AB - The aim of study was to investigate development of perennial medicinal plant, Satureja montana L., cultivated in dry farming conditions of South Banat, Serbia, with use of black permeable mulch film. In the first two vegetations, the influence of fertilization and crop density on yields of the aboveground plant part (per plant and per m2) and on the content of total essential oil and its major constituents was observed. Overwintering survival, after late performed first harvest, and surviving ratio by the end of the second year of vegetation were 90.1% and 86.9%, respectively. Ratio between fresh and dry biomass (2.4:1) was not affected by tested treatments. The yield per plant was affected by the treatments only in the second year; in lower compared to higher crop density it was 25% higher, and in organic compared to mineral fertilization it was 19 % higher. In both years, crop density did not show significant effect on yield per unit area, while in case of fertilization, this yield was higher in organic fertilization compared to mineral in the first and the second year, 7% and 19%, respectively. The essential oil yields ranged from 0.8% to 0.9%, with the major constituent thymol (48.3-69.4%), followed by carvacrol, p-cymene and β-bisabolene. The essential oil yield did not depend on treatments, while the content of major constituents was significantly affected only by applied crop density. .

AB - Field trial with yellow gentian was established (11.1 plants per m2) at 1004 m.a.s.l., in order to assess the effect of black PE (bPE), silver PE (sPE), and black permeable biodegradable (bPB) mulching films on the root yield and development during six years. The highest crop density measured prior to the root harvest (sixth year), was obtained in the plot with bPB film (84%), while in the plot with bPE and in control (without mulch) number of plants was reduced by 34.2% and 45%, respectively. In addition, application of the bPB film proved to be the most effective treatment; in the fifth and sixth year root yields per m2 increased by 92.3% and 106.0%, respectively, in comparison to bPE, and by 78.9% and 69.2%, respectively, in comparison to sPE, and by 184.4% and 169.6%, respectively, in comparison to control. Application of bPE had a lower positive effect on YG root yield than control (-18.6%-54.95%), whereas the effect of sPE was higher than the bPE and control; the achieved root yields were higher, 29.7% and 70.6%, respectively.

AB - This paper presents growing possibilities of oily and medicinal plant - black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), and defines agro-technical standards for this. Use of seed and black cumin oil in the world is increasing. With regard to this, the goal of this study was to establish technical procedure for cultivation of this, less commonly cultivated species in Serbia. Investigation was carried out during 2013- 2015., at the experimental field of the Institute for Medicinal Plant Research 'Dr Josif Pančić', in Pančevo, Serbia. For the experimental purposes, domesticated population of black cumin was used. Following three planting dates- Early (half of March), Middle (half of April), and Late (half of May), and three row spacings - 25, 50 and 75 cm, has been tested. The obtained results document that the average length of the entire vegetation period was ca. 120 days, thought which the plants passes 13 different phenology phases (five vegetative and eight reproductive), for the first time described for agro-ecological conditions of Serbia. Influence of individual and combined effects of different sowing dates and row spacings on morphology and yields of dry and ripe black cumin seeds were recorded. Individually, the highest yields were obtained in the treatment with sowing date mid-April in combination with the row spacing of 50 cm, averagelly 752 kg*ha-1. Good achievments in cultivation are very important with regard to so precious properties of black cumin seeds. With defined appropiate growing technology, Serbian farmers will be able to continuously provide this raw materials with consistent quantity and quality, intended for application in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
U ispitivanjima korišćena su tri roka setve (rani - polovina marta, srednji - polovina aprila i kasni - polovina maja) i tri međuredna rastojanja (25, 50 i 75 cm).

