Forage yield components and classification of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) cultivars of diverse geographic origin

AB  - Conventional breeding programmes on common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) are based on knowledge of relationships between forage yield components and economically important characteristics. To improve this knowledge, a small-plot trial was carried out in 2005 and 2006 at Rimski Sancevi, Serbia, with fourteen common vetch accessions from the Novi Sad Vicia collection of diverse geographic origin and collection status. Results showed significant variability in forage yield components and related characteristics. Two-year average values of forage dry matter (DM) yield ranged from 8.0 t ha(-1) (cvs. Armantes and Labari) to 10.2 t ha(-1) (cv. Slavej). The highest 2-year average concentration of crude protein (CP) was for cv. Armantes (239 g kg(-1) DM). Highly significant positive genetic correlation coefficients were found between time from sowing to first flowering and main stem length (0.938) and between number of stems per plant and CP content in the forage DM (0.910). Significant positive phenotypic correlation coefficients were detected between main stem length and time from sowing to first flowering (0.830). A cluster analysis showed four main groups of cultivars based on the recorded forage yield components and related characteristics. It is concluded that common vetch represents a stable and reliable source of protein-rich forage for regions such as the Balkans area of SE Europe. Genetic variability within common vetch and knowledge of the tested cultivars offer a basis for further improvement and developing novel cultivars.

Breeding autumn-sown annual legumes for temperate regions

AB  - Annual legumes are one of the fundamental crops of the agriculture of Serbia. Until recent times, only pea (Pisum sativum L.) or vetches (Vicia L.) were autumn-sown in Serbia and other neighbouring Balkan countries. During the last decade, the first seminal steps in the development of autumn-sown grain legumes were made, with emphasis on dry pea, faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and dual-purpose vetches. The winter forage pea cultivars developed in Serbia are generally characterised by prominent winter hardiness and a rather extended growing season, usually beginning with sowing in early October and ending either by cutting for forage production in late May or harvesting seeds in mid-July. One of the strategic advantages of recently released cultivars of autumn-sown dry pea is their significantly improved earliness. The Serbian winter dry pea cultivar NS Mraz, newly registered in Serbia in 2011 and developed from hybrids between French and Serbian autumn-hardy materials, is regularly at least a week earlier than winter barley, so many farmers will not have to choose between pea and cereals due to limited harvesting resources.

AB  - Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is the second most important perennial forage legume, after alfalfa. It is a significant source of proteins, which are essential in the diet of domestic animals, especially ruminants. The objective of this study was to determine the most important characteristics of dry matter quality (crude proteins, structural carbohydrates, fats and minerals) in three varieties of red clover (K-17, Kolubara and Una). The characteristics were monitored, per individual cuts, during one production cycle of red clover, i.e., in the period 2004- 2006. Highest contents of crude protein in all three test years were obtained in the second cut. Significantly increased contents of crude proteins (18.32%) and potassium (K-2.53%) were found in the red clover cultivar Una developed in Novi Sad. Significantly increased values of both cellulose fiber fractions (NDF, ADF) were registered in the second year of growing. The highest content of minerals was determined at the beginning of the growing season in the first and second year (8.68% and 8.52%, respectively). Here it should be mentioned that the contents of basic biogenous elements, phosphorus and potassium, were within the expected optimum range.
AB  - Crvena detelina (Trifolium pratense L.) je druga po značaju višegodišnja krmna leguminoza. Slično lucerki značajan je izvor proteina, neophodnih u ishrani domaćih životinja, a naročito preživara. Cilj rada je bio da se tokom jednog proizvodnog ciklusa crvene deteline, u periodu 2004-2006. godine po otkosima utvrde najvažniji parametri kvaliteta suve materije: sadržaj sirovih proteina, strukturnih ugljenih hidrata, masti i mineralnih materija kod tri domaće sorte crvene deteline: K-17, Kolubara i Una. Najveći sadržaj sirovih proteina u sve tri godine ispitivanja je utvrđen u drugom otkosu. Značajno veći sadržaj sirovih proteina (18,32 %) i kalijuma (K-2,53 %) je utvrđen kod NS-sorte crvene deteline Une. Statistički značajno veće vrednosti obe frakcije celuloznih vlakana (NDF, ADF) su utvrđene u drugoj godini života crvene deteline. Najveći sadržaj mineralnih materija je utvrđen početkom vegetacije prve (8,68 %) i druge godine proizvodnog ciklusa (8,52 %) crvene deteline, pri čemu treba istaći da se sadržaj osnovnih biogenih elementa: fosfora i kalijuma nalazio u očekivanim optimalnim granicama.

