AB - The sustainable production of agricultural commodities, such as vegetable proteins and oils, is currently facing the challenge of developing new cropping strategies more e fficient in terms of water, nutrients, and land, while being able to increase the supply of domestic feedstocks. Double cropping of camelina (Camelina sativa L.), sown in the autumn, with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) can be proposed as a sustainable way to produce in the same growing season and land, multiple feedstocks for both energy, feed and food uses. A preliminary trial was conducted in Novi Sad (Serbia) during the 2018/19 growing season to test: yield performance, oil content and 1000 seed mass of two early sunflower hybrids (NS Dukat and NS H 7749) sown just after the harvest of two camelina varieties (NS Slatka and NS Zlatka which average yield was 920 kg/ha). Sunflower hybrids were also grown in the monocropping system as control. Both sunflower hybrids had higher seed yields in the monocropping system (+24%), but when considering the total yield of the two crops in the double cropping seed yield resulted slightly higher (+1-3%) than that of sunflower in the monocropping system. Although the average oil content and oil yield of sunflower was 6% and 27% higher in the monocropping system, respectively, the high nutritional value of camelina’s oil, which is rich in omega-3, should be also carefully evaluated.

AB - Sunflower breeding is a continuous process designed to increase yield levels and improve resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding methods that vary by species. The emergence of new techniques, such as genomic selection and genome editing, together with efficient phenotyping platforms, have paved the way for more efficient introduction of desirable traits. New approaches in genotyping and phenotyping have enabled more efficient data collection to identify quantitative traits and explain the genetic basis of agronomically important traits. The creation of sunflower genotypes resistant to climate change can contribute to mitigating the negative impact that agricultural production has on the environment, such as intensive water depletion and greenhouse gas emissions, while on the other hand providing resources for stable agricultural production. The paper provides an overview of new approaches and steps in sunflower breeding and the creation of genotypes tolerant to climate changes, with a review of the activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops related to their application in the NS breeding program.

AB - Changes in yield components and spike traits are associated with wheat grain yield genetic progress. The aim of this study was to determine variation in yield components, spike and individual grain traits, and their role in winter wheat grain yield genetic improvement under conditions of the Pannonian Plain. Therefore, two-year field trials were conducted in a southern Pannonian location (Novi Sad, Serbia) with ten winter wheat cultivars released between 1931 and 2015. The grain yield had a significant positive linear relationship with the year of cultivar release, showing the improvement rate of 46.4 kg ha−1 yr−1. Grain yield increase has been positively related to the improvement of spike grain weight. Spike grain weight improvement with a rate of 0.25 g yr−1 was followed by simultaneous rise of the individual grain number and grain weight at different positions within a spikelet. Compared to other grains at different positions within a spikelet, G3 grains showed the highest rate of grain weight and the grain number improvement with the year of cultivar release. On the other hand, there was a significant decrease trend of grain protein content in individual grains at different positions. Therefore, wheat breeders should be more focused on grain number and weight improvement of distal grains in order to regain higher grain yield genetic gain under conditions of the Pannonian Plain.

AB - With aim to improve characterization and eventually, utilisation of garlic collection from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Serbia, the genetic diversity of 52 accessions was estimated
based on microsatellite markers, agronomic, biochemical and phenotypic traits (UPOV descriptor).
The Shannon index H′ with a value of 0.47–0.95 indicated a high level of diversity for the greatest
number of examined traits according to the UPOV descriptor. Based on agronomic and biochemical traits, groups of genotypes with the highest potential for yield and bioactive properties improvement were singled out. Molecular evaluation indicated the presence of duplicates in the collection and necessity of further research with additional number of DNA markers. The obtained results are important from the aspects of breeding and development of new varieties with improved yield and functional value as well as more economical conservation of genetic resources. Since diversity of plant genetic resources constantly decreases, the obtained results have long-term significance because preserved and genetically variable collections represent a valuable source of desirable genes for future human needs.

AB - Maize is a globally significant cereal crop, contributing to the production of essential food products and serving as a pivotal resource for diverse industrial applications. This study investigated the proximate analysis of maize hybrids from different FAO maturity groups in Serbia, exploring variations in polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, tocopherols, and fatty acids with the aim of understanding how agroecological conditions influence the nutritional potential of maize hybrids. The results indicate substantial variations in nutritional composition and antioxidant properties among different maturity groups. The levels of total polyphenols varied among FAO groups, indicating that specific hybrids may offer greater health benefits. Flavonoids and carotenoids also showed considerable variation, with implications for nutritional quality. Tocopherol content varied significantly, emphasizing the diversity in antioxidant capacity. Fatty acid analysis revealed high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, indicating favorable nutritional and industrial properties. The study highlights the importance of considering maturity groups in assessing the nutritional potential of maize hybrids.

