AB - For an agricultural region such as the Vojvodina Province in northern Serbia, soil quality
monitoring is very important. Enzymatic activities are proposed as good indicators as they respond to even the slightest changes in the soil. This study aimed to analyze the enzymatic activity levels across three different soil types in Vojvodina and to examine their connection to soil chemical properties and land use. All soil types (chernozem, vertisol, solonchak) were sampled at nine locations, each with 3 field plots. The activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase, dehydrogenase, and catalase were measured in samples, as well as the selected chemical properties. Results showed differences in enzymatic activity across different soil types and land use. The most active enzymes in vertisol were acid phosphatase and β-glucosidase; in solonchak, it was alkaline phosphatase; in chernozem, it was dehydrogenase. A high correlation between enzymatic activities and certain soil chemical properties (pH reaction, organic matter, organic carbon, total nitrogen) was also observed, underlining the existence of a relationship between different soil components. The highest determined correlation was between acid phosphatase and pH (r=-0.7), alkaline phosphatase and total nitrogen (r=0.7), and organic matter (r=0.72); the obtained correlations were found to be statistically significant.

AB - This study examined the influence of compost application on alterations in soil organic matter levels and the content of labile organic matter fractions in soil during maize sowing. Due to the lack of organic fertilizers, industrial compost is being investigated as an alternative. The research aims to identify relevant soil quality and fertility indicators and their effects on agricultural production. Short-term compost application as an organic fertilizer may increase the content of labile organic matter fractions in the soil, especially in less fertile plots. The results indicate a significant influence of compost application on soil quality, confirming its role as a nutrient source and enhancer of soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. This highlights its potential for preserving soil quality and supporting agricultural production.

U cilju globalne procene stanja zemljišta pod vinogradima ispitane su fizičke, hemijske i mikrobiološke osobine zemljišta i u vinogradarskom rejonu Vranje.
AB - Modern agricultural production implies irrational use of large amounts of pesticides, which impairs the quality and fertility of agricultural soil. High concentrations of heavy metals in the soil pose a great risk to agroecosystems and wildlife, and the most common cause of pollution is anthropogenic impact and inadequate use of chemicals. Due to long-term and intensive application of copper-based fungicides, soils under vineyards is particularly vulnerable to pollution by this metal. The use of copper-based fungicides is often associated with reduced activity of microorganisms and changes in the structure of microbial communities. In order to globally assess the condition of the soil under vineyards physical, chemical and microbiological properties of the soil in the wine-growing region of Vranje were examined. The abundance of microorganisms and dehydrogenase activity in the control plots indicate that the method of plot utilization did not affect the microbiological parameters of the soil. The diversity, abundance and activity of microorganisms depended primarily on the pH reaction and physical and chemical properties of the soil.

AB - Grey mould, which is caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers., is among the most damaging diseases of cultivated plants worldwide. The use of fungicides dominates in the protection of tomatoes against grey mould. Due to the emergence of resistance of pathogens to the active ingredients of fungicides, the possibility of using bacteria of the genus Bacillus was studied. A total of 666 isolates were isolated from different agricultural soils, and a preliminary screening dual culture
test with Alternaria dauci was done. A total of 77 isolates were dual culture tested against Fusarium tricinctum and F. proliferatum. Based on preliminary dual culture testing, eight Bacillus isolates were selected for testing their biological potential against two isolates of B. cinerea. The effect of Bacillus spp. isolates was studied for seed germination and plant growth promotion (PGP) on the seedlings of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Using molecular identification (16S rDNA), five bacterial isolates were identified as Bacillus subtilis, two isolates as B. amyloliquefaciens, and one
isolate as B. pumilus. Using the Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, two fungal isolates from an infected leaf and a tomato fruit were identified as B. cinerea. The results of the dual culture test showed that eight bacterial isolates could significantly inhibit the growth of B. cinerea mycelia from 50% to 80%. Two isolates B. amyloliquefaciens 28.3 and B. amyloliquefaciens 21/IV increased seed germination by 85.66% and 86.16%, respectively, compared to the control (82.66%). All bacterial isolates positively affected the morphological parameters of the seedlings. In the greenhouse experiment, three isolates B. subtillis 20.10, B. amyloliquefaciens 28.3, and B. amyloliquefaciens 21/IV and their mixture increased all measured PGP parameters. Isolates Bac 20.10 and Bac 28.3 reduced the severity of grey mould disease by 27.47% and 30.36%, respectively. These results show that Bacillus isolates have the potential for biological control of grey mould; also, that they have a positive effect on the growth of tomato plants.

