AB - Maize is a globally significant cereal crop, contributing to the production of essential food products and serving as a pivotal resource for diverse industrial applications. This study investigated the proximate analysis of maize hybrids from different FAO maturity groups in Serbia, exploring variations in polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, tocopherols, and fatty acids with the aim of understanding how agroecological conditions influence the nutritional potential of maize hybrids. The results indicate substantial variations in nutritional composition and antioxidant properties among different maturity groups. The levels of total polyphenols varied among FAO groups, indicating that specific hybrids may offer greater health benefits. Flavonoids and carotenoids also showed considerable variation, with implications for nutritional quality. Tocopherol content varied significantly, emphasizing the diversity in antioxidant capacity. Fatty acid analysis revealed high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, indicating favorable nutritional and industrial properties. The study highlights the importance of considering maturity groups in assessing the nutritional potential of maize hybrids.

AB - In this paper is examined oil and protein content of 30 maize NS hybrids to evaluate it purpose for process industry. The standard Soxhlet method was used to determine the oil content, while the standard Kjeldahl method was used to determine the protein content. The average oil content in the grain of all tested hybrids ranged from 4.05% to 6.14% d.m. basis, while the average protein content ranged from 8.67% to 13.05% d.m. basis. Five NS maize hybrids can be characterized as high-oil hybrids, while only one corn hybrid had a value over 13% per d.m. basis.

AB - Suncokret je sve više ižložen negativnim uticajima klimatskih promena, posebno visokim
temperaturama i sušnim periodima, što neretko uzrokuje značajne varijacije i smanjenje prinosa
semena.
sprovodi svake godine multilokacijske mikro i proizvodne ogleda širom zemlje, testirajući
adaptabilnost i stabilnost novih i već raširenih hibrida suncokreta u različitim mikroklimatskim
uslovima. Tokom 2023. godine hibridi nove generacije, odnosno dva konvencionalna hibrida (NS
Kruna i NS Ronin) i dva Express (SUMO) hibrida (NS H 8002 i NS H 8005) posejani su u osam
regiona tj. okruga, kod četiri poljoprivredna proizvođača a u svakom okrugu.
hibridi u proseku ostvarili veće prinose u svim okruzima. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju da novosadski
hibridi nove generacije poseduju izuzetnu adaptabilnost, stabilnost, a pored toga i visok
potencijal za prinos u različitim agroekološkim uslovima širom Republike Srbije.

AB - This study aims to explore the influence of screw frequency, nozzle diameter, and press head temperature on critical crude fodder radish seed oil (FRSO) yield, throughput, and fatty acid composition. A quadratic equation, developed using response surface methodology, fitted the experimental data for oil yield. It was substantiated by a non-significant lack-of-fit, commendable coefficient-of-determination (R2 = 0.782), and a modest mean relative percentage deviation (±7.27%). The analysis of variance pinpointed the statistical significance of press head temperature, nozzle size, and the squared term of press head temperature. The highest FRSO yield (17.61%)—corresponding to an extraction efficiency of 51.3% was found with a screw frequency of 50 Hz, at 80°C, and an 8 mm nozzle. A linear model highlighted that all three pressing factors significantly influenced the FRSO throughput. FRSO consists of C18:1 (30.9%), C22:1 (20.8%), C18:2 (14.9%), and C18:3 (11.9%), aligning with the compositions reported in other studies on fodder radish oils.

