AB - Sunflower breeding is a continuous process designed to increase yield levels and improve resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Breeders have been successful in producing a large number of varieties using conventional breeding methods that vary by species. The emergence of new techniques, such as genomic selection and genome editing, together with efficient phenotyping platforms, have paved the way for more efficient introduction of desirable traits. New approaches in genotyping and phenotyping have enabled more efficient data collection to identify quantitative traits and explain the genetic basis of agronomically important traits. The creation of sunflower genotypes resistant to climate change can contribute to mitigating the negative impact that agricultural production has on the environment, such as intensive water depletion and greenhouse gas emissions, while on the other hand providing resources for stable agricultural production. The paper provides an overview of new approaches and steps in sunflower breeding and the creation of genotypes tolerant to climate changes, with a review of the activities at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops related to their application in the NS breeding program.

AB - Suncokret je sve više ižložen negativnim uticajima klimatskih promena, posebno visokim
temperaturama i sušnim periodima, što neretko uzrokuje značajne varijacije i smanjenje prinosa
semena.
sprovodi svake godine multilokacijske mikro i proizvodne ogleda širom zemlje, testirajući
adaptabilnost i stabilnost novih i već raširenih hibrida suncokreta u različitim mikroklimatskim
uslovima. Tokom 2023. godine hibridi nove generacije, odnosno dva konvencionalna hibrida (NS
Kruna i NS Ronin) i dva Express (SUMO) hibrida (NS H 8002 i NS H 8005) posejani su u osam
regiona tj. okruga, kod četiri poljoprivredna proizvođača a u svakom okrugu.
hibridi u proseku ostvarili veće prinose u svim okruzima. Ovi rezultati potvrđuju da novosadski
hibridi nove generacije poseduju izuzetnu adaptabilnost, stabilnost, a pored toga i visok
potencijal za prinos u različitim agroekološkim uslovima širom Republike Srbije.

This study aimed to analyze the distribution of targeted bioactive compounds and assess the physical properties across 27 sunflower seed genotypes, including parental lines and F1 and F2 hybrids, cultivated in Serbia. Various analytical techniques were employed to determine the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the seeds. This research revealed significant genetic variability in fatty acid profiles, with differences in polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acid levels among the genotypes. Hybrid seeds displayed variations in 1000-seed weight and bulk density compared to parental lines, which exhibited higher essential fatty acid contents and mechanical properties advantageous for industrial processing. These insights highlight the potential for refining breeding strategies to improve seed quality for specific industrial purposes. Overall, this study emphasizes the critical role of genetic selection in enhancing the nutritional and processing qualities of sunflower seeds, offering valuable perspectives for advancing agricultural and breeding practices.

AB - Sunflower seeds and their oils have been integral to human diets since ancient times, offering a rich source of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial fatty acids. Notably, sunflower seeds contain significant levels of phenolic compounds, including flavonoids and polyphenols, renowned for their nutraceutical properties that promote human health. These compounds exhibit potent antioxidant activity, crucial for combating oxidative stress-related ailments such as premature aging, cardiovascular issues, neurodegenerative disorders, and certain cancers. In this study, we examined the oil, protein and tocopherols contents, as well as the levels of total polyphenols and flavonoids, across 20 different sunflower genotypes to assess the potential of these seeds as a source of valuable natural compounds. The seed's oil percentage was determined using Maran Ultra Resonance NMR, while protein content was assessed via the Dumas method. Total flavonoid content was measured using AlCl3 colorimetry, and polyphenol content was estimated using the Folin-Ciocalteu assay.