Dry pea seed quality depending on seed moisture at harvest and cultivar

AB  - The effect of seed moisture content at harvest on the most important parameters of dry pea was examined. The seed moisture content, germination energy, germination, proportion of abnormal seedlings and 1000-seed weight were analyzed in three dry pea cultivars (Jezero, Javor and NS-Junior) and at eight harvest stages. At the first harvest stage, seed moisture content was 20.44%, while at the eighth stage it was 11.26%. The best seed quality, with germination energy of 81.70% and germination of 90.11%, was at the sixth harvest time when seed moisture content was 12.92%. The poorest seed quality one was at the first harvest stage, with germination energy of 68.55% and germination of 78.56%. Cultivar Jezero, with shorter growing season, determinant stem growth and uniform maturity, had the highest germination energy (82.00%), germination (92.21%) and percent of abnormal seedlings (1.96%). Cultivar NS Junior, with the longest growing season, indeterminant stem growth and non-uniform maturity, had the lowest germination energy (70.39%) and germination (76.54%), and the highest percent of abnormal seedlings (3.58%).
AB  - U radu je ispitivan uticaj vlažnosti semena u žetvi na najznačajnije parametre kvaliteta proteinskog graška. Analizirana je vlažnost semena u momentu žetve, energija klijanja, klijavost, udeo atipičnih ponika i masa 1000 semena kod tri sorte (Jezero, Javor i NS Junior) pri osam rokova žetve. Prvi rok žetve bio je sa sadržajem vlage od 20,44%, a poslednji, osmi, sa 11,26%. Najbolji kvalitet semena (energija klijanja 81,78%, klijavost 90,11%) bio je pri šestom roku žetve u kojem je vlaga iznosila 12,92%, a najlošiji pri prvom roku (energija 68,55%, klijavost 78,56%). Najvišu energiju klijanja (82,00%), klijavost (92,21%) i najmanji udeo atipičnih ponika (1,96%) imala je sorta Jezero koja se odlikuje najkraćom vegetacijom, determinantnim porastom stabla i ujednačenim sazrevanjem. Najnižu energiju klijanja (70,39%), klijavost (76,54%) i najveći udeo atipičnih ponika (3,58%) imala je sorta NS Junior, sa najdužom vegetacijom, nedeterminantnim porastom stabla i neujednačenim sazrevanjem.

AB  - In plants with bisexual flowers, the development of hybrids and F1 seed production is only possible by using cytoplasmatic male sterility. The discovery of such sterility and the maintainers has made it possible to utilize the phenomenon of heterosis to improve yields and yield components in forage sorghum. It has been shown that the best way to develop forage sorghum hybrids is to cross grain sorghum as the female parent and Sudan grass as the male. The objective of this study was to develop a forage sorghum hybrid for the production of green matter to be used either fresh or for silage. The sorghum hybrid developed in these efforts (Siloking) is intended for multiple cutting, as the basal nodes produce buds and regrowth takes place. The performance of the new hybrid with respect to yield and quality was compared to that of the forage sorghum cultivar NS Džin. In a two-year study conducted under different growing conditions in four locations, Siloking produced an average green matter yield of 86.29 t ha-1 (two cuts), a dry matter yield of 25.34 t ha-1, and a crude protein content of 11.85 %. Siloking outperformed NS Džin in terms of yield and quality.
AB  - Kod biljaka sa dvopolnim cvetom stvaranje hibrida i proizvodnja F1 semena jedino je moguća korišćenjem citoplazmatske-genetske muške sterilnosti. Otkrićem muške sterilnosti i održivača omogućeno je iskorišćavanje efekta heterozisa prvenstveno na prinos i komponente prinosa kod krmnog sirka. Za stvaranje hibrida krmnog sirka najbolje su se pokazala ukrštanja sirka za zrno (majka hibrida) i sudanske trave (otac hibrida). Cilj rada je bilo stvaranje hibrida krmnog sirka za proizvodnju zelene mase, koja će se koristiti u svežem stanju ili za siliranje. AB  - Until the end of 2008, there have been developed and registered in Serbia 32 cultivars of annual forage legumes and 2 cultivars of forage brassicas. The latest NS cultivar of winter forage pea, Pešter, has yields of between 45 and 50 t ha-1 of green forage and about 10 t ha-1 of forage dry matter. In preliminary testing, the latest NS cultivars of spring feed pea, Partner, Kristal and Dukat, had average grain yields of about 5 t ha-1, with a prominent earliness. The first Serbian field bean cultivars, Gema and Šarac, had a great potential for grain yields, having achieved yields of more than 6 t ha-1 in both preliminary and comparative testing. By further individual selection from the cultivar-population of winter fodder kale NS-Bikovo, there has been developed and in 2007 registered the cultivar Perast, with a great potential for green forage yields, of about 70 t ha-1 in average.
AB  - Do kraja 2008. godine, u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo su stvorene i u Srbiji priznate 32 sorte jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki i 2 sorte krmnih kupusnjača. Najnovija NS sorta ozimog krmnog graška, Pešter, odlikuje se prinosima od između 45 i 50 t ha-1 zelene krme i oko 10 t ha-1 suve materije krme. U preliminarnim ispitivanjima, najnovije NS sorte jarog proteinskog graška, Partner, Kristal i Dukat, ostvarile su prosečne prinose od oko 5 t ha-1, uz izraženu ranostasnost. Prve srpske sorte stočnog boba, Gema i Šarac, odlikuju se velikim potencijalom za prinos zrna, ostvarivši prinose od preko 6 t ha-1 u preliminarnim i komparativnim ispitivanjima. Daljom individualnom selekcijom iz sorte-populacije ozimog stočnog kelja NS-Bikovo, stvorena je i 2007. godine, priznata sorta Perast, koja se odlikuje velikim potencijalom za prinos zelene krme, u proseku od blizu 70 t ha-1.