AB - This chapter explores the profound impact of climate change on crop yields, emphasizing the importance of accurate climate scenarios for predicting agricultural futures. Rising temperatures due to global warming significantly alter plant phenological stages, shortening crucial periods such as reproduction and grain-filling, leading to reduced yields. Through comprehensive modeling studies, the research highlights both regional increases and decreases in crop productivity. While wheat yields might rise in specific regions such as Western Europe and Canada, significant reductions are anticipated in countries such as India and Pakistan. Similar challenges are faced by rice production, particularly in regions such as Central Asia and Europe, with potential global yield decreases of up to 13.1%. These findings underscore the urgent need for adaptation strategies, including crop changes and altered sowing seasons, emphasizing the critical role of precise predictions in mitigating climate change’s impact on global agriculture. Elevated CO2 levels lead to starch accumulation, diluting proteins and minerals in crops such as wheat and rice, while elevated temperatures and drought conditions affect grain constituents and oilseed quality. Additionally, climate change influences antinutrient levels and fosters mycotoxin-producing fungi, posing health risks. As climate change intensifies, innovative plant breeding approaches are crucial to develop resilient crops. Integration of high-throughput phenotyping, molecular markers, machine learning, CRISPR/Cas genome editing, and speed breeding creates a powerful toolkit. These multidisciplinary methods not only accelerate breeding but also ensure precision agriculture, enabling swift adaptation to climate challenges and securing the global food supply. Traditional breeding coupled with advanced genomic tools provides a foundation for creating climate-resilient “smart crops,” bridging the gap between production demands and unpredictable climate changes.

AB - Sunflower seeds are key agricultural commodities due to their nutritional and industrial value. This study aimed to analyze the distribution of targeted bioactive compounds and assess the physical properties across 27 sunflower seed genotypes, including parental lines and F1 and F2 hybrids, cultivated in Serbia. Various analytical techniques were employed to determine the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the seeds. This research revealed significant genetic variability in fatty acid profiles, with differences in polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acid levels among the genotypes. Hybrid seeds displayed variations in 1000-seed weight and bulk density compared to parental lines, which exhibited higher essential fatty acid contents and mechanical properties advantageous for industrial processing. These insights highlight the potential for refining breeding strategies to improve seed quality for specific industrial purposes. Overall, this study emphasizes the critical role of genetic selection in enhancing the nutritional and processing qualities of sunflower seeds, offering valuable perspectives for advancing agricultural and breeding practices.

AB - Sadržaj bioaktivnih jedinjenja u uljima i mastima je nizak, međutim njihov uticaj je izuzetno bitan. Ona imaju veliki metabolički značaj u organizmu, ispoljavaju antioksidativno dejstvo, antiradikalnu aktivnost, vitaminsko delovanje, zaštitni efekat i sl.
AB - The content of bioactive compounds in oils and fats is low, but their impact is extremely important. They have great metabolic significance in the body, exhibit antioxidant effects, antiradical activity, vitamin action, protective effect, etc. This study examined the content of bioactive compounds in cold-pressed oils of 15 sunflower hybrids. The content of total tocopherols, phenols, carotenoids, chlorophylls, and sterols was examined. Cold-pressed oils contain the highest total sterols (on average 1505.824±152.96 mg/kg), followed by total tocopherols (524.45±98.59 mg/kg). The approximate average values of the content of total carotenoids and phenols were observed, 9.10±0.13 mg/kg and 8.91±0.30 mg/kg, respectively, while the content of total chlorophyll was the lowest, only 0.73±0.32 mg/kg, on average. The obtained values of the content of bioactive compounds are characteristic of cold-pressed sunflower oil and are in line with previous research.

AB - Sunflower seeds and their oils have been integral to human diets since ancient times, offering a rich source of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial fatty acids. Notably, sunflower seeds contain significant levels of phenolic compounds, including flavonoids and polyphenols, renowned for their nutraceutical properties that promote human health. These compounds exhibit potent antioxidant activity, crucial for combating oxidative stress-related ailments such as premature aging, cardiovascular issues, neurodegenerative disorders, and certain cancers. In this study, we examined the oil, protein and tocopherols contents, as well as the levels of total polyphenols and flavonoids, across 20 different sunflower genotypes to assess the potential of these seeds as a source of valuable natural compounds. The seed's oil percentage was determined using Maran Ultra Resonance NMR, while protein content was assessed via the Dumas method. Total flavonoid content was measured using AlCl3 colorimetry, and polyphenol content was estimated using the Folin-Ciocalteu assay.

