Tokom sezone, bilo je izuzetno toplih jesenjih i zimskih perioda, umerenih temperatura u prolećnom delu vegetacije i obilnih padavina u fazama formiranja, nalivanja i sazrevanja zrna.

AB - Winter wheat is sensitive to heat stress, which highlights the need for adaptation to hightemperature events to ensure high and stable yields. This study aimed to investigate the
chlorophyll fluorescence response of eight wheat varieties from southeastern Europe to heat
stress. Heat stress was applied during anthesis and mid-grain filling at 35/25 °C and 38/28
°C day/night for seven days, respectively. The results showed no significant differences in
Fv/Fm values between wheat plants grown under control and heat stress during anthesis on the
first, second, fifth, and seventh stress days. This absence of high-temperature effect during
anthesis indicates that temperatures of 35/25 °C for seven days are insufficient to
differentiate wheat variety reactions based on Fv/Fm measurements. However, when
temperatures were increased to 38/28 °C during mid-grain filling, a significant variation in
Fv/Fm values among the studied wheat varieties was observed. NS 40S and NS Ilina showed a
notably slower reduction in Fv/Fm over time under heat stress treatment at mid-grain filling,
exhibiting the highest Fv/Fm values on the seventh day. These varieties can be valuable sources
of heat stress tolerance and should be considered for further breeding activities under the
conditions of southeastern Europe.

AB - With the aim of optimizing the buckwheat assortment for the region of Serbia, field trials with 161 accessions of Fagopyrum sp. were set up in Backi Petrovac (45° 20' 12" N, 19° 40' 12" E) during 2023. In addition to 148 F. esculentum var. esculentum accessions, the phenotypic characterization of 30 ‘agromorphological characteristics also includes 7 var. emarginatum as well as 4 F. tataricum, 1. dibotrys and 1 F. ocutatum. Characterization of properties was carried out according to ECPGR Descriptors for buckwheat. The experiment, which was set up on May 10, was marked by extreme conditions that included high rainfall at the end of May, high temperatures at the end of June, storm at the end of July and high temperatures at the beginning of August. Such extreme conditions allowed test collection for tolerance to high temperatures and lodging. Within the analyzed collection, significant phenotypic variability was noted for all selected traits. Some of the traits were strongly affected by the extreme conditions such as high temperatures of over 40 °C during the generative phase of plant development which completely destroyed all accessions except F. esculentum, from which 26 were also significantly damaged. Additionally, a large part of the collection (93 accessions) showed a pronounced sensitivity to lodging and as such are not suitable for mechanized harvesting. Nineteen accessions showed partial lodging and they could be used with partial yield reduction.

AB - The causal agent of yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici) gained special attention in Serbia since the 2013/2014 production year, although its presence in the genetic collection at Rimski šančevi was noted by Jevtić et al. as early as 1997. Considering the mode of transmission of the yellow rust and its high ability to overcome host plant resistance, the aim of this study is to highlight the factors that influence the dynamics of its occurrence and the main challenges in controlling this pathogen in Serbia. The climatic factors in 2023 favored occurrence of wheat yellow rust in Serbia, similar to 2014, 2016, and 2018. However, it should be noted that the race composition of this pathogen can change from year to year, and the susceptibility and/or resistance of wheat genotypes to yellow rust depends on the combined effect of abiotic and biotic stressors. The complexity of factors influencing the level of susceptibility or resistance breakdown in wheat towards yellow rust has also been confirmed in the genetic collection at Rimski šančevi in 2023 when a significantly higher number of genotypes (80%) were infected with yellow rust compared to previous years, with a disease index exceeding 41%. The percentage of genotypes showing susceptibility reaction to yellow rust (DI>41%) was 47.7% in 2016 and 43% in 2018.

