Mamlić i sar.

AB - Pea (Pisum sativum L.) yield is dependent on many factors, both environmental and genetic. In the light of the ongoing climate change, the variation and control of traits affecting productivity are within a special interest. We examined the heritability and variation of ovule number together with the correlation of this trait with seed number per pod, thousand seed mass, and seeds/ovules ratio. A set of pea accessions was grown in field and glasshouse conditions. Calculations were carried out either in living plants or in the course of seed harvesting. The heritability of ovule number evaluated via analysis of F1 and F2 hybrid populations was found relatively low, ca. 0.5. It was found that under drought and heat the resulting yield decreases not only due to the production of fewer seeds per pod but also the initiation of fewer ovules. Differential and heritable ability to reproduce ovule numbers under stress may be a guide for breeding peas adapted to changed climate.

Unequal stability of diferent parts in the fag blossom (Leguminosae) with notes on factors afecting variability of pentamerous pentacyclic angiosperm fowers

AB - Angiosperm flowers are subject to spontaneous fluctuations in their structure, so in the same individual plant normal and anomalous flowers may coexist. While extra or missing organs usually do not affect the efficiency of pollination in poly-symmetric flowers, such meristic changes may impair the interaction between floral parts in monosymmetric flowers, like in Leguminosae. This work aims to investigate the range of meristic changes in pentamerous pentacyclic flowers of Leguminosae (fag blossoms) and several other eudicot families. Both leguminous and non-leguminous flowers exhibit similar ranges of variation affecting one or several floral whorls, either adjacent or not. The most variable part of the flower is the androecium. In the papilionoid corolla, the most stable part is the adaxial petal (fag), while the most variable feature is the presence or absence of the inner adaxial (vexillary) stamen. This observation agrees with the fact that all petals except for adaxial, as well as vexillary stamen, are recurrently reduced in different leguminous lineages. Among factors potentially contributing to the floral stability, the most significant is inflorescence structure, as highly ramified cymose inflorescences exhibit a wider range of meristic changes in flowers.

abstract = "Angiosperm flowers are subject to spontaneous fluctuations in their structure, so in the same individual plant normal and anomalous flowers may coexist. Among factors potentially contributing to the floral stability, the most significant is inflorescence structure, as highly ramified cymose inflorescences exhibit a wider range of meristic changes in flowers.",

AB - The seed yield in pea (Pisum sativum L.) depends on numerous environmental and genotypic factors. The ongoing climate changes draw one’s attention to genetics and variation of underexplored reproductive traits. This study focuses on ovule number (ON) and flower size expressed as a length of flag petal (FL), in terms of their heritability, variability, and correlation with 1000 seed mass (TSM), seed number per pod, and seed/ovule ratio. A set of pea accessions was planted over several years in field conditions. Some of these accessions were also grown in a glasshouse. The chosen values were scored on living plants or while harvesting seeds. Nonparametric statistical methods were applied. Heritability of ON and FL was studied in five hybrid F1/F2 combinations. We found a relatively low (ca. 0.5) broad sense heritability of both ON and FL. Among other traits, TSM and ON reproduced best over the years. FL exhibited no reproducible correlations with other traits and cannot be used as a predictor of productivity. Water deficit and heat stress reduce seed yield in pea due to both seed abortion and development of fewer ovules. The differential and heritable ability to retain ON may become a basis for breeding pea cultivars adapted to changing climate.

AB - Various regulatory genes encoding transcription factors and miRNAs regulate carpel number. Multicarpelly is normally associated with increased size of the floral meristem, and several genetic factors have been discovered that influence this characteristic. A fundamental understanding of the regulatory genes affecting carpel number can facilitate strategies for agricultural yield improvement, which is crucial, given that the global population is growing rapidly. A multicarpellate plant may provide a significantly higher yield than a plant bearing fewer carpels. Higher yields can be achieved via various means; in this review, we provide an overview of the current knowledge of the various regulatory factors that contribute to multicarpelly and the potential of increasing carpel number to achieve an increased yield.

