Climate change and its influence on occurrence of yellow rust in Serbia

AB  - There are challenges in monitoring the occurrence of rusts since population structure of wheat pathogens continuously change under selection pressures of agroecological conditions, resistant varieties and applied pesticides. Climate-change impacts on occurrence of yellow rust in Serbia were estimated in experiments involving efficacy testing for fungicides and breeding material resistance. The significant influence of climatic elements and varieties on disease index of yellow rust was confirmed and the most influencing were average temperatures in January (P = 0.000), variety (P = 0.000) and interaction between year and variety (P = 0.000). Furthermore, yield loss was significantly affected by the disease index of yellow rust (P = 0.000) and varieties (P = 0.000), but relationship of disease index and yield loss was not straightforward.

AB  - Twenty-four cultivars of winter wheat, representing most of the cultivars released in Serbia from 1955 to 2006, were used in the study. Wheat breeding was carried out through three cycles: first 1955-1962 (Banatka, Bankut 1205, San Pastore, Bezostaja 1, Libellula), second 1970-1990 (Zlatna dolina, Sava, Partizanka, Novosadska rana 2, Kragujevacka 56, Balkan, Yugoslavia, Skopljanka, Lasta, Evropa 90, Pobeda) and third 1992-2006 (Novosadska rana 5, Renesansa, Pesma, Ljiljana, Cipovka, Dragana, Simonida, NS 405). The study was carried out at the experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, Serbia.

A solution for economical and safe wheat protection from parasites

AB  - Sum of stem length, spike capacity and SAGR transformed values ( 1-5) on May 25 was
highly correlated to green leaf area disappearance (GLAD) of the varieties. Treatment at
06.03.2011 was most efficient but obvious followed by fungicide residua, while early one at
05.08.2012 was economically contra effective explained by reduced antagonistic facultative
parasites activity. The model for forecasting maximal attack intensity of parasites and grain yield
·losses was adequate in both years for the solution about fungicide treatment rent ability. The
economical and safe time for fungicide application were vice versed. Solution was found in
!growing varieties with SAGR value below 3 and sum of on GLAD influential factors at least 12.

AB  - lstraživanje je izvedeno s ciljem da se ispita međusobni uticaj na razvoj prouzrokovača prugavosti iii pegavosti lišća i lisne rđe, te efekti na prinos zrna jarog ječma. Četrnaest homozigotnih genotipova nekompletno otpornih iii osetljivih prema Puccinia hordei, posejano je 20.03.2005. godine simultano s kontrolom (K) u parcelice površine 7 m2 , isti udaljeni 2 m. Nakon dva prihranjivanja, s 25 kg azota (AN), radi karence u proizvodnji, nedozvoljeno tretiranje K je obavljeno 08.06.2005. fungicidom Folicur EC 250 u količini 5 cm 3 na 100 m2 . Maksimalan intenzitet zaraze (IF) s Puccinia hordei očitan na dva poslednja lista je bio 40, a s Pyrenophora spp. 50% od lisne mase. Pri tom intenzitetu zaraze simptomi poslednje pomenutih prouzrokovača bolesti (većinom P. teres) su na gornjim listovima bili slabije zastupljeni. IF 40 s P. hordei je bio povezan s maksimalno 20% Pyrenophora spp. kod jednog od dva genotipa.

AB  - The method for differing the wheat genotypes according to reaction type at seedling stage was not efficient in separating the pseudo resistant ones. The characters like low infection efficiency and prolonged latency period often were enough to decrease the leaf rust development enough to make another protection measures uneconomical. These characters were described as oligo or poly gene inherited. The method of estimating based on successive counting of pustules was of less capacity according to number of tested genotypes. That was uncorrelated with proposed breeding material amount. The formula for relating such estimated characters with intensity of the ·attack in field was described. In breeding process overcame genes previously expressed throw hypersensitive reactions could be reactivated in new completely resistant combinations or increase the level of the resistance. Such success after combining the incomplete resistant genotypes was also described.

AB  - The investigations of the interactions between pathogens could be interrupted by single strong development of each on the same plant. The adequate methods were not developed until nowadays. The protection by fungicides against particular one was also impossible. The results of the study focused on changes in respond of some genotypes to different powdery mildew isolates in the presence of leaf rust were published. In our investigation with aim to recognize the influence  of some another pathogens on the leaf rust severity, the axiom was that different genotypes with prolonged vegetation period equal in the respond to leaf rust cause prevalent race as seedlings at greenhouse will allow the similar level of the parasite development as adults.

