AB - The sustainable production of agricultural commodities, such as vegetable proteins and oils, is currently facing the challenge of developing new cropping strategies more e fficient in terms of water, nutrients, and land, while being able to increase the supply of domestic feedstocks. Double cropping of camelina (Camelina sativa L.), sown in the autumn, with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) can be proposed as a sustainable way to produce in the same growing season and land, multiple feedstocks for both energy, feed and food uses. A preliminary trial was conducted in Novi Sad (Serbia) during the 2018/19 growing season to test: yield performance, oil content and 1000 seed mass of two early sunflower hybrids (NS Dukat and NS H 7749) sown just after the harvest of two camelina varieties (NS Slatka and NS Zlatka which average yield was 920 kg/ha). Sunflower hybrids were also grown in the monocropping system as control. Both sunflower hybrids had higher seed yields in the monocropping system (+24%), but when considering the total yield of the two crops in the double cropping seed yield resulted slightly higher (+1-3%) than that of sunflower in the monocropping system. Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

AB - The ambition of this study was to justify the possibility of wheat trait prediction using a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from a newly developed Plant-O-Meter sensor. Acquired data from Plant-O-Meter was matched with GreenSeeker’s, which was designated as a reference. The experiment was carried out in the field during the 2022 growing season at the long-term experimental field. The experimental design included five different winter wheat genotypes and 20 different NPK fertilizer treatments. The GreenSeeker sensor always gave out NDVI values that were higher than those of the Plant-O-Meter by, on average, 0.029 (6.36%). The Plant-O-Meter sensor recorded similar NDVI values (94% of the variation is explained, P<0.01). The Plant-O-Meter’s NDVIs had a higher CV for different wheat varieties and different sensing dates. For almost all varieties, GreenSeeker exceeded Plant-O-Meter in predicting yields for the early (March 21st) and late (June 6th) growing seasons. NDVIGreenSeeker data improved yield modeling performance by an average of 5.1% when compared to NDVIPlant-O-Meter; in terms of plant height prediction, NDVIGreenSeeker was 3% more accurate than NDVIPlant-O-Meter and no changes in spike length prediction were found. A compact, economical and user-friendly solution, the Plant-O-Meter, is straightforward to use in wheat breeding programs as well as mercantile wheat production.

AB - The goal of our research was to examine the competitive ability of selected soybean varieties and invasive weeds, and opportunity to select the most competitive soybean varieties based on their dry plant biomass. Field trials were conducted in 2020 and 2021 at location Novi Sad. Three varieties of soybeans with different morphological traits from the same maturity group (NS Apolo, Fortuna, NS Zmaj) and three very harmful and difficult to control invasive weeds (Abutilon theophrasti, Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Xanthium strumarium) were selected for the tests. The additive design with four replications were used. Soybean was sown at a density of 450,000 seeds ha‐1 and six rows per plot with inter‐row spacing of 50 cm. After soybean sowing, all weeds were sowed on the same time in four densities by hand (0.5, 1, 5 and 10 weeds per m‐1).

AB - Invazivni korovi Abutilon theophrasti, Ambrosia artemisiifolia i Xanthium strumarium, predstavljaju veliki izazov u proizvodnji soje i mogu značajno smanjiti prinos i profitabilnost ovog useva.

AB - A greenhouse study was conducted to test the effects of low herbicide dose exposure on different crops measuring visible damages, plant height, leaf area, and dry matter. Seven crops were tested: lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cv. Novosadska majska maslena, oil pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima Duch) cv. Olivija, oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) cv. NS Ras, pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. Kurtovska kapija, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) cv. ZP Laura, sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cv. NS Kruna, and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cv. Dunavski Rubin. Herbicide dicamba in the range of 0.14 to 1 155.6 g a.i. (active ingredient)/ha inhibited biomass, height, leaf area, and visual injury of all crops, while glyphosate doses from 0.48 to 3 840 g a.i./ha also reduced the growth of all tested species. A rate of 116 g a.i./ha mesotrione was needed to reach 80% visual injury in oilseed rape, while the same effects on lettuce only required 1.8 g a.i./ha of mesotrione. Tomato and oil pumpkin were also sensitive to low mesotrione doses, where only 1.3 g and 0.5 g a.i./ha of mesotrione was needed for 80% of biomass reduction, respectively. Lettuce was the most sensitive crop of all tested species; biomass was reduced by 80% by dicamba, glyphosate, mesotrione, and nicosulfuron at the low rates of 33 g a.i./ha, 19 g a.i./ha, 1.25 g a.i./ha, and 2.7 g a.i./ha, respectively. Among all herbicides, visible injuries were detected in dicamba at the lowest rates. Soybean was the most tolerant of glyphosate, mesotrione, and nicosulfuron. Based on the available literature and obtained results, herbicide off-target movement must be mitigated to maximise herbicide efficacy and decrease the negative influence on susceptible plants and the environment.

Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich
in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich
in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.",

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the hydrolates obtained as the by-products of the Thymus vulgaris essential oil steam distillation process. The bioassays, which were undertaken in order to determine the effect on germination and initial growth of seedlings of some cultivated and weed species, were performed under controlled conditions with different concentrations of the hydrolates. Seeds of Glycine max, Helianthus annuus, Zea mays, Triticum aestivum, Daucus carota subsp. sativus, Allium cepa, Medicago sativa, and Trifolium repens, and six weed species—Amaranthus retroflexus, Chenopodium album, Portulaca oleracea, Echinochloa crus-galli, Sorghum halepense, and Solanum nigrum—were treated with 10, 20, 50, and 100% T. vulgaris hydrolate solution. The obtained results showed that the T. vulgaris hydrolate had the least negative effect on the germination of cultivated species, such as soybean, sunflower and maize, whereas clover and alfalfa were the most sensitive. By comparison, all the tested weed species expressed high susceptibility. It can be concluded that the T. vulgaris hydrolate has an herbicidal effect, in addition to its potential as a biopesticide in terms of integrated weed management.