AB - Triticale (xTriticosecale), based on crosses between wheat (Triticum aestivum) and rye (Secale cereale), is considered as underutilised crop in Europe being grown on acreages and in quantities much less than dominant crops. However, its potential as silage, food and energy crop, its yield potential, and its tolerance to abiotic and biotic stress, has yet to be fully explored. An experiment established within the CROPDIVA project aimed at introducing triticale in many distinct agricultural regions of Europe. The objective of this study was to evaluate performance of diverse triticale genotypes that would be used to shape resilient agroecosystems better adapted to climate change, with enhanced food diversity and added ecological and economical values. In total, 280 triticale breeding lines or cultivars were chosen from 29 European breeding programmes, to ensure a broad genetic background for the intended genome wide association analysis for relevant traits. The field trial was carried out at the experimental station near Novi Sad, Serbia (N 45°19'21.212", E19°50'50.341") for two years in an augmented design in 5 m2 plots, with 5 checks in 4 replications. After winter performance, plant density and spike length were considerably higher in the second experimental year. Thousand-kernel weight and test weight also varied between the seasons. The heading time occurred later in 2022, but with a shorter heading window than in 2023. These overall performances reflected on lower average grain yield in 2022 (5.4 t/ha) than in 2023 (6.5 t/ha). Higher values for most of the measured traits in 2022-23 could be attributed to the optimal sowing time, compared to much later sowing date in the first year (December 2021). Additionally, weather conditions were more favourable for crop development in the second season, resulting in good
germination rate (70% to 95%), good plot density (310 - 630 spikes per m2), good standing ability and homogeneity for most of the genotypes. Four genotypes (Danko34, NORD6_7512, Danko48 and Lumaco) with the fresh yield above 10 t/ha in 2023 and above 6 t/ha in 2022 and with good performance of other agronomic traits could be an interesting material for further exploration.

AB - Hull-less barley is an underutilized crop, mostly used for human consumption, representing less than 2% of the entire barley production in both Europe and Serbia. CROPDIVA's priority is to select and improve of hull-less barley breeding for many important characteristics related to yield and quality. The consumption of naked barley has significant positive effects on human health. A total of 360 spring naked barley genotypes was used to evaluate genetic variability. This panel comprised of 300 diverse accessions from IPK genebank collection and 10 standards representing commercial and well-adapted cultivars from the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, and Serbia. The trial was conducted at Rimski sancevi (N45°19" E 19°50') in Serbia, following soybean as the previous crop. The size of micro plots was 1 m2 setup in an augmented block design using 10 standards in six repetitions. The sowing time was on 10th March using standard agronomic practices. During the season, the following traits were measured: date ofemergence, canopy size using Canopeo application during growth and developmental phases (G511,GS31, GS59), heading time, straw length, lodging, and yield. After harvesting season, we will beginmeasuring yield component traits and quality parameters such as: total biomass, spike number, grain weight, thousand grain weight, grains per spike, harvest index, specific weight, grain colour — staining, treshability, beta-glucan, and nitrogen content. Canopeo values in GS11 (first leaf unfolded - ligule visible), in GS31 (first node detectable) and in GS59 (ear completely emerged above flag leaf ligule) growth stages ranged from 0.48 to 4.99, from 25.7 to 82.02 and 10.95 and 94.01, respectively. Heading day occurred within 23 days’ time window, from 17 May to 10 June. The average straw length was 66 cm, varied from to 30 cm to 95 cm. Approximately one third of the accessions was prone to lodging. Preliminary results have shown that the selected IPK collection possesses significant diversity which canserve as a good basis in a further hull-less breeding program.

AB - Traditional farming practices, focussing on cultivating single crops have detrimental effects such as high input of agrochemicals, soil erosion, and the development of pesticide-resistant pests. Furthermore, the use and production of nitrogen fertilisers in such systems can lead to the release of CO, contributing to climate change. Hence, agroecosystems that combine robust crop yields with reduced resource inputs are needed and there is a rising interest in cereal-legume intercropping. However, challenges remain, including the difficulty of managing the variable proportions of each species in the harvested mixture and the limited understanding of how individual crops perform within intercropping systems. The aim of this study was to estimate how intercropping of hull-less barley and oat with pea contribute to better crop performance under climatic conditions of Serbia. The trials were conducted at Rimski Šančevi (Vojvodina, North province of Serbia) using a RCBD design with four replicates. Sowing densities were 30% (hull-ess barley or oats):70% (pea). On average, the yield of hull-less barley (Golijat) and oats (Dunav) in 2022 and 2023 was notably higher in pure stands compared to intercropping practices.

