AB - Sunflower breeding is a continuous process designed to increase yield levels and improve resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding methods that vary by species. The emergence of new techniques, such as genomic selection and genome editing, together with efficient phenotyping platforms, have paved the way for more efficient introduction of desirable traits. New approaches in genotyping and phenotyping have enabled more efficient data collection to identify quantitative traits and explain the genetic basis of agronomically important traits. The creation of sunflower genotypes resistant to climate change can contribute to mitigating the negative impact that agricultural production has on the environment, such as intensive water depletion and greenhouse gas emissions, while on the other hand providing resources for stable agricultural production. The paper provides an overview of new approaches and steps in sunflower breeding and the creation of genotypes tolerant to climate changes, with a review of the activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops related to their application in the NS breeding program.

AB - With aim to improve characterization and eventually, utilisation of garlic collection from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Serbia, the genetic diversity of 52 accessions was estimated
based on microsatellite markers, agronomic, biochemical and phenotypic traits (UPOV descriptor).
The Shannon index H′ with a value of 0.47–0.95 indicated a high level of diversity for the greatest
number of examined traits according to the UPOV descriptor. Based on agronomic and biochemical traits, groups of genotypes with the highest potential for yield and bioactive properties improvement were singled out. Molecular evaluation indicated the presence of duplicates in the collection and necessity of further research with additional number of DNA markers. The obtained results are important from the aspects of breeding and development of new varieties with improved yield and functional value as well as more economical conservation of genetic resources. Since diversity of plant genetic resources constantly decreases, the obtained results have long-term significance because preserved and genetically variable collections represent a valuable source of desirable genes for future human needs.

AB - Two genotypes of pigmented maize (black (BM) and red (RM)) were used as flour ingredients in several formulations of the traditional baked maize dish “proja”. This study investigated the stability of phytochemical compounds and antioxidant activity in proja as affected by baking and different acidity degrees of dough formulations. Compared to RM proja, all BM proja formulations were significantly higher in antioxidant compounds and exhibited the highest inhibitory activity (73–85%) against DPPH. There was a strong significant correlation between DPPH inhibition and total phenolics (r2 = 0.95), flavonoids (r2 = 0.96), and anthocyanins (r2 = 0.97) in baked proja. After baking, 67–85% of total phenolics were retained. The fate of flavonoids and anthocyanins after baking was variable: from 70% degradation to liberation. Dough acidity significantly and positively affected the content of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins in BM proja (r2 = 0.70, 0.82, and 0.47, respectively). Baking increased antioxidant activity against DPPH, •OH, and O2•− radicals in proja, except for ≈10% decline of DPPH inhibition in BM proja. In RM proja, retention of inhibitory capacity against O2•− was highly correlated to flavonoid retention (r2 = 0.71). Using pigmented maize flour in proja baking resulted in proja with appreciable content of total phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and high antioxidant activity, confirming the significant improvement of the nutrient profile of this traditional food.

AB - Macrophomina phaseolina, the causative agent of charcoal rot, affects a wide array of plant hosts, including sunflower. This disease thrives in warm, arid conditions, leading to symptoms such as the wilting, drying, and premature ripening of sunflower plants. This study aims to explore the biochemical responses of 15 inbred lines, each exhibiting varying levels of resistance, to uncover potential correlations between resistance levels and biochemical reactions in sunflower inbred lines. The investigation focused on: total protein content (TPC), lipid peroxidation intensity as a marker of membrane integrity (LP), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide-dismutase activity (SOD), and total phenolic content as antioxidant compounds (TP). These parameters were assessed 10 days following the laboratory inoculation of inbred lines with the pathogen and compared with disease severity. Correlations between resistance levels and the results of these five assays were analyzed in conjunction with disease severity observed in the inbred lines. Remarkably, after the 10-day assessment period, only the total phenolic content showed a significant positive correlation with the resistance of inbred lines (r=0.712; p<0.05). This finding identified inbred lines PB 21 and L 1 as the most resilient among the tested varieties. It was observed that different inbred lines exhibit distinct responses to M. phaseolina. However, in the majority of cases, an increase in total phenolic content was noted in sunflower plants following inoculation. This suggests a potential defensive mechanism triggered by the pathogen. Further studies can analyze more precisely into the molecular intricacies of sunflower resistance to charcoal rot and validate these findings across broader genetic backgrounds.

