Tokom sezone, bilo je izuzetno toplih jesenjih i zimskih perioda, umerenih temperatura u prolećnom delu vegetacije i obilnih padavina u fazama formiranja, nalivanja i sazrevanja zrna.

AB - Crop breeding is a continuous process aimed at increasing yields and improving crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recently, frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions have led to the fact that classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions and a timely response to new challenges in agricultural production. With all this in mind, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established the Centre of Excellence for Innovations in the Breeding of Climate-tolerant Plants - Climate Crops with the aim of introducing and applying new breeding techniques (NBT), along with efficient phenotyping platforms in crop breeding programs in IFVCNS. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.

AB - The increasing pressure of climate change, reduction of genetic diversity on farms and constant decrease in arable land present the most challenging aspects for today's crop production. Reintroduction of diverse adapted local varieties and underutilised landraces of wheat, potentially tolerant to different biotic and abiotic stresses, could ensure stable yield under low-input agriculture. The uncharacterized local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat from Serbia and Bulgaria, were collected from small-scale farms and gene banks within a project funded by the Benefit-Sharing Fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, aiming to evaluate their genetic diversity. As a part of this comprehensive project, the selected material was evaluated using different molecular marker techniques. The level of genetic diversity and relatedness of a set of 90 Serbian and Bulgarian local varieties and landraces of bread and durum wheat was assessed using microsatellite molecular markers and 25K wheat Infinium Array. The total of 141 alleles was detected at 20 microsatellite loci with an average number of 7.05 alleles per locus. The PIC value varied from 0.344 to 0.837.

AB - Plant genetic resources are a valuable, but largely unexplored pool of
potentialy useful traits that could be useful for crop improvement for more
resilience to fluctuating climates. Traditional varieties and landraces are, in
general, well adapted to local environments, to but usually mature late and have
low yield, one of the most valued trait among both breeders and farmers. The
aim of this study was to evalute 30 local Serbian landraces and obsolete
varieties for yield potential, earliness (as flowering time), and ability to
remobilize nutitrients to the grain, and to determine their correlations with
NDVI, flag leaf area and chlorophyll content. A two-year field trial with 5 m2
plots in three replications was performed at the experimental station at Rimski
Šančevi, Novi Sad, Serbia. The yield, dry matter remobilisation efficiency
(DMRE) and contribution (DMRC) were in positive correlations with NDVI,
flag leaf area and chlorophyll content. Flowering time was negetively
correlated to all other traits. The genotypes were separated as low (9 t/ha).
Despite the negative correlation between the flowering time and other traits, a
several genotypes (landrace L285, varieties Novosadska crvenka, Hibrid 0.13
and Partizanka) showed earliness (130-133 days), high yields (9.11-9.88 t/ha),
and high or medium DMRE (0.36-0.44) and DMRC (0.55-0.62) and harvest
indices (0.55-0.60). Those varieties also had medium or, in case of L285, low
flag leaf areas. The results indicated that this is a interesting potential breeding

abstract = "Plant genetic resources are a valuable, but largely unexplored pool of
potentialy useful traits that could be useful for crop improvement for more
resilience to fluctuating climates.
The results indicated that this is a interesting potential breeding
material being worthwhile for further investigations.",

AB - Plant genetic resources harbor for breeders valuable yet often unexplored traits that have the potential to enhance crop resilience in the face of fluctuating climates. Old local varieties and landraces possess adaptations to local environments, but are typically characterized by late maturity and relatively low yields. Since earliness and high yields are highly valued both by breeders and farmers, this study aimed to screen traditional Serbian landraces and varieties for the high yield potential, early maturing, and better nutrient remobilization efficiency. An experimental trial with the randomized complete block design in three replications was conducted at the Rimski šančevi, Serbia during 2020/21 and 2021/2022. In addition, the correlation between these traits and vegetation index, flag leaf area, and chlorophyll content were tested. Yield, dry matter remobilization efficiency, and dry matter remobilization contribution exhibited positive correlations with normalized difference vegetation index, flag leaf area, and chlorophyll content, while flowering time showed negative correlations with all other traits. Nevertheless, one landrace and three traditional varieties out of 30 evaluated germplasm displayed early flowering, high yield, and medium to high nutrient remobilization traits. Our results suggest that these genotypes represent interesting potential breeding materials warranting further investigation.

