AB  - U Srbiji je moguća proizvodnja većeg broja kako ozimih, tako i jarih energetskih biljaka. Ove vrste imaju različitu botaničku pripadnost, morfologiju i poreklo, a prema nameni mogu se klasifikovati na: uljane (uljana repica, lanik, slačice, ricinus), skrobne i šećerne (sirak, sudanska trava, kukuruz) i ligno-celulozne vrste (miskantus, konoplja). Poslednjih godina evidentno je povećanje površina u Srbiji pod energetskim usevima, ali je prinos neujednačen i u zavisnosti od godine, odnosno vremenskih uslova tokom vegetacionog perioda, što čini potrebu poznavanja tehnologije proizvodnje još značajnijom. Stanje useva i posledično prinos, su pod velikim uticajem složenih interakcija između klimatskih i zemljišnih uslova, abiotskog i biotskog stresa i tehnologije proizvodnje. Edukacijom proizvođača i daljim poboljšanjem sortimenta, tehnologije i mehanizacije, realno je očekivati povećanje površina pod uljanim vrstama za proizvodnju biogoriva u Srbiji i sigurnost proizvodnje i u uslovima klimatskih promena. U radu je dat pregled optimalnih potreba energetskih biljaka za najznačajnijim agroekološkim činiocima, kao i mera dobre poljoprivredne prakse neophodnih za produktivan rast i razvoj ovih biljaka.

AB  - Tomato is one of the most important species belonging to the Solanaceae family. Focusing on the importance of tomato in human nutrition and the problem of narrowed genetic variability, the aim of the study was to assess morphological and chemical diversity in IFVCNS germplasm collection. Twenty genotypes were analysed for the morphological and chemical fruit traits: average mass (g), length (cm), diameter (cm), pericarp thickness (mm), locules number, moisture content (%), total soluble solids (°Brix), ash content (%), total acidity (%) and pH value. Selected plant material for analysis included: landraces, traditional varieties, breeding lines and commercial varieties. Differences among tomato genotypes in all fruit traits were determined. Fruit mass and locules number had the highest coefficient of variation. The least differences between genotypes were observed in the fruit moisture content. Four principal components accounted for 90.6% of total variance or 36.5%, 24.2%, 19.8% and 10.1%, respectively. Along the axis of the first main component, genotypes were classified into three groups. The first component was defined by fruit length, diameter and mass. The second component was correlated with pericarp thickness and locules number, and the third with moisture content, ash content and total soluble solids. Based on the cluster analysis, genotypes were classified into three groups which were in agreement with the PCA groups. Hybridization between genotypes from different groups was proposed in order to create new hybrids and varieties and to increase tomato germplasm diversity. By crossing those genotypes, improved recombinations in morphological and chemical traits can be expected.
AB  - Paradajz je jedna od najznačajnih vrsta iz familije Solanaceae. Fokusirajući se na značaj paradajza u ljudskoj ishrani i problem njegove sužene genetske varijabilnosti, cilj istraživanja je bio da se proceni morfološki i hemijski diverzitet u kolekciji germplazme Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu. Dvadeset genotipova je odabrano za analizu sledećih osobina ploda: prosečna masa (g), dužina (cm), širina (cm), debljina perikarpa (mm), broj komora, sadržaj vode (%), ukupna rastvorljiva suva materija (°Brix), sadržaj pepela (%), ukupna kiselost (%) i pH vrednost. Biljni materijal odabran za analizu obuhvatao je: lokalne populacije, stare sorte, oplemenjivačke linije i komercijalne sorte. Utvrđene su razlike između genotipova u svim ispitivanim osobinama. Prosečna masa ploda i broj komora imali su najveći koeficijent varijacije. Ispitivani genotipovi su se najmanje razlikovali u sadržaju vode u plodu. Četiri glavne komponente objasnile su 90,6% ukupne varijabilnosti ili 36,5%, 24,2%, 19,8% i 10,1%, redom. Duž ose prve glavne komponente genotipovi su klasifikovani u tri grupe. Prva komponenta je definisana dužinom, širinom i prosečnom masom ploda. Druga komponenta je bila u korelaciji sa debljinom perikarpa i brojem komora, a treća sa sadržajem vode, pepela i ukupne rastvorljive suve materije. Klaster analizom genotipovi su klasifikovani u tri grupe koje su bile u saglasnosti sa PCA grupama. U cilju stvaranja novih sorti i hibrida, kao i povećanja diverziteta germplazme paradajza, predložena je hibridizacija genotipova iz različitih grupa. Ukrštanjem tih genotipova mogu se očekivati unapređene rekombinacije u morfološkim i hemijskim osobinama.