U oglede su bile uključene i dve novostvorene novosadske linije jarog stočnog boba, B-412 i B-413, i češka sorta Uran, kao standard. Obe linije priznate su kao nove sorte 2007. godine pod imenima Gema i Šarac. U proseku, prinos zrna sve tri novostvorene sorte bio je veći u poređenju sa standardnom sortom, sa najvećim prosečnim prinosom zrna kod sorte Partner (2732 kg ha-1). Sve tri sorte pokazale su da, u povoljnijim godinama, mogu da ostvare prinose i veće od 3500 kg ha-1. Sadržaj sirovih proteina kretao se od 278,3 g kg-1, kod sorte Javor, do 307,0 g kg-1, kod sorte Dukat. .",

AB  - For more than 50 years of breeding in the Forage Crops Department of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, many forage crops have been developed 14 cultivars of lucerne, 2 cultivars of red clover and 41 cultivars and hybrids of annual forage crops, namely field pea, vetches, forage sorghum, Sudan grass and fodder kale. AB  - Za više od 50 godina rada na oplemenjivanju lucerke u Odeljenju za krmno bilje Instituta stvoreno je 14 sorti. Kao rezultat dosadašnjeg rada na oplemenjivanju crvene deteline primenom masovne, odnosno fenotipske rekurentne selekcije do sada su priznate dve sorte. Do danas je u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu stvoreni u Srbiji i svetu priznata 41 sorta jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki, krmnog sirka, sudanske trave i stočnog kelja. Paralelno sa stvaranjem novih sorti i hibrida krmnih biljaka, u cilju što većeg stepena iskorišćenja genetskog potencijala, intenzivno se radi na unapređenju i usavršavanju tehnologije proizvodnje. Rad na unapređenju proizvodnje semena krmnih biljaka obavljao se od samog početka formiranja Odeljenja za krmno bilje, paralelno sa oplemenjivanjem.

AB  - This paper describes the achievements of the forage breeding program of the Forage Crops Department of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad from 1946 till 2006. The program has involved work on nine species of forage crops and has produced 51 cultivars registered in Serbia and seven registered abroad. It started with the breeding of alfalfa as the most important forage crop species. The alfalfa part of the program can be divided into several cycles according to the different cultivars that marked each cycle. The most important among these are the cultivars NS Banat ZMS II and NS Mediana ZMS V, which are very widely grown in commercial production and have high yields and excellent quality (Tab. 1 and 2). A total of 13 alfalfa cultivars have been developed so far at the Institute using different breeding methods. The new alfalfa cultivars Banat VS and NS Alfa are characterized by high yields and quality of hay and forage (Tab. 3 and 4). They are better adapted to Serbian growing conditions than the foreign cultivars and are also better than them in terms of yields and quality. The Forage Crops Department started breeding red clover in the 1990s and this is its youngest program. In a short period of time, two red clover cultivars have been developed, Kolubara and Una (Fig. 1 and 2). The Department's breeding of annual forage legumes is based on the preservation and sustainable use of genetic resources from its collection of annual forage le gumes. This part of the program places special focus on breeding for forage and grain yields and also focuses on increased resistance to abiotic stress. Self-pollinated forage legumes are bred by the pedigree method, bulk method and backcrossing. These breeding procedures have been used to develop the widely known MS cultivars of winter forage pea (Pionir), winter vetch (Meoplanta), spring fodder pea (Junior, Jezero), and spring vetch (Movi Beograd), which produce outstandingly high yields of excellent quality (Tab. 5 and 6). Breeding of forage sorghums and Sudan grass consists in developing cultivars (Titan, Sava, MS Šećerac) and hybrids (MS Čiker, and Siloking) that have a large potential for high and stable yields and are suitable for use as green forage, hay and silage (Tab. 7).
AB  - U radu su predstavljena dostignuća u oplemenjivanju krmnih biljaka u Zavodu za krmno bilje Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo, u periodu 1947 - 2006. Radom na 9 vrsta krmnog bilja, stvorena je 51 sorta priznata u Srbiji i 7 sorti u inostranstvu. Prvi pro gram oplemenjivanja krmnog bilja u Institutu započet je na lucerki kao najznačajnijoj krmnoj biljci. Može se podeliti u nekoliko ciklusa, koji se odlikuju stvorenim sortama, od kojih su izuzetno raširene u proizvodnji, NS Banat ZMS II i NS Mediana ZMS V. Različitim metodama oplemenjivanja do sada je u Novom Sadu stvoreno 13 sorti lucerke. Nove sorte lucerke (Banat VS i NS Alfa), široke su genetske osnove adaptabilnije od stranih sorti na uslove gajenja u Srbiji, a po prinosu i kvalitetu su bolje. Oplemenjivanje jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki zasnovano je na očuvanju i održivom korišćenju genetičkih resursa jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki oličenih u Zbirci jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki, sa naglaskom na oplemenjivanje na prinos krme i zrna kao glavnim pravcima i oplemenjivanjem na povećanje otpornosti na abiotski stres. U oplemenjivanju samooplodnih krmnih mahunarki primenjuju se pedigre metod, balk metod i povratno ukrštanje kao najraširenije metode. Ovim oplemenjivačkim procedurama stvorene su široko poznate sorte ozimog krmnog graška (Pionir), ozime grahorice (Neoplanta), jarog stočnog graška (Junior, Jezero) i jare grahorice (Novi Beograd). Oplemenjivanje krmnih sirkova i sudanske trave vrši se stvaranjem sorti (Titan, Sava, NS Šećerac) i hibrida (NS Čiker i Siloking) izraženog potencijala za visoke i stabilne prinose, koji su pogodni za iskorišćavanje u vidu zelene krme, sena i silaže.