AB - Sunflower is a globally important oilseed crop mainly used for oil in human consumption, while secondary products have nutritional value in livestock feed. Neverthless there have been advancements in breeding sunflower genotypes with desirable traits, high yield, and disease resistance, further research is needed to address emerging challenges, such as climate resilience and sustainability. Bearing in mind that sunflower breeding over the last several decades has mainly foucused on biotic and abiotic resilience, sunflower oil content in hybrids has remained at the same level, 40-50%. Considering the trends of climate change, drought tolerance certainly represents an essential trait in breeding programs worldwide. The question arises whether it is time to further orient in sunflower breeding towards increasing oil content, bearing in mind that in light of increasingly frequent dry years. It is very difficult to make progress in seed yield. The aim of our study was to develop sunflower genotypes characterized by drought tolerance and increased oil content (>55%). Initial plant material was selected from a gene pool of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. We used a traditional approach by crossing highly drought tolerant inbred lines characterized by oil content ranging from 50-52%. Genetic material for drought tolerance was selected based on field trials and in vitro drought conditions, over six vegetations (3 vegetations in field conditions and 3 vegetations in in vitro conditions). Oil content was determined using nuclear magnetic resonance analyzer (NMR, Maran Ultra-10). The pedigree method of selection was used to develop new genetic material with desirable traits. As a result, we developed seven inbred lines designated as DO1 to DO7 characterized by high drought tolerance and high oil content ranging from 55.09% to 60.39%. Our results revealed that there is a possibility for significant improvement in sunflower oil content while simultaneously breeding for drought resistant. Further studies will include biotechnological tools in order to identify QTLs associated with drought tolerance and increased oil content and to develop markers associated with traits of interest in order to accelerate the breeding process.

AB - Organic agriculture has to satisfy a growing need for food satety with maintaining
soil fertility and ameliorating climate change effects. NS confectionary hybrids have good
characteristics, uniform color and size and are suitable for machine dehulling. They are used
for production of both large amounts of unrefined cold pressed oil and oilcake. Testing NS
confenctinary hybrids under different production systems (conventional and organic) is
important when breeding for hybrids with a wide degree of adaptability to different
cultivation conditions The specific treatments were analyzed under organic cultivation
condition. The application of the Guanito organic fertilizer at a dose of 0.5t ha-1 applied
during the BBCH 01 stage, the application of Trainer at 3l ha-1 and Natur Plasma at 5l ha-1,
were applied during the BBCH 36 stage. This was compared to a purely conventional
treatment with mixed NPK fertilizer (50:50:50), and a control cultivation in organic
production with no treatment. Five different confenctionary hybrids were analyzed under
above conditions, making for 25 unique test conditions. fatty acids, oil content and tocopherol
in sunflower seed were measured under lab condition. The analysis firstly was performed with
one level ANOVA on both hybrids and different treatments, as well as with two-level
ANOVA. Differences between hybrids were found to be significant in the one-way ANOVA
for 4 different kind offatty acids, and seed oil content. No ignificant was found with one-way
ANOVA test among different treatments. Two-way ANOVA analysis for alpha-tocopherol
has been confirmed the significant differences among tested hybrids., The significant
interaction were detected between both hybrids and treatments for palmytic, stearic and
linoleic content, as well as the significant differences for hybrids is only detected on oleic
content. Due to there is no significant differences was found between different models with
the Akaike Information Criterion, that's why Wilcox’s robust two-way ANOVA analogue was
used with n = 1000 for subsampling. A robust one-way ANOVA analogue was applied using
Wilcox’s algorithm and Welch’s method with 20% trimmed means and 5000 subsampling
steps. Significant results were found for stearic, oleic, linoleic and oil content. Given that
these models have been validated with robust statistics, they were elected as suitable for post
hoc analysis. Preliminary result analysis shows that there are no statistically significant
differences between organic, control and conventional treatments. It detects no significant
differences in tocopherol levels between different hybrids, but the available datashowed the
significant (at a 0.001 level) differences in fatty acid and oil content. Further work should be
developed to study the use of organic fertilizers on NS confenctionary hybrids so as to creat
the organic growth conditions for sunflower.