Evaluation of a diverse collection of red clover for forage quality and antioxidant activity

AB  - Description of the subject. Red clover is an important forage legume and a rich source of high quality forage for livestock feed. This study assesses of a diverse red clover collection for agronomic value, forage quality and antioxidant activity in relation to status (cultivar vs natural population) and ploidy level (diploid or tetraploid) for the purpose of diversity study and for
identification of potential heterotic groups and classification of accessions according to the results of analyses. Objectives. The aims of this research were to: i) explore agronomic traits, forage quality, and antioxidant activity in relation to status and ploidy level; ii) assess trait associations and the possibility of indirect selection; iii) cluster red clover accessions with
regard to forage quality and antioxidant activity. Method. Red clover was represented by 46 accessions, the cultivars and natural populations of diploid (2n) and tetraploid
(4n) ploidy levels from 17 countries, which were collected and preserved in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia. The following traits were determined from the two-year field trial at Rimski Šančevi, Serbia: plant height (PH), internodes number (IN), green mass yield (GMY), dry matter yield (DMY), crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestible dry matter (DDM), dry matter intake (DMI), relative feed value (RFV) and antioxidant activity. All accessions were characterized in the second cut of the second year of life when 20-25% of flowers appeared. Results. The cultivars had higher values for PH, IN, GMY, DMY, DDM, DMI, and RFV. The tetraploid accessions had higher
values for IN, GMY, DMY, CP, NDF and DDM. The natural populations and diploid accessions had 39.9% and 21.9% smaller antioxidant capacity, respectively. The antioxidant capacity was positively associated with RFV, DDM, DMI, PH, IN, GMY and DMY, but negatively with ADF and NDF. Conclusions. The grouping of red clover accessions based on forage quality parameters and antioxidant activity was represented by five clusters. High-quality cultivars had a shorter length of internodes and a good leaf to stem ratio with a high leaf proportion.
AB  - Description du sujet. Le trèfle violet est une légumineuse fourragère importante et une riche source de fourrage de haute qualité pour l’alimentation du bétail. Cette étude évalue une collection diversifiée de trèfle violet pour la valeur agronomique, la qualité du fourrage et l’activité antioxydante en relation avec le statut (cultivar vs population naturelle) et le niveau de ploïdie
(diploïde ou tétraploïde) aux fins d’étude de diversité et d’identification de groupes hétérotiques potentiels et de classification des accessions en fonction des résultats des analyses.
Objectifs. Les buts de cette recherche étaient : i) d’explorer les caractéristiques agronomiques, la qualité du fourrage et l’activité antioxydante en relation avec le statut et le niveau de ploïdie ; ii) d’évaluer les associations de caractéristiques et la possibilité de sélection indirecte ; iii) de regrouper les accessions de trèfle violet en ce qui concerne la qualité du fourrage et l’activité
antioxydante. Méthode. Le trèfle violet était représenté par 46 accessions, les cultivars et populations naturelles de niveaux de ploïdie diploïde (2n) et tétraploïde (4n) originaires de 17 pays qui ont été collectés et conservés à l’Institut des grandes cultures et des cultures maraîchères de Novi Sad, Serbie. Les caractéristiques suivantes ont été définies sur la base d’un essai bisannuel sur un champ dans la localité de Rimski Sancevi en Serbie : hauteur de la plante (PH), nombre d’entre-noeuds (IN), rendement en masse verte (GMY), rendement en matière sèche (DMY), protéine brute (CP ), fibre détergente acide (ADF), fibre détergente neutre (NDF), matière sèche digestible (DDM), apport en matière sèche (DMI), valeur alimentaire relative (RFV) et activité
antioxydante. Toutes les accessions ont été caractérisées à la deuxième coupe de la deuxième année de vie lorsque 20 à 25 % des fleurs sont apparues. Résultats. Les cultivars avaient des valeurs plus élevées pour PH, IN, GMY, DMY, DDM, DMI et RFV. Les accessions 4n
avaient des valeurs plus élevées pour IN, GMY, DMY, CP, NDF et DDM. Les populations et les accessions 2n avaient une capacité antioxydante inférieure de 39,9 % et 21,9 %, respectivement. La capacité antioxydante était positivement associée à RFV, DDM, DMI, PH, IN, GMY et DMY, mais négativement à ADF et NDF. Conclusions. Le regroupement des accessions de trèfle violet sur la base des paramètres de qualité du fourrage et de l’activité antioxydante a été représenté par cinq groupes. Les cultivars de haute qualité avaient une longueur d’entre-noeuds plus courte
et un bon rapport feuille/tige avec une proportion élevée de feuilles.