AB - In this paper were studied the morphological characteristics, productivity and tuber quality of the Jerusalem artichoke grown in different soil types. The study was conducted on soils of different texture and agrochemical properties: humoglay (the locality: Ivanovo 1), alluvium (the locality: Ivanovo 2) and chernozem on loess and partially gleyed soil (the locality: Starcevo). Prior to the experiment setting, the agrochemical analyses of the soil were conducted, and the mechanical composition was determined. Field experiments were carried out in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Of the total number of observed indicators, in six was recorded significant variability: average tuber weight (AWT), number of tubers per plant (NTP), fresh tuber: yield per plant (FTYP), average depth of excavation (ADE), total sugar content (TS) and alpha-amino-N (alpha AN), whereas in the other six, there were no statistically significant variations. In this group, there are the following indications: tuber length (TL), potassium (K), sodium (Na), total nitrate (TN), calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P). Tuber colour (TC) and tuber shape (TSh) are presented descriptively. According to the examined parameters, the best soil type was the chernozem one with signs gleyzation in loess.

AB - This paper examines the influence of agro-ecological conditions and plantation periods on the occurrence of planting dates of flower stalks, offering fresh and dried valerian root. The aim of this paper is to solve one of the technological unknowns in primary production of valerian roots, where one group of manufacturers base their production on fall plantation, whereas the other group applies spring plantation. The experiments were established in a randomized block design with four replications in the period of tree years from 2013 to 2015, on the soil of marshy black type. The medicinal plant species of valerian (variety 'Vojvodinian') was used, as the plant material planted in autumn and spring. In the first year of experiment there was a significantly lower number of flower stalks than in the second year. The number of flower stalks were lower when planting was done in spring. Primary reasons for such results were a shorter vegetation period and a larger number of warm days. The higher yield of fresh roots was realized in the first year (2013) due to the lower number of flower stalks, better distribution and larger amounts of rainfall. Overall, twice the yield of fresh valerian roots was recorded in the autumn plantation (14.91 kg ha-1) compared to the spring plantation (6.72 kg ha-1). The result of our research has confirmed some of the benefits of establishing an autumn crop of valerian. Obtained roots with rhizomes from autumn planting dates were bigger and brighter compared to those from spring planting dates.

AB - This paper presents different quality parameters of the seeds of three cultivated medicinal plant species investigated: marshmallow (Althaea officinalis L.), flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) and fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum L.). For determination of agronomic and Pharmacopoeial parameters, different aged seeds, collected during six year period (2008 - 2013), were used. Flax seeds (Lini semen) and fenugreek seeds (Trigonellae foenugraeci semen) are considered as official herbal drugs, but not the marshmallow seeds (Althaeae semen). Following agronomic seed quality parameters were determined: germination energy, total germination, 1000-seed weight, and swelling index. The highest average germination parameters was recorded with fenugreek seed (EC = 97.7 % and UK = 97.8 %), quite lower were in flax seeds (EC = 75.2 % and UK = 80.7 %), while the lowest were in marshmallow seeds (EC = 8.1% and UK = 19.8%). 1000-seed weight of the flax and fenugreek were in agreement with previous research. The greatest average swelling index was achieved in flax seeds (6.5 ml), being higher by 38.5% in comparison to prescribed minimum (4 ml), while the average swelling index of fenugreek seeds was 6.2 ml, also exceeding the prescribed minimum, but slightly (6 ml). The average swelling index for marshmallow seeds was 5.4 ml. Although the Althaeae semen is not an officinal herbal drug, a six-year data on the swelling index of the seeds can be used as reference values in the further definition of a new Pharmacopoeial standard for this herbal drug.
AB - U radu su istraživani različiti pokazatelji kvaliteta semena tri gajene lekovite bilje vrste, belog sleza (Althaea officinalis L.), uljanog lana (Linum usitatissimum L.) i piskavice (Trigonella foenum graecum L.). Seme lana (Lini semen) i piskavice (Trigonellae foenugraeci semen) predstavljaju oficijalne droge, dok seme belog sleza (Althaeae semen) to nije. U proseku najveću klijavost imalo je seme piskavice (EK=97,7% i UK=97,8%), nešto manju seme uljanog lana (EK=75,2% i UK=80,7%), a najmanju seme belog sleza (EK=8,1% i UK=19,8%).