AB - Continental halophytic grasslands are known for performing of range of ecosystem services especially remarkable in the regions where they are much distributed – in arid and semi-arid areas. Continental halophytic grasslands of the Central and South-East Europe are not considered as favourable for arable farming, however, traditional animal husbandry plays a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and preserving these natural habitats. The particular interest of this study is the assessment of the chemical composition of biomass and the quality of insufficiently studied halophytic grassland communities of the central Balkans. In addition, the differences in pastoral value were monitored along the geographical gradient, i.e., between grasslands situated in the Pannonian plain (grasslands of Alliance Puccinellion limosae) and those distributed on the south Serbia (Alliance Festucion pseudovinae). The study was carried out at 18 representative sites, focusing on the saline grasslands of the two distinct regions – on the north and on the south of Serbia. The obtained results show that the halophytic grasslands have satisfying quality characteristics (average values: dry matter - 93.67%, crude protein - 8.66%, cellulose - 30.36%, crude fat - 2.27%) compared with other studied grasslands of saline habitats. There were no significant differences in quality and chemical composition of grasslands of the two regions, despite differences in floristic composition, indicating that salinity is the key determinant for pastoral value of the halophytic vegetation. The certain variations were attributed to the specific floristic composition related to ecological conditions and halophytic community characteristics.

AB - The impact of land use on soil properties is well documented and marked as the dominant anthropogenic pressure resulting in soil degradation. Nowadays, the natural composition of the land is preserved on very small areas, most often as part of protected natural assets. The aim of this paper is to provide a global and fast assessment of the impact of land use on land characteristics on the example of the Municipality of Beočin. The paper compares the land of the municipality under agricultural crop production and the forest land of the National Park (NP). The way of land use affected the soil pH reaction. In forest soil pH reaction varies in the range of 3.42 to 5.50, while in agricultural land in the range of 6.42 to 7.45. Consequently, the content of free carbonates in forest land is less than 0.5%, while in agricultural land at one location of the meadow the content is less than 0.5%, and in other arable land in the range of 4.3 to as much as 33.9%. Forest land is significantly richer in organic matter (average 4.28%) compared to agricultural land (1.86%).

AB - Due to the very favourable soil and climatic conditions, the Župa of Aleksandrovac is well known as a wine-growing region, which produces high quality and top wines. In addition to vines, in this region are suitable conditions for vegetable production, especially gherkins. Soil fertility is readily available amounts of plant nutrients in the soil. The System of soil fertility control and fertilizer use, founded in 1980, includes the control of all factors that determine soil fertility and the effect of fertilizers, actually through nutrition affect the growth, development and yield of plants, as well as measures to achieve high and stable production, with the application of economy and environmental protection. Basic chemical properties such as pH value and calcium carbonate content are factors that do not change significantly in a short period of time, such as one vegetation. However, a slight increase in pH was observed in all samples. This can be explained by the use of physiologically alkaline fertilizers, since the soil in this region is slightly acidic and neutral.

To se može objasniti upotrebom fiziološki alkalnih đubriva, s obzirom da je zemljište u ovom rejonu blago kiselo i neutralno., Due to the very favourable soil and climatic conditions, the Župa of Aleksandrovac is well known as a wine-growing region, which produces high quality and top wines. This can be explained by the use of physiologically alkaline fertilizers, since the soil in this region is slightly acidic and neutral.",

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the structure of vertisol, the aggregate distribution, and the stability of structural aggregates. The investigation was conducted in the municipality of Smederevo in eastern Serbia. At ten locations, disturbed samples, as well as soil samples for structure analysis were taken. The distribution of aggregates shows the high amount of macro aggregates, low content of aggregates 2-3 mm size, and according to the structural coefficient satisfactory structure. The stability of macroaggregates to dispersion by water in the arable layer of vertisol is excellent. The results of this research could be used in cultivation practices planning since there is a possibility of improving the structure of vertisol.

AB - All processes involved in metal homeostasis must be coordinated to provide sufficient, but not toxic, concentrations of important bioelements, and to minimize detrimental effects of toxic metals. Our previous studies dealing with the exposure of O. nubilalis non-diapausing larvae to dietary Cd demonstrated that exposure to higher concentrations of Cd caused delay in the development of larvae, induced oxidative stress and also induced defense mechanisms against the toxic effects of Cd. The aim of the present study was to evaluate how acute and chronic exposure of O. nubilalis larvae to increased concentrations of dietary Cd affected the balance of important bioelements. The concentration of bioelements was analyzed in larvae (after short-term exposure) and pupae (after long-term exposure). The short-term exposure of final instar larvae (L5) to Cd did not affect significantly the concentration of any of the analyzed bioelements, while the long-term exposure of developing larvae to higher concentrations of Cd caused increase in the concentrations of Ca, Mg and Na in pupae. The bioaccumulation factor, calculated for bioelements after long-term exposure to Cd, was higher for the most bioelements in groups fed with diet containing higher concentrations of Cd, except K which displayed the opposite trend. Pearson correlation coefficient showed positive correlations between Cd and Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Cu and Zn, while negative correlation was observed between Cd and K. The results indicate that impact on the balance of important bioelements might be one of the mechanisms of cadmium toxicity and certainly raise numerous questions for future research.