AB - This paper provides an overview of castor (Ricinus communis L.) plant characteristics, cultivation, seed harvest, reception, and pretreatment, and oil extraction, refinement, storage, and physicochemical properties, composition, and uses. It focuses on various traditional and novel methods of castor oil extraction and their optimization, kinetics, thermodynamics, and techno-economic, environmental, and social issues. Generally, novel techniques proved higher oil yield in a shorter time than conventional ones. The hybrid ultrasound-microwave-assisted extraction provided the highest oil yield, whereas supercritical CO2 extraction showed no effect. The composition and properties of castor oil depend on not only extraction methods but also geographical origin, climate, soil, cultivar, and harvest time. The future perspective involves utilizing the entire biomass in a biorefinery to maximize the value of oil, seed cake, and waste residues. Castor oil production offers opportunities for sustainable development, but challenges must be addressed to ensure sustainability and social responsibility throughout the production process.

AB - This study aimed to examine and compare the main nutritional quality parameters and bioactive compounds of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) grain in order to select genotypes suitable for human consumption and predict genotypes with higher antioxidant capacity. Sorghum grains from the restorer lines collection (172 genotypes) were analysed for their nutritional quality (ash, protein, fat and starch), phenolic compounds content (total phenolics, tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins), as well as for antioxidant activity and colour parameters. The content of the studied items was 1.6–6.6 % for total lipids, 8.7–19.8 % for proteins, 1.2–3.7 % for ash and 57.1–93.3 % for starch. Total phenolics con tent was 0.6–11.3 g·kg-1 (expressed as GAE) in methanolic extracts and 1.1–17.1 g·kg-1 (expressed as GAE) in acetone extracts, while the highest antioxidant activity was 90.4 %. There was no correlation between colour and tannin content. The expected and experimentally obtained antioxidant activity confirmed the effectiveness of artificial neural network as a predictive tool. This study showed that sorghum is a valuable material for developing functional food products and it has potential if cultivated in the European climate.

AB - Having in mind food security and the fact that basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is used as fresh seasoning, the development of innovative technologies for its cultivation is required. This study aimed to isolate and characterize plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolates from basil rhizospheric soil and monitor the effects of their application on basil growth under different water stress conditions. Isolation, determination of isolates biochemical and PGP properties, evaluation of isolates influences on seed germination and parameters of growth of basil plant, growing under well-watered conditions (70% water holding capacity, WHC), under water deficit stress (35% WHC), and flooded conditions (95% WHC), were done. A total of five representative bacterial isolates were selected: Two Azotobacter isolates (A13, A14), one Pseudomonas isolate (P57), and two Bacillus isolates (B79, B82). The results of this experiment revealed that rhizospheric bacteria of O. basilicum L. var. minimum have multiple biochemical and PGP properties. The most intensive reactions on tested abiotic stressors - drought (higher total phenolics, reduced glutathione, and malondialdehyde content) and flooding (higher superoxide dismutase activity) - were from basil plants inoculated with Pseudomonas sp. P57 isolate, yet along with Azotobacter sp. isolate A13. The highest number of germinated seeds was obtained with the A13 isolate (96.0%), while the highest response for vigour index was observed with Azotobacter isolates (7200.0% and 5628.0%). In well-watered conditions, basil mass inoculated with P57 was 34.2% higher than control. In drought-stressed conditions, plant mass inoculated with A13isolate was 90% higher than control. In flooded-stressed conditions, the plant mass inoculated with Azotobacter and Pseudomonas isolates increased by more than 100%.

