AB - The aim of this study was to determine the effects of three different inoculation methods with selected Azotobacter chroococcum strains on productive and technological traits of sugar beet, as well as on the total number of microorganisms and azotobacter in rhizosphere. The results of this two-year study showed that effectiveness of the tested inoculation methods in increasing root yield and sugar content varies greatly, depending on year and azotobacter strains. Effectiveness of inoculation methods was not largely impacted by year on granulated sugar. Achieved granulated sugar yield was significantly higher by using pre-sowing azotobacter application, than by using seed inoculation. A significantly increased number of microorganisms in sugar beet rhizosphere was determined, not only by using pre-sowing azotobacter application but also by using sugar beet seed inoculation. Pre-sowing azotobacter application and inter-row cultivation both caused an equal increase in the number of these bacteria in sugar beet rhizosphere (42.2% and 46.9%). Use of sugar beet seed inoculation caused an increase of 33.7% in the number of azotobacter. In order to achieve higher effectiveness in applying azotobacter on productive and technological traits of sugar beet, and considering determined interaction between a certain year, an inoculation method and a strain, it is necessary for future research to focus on determining efficiency of these strains when they are in a mixture.

AB - In this study we analyzed 10 monogerm and 10 multigerm sugar beet genotypes from the collections of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The appearance of sugar beet root surface was evaluated as a property that has an impact on the soil removal and root washing in the sugar factory. The genotypes were tested with nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis's test and cluster analysis as a method of multivariate analysis. Based on these results, genotype 12 had the lowest values for the root surface (the least furrow of the root), which will further be used in sugar beet breeding programs.

AB - During the seed crop growing there can be also problems with uncontrolled pollination if in the previous years there was seed shedding during the harvest, which can cause growth and flowering of diploid, triploid and tetraploid plants and that can present serious problem for the next sugar beet seed crop. Meiosis of triploid hybrids is irregular and can result in development of gametes with different chromosome number. Sugar beet triploids in metaphase I have 9 univalents and 9 bivalents and therefore can be source of aneuploid gametes. After cytological analysis that was performed on 2124 meiocytes, in 14.64% different types of irregularities were detected, such as dislocated chromosomes and chromosome bridges.
AB - U semenskoj proizvodnji triploida šećerne repe u toku žetve dolazi do osipanja semena. Zbog toga u narednih nekoliko godina niču triploidne i tetraploidne biljke.

AB - Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are a group of diverse soil bacteria which stimulate the growth of the host plant. It has been shown that Azotobacter chroococcum may be used as biofertilizer for increasing the yield and improving technological characteristics of sugar beet. The effect of three different ways of inoculation of sugarbeet with Azotobacter chroococcum on the production features of sugar beet and microbiological status of rhizosphere soil has been tested. One variety of sugar beet, Drena, was included in the tests in the region Rimski Šančevi, Novi Sad, during 2008 and 2009. Five strains of Azotobacter chroococcum (1, 5, 8, 10 and 14) were used as microbiological fertilizers. There were three variations of inoculation: (A) incorporation in the soil, (B) before the fi rst cultivation, and (C) applying the liquid culture of strain on the seed before sowing. The highest increase in yield of sugar beet roots 6.25 t ha-1 and yield of white sugar 0.91 t ha-1 was achieved with strain 10 with variant of inoculation of soil before the first cultivation. In both years, a positive effect of Azotobacter chroococcum was observed on the total number of microorganisms in the rhizosphere.

AB - Water is becoming more and more limiting factor of sugar beet production and the productivity of the crop can be significantly improved by increased drought tolerance. It is therefore a great challenge to assess the degree of variability of anatomical and morphological traits of breeding material with respect to water use efficiency and drought, that can be used as potential markers for selection of sugar beet genotypes with better tolerance to water shortage. To achieve this, the first step is to assess the degree of genetic variability with respect to anatomical and histological features linked to water management in plants, under optimal water supply. Comparative histiological analysis of lamina and petiole was done on 12 sugar beet genotypes which previously showed divergent responses to lack of water in the field. The plants were grown in semi-controlled conditions of a glasshouse, and watered daily. Mircromorphological analyses were done to assess leaf epidermal characteristics, by both light and SEM, and lamina and petiole histological features. The measurements were used to calculate the percentage of individual tissues in relation to the thickness of the lamina, main vein area and petiole area. The general structure of sample variability was established by principal component analysis (PCA), based on correlation matrix. In majority of genotypes the ratio of the size of cells of spongy parenchyma and palisade cells in average was 80%. Low genotypic variability of the studied histological parameters of the lamina and petiole may reflect the narrow genetic base of tested breeding material. The most significant genotypic difference, considering leaf epidermal tissue, was in % of adaxial and abaxial epidermis. The highest found number of stomata per mm(2) on both adaxial and abaxial epidermis was 40% higher than the lowest. During water stress, when stomata are closed, plant survival depends on the amount of water lost through the cuticle. SEM analysis of adaxial epidermis of the lamina show that cuticle varies in texture. Considering the observed genotypic variability in cuticle ornamentation and the fact that plants develop various strategies of adaptation to drought, finding genotypes with increased drought tolerance could be based on the characteristics of the cuticle and epidermis.