AB - Identifying the contributions of climate factors and fertilization to maize yield is significant for the assessment of climate change impacts on maize production under semiarid conditions. This experiment was conducted with an overall objective to find how N fertilization and cultivar interactions along with climatic conditions determine the mineral composition and maize yield responses of four divergent maize cultivars grown under eight different fertilization levels. The results showed that element contents were significantly affected by year (Y), cultivar (C), N fertilization, and N × C interaction. The element contents of grains were mainly influenced by N rate or N × C interactions. The results showed that maize yield was significantly affected by year (Y), genotype (G), N fertilization (N), and Y × G × N interaction. These results implied that the maize yield was significantly affected by changes in genotypes and environments. Overall, our findings are a result of the interactions of genetic, environmental, and agronomic management factors. Future studies could evaluate more extreme plant densities, N fertilizer levels, and environments to further enhance our understanding of management effects on the mineral composition and maize yield in calcareous soil.

AB - Infections with phytoplasma present one of the most significant biotic stresses influencing plant health, growth, and production. The phytoplasma ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ infects a variety of plant species. This pathogen impacts the physiological and morphological characteristics of plants causing stunting, yellowing, leaf curling, and other symptoms that can lead to significant economic losses. The aim of this study was to determine biochemical changes in peony (Paeonia tenuifolia L.), mint (Mentha × piperita L.), and dill (Anethum graveolens L.) induced by ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani’ in Serbia as well as to predict the impact of the biotic stress using artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. The phylogenetic position of the Serbian ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani’ strains originated from the tested hosts using 16S rRNA (peony and carrot strains) and plsC (mint and dill strains) sequences indicated by their genetic homogeneity despite the host of origin. Biochemical parameters significantly differed in asymptomatic and symptomatic plants, except for total anthocyanidins contents in dill and the capacity of peony and mint extracts to neutralize superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals, respectively. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed a correlation between different chemical parameters and revealed a clear separation among the samples. Based on the ANN performance, the optimal number of hidden neurons for the calculation of TS, RG, PAL, LP, NBT, •OH, TP, TT, Tflav, Tpro, Tant, DPPH, and Car was nine (using MLP 8-9-13), as it produced high r2 values (1.000 during the training period) and low SOS values. Developing an effective early warning system for the detection of plant diseases in different plant species is critical for improving crop yield and quality.

AB - The radioactive fission product 90Sr has a sufficient half-life (28.8 years) to be detected long after its appearance in the environment. After its uptake into the soil-edible plant system, it enters the food chain and represents a potential source of contamination that threatens human health. Due to these facts, tracking the distribution of the artificial radionuclide 90Sr in the soil–edible plant system is a subject of intense research. The tracking of the 90Sr radionuclide distribution in the soil profile, as well as in the crops on the long-term experimental fields was carried out using beta radiation spectrometry. The radiochemical analytical method was used to analyze the 90Sr content in cultivated soil and crops. The conducted study focused on the experimental substantiation of the developed model for predicting the behavior of 90Sr in the cultivated soil–crop system. The results of using the applied radioecological model for the transfer of 90Sr from the soil to the above-ground part of crops showed a relatively good agreement with the experimentally determined values of the soil–crop transfer factor, which indicates that the used model can be successfully applied for the prediction of the behavior of 90Sr in the soil–soil solution–crop system.