AB - Agriculture is one of the “victims” of climate change and one of the most severely affected sectors. It has become evident that as the climate changes, crop production strategies must change as well, including primarily adaptations through breeding and crop management. In the future, it is expected that integrative approaches that combine -omics technologies by using bioinformatic tools will facilitate the identification of target genes and markers for complex traits and facilitate crop adaptation to the changing environment. Within its activities, Twinning project CROPINNO will implement at and validate different phenotyping and multi-omics tools in breeding for improved stress resilience. Sunflower is chosen as a model crop for validation of different tools and approaches since it is considered as potential model crop for adaptation to a changing environment. Activities within CROPINNO are aimed at: i) pre-screening sunflower genotypes from IFVCNS collection using for biotic and abiotic stress resilience using different phenotyping methods; ii) study of effects of drought on sunflower plants at chromatin and transcriptional level; iii) performing whole genome SNP analysis in order to develop SNP-based markers for drought stress resilience; iv) performing integrated data analysis and comparative bioinformatics for drought responses in order to unveil possible direct correlations between stress-induced genes transcriptional variation and histone modification levels and design of networks of candidate genes for sunflower drought tolerance. Models, tools and know-how developed on sunflower will be transferred and implemented in the breeding programs of other main field crops at IFVCNS and Western Balkans region.

AB - Sunflower breeding and selection are continual processes designed to increase its yield and improve the resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding. However, classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions for tackling frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions. As response to shortcomings of classical breeding, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established Center of Excellence for Innovations in Breeding of Climate-Resilient Crops – Climate Crops aimed at introduction and application of new techniques such as (epi)genomic selection and genome editing, along with e fficient phenotyping platforms, for more effi cient trait introduction. Climate Crops aims to step up and stimulate excellence and innovation capacity of IFVCNS in sunflower improvement and enhance its ability to respond and create innovative solutions for the challenges that sunflower production, and agriculture as a whole face - climate changes and need to feed the increasing population.

AB - An increase in the production and consumption of spelt products can be associated with positive effects on human health, which are attributed to bioactive compounds present in the grain. The basic success of spelt wheat in organic farming might be explained by the fact that spelt wheat belongs to the group of hulled wheat where the presence of a husk protects the seed from abiotic and biotic stress factors, thus demanding less chemical protection. The goal of this study was to investigate the variations in the bioactive compound (alkylresorcinol, arabinoxylan, β-glucan), protein, starch and fructan content of bread and spelt wheat under different farming systems (conventional and organic). The results showed higher protein and alkylresorcinol but lower fructan content in spelt wheat. Organic spelt had significantly higher starch, fiber and alkylresorcinol content but lower β-glucan and protein content than conventionally grown spelt. The spelt variety ‘Oberkulmer-Rotkorn’ was characterized by the highest values for the majority of analyzed traits under both farming systems. Overall, the environmental conditions (Hungary and Serbia), farming systems (conventional and organic) and wheat species (bread and spelt) contributed to the variations of the compositional traits in different manners.

AB - Wheat and other cereals are important sources of dietary fibre and antioxidants. Most of the bioactive components are found in the outer layers and aleurone layers of the seed, but also the flour contains some. The major dietary fibre components in the wheat grain are cell wall polysaccharides such as arabinoxylan and β-glucan, which account for about 70% and 20%, respectively, of the total cell wall polysaccharides in the starchy endosperm. Barley and oats are rich in β-glucan, while wheat and rye are richer in arabinoxylan. Arabinoxylan has two forms, i.e. water-soluble (WE) and insoluble (WU) fractions, which differ in their health benefits. Antioxidants (e.g., alkylresorcinol) delay or inhibit oxidation processes. Alkylresorcinol is formed in the organism and acts against free radicals, which are responsible for the cell degradation.

AB - Barley breeding program in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad has a very long tradition. The great effort focused on selecting and creating varieties with high yielding potential and good malting quality. This study aimed to analyse phenotypic variation during the historical period. The studied material consisted of 90 representative barley genotypes, which varied in a row number and growing types (6-rowed winter, 2-rowed winter and spring types) encompassing three different breeding periods. Field experiments were conducted in three growing seasons using a randomised complete block design with three replications. Eight important agronomic traits were evaluated during this period. The ANOVA showed that most of the analysed traits varied significantly between seasons, row types, and breeding periods. Comparison of three groups with different row types revealed earlier heading and flowering time of two-rowed than six-rowed types of winter barley.

AB - Different wheat germplasm exploited in breeding programmes in continental Europe and Pannonian region reflects specific breeding requirements in distinctive environmental conditions. In order to evaluate a potential of locally bred and grown wheat varieties from central Europe, as a source of new genetic variability in a wheat breeding programme in Serbia, 42 elite winter wheat representatives of two different European breeding pools were assessed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVNC), Novi Sad, Serbia. A field trial with 20 elite wheat varieties was set at the IFVNC in a randomized complete block design with three replications during three seasons (2016/2017, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019). The genotypes were phenotyped for heading and flowering time, plant height, ear length, number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, thousand grain weight, yield, protein content, chlorophyll content index and prevalent wheat diseases. In addition, the varieties were genotyped with microsatellite markers.

