AB - Currently, there are increased interests in growing grain and fiber hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) as well as in large-scale hemp products. Cannabis has been grown/utilized for thousands of years as a fiber, grain, and drug/medicinal plant. However, the strict control of cannabis cultivation to combat illegal use, the spread of new yarns and oilseeds, and the advent of cheap synthetic fibers caused a decreased/eliminated hemp production. Hemp has been banned in most of the world for more than seven decades; it missed out on the Green Revolution and the adoption of new technologies and varieties, creating a knowledge gap. After the 2014 and 2018 Farm Bill in the USA, hemp became legal and the land grand universities launched research programs. The ability to utilize the entire plant for multiple purposes creates opportunity for the market to value hemp products. Hemp production technology varies depending on the type of hemp cultivated (grain, fiber, or cannabinoids), soil characteristics, and environmental factors. Hemp has the potential to be a very sustainable and ecologically benign crop. Hemp roots have a significant potential for absorbing and storing heavy metals such as lead, nickel, cadmium, and other harmful substances. In addition, hemp has been proven to be an excellent carbon trap and biofuel crop. Hemp has the ability to successfully suppress weeds, and it is generally regarded a pesticide-free crop. The purpose of this paper is to examine historic and recent industrial hemp (grain and fiber) literature, with a focus on hemp agronomy and utilization.

AB - The biological activity (contact and contact-digestive toxicity, repellent and fumigant effects, effect on the insect’s development and life cycle parameters) of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) ethanolic extract was assessed against Plodia interpunctella, the most destructive storage pest of sunflower. Additionally, the study aimed to examine the phytotoxic activity of the extract in order to assess its potential as a sunflower grain protectant. Phytotoxicity assessment was based on the effect on germination energy and seed germination and the activity of antioxidative enzymes, enzymes of the polyphenolic metabolism, and the intensity of lipid peroxidation in sunflower seedlings. The antioxidant capacity and content of phenolic compounds (total phenolics and total tannins) were also measured in seedlings. In the experiments, 70% ethanolic extract of dried flowering buds of industrial hemp (variety Helena) was applied at 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% concentrations directly on sunflower seeds. Ethanol solution (70%) was the control. The hemp extract (1% and 2%) revealed medium repellence for P. interpunctella larvae (L3–4) while at 2% concentration it caused 42.5% larval mortality after 72 h. Moreover, the insect’s development was prolonged and fecundity significantly reduced in hemp treatments. The extract did not exhibit fumigant activity. Germination energy and germination of sunflower seeds were stimulated in treatment with 2% hemp extract, while most biochemical parameters of the seedlings were not significantly affected by the hemp extract.

AB - In ancient cultures, the female flowers (cones) of hops were used to preserve drinks with a low alcohol content to which they gave a specific aroma. Today, they are used in the brewing, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industry. According to scientific data, hops have a sedative effect, and have a significant anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic potential. The main biologically active ingredients that influence these activities are essential oils, bitter substances (alpha and beta-acids), phytoestrogens and flavonoids (flavonol glycosides, condensed tannins and prenylflavonoids). The essential oil of hops is golden yellow, with a fresh and slightly sharp herbal aroma. The commercial production of essential oils is carried out by distilling the plant mass with water or steam. Since water is the solvent in both processes, these extraction techniques are classified as green technology. After the extraction of essential oils from plant material, hydrolate and solid residues (exhausted plant material) and are obtained as by-products.

AB - In past few decades, soybean breeders in Europe have been successful in producing a large number of commercial varieties using conventional breeding methods, most of all single seed descent (SSD) method with various modifications. As a supplement to conventional breeding methods, number of breeding tools like high‐throughput phenotyping, marker assisted selection, genomic selection, and others, are used to speed up the breeding process. Low genetic diversity is a major obstacle to soybean improvement. Therefore, projects between Europe and China, centre of origin of soybean, that involve germplasm exchange are intensified in recent years. Utilization of wild soybean species, especially perennial ones, bears a huge, still unused potential for improving soybean breeding process. Increased demand for non‐GMO soybeans, led to intensifying of soybean research throughout Europe which resulted in the number of companies that offer commercial soybean varieties. The oldest and best‐known among them are Lidea from France, Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Serbia, Agroscope from Switzerland, RAGT from France and a number of other companies which initiated soybean breeding programs later.

AB - Fertilizer application is requirement for achieving high and stable, economically justified soybean products. Sole ammonium nitrate application, as well as combined application of ammonium nitrate with NPK fertilizer and with foliar plant treatment with aqueous banana fruit extract contributes to soybean yield increase, grain protein content increase, as well as protein and oil yield per surface unit, and the combination of ammonium nitrate with NPK fertilizers, along with autumnal primary soil cultivation provides the best effects.

AB - In this study, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of digital image analysis (DIA) as a substitute for standard analysis (SA) in assessing corn ear traits in agrotechnical field trials. Accurate and timely prediction of corn yield through corn ear traits can lead to precise agricultural management recommendations for the improvement of production. Four replications with 10 plots each were subjected to different fertilization regimes and analyzed using DIA and SA to determine the kernel number per ear (KN), ear length (EL), and ear diameter (ED). For both methods, the results showed that only nitrogen doses had a significant effect on the examined corn ear traits, and the correlation matrix revealed a strong and significant relationship between yield and corn ear traits. The post-hoc test showed no discrepancy in cases between the two methods for KN and EL, with a 6.7% discrepancy for ED. For both methods, a linear plateau was the best fit for KN and EL with increasing nitrogen doses, whereas a quadratic plateau was the best fit for ED. The regression equations for both methods provided similar recommendations regarding nitrogen requirements. The findings suggest that DIA can be used as a substitute for SA of corn ear traits obtained from different fertilization variants and can provide nitrogen fertilization recommendations for optimal corn yields.