AB - Herbicide application has long been considered the most efficient weed control method in agricultural production worldwide. However, long-term use of agrochemicals has numerous negative effects on crops and the environment. Bearing in mind these negative impacts, the EU strategy for withdrawing many herbicides from use, and modern market demands for the production of healthy and safe food, there is a need for developing new effective, sustainable, and ecological weed control measures. To bring a fresh perspective on this topic, this paper aims to describe the most important non-chemical weed control strategies, including ecological integrated weed management (EIWM), limiting weed seed bank, site-specific weed management, mechanical weeding, mulching, crop competitiveness, intercropping, subsidiary crops, green manure, and bioherbicides

AB - Sunflower hybrids tolerant to some ALS-inhibiting herbicides have a dominant place in production. Specific genes are responsible for the trait of sunflower tolerance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides from imidazolinone group (CLHA-plus, Imisun) and tribenuron-methyl (Sures 1 and 2). Knowing the of hybrids resistant to these herbicides can help to make the right decisions regarding control of volunteer plants and avoiding possible damage that can be caused by drift of ALS-inhibiting herbicides to adjacent plants of susceptible hybrids or damage due to the use of a contaminated sprayer by ALS inhibitors. In connection with this, field trials were conducted in vicinity of Novi Sad (Serbia) with the aim to examine the sensitivity of five sunflower hybrids to the application of recommended field rates of 14 ALS-inihibiting herbicides. The selected hybrids were created in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, of which three hybrids are tolerant to imidazolinones 1) CLHA-Plus, homozygous, 2) CLHA-Plus/Imisun, heterozygous, 3) Imisun, homozygous, 3) tribenuron-tolerant hybrid Sures1/Sures2 and 5) a sensitive hybrid to ALS inhibiting herbicides. Selected herbicides (imazamox, nicosulfuron, tribenuron, metsulfuron, triflusulfuron, foramsulfuron, amidosulfuron + iodosulfuron, foramsulfuron + thiencarbazone, oxasulfuron, prosulfuron, tifensulfuron and tritosulfuron + florasulam) were applied in the 14-16 BBCH of sunflower growth stage.

AB - Halauxifen-methyl is a new herbicide and the only member of synthetic auxins that can be used in all sunflower hybrids. The most important sunflower weeds in Europe include members of the same family as sunflower, with typical representative such as di cult to control common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia). Relying mostly on ALS inhibitors in the last two decades, some weeds (including recently A. artemisiifolia) developed resistance to these herbicides and have a negative impact on the sustainability of the existing strategies in weed management. Due to its unique properties, such as exceptional effi cacy against some di cult to control weeds, halauxifen-methyl has potential to occupy a significant place in integrated weed management. During 2017-2019 in field trials in northern Serbia, the halauxifen-methyl based product Viballa was tested in conventional and tolerant sunflower to imidazolinones and tribenuron-methyl in order to examine the possibilities for control some economically important weeds, with special emphasis on A. artemisiifolia. Viballa (1 L·ha-1) was applied post-emergence in growth stages of 4-8 leaves of crop and weeds.

AB - When it comes to soil functions earthworms are considered important organisms in the soil helping to increase soil health and to improve soil’s physical and chemical properties. It is therefore fundamental to know how earthworms can affect maize growth, plant nutrition and crop yields. Management practices like soil tillage can alter earthworm abundance depending on tillage depth, intensity and timing. Currently, there is lack of information on earthworm’s abundance and their effects on arable soil in our agroecological conditions. Lumbricus terrestris can stabilize soil structure due to their burrowing activity and mucus secretion, but the impact of L. terrestris in different soil tillage systems is not yet fully understood and therefore the aim of this study was to elucidate these effects on soil structure in a long-term soil tillage experiment in Serbia.

U ogledima je ispitivana zajednička primena herbicida Equip (22,5 g/l foramsulfurona+22,5 g/l izoksadifen-etil) u količini 2 l/ha i Laudis (44 g/l tembotriona+22 g/l izoksadifen-etila) u količini 1,5 l/ha.

AB - The ongoing climate change, coupled with the transformations of cultivation practices and land use in sole crop production, may cause a significant decline in sunflower yield stability. Considering that the sunflower is the third oilseed in the world oilseed market, with 45 million tons of grain per year, and that it takes the fourth position in the vegetable oil market, the implementation of sustainable growing technology in sunflower production is a necessity. Considering the above, the goal of the research was to analyze and recommend sustainable sunflower production technology in intercropping systems. A four-year trial was conducted in Serbia’s agroecological conditions (45∘34′23.2'' N 19∘86′18.9'' E) using a split-plot design. Two oil-type hybrids and one confectionary-type hybrid were intercropped with common vetch, red clover, and alfalfa. Common vetch × sunflower intercropping resulted in the decrease in almost all sunflower traits. Moreover, sunflower × alfalfa intercropping proved to be the most appropriate. The yield of NS Gricko and Rimi PR were statistically on the same level with sole cropping, while alfalfa biomass had better results after alfalfa was intercropped with NS Gricko, as compared to sole cropping. In view of the prevailing belief that yields are more stable in intercropping than in sole cropping, further research is needed in this respect, in addition to further research of the time and method of sowing.