AB - Plant density, the number of plants per unit area, is an important factor in maize production. Plant density exhibits high variability and depends on a number of factors, i.e., the length of the growing period of the hybrid, the morphological characteristics of the plant, the amount and distribution of precipitation during the growing season, the reserve of winter moisture in the soil, the level of soil fertility, the time of sowing, agronomic management practices, and biomass and yield. The objective of this paper was to determine the agronomic optimal plant density for maize in calcareous soil in the semiarid conditions of the South Pannonian Basin. Field experiments were conducted at the experimental field—IFVCNS (two locations: Rimski Šančevi and Srbobran) to evaluate four plant densities (55,000; 65,000; 75,000; and 85,000 plants ha−1). The experimental sites “Rimski Šančevi” and “Srbobran” are located in the typical chernozem zone of the southern part of the Pannonian Basin. On average for all hybrids, the grain yield followed a second-degree polynomial model in response to the increasing planting density, with the highest value at plant density (PD2: 65,000 plants ha−1). To achieve maximum yield, the optimal planting density for corn hybrids of the FAO 200 group should be 57,600 plants ha−1, for the FAO 300 group 64,300 plants ha−1, for the FAO 400 group 68,700 plants ha−1, for the FAO 500 group 66,800 plants ha−1, and for the FAO 600 group 63,500 plants ha−1. “Which–Won–Where” biplot showed that the hybrid H24 from FAO 600 group was the highest yielding in all of the environments. Hybrid H17 from the same FAO group was the most stable across all of the environments. Selected hybrids may further be studied for planting density and nutritional requirements for getting maximum yield. By introducing new maize hybrids with higher genetic yield potential and better agronomic management practices, modern mechanization and agricultural techniques allowed to increase planting densities

AB - In this paper is examined oil and protein content of 30 maize NS hybrids to evaluate it purpose for process industry. The standard Soxhlet method was used to determine the oil content, while the standard Kjeldahl method was used to determine the protein content. The average oil content in the grain of all tested hybrids ranged from 4.05% to 6.14% d.m. basis, while the average protein content ranged from 8.67% to 13.05% d.m. basis. Five NS maize hybrids can be characterized as high-oil hybrids, while only one corn hybrid had a value over 13% per d.m. basis.

AB - The integration of nanoparticles (NPs) into agriculture is altering traditional methods, enhancing productivity and sustainability. This study explores the application of iron oxide nanoparticles (FeONPs) to mitigate salt-alkaline stress in cherry tomatoes. We investigated FeONPs at three concentrations (FeONP25, FeONP50, FeONP100 mg/kg soil) in pot experiments under non-stress (NS) and salt-alkaline stress (SAS) conditions. SAS conditions decreased biomass and nutrients in untreated plants, a trend reversed by FeONPs. FeONPs treatments significantly boosted pigment levels under SAS, thereby increasing chlorophyll a (10.65–43.05%), chlorophyll b (7.19–41.33%), total chlorophyll (9.84–42.49%), and carotenoids (8.97–36.09%) compared to the control. FeONPs also reduced NPQ under stress, indicating enhanced photosynthetic efficiency. Oxidative stress markers (H2O2, O₂−, and MDA) were strongly induced in control plants but significantly declined with FeONPs treatments. Antioxidants and osmoregulatory substances significantly improved with FeONPs, thereby demonstrating their potential to alleviate SAS in cherry tomato plants.

AB - Concern over the harmful impacts of heavy metal pollution in soil has increased dramatically on a global scale. For the sake of environmental preservation, accurate estimates of the heavy metal concentrations in soil are essential. This study provides valuable data regarding heavy metal concentrations in soil collected from field crops production area in Central and Western Serbia. Five wider localities in the zones of Central and Western Serbia were selected for the collection of soil samples. Based on our research, focused on determining the total contents of heavy metals in the soil and the degree of pollution in the environment caused by their behavior, distribution, and origin, it can be concluded that there is pronounced variability in relation to localities. Heavy metal contents were mostly within the same ranges as those in similar soils from Europe and around the world. Any pollution control system must include heavy metal monitoring, including the methodical collection of data on the concentrations of heavy metals in a particular environment. Before environmental degradation occurs, it is crucial to set pollution limits and implement efficient monitoring procedures.

AB - Two genotypes of pigmented maize (black (BM) and red (RM)) were used as flour ingredients in several formulations of the traditional baked maize dish “proja”. This study investigated the stability of phytochemical compounds and antioxidant activity in proja as affected by baking and different acidity degrees of dough formulations. Compared to RM proja, all BM proja formulations were significantly higher in antioxidant compounds and exhibited the highest inhibitory activity (73–85%) against DPPH. There was a strong significant correlation between DPPH inhibition and total phenolics (r2 = 0.95), flavonoids (r2 = 0.96), and anthocyanins (r2 = 0.97) in baked proja. After baking, 67–85% of total phenolics were retained. The fate of flavonoids and anthocyanins after baking was variable: from 70% degradation to liberation. Dough acidity significantly and positively affected the content of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins in BM proja (r2 = 0.70, 0.82, and 0.47, respectively). Baking increased antioxidant activity against DPPH, •OH, and O2•− radicals in proja, except for ≈10% decline of DPPH inhibition in BM proja. In RM proja, retention of inhibitory capacity against O2•− was highly correlated to flavonoid retention (r2 = 0.71). Using pigmented maize flour in proja baking resulted in proja with appreciable content of total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and high antioxidant activity, confirming the significant improvement of the nutrient profile of this traditional food.