Les buts de cette recherche étaient : i) d’explorer les caractéristiques agronomiques, la qualité du fourrage et l’activité antioxydante en relation avec le statut et le niveau de ploïdie ; ii) d’évaluer les associations de caractéristiques et la possibilité de sélection indirecte ; iii) de regrouper les accessions de trèfle violet en ce qui concerne la qualité du fourrage et l’activité
antioxydante. Méthode. Le trèfle violet était représenté par 46 accessions, les cultivars et populations naturelles de niveaux de ploïdie diploïde (2n) et tétraploïde (4n) originaires de 17 pays qui ont été collectés et conservés à l’Institut des grandes cultures et des cultures maraîchères de Novi Sad, Serbie. Les caractéristiques suivantes ont été définies sur la base d’un essai bisannuel sur un champ dans la localité de Rimski Sancevi en Serbie : hauteur de la plante (PH), nombre d’entre-noeuds (IN), rendement en masse verte (GMY), rendement en matière sèche (DMY), protéine brute (CP ), fibre détergente acide (ADF), fibre détergente neutre (NDF), matière sèche digestible (DDM), apport en matière sèche (DMI), valeur alimentaire relative (RFV) et activité
antioxydante. Toutes les accessions ont été caractérisées à la deuxième coupe de la deuxième année de vie lorsque 20 à 25 % des fleurs sont apparues. Résultats. Les cultivars avaient des valeurs plus élevées pour PH, IN, GMY, DMY, DDM, DMI et RFV. Les accessions 4n
avaient des valeurs plus élevées pour IN, GMY, DMY, CP, NDF et DDM. Les populations et les accessions 2n avaient une capacité antioxydante inférieure de 39,9 % et 21,9 %, respectivement. La capacité antioxydante était positivement associée à RFV, DDM, DMI, PH, IN, GMY et DMY, mais négativement à ADF et NDF. Conclusions. Le regroupement des accessions de trèfle violet sur la base des paramètres de qualité du fourrage et de l’activité antioxydante a été représenté par cinq groupes. Les cultivars de haute qualité avaient une longueur d’entre-noeuds plus courte
et un bon rapport feuille/tige avec une proportion élevée de feuilles.",

Good agricultural practices and technologies to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters in oilseed rape production in Serbia

