AB  - Klima je ponovo pokazala da je najznačajniji faktor u proizvodnji kukuruza. Dug beskišni period i izuzetno visoke temperature vazduha, pogotovo u generativnoj fazi, glavni su krivci niskih prinosa u 2022. godini. Ako se tome doda intenzivan napad insekata i kišovito, hladno vreme krajem vegetacije, nije neočekivano što smo zabeležili prinos znatno niži od višegodišnjeg proseka. Mere adaptacije, kao što su tehnologija proizvodnje i sortiment su snažne poluge u ublažavanju ekstremnih vremenskih prilika. Ipak, zbog izostanka adekvatne tehnologije kao i grešaka pri izboru sortimenta, pad prinosa je bio očekivan. U godinama pred nama, moramo menjati tehnološka rešenja i izbor hibrida bazirati na pouzdanim i potvrđenim podacima.

AB  - Mycotoxins in maize represent a great threat to human health. For this reason, novel technics such as ozone treatment are used to reduce the content of maize mycotoxins. However, there is little knowledge about the effect of ozone treatment on maize quality parameters. This study investigated the changes in Fusarium and Aspergillus mycotoxins and the changes in fatty acids during the ozone treatment of maize samples. Sixteen maize hybrids were visually tested for the naturally occurring ear rot severity and treated with three different concentrations of ozone (40, 70, and 85 mg/L). Mycotoxin content in maize samples was determined using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system, whereas dominant fatty acids were determined using gas chromatography coupled with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Ozone treatments could be successfully applied to reduce the content of mycotoxins in maize below the detection limit. Ozone treatments increased the content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and decreased the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), i.e., linoleic acid (36.7% in relation to the lowest applied ozone concentration), which negatively affected the nutritional value of maize.

AB  - Dark red corn is rich in anthocyanins, which belong to phenolic compounds, one of the largest families of antioxidants. Due to numerous, beneficial biological activities of these compounds, this crop is rising in popularity. Unfortunately, the use of dark red corn in the temperate zone is limited, so the breeding activities in this sense are negligible. To maximize profitability and meet technological and growing demands, both biochemical and agronomic performances of such materials have to be considered. A preliminary study was conducted to test the variability of total phenolic compounds and some agronomic traits in NS01RB, a broad based population of dark red corn. 352 full sibs were tested in an incomplete block design with replicates in sets. Data were collected for grain yield, grain moisture, ASI, stay green, stalk lodging, ear rotting and grain color. Significant genetic variability existed among full sibs for all studied traits. A subset of 132 full sibs that showed the highest level of tolerance to ear rotting was selected for biochemical analysis. Mean values for the total phenolic compound ranged from 0.66 to 4.83 mg/g. Basic genetic parameters, relationships and mean values of the examined traits showed that the studied material represents a valuable source of phenolic compounds and could be used in a breeding program.

AB  - Cycloxydim Tolerant Maize (CTM) was developed at the University of Minnesota, USA. CTM plants contain a nuclear, partially dominant single gene mutation (known as Acc1) that confer tolerance to cycloxydim. Cycloxydim is a systemic, post emergence herbicide for grass weeds control in dicot crops. Conventional maize is susceptible to cycloxydim, so the gene of tolerance must be introduced in both inbred parents to provide complete tolerance of CTM hybrids. Although this increase the number of required conversions, many seed companies have commercialized CTM hybrids. Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad was the first to commercialize CTM hybrid in Serbia. Application of cycloxydim based product in CTM hybrids can provide efficient and reliable control of annual and perennial grass weeds without risk of phytotoxicity to the crop. Also, the technology is suitable for use in intercropping (an example: CTM + beans).

AB  - It is considered that one of the greatest food safety concerns worldwide is aflatoxins (AFs) contamination of cereals, due to its carcinogenic effects, high number of associated notifications in cereal based food and feed products, as well as in milk and dairy products. AFs produced mainly by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, are the most toxic and frequent contaminants of cereals, especially in areas with hot and humid climates. Changes in temperature and water availability related to global climate changes (increased temperature, heavy rainfalls, and droughts) are modulating factors of filamentous fungi growth and production of mycotoxins. Amongst all favouring factors, environmental factors (temperature, water activity (aw) and relative humidity (RH)) and climate change have been identified as the primary factors.

AB  - Maize is an agricultural crop that is susceptible to infections by various phytopathogenic fungi, producers of mycotoxins harmful to humans and animals. Since this agricultural crop has an important place in the human diet, its health safety is very important. Trichoderma genus has great potential in the biocontrol of various phytopathogens however, the medium composition as well as the cultivation conditions, have a significant impact on the efficiency of the produced Trichoderma bioagents. In this work, influence of medium pH, temperature and mixing speed on the productivity of Trichoderma bioagent effective against two maize pathogens, Fusarium graminearum and Aspergillus flavus, was investigated. The results obtained by statistical processing show that the best productivity of Trichoderma harzianum bioagent was achieved when the pH of the medium was 6, the temperature was 28°C and the mixing speed of the rotary shaker was 180 rpm. By applying these cultivation conditions, the largest inhibition zone diameters of F. graminearum and A. flavus mycelial growth were formed. Also, the results show that the maize pathogen, F. graminearum, was more sensitive to the produced Trichoderma biocontrol agent compared to the other maize pathogen, A. flavus.