AB - Yellow or stripe rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) is an important disease of wheat that threatens wheat production. Since developing resistant cultivars offers a viable solution for disease management, it is essential to understand the genetic basis of stripe rust resistance. In recent years, meta-QTL analysis of identified QTLs has gained popularity as a way to dissect the genetic architecture underpinning quantitative traits, including disease resistance. Systematic meta-QTL analysis involving 505 QTLs from 101 linkage-based interval mapping studies was conducted for stripe rust resistance in wheat. For this purpose, publicly available high-quality genetic maps were used to create a consensus linkage map involving 138,574 markers. This map was used to project the QTLs and conduct meta-QTL analysis. A total of 67 important meta-QTLs (MQTLs) were identified which were refined to 29 high-confidence MQTLs. The confidence interval (CI) of MQTLs ranged from 0 to 11.68 cM with a mean of 1.97 cM. The mean physical CI of MQTLs was 24.01 Mb, ranging from 0.0749 to 216.23 Mb per MQTL. As many as 44 MQTLs colocalized with marker–trait associations or SNP peaks associated with stripe rust resistance in wheat. Some MQTLs also included the following major genes- Yr5, Yr7, Yr16, Yr26, Yr30, Yr43, Yr44, Yr64, YrCH52, and YrH52. Candidate gene mining in high-confidence MQTLs identified 1,562 gene models. Examining these gene models for differential expressions yielded 123 differentially expressed genes, including the 59 most promising CGs. We also studied how these genes were expressed in wheat tissues at different phases of development

AB - Mycotoxins in maize represent a great threat to human health. For this reason, novel technics such as ozone treatment are used to reduce the content of maize mycotoxins. However, there is little knowledge about the effect of ozone treatment on maize quality parameters. This study investigated the changes in Fusarium and Aspergillus mycotoxins and the changes in fatty acids during the ozone treatment of maize samples. Sixteen maize hybrids were visually tested for the naturally occurring ear rot severity and treated with three different concentrations of ozone (40, 70, and 85 mg/L). Mycotoxin content in maize samples was determined using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system, whereas dominant fatty acids were determined using gas chromatography coupled with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Ozone treatments could be successfully applied to reduce the content of mycotoxins in maize below the detection limit. Ozone treatments increased the content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and decreased the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), i.e., linoleic acid (36.7% in relation to the lowest applied ozone concentration), which negatively affected the nutritional value of maize.

AB - The objective of this study was to determine the content of phenolic
compounds (total phenolics, total tannins and total flavonoids) and antioxidant capacity by
six different assays in industrial hemp (‘Helena’ variety) extracted by four different
extraction solvents: 70% methanol, 70% ethanol, 70% acetone and water. Out of the four
solvent mixtures evaluated in the current study for the extraction of phenolic
compounds, the use of 70% acetone yielded to the highest total contents of phenolics
and exhibited the highest antioxidant activity in all performed assays.

AB - U cilju unapređenja organske proizvodnje razvojem novih tehnologija, primena bioregulatora, organskih i folijarnih đubriva sve više pronalazi mesto u naučno istraživačkom radu, ali i u praksi.
AB - In order to contribute to the explanation of the impact of the use of bioregulators, organic and foliar fertilizers on the yield components of wheat, the aim of the research was to perform a comparison of the use of bioregulators, liquid fertilizers and earthworm compost. The field trial with winter wheat NS-40S was carried out on the certified arable land of the Institute of field and vegetable crops in Bački Petrovac. The experiment was conducted in a split plot system with three replications. Plants were foliar treated as followed: 1) liquid fertilizer from nettles; 2) combination of liquid fertilizer of nettles and horsetail water extract (preparation „508“); 3) foliar treatment with Agrostemin®; 4) foliar treatment with Agrostemin® and combination of liquid fertilizer of nettles and horsetail water extract - AKR; 5) earthworm compost liquid foliar fertilizer. The control was untreated organic wheat and conventional (127 kg N/ha). Treatments were apllied according to plan in April and May during tillering and stem extension of winter wheat. Harvest was performed in full maturity.

AB - The aim of this paper was to test the effect of three plant growth regulators (PGR) on fiber content of hemp cultivar Helena. Applied PGRs, Cycocel®, Regalis® and Moddus® had impact on fiber content in hemp cultivar Helena in medium concentrations: 1-2, 1.25-2.5 and 0.4-0.5 kg/ha, respectively. Further analysis of fiber quality, after application of various PGRs concentrations, should explain which PGR should be used in hemp fiber production.

AB - Sunflower is one of the main crops in Serbia, with average acreage of 200000 ha. Economic difficulties associated with the transition have caused significant reduction in sunflower yields. The aim of this paper was to compare results from experiments and commercial production in order to identify the shortcomings, emphasize and quantify the definite average perennial influence of cultural practice implementation quality and timing on sunflower yields. This will enable sunflower growers to determine the relative effects of particular cultural practice on yield and thereby potentially increase the profitability. During 1994-2002 Institute of field and vegetable crops Novi Sad, conducted annual surveys among sunflower growers to gather data on sunflower growing technology used in Serbia. The interviewed growers hold 6.0-20.5% of the total sunflower acreage. This sample size should be sufficient to obtain a realistic picture of the used cultural practices. We also believe that the nine-year period is long enough for a reliable estimate of average long-term effect of applied cultural practice.