AB  - Oilseed rape is primarily known as an industrial plant. Its seed is an important source of oil and proteins for nutritional and non-edible uses. After the extraction of oil from oilseed rape seed, the meal (cake), rich in proteins, fibers, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which is suitable for feeding domestic animals, remains. Areas under oilseed rape in Serbia have increased in the last decade. Over this period, the average yield of oilseed rape seed in Serbia was about 2.7 t/ha but varied depending on agro-ecological conditions. Climatic conditions in Serbia are suitable for oilseed rape production, but the occurrence of natural disasters (drought, floods, stormy winds and hail) leads to a decline in yield and seed quality. For farmers, it is extremely important to choose the right variety of oilseed rape to mitigate the effects of natural disasters because each variety has specific advantages that can make it suitable for certain growing conditions. Farmers in Serbia can choose many high-yielding varieties created in our agro-ecological conditions. Likewise, a system of measures that includes the best crop rotation plan (oilseed rape fits well with winter cereals as a forecrop), basic tillage (to a depth of 20–30 cm), sowing (of certified seed, in the period from 25 August to 20 September), plant nutrition (total amount of nitrogen fertilisers divided into several doses), control of weeds, pests and diseases (by combining preventive measures, especially agro-technical practices such as crop rotation, tillage, and crop density), setting up of irrigation and drainage systems, as well as the timely harvest (when the seed contains less than 15 percent moisture) provides favourable conditions for the proper development of oilseed rape crops. This is the basis for mitigating the impacts of natural disasters and achieving high and stable yields. Neglecting these basic requirements of oilseed rape technology or reducing certain measures inevitably leads to yield losses. Also, farmers are recommended to consider the possibility of introducing agricultural technologies such as conservation tillage and intercropping that are successfully applied in the world but still are not present in larger areas in Serbia. Finally, one of the measures to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters, based on a risk-sharing strategy, is crop insurance. With the continuous education of producers and further improvement of the assortment, technology and machinery, it is realistic to expect an increase in the area under oilseed rape in Serbia and greater production safety under the conditions of climate change. AB  - Uljana repica je prvenstveno poznata kao industrijska biljka i zbog visokog sadržaja i kvalitetnog ulja, najviše se koristi za proizvodnju zrelog semena. Nakon izdvajanja ulja, ostaje sačma bogata proteinima i pogodna u ishrani domaćih životinja. Površina pod uljanom repicom u Srbiji imaju trend povećanja u poslednjoj deceniji. Prosečan prinos uljane repice u ovom periodu u Srbiji je oko 2,7 t/ha, ali varira u zavisnosti od agroekoloških uslova. Klimatski uslovi u Srbiji pogoduju proizvodnji uljane repice, ali pojava prirodnih nepogoda (suša, poplava, olujni vetrovi i grad) dovode do pada prinosa i kvaliteta semena i ulja. Izuzetno je važan pravilan izbor sorte uljane repice u cilju ublažavanja dejstva prirodnih nepogoda jer svaka sorta ima specifične prednosti koje je mogu učiniti pogodnom za određene uslove gajenja. Poljoprivrednici u Srbiji imaju mogućnost da odaberu brojne visokoprinosne sorte stvorene u našim agroekološkim uslovima. Takođe, sistem mera koji uključuje pravilnu smenu useva u plodoredu (najčešće sa strnim žitima kao predusevom), osnovnu obradu (dubina 20–30 cm), setvu (sertifikovano seme, vreme setve od 25. avgusta do 20. septembra), ishranu biljaka (podela đubrenja azotom u više faza), suzbijanje korova, štetočina i bolesti (merama integralne zaštite biljaka, posebno oslanjanjem na preventivne mere i sa što manjim rizikom po ljude i životnu sredinu), postavljanje sistema za navodnjavanje i odvodnjavanje, kao i pravovremenu žetvu (kada seme sadrži manje od 15 posto vlage), obezbeđuje povoljne uslove za pravilan razvoj useva uljane repice, a što je osnov za ublažavanje dejstva prirodnih nepogoda i postizanje visokih i stabilnih prinosa. Zapostavljanje ovih osnovnih zahteva tehnologije gajenja uljane repice ili redukovanje određenih mera neizbežno dovodi do gubitaka prinosa. Konačno, preporučuje se poljoprivrednicima da razmotre mogućnost uvođenja poljoprivrednih tehnologija za ublažavanje dejstva prirodnih nepogoda koje se uspešno primenjuju u svetu, a kod nas još nisu zastupljene na većim površinama, kao što su konzervacijska obrada zemljišta i združena setva, kao i osuguranje useva. Edukacijom proizvođača i daljim poboljšanjem sortimenta, tehnologije i mehanizacije, realno je očekivati povećanje površina pod uljanom repicom u Srbiji i sigurnost proizvodnje i u uslovima klimatskih promena. Za podršku u primeni poljoprivrednih tehnologija koje smanjuju uticaj prirodnih nepogoda i klimatskih promena, proizvođači uljane repice se mogu obratiti Poljoprivrednim savetodavnim stručnim službama.