AB - Dredged sediment contaminated with heavy metals can be remediated through phytoremediation. The main challenge in phytoremediation is the limited availability of heavy metals for plant uptake, particularly in multi-contaminated soil or sediment. This study aimed to assess the effect of the nitrogen fertilizers ammonium nitrate (AN), ammonium sulfate (AS), and urea (UR)), organic acids (oxalic (OA) and malic (MA) acids), and their combined addition to sediment on enhancing the bioavailability and phytoremediation efficiency of heavy metals. The sediment dredged from Begej Canal (Serbia) had high levels of Cr, Cd, Cu, and Pb and was used in pot experiments to cultivate energy crop rapeseed Brassica napus), which is known for its tolerance to heavy metals. The highest accumulation and translocation of Cu, Cd, and Pb were observed in the treatment with AN at a dose of 150 mg N/kg (AN150), in which shoot biomass was also the highest. The application of OA and MA increased heavy metal uptake but resulted in the lowest biomass production. A combination of MA with N fertilizers showed high uptake and accumulation of Cr and Cu.

AB - Plant species might face detrimental consequences from acidity stress during
germination and early plant growth. Successful crop production depends on seed
germination, and a plant's ability to withstand different pH levels is determined by its
tolerance mechanisms. Unfavorable substrate pH during seed germination can cause
adverse effects like changes in membrane permeability, reduced degradation rate of
stored substances, lower enzyme activity, altered membrane potential energy, inhibited
proteolytic activity and altered seed storage metabolism. Numerous studies have
worked on the effect of acidity stress on seed germination of different crops. However,
currently, there is no research available regarding how industrial hemp responds to
acidity. This study aimed to determine how different levels of acidity affect the
germination and initial plant growth of industrial hemp. Four different pH values (4.0,
5.0, 6.0, and 7.0) were used to test the impact of acidity on the seeds of two different lots
of industrial hemp cultivar Helena, developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable
Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia. The hydrogen ion concentration range was regulated by
adding H2SO4 or NaOH. The germination test was performed to assess the hemp seed
germination and plant growth. The results demonstrated that the pH level determines
how acidity affects hemp seed germination and initial plant growth. Compared to other
acid treatments, the germination capacity of hemp seed at pH 4 was not adversely
affected, although shoot length and fresh and dry seedling biomass were marginally
decreased. Additionally, our findings showed that hemp seedlings could withstand
changes in acid concentration within the applied range and exhibited a modest degree
of lipid peroxidation. The hemp seedlings of both seed lots were not stressed, according
to the findings of biochemical analyses such as total phenolics and antioxidant capacity.
To confirm the research's conclusions, a field experiment should be conducted.

AB - Bradyrhizobium japonicum bacteria on the intensity of nodulation during nine phenophases (R1-R7) in relation to the isoflavone content in soybean seeds. Nine domestic soybean varieties were sown in three replicates, with Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculated and non-inoculated seeds. The different morphological characteristics of nodules, the number and mass of nodules were studied during plants’ ontogenesis. The content of individual isoflavones in the sowing seed material was determined using high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The most abundant isoflavone was acetylgenistin in the variety Galeb (2741.4 μg/g), and the highest content of all isoflavones was recorded in the variety Gorštak (8117.7 μg/g). The variety Sava of the inoculated treatment exhibited the highest average values of the nodule mass (21.1 mg) and the highest number of nodules (23.3) in the phenophase, in which 10% of pods reached full length (R4). The average values of mass and number of nodules were calculated for the entire vegetation period, being higher in the inoculated treatment. There was no positive correlation between the content of isoflavones in seeds and the number and mass of nodules. The impact of quantity of isoflavone on nodulation intensity in soybeans was not significant,, which could be related to already saturated soil with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

AB - Crop breeding is a continuous process aimed at increasing yields and improving crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recently, frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions have led to the fact that classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions and a timely response to new challenges in agricultural production. With all this in mind, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established the Centre of Excellence for Innovations in the Breeding of Climate-tolerant Plants - Climate Crops with the aim of introducing and applying new breeding techniques (NBT), along with efficient phenotyping platforms in crop breeding programs in IFVCNS. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.