AB - The improvement of pea as a crop over many decades has been employing the use of mutants. Several hundreds of different mutations are known in pea (Pisum sativum subsp. sativum), some of which are valuable for breeding. Breeding strategies may be diverse in different countries depending on different obstacles. In Russia, numerous spontaneous and induced mutations have been implemented in breeding. To our knowledge some of these, are not used in pea breeding beyond Russia. This review describes the use of mutations in pea breeding in Russia. The paper provides examples of cultivars created on the basis of mutations affecting the development of seeds (def), inflorescence (det, deh), compound leaves (af, af unitac), and symbiotic nitrogen fixation (various alleles of Sym and Nod loci). Novel mutations which are potentially promising for breeding are currently being investigated. Together with numerous cultivars of dry and fodder pea carrying commonly known mutations, new ‘chameleon’ and ‘lupinoid’ morphotypes, both double mutants, are under study. A cultivar Triumph which increases the effectiveness of interactions with beneficial soil microbes, was bred in Russia for the first time in the history of legume breeding.

AB - The third largest angiosperm family, Leguminosae, is remarkable with the outstanding diversity of its flowers, usually monosymmetric and adapted to different pollination strategies. A key attractant of leguminous flowers is nectar. Compared with Arabidopsis (Brassicaceae), very little is known about regulation of floral nectaries development in legumes. This work aimed to investigate details of these nectaries’ morphology in flowers of mutants of different legume species. It was found that the changes in identity of petals and stamens usually do not affect a proper structure and position of nectaries in leguminous flowers, thus suggesting a high stability of attracting structures versus the pronounced plasticity of perianth and stamens. Some of genes involved in regulation of nectary development in Arabidopsis seem to have the same functions in legumes. The principal difference between Arabidopsis and legumes is connected with a flower monosymmetry in most representatives of the latter taxon, which is also reflected in structure of their floral nectaries.

AB - The vast majority of highly valuable species of the Leguminosae in temperate latitudes belong to the Inverted Repeat-Lacking Clade (IRLC). Despite having a generally conserved monosymmetric floral morphology, members of this group are remarkable with a pronounced diversity of floral sizes, modes of staminal fusion, and pollination strategies. This paper examined androecia and floral nectaries (FNs) in selected genera of the IRLC. External morphology was investigated using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In some cases, the pattern of staminal fusion was additionally examined in transverse sections using light microscopy. Androecia of all selected genera fell into one of four types, viz., monadelphous, pseudomonadelphous, diadelphous or diadelphous reduced (with inner stamens converted into sterile staminodes). However, there was significant variation in the stamens’ mode of contact, as well as the shape and size of the fenestrae providing access to FNs. Some types seemed to arise independently in different genera, thus providing a high level of homoplasy. FNs were more conserved and comprised areas of secretory stomata in the abaxial part of the receptacle and/or hypanthium. Nectariferous stomata could be found in very miniaturized flowers (Medicago lupulina) and could even accompany monadelphy (Galega). This indicates that preferential self-pollination may nevertheless require visitation by insects.

Spatial orientation of gynoecium in legumes and beyond: Commentary to the paper of Wang et al. (2021)

AB - The third largest angiosperm family, Leguminosae, exhibits a relatively wide range of variation in morphology of gynoecium. Some of gynoecial patterns found in this taxon are of special interest, as they resemble ones previously described in the earliest angiosperms. The different orientations of carpels in legumes appear easily switchable through changes in flower symmetry and floral meristem sizes. Regardless of orientation of a single carpel with respect to the inflorescence axis, the placenta-bearing suture invariably remains adaxial as related to the floral axis. This conclusion relaxes the existing controversies between the supposed megasporo-phyll-derived nature of the carpel and observed diversity of placentation in known Mesozoic angiosperms.

The duration of the life cycle is associated with C-value and affects reproductive features in the Fabeae, the tribe with largest genomes in Fabaceae

AB - The amount of DNA per nucleus, usually expressed in terms of the amount within a haploid chromosome set (C-value), is known to have significant impacts on morphological and physiological features in plants. Among these features, C-value influences replication time and hence duration of the whole cell cycle, as well as sizes of cells. The Fabeae tribe of the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae) is remarkable in having both annual and perennial species and the largest C-values in the family. Polyploidy is rare in this tribe. This work aims to study the correlation between annuality/perenniality, C-value and some morphological characteristics of reproductive organs, such as the number of pollen grains, ovules, flowers per inflorescence as well as pollen and flower size, in annual and perennial species within the tribe Fabeae (Vicieae). The average C-value of perennials is statistically significantly higher than of annuals. Compared with perennials, annuals are mostly characterized by single- or few-flowered inflorescences and fewer ovules per carpel independently of flower size. All floral characteristics exhibit a range of intraspecific variation thus complicating the estimation of precise impact of C-value on phenotype. Features of the reproductive system in the Fabeae are therefore partly correlated with C-value, most probably mediated through the interaction between ecological adaptation of species with their life cycle duration.

