AB - Wheat (mainly common, soft wheat Triticum aestivum but also durum, hard wheat Triticum turgidum) ranks third in the global annual production of commodities. It is the world’s largest crop in terms of harvested area (FAO, 2012) and considered as the most important field crops in the world. It provides more than 20% of the calorific intake for almost two-thirds of the human population. Wheat also contributes to nearly 30% of the world grain production and 50% of the world grain trade (Akter & Rafiqul Islam, 2017). Underutilized cereal crops such as oat, hull-less barley, triticale, and the pseudocereal buckwheat are getting more attention in recent years due to their ability to better cope with abiotic/biotic stresses. Underutilized cereal crops also have potentials to provide important health-promoting compounds and quality traits for sustainable food and feed production.

AB - The utilization of production systems with reduced chemical input renewed the interest in Ustilago nuda and Pyrenophora graminea. The investigations of seed fungicide treatments are more related to their efficacy than to their contribution to yield gain. The data were collected from research and development trials on fungicide efficacy against U. nuda and P. graminea conducted from 2014 to 2020 in Serbia. Partial least squares, multiple stepwise regression and best subset regression were used for statistical modeling. The total number of plants infected with U. nuda and P. graminea per plot differed significantly in the seven-year period. Shifts in the predominance of one pathogen over the other were also shown. Temperature, total rainfall and relative humidity in flowering time (p < 0.001) influenced the occurrence of both pathogens. The strongest impact on yield loss was observed for temperature in the phenological phases of leaf development (p = 0.014), temperature in flowering time (p < 0.001) and total number of plants infected with U. nuda and P. graminea per plot (p < 0.001). Our results indicated that regression models consisting of both biotic and abiotic factors were more precise in estimating regression coefficients. Neither fungicidal treatment had a stable contribution to yield gain in the seven-year period.

Ovu godinu obeležili su povoljni vremenski uslovi tokom jesenjeg perioda, značajne temperaturne varijacije pred početak prolećnog dela vegetacije, velike količine padavina i optimalni temperaturni uslovi tokom faza intenzivnog porasta, cvetanja i nalivanja zrna.

AB - Tracking the distribution of Fusarium species and the detection of changes in toxin production
provides epidemiological information that is essential for Fusarium head blight (FHB) management.
Members of Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) were characterized using species
and trichothecene-specific primers. Associations between members of the FGSC, cereal crop species
(wheat, rye, triticale, and oat), seeding time (winter and spring), type of cultivation (monocrop and
intercrop) and chemotype grouping were investigated with multiple correspondence analysis and
multiple regression modeling. We found that triticale and oat were more related to isolates classified
into F. graminearum s. lato than with other isolates. In contrast, wheat and rye were more associated
with F. graminearum s. stricto. Cereal crop species affected the frequencies of F. graminearum s. stricto
(p = 0.003) and F. graminearum s. lato (p = 0.08) and unidentified isolates with morphological characteristics
like those of FGSC members (p = 0.02). The effectiveness of species-specific primers was 60.3%
(Fg16F/R) and 76.2% (FgrF/FgcR), and the effectiveness of primer sets for the trichothecene genotyping
of the Tri5 and Tri3 genes was 100% and 90.6%, respectively. The decrease in Fusarium-damaged
kernel values in the wheat–pea intercropping system indicated that intercropping systems have the
potential to control FHB.

AB - Factors influencing Fusarium head blight (FHB) occurrence and yield losses
in winter wheat have extensively been studied through the years; however, reports on the
relationship between FHB traits and yield are conflicting. In addition, studies neglected the
relationship between FHB traits and thousand-kernel weight (TKW). This study evaluated the
variability in the relationship between FHB traits, TKW, and yield under field conditions, using
40 commercial winter wheat cultivars differing in resistance/susceptibility to FHB. In general,
the FHB index had greater relation to yield, while Fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK) was more
related to TKW. The relationship between yield, TKW, FHB index, and FDK was also determined
by resistance/susceptibility of winter wheat cultivars. Fusarium-damaged kernels influenced yield
more in moderately resistant (R2 = 43 %) than in susceptible/moderately susceptible cultivars (R2
= 27 %). The influence of the FHB index on TKW was weak (R2 = 9 %) in susceptible/moderately
susceptible cultivars and in moderately resistant ones (R2 = 1 %). The potential to predict TKW
from yield under pathogen pressure was limited due to the moderate-to-positive correlation
between yield and TKW (r = 0.349, p < 0.001). This study provides insights into factors that
influence TKW under FHB pathogen pressure and gives direction to more efficient and reliable
investigations on grain resistance toward FHB.