AB - The biological activity (contact and contact-digestive toxicity, repellent and fumigant effects, effect on the insect’s development and life cycle parameters) of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) ethanolic extract was assessed against Plodia interpunctella, the most destructive storage pest of sunflower. Additionally, the study aimed to examine the phytotoxic activity of the extract in order to assess its potential as a sunflower grain protectant. Phytotoxicity assessment was based on the effect on germination energy and seed germination and the activity of antioxidative enzymes, enzymes of the polyphenolic metabolism, and the intensity of lipid peroxidation in sunflower seedlings. The antioxidant capacity and content of phenolic compounds (total phenolics and total tannins) were also measured in seedlings. In the experiments, 70% ethanolic extract of dried flowering buds of industrial hemp (variety Helena) was applied at 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% concentrations directly on sunflower seeds. Ethanol solution (70%) was the control. The hemp extract (1% and 2%) revealed medium repellence for P. interpunctella larvae (L3–4) while at 2% concentration it caused 42.5% larval mortality after 72 h. Moreover, the insect’s development was prolonged and fecundity significantly reduced in hemp treatments. The extract did not exhibit fumigant activity. Germination energy and germination of sunflower seeds were stimulated in treatment with 2% hemp extract, while most biochemical parameters of the seedlings were not significantly affected by the hemp extract.

AB - The European bioeconomy sector generates an annual turnover of around 2 trillion EUR with more than 17 million persons employed. However, in EU there is a lack of alternative crops, which could easily fit the existing rotations and produce valuable feedstocks for multiple end-uses. The diversity and diversification of farming systems can contribute to a sustainable European bioeconomy by securing stable revenues for farmers, lowering environmental negative impacts and increasing resilience to climatic, economic and biological risks. Carinata and camelina are perfect candidates to meet all these specific needs once integrated in agricultural systems with traditional staple crops. Camelina is a mature crop for European agriculture and the availability of winter and spring types makes it quite easily adapted to all European climates. Carinata is an emerging oilseed crop with high tolerance to heat and drought stress and can perfectly act as a late spring/summer double cropping in Mediterranean Europe as well as a main crop in marginal and poorly fertile soils with desertification risks. From both camelina and carinata different products could be obtained with a variety of potential uses: oil – as a feedstock for green chemistry; protein-rich cake - as animal feed ingredient directly or as protein concentrate, and a multitude of high added-value co-products, derived both from seed processing as well as from residual biomass.

AB - Sorghum grain (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a gluten-free cereal with excellent nutritional value and is a good source of antioxidants, including polyphenols, as well as minerals with proven health benefits. Herein, the phenolic composition, elemental profile, and antioxidant activity of sixteen food-grade sorghum grains (S1–S16) grown under agroecological conditions in Serbia were determined. Nine phenolic compounds characteristic of sorghum grains, such as luteolinidin, 5-methoxyluteolinidin, luteolidin derivative, luteolidin glucoside, apigeninidin, 7-methoxyapigeninidin, apigeninidin glucoside, and cyanidin derivative, were quantified. The antioxidant potential of the analyzed sorghum grains was evaluated by UV/Vis (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy (hydroxyl and ascorbyl radical scavenging assays). The content of macro- and microelements was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission spectroscopy. Theoretical daily intakes of selected major and trace elements were assessed and compared with the Recommended Daily Allowance or Adequate Intake. Sample S8 had the highest amount of phenolic compounds, while S4, S6, and S8 exhibited the strongest antioxidative potential. The sorghum studied could completely satisfy the daily needs of macro- (K, Mg, and P) and microelements (Se, Zn, Fe). Pattern recognition techniques confirmed the discrimination of samples based on phenolic profile and elemental analysis and recognized the main markers responsible for differences between the investigated samples. The reaction between hydroxyl radicals and luteolinidin/apigeninidin was investigated by Density Functional Theory and thermodynamically preferred mechanism was determined.

abstract = "Sorghum grain (Sorghum bicolor L. AB - Although being present much widely in terms of its geographical distribution, pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) represents one of the crucial species in forest ecosystems in South Eastern Europe. We wanted to contribute to existing efforts in designing genetic monitoring methodology for this noble broadleaved species, through the screening of genotypes with different health status and belonging to two phenological varieties [early (var. praecox) vs late (var. tardissima)] using seven oxidative stress parameters (total protein content, total phenolic compounds content, total flavonoids content, DPPH, ABTS, NO radical scavenger activities and Ferric reducing antioxidant power essay - FRAP). Results of this study provided significant biological message, contributing to better understanding of existing biodiversity of pedunculate oak in Serbia. Four out of seven oxidative stress screening tests (total phenolic compounds content, total flavonoids content, RSC NO and FRAP) clearly discriminated late vs early individuals sampled from selected pedunculate oak gene pool. Although presented results did not show significancy in using mentioned parameters to distinct damaged from vital individuals, nevertheless, knowledge gained through discussion and comparison with previous studies contributed to precise determination of biochemical tests which might be used in future efforts of genetic monitoring of this species.
dviju sorti hrasta lužnjaka (rani vs kasni). Fenološki varijeteti [rani (var. praecox) vs kasni (var. tardissima)] i fiziološka skupina (vitalne ili oštećene) bile su promatrane varijable u testiranih jedinki zbirnog radnog hrasta vitalnog (PEOV), zbirnog ranog hrasta oštećenog (PEOD), zbirnog kasnog vitalnog
(PLOV) i zbirnog ranog oštećenog (PLOD).