AB  - Sorta Lovrin 25 i linija FR 81-19 uzete su kao izvori otpornosti prema Bumeria graminis tritici i Puccinia triticina na osnovu višegodišnjih testiranja u poljskim uslovima. Ukrštanja sa dve izuzetno osetljive sorte (Skopljanka i Barbee) prema obligatnim parazitima izvršena su 1990. godine. Kao rezultat, ovih ukrštanja, stvorene su NS RZL 225 i NS RZL 253 linije koje su posedovale odličnu otpornost ali loš tehnološki kvalitet i ostala agronomska svojstva. U 1997 godini novostvorene RZL linije ukrštene su sa, dve prinosne i raširene sorte u proizvodnji, Pesmom i Pobedom. Rezultat ovih ukrštanja su linije NS 3-4 731 i NS 3-5255 razvijene u oplemenjivačkom delu programa ozime pšenice u Naučnom institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo koje se odlikuju odličnom otpornošću prema obligatnim parazitima, visokim prinosom i odličnim tehnološkim kvalitetom.
AB  - Based on the results of the trials carried out under field conditions during several years the variety Lovrin 25 and line FR 81-19 were taken as a source of resistance to Blumeria graminis tritici and Puccinia triticina. Two varieties (Skopljanka and Barbee) particularly sensitive to obligate parasites were crossed in 1990. As a result of these crossings new lines NS RZL 225 and NS RZL 253 having excellent resistance but poor technological quality and other agronomical traits were developed. Newly developed RZL lines were crossed with two high yielding varieties Pesma and Pobeda widely used in production. AB  - Prva proučavanja populacije P. graminis tritici u Srbiji započeta su krajem 50-tih godina XX veka. U dosadašnjim proučavanjima razlikuju se dva perioda: prvi obuhvata identifikaciju fizioloških rasa pomoću standardnih diferencijalnih sorti, a drugi utvrđivanje biotipova korišćenjem izogenih linija pšenice. Dobijeni rezultati više autora pokazali su da je populacija P. graminis tritici u Srbiji složena, jer se sastoji iz većeg broja rasa i biotipova. Osim toga, ona je ispoljila i značajnu varijabilnost, jer se rasni sastav vremenom menjao.
AB  - The first investigations on the population of Puccinia graminis tritici in Serbia were carried out in the 1950s. In the past investigations two periods may be differentiated: identification of physiologic races based on standard differential varieties and biotypes establishment based on isogenic wheat lines. The results obtained by numerous authors showed that the Puccinia graminis tritici population in Serbia is composed of a great number of races and biotypes. In addition, the population showed considerable variability due to the changes of the race composition with time.

AB  - The hypersensitive resistant varieties at seedling stage in the greenhouse (around 20°C) were crossed
with partially resistant one Renesansa,. According to F2 simultaneous tests with Lr Nils (Tatcher) and parents,
Pesma and Selekta have the at least two same genes for the resistance to applied culture from monopustule
isolate in the race type 2 in the greenhouse at the seedling stage. They are not Lr 1 or some of Lr 2
multiple allele serial. At the field conditions in the F1, the difference between the progenies from the crosses
Pesma x Renesansa and Selekta x Renesansa lead to the conclusion that they are not completely same corresponding
to in the greenhouse at seedling stage of the F2 progenies testing result. The inheritance of the
resistance is tree hybrid (Pesma) or monohybrid (Anastasia) in the progenies from the crosses with Renesansa.
Last one could be from several reasons in the case of separate observation. According to presented
and previous investigation results, the Anastasia is different from Pesma and Selekta according the genetic
basis of the resistance. Renesansa have the one to the applied isolate, single at the seedling stage throw the
hypersensitivity not expressible gene, same as one of at least two in Anastasia. In the field conditions
Anastasia crossed with the Pesma and Selecta decrease the infection severity in F1 in comparison with F1
Pesma x Selecta.