AB - The harvest index of grain can be used as indicator for the potential yield of crop. The aim of this study was to determine the variation of the harvest index for wheat and triticale and differences in monocrops and intercrops systems of cultivation under different field environmental conditions. The experiment, carried out in field conditions for two consecutive years, was designed according to a randomized block system so that each species was sown in two cultivation systems as a single crop and a combined crop (wheat + pea and triticale + pea) in four replicates. The results show that, in the first year of the experiment, the value of the harvest index varied from 32.5% (triticale + pea) to 39.3% (wheat monocrop), while in the second year of the research, the value of the harvest index varied from 26.4% (wheat + pea) and 28.1% (triticale + pea). As for the components of harvest index, values of weight of grains spike-1 and weight of total above ground biomass were higher in intercrops than in monocrops system of cultivation. It can be concluded that the intercropping of cereals (triticale and wheat) and forage crops (pea) provided positive effects on weight of grains spike-1 and weight of total above ground biomass and does not diminish harvest index when compared to standard system of cultivation.

komponenti žetvenog indeksa, vrednosti mase zrna po klasu i mase ukupne nadzemne biomase
bile su veće u združenom sistemu nego u pojedinačnom sistemu gajenja. Može se zaključiti da je
združeni usev žitarica (tritikale i pšenica) i krmnog bilja (grašak) dao pozitivne efekte na masu

AB - Powdery mildew is a common, economically important disease in the wheat growing area
of Serbia. A large-scale virulence survey of its causal agent Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici population was performed in the period 1995–2013. A total of 1013 isolates were recovered from the collected chasmothecial samples. Among them, 862 unique pathotypes were identified using a differential set of 20 wheat lines with known powdery mildew (Pm) resistant genes. The pathogen was highly diverse. Number of virulence genes (virulence complexity) per isolate was large, supporting a constant need to extend the differential set of wheat with newly identified Pm genes. Virulence frequencies to Pm6, Pm7, and Pm5+8 were high throughout the 19-year period, in contrast with that to Pm5+6, which was consistently at a low level. The most significant change in the population was observed for virulence to the Pm2+4b+6 gene combination, with an increasing frequency of virulence to this gene combination over the years. High virulence complexity and genetic diversity of the
population are the most influential factors for the damaging epidemics that this pathogen can cause.

AB - The influence of abiotic and biotic factors on yield loss has usually been analysed separately without considering their interactions. Consequently, the main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between FHB index, Fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK) and yield loss, while considering effect of climatic conditions and cultivar resistance/susceptibility to FHB as a coherent whole. The study was conducted over two growing seasons (2013/2014 and 2014/2015), using 25 commercial winter wheat cultivars. Fungicide-sprayed and non-sprayed treatments were applied, while corn kernels infected with F. graminearum provided an artificial source of FHB inoculum. Average FHB index of 25 cultivars in 2014 (31%) and FDK (15%) differed significantly from FHB index (10%) and FDK (5%) in 2015. Variability in FHB index and FDK was more uniformly related with yield loss of moderately resistant than it was in susceptible/moderately susceptible cultivars. Correlation of FHB index and FDK also differed between susceptible/moderately susceptible (r = 0.362, p = 0.035) and moderately resistant cultivars (r = 0.732, p = 0.001). Yield loss of susceptible/moderately susceptible cultivars caused by FHB differed less uniformly than it did in moderately resistant ones. Different responses of susceptible/moderately susceptible cultivars on FHB pressure in the same environment indicated that there might be a threshold of pathogen pressure below which a cultivar will not response with significant yield loss in cases where other requirements relevant to exhibit the cultivar's yield potential are met.

abstract = "The influence of abiotic and biotic factors on yield loss has usually been analysed separately without considering their interactions. AB - Bunt of wheat is a fungal disease that occurs worldwide. Tilletia caries is predominant in Serbia, but the presence of T. foetida and putative hybrid of T. caries and T. foetida was also reported. Quarantine species for Serbia include both T. contraversa Kühn and T. indica Mitra. In the past, common bunt had a severe impact on wheat seed production due to the economic embargo imposed on our country. Outbreaks of common bunt were usually caused by sowing undeclared seed, discontinuation of fungicide treatments, and prevalence of disease-conducive environment. Nowadays, common bunt is successfully controlled in conventional production, but the survey on the presence of Tilletia spp. shown that in 151 samples, 74 % were contaminated with < 0.1 teliospore per seed, while 4 of the 16 commercial seed samples were contaminated above the threshold level of 0.01% determined for mercantile wheat by the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade, Forestry and Water Management. These findings indicated the great potential for seed infection and contamination with Tilletia spp. in Serbia which could pose a serious trait for organic production.