AB - The leaf area index (LAI) is one of the most common used indice for describing the above-ground biomass of crops, which is useful for understanding the complex roles of different factors on affecting the leaf development. The photosynthetic capacity of the sunflower plant is defined, by the leaf area index as well as the dynamics of its change during the vegetation period, whereas, photosynthesis is directly responsible for the accumulation of nutrients and yields. The goal of the research was to analyze LAI differences in s intercropping systems between sunflower and legume. A four-year trial (2017-2020) was conducted in Serbia’s agroecological conditions using a split-plot design. Two oil-type and one confectionary-type hybrid were intercropped with common vetch, red clover, and alfalfa. LAI was obtained using one direct and two indirect methods. The threshold for correlation coefficient indicating the statistical significance of the correlation in a matrix (critical r-value) for a probability of 95% (α 0.05) is 0.576, and for 99% probability (α 0.001) is 0.708.

AB - Charcoal rot, caused by Macrophomina phaseolina, is a soil-borne plant pathogen,
and presents a significant threat to sunflower cultivation, impacting regions across the globe,
particularly under drought stress. This disease can substantially decrease sunflower seed
yields, with yield reductions of around 20% potentially reaching up to 90% in severe cases.
Limited information about the inheritance of charcoal rot resistance is available to sunflower
breeders. To study the inheritance of charcoal rot disease resistance in sunflower. We
developed two distinct populations of totaling 200 genotypes from the F2 generation of
sunflowers for genetic and molecular screening. The first population originated from crossing
inbred lines AB OR 8 and PB 21, while the second is from crossing VL A 8 PR and AB OR
8. Notably, AB OR 8 is classified as a highly susceptible line, whereas PB 21 and VL A 8 PR
were resistant. The segregation ratio was investigated in F3 populations using the cut-stem
method of inoculation. Based on the obtained data, it was determined that the resistance to M.
phaseolina in sunflower does not correspond to the theoretical segregation pattern, indicating
the presence of more than two genes involved in inheritance of resistance. For the analysis of
resistance QTLs, we exploited SSR markers that were equally distributed throughout the
sunflower genome. The majority of significantly associated SSR resistance markers were not
common to the two mapping populations, except for two, OR S995 and ORS1265, which
displayed consistent efficacy across both populations, suggesting their potential as robust
indicators. Future research should explore these markers further, as well as include more
markers, particularly in larger population samples, to validate their utility comprehensively

AB - Although flower pollinator interactions are known to be mediated by floral traits, not enough attention has been paid to the research of secretory tissues and volatile components of sunflower disc florets as potentially important parameters in breeding programs. (1) To our knowledge, this is the first integrated study aimed at better understanding the attractiveness of sunflower capitula to insects. In the study, we have made a very detailed comparative analysis of secretory tissues and the characterization of the volatile components (VOCs) of disc florets in 10 wild perennial Helianthus species. (2) For anatomical analyses, cross-sections were obtained from the nectary zone of disc florets using a cryotechnique procedure. Micromorphological observation and morphological and anatomical analysis of disc florets were performed using light and scanning electron microscopy. For VOCs, we applied headspace, GC-FID, and GC/MS analyses. (3) The obtained results indicate that there is a difference between the analyzed traits among studied species. H. eggertii, H. hirsutus, H. mollis, H. resinosus, and H. tuberosus had high disc diameter values, a high cross-section area and disc floret corolla length, as well as the largest cross-section area and thickness of the disc florets nectary. In the analyzed VOCs, 30 different compounds were detected. The highest yield and quantity of α-Pinene was observed in H. mollis. (4) Inflorescence features, such as receptacle diameter, corolla and secretory tissue properties, and floret VOCs production and characterization, provided valuable information that can be used as guidelines in sunflower breeding programs to maximize pollinator attractiveness and increase seed yield.