Effect of different carbon and nitrogen sources combination in medium for production of biocontrol agent Trichoderma harzianum

AB  - The increasing usage of chemicals for plant protection in recent years has become a serious problem. One of the possible solutions is use of beneficial microorganisms instead of synthetic fungicides, which will contribute to the protection of the environment and human health. Since the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium graminearum are the most important pathogens that cause maize diseases and produce mycotoxins, the potential of Trichoderma harzianum for biocontrol of both phytopathogens was examined in this paper. The aim of this paper was to study the influence of different carbon and nitrogen combinations in the medium for T. harzianum production. T. harzianum was cultivated in Erlenmeyer flasks and the effect of cultivation broth against selected maize pathogens was tested using well diffusion method. The results of this study showed that the combination of different carbon and nitrogen sources in the T. harzianum cultivation medium statistically significantly affects the production of Trichoderma cultivation broth effective on two tested phytopathogens. Dextrose as a carbon source and soybean flour as a nitrogen source proved to be the best combination in the medium for production of T. harzianum cultivation broth effective on A. flavus and F. graminearum. Maximal inhibition zone diameters of 31 mm and 56.33 mm were registered in those medium formulations for A. flavus and F. graminearum, respectively. These researches represent an important step for further research in which a medium of low market value would be selected. This would reduce the price of the production process but also the final product.
AB  - Sve veća upotreba hemijskih sredstava za zaštitu bilja poslednjih godina postala je ozbiljan problem. Upotreba korisnih mikroorganizama umesto sintetičkih fungicida u biološkoj zaštiti sigurno je jedno od rešenja koje doprinose zaštiti životne sredine i ljudskog zdravlja. S obzirom na to da se gljive Aspergillus flavus i Fusarium graminearum pominju kao najvažniji prouzrokovači bolesti kukuruza, proizvođači mikotoksina, u ovom radu ispitan je antifungalni efekat Trichoderma harzianum na obe fitopatogene gljive. Cilj ovog rada je ispitati uticaj različitih kombinacija ugljenika i azota u podlozi za proizvodnju T. harzianum. Kultivacija T. harzianum izvedena je u erlenmajerima na rotacionoj tresilici, a aktivnost dobijene kultivacione tečnosti na odabrane fitopatogene kukuruza ispitana je difuzionom metodom sa bunarima. Rezultati ovog rada pokazali su da kombinacija različitih izvora ugljenika i azota u podlozi statistički značajno utiče na proizvodnju Trichoderma kultivacione tečnosti efikasne na dve testirane fitopatogene gljive. Kombinacija koja sadrži dekstrozu kao izvor ugljenika i sojino brašno kao izvor azota pokazala se najboljom za formulaciju podloge za proizvodnju T. harzianum kultivacione tečnosti efikasne na patogene kukuruza, A. flavus i F. graminearum, formirajući maksimalne prečnike zona inhibicije od 31 mm, odnosno 56,33 mm.

Biocontrol potential of different trichoderma isolates against maize phytopathogens

AB  - Usage of chemical plant protection agents in agricultural production contributes to environmental pollution and emissions of factors harmful for human health. It has been noted that their overexploitation has resulted in the emergence of resistant species and chemical compounds in the food chain, which indicates the need to find new agents with improved characteristics. One of the solutions is certainly the use of beneficial microorganisms. Considering that maize is a significant agricultural crop very present in the human diet, its health safety is of great importance. In this paper, the ability of three Trichoderma isolates, isolated from the environment, in the biological control of the most common maize pathogens, was examined. Cultivation of Tricoderma isolates was performed on PDB (Potato Dextrose Broth) medium by shaking at 150 rpm for 7 days at 25°C. After 7 days of cultivation, the effect of both, cultivation broth and supernatant, against selected maize phytopathogens was examined using wells diffusion technique. The results showed that the cultivation broth showed a statistically significant efficacy on selected maize phytopathogens compared to the supernatant, using all Trichoderma isolates. By applying the Scheffe test, it was determined that the best effect on the test maize phytopathogens show cultivation broth of T. harzianum, forming maximum mean inhibition zone diameters of 50.33 mm for Fusarium graminearum, 40.67 mm for Helminthosporium carbonum, 25.67 mm for Aspergillus flavus and 25.33 mm for Penicillium sp. Since each inhibition zone larger than 22 mm shows that the produced agent is highly efficient, based on the obtained inhibition zone diameters of all tested isolates, it can be concluded that the produced T. harzianum cultivation broth shows high efficacy against four maize phytopathogens in vitro. This results once again confirms the great potential of Trichoderma isolates in biological control, which certainly contributes to the development of sustainable agricultural production and consequently has a positive impact on human health.

After 7 days of cultivation, the effect of both, cultivation broth and supernatant, against selected maize phytopathogens was examined using wells diffusion technique. The results showed that the cultivation broth showed a statistically significant efficacy on selected maize phytopathogens compared to the supernatant, using all Trichoderma isolates. By applying the Scheffe test, it was determined that the best effect on the test maize phytopathogens show cultivation broth of T. harzianum, forming maximum mean inhibition zone diameters of 50.33 mm for Fusarium graminearum, 40.67 mm for Helminthosporium carbonum, 25.67 mm for Aspergillus flavus and 25.33 mm for Penicillium sp. Since each inhibition zone larger than 22 mm shows that the produced agent is highly efficient, based on the obtained inhibition zone diameters of all tested isolates, it can be concluded that the produced T. harzianum cultivation broth shows high efficacy against four maize phytopathogens in vitro. This results once again confirms the great potential of Trichoderma isolates in biological control, which certainly contributes to the development of sustainable agricultural production and consequently has a positive impact on human health.",