AB  - In recent decades the importance of tomato considered as “functional food” is reflected in the rising trend of harvested areas and consumption per capita. During three consecutive years (2010-2012) at experimental fields in Rimski Šančevi near Novi Sad, five landraces, four old varieties, eight breeding lines and three commercial cultivars were chosen for the investigation. Following fruit characteristics were analyzed: average weight (g), length (cm), width (cm), pericarp thickness (mm), locule number, moisture content (%), total soluble solids (°Brix), ash content (%), total acidity (%) and pH value. For the most fruit characteristics high variability was determined. Four principal components explained 90,6% of total variance or 36.5%, 24.2%, 19.8% and 10.1, respectively. Along the axis of the first main component, genotypes were classified into three groups. The objective of this study was to classify 20 tomato genotypes based on physical and chemical traits and to segregate perspective genotypes for improvement of tomato quality by breeding programs.

Oplemenjivanje krmnog sirka u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo

AB  - Sirak je jednogodišnja, toploljubiva biljna vrsta iz familije trava Poaceae. Ističe se visokim stepenom tolerantnosti prema uslovima suše i visokih temperatura, a moguće je gajiti ga i na marginalnim zemljištima lošijeg mehaničkog sastava. Prema podacima FAOSTAT (2019), tokom 2017. godine sirak je u Srbiji gajen na površini od 2.580 ha. U okviru ove biljne vrste postoje četiri agronomske forme: sirak za proizvodnju zrna, sirak metlaš, krmni sirak i sudanska trava. Na Odeljenju za krmno bilje Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu intenzivno se radi na oplemenjivanju krmnog sirka i sudanske trave radi stvaranja novih, poboljšanih sorti i hibrida. U periodu od 1973. godine do danas, u Srbiji su stvorene i priznate četiri sorte (Novosadski silosirak, Novosadski šećerac, NS Džin, Titan) i tri hibrida krmnog sirka (NS Čiker, Siloking, NS Šećerac), kao i tri sorte sudanske trave (Srem, Zora, Sava).

abstract = "Sirak je jednogodišnja, toploljubiva biljna vrsta iz familije trava Poaceae. Ističe se visokim stepenom tolerantnosti prema uslovima suše i visokih temperatura, a moguće je gajiti ga i na marginalnim zemljištima lošijeg mehaničkog sastava. Prema podacima FAOSTAT (2019), tokom 2017. godine sirak je u Srbiji gajen na površini od 2.580 ha. U okviru ove biljne vrste postoje četiri agronomske forme: sirak za proizvodnju zrna, sirak metlaš, krmni sirak i sudanska trava. Na Odeljenju za krmno bilje Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu intenzivno se radi na oplemenjivanju krmnog sirka i sudanske trave radi stvaranja novih, poboljšanih sorti i hibrida. U periodu od 1973. godine do danas, u Srbiji su stvorene i priznate četiri sorte (Novosadski silosirak, Novosadski šećerac, NS Džin, Titan) i tri hibrida krmnog sirka (NS Čiker, Siloking, NS Šećerac), kao i tri sorte sudanske trave (Srem, Zora, Sava).",