AB - Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) breeding for biotic and abiotic challenges is a dynamic and multidisciplinary process that requires ongoing research and adaptation to evolving agricultural and environmental conditions. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability and productivity of sunflower crop worldwide, as an important source of edible oil for human consumption. Sunflower is host for large number of pathogenic microorganism that can cause a significant reduction in yield such as Plasmopara halstedii, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Verticillium dahliae, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium spp. etc. Another important biotic threat on sunflower is certainly the parasitic plant broomrape (Orobanche cumana) which is one of the most important breeding topic worldwide. Breeding process typically combines traditional breeding methods and modern biotechnological tools to enhance the efficiency and precision of the breeding process. It is aimed to identify and incorporate genes or traits associated with resistance or tolerance to certain biotic stress and utilize molecular markers linked to genes associated with. Abiotic stress tolerance involves selection and development of genotypes that can withstand and thrive in unfavourable environmental conditions such as drought, salinity, high temperatures, etc. In that regard, effective sunflower breeding is aimed at combining phenotypic data with genotypic information for more effective selection via utilizing advanced phenotyping technologies to accurately assess plant performance under different stress conditions. In addition, work on increasing and maintaining the existing genetic diversity in sunflower gene banks is essential for long-term resilience against evolving biotic and abiotic stresses.

AB - Macrophomina phaseolina, the causative agent of charcoal rot, affects a wide array of plant hosts, including sunflower. This disease thrives in warm, arid conditions, leading to symptoms such as the wilting, drying, and premature ripening of sunflower plants. This study aims to explore the biochemical responses of 15 inbred lines, each exhibiting varying levels of resistance, to uncover potential correlations between resistance levels and biochemical reactions in sunflower inbred lines. The investigation focused on: total protein content (TPC), lipid peroxidation intensity as a marker of membrane integrity (LP), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide-dismutase activity (SOD), and total phenolic content as antioxidant compounds (TP). These parameters were assessed 10 days following the laboratory inoculation of inbred lines with the pathogen and compared with disease severity. Correlations between resistance levels and the results of these five assays were analyzed in conjunction with disease severity observed in the inbred lines. Remarkably, after the 10-day assessment period, only the total phenolic content showed a significant positive correlation with the resistance of inbred lines (r=0.712; p<0.05). This finding identified inbred lines PB 21 and L 1 as the most resilient among the tested varieties. It was observed that different inbred lines exhibit distinct responses to M. phaseolina. However, in the majority of cases, an increase in total phenolic content was noted in sunflower plants following inoculation. This suggests a potential defensive mechanism triggered by the pathogen. Further studies can analyze more precisely into the molecular intricacies of sunflower resistance to charcoal rot and validate these findings across broader genetic backgrounds.