AB - Triticale (xTriticosecale Wittmack) is a hybrid obtained by crossing wheat (Triticum sp.) and rye (Secale sp.). Triticale possesses favorable agronomic characteristics compared to wheat and rye, including suitability for cultivation in poor and acidic soils or under cold conditions. The causal agent of yellow rust in triticale (P striformis f. sp. tritici, Pst) is one of the pathogens responsible for significant yield and quality losses. An aggressive race of P, first discovered in Europe in 2006 on the island of Bornholm on triticale, has become common in widely grown triticale varieties in Germany and Scandinavia. Although the race belongs to P striiformis sp. tritici, it has never been found on winter wheat varieties in Europe. The aggressive triticale race has led to yield losses of up to 100% in Scandinavia, where controlling triticale epidemics in organic production has proven challenging. It is worth noting that Pst races Warrior and Kranich, which caused significant wheat yield losses in Europe since 2011, were also detected on triticale. During the 2022/2023 growing season on locality Rimski Šančevi (Vojvodina, North Province of Serbia) yellow rust was recorded on triticale in Serbia for the the first time.

AB - Parastagonospora nodorum (teleomorph Leptosphaeria nodorum) is the causal agent of septoria nodorum blotch (SNB). It was first discovered on wheat in 1845. and is common in regions with relatively high or periodically high rainfall. P. nodorum causes symptoms on all above-ground parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, glumes, and awns. The pathogen overwinters on wheat crop residues in the form of pseudothecia and pycnidia. Ascospores released from pseudothecia typically serve as the primary source of inoculum, but conidia released from pycnidia on crop residues can also infect seedlings. Additionally, the fungus is known to survive on seeds in the form of dormant mycelium, making infected seeds a potential source of primary infection. During the 2022/2023 growing season, precipitation totals in April (63.9 mm) and May (124.8 mm) exceeded seventeen-year averages, creating conditions conducive to occurence of SNB. Microscopic examination of lesions on leaves of wheat variety revealed the presence of the sexual stage (L. nodorum) for the first time in Serbia. The asexual stage (P. nodorum) was observed on infected ears of different varieties. This study highlights the need for more attention in monitoring conditions that could lead to outbreak SNB in wheat production areas in Serbia.

AB - In the past 40 years, the causal agent of yellow rust in barley, Psh (Puccinia
striiformis f. sp. hordei Erikss), has been registered worldwide. However, it has
caused the greatest damage in areas with cold and humid climates, where yield
losses reached up to 70%. Races of P. striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), the causal
agent of yellow rust in wheat, are usually not found in barley, and those that
infect barley (Psh) are rarely virulent on wheat. However, there are barley genotypes that can be infected by certain Pst races. The causal agent of yellow rust in
triticale (Pst) leads to significant yield losses and quality reduction in triticale. It
is important to note that the Pst races (Warrior and Kranich), which have caused
enormous wheat yield losses in Europe since 2011, have also been registered on
triticale. The aggressive race of triticale (since 2006) and the Warrior and Kranich
races (since 2011) have become prevalent over large areas of Europe within one
or only a few years. Despite the occurrence of yellow rust on wheat in Serbia in
previous years, it has not been registered on barley and triticale. This is the first

AB - Wheat (mainly common, soft wheat Triticum aestivum but also durum, hard wheat Triticum turgidum) ranks third in the global annual production of commodities. It is the world’s largest crop in terms of harvested area (FAO, 2012) and considered as the most important field crops in the world. It provides more than 20% of the calorific intake for almost two-thirds of the human population. Wheat also contributes to nearly 30% of the world grain production and 50% of the world grain trade (Akter & Rafiqul Islam, 2017). Underutilized cereal crops such as oat, hull-less barley, triticale, and the pseudocereal buckwheat are getting more attention in recent years due to their ability to better cope with abiotic/biotic stresses. Underutilized cereal crops also have potentials to provide important health-promoting compounds and quality traits for sustainable food and feed production.