AB  - For designing efficient breeding procedure adequate information on the genetic structure of the parents and mode of gene action affecting the yield and its related traits are prerequisite for progress in breeding. The objective of this research was to evaluate heritability, components of genetic variance as well as ratio of dominant and recessive genes in parental genotypes of sunflower. The plant material selected for this research consisted of sunflower genotypes distinguished by important characteristics for the production of sunflower. Quantitative traits evaluated in this study were seed yield/plant, oil content, 1000 seed weight, head diameter and plant height. Presented results showed significant variability of evaluated quantitative traits. Phenotypic variance was higher than genotypic demonstrating strong environment effect in expression of evaluated traits. The values of broad sense heritability for evaluated traits were very high for plant height, high for 1000 seed weight, moderate for seed yield/plant and head diameter, while low for oil content.

AB  - Krmni sirak i sudanska trava predstavljaju značajnu ugljenohidratnu komponentu u ishrani preživara. Za postizanje visokih prinosa zelene krme važno je primeniti kvalitetnu agrotehniku, pre svega izvršiti setvu na odgovarajući međuredni razmak. Cilj rada je da se odredi uticaj međurednog razmaka na morfološke osobine i prinos sorti krmnog sirka i sudanske trave. Ispitivane morfološke osobine nisu se značajno razlikovale pod uticajem međurednog razmaka, dok je na prinos zelene krme i suve materije razmak veoma značajno uticao. Na međurednom razmaku od 12,5 cm sorte su ostvarile prosečno najveći prinos zelene krme (70,1 t ha-1) i prinos suve materije (21,0 t ha-1 ). Za proizvodnju ovih useva preporučuje se uskoredna setva.
AB  - Forage sorghum and Sudan grass represent a significant carbohydrate component in
ruminant nutrition. In order to achieve high yield of green forage, it is important to
apply quality agro-technology, mainly to seed at the appropriate row spacing. The aim
of the paper is to determine the effect of row spacing on the morphological traits and
yield of forage sorghum and Sudan grass varieties. Tested morphological traits did not
differ significantly due to the effect of the row spacing, while green forage and dry
matter yield were significantly different. At row spacing of 12.5 cm, the average green
forage and dry matter yields were the highest (70.1 t ha-1 and 21.0 t ha-1). Seeding at the narrow rows is recommended for the production of these crops.

AB  - Crvena detelina (Trifolium pratense L.), izrazito stranooplodna biljna vrsta, koja se odlikuje gametofitskim sistemom inkompatibilnosti, a populacije su heterogene i sastoje se od heterozigotnih genotipova. Da bi biljni genetiĉki resursi mogli biti korišćeni u programima oplemenjivanja, neophodno je izvršiti prethodnu karakterizaciju i evaluaciju uzoraka, koji se nalaze u kolekcijama germplazme. Precizan i sveobuhvatan opis germplazme crvene deteline je jedan od osnovnih preduslova u ostvarivanju uspešnog oplemenjivanja. Cilj ovog istraţivanja je bio da se posredstvom analize homogenosti (HOMALS) oceni fenotipska varijabilnosti 46 genotipova crvene deteline koji su deo kolekcije Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu. Analiza homogenosti ("Homogeneity analysis-HOMALS"), poznata i kao višestruka korespodentna analiza ("Multiple correspondence analysis-MCA"), omogućava prouĉavanje povezanosti većeg broja kvalitativnih varijabli, tj. kategoriĉkih, nominalnih podataka.
AB  - Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is a cross-pollinated species characterized by gametophytic incompatibility system; its populations are heterogeneous and consist of heterozygous genotypes. Use of plant genetic resources in breeding programs implies pre-characterization and evaluation of germplasm collection samples. A precise and comprehensive description of red clover germplasm is one of the basic prerequisites for achieving successful breeding. The aim of the study was to evaluate phenotypic variability of 46 red clover genotypes using Homogeneity Analysis (HOMALS), which belong to Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad collection. Homogeneity analysis, also known as Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), allows studying the connection of a number of qualitative variables, i.e. categorical, nominal data.