AB - U Republici Srbiji i u drugim zemljama našeg regiona ozima pšenica i ječam predstavljaju kulture sa najvećim površinama u ozimoj setvi.
AB - This paper overviews the production of small grains in Serbia in the year 2019/2020. Wheat, barley, oat, rye and triticale were sown on 750,000 hectares. Even though the growing season faced severe water deficit in March and April in the northeastern Serbia, the yields surpassed the long-term average. NS varieties of small grains showed high grain yields and excellent technological quality.

AB - Reports on the effectiveness of Fusarium head blight (FHB) control measures do not follow the same pattern in different regions, and the combined effects of abiotic and biotic factors on FHB are not fully understood. Consequently, the main objective of this study was to examine divergence in susceptibility reactions of winter wheat genotypes to FHB when exposed to the combined effects of cultivation practices, cultivar properties, year and the presence of interacting Fusarium spp. as an inherent whole. Analysed data originated from 633 grain samples collected from 434 localities in an eight-year period as a part of investigations related to the develop-ment of the DONcast? Europe prediction model. This study suggests that ploughing could increase the risk of the occurrence of less frequent toxigenic Fusarium species. Stubble management generated more divergent envi-ronmental factors than no-till farming, influencing greater variability in the relationship between deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation and grain infection. The results of this study indicated differences in susceptibility reactions of varieties to FHB and suggested that more attention should be focused on the specificity of the interaction between variety and combined environmental stressors to ensure more predictive and sustainable wheat production.

AB - Monitoring changes in the prevalence of Fusarium species and toxin production is an important tool for the integrated control of Fusarium head blight (FHB). However, methods for the high-throughput screening of Fusarium populations have been developed using isolates with limited geographic origins. In this study, we used species- and trichothecene-specific primers to monitor the F. graminearum species complex (FGSC) originating from Serbia. We also tested the applicability of the primers to the surveillance of FHB. We analyzed two hundred and ten isolates collected from thirty two locations and five winter wheat varieties over a three-year period. Using multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), we investigated associations between Fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK) and location, variety, members of the FGSC, and their predisposition for mycotoxin production. The results revealed that the species-specific primers were not specific for 11% of the F. graminearum population. The primer sets were 98.5%, 95.2%, and 92.4% effective in the multilocus genotyping of Tri7, Tri3, and Tri5 genes, respectively. We found that individual wheat varieties were associated with isolates that could not be characterized using species- and trichothecene-specific primers. Alternaria spp. had a significant influence (p < 0.001) on grain infection with F. graminearum, indicating the necessity to further investigate its impact on the pathogenesis of the F. graminearum clade.

Upravo u takvim ekstremnim sezonama, kao što je 2018/19. godina, do posebnog izražaja dolazi pravilna primena tehnologije gajenja poput redukovane obrade zemlјišta, setve deklarisanog semena adaptabilnih sorti, poštovanja optimalnih rokova setve i pravovremene primene sredstava zaštite.

AB - To date, studies have usually focused on the impact of abiotic factors on the distribution of plant pathogens and have built forecast models for the prediction of pathogen outbreaks. However, the impact of the combined effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the prevalence of economically important pathogens has usually been neglected. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between powdery mildew and rusts of wheat and to examine how the combined effects of abiotic and biotic factors influence their prevalence. The study was conducted in the period 2016-2019 using the collection of 2158 genotypes of winter wheat. The most influential factors on disease indices and relationships among obligate pathogens were determined using multiple regression models and principal component analysis. The possibility of the coexistence of different rust species in the same growing season and in the same field was shown. The significant influence of fluctuations in winter temperatures on changes in the prevalence of obligate pathogens was determined. The strong impact of genotypes and their reaction on climatic elements in certain phenological stages were shown to be significant factors influencing the interactions among obligate pathogens and the predominance of one pathogen over another.