AB - Sunflower is a globally important oilseed crop mainly used for oil in human consumption, while secondary products have nutritional value in livestock feed. Neverthless there have been advancements in breeding sunflower genotypes with desirable traits, high yield, and disease resistance, further research is needed to address emerging challenges, such as climate resilience and sustainability. Bearing in mind that sunflower breeding over the last several decades has mainly foucused on biotic and abiotic resilience, sunflower oil content in hybrids has remained at the same level, 40-50%. Considering the trends of climate change, drought tolerance certainly represents an essential trait in breeding programs worldwide. The question arises whether it is time to further orient in sunflower breeding towards increasing oil content, bearing in mind that in light of increasingly frequent dry years. It is very difficult to make progress in seed yield. The aim of our study was to develop sunflower genotypes characterized by drought tolerance and increased oil content (>55%). Initial plant material was selected from a gene pool of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. We used a traditional approach by crossing highly drought tolerant inbred lines characterized by oil content ranging from 50-52%. Genetic material for drought tolerance was selected based on field trials and in vitro drought conditions, over six vegetations (3 vegetations in field conditions and 3 vegetations in in vitro conditions). Oil content was determined using nuclear magnetic resonance analyzer (NMR, Maran Ultra-10). The pedigree method of selection was used to develop new genetic material with desirable traits. As a result, we developed seven inbred lines designated as DO1 to DO7 characterized by high drought tolerance and high oil content ranging from 55.09% to 60.39%. Our results revealed that there is a possibility for significant improvement in sunflower oil content while simultaneously breeding for drought resistant. Further studies will include biotechnological tools in order to identify QTLs associated with drought tolerance and increased oil content and to develop markers associated with traits of interest in order to accelerate the breeding process.

AB - Organic agriculture has to satisfy a growing need for food satety with maintaining
soil fertility and ameliorating climate change effects. NS confectionary hybrids have good
characteristics, uniform color and size and are suitable for machine dehulling. They are used
for production of both large amounts of unrefined cold pressed oil and oilcake. Testing NS
confenctinary hybrids under different production systems (conventional and organic) is
important when breeding for hybrids with a wide degree of adaptability to different
cultivation conditions The specific treatments were analyzed under organic cultivation
condition. The application of the Guanito organic fertilizer at a dose of 0.5t ha-1 applied
during the BBCH 01 stage, the application of Trainer at 3l ha-1 and Natur Plasma at 5l ha-1,
were applied during the BBCH 36 stage. This was compared to a purely conventional
treatment with mixed NPK fertilizer (50:50:50), and a control cultivation in organic
production with no treatment. Five different confenctionary hybrids were analyzed under
above conditions, making for 25 unique test conditions. fatty acids, oil content and tocopherol
in sunflower seed were measured under lab condition. The analysis firstly was performed with
one level ANOVA on both hybrids and different treatments, as well as with two-level
ANOVA. Differences between hybrids were found to be significant in the one-way ANOVA
for 4 different kind offatty acids, and seed oil content. No ignificant was found with one-way
ANOVA test among different treatments. Two-way ANOVA analysis for alpha-tocopherol
has been confirmed the significant differences among tested hybrids., The significant
interaction were detected between both hybrids and treatments for palmytic, stearic and
linoleic content, as well as the significant differences for hybrids is only detected on oleic
content. Due to there is no significant differences was found between different models with
the Akaike Information Criterion, that's why Wilcox’s robust two-way ANOVA analogue was
used with n = 1000 for subsampling. A robust one-way ANOVA analogue was applied using
Wilcox’s algorithm and Welch’s method with 20% trimmed means and 5000 subsampling
steps. Significant results were found for stearic, oleic, linoleic and oil content. Given that
these models have been validated with robust statistics, they were elected as suitable for post
hoc analysis. Preliminary result analysis shows that there are no statistically significant
differences between organic, control and conventional treatments. It detects no significant
differences in tocopherol levels between different hybrids, but the available datashowed the
significant (at a 0.001 level) differences in fatty acid and oil content. Further work should be
developed to study the use of organic fertilizers on NS confenctionary hybrids so as to creat
the organic growth conditions for sunflower.