AB - Ramularia collo-cygni (Rcc) is a causal agent of Ramularia leaf spot (RLS) that emerged as an economically important seed-borne disease in the last 30 years. RLS causes yield losses of up to 35 % and it is reported as a serious threat of barley production all over the world. Although the fungus co-exists with the host plant from early development stages the RLS symptoms occur late in the season as rectangular reddish-brown necrotic spots usually surrounded by a chlorotic halo. RLS symptoms are visible on both sides of the leaf blade and are very hard to be distinguished from other barley diseases or physiological leaf spots without using molecular techniques. Difficulties in distinguishing RLS from other abiotic and biotic factors of leaf spotting complex, asymptomatic phase of fungal development, and lack of regulations controlling RLS distribution through barley seed trade are major reasons that could jeopardize RLS management and barley production. During the visual inspection of barley production in 2016. in Kumanovo and Bitola the symptoms of RLS were observed on leaves, spikes and awns.

AB - Despite the ongoing evolution of wheat pathogens due to the selection pressures of agro-ecological conditions, many studies have often overlooked the combined impact of both biotic and abiotic factors on disease occurrence. From 2016 to 2023, a comprehensive screening of obligate pathogens, including B. graminis f. sp. tritici, P. graminis f. sp. tritici, P. triticina, and P. striiformis f. sp. tritici, was carried out. This screening was conducted on a phenotyping platform encompassing 2715 winter wheat genotypes and their wild relatives, both with and without resistant genes (Lr, Yr, and Sr) for rust diseases. The data were analyzed using PCAmix, best subsets regression, and linear regression modeling. The findings from this study reveal that the plant reactions to leaf and yellow rust infections is far from straightforward. It is heavily influenced not only by prevalent rust races and climatic factors that impact pathogen life cycles but also by variations in the susceptibility reactions of wheat genotypes to the broader agro-ecological conditions. We also observed a tendency for leaf rust and yellow rust to coexist within the same host plant, even though yellow rust is typically considered more aggressive. We reported for the first time genes related to yellow rust resistance breakdown in Serbia in 2023. Lastly, we underscored the importance of investigating resistance responses to rust diseases not exclusively through the interrelation between resistance genes and pathogen virulence, but also by considering how plants respond to the combined stresses of abiotic and biotic factors. Consequently, our study sets the groundwork for further research into how plants respond to multiple stressors and contributes for further investigations related with effective integrated rust management.

AB - Widespread usage of intercropping systems has been limited because of a lack of knowledge about the key factors that affect the performance of intercrop components. We used general linear modelling to explain the effect of different cropping systems on the relationships among yield, thousand kernel weight (TKW), and crude protein of cereal crops under the same agro-ecological conditions and naturally occurring inocula of obligate pathogens. The results of our study showed that the yield variation under extreme fluctuations in climatic conditions could be lowered through intercropping cultivation. The disease indices of leaf rust and powdery mildew were highly dependent on the type of cultivation. The relationships among the levels of pathogenic infection and yield performances were not straightforward and were highly dependent on the yielding potentials of the cultivars. Our study indicated that changes in yield, TKW, and crude protein, as well as their relationships during intercropping cultivation, were cultivar specific and, therefore, not the same among all cereal crops exposed to the same agro-ecological conditions.