AB - Suncokret je sve više ižložen negativnim uticajima klimatskih promena, posebno visokim
temperaturama i sušnim periodima, što neretko uzrokuje značajne varijacije i smanjenje prinosa
semena.
sprovodi svake godine multilokacijske mikro i proizvodne ogleda širom zemlje, testirajući
adaptabilnost i stabilnost novih i već raširenih hibrida suncokreta u različitim mikroklimatskim
uslovima. Tokom 2023. godine hibridi nove generacije, odnosno dva konvencionalna hibrida (NS
Kruna i NS Ronin) i dva Express (SUMO) hibrida (NS H 8002 i NS H 8005) posejani su u osam
regiona tj. okruga, kod četiri poljoprivredna proizvođača a u svakom okrugu.
hibridi u proseku ostvarili veće prinose u svim okruzima. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju da novosadski
hibridi nove generacije poseduju izuzetnu adaptabilnost, stabilnost, a pored toga i visok
potencijal za prinos u različitim agroekološkim uslovima širom Republike Srbije.

temperaturama i sušnim periodima, što neretko uzrokuje značajne varijacije i smanjenje prinosa
semena.
sprovodi svake godine multilokacijske mikro i proizvodne ogleda širom zemlje, testirajući
adaptabilnost i stabilnost novih i već raširenih hibrida suncokreta u različitim mikroklimatskim
uslovima. Tokom 2023. godine hibridi nove generacije, odnosno dva konvencionalna hibrida (NS
Kruna i NS Ronin) i dva Express (SUMO) hibrida (NS H 8002 i NS H 8005) posejani su u osam
regiona tj. okruga, kod četiri poljoprivredna proizvođača a u svakom okrugu.
hibridi u proseku ostvarili veće prinose u svim okruzima. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju da novosadski
hibridi nove generacije poseduju izuzetnu adaptabilnost, stabilnost, a pored toga i visok
potencijal za prinos u različitim agroekološkim uslovima širom Republike Srbije.",

AB - Sunflower seeds are key agricultural commodities due to their nutritional and industrial value. This study aimed to analyze the distribution of targeted bioactive compounds and assess the physical properties across 27 sunflower seed genotypes, including parental lines and F1 and F2 hybrids, cultivated in Serbia. Various analytical techniques were employed to determine the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the seeds. This research revealed significant genetic variability in fatty acid profiles, with differences in polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acid levels among the genotypes. Hybrid seeds displayed variations in 1000-seed weight and bulk density compared to parental lines, which exhibited higher essential fatty acid contents and mechanical properties advantageous for industrial processing. These insights highlight the potential for refining breeding strategies to improve seed quality for specific industrial purposes. Overall, this study emphasizes the critical role of genetic selection in enhancing the nutritional and processing qualities of sunflower seeds, offering valuable perspectives for advancing agricultural and breeding practices.

AB - Sunflower is a globally important oilseed crop mainly used for oil in human consumption, while secondary products have nutritional value in livestock feed. Neverthless there have been advancements in breeding sunflower genotypes with desirable traits, high yield, and disease resistance, further research is needed to address emerging challenges, such as climate resilience and sustainability. Bearing in mind that sunflower breeding over the last several decades has mainly foucused on biotic and abiotic resilience, sunflower oil content in hybrids has remained at the same level, 40-50%. Considering the trends of climate change, drought tolerance certainly represents an essential trait in breeding programs worldwide. The question arises whether it is time to further orient in sunflower breeding towards increasing oil content, bearing in mind that in light of increasingly frequent dry years. It is very difficult to make progress in seed yield. The aim of our study was to develop sunflower genotypes characterized by drought tolerance and increased oil content (>55%). Initial plant material was selected from a gene pool of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. We used a traditional approach by crossing highly drought tolerant inbred lines characterized by oil content ranging from 50-52%. Genetic material for drought tolerance was selected based on field trials and in vitro drought conditions, over six vegetations (3 vegetations in field conditions and 3 vegetations in in vitro conditions). Oil content was determined using nuclear magnetic resonance analyzer (NMR, Maran Ultra-10). The pedigree method of selection was used to develop new genetic material with desirable traits. As a result, we developed seven inbred lines designated as DO1 to DO7 characterized by high drought tolerance and high oil content ranging from 55.09% to 60.39%. Our results revealed that there is a possibility for significant improvement in sunflower oil content while simultaneously breeding for drought resistant. Further studies will include biotechnological tools in order to identify QTLs associated with drought tolerance and increased oil content and to develop markers associated with traits of interest in order to accelerate the breeding process.