AB - Halomorphic (or saline) soils, are characterized by high concentrations of soluble salts or sodium, or both. Saline soils have unfavorable agricultural properties but provide the natural habitats for a variety of highly specialized plants, animals, and other organisms. It is these special interactions that create the typical landscape of saline soils, known as “slatina”. The aim of this study is to assess and evaluate the geotouristic potential of six of the most attractive slatina sites in the Vojvodina region, Northern Serbia: Jegrička, Slano Kopovo, Rusanda, Okanj, Pečena slatina, and Pašnjaci Velike Droplje. Overall, all analyzed sites have significant tourism potential, based on both natural and tourist values. In addition to the tourism potentials, analyzed sites have high value as a natural endemic ecosystem inhabited with highly specialized plants and birds.

AB - Long Beach, situated in southern Montenegro, is subject to considerable biogenic and abiogenic influences. Thus, analyzing total heavy metal content in soil and plants in this region is, while challenging, highly important in order to assess the level for determining the soil degradation level and the phytoremediation potential of naturally growing salt marsh species. This area together with a Bojana river and backshore forms a real vegetation mosaic where habitats of various types coexist. Therefore, it represents good model system. In the present study, the levels of As, Al, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb and Zn in coastal soils as well as in eight salt marsh plants: Bolboschoenus maritimus, Juncus acutus, Juncus anceps, Juncus articulatus, Juncus gerardii, Juncus maritimus, Scirpus holoschoenus and Schoenus nigricans, were investigated in order to identify the plant species that can be used for the remediation of polluted sites, especially those located along the coastline. The obtained results show that species J. gerardii, J. articulatus and B. maritimus can be clearly separated from J. acutus, J. anceps, J. maritimus, S. holoschoenus and Sh. nigricans based on the degree of heavy metal accumulation in various organs. Moreover, analyses revealed that the bioaccumulation factor of underground organs is significantly higher relative to that of the aboveground parts for almost all investigated metals and species. The bioaccumulation factor had the highest value in the underground organs of J. gerardii and B. maritimus, where a value of 3.37 was measured for B and 2.54 for Hg, respectively. Hence, as all investigated species are “underground accumulators” for most of the analyzed metals, they could be useful for phytostabilization and phytoremediation of B and Hg in particular. Moreover, each plant species can be used in the phytoremediation process targeting specific heavy metals.

AB - Due to specific soil properties and management practices, soils in vineyards are sensitive to degradation. The aims of this study were to examine (i) the state of soil organic carbon (SOC) in vineyards compared to other agricultural land, (ii) the influence of different fertilization strategies and soil type on SOC content and (iii) the rate of SOC change over time and potential of deep tillage for SOC preservation in subsoil. The study was carried out at 16 representative vineyard locations of the Tri Morave region, which represents the largest vine growing region in Serbia. The analyzed area included 56 vineyard plots. Results showed that SOC stocks in the topsoil and subsoil were lower than the average for agricultural land in Serbia. The soil type was an important predictor of carbon storage in the topsoil. An adequate application of inorganic fertilizers or green manure combined with farmyard manure initially resulted in the highest SOC contents. Continuous application of inorganic fertilizer without organic amendments has led to a decrease of SOC in topsoil. High rates of SOC stock change in topsoil accompanied a rapid reduction of SOC in the earlier stage of cultivation. In all investigated subsoils, SOC increased, except for unfertilized vineyards. Deep tillage has the potential to preserve SOC in the deeper soil layer and prevent carbon loss from the topsoil. More attention should be paid to the soil conservation practices to meet environmental sustainability of viticulture.