AB - The contemporary evolutionary developmental biology includes molecular phylogeny, studies on morphology and morphogenesis, genetics, and genomics. The most reliable conclusions about main trends of floral evolution can result from investigations of highly polymorphic group, which is precisely characterized from the positions of both modern systematics and molecular developmental biology. The legume family, Leguminosae, is a group of such kind. It demonstrates an outstanding variation in flower structure. The ancestral floral structure in this family includes monosymmetry, pentacycly, pentamerous perianth and androecium, and a monomerous gynoecium. However, distinct evolutionary lineages resulted in origin of polysymmetric perianth, different patterns of staminal reduction or polymerization, as well as multicarpellate gynoecium. A strikingly high level of homoplasy is found in Leguminosae. Besides the existing evolutionary tendency to stabilize floral structure, the exact “instability syndrome” evolved repeatedly, associated with a polysymmetry and characterized with a highly variable number and position of floral organs.

Seed propagation in four perennial species of Astragalus (Leguminosae, Papilionoideae, Galegeae): productivity, non-random seed abortion and germination rate

AB - The largest angiosperm genus Astragalus exhibits a wide range of morphological variation regarding flowers, inflorescences and especially pods. As a result, some of its species are widely distributed, while others are local endemics and often threatened. It is of significant interest to trace features which provide a higher success for some species under conditions, where their relatives are depressed. Four perennial species of Astragalus from central Russia served as models for this comparative survey, viz. A. cicer, A. glycyphyllos, A. arenarius, and A. danicus. The two former species are widely distributed and rarely included into the regional Red Lists, while the two latter are comparatively rare and considered endangered in several regions. Only a relatively small fraction of ovules develops into fully mature seeds in all four species. Basing on the results of comparative study, it was hypothesised that the main sources of prosperity are a high potential productivity (measured as a number of ovules per seasonal shoot) and pronounced seed dormancy, typically physical. A number of produced ovules is substantially dependent on synflorescence morphology. The feature common for all examined species of Astragalus and distinguishing of the whole genus is an unusual biseriate arrangement of ovules in an ovary, which is probably adaptive for many-seeded fruits exhibiting non-random seed abortion.

The correct statistical analysis provides a possibility to draw adequate conclusions and make results of different researches comparable. When analyzing papers published in ‘Zernobobovye i Krupyanye Kul’tury’ (‘Legumes and Groat Crops’), we found several frequent errors in statistical analysis. Among them, one may list use of parametric methods (such as Pearson’s correlation coefficient or Student’s t-test) without preliminary evaluation of distribution of variables, ineffective choice of ‘most typical’ value (mean instead of median), use of means without illustrating the amount of variation, demonstrating the results of statistical analysis without estimates of their statistical significance etc. Some of analytical procedures were exemplified by own data from phenotyping of germplasm collection of a garden pea. An algorithm was also proposed which may reduce the risk of incorrect use of statistical methods.

AB - The largest genus of the diverse angiosperm family Lythraceae, Cuphea, is remarkable in having floral hexamery associated with monosymmetry. Although some aspects of floral morphology in Cuphea have been investigated to date, we examined floral ontogeny in two species of this genus in comparison with Lythrum salicaria, a member of the same family with hexamerous polysymmetric flowers. Scanning electron microscopy was applied to observe both floral development and morphology. In all three species, calyx initiates first, then the primordia of the outer stamens appear more or less simultaneously with the gynoecium, then the inner stamens and the corolla is the last to initiate. In the apetalous C. ignea, we found no signs of petal initiation. Flowers of L. salicaria can be either hexa- or pentamerous, sometimes with irregular merism, and they are less stable than those of Cuphea spp. in this respect. We classified two features of monosymmetry in Cuphea as ‘early’, viz. absence of initiation of the dorsalmost outer stamen and asynchronous initiation of carpels. The other features of floral monosymmetry in Cuphea appear later, these are unequal development of carpels, the adaxial position of disc, the monosymmetric placenta, and the unequal level of staminal insertion as well as the distribution of indumentum. The presence of (putative) secretory stomata on the disc confirms the hypothesis of its role as nectary. Our results evidence for the non-phyllome origin of the epicalyx in Lythraceae.