AB - Organic agriculture has to satisfy a growing need for food satety with maintaining
soil fertility and ameliorating climate change effects. NS confectionary hybrids have good
characteristics, uniform color and size and are suitable for machine dehulling. They are used
for production of both large amounts of unrefined cold pressed oil and oilcake. Testing NS
confenctinary hybrids under different production systems (conventional and organic) is
important when breeding for hybrids with a wide degree of adaptability to different
cultivation conditions The specific treatments were analyzed under organic cultivation
condition. The application of the Guanito organic fertilizer at a dose of 0.5t ha-1 applied
during the BBCH 01 stage, the application of Trainer at 3l ha-1 and Natur Plasma at 5l ha-1,
were applied during the BBCH 36 stage. This was compared to a purely conventional
treatment with mixed NPK fertilizer (50:50:50), and a control cultivation in organic
production with no treatment. Five different confenctionary hybrids were analyzed under
above conditions, making for 25 unique test conditions. fatty acids, oil content and tocopherol
in sunflower seed were measured under lab condition. The analysis firstly was performed with
one level ANOVA on both hybrids and different treatments, as well as with two-level
ANOVA. Differences between hybrids were found to be significant in the one-way ANOVA
for 4 different kind offatty acids, and seed oil content. No ignificant was found with one-way
ANOVA test among different treatments. Two-way ANOVA analysis for alpha-tocopherol
has been confirmed the significant differences among tested hybrids., The significant
interaction were detected between both hybrids and treatments for palmytic, stearic and
linoleic content, as well as the significant differences for hybrids is only detected on oleic
content. Due to there is no significant differences was found between different models with
the Akaike Information Criterion, that's why Wilcox’s robust two-way ANOVA analogue was
used with n = 1000 for subsampling. A robust one-way ANOVA analogue was applied using
Wilcox’s algorithm and Welch’s method with 20% trimmed means and 5000 subsampling
steps. Significant results were found for stearic, oleic, linoleic and oil content. Given that
these models have been validated with robust statistics, they were elected as suitable for post
hoc analysis. Preliminary result analysis shows that there are no statistically significant
differences between organic, control and conventional treatments. It detects no significant
differences in tocopherol levels between different hybrids, but the available datashowed the
significant (at a 0.001 level) differences in fatty acid and oil content. Further work should be
developed to study the use of organic fertilizers on NS confenctionary hybrids so as to creat
the organic growth conditions for sunflower.

AB - Variation of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) core collection
was assessed based on the main nutritive and bioactive components. Nutritional
profile was described for each cultivar and landrace. Protein content was in
the familiar range for common bean (19.6-31.6%). Detected variability for
potassium, sulphur, iron and zinc was 7.78, 16.7, 14.99, and 40.17%, respectively.
Total phenolic content ranged from 1.8 to 14.1 mg GAE /g DW, with high variation
(CV = 41.3%). Likewise, antioxidant tests DPPH, ABTS and FRAP had high,
genotype-based, CV in range 29-46%. With the application of PCA and cluster
analysis, better insight in underlying germplasm structure was acknowledged,
as well accession’s grouping based on the studied traits. Cultivars Vulkan
and Panonski tetovac, breeding line HR45, landraces L24, L92, L119, L120,
and L125 had larger amounts of iron, nitrogen, and proteins. Elevated phenolic
content was observed in cultivars Balkan and Spinel, as well as landraces
L19, L29, L41 and L60. In addition, cultivar Royal Dutch was recognized for
higher levels of zinc, and higher antioxidant capacity revealed by DPPH, ABTS,
and FRAP assays. Therefore, these tests could be used in the selection of the
accessions for breeding for nutritive quality enhancing.