AB - Sunflower is the third largest oil crop and in 2023 it was grown on over 28 million hectares in the world. With the discovery of the CMS source in 1969, sunflower hybrids began to be created. The first commercial hybrids based on CMS were registered in Romania, in 1974 and in Yugoslavia, in 1978. It is estimated that hybrids are grown on around 85% of the total sunflower planting area today, and the remaining 15% are still landrace varieties, mostly of the confectionery type. Therefore, the requirement for hybrid sunflower seeds in the world today is around 120 million kg (about 12 million bags of 150,000 grains). To reach to this amount, the sunflower will be with an average yield of 700 kg/ha of processed seeds, it is necessary to plant sunflower with area about 170,000 ha. The total commercial hybrid sunflower seed production is estimated at USD 2 billion today. The production of hybrid sunflower seeds today is exposed to many new challenges. Global climate change facilitate warming environmentally, thus make drought and stormy winds occurrence. By monitoring the daily dynamics of bee visits, we determined that the maximum number of visits occurs at air temperatures between 20 and 28℃, and air humidity of 40-50%. In recent years, the average temperature in Serbia has increased by nearly 2℃ compared to the multi-year average. This has a negative effect on the vitality of pollen and fertilization, as well as on the visit of bees, so the recommendations for supplying beehives have increased from 2 to 4/ha. Bees are the most important pollinators for sunflower and on average make up 71% of the total visit (in some years over 90%), the insects is mainly from the Syrfidae family (19% of visits), bumblebees (8%) and butterflies (2%), whose populations are constantly decreasing. Due to the increase in the sunflower planting area, it is increasingly difficult to ensure spatial isolation of insects, it decreases to 500 m in many countries, and this already leads to increased foreign fertilization and the spread of wild sunflowers, which is especially dangerous if they carry some of the genes for resistance to herbicides. In the last 20 years, many herbicides, insecticides and fungicides have lost their registration, especially in Europe. Seed treatment makes sunflower production especially difficult, as well as the international trade of seeds, because the situation differs among different countries. With the announced cancellation of the license for Reglone desiccant, the situation is further aggravated and higher costs can be expected (primarily due to drying), but also a significantly drop in yield and seed quality. The potential substitutes techniques we tried to create (Kabuki, carfentrazone, pelargonic acid, glyphosate...) did not have good results. Problems with high fluctuations in mercantile prices and the increased price of energy and fertilizers, with a lack of labor and especially with the war in Ukraine, leads the restrictions on seed trade in Russia, significantly affect the sunflower production, thus leading to an increasing risk on the price of sunflower seeds in the future.

AB - Broomrape (Orobanche cumana) is a continuous threat to sunflower production.
Awidely used method to control this parasitic plant is the development of resistant hybrids.
The control method itself requires knowledge of parasite virulence present in the particular
region. Virulence determination is based on the reaction of differential sunflower genotypes
and several genotypes are in use by researchers to determine broomrape race labeled with
capital Latin letters. In Serbia, broomrape is present in some sunflower planting regions.
Recently, researched limited number of broomrape populations indicated a sparse presence of
race F. In this research over 200 sunflower fields were surveyed for the presence of the
parasites. Broomrape plants were collected, air dried and labeled. Parasite virulence was
determined using inbred lines AD-66, LC1002, LC1003, LC1093, NR5, and P96, to identify
race type based on the reaction of sunflower to broomrape. Experiments were conducted in
semi- controlled greenhouse conditions by growing differential lines in pots containing
substrate with broomrape seeds. Reaction of each line was determined based on broomrape
presence on the host root. Broomrape was found in 88 sunflower fields. In majority of
surveyed fields, parasite was found sparsely ranging from few individuals to small patches of
infested sunflower plants. Results have confirmed the presence of race F based on the
susceptibility of line NR5 and the presence of race G based on the susceptibility of line P96.
Further research will include increased number of genotypes to assess variability in
broomrape virulence and experiments for genetic diversity determination of parasitic
populations of various geographical origin.

AB - Broomrape (Orobanche cumana) is one of the most important constraints for
sunflower croping. Parasite populations are segregating on virulence criterion and different
races are described. Breeding efforts directed for development of resistant genotypes face
challenges such as genetically diverse broomrape populations and broomrape of different
virulence. One strategy to minimize the impact of broomrape virulence variability in breeding
for resistance is to test sunflower genotypes resistance with broomrape with different origins.
In this study, a selection of 24 IFVCNS inbred lines based on resistance to dominant
broomrape populations in Serbia was tested to broomrape race F, collected in a sunflower
field of Andalusia region in Spain. Six-week greenhouse pot experiments were conducted in
CSIC, Spain. The line B117, used as susceptible control, had broomrape on all tested plants.
For 13 genotypes no broomrape was present on roots, 10 genotypes had broomrape attached
on part of tested plants, and broomrape incidence on one genotype was 100%. Inbred lines
were analyzed on the basis of genetic background and importance in breeding. In the group of
AB-OR lines, with origins from Helianthus divaricarus, 7 out of 9 lines were completely
resistant. Inbred line HA-267, with a single recessive mode of resistance inheritance, was
confirmed resistant. Inbred lines, RUB-3 and SOL-SU-26 were also completely resistant to
broomrape. The results indicate the importance of using different broomrape populations and
conducting multi-location experiments to enhance the breeding process together with using
various sources of resistance. Selection of resistance genotypes will be further tested for their
resistance to broomrape populations and resilience to adverse enviromental conditions.