AB  - Sugar beet is the most important plant for sugar production in Europe and other temperate
climate regions of the world. Broad genetic diversity is crucial for successful breeding program. The main objective of this study was to evaluate 10 sugar beet hybrids based on their morphological and root quality traits and to determine which genotypes are preferable source for new gene collection and selection program. The trial was performed during the growing season of 2016 on the fields of the Institute of field and vegetable crops, at location Rimski Šančevi. Among the explored genotypes, two were from domestic breeding centers while eight belonged to foreign seed institutions. Standardized mean values of all characteristics were used for analysis. The evaluation included Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for the following traits: root weight (g), root length (cm), root diameter (cm), root volume (cm3), root/head ratio (%) specific root weight (g/cm3) and sugar content (%). According to results significant level of diversity was found for all examined traits. Four principal components with their values of 50,2%; 24,4%; 11,9% and 10,4% determined total variance by the amount of 97,96%. Investigated genotypes could be divided into four distinct groups.

abstract = "Sugar beet is the most important plant for sugar production in Europe and other temperate
climate regions of the world. Broad genetic diversity is crucial for successful breeding program. The main objective of this study was to evaluate 10 sugar beet hybrids based on their morphological and root quality traits and to determine which genotypes are preferable source for new gene collection and selection program. The trial was performed during the growing season of 2016 on the fields of the Institute of field and vegetable crops, at location Rimski Šančevi. Among the explored genotypes, two were from domestic breeding centers while eight belonged to foreign seed institutions. Standardized mean values of all characteristics were used for analysis. The evaluation included Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for the following traits: root weight (g), root length (cm), root diameter (cm), root volume (cm3), root/head ratio (%) specific root weight (g/cm3) and sugar content (%). According to results significant level of diversity was found for all examined traits. Four principal components with their values of 50,2%; 24,4%; 11,9% and 10,4% determined total variance by the amount of 97,96%. Investigated genotypes could be divided into four distinct groups.",

AB  - The purpose of the study was to investigate variability source structure and contribution of particular traits in total variability of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) germplasm collection. Plant material, belonging to the collection of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad included: 5 landraces, 10 old varieties, 10 breeding lines and 4 commercial varieties. The trial was set at the experimental fields of the Rimski Sančevi site, during 2010-2012. Observations were recorded on the first truss and following traits were analyzed: fruit length (FL) and width (FW), locules number (LN), pericarp thickness (P7), dry matter content (DM), average fruit weight (FWe), fruit yield per plot (FY/plot), number of fruits per plot (NF/plot), average fruit number per plant (FN/plant), number of days from germination to the beginning of maturity (ND). Principal Component Analysis was performed in statistical software STATISTICA 12.

AB  - Association analysis, a recent approach in studying genetic architecture of quantitative traits, provides higher resolution mapping, time efficient and direct application on breeding material in comparison to biparental QTL mapping. Assuming that markers near stable QTLs across different environments and genetic backgrounds can be useful for marker-assisted selection, we selected SSR markers previously associated with the QTLs for the traits of interest in various mapping studies. To confirm the marker trait associations and evaluate the stability of the QTLs, a set of diverse maize inbred lines developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad was chosen. It was genotyped with microsatellite markers near already known QTLs and phenotyped for flowering time, yield and yield components. Association analysis indicated significant correlations between several agronomic traits and three microsatellites on chromosomes 3, 5 and 8, namely umc1025, bnlg1237 and bnlg162.