profile was described for each cultivar and landrace.
Therefore, these tests could be used in the selection of the
accessions for breeding for nutritive quality enhancing.",

AB - Bacteria Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) in the agro-ecological conditions of Serbia is a significant pathogen of fam. Brassicaceae plants. Copper compounds are the only available chemical measure against phytopathogenic bacteria and most often used in production. The aim of this paper is to determine the sensitivity and tolerance change of Xcc isolates to different copper compounds (copper-hydroxide, copper-oxychloride, copper (II) sulphate). On 15 localities on the territory of Serbia, 68 samples were collected in the period 2017 – 2023, out of which 54 isolates were obtained by isolation from leaves (cabbage, cauliflower, winter oilseed rape, savoy cabbage, brussels sprout, broccoli) which were identified as Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris based on classical and molecular methods. By testing the sensitivity, the development of isolates at the concentration of 100 ppm was determined for all investigated copper compounds. The concentration of 200 ppm enabled the development of most isolates, except for rapeseed isolates, brussels sprout isolates and some cauliflower (KL-18; KL-23) and cabbage isolates (KS-81, KS-82, KS-84, KS-88). The concentration of 300 ppm of different tested copper compounds had an inhibitory effect on the majority of tested isolates. In the case of the treatment with copper oxychloride and copper hydroxide, there was recorded the development of the isolates originating from cabbage (KS-65, KS-66, KS-67, KS-75, KS-76, KS-92, KS-93) and one isolate from brussels sprout (KP-3), while in the case of the treatment using copper (II) sulfate, two isolates originating from the cabbage of the Futog locality (KS-75, KS-76) developed. The concentration of 400 ppm of all tested forms of copper had an inhibitory effect on the development of all tested isolates. Comparing with earlier research done in the period 2013 - 2017, there was observed an increase in copper tolerance of Xcc isolates from the same localities.

AB - The leaf area index (LAI) is one of the most common used indice for describing the above-ground biomass of crops, which is useful for understanding the complex roles of different factors on affecting the leaf development. The photosynthetic capacity of the sunflower plant is defined, by the leaf area index as well as the dynamics of its change during the vegetation period, whereas, photosynthesis is directly responsible for the accumulation of nutrients and yields. The goal of the research was to analyze LAI differences in s intercropping systems between sunflower and legume. A four-year trial (2017-2020) was conducted in Serbia’s agroecological conditions using a split-plot design. Two oil-type and one confectionary-type hybrid were intercropped with common vetch, red clover, and alfalfa. LAI was obtained using one direct and two indirect methods. The threshold for correlation coefficient indicating the statistical significance of the correlation in a matrix (critical r-value) for a probability of 95% (α 0.05) is 0.576, and for 99% probability (α 0.001) is 0.708.

AB - Among the effects of wide-ranging climate change, drought presents a significant
threat to global agricultural production. Drought reduces yield quantity and quality of crops,
particularly in the semi-arid and arid regions. Sunflower is known for its moderate tolerance
to water stress conditions thanks to its well-developed root system and ability to grow in
different agroecological conditions. However, prolonged exposure to drought significantly
reduces sunflower seed and oil yields, impacting global oil quality. Drought stress in
sunflower mostly occurs during the seedling stage, vegetative phase or reproductive phase.
Understanding the mechanisms and factors influencing drought tolerance is essential for
developing resilient sunflower capable of sustaining agricultural productivity in the face of
climate variability and water scarcity. Therefore, breeding for drought tolerance is an
economical, feasible, and environmentally friendly control method However, it requires the
use of the unexploited approach in sunflower research due to the complexity of the trait.
Initially, determination of the genetic diversity existing within and between sunflower species
remains the basis for elucidating of the genetic structure and for improvement of traits,
including drought tolerance. Manipulation of this diversity to improve drought tolerance
among sunflower genotypes may be achieved through selection of adaptive mechanisms that
include drought escape, avoidance and tolerance. The breeding tools and technologies for
drought tolerance are based on so-called “-omics” techniques, including phenomics,
genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics. Phenomics refers to
a quantitative description of the plant's morphological, anatomical, ontogenetic, physiological,
and biochemical properties. Recent advancements in phenomics, facilitated by highthroughput phenotyping tools, empower researchers to explore multivariate phenotypic
information. Utilizing mainly non-invasive methods, phenotyping facilitates the measurement
of complex plant traits, pivotal for comprehending plant growth, development, and
interactions with the environment across various scales. Image-based techniques significantly
enhance the scale and efficiency of plant phenotyping activities, necessitating the
transformation of images into reliable and accurate phenotypic measurements. With
phenomics insights into plant traits, researchers can optimize phenotypes tailored to specific
climatic conditions and agronomic practices, with root traits playing a central role in
identifying features beneficial to crop performance and yield.

