AB - To overcome the different challenges to food security caused by a growing population andclimate change, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) breeders are creating novel cultivars that have thepotential to improve productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability. Genomic selection(GS) is an advanced approach that may accelerate the rate of genetic gain in breeding using genome-wide molecular markers. The accuracy of genomic selection can be affected by trait architectureand heritability, marker density, linkage disequilibrium, statistical models, and training set. Theselection of a minimal and optimal marker set with high prediction accuracy can lower genotypingcosts, computational time, and multicollinearity. Selective phenotyping could reduce the numberof genotypes tested in the field while preserving the genetic diversity of the initial population. Thisstudy aimed to evaluate different methods of selective genotyping and phenotyping on the accuracyof genomic prediction for soybean yield. The evaluation was performed on three populations:recombinant inbred lines, multifamily diverse lines, and germplasm collection. Strategies adoptedfor marker selection were as follows: SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) pruning, estimation ofmarker effects, randomly selected markers, and genome-wide association study. Reduction of thenumber of genotypes was performed by selecting a core set from the initial population based onmarker data, yet maintaining the original population’s genetic diversity. Prediction ability using allmarkers and genotypes was different among examined populations. The subsets obtained by themodel-based strategy can be considered the most suitable for marker selection for all populations. Theselective phenotyping based on makers in all cases had higher values of prediction ability comparedto minimal values of prediction ability of multiple cycles of random selection, with the highestvalues of prediction obtained using AN approach and 75% population size. The obtained resultsindicate that selective genotyping and phenotyping hold great potential and can be integrated astools for improving or retaining selection accuracy by reducing genotyping or phenotyping costs forgenomic selection.

AB - The most common mechanical damage to soybean in the agroecological conditions of Serbia occurs after the appearance of hail, floods or due to damage from wild animals and insects. In recent years, extreme temperatures accompanied by drought have been increasingly recorded during the summer months, as well as the appearance of hail, which has become frequent during the growing season of spring crops. The aim of this work was to determine the consequences and the extent of yield reduction if hail occurs in the generative stages of soybean development. The occurrence of hail in the R1 (beginning bloom) and R3 (beginning pod) stages of development in the form of plant damage was simulated. This paper will present the results of how three soybean varieties reacted after simulated hail damage in two stages of generative development and what the effects were on yield, height, number of fertile nodes, as well as percentage of plant regeneration. The trial was set up in 2020 as a two-factorial experiment in three replications. Three soybean varieties were sown in late April. In order to simulate hail damage, the plants were cut to a height of 15 cm to ensure at least two nodes and enable the regeneration of the plants. The stage of development of soybean, i.e. the moment of hail damage, had a direct impact on the yield, the number of regenerated plants, as well as the number of fertile nodes.

AB - Background: The effectiveness of soybean inoculants in field conditions may be improved through the joint application of rhizobia and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB). Plant nutrients may also contribute to the higher efficacy of microbial inoculants as well as the growth and development of plants. Methods: A field experiment was performed to evaluate the responses of the rhizomicrobiome and soybean to seed treatments with multiple bacterial strains (Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium and Azotobacter chroococcum), applied individually or in consortia, with and without nutrient complex (S, Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, B and Mo).

AB - Increased diversity of cultivated plant species has a large potential for solving environmental issues caused by modern agricultural production, such as erosion and carbon loss in the soil, nutrient leaching, water pollution and declined biodiversity. Plant breeding, as well as other agricultural areas of study, are primarily directed towards developing cultivars to be grown as a sole crop, and only rarely for intercropping. As the cost of agricultural inputs continue to rise, the direct influence of extreme weather changes become more pronounced, highlighting environmental impact of dominant agricultural systems. This drives increased activity in plant breeding within programs supporting so-called alternative agriculture become more active in plant breeding. Intercropping allows the possibility of simultaneously supporting productivity and stability in agricultural production and reaching sustainability goals.