AB - The aim of this study was to test the quality (physicochemical and sensory odor properties) and bioactivity (antimicrobial and antioxidant activities) of the essential oils (EO) obtained from the most frequently cultivated lavender and lavandin varieties in Serbia, whose cultivation areas were previously reserved for warmer climates, outside the agroecological region of Serbia. Seven EO from true lavenders (L. angustifolia Mill. and cultivars: ‘Hidcote blue’, ‘Munstead’, ‘Primorska’), Croatian indigenous lavandin cultivar (L. intermedia ‘Budrovka’), lavandin ‘Grosso’ and one undetermined lavender sample (Lavandula sp.) showed compliance with standard requirements for lavender EO composition (contents of linalool 23.9–30.2% and 28.9–36.9%, and of linalyl acetate 22.2–32.2% and 6.9–20.7% in true lavender and lavandin samples, respectively). All EO were characterized as pleasant, with a floral aroma as a prominent odor. Samples exhibited high antimicrobial activities (3.5–14.2 µL mL-1 MIC and MBC values) against important Gram-positive (B. cereus and L. monocytogenes) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) and yeasts (C. albicans), and high antioxidant capacity (IC50 values of 0.23–0.59 g AAE mL-1 EO). This preliminary research on the quality of lavender EOs reveals the potential of this species for the future of medicinal and aromatic plant species production and further diversification of agriculture in the area.

AB - Rose essential oil is one of the most valuable and pivotal raw materials in the perfume industry. However, the limited yield of essential oil in rose flowers increased the interest of both breeders and scientists to create and discover species that have potential for multifaceted applications aiming to increase the economic viability of rose cultivation. Consequently, garden roses (Rosa hybrida) through ongoing development emerge as possibly profitable for cultivation and processing. This opens possibilities for numerous applications in both food and pharmaceutical industries. The main objective of this study was to identify the essential oil composition of R. hybrida cv. Mileva and compare it against essential oil chemical compositions of 32 accessions of other non-commercial (wild and hybrid) roses available literature. The dominant compound detected in R. hybrida cv. Mileva essential oil was geranyl acetate (47.9%), followed by nonadecane and heneicosane. It was shown that the essential oil possesses moderate antimicrobial activity, good antioxidant potential and strong anti-inflammatory activity.

AB - The location of cultivation, with its soil and climate specificities, has a significant impact on the chemical composition of plants. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of locality on the content of fatty acids in safflower oil. Genotype SO1 achieved the highest content of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, on average for all investigated localities. The highest content of arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and behenic acids was recorded for the genotype SO2, on average for all investigated localities. The highest MUFA content was observed at the Sombor location, while the highest SFA content was achieved at the Rimski šančevi location, and the highest PUFA content in safflower oil was recorded at the Pančevo location.

AB - A three-year experiment was conducted to determine the influence of ripening, variety and the production year (2017-2019) on seed and fruit quality of eggplant. The 1000 seed weight, germination capacity, the total protein and oil content of seeds as well as the total protein and sugar content of fruits were determined in three ripeness phases across three production years. All examined varieties exhibited significant differences in the weight of 1000 seeds during ripening, which varied from 1.44 to 4.42 g. Seeds extracted from fruits that reached commercial ripeness did not germinate. As the fruit ripens, its total sugar and protein content decreases, while the reverse is detected in the case of total protein and oil content of seeds. The full ripeness phase was the optimal time for harvesting fruits to obtain high germinating seeds.

povrtarskih vrsta.