AB - Drought is a global threat to food security and is a major abiotic factor limiting
crop production. Enhancing drought tolerance in crops is therefore a critical goal in breeding
programs worldwide. Despite being considered a moderately drought-tolerant crop,
sunflower’s production is still affected by drought. Drought tolerance is a complex trait, that
triggers numerous responses at morphological, physiological and molecular levels. Hence, a
comprehensive approach is needed to decipher the underlying mechanisms in sunflower.
At the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS), we have created a broad sunflower
panel of nearly 50 IFVCNS inbred lines, that were tested under in vitro conditions. Through
comprehensive phenotyping, we identify traits associated with drought tolerance. The most
drought-tolerant and sensitive genotypes were identified and subjected to further testing in pot
experiments to validate the in vitro results and to examine sunflower responses to drought
stress at later development stages on transcriptomic and epigenetic levels. Additionally, the
recovery capacity of the genotypes is being examined. Current efforts are focused on
determine the key mechanisms involved in drought tolerance by analyzing gene expression,
transcriptome and epigenome variations. The goal of this research is to identify stable
drought-induced transcriptomic and epigenetic variations, as well as target genes and
epiQTLs, that can be used in marker-assisted breeding.

AB - Although flower pollinator interactions are known to be mediated by floral traits, not enough attention has been paid to the research of secretory tissues and volatile components of sunflower disc florets as potentially important parameters in breeding programs. (1) To our knowledge, this is the first integrated study aimed at better understanding the attractiveness of sunflower capitula to insects. In the study, we have made a very detailed comparative analysis of secretory tissues and the characterization of the volatile components (VOCs) of disc florets in 10 wild perennial Helianthus species. (2) For anatomical analyses, cross-sections were obtained from the nectary zone of disc florets using a cryotechnique procedure. Micromorphological observation and morphological and anatomical analysis of disc florets were performed using light and scanning electron microscopy. For VOCs, we applied headspace, GC-FID, and GC/MS analyses. (3) The obtained results indicate that there is a difference between the analyzed traits among studied species. H. eggertii, H. hirsutus, H. mollis, H. resinosus, and H. tuberosus had high disc diameter values, a high cross-section area and disc floret corolla length, as well as the largest cross-section area and thickness of the disc florets nectary. In the analyzed VOCs, 30 different compounds were detected. The highest yield and quantity of α-Pinene was observed in H. mollis. (4) Inflorescence features, such as receptacle diameter, corolla and secretory tissue properties, and floret VOCs production and characterization, provided valuable information that can be used as guidelines in sunflower breeding programs to maximize pollinator attractiveness and increase seed yield.

AB - Frankliniella occidentalis (thrips) is a widespread polyphagous insect pest that causes damage and yield losses. Control of this and other thrips species is challenging due to the emergence of insecticide-resistant populations. Wild sunflower species have proven useful in sunflower breeding programs as a source of resistance genes. Therefore, this work is aimed to evaluate the suseptibility of five annual wild species of Helianthus (H. annuus, H. argophillus, H. neglectus, H. praecox and H. petiolaris) in relation to the tolerance of F. occidentalis. The bioassay was set up in a greenhouse with an uncontrolled thrips population, in ten replicates. The number of adults of F. occidentalis was counted twice during the experiment, within ten days, from five leaves of each plant (replication). The density of non-glandular trichomes on both epidermises was analyzed with a light microscope on the same leaves (except H. argophyllus). According to our results, the highest average number of thrips adults was on H. annuus and H. argophilus during both observation periods that also have a very dense indumetnum. The most tolerant, with the lowest number of thrips adults were H. praecox and H. neglectus, characterized with less developed indumentum. According to our results, we can conclude that the density of non-glandular trichomes does not affect the preference of F. occidentalis. However, the development and distribution of the leaf epidermal cuticle, epicuticular waxes and glandular trichomes (capitate and linear) may be related to the degree of resistance, which is the subject of our future research.