Achievements in breeding annual forage crops in Serbia

AB  - Annual forage crops have long tradition of growing in Serbia and take a prominent place in diverse farming systems, representing an indispensible source of supplying animal husbandry with quality feed. So far, there have have been developed 21 cultivars of annual forage legumes in Serbia, with ten cultivars of field pea, eight cultivars of common vetch, two cultivars of hairy vetch and one cultivar of Hungarian vetch (Table 1). The main direction in breeding annual forage legumes is for aimed at yield, comprising breedinf for forage yield, breeding for grain yield and breeding for forage and grain yield. Other directions in breeding annual forage legumes are aimed at the improvement of tolerance to low temperatures, drought, soil reaction and diseases and pests. Breeding forage sorghum and Sudan Grass resulted in ten cultivars and hybrids (Table 2), while breeding forage brassicas resulted in the only Serbian cultivar of fodder kale NS-Bikovo.
AB  - Jednogodišnje krmne biljke imaju dugu tradiciju gajenja u Srbiji i zauzimaju istaknuto mesto u različitim načinima biljne proizvodnje, predstavljajući nezamenljiv izvor snabdevanja stočarstva kvalitetnom kabastom i koncentrovanom stočnom hranom. Do danas, u Srbiji je stvorena i priznata 21 sorta jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki, od čega deset sorti stočnog graška osam sorti obične grahorice, dve sorte maljave grahorice i jedna sorta panonske grahorice. Osnovni pravac oplemenjivanja jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki usmeren je na prinos, obuhvatajući tri dodatna pravca, odnosno oplemenjivanje na prinos krme, prinos zrna i prinos krme i zrna. Ostali pravci oplemenjivanja jednogodišnjih krmnih mahunarki usmereni su na povećanje tolerantnosti na nepovoljne uslove sredine, kao što su niske temperature, suša, i reakcija zemljišnog rastvora. Rezultat oplemenjivanja krmnog sirka i sudanske trave u Srbiji ogleda se u deset stvorenih i priznatih sorti i hibrida, dok je rezultat oplemenjivanja krmnih kupusnjača jedina domaća sorta stočnog kelja NS-Bikovo.

AB  - Eight cms lines of forage sorghum (P-172, A 33 S nib.675, S-8 682, P-80 SS-3 678, P-48 642, P-158, SS-1 662, P-188) and two sudangrass R lines serving as testers (Savana -282, ST-312) were studied for their combining abilities for plant height in the first and second cuts in 2006. The combining abilities were calculated using line x tester analysis. Among the eight cms lines, the best general combiners were the line P48 642 in the first cut and the line P-172 in the second. Of the two Klines, the Sudan grass genotype ST-312 was the better general combiner in both cuts. The highest SCA value was found in the P-172 x Savana 282 cross in the first cut and in P-188 x ST 312 in the second. Positive SCA values in the two cuts were found in P-172 x ST- 312 A-33 S nib. 675 x Savana 282, and SS-1 662xST312.
AB  - Ispitivane su kombinacione sposobnosti za osam cms linije krmnog sirka (P-172, A 33 S hib.675, S-8 682, P-80 SS-3 678, P-48 642, P-158, SS-1 662 P-188) i dve R linije sudanske trave, koje su poslužile kao testeri (Savana -282, ST-312) za svojstvo visina biljaka u prvom i drugom otkosu u 2006. godini. Kombinacione sposobnosti su izračunati primenom analize linija x tester. Između osam cms linija najbolji opšti kombinator u prvom otkosu je bila linija P48 642, a u drugom otkosu linija P-172. Među R linijama u oba otkosa bolji opšti kombinator je bila sudanska trava ST-312. Najveću vrednost PKS je pokazalo ukrštanje P-172 x Savana 282 u prvom otkosu, odnosno u drugom otkosu ukrštanje P-188 x ST 312. Pozitivne vrednosti PKS u prvom i drugom otkosu imali su hibridi P-172 x ST- 312, A-33 S hib. 675 x Savana 282 i SS-1 662 x ST 312.