Na posetu utiču sadržaj nektara, količina i kvalitet polena, dužina krunice, boja cveta i drugi faktori atraktivnosti, ali je veći uticaj faktora spoljašnje sredine i primenjenih agrotehničkih mera.
AB - The sunflower is an entomophilous plant, and the presence of pollinators is necessary for successful seed production. The influence of fertilization conditions on yield elements was examined. In open pollination, the seed yield per head was on average 72.13% higher for 12 genotypes in 2 years of testing compared to self-fertilization conditions, the weight of 1000 seeds was 10.08% lower and the oil content was almost 6% higher. Fertilization conditions significantly affect the oil content, which is confirmed by Spearman's coefficient of correlation of genotype ranks by oil content in two types of fertilization, which is very low (Scer = 0.1119). The visit is influenced by the content of nectar, the quantity and quality of pollen, the length of the corolla, the color of the flower and other factors of attractiveness, but the factors of the external environment and applied agrotechnical measures have a greater influence.

The visit is influenced by the content of nectar, the quantity and quality of pollen, the length of the corolla, the color of the flower and other factors of attractiveness, but the factors of the external environment and applied agrotechnical measures have a greater influence.",

AB - Evaluating the qualities of sunflower hybrids is partially based on laboratory analysis which is amenable to strict quantification and statistical and computer analysis. However, the insignificant amount of information is not gleaned from direct visual observation which is partially qualitative and where it is quantitative, it is laborious and prone to human error. To remedy this state of affairs, we have begun work on an automated, AI-powered analysis workflow for visual confectionary sunflower seed evaluation. We foresee that these advances can be used both to increase efficiency of dehulling via model machine and helping to generate novel varieties with novel seed shapes. This advancement should be possible by combining automated shape analysis, genomic analysis, and the development of generative AI models which create plausible simulations of seed geometry under known genetic and environmental conditions. In this paper we address the first step of 3D shape analysis: 3D shape acquisition. Traditional 3D shape acquisition techniques require relatively expensive equipment, consisting of multiple carefully calibrated cameras. To reduce cost and guarantee the potential for ubiquity of this approach, we propose an alternative approach based on cheap image acquisition technology and AI-powered 3D geometry reconstruction.

AB - Crop breeding is a continuous process aimed at increasing yields and improving crop resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recently, frequent and often unpredictable variations in climatic and market conditions have led to the fact that classical breeding methods cannot always provide solutions and a timely response to new challenges in agricultural production. With all this in mind, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) established the Centre of Excellence for Innovations in the Breeding of Climate-tolerant Plants - Climate Crops with the aim of introducing and applying new breeding techniques (NBT), along with efficient phenotyping platforms in crop breeding programs in IFVCNS. It is expected that the activities within Climate Crops will have a positive impact on the excellence and innovative capacities of IFVCNS in the field of breeding plants tolerant to the extreme weather conditions that occur as a result of climate change.