Združeni usevi pružaju mogućnost da se istovremeno podrži produktivnost i stabilnost u poljoprivrednoj proizvodnji, a u isto vreme da se postignu ciljevi održivosti., Increased diversity of cultivated plant species has a large potential for solving environmental issues caused by modern agricultural production, such as erosion and carbon loss in the soil, nutrient leaching, water pollution and declined biodiversity. Intercropping allows the possibility of simultaneously supporting productivity and stability in agricultural production and reaching sustainability goals.",

AB - The accuracy of genomic selection can be affected by several factors including trait architecture and heritability, marker density, linkage disequilibrium between markers and trait loci, statistical models, training population size, composition, and population structure. The selection of a minimal and optimal marker set with high prediction accuracy as an alternative to reduce genotyping costs, computational time, and multicollinearity for the genomic selection is a challenging task. Furthermore, optimal training population size is mostly determined empirically, by random sampling a whole set of genotypes, which may not reflect the true relationships in the population and may lead to the loss of rare genotypes and alleles. Selective phenotyping could reduce the number of genotypes tested in the field while preserving the genetic diversity of the initial population. This study aimed to evaluate different methods of selective genotyping and phenotyping on the accuracy of genomic prediction for soybean yield.

AB - The creation of focused breeding programs for organic farming systems was encouraged by the expanding market for organic farming. Breeding efforts are being stimulated by the rising demand for soybean varieties that are appropriate for organic farming in order to better meet the unique needs of those involved in the organic value chain. Within the ECOBREED project, extensive phenotyping on 200 soybean genotypes is carried out across contrasting environments in three countries, i.e. Austria, Romania and Serbia, which will enable the identification of useful traits (variation) and the level of local adaptation of genotypes. The following traits are assessed: yield and yield supportive traits, crop growth related traits, grain quality traits, plant architecture. Multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) implemented for genotypes selection, based on multiple traits. Classical linear multi-trait selection indices are available, but multi-collinearity and arbitrary weighting coefficient selection may erode genetic gains while.

AB - Phenomic selection is a promising complement and alternative to genomic selection for improving breeding efficiency. The major advantage of using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to indirectly capture phenotypic variants and predict complex traits is its high-throughput and low cost. Using NIR spectra to predict individual performances in the context of breeding for yield remains relatively novel. Certain wavelengths of NIR light are absorbed by specific chemical bonds that constitute the components of tissues. The relative proportion of each of these bonds within the tissue quantitatively influence the nature of the absorbance or reflection of light at different wavenumbers. Phenomic selection was tested on 206 soybean genotypes, collecting yield and NIRS data. Spectra were obtained from different tissues, grains and dried, milled leaves, measuring absorbance in range 4000 – 10000 cm−1. RR-BLUP model was used for phenomic predictions, considering NIRS data instead of molecular.

AB - Soybean (Glycine max L. Merill) is a high‐value crop due to its high content of protein and oil, which contribute nutrients to both humans and animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the winter cover crops on soybean nutritional quality. For this purpose, near‐infrared spectroscopy was used, due it is an extremely potent tool in plant‐related field of research for analysis. It is commonly used to estimate characteristics of grain including protein, starch, and oil content. Based on reliable calibration models, the spectral characteristics of the examined sample are related to the content of the component of interest. After mulching of cover crop biomass and conservation tillage, two soybean varieties were sown (NS Mercury, 00 maturity group and NS Altis, 0 maturity group). The field trial was grown under conventional production in agroecological conditions of Southeastern Europe at two sites (Rimski Šančevi and Čurug locations) in 2021.