AB  - The target of forage crops breeding programs of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops is the development of high-yielding cultivars and hybrids. Furthermore, new cultivars and hybrids should also possess satisfactory quality (chemical- technological characteristics) and desirable morphological-biological characteristics (tillering, regrowth, overwintering resistance to diseases and pests). As a result of continued breeding work and exploitation of a rich genetic collection, the Institute s breeders have developed forage crop cultivars and hybrids that meet all these requirements. This paper reviews the most important characteristics of forage crop cultivars and hybrids that were registered by the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Water Management of Republic of Serbia in the course of 2004 and 2005. Those are the alfalfa cultivar Danka, with improved quality, a high-yielding red clover cultivar Una, a forage sorghum hybrid NS Čiker intended for producing high quality silage, and the winter vetch cultivar Neoplanta, which combines high green forage productivity and excellent resistance to low temperature. Two alfalfa cultivars, Banat VS and NS-Alfa are in the final round of official testing. Two spring fodder pea cultivars Jezero and Javor, were released in the Ukraine in 2005.
AB  - Oplemenjivanje krmnih biljaka u Naučnom institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo ima za cilj stvaranje visokoprinosnihi sorti i hibrida. Osim toga od naročitog je značaja da novostvorene sorte i hibridi poseduju zadovoljavajući kvalitet (hemijsko-tehnološke osobine) kao i poželjne morfološko-biološke karakteristike (bokorenje, regeneracija, prezimljavanje, otpornost na bolesti i štetočine). Zahvaljujući dugogodišnjem oplemenjivačkom radu i bogatoj genetičkoj kolekciji u Institut su stvorene sorte i hibridi krmnih biljaka koje u potpunosti zadovoljavaju navedene zahteve. U radu su izneta najvažnija svojstva sorti i hibrida krmnih biljaka priznatih od strane Ministarstva za poljoprivredu, šumarstvo i vodoprivredu Republike Srbije u 2004 i 2005. godini: sorta lucerke (Danka), poboljšanog kvaliteta; visokoprinosna sorta crvene deteline (Una); hibrid krmnog sirka (NS Čiker) namenjen za spravljanje kvalitetne silaže i sorta ozime grahorice (Neoplanta), koja se osim visokog prinosa zelene mase odlikuje izuzetno dobrom otpornošću na niske temperature. Takođe, treba napomenuti da se dve sorte lucerke (Banat VS i NS-Alfa) nalaze u završnoj fazi priznavanja. Pored navedenog u Ukrajini su 2005 godine priznate dve sorte jarog stočnog graška: Jezero i Javor.

AB  - Work on red clover (Trifolium pratense L) breeding at the Forage Crops Department of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad began in the mid-1990s. The main task of breeding red clover, the second most important perennial forage legume, is to develop cultivars that produce high forage yields. Besides the breeding for the main forage yield components special attention has been paid to increasing the protein content and developing genotypes tolerant of low temperatures, lodging and major diseases in economic terms. Our work thus far on red clover breeding using mass (phenotypic recurrent) selection has resulted in the release of two cultivars - Kolubara (2000) and Una (2004 god). More recently, work on red clover hybridization has begun as well.
AB  - Rad na oplemenjivanju crvene deteline (Trifolium pratense L) u Zavodu za krmno bilje Naučnog instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu započeo je 90-tih godina XX veka. Glavni zadatak u oplemenjivanju crvene deteline druge po značaju višegodišnje krmne leguminoze je stvaranje sorti koje daju visok prinos krme. Pored oplemenjivanja na glavne komponente prinosa krme posebna pažnja je posvećena povećanju sadržaja proteina, kao i stvaranju tolerantnih genotipova na niske temperature, poleganje i ekonomski-značajnije bolesti. Kao rezultat dosadašnjeg rada na oplemenjivanju crvene deteline primenom masovne, odnosno fenotipske rekurentne selekcije do sada su priznate dve sorte: Kolubara (2000 god) i Una (2004 god). U skorije vreme započet je rad na hibridizaciji crvene deteline.

AB  - In 2002 and 2003, four cms lines (S-8 682, P-58 626, SS-1 662, SS-1 664) and two R lines (ES and 42) of sweet sorghum were studied for general combining ability for dry matter content in stem juice and plant height.Combining ability was tested by the line x tester analysis. Regarding the cms lines the best combiner for dry matter content in stem juice was P-58 626 in both years. The best combiner for plant height was SS-1 662, again in both years. Regarding the R lines, the line ES was superior in both characteristics and in both years. The crosses S-8 682 x ES and S-8 682 x 42 showed highly significant SCA values for dry matter content in stem juice in first and second year, respectively. The highest SCA values for plant height in the respective years were shown by the crosses P-58 626 x ES and SS-1 664 x 42. Regarding the expression of dry matter content in stem juice, testers had a higher contribution in first year and lines in the second. Regarding the expression of plant height, lines had a higher contribution in the first year and testers in the second.
AB  - Ispitivane su opšte kombinacione sposobnosti za četiri cms (S-8 682, P-58 626, SS-1 662, SS-1 664) i dve R linije (ES i 42) za sadržaj suve materije u soku isceđenom iz stabljike i visine biljke sirka šećerca u 2002. i 2003 godini. Kombinacione sposobnosti su ispitivane primenom analize linija x tester. Između četiri cms linije najbolji kombinator za sadržaj suve materije u isceđenom soku iz stabljike u obe godine ispitivanja bila je linija P-58 626. Za visinu biljke u obe godine najbolji kombinator je bila linija SS-1 662. Medu R linijama, za oba svojstva u obe godine ispitivanja bolji kombinator je bila linija ES. Ukrštanje S-8 682 x ES u prvoj, a ukrštanje S-8 682 x 42 u drugoj godini ispitivanja ispoljila su visoko signifikantne vrednosti PKS za svojstvo sadržaj suve materije u soku isceđenom iz stabljike. Za visinu biljke najvišu vrednost PKS u prvoj godini ispitivanja ispoljilo je ukrštanje P-58 626 x ES, a u drugoj godini ukrštanje SS-1 664 x 42. U ekspresiji sadržaja suve materije u soku isceđenom iz stabljike u prvoj godini veći doprinos imali su testeri, a u drugoj linije. Kod visine biljke u prvoj godini veći doprinos u ekspresiji svojstva imale su linije, a u drugoj testeri.