AB  - The resistance to the Puccinia triticina is of the highest importance for the product quality because of the apperience time. Relative short filling period and early maturation is often eaven without rusting. In years for rust development expected higher wheat yields are also impossible without mentioned resistance. On the May 25th when the attack is usually around IO (modified Cobb scale by Melchers and Parker, 1922) on susceptible varieties and the progress in some years very quick, possibilities for the chemical reduction are poor because of carence. Even if the chemicals were applied, the benefit is not so predictable (Jerkovic, 1997). So if we have to have some resistance to parasites in Serbian wheat varieties it is to the leaf rust cause. Nowadays, the different types of the resistance to Puccinia triticina are present in most of the widespread varieties. Uncomplete resistance expressed throw low infection efficiency is prevalent. Only on few varieties, hypersensitivity appeared at the seedling stage (Pesma, Anastasia, Selekta).

AB  - Testirano je 905 različitih genotipova ozime i jare pšenice, prema prouzrokovaču fuzarioze klasa (Fusarium graminearum) tokom 1993 i 1994. godine, u poljskim uslovima veštačkom inokulacijom u različitim fenofazama razvoja zrna. Na osnovu stepena zaraženosti zrna, testirani genotipovi su svrstani u VI kategorija otpornosti. Najveći stepen zaraze bio je pri inokulaciji zrna u fenofazama 3 i 4. U ovim fenofazama visokootpornih genotipova (HR) bilo je 375 (61%), a osetljivih (S) i visokoosetljivih (HS) svega 39 (6%). Novosadske linije ozime pšenice NS 56/91 i NS 45/92 imaju visok stepen otpornosti prema F. graminearum.
AB  - The study of resistance different winter and spring wheat genotypes to the agent of FHB (Fusarium graminearum was conducted under field conditions according to artificial inoculation in different phenophases of grain development. According to the degree of grain infection, the studied genotypes were classified into VI resistance categories. The highest infection degree was with the grain inoculation in phenophases 3 and 4. In these phases, there were 375 (61 %) highly genotypes (HR), and only 39 (6%) susceptible (S) and highly susceptible (HS) genotypes. Resistance closest to Sumai3, Amigo and Frontana posses lines NS 56194 and 45/92.

The genotypes which show the low infection efficiency and longer latent period were crossed (in the Institute of field and vegetable crops) with aim to reach the higher level of the resistance at last complete. It is known that in Yugoslavia only genes Lr 9, 19 and 24 single provide the stable hypersensitive resistance to many isolates in greenhouse and to population in field for many years. They were never widespread in production. Complementary effect of the genes for the resistance is also well-known and used in these region. The further studies were done with aim to distinguish the pleiotropic from one way effects of the genes for different resistances (hypersensitive-specific and partial-nonspecific). The result are varieties with satisfactory level of the resistance to Puccinia recondita tritici (sometimes some of them occupied 20% of in the Yugoslavia by wheat covered area), for eight or more years, without cases of predictable and proved overcoming in particular region.

AB  - Uslovi za pripremu zemljišta i setvu strnina u 2000/01. godini bili su veoma nepovoljni. Dug bezkišni period i setva u suvo zemljište uticali su na jaču pojavu parazita semena i slabosti klijanaca. Veliki broj samoniklih biljaka i povoljne temperature pospešile su razvoj obligatnih parazita, pre svih prouzrokovača pepelnice. Ovako jak napad parazita zabeležen je sredinom decembra i početkom januara (fenofaza razvoja strnih zita 32-37), pa se postavilo pitanje opravdanosti hemijskog suzbijanja. Problem je predstavljao i kolebljivost dnevnih temperatura u periodu koji je dolazio, čime bi bila dovedena u pitanje efikasnost preparata. Zbog toga na većini parcela nije urađeno hemijsko suzbijanje prouzrokovača pepelnice i drugih parazita mada su intenziteti zaraze prelazili granicu štetnosti.

