AB - One of the major challenges that plant breeders face in the 21st century is food safety for growing human population coupled with extreme climate changes. Accordingly, the most important breeders’ goal is to find appropriate methods in response to these challenges in order to create high-yielding varieties resilient to abiotic and biotic stressors. The aim of this study was to determine optimal doses of gamma irradiation in two wheat and one barley varieties and to apply the identified doses for development of mutant populations. Wheat and barley varieties showed different reactions to applied doses of gamma irradiation. Wheat varieties had germination rate over 90% at all applied doses while barley seeds showed to be more susceptible to gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation had greater influence on seedling height which was clearly
demonstrated by growth reduction with increasing radiation doses. ANOVA showed a significant
difference between genotypes, applied doses of gamma radiation as well as genotype by doses
interaction for seedling height. At highest dose of 600 Gy, the reduction of seedling height was
94.6%, 96.5% and 96.8% in Simonida, Rudnik and NS 40S, respectively. The irradiation doses that
resulted in seedling growth reduction by 50% (GR50) were 210 Gy for barley Rudnik and wheat
NS 40S, and 310 Gy for wheat variety Simonida. Identified doses were used for the irradiation of
2000 seeds of each variety in order to produce mutant populations that will be further used in a breeding program for development of varieties with increased resilience to climate change.

semena.
sprovodi svake godine multilokacijske mikro i proizvodne ogleda širom zemlje, testirajući
adaptabilnost i stabilnost novih i već raširenih hibrida suncokreta u različitim mikroklimatskim
uslovima. Tokom 2023. godine hibridi nove generacije, odnosno dva konvencionalna hibrida (NS
Kruna i NS Ronin) i dva Express (SUMO) hibrida (NS H 8002 i NS H 8005) posejani su u osam
regiona tj. okruga, kod četiri poljoprivredna proizvođača a u svakom okrugu.
hibridi u proseku ostvarili veće prinose u svim okruzima. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju da novosadski
hibridi nove generacije poseduju izuzetnu adaptabilnost, stabilnost, a pored toga i visok

AB - Crop breeding is a continuous process aimed at increasing yields and improving crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recently, frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions have led to the fact that classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions and a timely response to new challenges in agricultural production. With all this in mind, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established the Centre of Excellence for Innovations in the Breeding of Climate-tolerant Plants - Climate Crops with the aim of introducing and applying new breeding techniques (NBT), along with efficient phenotyping platforms in crop breeding programs in IFVCNS. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.

Očekuje se da će aktivnocti u okviru Climate Crops pozitivno uticati na izvrsnost i inovativne kapacitete IFVCNS u oblasti oplemenjivanja biljaka tolerantnih na ekstremne vremenske uslove koji se javljaju kao posledica promene klime., Crop breeding is a continuous process aimed at increasing yields and improving crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.",

AB - Induced mutations are useful tool to broaden the genetic diversity of crops. By using this meticulously orchestrated process, the intention is to harness induced genetic variability to identify and develop new crop varieties that exhibit improved and desirable traits and that are better adapted to changing climate. Within framework of previous IAEA projects, fifteen superior IFVCNS sunflower genotypes, were exposed to gamma rays, fast neutrons, and EMS, altering seedling height. Damage indices (D50 and D30) were calculated for each genotype. Bulk irradiation targeting 30-50% growth reduction will be applied, followed by M1 field cultivation. Promising mutants, that are currently in M6 stage, are currently undergoing selection based on traits like early flowering, reduced stature, leaf and head changes, branching, head angle, sterility, and oil yield. This controlled evolution aims to develop new improved sunflower varieties. Through the activities of the project RER5024, supported by IAEA, mutation breeding is introduced into IFVCNS wheat and barley improvement programs by production and exploitation of three mutant populations.

AB - Sunflower is the fourth most important oil plant worldwide and the second most important oil crop in Europe, along with rapeseed. Due to its high content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as vitamin E, sunflower oil is the preferred type of oil in human nutrition in Europe. That is why, as opposed to other different vegetable oils, circa 90% of the total sunflower oil produced is used for food, while 10% is exploited for biodiesel production and other industrial purposes. In human nutrition, sunflower oil is used for cooking, frying, and preparing salads, while in industry, it is used in the frying process and for margarine production. Maintaining secure and sustainable sunflower production is, therefore, of utmost importance. Sunflower breeding led to a significant increase in oil content and change in oil composition, thus increasing both oil quantity and quality. Nowadays, different biotechnological techniques are used to accelerate the creation of superior sunflower genotypes that will be productive in climate changing environments and still be of high quality. The conventional and molecular methods used in sunflower breeding for improved nutrition quality will be addressed in this chapter.