AB - The European corn borer (ECB) Ostrinia nubilalis and Fusarium ear rot Fusarium spp. pose a continuous threat to maize production worldwide. There are several reports indicating that ECB damage to maize ears promotes Fusarium ear rot infection. The aim of this study was to monitor the influence of different insecticide treatments (a.i. chlorantraniliprole, indoxacarb, and chlorantraniliprole+lambda-cyhalothrin) on the ECB and fungal diversity on maize kernels in the field in a four-year trial (2013-2016). A total of 16 different fungal genera were isolated from maize kernels, and Fusarium species were confirmed to be the dominant pathogens, present in all treatments, throughout the four years of experiments. The incidence of Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp. was established to be low. Apart from Fusarium species, the most frequent genera were: Aspergillus spp., Mortierella spp., Mucor spp., Penicillium spp., Acremonium spp. and Rhizopus spp. Treatments with chlorantraniliprole and chlorantraniliprole+lambda-cyhalothrin showed higher efficacy, though not statistically significant, compared to indoxacarb, in reducing the number of ECB larvae and damage they cause. However, no direct effect on the number of isolated fungal genera has been observed in any of the three insecticide treatments.
AB - Kukuruzni plamenac (Ostrinia nubilalis) i fuzariozna trulež klipa (Fusarium spp.) pričinjavaju najveće štete u proizvodnji kukuruza.

AB - The interactions among grain-colonizing species on wheat and their effects on incidence and severity of Fusarium head blight are usually neglected in studies. Although saprophytes can predominate over pathogenic species, studies related to the control of saprophytic mycoflora in wheat production are rare. Here we hypothesized that the infection level of Fusarium and contamination level of Alternaria spp. are significantly influenced by environmental factors and their interactions and investigated the relationship between Fusarium and Alternaria spp. under field conditions and estimate its effect on conventional wheat production, The most prevalent species associated with wheat grain were Alternaria spp. (80% in 2012 and 55% in 2013), and the second was F. graminearum (9% in 2012 and 38% in 2013). In general, varieties that are moderately resistant to Fusarium infection are less contaminated with Alternaria spp. compared to susceptible and moderately susceptible varieties. F. graminearum on Alternaria spp. had a strong antagonistic effect on moderately susceptible and susceptible varieties with P lt 0.001 using Spearman's coefficient of correlation. An infection level of F. graminearum over 25% showed antagonistic activity against Alternaria spp. under field conditions. Using prothioconazole+tebuconazole as a chemical measure to prevent F. graminearum infection on susceptible varieties can be related to an increase in the contamination level of Alternaria spp., jeopardizing the effectiveness of seed health control measures.

AB - Advantages or disadvantages of intercropping system can estimate through expression of components of yield on the base of values of productive organs (spike, pod). The aim of this work was study of variation of spike index in cereals species and pods index in pea of spring intercropping. For investigation included spring species of small grains: wheat, triticale, oat and spring legume pea. The investigation was carried out in field condition in experiment with randomised block design of 5m2 plots, with 4 replications. Each species (cereals and pea) were sown sole and in intercrops wheat+pea, triticale+pea and oat+pea. At the maturity stage used 40 plants (10 plants/replication) for determining harvest index of spike in cereal species and index of pea pods on the base of analysis of spike mass and pod mass and seed mass spike-1 and seed mass pod-1 . Seed mass spike-1 of small grains species genotypes variate in ratio of 0.85 g (wheat+pea) and 1.59 g (oat intercrops) with average 1.19 g for all crops of cereals and variant of cultivation. The spike mass variate in range of 1.37 g (triticale intercrop) and 2.23 g (wheat intercrops) with average 1.72 g for all cereals and variant of cultivation. Harvest index of spike variate between 62.5% (triticale sole) and 89.2% (oat sole). The value of spike mass was the higher in wheat intercrops than in wheat sole, while for triticale and oat spike mass is lower in intercrops. In the same of analyzed small grain species, seed mass was the higher in sole crops than in mixture with pea. The spike index, only in intercrop triticale+pea (63.2%) was slightly higher than in single crop of triticale (62.5%). Pod mass and seed mass pod-1 of pea was the higher in pea intercrops than in pea sole. The highest pod mass was in intercrop pea+triticale (0.72 g) and the least in single crop of pea (0.45 g) with average 0.62 g for all crops. The highest seed mass pod-1 was the highest intercrop pea+triticale (0.56g) and the least in monocrop of pea (0.32 g) with average 0.46 g for all crops. Harvest index of pod variate in ratio 68.0% (pea single) and 77.% in pea/triticale intercrop. Pod index of pea in mixture with each small grains species genotypes was higher than in pea's monocrop. On the base of result we can conclude that intercropping cereals + pea, have positive effect on spike and pod characteristics which values were higher in majority of studied intercrops than in monocrops.

On the base of result we can conclude that intercropping cereals + pea, have positive effect on spike and pod characteristics which values were higher in majority of studied intercrops than in monocrops., Prednosti i nedostaci združenih useva mogu se oceniti prema ispoljavanja komponenti prinosa na osnovu vrednosti produktivnih organa (klas, mahuna).