AB - Heading time significantly contributes to wheat adaptability and yield allowing drought escape during the critical developmental stages. Besides, chlorophyll content has been used to assess the level of drought stress and to
predict yield. Our aim was to determine correlations among heading time, chlorophyll content and grain yield of 100 wheat genotypes from Europe, Asia and America. A field trial was performed at the Institute of Field and
Vegetable Crops, Serbia using a completely randomised block design with three replications during two seasons. The relative chlorophyll index (CCI) was measured with a portable chlorophyll metre. Days to heading were
calculated from January 1 to the date when the first spikelet was visible on 50% of the ears. Grain yield was determined at maturity from 5 m2 plots and calculated at 10% moisture.

AB - Plant height and heading time are important agronomic traits that significantly contributed to the improvement of wheat adaptability and yield. The aim of this study was to analyse genetic diversity of a collection of wheat species, originating from 20 countries, based on the microsatellite loci associated with the previously mapped quantitative trait loci of plant height and heading time, to estimate potential of microsatellites to detect polymorphism in different wheat species and reveal allelic patterns in relation to the geographical origin and to evaluate the level of phenotypic diversity. The principal coordinate analysis distinguished wheat genotypes by their origin and ploidy level. Wheat varieties from America, South and Southeast Europe, and West and Central Europe had the highest molecular diversity, as was evidenced by higher number of alleles, number of group-specific alleles, Shannon's information index and gene diversity. The Nei’s genetic identity indicated genetic similarity of geographically distinct groups, such as South and Southeast Europe and Russian (0.901) and South and Southeast Europe and American genotypes (0.638). The significant differences in plant height and heading time among different wheat groups were observed, while the differences in means among three different growing seasons and the group by season interactions were significant only for heading time. The evaluated collection with high observed level of both molecular and phenotypic diversity for plant height and heading time may be a valuable source of variation for wheat breeders to fine adjust these traits in order to achieve better agronomic performance in certain local environments.
pšenice južne i jugoistočne Evrope i Rusije (0.901) i grupa južne i jugoistočne Evrope i Amerike
(0.638). Visok stepen diverziteta visine i vremena klasanja u ocenjenoj kolekciji pšenice
predstavlja vredan izvor varijabilnosti za fino podešavanje ovih osobina u oplemenjivanju
pšenice u cilju postizanja boljih prinosa u određenim agroekonomskim uslovima.

AB - The unique rheological properties of bread wheat dough and the breadmaking quality of its flour are the main factors responsible for the global distribution and utilization of wheat. Recently, interest in the production and expansion of spelt wheat has been boosted due to its significance in the production of healthy food, mostly originated from organic production. The aim of this study was to examine and compare quality parameters (gluten content, Zeleny sedimentation volume, farinograph dough properties), protein content and composition (by the Dumas method, Size Exclusion (SE) and Reversed Phase (RP) High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analyses) of five bread and five spelt wheat varieties grown under conventional and organic production in Hungary and under conventional production in Serbia. Most of the analyzed traits showed significant differences between varieties, wheat species and growing sites. Total protein content was significantly higher in spelt than in bread wheat and under conventional than under organic production. In comparison to spelt, bread wheat showed better breadmaking quality, characterized by a higher amount of glutenins (in particular high molecular weight glutenin subunits) and unextractable polymeric proteins. The proportion of the gliadins was also found to be different under conventional and organic systems. Spelt Ostro and Oberkulmer-Rotkorn and bread wheat varieties Balkan, Estevan and Pobeda proved suitable for low input and organic systems.

AB - Developing wheat able to sustainably produce high yields when grown under biotic/abiotic stresses is an important goal, in order to obtain food security in the face of ever-increasing human population and unpredictable global climatic conditions. However, random mutagenesis or genetic recombination as conventional ways for wheat improvement, are time-consuming and cannot keep pace with increasing food demands. Targeted genome editing (GE) technologies, like zinc-finger nucleases, transcription activator-like effector nuclease, and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/(CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9)) have been successfully used in editing wheat genome to get heritable variations for creating diversity and precision breeding. The tetraploid durum wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L.) and the hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are the most widely cultivated types, both with large genomes, developed as a consequence of ancient hybridization events between ancestral progenitors.

abstract = "Developing wheat able to sustainably produce high yields when grown under biotic/abiotic stresses is an important goal, in order to obtain food security in the face of ever-increasing human population and unpredictable global climatic conditions. The tetraploid durum wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L.) and the hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) are the most widely cultivated types, both with large genomes, developed as a consequence of ancient hybridization events between ancestral progenitors.",

AB - The difference in the composition of the high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) is related to the changes in dough strength and bread wheat quality. Information about changes in the HMW-GS during the different breeding periods are valuable for adjustment of wheat quality breeding activities. Therefore, a historical set of previously and currently widely grown bread wheat cultivars was used in this study to determine HMW-GS subunits composition. Also, the standard system of designating glutenin loci, alleles and glutenin subunits was applied enabling further calculation of the HMW-GS Glu score. Results from this study showed that the composition of HMW-GS varied between wheat cultivars, period of cultivars release and country of origin.