AB  - Osnovni preduslov za uspešnu selekciju na otpornost prema obligatnim parazitima je različitost roditelja po genima koji tu osobinu kontrolišu. Broj gena i njihove interakcije, bez obzira na vrstu otpomosti, od presudnog su značaja za trajnost ispoljavanja osobine. S ciljern stvaranja linija različitih po osnovi otpomosti prema Puccinia recondita tritici i Erysiphe graminis-tritici odabrane su dve linije kompletno otpome prema prouzrokovaču lisne rđe i pepelnice u stadijumu sejanaca (kontrolisani uslovi) i polju. Kao drugi roditelj u kombinacijama poslužila je sorta s određenim stepenom nekompletne otpomosti prema oba parazita, Valjevka.
AB  - Base for the successful breeding for the resistance to obligate parasites of wheat is difference between parents according to genes controling the characters. Number of genes and their interactions related to any type of the resistance are most important for the durability of the mentioned characters. In order to create new lines with different base of Puccinia recondita and Erysiphe graminis resistance, two completely resistant lines in the seedling stage (controlled conditions) and in the field conditions were chosen. The second parent was Valjevka, variety with determinated level of uncomplete resistance to both parasites.

AB  - In 1997, the Federal Varietal Commission approved the following winter wheat varieties developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad: Zlatka, Galija, Prva, Mina, Sreća, Selekta, Dobra, Super rana, Bajka and Senica. Applying various hybridization methods and using genetically divergent and highly intensive parents, it was succeeded in developing several varieties which combine high genetic yield potential, good to very good technological quality,  resistance to lodging, low temperatures and diseases, especially to leaf rust (Pucc. recondita tritici). The dwarf variety Zlatka and the semi-dwarf varieties Galija and Prva were the highest yielding varieties in the three-year trials of the Varietal Commission. The varieties Bajka, Sreća, Mina, Dobra and Senica were higher yielding than both standards (Jugoslavija and Partizanka) while Super rana and Selekta were higher yielding than one standard, Partizanka. Successful combinations of genes that control important characteristics, incorporated in the dwarf variety Zlatka and the semi-dwarf varieties Galija and Prva, make these new winter wheat genotypes an important asset for a cost-efficient and economic production at an increased level of intensity.

Effectiveness of wheat genes for stem rust resistance

AB  - The wheat stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis Pers. f. sp. tritici Erikss. et Henn., has been observed in many locations in Yugoslavia. It occurs frequently in hilly regions in which the vegetation period is longer. However, intensity of its attack is relatively low and epidemics have not been noticed for a long time. The use of resistant cultivars is the most effective, economical and environmentally safe means of control. The base for a successful selection of wheat for resistance to the agent of stem rust is the knowledge of host- parasite interaction. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of wheat genes for resistance to different pathotypes of stem rust in Yugoslavia. The most effective genes of wheat to stem rust resistance in Yugoslavia in 1995 and 1996 were Sr 9e (98.76-100%), Sr 11 (88.82-96.76%), Sr 26 (92.55-96.30%), Sr 29 (95.66-99.54%), Sr 31 (93.17-94.45%), Sr 32 (82.61-95.84%) and Sr 33 (99.08-99.38%).

The use of resistant cultivars is the most effective, economical and environmentally safe means of control. The base for a successful selection of wheat for resistance to the agent of stem rust is the knowledge of host- parasite interaction. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of wheat genes for resistance to different pathotypes of stem rust in Yugoslavia. The most effective genes of wheat to stem rust resistance in Yugoslavia in 1995 and 1996 were Sr 9e (98.76-100%), Sr 11 (88.82-96.76%), Sr 26 (92.55-96.30%), Sr 29 (95.66-99.54%), Sr 31 (93.17-94.45%), Sr 32 (82.61-95.84%) and Sr 33 (99.08-99.38%).",

AB  - U radu je prikazana otpornost novih linija ječma, koje su prijavljene Komisiji za priznavanje poljoprivrednog bilja, prema Puccinia hordei. Utvrđeno je da je većina ispitivanih linija osetljiva prema ovom parazitu, ali da postoje i otporne. Prosečan koeficijent infekcije u 1995. godini je bio veći kod jarih, a u 1996. godini kod ozimih linija.
AB  - The barley leaf rust, caused by biotrophic fungus Puccinia hordei Otth., is one of the most important disease in Yugoslavia. In this paper resistance of 14 winter and 12 spring barley new lines in J 995, and 18 winter and 16 spring lines in 1996 was investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that most of the barley lines were susceptible to leaf rust, but some of them were resistant. The mean coefficient of infection in 1995 were higher on spring and in 1996 on winter barley lines.