AB - The content of some heavy metals (Pb, Cr, Ni and Cr) was monitored in the leaf, flower head and stem of four Feverfew populations (Tanacetum parthenium) grown in two models of crop establishment (spring and autumn), in South Banat, on chernozem. Concentrations of Ni and Cr in the analyzed plant material were at common level for plant material (bellow 5μg g-1). Concentration of Pb in the most plant organs was bellow MPC, except for one case of increased content (5,9-7,8μg g-1) registered in leaves of population TP10. Variability of Cd concentration (0,2-0,6μg g-1) in different plant organs gives reason to suppose that in Feverfew plants there is an increased potential for accumulation of this heavy metal. Mutual differences between tested populations were observed only in Cd content, while there were no significant differences in the content of Pb, Ni and Cr. Model of crop establishment did not have significant influence on concentrations of tested heavy metals in Feverfew populations.

AB - The following soil types were identified on the mountains Suvobor, Maljen and Povlen in West Serbia, which are the natural sites of yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea L.): dystric brown soil on the neutral and basic eruptives and eutric siliceous coiluvial deposit (on Maljen) with the lithic contact at the depth of 40 - 70 cm. The soils are more or less skeletal and the fraction of fine soil has a light textural class. In the upper part of the profile, the soils have high total porosity (52 - 67%) and good water permeability (ranging within 10-2 - 10-3 cm/second). The common characteristics of the surface soil on all three mountains are the high percentage of humus (3-8 %), the extremely low percentage of phosphorus (0.4 - 6.4 mg/100 g) and the low to medium percentage of potassium (8.2 - 20.9 mg/100 g). Generally, the reaction of soil pH (H2O) is below 6.5 which is evaluated as favorable for yellow gentian. Due to a high percentage of serpentine in the parent rock, the ratio of exchangeable cations (Ca:Mg = 0.4:1 and K:Mg = 0.02:1) is disturbed. In the soils of Maljen and Suvobor the percentages of Ni (600 - 1900 mg/kg) and Cr (170 - 450 mg/kg) are significantly higher.
U gornjem delu profila zemljišta imaju veliku ukupnu poroznost (52-67%) i dobra vodopropustljivost (u rasponu reda veličina 10-2 - 10-3 cm/sekundi).

abstract = "The following soil types were identified on the mountains Suvobor, Maljen and Povlen in West Serbia, which are the natural sites of yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea L.): dystric brown soil on the neutral and basic eruptives and eutric siliceous coiluvial deposit (on Maljen) with the lithic contact at the depth of 40 - 70 cm. In the soils of Maljen and Suvobor the percentages of Ni (600 - 1900 mg/kg) and Cr (170 - 450 mg/kg) are significantly higher., Nekontrolisana eksploatacija lincure (Gentiana lutea L.) poslednjih godina je ozbiljno ugrozila njen opstanak u gotovo svim zemljama. U gornjem delu profila zemljišta imaju veliku ukupnu poroznost (52-67%) i dobra vodopropustljivost (u rasponu reda veličina 10-2 - 10-3 cm/sekundi). Visok sadržaj humusa (3-8 %), ekstremno nizak sadržaj fosfora (0,4-6,4 mg/100 g) i nizak do osrednji sadržaj kalijuma (8,2-20,9 mg/100 g) zajedniČka je karakteristika površinskog sloja zemljiŠta na sve tri planine. AB - Main chemical and physical characteristics of soil under cultivation was tested during the year 2002., at four localities in South Banat region (Serbia), known for its long tradition of large scale cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP). Following localities under different large scale MAP cultivation were included in soil investigation: Pančevo Bavanište, Gaj, and Dubovac. The obtained results showed that the soils included in investigation were mainly good for medicinal and aromatic plant production in respect to their chemical and physical properties; the content of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni) was lower than maximal tolerant quantity in agricultural soils, while the content of policyclic aromatic carbohydrates (PAH-s) was lt 1mg/kg in all analyzed samples, except for the soil samples from locality Pancevo where it was 3-4 mg/kg.