AB - Oilseed crops are widely cultivated and are related to nutrition and human health as
valuable nutraceutical sources with valuable biological properties. The growing demand for oil
plants used in human and animal nutrition or for the processing industry has contributed to the
diversification and development of a new variety of oil crops. Increased oil crop diversity, besides
ensuring reduced sensitivity to pests and climate conditions, has also led to improved nutritional
values. In order to enable oil crop cultivation to become commercially sustainable, a comprehensive
characterization of newly created varieties of oilseeds, including their nutritional and chemical
composition, is required. In this study, two varieties of safflower and white and black mustard were
investigated as alternative oil species for nutritional parameters, mainly protein, fat, carbohydrate,
moisture, ash, polyphenols, flavonoids, chlorophylls contents, acids and mineral composition, and
compared with those of two different genotypes of rapeseeds as a traditional oil crop plant. The
proximate analysis found that the highest oil content was found in the oil rape NS Svetlana genotype
(33.23%), while the lowest was in black mustard (25.37%). The protein content varies from around 26%
in safflower samples to 34.63%, determined in white mustard. High content of unsaturated fatty acids
and low content of saturated fatty acid was observed in the analyzed samples. In mineral analysis,
the dominant elements were phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium, in descending order.
The observed oil crops are also good sources of microelements, including iron, copper, manganese
and zinc, accompanied by high antioxidant activity due to the presence of significant amounts of
polyphenolic and flavonoid compounds

AB - U Srbiji se visokoproteinski konzumni hibridi suncokreta proizvode u manjem obimu u konvencionalnim i organskim uslovima proizvodnje, uz stalno povećanje površina pod organskom proizvodnjom.

AB - In this work, the chemical composition analysis was performed for cold pressed oils
obtained from the 15 sunflower hybrids grown in Serbia and Argentina, as well as the determination of their oxidative quality. The fatty acid composition and bioactive compounds including total tocopherols, phenols, carotenoids, and chlorophyll contents were investigated. The oxidation products were monitored through the peroxide value (PV), anisidine value (AnV), conjugated dienes (CD) and conjugated trienes (CT) content, and total oxidation index (TOTOX) under accelerated oxidation conditions by the oven method.
Results: Linoleic acid was the most abundant fatty acid in investigated oil samples, followed by oleic and palmitic acids. The mean contents of total tocopherols, phenols, carotenoids, and chlorophyll were 518.24, 9.42, 7.54 and 0.99 mg/kg, respectively. In order to obtain an overview
of sample variations according to the tested parameters Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was
applied.
Conclusion: PCA indicated that phenols, chlorophyll, linoleic and oleic acid were the most
effective variables for the differentiation of sunflower hybrids grown in Serbia and Argentina.
Furthermore, based on the fatty acid composition and bioactive compounds content in the oils, a
new Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was developed to predict the oxidative stability
parameters of cold pressed sunflower oil.

AB - Cold pressing is frequently used to produce high-quality vegetable oils, especially from seeds with high oil content, such as rapeseeds. But, it encounters a challenge from the industrial demand for high oil yield. Modeling the cold pressing process using experimental and statistical approaches would help to understand the effects of cold pressing conditions on oil yield and process efficacy. Therefore, this work aimed to investigate the effects of nozzle diameter (8–12 mm), screw frequency (40–60 Hz), and press head temperature (40–80 °C) on the oil recovery from rapeseeds by cold pressing using response surface methodology coupled with a 33 full factorial design. An extended quadratic equation fitted the experimental data accurately and reproducibly, as proved by the acceptable coefficient-of-determination (R2 = 0.873), a not significant lack-of-fit (p = 0.872), and a very low mean relative percentage deviation (± 6.7%, 35 data). The ANOVA revealed that nozzle diameter, press head temperature, their interaction, three-factor interaction, and squared nozzle diameter influenced pressed oil yield significantly. The optimal condition for obtaining the highest pressed oil yield (26.7%) within the experimental domain was a nozzle diameter of 10 mm, a screw frequency of 50 Hz, and a press head temperature of 80 °C. The crude oil extraction degree achieved by cold pressing was 60.8% compared to the Soxhlet method. The rapeseed oil contains predominantly oleic, linoleic, linolenic, and palmitic acids, agreeing with other reported rapeseed oils.