Kombinacione sposobnosti su ispitivane primenom analize linija x tester. Između četiri cms linije najbolji kombinator za sadržaj suve materije u isceđenom soku iz stabljike u obe godine ispitivanja bila je linija P-58 626. AB  - Red clover (Trifolium pratense L) is botanically a perennial, although it often behaves as a biennial. The crop generally survives for 2 to 3 seasons in most clover-growing regions of the world, and is considered to lack persistence. The objective of this investigation was to analyse the production potential, persistence and quality characteristics of domestic and imported red clover varieties, with a view to subsequent inclusion in breeding programs. Experiments were conducted at the Rimski Sancevi Experiment Field Station during 2001-2002. AB  - Breeding of both winter and spring common vetch and creation of new cultivars are based upon a rather wide variability of morphological traits within the species of Picia sativa L. A three-year (2002-2004) small-plot trial was conducted at the Institute's Experiment Field at Rimski Sancevi. It included five spring vetch cultivars of different origin: Novi Beograd from Serbia and Montenegro, Slavej frorn the FYR of Macedonia, Serva-174 from Spain, Tazza from Germany and RCAT066401 from Hungary. The greatest plant height was found in RCAT066401 (120 cm), while the smallest plant height was found in Serva-174 (79 cm) and Tazza (77 cm). Number of stems per plant ranged from 1.3 in Slavej to 3.3 in Serva-174, while number of internodes ranged from 13.1 in Tazza to 19.0 in Novi Beograd and 20.1 in RCAT066401. RCAT066401 had the largest plant mass (43.83 g), while Tazza had the smallest plant mass (23.92 g). RCAT066401 also had the highest yield of fresh weight (33.0 t ha(-1)), closely followed by Novi Beograd (31.8 t ha(-1)) and Slavej (31.0 t ha(-1)). Due to the highest proportion of dry matter, Slavej and Novi Beograd had the highest yield of hay (8.6 t ha(-1) and 8.3 t ha(-1)).

AB  - Yield components of six alfalfa cultivars were analyzed for genetic variability in the early stages of plant development during years two through four of plant life (1999-2001). The following traits were studied during the first five stages of development: plant height, leaf contribution, dry matter content of stem and leaves, and internode number and length. Genetic and phenotypic variance was estimated as well as the coefficient of variation and broad sense heritability. Genetic and phenotypic variability of yield components in alfalfa cultivars is significant in the earlier developmental stages, which enables selection before pollination and fertilization (Tab. 1). The cultivars NS Banat ZMS II and NS Mediana ZMS V had significantly taller plants, a higher dry matter content and higher internode number. However, higher leaf contribution to yield was found in Slavija, Novosadjanka H-11 and NS Bačka ZMS I (Tab. 2).
AB  - Proučavano je 6 sorti lucerke, kreacije Instituta za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo od druge do četvrte godine života biljaka (1999-2001). Varijabilnost je ocenjena u prvih pet fenoloških faza razvića. Analizirane su: visina biljaka, udeo lišća, sadržaj suve materije u stablu, lišću i ukupno, broj internodija i dužina internodija. Izračunata je genetička i fenotipska varijansa koeficijent varijacije i heritabilnost. Dobijene su značajne razlike u morfološkim osobinama između domaćih sorti lucerke u mladim fazama razvića. Varijabilnost morfoloških osobina lucerke, mogla bi se koristiti kao kriterijum za ocenu genotipova u oplemenjivanju, u mlađim fazama razvića, odnosno pre generativne faze.

Javor had the higher plant height mean values (42 cm), pod number (5) and plant mass (5.93 g), while Jezero had the higher grain number per plant (14) grain yield per plant (2.31 g) and 1000-grain mass (171 g). Jezero had the higher average grain yield per unit area (1.272 t ha-1) relative to Javor (0.962 t ha-1).

Režim navodnjavanja u 2002. godini je obuhvatio sedam zalivanja sa ukupnom normom od 220 mm, a tokom 2003. godine šest zalivanja sa ukupnom normom od 130 mm. Žetva u obe godine je obavljena krajem avgusta. AB  - Yield of irrigated forage sorghum has been analyzed in order to determine the threshold of optimum soil moisture and the effect of irrigation in dependence of sowing method. The highest yield of forage (95.74 t/ha) was achieved with the preirrigation moisture of 70-75% of field water capacity (FWC). Therefore, this value is the threshold of optimum soil moisture for forage sorghum. The average yield for rainfed sorghum was 65.79 t/ha, and thus the irrigation effect was 45%. The sowing in rows 25 cm apart brought the yield of 88.48 t/ha. This yield was significantly higher than that obtained in the row distance of 50 cm, which was 78.59 t/ha. The highest absolute yield of forage of 102.59 t/ha was obtained with the preirrigation moisture of 70-75% FWC and the distance of 25 cm between the rows. In addition to yield of forage, we analyzed the number of plants per unit area number of internodes and stem height shortly before cutting, portions of stems and leaves in yield of forage and the contents of dry matter in stems and leaves.
AB  - Analiziran je prinos zelene krme sirka u uslovima navodnjavanja u cilju utvrđivanja donje granice optimalne vlažnosti zemljišta i efekta navodnjavanja pri različitom načinu setve. Najveći prinos zelene krme (95,74 t/ha) ostvaren je pri predzalivnoj vlagi 70-75% od PVK, stoga ova vrednost predstavlja donju granicu optimalne vlažnosti zemljišta za krmni sirak. Prosečan prinos u uslovima bez navodnjavanja iznosio je 65,79 t/ha, a efekat navodnjavanja bio je 45%. Setvom krmnog sirka na međuredno rastojanje od 25 cm ostvaren je prinos od 88,48 t/ha, značajno više u odnosu na setvu na 50 cm, gde je prinos iznosio 78,59 t/ha. Apsolutno najveći prinos zelene krme od 102,59 t/ha ostvaren je navodnjavanjem pri 70-75% PVK i setvom na 25 cm međurednog rastojanja.