AB - In past few decades, soybean breeders in Europe have been successful in producing a large number of commercial varieties using conventional breeding methods, most of all single seed descent (SSD) method with various modifications. As a supplement to conventional breeding methods, number of breeding tools like high‐throughput phenotyping, marker assisted selection, genomic selection, and others, are used to speed up the breeding process. Low genetic diversity is a major obstacle to soybean improvement. Therefore, projects between Europe and China, centre of origin of soybean, that involve germplasm exchange are intensified in recent years. Utilization of wild soybean species, especially perennial ones, bears a huge, still unused potential for improving soybean breeding process. Increased demand for non‐GMO soybeans, led to intensifying of soybean research throughout Europe which resulted in the number of companies that offer commercial soybean varieties. The oldest and best‐known among them are Lidea from France, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Serbia, Agroscope from Switzerland, RAGT from France and a number of other companies which initiated soybean breeding programs later.

AB - Cover crops are being used as a tool to reflect agro-ecosystem services. Cover crops differ in the traits by which they capture resources and influence the local agro-ecosystem. The aim of the research was to examine the effects of the winter cover crops in soybean production through the analysis of yield in the two sustainable cultivation systems (organic and low input) during 2021. The experiments were set up according to the block system method with random plots in four replications at two locations Čurug and Rimski šančevi, Serbia. Winter cover crops were following: pure rye crop (R) and a mixture of peas and oats (P+O) (85:15), while the control treatment (C) was an area without cover crops. It was assumed that soybean will respond positively to the selected treatments, which resulted in an increase in grain yield. Yield and yield parameters positively reacted on mixture (P+O) as a pre crop.

AB - Omics techniques involve large-scale analyzes related to the totality of certain elements of living beings. Although these techniques are rapidly developing, such as genomics, transcriptomics and others, only a part of these techniques have found application in plant breeding. Genomics certainly represents a basic modern tool in genetic research, through various applications in applied research. One of the most significant uses of genomics in plant breeding is the creation of genomic prediction models, which allow one to select the best candidates for additional breeding work by accurately predicting the genetic potential of specific plants under specific production conditions using only genomic data. Although not a traditional omics technique, high-throughput phenotyping involves quick and automatic measurements of a variety of plant traits, including growth, blooming period, leaf area, and others. These data enable a thorough knowledge of how genes influence overall phenotypic variability, coupled with integration with genomic data.

AB - Soybean is ready for harvesting when plants reach full maturity and the grain moisture is 13%. Various factors can influence harvest delay, and that the harvest is done at a lower than optimal grain moisture. Harvesting with lower moisture content (below 11%), cause seed damages and the seed has significantly poorer quality. The extent to which a delayed harvest affects the yield and quality was shown in a one-year experiment. The trial was set up at the Rimski šančevi site with three soybean varieties (NS Atlas (0 MG), NS Apolo (I MG) and Rubin (II MG)) in three replications. Harvest start at optimal seed moisture (13%) and after that, harvest was delayed for 7 and 14 days. After the seventh day the moisture was in the range of 8.5 to 10%, and after the fourteenth day was up to 8.5%.

Leguminoze imaju izuzetan agrotehnički značaj u svim sistemima poljoprivredne proizvodnje zbog sposobnosti biološke fiksacije atmosferskog azota, što posebno dolazi do izražaja u organskoj poljoprivredi usled nemogućnosti primene mineralnih azotnih đubriva. Cilj ovog rada je predstavljanje trenutnog stanja proizvodnih površina u organskoj proizvodnji leguminoza u Republici Srbiji, zastupljenosti biljnih vrsta, potencijala azotofiksacije i preduslova daljeg širenja površina.

AB - Abundance of Halyomorpha halys (Stål), the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), and Nezara viridula (L.), the southern green stink bug (SGSB), after their introduction on the territory of Europe, has been constantly increasing. In order to assess potential damage, a set of trials was conducted in semi‐controlled, field conditions in isolation cages, 1 m in diameter and 1.8 m in height, during 2020 and 2021. Testing was done on five different soybean varieties that belong to 00‐III maturity groups (Fortuna, Romansa, Princeza, Sava and Senka). There were three types of treatments/cages, a control treatment without stink bugs (C), a treatment with BMSB specimens and a third treatment with SGSB specimens. In each isolation cage with stink bugs five specimens per plant were introduced. The results showed significant effects of stink bugs feeding on soybean plants. In 2020 the number of seeds per plant, average for all five varieties, was the highest in the C (118.9) while BMSB and SGSB treatments were with much less seeds (10.7 and 6.5 respectively).