AB - Oxidative stability is one of the most important parameters of edible oil quality. It indicates the possibility of using the oil in technological processes, as well as the shelf life. The fatty acids composition is of particular importance from the aspect of oxidative stability. The higher the unsaturated fatty acids content and the lower saturated fatty acids content is, the faster the oxidation reaction takes place. The most susceptible to oxidative changes is linolenic fatty acid, followed by linoleic and oleic fatty acids. Improving the oxidative stability of the oil can be achieved by adding different components with antioxidant properties such as synthetic antioxidants, plant extracts or plants. In this paper, the effect of adding rosemary and garlic to linoleic and high-oleic sunflower oil on quality and oxidative stability was investigated.

AB - Camelina sativa is a member of the Brassicaceae family and is characterized as an annual oilseed plant with a short growth cycle. Its seeds offer rich nutritional value comparable with other feed and food sources due to the presence of high-quality oils, protein, essential fatty acids, and bioactive compounds. Our study investigated mineral profile and bioactive compound contents among two different camelina genotypes. The evaluated camelina genotypes NS Zlatka and NS Slatka were developed in Serbia. The bioactive compound investigation included total phenolic and flavonoid contents, chlorophyll a and b, and total carotenoid contents. Furthermore, antioxidant activity was assessed by measuring the DPPH-scavenging capacity of camelina seed extracts. The results demonstrate differences in mineral content between the two genotypes, with variations in sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, and phosphorus levels.

AB - With the aid of models used in artificial intelligence, a wide range of data can be processed quickly with high accuracy. The quality of rapeseed oil from 40 genotypes cultivated during four consecutive years was analysed. Two machine learning techniques (artificial neural network – ANN, and random forest regression – RFR) were applied for the modelling of fatty acids content (C16:0; C18:0; C18:1; C18:2; C18:3 and C22:1), α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol and total tocopherols, according to the data of production year and winter rapeseed genotype. The developed models exerted high-quality anticipation features, showing high r2 during the training cycle. The best fit between the modelled and measured traits for ANN model was observed for erucic acid content. RFR modelling for all fatty acids was more effective than ANN model, with the highest precision for palmitic, stearic, and oleic fatty acids (r2>0.9). This study emphasized the possibility of using ANN and RFR models to model winter rapeseed quality traits.

AB - The location of cultivation, with its soil and climate specificities, has a significant impact on the chemical composition of plants. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of locality on the content of fatty acids in safflower oil. Genotype SO1 achieved the highest content of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, on average for all investigated localities. The highest content of arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and behenic acids was recorded for the genotype SO2, on average for all investigated localities. The highest MUFA content was observed at the Sombor location, while the highest SFA content was achieved at the Rimski šančevi location, and the highest PUFA content in safflower oil was recorded at the Pančevo location.

AB - Agriculture is one of the “victims” of climate change and one of the most severely affected sectors. It has become evident that as the climate changes, crop production strategies must change as well, including primarily adaptations through breeding and crop management. In the future, it is expected that integrative approaches that combine -omics technologies by using bioinformatic tools will facilitate the identification of target genes and markers for complex traits and facilitate crop adaptation to the changing environment. Within its activities, Twinning project CROPINNO will implement at and validate different phenotyping and multi-omics tools in breeding for improved stress resilience. Sunflower is chosen as a model crop for validation of different tools and approaches since it is considered as potential model crop for adaptation to a changing environment. Activities within CROPINNO are aimed at: i) pre-screening sunflower genotypes from IFVCNS collection using for biotic and abiotic stress resilience using different phenotyping methods; ii) study of effects of drought on sunflower plants at chromatin and transcriptional level; iii) performing whole genome SNP analysis in order to develop SNP-based markers for drought stress resilience; iv) performing integrated data analysis and comparative bioinformatics for drought responses in order to unveil possible direct correlations between stress-induced genes transcriptional variation and histone modification levels and design of networks of candidate genes for sunflower drought tolerance. Models, tools and know-how developed on sunflower will be transferred and implemented in the breeding programs of other main field crops at IFVCNS and Western Balkans region.