Ns varieties of fodder crops: Seed production and quality

AB  - We have analyzed the 1999-2002 seed production of the Novi Sad varieties of alfalfa, field pea and vetch that predominate the commercial production in the Vojvodina Province. The average alfalfa yield of 260 kg/ha was at the level of the long-term average, but the annual variations were large, from 100 to 362 kg (Table 2). The highest yield was achieved in 2002 with the variety NS-Banat ZMS 11. 675 kg/ha. High values were registered for the major quality indicators. The average seed purity was 99-6%, with small annual variations from 99.4% to 99.8% (Table 3). Further to the point, the largest portion of admixtures was made up of inert matter (0.3%), while weed seeds could be found only in traces (0.1%). Depending on the weather conditions of the year of production, seed viability ranged from 83% to 86%. The average contents of atypical seedlings and hard seeds were low, 6.8% and 4.5%, respectively. The mass of 1000 seeds was 2.1 g, with the average moisture content of 7.3%. Depending on the purpose of production, field pea seed yields varied between 1601 kg/ha (NS-Pionir) and 3131 kg/ha (Javor) (Table 4). The analyzed period had unfavorable ecological conditions for vetch production, which resulted in low yields, from 1271 kg/ha (NS-Sirmium) to 1550 kg/ha (Beograd) (Table 5). Field pea seed purity was 99.4%, with 0.6% of inert matter and no seed admixtures of other crops or weeds. Vetch seed purity was 98.9% (98.3 - 99.3%). The largest portion of admixtures was inert matter (0.8%), while seed of other crops made 0.3%. Weed seeds were not present. The values for seed viability of field pea and vetch were 90.3% and 933%, respectively, with small variations due to ecological conditions (Table 6).
AB  - Analizirana je proizvodnja semena najzastupljenijih novosadskih sorti lucerke, stočnog graška i grahorice u Vojvodini tokom četvorogodišnjeg perioda (1999 2002). Prinos semena lucerke bio je na nivou višegodišnjeg proseka 260 kg/ha, uz značajno variranje između godina ispitivanja (100-362 kg). Najveći prinos ostvaren je sortom NS-Banat ZMS II (675 kg/ha) u 2002. godini. Utvrđene su vrlo visoke vrednosti značajnih pokazatelja kvaliteta semena. Prosečna čistoća semena iznosila je 99,6%, sa neznatnim variranjem po godinama od 99,4% do 99,8%. Pri tome, najveći deo primesa činile su inertne materije (0,3%), dok je seme korova bilo prisutno u tragovima (0,1%). U zavisnosti od vremenskih uslova tokom godine, klijavost semena varirala je od 83% do 86%. Sadržaj atipičnih klijanaca i tvrdog semena bio je nizak, prosečno 6,8% i 4,5%. Masa 1000 semena iznosila je 2,1 g, dok je prosečan sadržaj vlage bio 7,3%. U zavisnosti od namene sorte prinos semena stočnog graška kretao se od 1.601 kg/ha (NS-Pionir) do 3.131 kg/ha (Javor). Period 1999-2002 godine odlikovao se pretežno nepovoljnim ekološkim uslovima za proizvodnju semena grahorica što je rezultiralo niskim prinosom semena, od 1.271 kg/lia (NS-Sirmium) do 1.550 kg/ha (Beograd). Čistoća semena stočnog graška iznosila je 99,4%, sa 0,6% inertnih materija bez semena drugih gajenih vrsta i korova. Kod grahorice čistoća semena iznosila je 98,9% (98,3 99,3%). Najveći deo primesa činile su inertne materije 0,8%, 0,3% semena drugih gajenih vrsta, bez semena korova. AB  - Natural alfalfa seed from contracted 1997-2000 production in the Vojvodina province was processed at the Forage Crops Department of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The seed was processed on a Kamas Westrup, while the dodder was removed using a trifoline magnet. Twelve samples were taken from the seed producers in each of the four study years. Each sample was divided into three parts (one for the producer, one for laboratory analysis and one for the processor (The greatest purity was achieved in 2000 (53% on average), followed by 1998 (48%). The year 1997 had a considerably lower purity (42,8%), while 1999 had the lowest (only 34,8%). The smallest amount of processed seed was obtained in 1999 (28,8 t). In the year 2000, which was fairly favorable seed production-wise and had the largest utilization percentage *53,7% of pure seed), a total of 77,5 t was processed. In 1997, five alfalfa cultivars were used seed production, while in 1998, 1999 and 2000 there were three each.
AB  - U radu su iznete proizvedene i dorađene količine semena lucerke (1997-2000) godine i uticaj čistoće naturalnog semena lucerke na randman dorade u zavisnosti od sorti i godine proizvodnje. Randman dorađenog semena lucerke zavisi od prisustva raznih-primesa u naturalnom semenu. Najniži randman semena u četiri godine (%) bio je u 1999 god. 34,8 %. Najbolja čistoća semena i iskorišćenje (%) dobijena je doradom semena u 2000. godini od 53,7%. U toku navedene četiri godine ispitivanja vršene su laboratorijske analize na uzorcima: čistoća, učešće nečistoće, prisustvo inertnih materija i korova izraženo je u procentima (%). Najniža čistoća dorađenog semena (%) u odnosu na naturalno seme pojedinih uzoraka (uzorak 4) je iz 1999. god. od 14,7%, a najviša čistoća (uzorak 12) iz 2000. god. je 90,0 %). Učešće nečistoće u semenu kretalo se od 10,0% (u 2000. g.) do 85,3 % (u 1999. g) Prisustvo inertnih materija 9,0 % (u 2000) do 63,0 % (1997) god., a učešće korova u naturalnom semenu 1,0% (u 2000) do 28% (u 1999) god. Čistoća dorađenog semena, u odnosu na naturalno seme lucerke (%) uslovljena je od zakorovljenosti useva, uspeha primenjene desikacije, podešenosti kombajna pri radu u žetvi i dr.

