sequence analyses of 16S ribosomal RNA, tuf, secY, and stamp genes. In contrast, the causative agent of the syndrome “basses richesses” of sugar beet-namely, 'Ca. Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus'-was not detected. Sequence analysis of the stolbur strain's tuf gene confirmed a previously reported and a new, distinct tuf stolbur genotype (named 'tuf d') that is prevalent in sugar beet. The sequence signatures of the tuf gene as well as the one of stamp both correlate with the epidemiological cycle and reservoir plant host. This study provides knowledge that, for the first time, enables the differentiation of stolbur strains associated with RTD of sugar beet from closely related strains, thereby providing necessary information for further epidemiological work seeking to identify insect vectors and reservoir plant hosts. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in hybrid susceptibility. Clarifying the etiology of RTD as a long-known and economically important disease is certainly the first step toward disease management in Serbia and neighboring countries.