AB - Monitoring the health status of narrow-leaved ash tree seedlings (forest office Morović, locality Vinična) in the early spring of 2015, after the catastrophic floods in May 2014, revealed presence of large dark necrotic areas on 1–2 year old sprouts. The isolation of the fungal pathogen was done by standard phytopathological protocols. Three representative isolates (K41, K42 and K78) were preliminary detected and purified by a single-spore technique for further morphological, molecular analyses and pathogenicity testing. Morphological characteristics classified the isolates as Fusarium tricinctum. Tested isolates on narrow leaved ash sprouts caused reddish brown elongated necrotic lesions averaged 20.1 mm. Two marker genes, translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS1), were used in this study. Using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) searching engine, nucleotide sequences were compared to all related sequences. Alignement score resulted in 98.9% identities with F. tricinctum for isolate K78, while isolates K41 and K42 showed 94.1% and 94.3% identities with F. tricinctum complex respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of F. tricinctum pathogen infection on flood stressed narrow-leaved ash trees in Serbia.

abstract = "Monitoring the health status of narrow-leaved ash tree seedlings (forest office Morović, locality Vinična) in the early spring of 2015, after the catastrophic floods in May 2014, revealed presence of large dark necrotic areas on 1–2 year old sprouts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of F. tricinctum pathogen infection on flood stressed narrow-leaved ash trees in Serbia., Poljski jasen (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl.) je drvenasta vrsta rasprostranjena u nizijskim šumama u Evropi. AB - The utilization of production systems with reduced chemical input renewed the interest in Ustilago nuda and Pyrenophora graminea. The investigations of seed fungicide treatments are more related to their efficacy than to their contribution to yield gain. The data were collected from research and development trials on fungicide efficacy against U. nuda and P. graminea conducted from 2014 to 2020 in Serbia. Partial least squares, multiple stepwise regression and best subset regression were used for statistical modeling. The total number of plants infected with U. nuda and P. graminea per plot differed significantly in the seven-year period. Shifts in the predominance of one pathogen over the other were also shown. Temperature, total rainfall and relative humidity in flowering time (p < 0.001) influenced the occurrence of both pathogens. The strongest impact on yield loss was observed for temperature in the phenological phases of leaf development (p = 0.014), temperature in flowering time (p < 0.001) and total number of plants infected with U. nuda and P. graminea per plot (p < 0.001). Our results indicated that regression models consisting of both biotic and abiotic factors were more precise in estimating regression coefficients. Neither fungicidal treatment had a stable contribution to yield gain in the seven-year period.

Ovu godinu obeležili su povoljni vremenski uslovi tokom jesenjeg perioda, značajne temperaturne varijacije pred početak prolećnog dela vegetacije, velike količine padavina i optimalni temperaturni uslovi tokom faza intenzivnog porasta, cvetanja i nalivanja zrna.

AB - Important tool for the integrated control of Fusarium head blight (FHB) is monitoring changes in the prevalence of Fusarium species and toxin production. The knowledge of factors influencing FHB infection is usually related to climatic factors, tillage practice and the level of resistance/susceptibility of wheat varieties. However, little is known on differences in reactions of varieties on members of Fusarium species complexes. In this study, F. graminearum species complex (FGSC) was monitored on two winter wheat varieties Simonida and Zvezdana, created in Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. We analyzed 83 FGSC isolates collected from 21 locations in 2019. The study included four regions in Serbia (Vojvodina, Belgrade, Southern and Eastern Serbia and Šumadija and Western Serbia). Monitoring of FGSC populations were made using species- and trichothecene-specific primers. Species specific primers were Fg16F/R and Fgr-F/Fgc-R. Trichothecene genotyping was performed using the primer sets (Tri303F/R, Tri315F/R, and Tri5F/R) for the sequences of the Tri3, and Tri5 genes. Tri-5-specific PCR assay was used to assess the genetic potential of F. graminearum isolates for mycotoxin production. We used multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), to investigate associations between Fusarium damaged kernels (FDK), location, variety, members of the FGSC, and their predisposition for mycotoxin production. On average, the FDK of Simonida was 11.8% while it was 22.1% in Zvezdana.