Mutual relationships among yield components in alfalfa

AB  - Ten alfalfa varieties were tested at the Rimski Šančevi Experiment Field in the period 1991-1994. The following characteristics were analyzed: yield of dry matter, yield of green forage, stem length and diameter, lamina length and width, regeneration rate, number of intemodes, proportion of leaves and the content of crude proteins. Stem length, yield of green forage, regeneration rate and the proportion of leaves exhibited direct positive effects on dry matter yield. Number of internodes, lamina length and the content of crude proteins exhibited negative direct effects. Yield of green forage, stein length and regeneration rate exhibited also indirect positive effects, via other characteristics. They may be used as selection criteria in alfalfa breeding for increased yield of dry matter. AB  - U periodu od 1991-1994. godine ispitivano je 10 sorti lucerke na Rimskim Šančevima. Analizirana su svojstva: prinos suve materije, zelene krme, dužina i prečnik stabljike, dužina i širina liske, brzina regeneracije, broj internodija, udeo lista i sadržaj sirovih proteina. Pozitivne direktne efekte na prinos suve materije lucerke ispoljavaju: dužina stabljike, prinos zelene krme, brzina regeneracije i udeo lista u prinosu. Negativne direktne efekte na prinos suve materije lucerke ispoljavaju: broj internodija, dužina liske i sadržaj sirovih proteina. Prinos zelene krme, dužina stabljike i brzina regeneracije ispoljavaju i pozitivne indirektne efekte preko drugih osobina, pa se mogu koristiti kao kriterijum u selekciji lucerke na veći prinos suve materije. Pored značajnog pozitivnog direktnog efekta, udeo lista ispoljava i negativne indirektne efekte preko prinosa zelene krme, dužine stabljike, brzine odrastanja i sadržaja sirovih proteina i ne bi se mogao koristiti za selekciju lucerke na veći prinos suve materije.

AB  - Alfalfa cultivars developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad can be used in different growing conditions and for different levels of exploitation. Alfalfa grows successfully on deep and fertile soils of neutral reaction. It can also be grown on poorer (slightly acid) soils, provided they have been well fertilized with lime materials and organic fertilizers prior to sowing. The following NS cultivars are suitable for growing on poorer soils: NS Vršac ZMS IV, NS Mediana ZMS V and Novosađanka H 11 (Tab. 1). The paper presents and discusses the basic cultivation measures such as top dressing with mineral nutrients, tillage, sowing, and protection from weeds. (Tab. 2, 3 and 4). It also deals with determining the right moment for alfalfa crop utilization and determining the most suitable phenological phase (Tab. 6) as well as with the adaptedness of alfalfa cultivars to different systems of cutting (five- and four-cutting ones). NS Bačka ZMS I, NS Banat ZMS II, NS Vršac ZMS IV and NS Mediana ZMS V are early cultivars that mature earlier and are better able to withstand the more intensive system of utilization with five cuttings.
AB  - Sorte lucerke stvorene u Institutu za ratarstvo i povrtarstvo u Novom Sadu, pogodne su za različite uslove uspevanja i intenzitet iskorišćavanja. Lucerka se uspešno gaji na dubokim i plodnim zemljištima, neutralne reakcije. Moguće je gajiti lucerku i na slabijim (slabo kiselim) zemljištima, ako se prethodno dobro pođubre krečnim materijalom i organskim đubrivima. Na slabijim zemljištima pogodnije su za gajenje novosadske sorte lucerke: NS Vršac ZMS IV, NS Mediana ZMS V i Novosađanka H 11 (Tab. 1). Prikazane su i razmatrane osnovne mere prihrane mineralnim hranivima, obrade, setve i zaštite od korova (Tab. 2, 3 i 4). Određivanje pravog momenta iskorišćavanja lucerišta i određivanje najpogodnije fenološke faze (Tab. 6). Prilagođenost sorti lucerke za različite sisteme kosidbi (petootkosni i četvorootkosni). Sorte lucerke NS Bačka ZMS I, NS Banat ZMS II, NS Vršac ZMS IV i NS Mediana ZMS V su rane sorte, koje brže stasavaju i bolje podnose intenzivniji petootkosni način iskorišćavanja.