AB - Intensive crop cultivation systems require continuous monitoring of irrigation water quality as well as the control of physical and chemical soil properties. In view of the ongoing climate change and a dramatic decrease in soil organic matter content, the use of low quality irrigation water and its adverse effects on soil, cultivated plants and irrigation equipment must not be overlooked. The aim of this paper was to evaluate general quality of irrigation water from the different water intake sources in the Vojvodina Province. The paper presents the results of irrigation water quality, collected during 2018 and 2019. The research included 140 irrigation water samples obtained from three different intake structures which collect water from wells, canals or reservoirs. Water quality was assessed using the following parameters: pH value, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), ionic balance, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and residual sodium carbonate (RSC) value. Water quality diagram given by the US Salinity Laboratory (USSL) and FAO guidelines for interpretation water quality for irrigation was used. Additionally, the Nejgebauer classification for irrigation water, developed specifically for the area of Vojvodina, was used as a third classification. Based on the results of mineralization of the irrigation water, the following values of the observed parameters were determined: average pH of the analyzed water samples were 7.89, ranged from 7.14 to 9.01, while electrical conductivity values ranged from 0.10 to 3.50 dS/m, with an average of 0.85 dS/m. TDS analysis resulted in a wide range of values, from 112 mg/l to 2,384 mg/l, with an average of 529,22 mg/l. SAR values varied between 0.04–16.52 with a satisfactory average of 1.97. The USSL water classification produced similar results as FAO classification and RSC index <0, indicating that 57% of investigating samples are without concerns for irrigation use. Whereas, Nejgebauers classification and RSC index 0–1.25 shows that over 75% of analyzed samples are suitable and safe for irrigation and soil properties. Since the quality of irrigation water significantly affects plant productivity, as well as determines the chemical and physical properties of agricultural land, monitoring of water quality for irrigation is of high importance

AB - The increasing phosphorus fertilizers use in agricultural production requires monitoring of the available phosphorus content in the soil. The AL available concentration of a soil is a key index that can be used to evaluate the P supply capacity of the soil and to estimate the optimal P fertilization rate. The aim of this paper was to examine the changes in the available phosphorus content in agricultural soil of Vojvodina Province, in the framework of soil quality monitoring. The examination included 1600 samples of agricultural soils from representative sites, properly distributed in a 4x4 km squares network. The available phosphorus content was determined by spectrophotometric method in AL extract (Egner and Riehm). The results of the research were compared with the results of the previous project in 1992, in order to detect the tendency of soil quality. The results indicated that soil class with the optimal content (15-25 mg/100 g) covered the largest area (21.4%), while the smallest area (5.4%), included soil with a toxic content (< 100 mg/100 g). The area of soil with very high to harmful content (50-100 mg/100 g) amounted to 5.8%. Compared to results from 1992, the amount of available phosphorus increased in all types of soil by 4.67 mg/100 g, except in the humofluvisol. The area of poorly supplied and soils with phosphorus content over 50 mg/100g has been increased. Research indicated inadequate application of fertilizers compared to the previous period.

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using microbial strains as residue decomposers and to determine the effect of these strains on chemical and microbial properties in the residue-amended soil. Greenhouse experiment consisted of eight Bacillus treatments, three Trichoderma treatments, and their combination, all applied to non-sterile chernozem soil amended with wheat straw. Incorporation of wheat straw improved soil chemical and microbial properties, while the extent of residue decomposition under microbial strains was intensified. Microbial treatments
significantly affected the soil pH, the content of carbonate, total carbon, soil organic carbon, humus, and available phosphorus and potassium. Bacterial and fungal treatments also significantly influenced the total
microbial number, ammonifiers, N2-fixers, fungi, actinomycetes, oligotrophs, copiotrophs, and cellulolytic microorganisms. The effect of microbial treatments varied depending on the applied strains and examined properties, with Bacillus strains being more promising residue decomposers compared to Trichoderma strains. The most effective microbial strains could be used as
 potential decomposers of crop residues.

AB - The objective of this study was to assess the effect of biochar soil amendment (BSA) on chemical and microbial properties in different agricultural soils in Vojvodina Province. Short-term pot experiment
consisted of five biochar application doses (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3%) and five contrasting soil types (Mollic Gleysol, Eutric Cambisol, Calcaric Fluvisol, Gleyic Chernozem, and Haplic Chernozem), planted with sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The examined chemical and microbial properties were significantly influenced by soil type and
interaction of experimental factors. Significant influence of biochar on the contents of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), total nitrogen (N), total carbon (C),
soil organic carbon (SOC), humus and potassium (K) of the tested soils was observed. Biochar also significantly affected the number of azotobacters (AZB), fungi (FNG), actinomycetes (ACT) and copiotrophic bacteria (CB). The effect of BSA varied depending on the applied dose, with higher values of the examined chemical and microbial parameters at higher doses of application.
Further studies on using biochar in soils with low fertility will be necessary to establish its efficiency as an enhancer for agricultural production in Serbia.

