AB - Wheat grain quality has in the focus of wheat breeders worldwide, besides breeding for yield, aiming at production of the best possible input for the processing industry. Twenty-five winter wheat varieties were studied to assess the progress of breeding for wheat quality in the last 60 years. The study included varieties released in different years representing all the various periods in Serbian wheat breeding. Only varieties that played a major role in Serbian wheat production were selected for this four-year trial (2010-2013) carried out at the Rimski Šančevi site near the city of Novi Sad, Serbia.

AB - Partial resistance to powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici) of 20 winter wheat varieties and a susceptible control variety Barbee was tested under controlled conditions. To asses the varieties for partial resistance, latent period (LP 50) and infection frequency (number of colonies per unit leaf area) were used. The variety Dragana showed the highest degree of partial resistance that involved a long latent period and low infection frequency. The varieties Angelina, Barbara and NS 27 /03 had a somewhat shorter LP 50, but a similar infection frequency; therefore, it seems likely that they also possess a high degree of partial resistance. Significantly high negative correlations were found between LP 50 and infection frequency (r= - 0.755).

AB - To avoid soil pollution caused by field trials for herbicide tolerance of wheat genotypes, an alternative in vitro lest was created and analyzed in this study. For validation of in vitro results, a comparative in situ test was conducted in a greenhouse. Four winter wheat cultivars (Renesansa, Stepa, Proteinka and Pesma) and three herbicide (tribenuron) concentrations (I-18.75 mgl-1, II- 37.50 mgl-1, III- 56.25 mgl-1) were used in both tests. Zygotic embryo culture was used as the method for in vitro testing. Since different parameters were analyzed in the in vitro and in situ experiments, only the final conclusions about herbicide tolerance of different genotypes were compared. Tribenuron-methyl had no significant effect on callus fresh weight only in cv. Proteinka. Similarly, the in situ experiment showed that tribenuron-methyl had no significant effect on plant height and number of kernels per spike in the same cultivar (cv. Proteinka), while the highest concentration of tribenuron-methyl caused significant decreases of these traits in the other cultivars. This compatibility of results from different tests can be considered as a proof of validity of in vitro test, which is more ecologically friendly than field trials.

AB - The progress achieved in wheat breeding is analyzed in the function of food production as well as the possibility of further work on increasing the yield and quality, resistance to diseases and more economical usage of mineral nutrients. The great success is achieved in the increase of genetic potential for, grain yield and quality improvement, while in nutritive values the slight improvement is accomplished. In the program of creating the new wheat cultivars it was constantly worked on including the genes for resistance against the main pathogenic organisms attacking the wheat where the cultivars of high degree of genetic resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia recondita) and powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) were produced. During the last years the greatest attention is paid to breeding of the cultivars having the more strong ability to use mineral nutrition from soil and using it more economically for grain production.

AB - Vrlo prinosna, rana sorta ozime pšenice Dična stvorena je metodom sukcesivne hibridizacije genetički divergentnih i intenzivnih sorti Novosadske rane 1, Tise, Nove Banatke i Mačvanke 1.
AB - Dična is an early and high yielding variety which was released by Federal Comission for Varietal Approval in 1992. It was developed by crossing genetically divergent and bigly productive parents Novosadska rana 1, Tisa, Nova Banatka and Mačvanka 1. The spike is white and smooth, medium compact, awnless, with 19-23 spikelets. The grain is vitreous and dark red (Triticum aestivum L. ssp. vulgare varr. lutescens).