AB - The introduction of sunflower hybrids into production became possible after the discovery of the CMS source in 1969. The first hybrids were put into production in Romania, Yugoslavia and France at the end of the eighties of the last century. Today, sunflowers are grown on over 28 million hectares in the world, and hybrid seeds are sown on over 85% of this area, the rest of the area is still occupied by open-pollinated varieties. The production of hybrid seeds involved certain specificities. Since the female and male parental lines often do not have the same length of vegetation, they need to be sown at different times to achieve a flowering match. This problem was largely overcome by introducing recessive branching into the male line, which extended its flowering period. The main problems in production are related to fertilization, which can lead to low seed yields. The reasons for poor fertilization lie in incompatibility, low attractiveness for pollinators and other factors. These problems are overcome by finding lines with good compatibility, changing the ratio of the number of rows, increasing the number of hives/ha, but also by using preparations based on pheromones that increase bee visits. A successful hybrid must be good and yielding in seed production too, otherwise its production is not worthwhile.

AB - Induced mutations are used for the production of mutant varieties with altered plant characteristics, which result in a significant increase in production and / or improvement in quality. The resulting mutants have contributed to overcoming numerous obstacles in plant breeding and creating new and valuable forms, such as e.g. semi-dwarf wheat varieties, early maturing, disease resistance, etc. The application of induced mutations was widely spread between the 1950s and 1980s, and great successes have been made in creating mutated varieties. The early years of the 21st century have witnessed a return of induced mutation technologies due to a better understanding of mutagenesis and related disciplines, leading to a number of different applications. The economic value of this technology has been proven by the fact that more than 3,300 mutant varieties of different plant species have been created in the world so far, including 291 varieties of bread wheat and 316 varieties of barley. Using this technology, only one variety of paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) was registered in Serbia - Horgoška slatka -X-3 in 1974. Since that time, there have been no examples of successful mutation use in crop varieties creation in Serbia.

AB - U radu su predstavljeni rezultati produktivnosti NS hibrida suncokreta standardnog i hemijskog tipa u mreži mikroogleda izvedenih u Srbiji tokom 2021. godine.
ha i 4,37 t/ha.

AB - Sunflower, a relevant crop for oil production in temperature regions, is
subjected to various biotic stresses. Significance of a particular stress agent, both
spatially and temporally, is determined by the environmental limitations and the
pest population variability. This chapter provides a review of the major sunflower
diseases and pests, with an emphasis on their distribution and description of the
damage they may cause. Besides, we discuss different strategies used in sunflower
breeding for biotic stress resistance, strategy that is reliable, durable, cost effective
and with low negative impact on environment, for pest and disease control. During
a long history of sunflower cultivation, several major breakthroughs in breeding
for resistance to diseases and pests were made. Recent breakthrough in sunflower
genomics and availability of genome data of both sunflower and its pathogens opens
up the new possibilities for introduction of biotic stress resistance into cultivated
sunflower. In the light of changes made over the history and the recent findings we
discuss new tools available for designing sunflower crop resilient to biotic stresses.

u uslovima sredine.
One of the measures to mitigate the effects of extreme weather events is breeding to improve the adaptability of sunflower to different growing conditions. This study aimed to examine the influence of different years and locations on oil yield in 12 standard, oil sunflower hybrids. Experimental trials were set up during four vegetation seasons (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021) in 52 environments (in two years at 15 locations, once at 14 and once at 8). Sunflower hybrid NS Ronin (G7) was distinct as the most stable, followed by high oil yield and considered adaptable to environmental conditions differences. Stable hybrids with high oil yield were also hybrids NS Kiril (G9), NS Providence (G11) and NS Zmaj (G12). The achieved results of oil yield of the mentioned hybrids and their adaptability in different environments justify the trust placed in them by sunflower producers in Serbia and abroad.

AB - In a global climate change scenario crop varieties with increased tolerance to drought, heat and other abiotic stresses are needed. So far, at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops many different studies for testing the existing varieties to these stresses were performed, but there was no breeding program for active development of tolerant varieties. Using mutation breeding we will try to develop wheat and barley varieties with incorporated drought and heat tolerance in order to be more adaptive to the changing climate.

produktivnosti NS hibrida suncokreta u mreži mikroogleda izvedenih u Srbiji tokom 2020.
godine. U
mikroogledima je ispitivano 7 hibrida suncokreta na 14 lokaliteta. Prema rezultatima
mikroogleda, srednje vrednosti prinosa semena NS hibrida suncokreta bile su značajno iznad
višegodišnjeg republičkog proseka koji iznosi 2,63 t/ha.