AB - The paper presents the results of soil fertility control of the public land in AP Vojvodina. A total of 514 soil samples were collected in 2018 from the depth of 0-30cm. The majority of the collected samples (70%) had slightly alkaline reaction. Low-humus soil class was found in 54% of the samples, which indicated the need for harvest residue plowing down and organic fertilization, so as to enhance soil humus content and thus preserve soil fertility. The analysis of readily available phosphorus revealed an optimum P content in only one third, while optimum potassium content was found in all of the collected soil samples.

AB - In almost all industrially developed regions of the Russian Federation, the soil is contaminated with heavy metals (HM) often in concentrations which exceed limits of safety. This contamination causes degradation of agricultural land, which underlines the importance of the complex continuous monitoring of the dynamics of on-going changes in urban ecosystems against the background of natural processes. Quantitative assessment of the environmental sustainability of the soil according to the biological indicators of its condition is of enormous importance, in particular the balance of microbial carbon in soils, which are under varying degrees of anthropogenic pressure. Experiments were carried out to determine the phytoremediation potential of the spring rapeseed plants on soil contaminated with heavy metals. The aim of the study was to assess the respiratory activity of albic luvisol at different levels of its contamination with zinc and nickel under the conditions of a growing experiment with spring rapeseed plants. The experimental data on the respiratory activity of soil artificially contaminated with zinc and nickel in the dose range of 400-800 and 30-60 mg kg-1 of soil respectively, showed that microbial activity had a strong positive correlation with the presence of spring rapeseed plants in the vessels and weak correlation on the presence of toxic elements in the soil. According to the respiratory activity of albic luvisol, it was found that in the first 13 days of vegetation, cultivation of spring rapeseed plants had a positive effect on the sustainability of soil microbiocenosis to complex pollution with zinc and nickel.

AB - The relationship between soil carbon fractions in Chernozem soils was
assessed in soil samples of three different environments: arable soil,
grassland and oak forest. Grassland and oak forest had higher soil organic
carbon (SOC), carbon soluble in hot water (HWC), particulate organic carbon
(POC) and mineral-associated carbon (MOC) than the arable soil. The POC/MOC
ratio was lowest in arable soil, indicating a smaller carbon pool for
microbial turnover. POC increases with higher total SOC, indicating that the
preservation of organic matter depends on the renewal of labile fractions.
Our results showed that fertilization had active role in soil carbon
stabilization, while crop rotation had less effect on a soil carbon
turnover. Our result could contribute to the better understanding of SOC
fractions composition and relevance in Chernozem soil, thus could help in
selection of cropping management systems for SOC preservation. [Projects of the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, Grant no. TR031072

AB - In this study, the role of the different management strategies was investigated, to elucidate soil organic carbon (SOC) loss under the long-term winter wheat cropping. Soil samples from wheat-based cropping systems and native vegetation were analyzed to assess SOC, total nitrogen, water-stable aggregates, mean weight diameter, and the carbon management index. Tillage practices involved moldboard plowing and field cultivators. Differences in SOC contents between treatments were dependant on tillage intensity, biomass production, and fertilization. In the 0-20 cm layer, the highest SOC contents occurred in the gt 2000 mu m soil fraction that received 40 t ha(-1) farmyard manure every fourth year and the lowest SOC content occurred in the 53-250 mu m fraction in the unfertilized treatment. Manure application influenced SOC content and its distribution among soil aggregate fractions but did not affect water-stable aggregates. SOC was primarily enriched within the gt 2000 mu m aggregates, so their turnover is essential for SOC preservation. The carbon management index was highest in 20-40 cm soil depth, which emphasizes the importance of deeper soil layers in SOC conservation. In conclusion, declining SOC levels are related to tillage practices which could not be compensated by fertilization or crop rotation.

AB - The aim of this work is to show a calculation procedure for obtaining estimations for the carbon footprint of 1 kg of live weight of ewe, ram and lamb at the farm gate, taking into account regional typological features of agricultural production in agroecosystems. The methodology of carbon footprint (CF) calculation is based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology developed for agricultural products. Results revealed that in modern technology of sheep breeding, 21.41 kg CO2 e was emitted on average per kg of body weight of ewe, 19.13 kg CO2 e was emitted on average per kg of body weight of ram, 3.2 kg CO2 e was emitted on average per kg of body weight of lamb. The main distinction of Vojvodina province is the low efficiency of fertiliser application on crop fields and manure management, storage and utilisation, which has as a result high emissions of nitrous oxide. This is the field where the implementation of intensive technologies of precise farming, manure handling, utilisation and management will significantly decrease GHG emission, with preserving yield of crops and quantity and quality of sheep of all categories.