AB - U Srbiji se visokoproteinski konzumni hibridi suncokreta proizvode u manjem obimu u konvencionalnim i organskim uslovima proizvodnje, uz stalno povećanje površina pod organskom proizvodnjom.
AB - In Serbia, high protein confectionery sunflower hybrids are produced on a smaller scale both in conventional and organic production systems, with constant increase of area under organic production. Large seeds are used in a number of natural health products, as well as for direct consumption, while smaller seed fractions are used in the production of cold-pressed sunflower seed oil. Analysed the effect of organic fertilizer Guanito (T1), 0.5 t ha-1, was performed at the stage BBCH 01, while treatments with Trainer (T2), 3 l ha-1 and Natur Plasma (T3), 5 l ha-1, were carried out at the stage BBCH 36. on seed oleic acid and oil content of NS confectionary sunflower hybrids and compare them with untreated control (C) in organic production and with mixed NPK fertilizer (50:50:50) treatment as control (K) in conventional production. All organic fertilizers hadnot positive effect on oleic acid and oil content compared to control. Organic fertilizers did not affect the increase in oleic acid and oil content compared to the control. The hybrids differed statistically significantly of seed oleic acid and oil content. No interaction was observed between treatment and oleic acid and oil content, nor any statistically significant interaction between treatment and hybrid. NS confectionery hybrids can be successfully grown in conventional and organic production conditions, which is confirmed by the research results, there were no statistically significant differences between oleic acid and oil contentin in the control in organic and conventional growing conditions.

AB - The increased use of vegetable proteins in the food industry has imposed new goals on the confectionery sunflower breeding program. Testing the adaptability of new NS confectionery sunflower hybrids is an important part of the breeding program. Fifteen NS confectionery sunflower hybrids were tested over a period of three years in an experiment set up as a randomized block design with three replications at the Rimski Šančevi location. The REML random model was used to evaluate the effects of hybrid, year, and their interaction, while AMMI analysis was applied to determine the interaction between genotype (G) and environment (E). The effect of G, E, and their interaction (GE) was compared with respect to their contribution to the total variance. For seed yield, the main effect of E (49.32%) is more important than the GE effect (38.98%) and G effect (11.70%), which shows that sunflower seed yield, of investigated hybrids, depends more on environmental conditions than on genotype.

AB - Broomrape (Orobanche spp.) is a widespread, herbaceous, parasitic plant that has been known to attack various host plants, including sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). It is native to regions in Europe and Asia, and it co-evolved with various host plants and with the expansion of agriculture and the movement of crops around the world, broomrape was unintentionally transported to new areas. Newer studies reports about sunflower broomrape detection in African countries such as Tunisia and Morroco. After the discovery of broomrape infestations on sunflower, various control and management strategies have been developed to combat its spread which includes crop rotation, use of resistant sunflower genotypes, herbicide use and other cultural practices aimed at reducing the prevalence of broomrape. Since it appereance on sunflower in the beggining of the 20th Century and development of resistant sunflower varieties, broomrape control was mostly focused on using resistant genotypes with monogenic inheritance. With the expansion of resistant sunflower genotypes in the production, existential pressure on broomrape led to the emergence of more virulent physiological races. Broomrape races are designated with letters, from A to H, and until the middle of 1990s broomrape race E was predominant in the most countries were broomrape was present and was successfully controlled by resistant gene Or5. However, studies from the last several years indicate disimilarities between broomrape populations with the same letter (above race E) reported in different countries. Newer molecular studies are focused on detecting quantitative trait loci (QTLs) which may act at different development stages of broomrape, providing accumulative resistance mechanisms in order to ensure more durable protection.
Despite efforts to control broomrape, it remains a persistent problem in sunflower cultivation in certain regions. New strains of broomrape may emerge, making control measures an ongoing challenge for breeders and farmers. Research and development efforts are ongoing to find more effective and sustainable ways to manage this parasitic plant and protect sunflower crop.