AB - A significant diversity of flower structure in angiosperms is defined by few parameters, among which one may list floral merism and symmetry as the most important. However, observation of normal variation in different taxa indicates that high floral merism (more than six organs) is very rarely associated with a monosymmetry. Precise mechanisms underlying this tendency, as well as the mode of interaction between regulatory pathways of floral symmetry and merism, remain unidentified. In this work, we observed the floral ontogeny in normal plants of Lupinus angustifolius L. (Leguminosae), described the floral structure and its variations in fasciated mutant. Our results suggest that monosymmetry is regulated independently from the floral merism, so three types of petals differentiate properly even in flowers with an anomalously high number of organs. However, the adaxial floral domain is the most stable floral part, which is the least susceptible to the fluctuations of merism. This means that some genes responsible for the development of the adaxial flower domain may additionally stabilize it and hence prevent fluctuations of merism in the adaxial domain. The monosymmetry in Leguminosae is a character connected with pollination by insects and requires a precise interaction between all floral parts. That is why fluctuations, which impair this interaction and symmetry, may decrease the pollination efficiency.

AB - Many plant species exhibit chirality or handedness, that is, some morphological peculiarities may be expressed in either of two ways, which mirror each other. Among such traits, one may list asymmetry of leaf blade, clock- or counterclockwise spiral arrangement of leaves along a shoot as well as spiral arrangement or perianth in bud, deflection of a style to the right or to the left (enantiostyly). Here we review the existing data on molecular mechanisms underlying handedness in plants. Almost all these data were acquired through studies on Arabidopsis thaliana, a cruciferous plant, which normally lacks chiral features. These studies uncovered a set of mutations, which cause anomalous spiral twisting of stems, roots, leaf petioles, or floral parts. Generally, three interacting molecular sources of such transformations occur: (i) (i), (ii)or (a), (b) etc. alterations in cytoskeleton content, structure, or associated proteins; (ii) impairing in cell wall biosynthesis; and (iii) changes in auxin polar transport. However, none of these mechanisms has been shown to be responsible for the switch between right and left forms of naturally occurring handedness. Data on inheritance of such handedness are scattered. In some plants, like Medicago truncatula, a single Mendelian gene defines right- and left-handed pod coiling. Some plants are monomorphic with respect to handedness (e.g., all right), but many species exhibit a 1:1 ratio either in population or within a single plant body, evidencing for non-heritable nature of chirality. Some external factors like X-ray irradiation, gravitation, or nutritional regime may influence the choice between two chiral forms.

The study on epidermal features of petals indicates that monosymmetry in Etaballia (and probably Inocarpus) results from insufficient cell expansion in all petals rather than from homeosis. Petals become ribbon-shaped because of deficient (or absent) cellular divisions towards the lateral edges.

AB - Until recently, chemical derivatives of platinum group metals have not been in a systematic direct contact with living organisms. The situation has changed dramatically due to anthropogenic activity, which has led to significant redistribution of these metals in the biosphere. Millions of modern cars are equipped with automotive catalytic converters, which contain rhodium, palladium and platinum as active elements. Everyday usage of catalytic technologies promotes the propagation of catalyst components in the environment. Nevertheless, we still have not accumulated profound information on possible ecotoxic effects of these metal pollutants. In this study, we report a case of an extraordinarily rapid development of lethal toxicity of a rhodium (III) salt in the terrestrial plants Pisum sativum, Lupinus angustifolius and Cucumis sativus. The growth stage, at which the exposure occurred, had a crucial impact on the toxicity manifestation: at earlier stages, RhCl3 killed the plants within 24 h. In contrast, the salt was relatively low-toxic in human fibroblasts. We also address phytotoxicity of other common metal pollutants, such as palladium, iron, nickel and copper, together with their cytotoxicity. None of the tested compounds exhibited phytotoxic effects comparable with that of RhCl3. These results evidence the crucial deficiency in our knowledge on environmental dangers of newly widespread metal pollutants.

Having been the most important legume of this territory for millennia, this plant left its traces in local and personal names, proverbs and idioms. Some of these pieces of folklore may help to reconstruct the phenotype of peas cultivated in the old Russia.