AB - As a part of the ECOBREED project, farmer participatory trials for organic soybean production were set up in Serbia, Germany, Romania, Austria and Slovenia (seasons 2021 and 2022). By setting up trials direct with organic producers, it was enabled that farmers assess the adaptability of the soybean varieties for organic production in specific agro-ecological conditions at their farm locations. This is one practical tool that enables organic producers to contribute and to be involved in the process of creating new soybean varieties, especially in crops composite population (CCPs) observations together with breeders. ECOBREED farmer participatory trials for organic soybean comprised field testings of soybean varieties from three breeding institutions from Serbia, Austria and Romania (Serbia-Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Austria-Saatzucht Gleisdorf, Romania-NARDI-Funduela). The network of organic participatory farms was established in 2021 at 17 locations in 5 European countries.

AB - Legume‐supported cropping systems affect environmental, production and economic impacts. In Europe, legume production is still marginal with grain legumes covering less than 3% of arable land. A transition towards legume‐supported systems could contribute to a higher level of protein self‐sufficiency and lower environmental impacts of agriculture. Suitable approaches for designing legume‐supported cropping systems are required that go beyond the production of prescriptive solutions. We implemented an interactive research process with scientists and advisors in 16 study areas in nine European countries to understand, explore and develop cropping systems with a focus on soybean and other grain legumes. The results of 24 rotation comparisons showed that grain legume integration decreased N fertilizer use and nitrous oxide emissions (N2O) in more than 90% of the comparisons with reductions ranging from 6‐142 kg N ha‐1 and 1‐6 kg N2O ha‐1, respectively. In over 75% of the rotation comparisons, cropping systems with legumes had lower nitrate leaching.

AB - The intensive form of agricultural production often leads to disruption of physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil. Therefore, in recent years there has been an increasing focus on research and finding ways to preserve the soil with management practices that support soil conservation. The research was conducted on the experimental field of the Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad on Rimski Šančevi. The experiment was set up as a randomized block design. The winter cover crops consisted of the combined intercrops: Triticale (×Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus) and winter pea (Pisum sativum ssp. arvense L.) (T+P), solo winter fodder pea crop (Pisum sativum ssp. arvense L.) (P) and a control without winter cover crops (sole or mixtures)(Ø). The experiment with winter cover crops was divided into two blocks. In the first block, the winter cover crops were chopped and plowed, while treatments in the second block were mowed using a rotary mower and the fodder was removed for feeding ruminants.

AB - The obtained results indicate the possibility of weed control in organic intercropping production systems of carrots and onions with the application of corn gluten, together with the ecological assessment of habitat based on bioindicator values of weed species. A total of 29 weed taxons are present in the intercoped and pure crops of carrots and onions, grown without (CO) and with the application of corn gluten (CO-G). Although floristically uniformed, 24 taxons (CO) and 23 taxons (CO-G), the total weediness on the CO-G variants was 24% higher. The highest value of fresh weed biomass was recorded on the treatment of pure onion crop with gluten application (2844.85 g/m2), while the lowest value was recorded on the treatment of intercropped carrot and onion (1004.99 g/m2).