AB - The presence of various biotypes of broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.), each differing in their virulence towards sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), has been widely documented. Highly virulent races of broomrape (F, G and H) have been observed in numerous sunflower cultivation regions. It is important to note that biotypes of O. cumana belonging to the same race can exhibit varying levels of virulence; for instance, race F from Spain may differ significantly from race F in Romania. In light of these variations, conducting systematic multi-environmental testing on available germplasm becomes crucial for identifying stable genetic sources of resistance. The IFVCNS has organized multi-environmental testing to evaluate its breeding material, identifying several resistance genes. Some resistance sources are governed by major genes, while others follow recessive inheritance or exhibit quantitative trait loci (QTL) resistance. Managing broomrape in sunflower production poses challenges due to the parasite's ability to adapt and overcome existing resistance mechanisms. Climate change is considered as a potential factor behind the rapid changes in the racial composition of the parasite. Although resistance to O. cumana is frequently breached, utilizing multiple resistance sources is crucial in combating the emergence of new races. While resistance based on a single gene can be easily transferred to elite breeding material and prove effective in the short term, achieving durable resistance necessitates the combination of different resistance genes from diverse sources, including both quantitative and qualitative modes of resistance. Consequently, the incorporation of multiple resistance genes into a single genotype has demonstrated improved resistance durability. Moreover, it is essential to ensure that these genes do not have adverse effects on other desired traits. By capitalizing on the strengths of durable resistance approach, the breeding team at IFVCNS has successfully developed sunflower hybrids with enhanced broomrape resistance and increased sustainability. These advances contribute to sunflower production systems' long-term success and stability, ultimately mitigating the challenges posed by broomrape and changing climatic conditions.

AB - Sunflower broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) is a holoparasitic plant that causes significat yield losses to sunflower crops. Hence, the development of broomrape-resistant hybrids is one of the prime breeding objectives. Using conventional plant breeding methods, resistance genes have been identified which led to the development of a number of resistant hybrids, adapted to different growing regions worldwide. However, while there are many studies on genetic of resistance to broomrape in sunflower, the molecular tools that are available for research on O. cumana are very scarce. Recent advances in sunflower genomics pawed the way for application of modern breeding tools in broomrape breeding and find durable solutions for limiting broomrape spread and virulence. Here we present an overview of those new tools, such as phenotyping, -omics, and genome editing techniques, which need to be introduced into the sunflower breeding programs in order to achieve durable resistance to this parasitic plant.

AB - According to the current trend of world population growth, expectations are that the total number of inhabitants will reach 9.6 billion by 2050, which is an increase of more than 10% compared to the current situation. In addition, the average global temperature is rising and setting records every year, accompanied by abnormal climate phenomena such as supercell storms. In addition to numerous biotic factors that create problems in growing crops, record temperatures and unpredictable rainfall present increasingly challenging conditions for successful production. At the global level, sunflower represents a strategic field crop specie, due to the increasing demand for its oil, as well as relatively moderate production requirements, compared to other crops. Bearing in mind the above facts, it is essential to apply innovative techniques in sunflower breeding in order to develop genotypes capable of resisting the challenges of biotic and abiotic stress such as various pests, diseases, high temperatures, drought, etc. In this regard, some of the current trends in plant breeding, including sunflower, are precise gene modification within the genome (CRISPR-Cas9), digitized breeding based on a large data set with the application of bioinformatics for genomic prediction, as well as precise phenotyping and the application of epigenetics for the purpose of breeding for tolerance to abiotic factors caused by frequent climate changes (climate resilient varieties). One of such approaches is the SMARTSUN project of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad, which, using modern methods of precise phenotyping along with genotypic and epigenetic research, examines the mechanisms of adaptation of sunflower to extreme abiotic factors, primarily drought, as an increasingly frequent phenomenon caused by climatic irregularities.

AB - Confectionary sunflower breeding is characterized by different markets having different demands for seed size, hull color, and other traits, thus making this process more difficult and costly. Large seed fractions are purchased, roasted, and packed individually, while smaller seed fractions are used in the production of cold-pressed sunflower seed oil and oil cake. The processing industry, that is, small factories, buy large seed fractions for backing and packaging. To understand the contribution of genotypes, years, and their interaction to the variability of traits, REML random model was used to estimate the variance components of factors for each trait. The effect of genotypes (G), environments (E), and their interaction (GE) was compared by considering their contribution to the total variance for kernel and shell ratio, seed length, width, and thickness.