AB  - Ozima, vrlo rana i patuljasta sorta pšenice Prima stvorena je ukrštanjem genetički divergentnih i intenzivnih sorti i linija Tobary 66, Kavkaz, Nova Banatka, NS 3143, Rana niska i NS 3985/1 metodom sukcesivne hibridizacije. U sorti Prima uspešno su kombinovani geni odgovorni za visok genetički potencijal za prinos zrna, vrlo dobar tehnološki kvalitet, ranozrelost i otpornost prema poleganju, bolestima i niskim temperaturama. Za redukciju visine stabljike i ranozrelost korišćeni su geni Rht 2 i Ppd 1 iz Norin 10 (Tobary 66 i Rana niska) i Rht 1S iz Saitama 27 (NS 3985/1). Savezna komisija za priznavanje sorti registrovala je Primu 1995. godine.
AB  - Very early winter wheat variety Prima was released by the Federal Comission for Varietal Approval in 1995. It was developed by crossing genetically divergent and highly productive varieties Tobary 66, Kavkaz, Nova Banatka, NS.3143, Rana niska and NS.3985/1. The spike in white and smooth, compact and awnless, with 18-22 spikelets; the grain is witreous and red (Triticum aestivum L ssp. vulgare var. lutescens). Prima is a dwarf variety with the average strow height of about 73 cm, with very good resistance to lodging. It is very early variety with good resistance to winterkilling. Its resistance to leaf rust (Pucc. recondita tritici) is excellent, the resistance to stem rust (Pucc. graminis tritici) and powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis tritici) is good. Apsolute mass of 1000 grains is about 33 g, volumic mass of about 85 kg/hi. The variety is classified in the quality subgroup A2. The milling quality is excellent, the baking quality is very good to excellent. According to the indicators of technological quality Prima is classified in the II technologic group as an very good bread variety. The variety is very productive, with the genetic potential for grain yield above 11 t/ha and suitable for growing on fertile soils and intensive production conditions. Prima is a important genotype for profitable production at a high level of intensity. .

AB  - Oplemenjivanje pšenice, na otpornost prema parazitima, izdvaja se kao poseban deo iz više razloga: 1. Štete koje nastaju usled napada su znatno veće nego razlike po prinosu nenapadnutih postojećih sorti. 2. Otpornost prema parazitima nije stabilna a većinom ni dugotrajna, tako da može da dovede do eliminisanja sorte iz proizvodnje veoma brzo, što je nemoguće pratiti semenarstvom. 3. Postoji više veoma štetnih parazita pšenice za čiji su razvoj pogodni različiti uslovi spoljne sredine, te je velika verovatnoća da se svake godine bar jedan javi u jačem intenzitetu. 4. Sve agrotehničke mere i mera nege, koje se preduzimaju radi postizanja što viših prinosa, pogoduju razvoju obligatnih parazita. Posledica toga je smanjen efekat ulaganja i stabilni prinosi na nižem nivou. 5. Sorte zastupljene u proizvodnji, na velikjm površinama, ne smeju bili identične genetske baze za otpornost.

AB  - Since the early seventies, winter wheat varieties from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad have become dominant in Yugoslav production, covering 60-80% of the acreage in wheat. Several varieties, such as Novosadska rana 2, Balkan, Partizanka and Yugoslavia, were, and in some regions still are, the most important. Very often they appear as parents in combinations the progeny of which was used to create new varieties. Fortunately, certain new genotypes from the same cross as Europe, France, Italy (Talent x Novosadska rana 2) covered a large area (40- 50%) during the drought period of 1989-1993. when the development of Puccinia recondita f.sp. tritici was reduced. Those varieties, and Novosadska rana 2 for its part, were the cause of the 1994 epiphytotic. From that time on, their importance in production decreased in comparison with varieties with higher resistance levels.

AB  - In this paper resistance of nearly isogenic lines with genes Sr32, Sr33, Lr9, Lr21 and Lr22 derived from Ae. squarrosa and Ae. umbellulata is presented. The genes Sr32 and Sr33 showed good effectiveness to different pathotypes of wheat stem rust in seedling stage. But, in adult stage lines with this genes were moderately resistant to very susceptible in Kragujevac and Zajeear. The most effective was gene Lr9. In our population of wheat leaf rust there is no alleles of virulence to this gene. The lines with other two genes (Lr21 and Lr22) were susceptible in Novi Sad and moderately susceptible in Kragujevac. Studies showed that Aegilops spp. is very important source of Sr and Lr genes of resistance.