AB - Legume-supported cropping systems afect environmental, production, and economic impacts. In Europe, legume production is still marginal with grain legumes covering less than 3% of arable land. A transition towards legume-supported systems could contribute to a higher level of protein self-sufciency and lower environmental impacts of agriculture. Suitable approaches for designing legume-supported cropping systems are required that go beyond the production of prescriptive solutions. We applied the DEED framework with scientists and advisors in 17 study areas in nine European countries, enabling us to describe, explain, explore, and redesign cropping systems. The results of 31 rotation comparisons showed that legume integration decreased N fertilizer use and nitrous oxide emissions (N2O) in more than 90% of the comparisons with reductions ranging from 6 to 142 kg N ha−1 and from 1 to 6 kg N2O ha−1, respectively. In over 75% of the 24 arable cropping system comparisons, rotations with legumes had lower nitrate leaching and higher protein yield per hectare. The assessment of above-ground biodiversity showed no considerable diference between crop rotations with and without legumes in most comparisons. Energy yields were lower in legume-supported systems in more than 90% of all comparisons. Feasibility and adaptation needs of legume systems were discussed in joint workshops and economic criteria were highlighted as particularly important, refecting fndings from the rotation comparisons in which 63% of the arable systems with legumes had lower standard gross margins. The DEED framework enabled us to keep close contact with the engaged research-farmer networks. Here, we demonstrate that redesigning legume-supported cropping systems through a process of close stakeholder interactions provides benefts compared to traditional methods and that a large-scale application in diverse study areas is feasible and needed to support the transition to legume-supported farming in Europe.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cover crops and interactions on yield and yield components of maize in the semi arid conditions. Research was carried out in the production years 2020 at the Rimski Šančevi experimental station of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The winter cover crops consisted of the combined intercrops: winter pea (Pisum sativum ssp. arvense L.) + triticale (Triticosecale) (PT) and single-species cover crops winter pea (P) and control without cover crops (C), all with nitrogen fertilization 50 kg ha-1 (N50) and without the use of fertilizer (N0). The sowing of winter cover crops was carried out in autumn in the first decade of November, and their mulching and plowing was done in the last week of May. After plowing and soil preparation, maize (NS4051) was sown in the first decade of Jun and harvested in October. The statistical significance (p<0.05) was found between different variants regarding the use of cover crops. The highest yield was achieved in a mixture of PT (N0) 8.54 t ha-1. The use of cover crops as green manure has a positive impact on the productive properties of maize with a reduction in inputs and possible lower production costs.

AB - Due to the rising demand for organic food products and increased availability of organic products, global production of organically grown crops has increased. In 2020, organic agriculture was practised in 187 countries worldwide, on 72.3 million ha of agricultural land by at least 3.1 million farmers. The area of organically managed soybean worldwide was 644 323 ha. Soybean production is of great importance since the soybean grain is used in various industries, including human as well as animal nutrition and pharmaceutical production. Soybean has a special place in organic cultivation because it brings different agronomic benefits to farmers and it is considered a niche product for feed and food use. Furthermore, soybean is primarily a climate-smart crop that conserves soil fertility for increased productivity of other important field crops, and its place in organic production is very valuable. The importance of soybean comes from the exceptionally favorable grain chemical composition (≈40% protein, ≈20% lipids). Soybeans are relatively easy to produce under organic conditions due to available production technology. One of the most important tasks for farmer is to select soybean varieties for specific production conditions.

AB - Organic farming is practiced on over 72 million hectares of agricultural land worldwide. Soybean (Glycine max) is cultivated organically on 644 323 ha. Each year, the selection of the right soybean varieties for their fields is one of the most challenging management decisions that farmers must undertake. Soybean breeding companies continuously offer varieties from their breeding programs that can meet the various needs of farmers, industry and consumers. The growing demand for soybean varieties suitable for organic farming is fostering breeding activities to better fulfil the specific requirements of the organic value chain participants. Within the ECOBREED project, characterisation of a soybean working collection is carried out across contrasting environments in three countries, i.e. Austria, Romania and Serbia, which will enable the identification of useful traits (variation) and the level of local adaptation of genotypes. The following traits are assessed: yield and yield components, crop growth related traits, grain quality traits.
