AB - NS sunflower hybrids are developed primarily for the Serbian agro-ecological conditions while taking into account the limiting factors of the domestic sunflower production. The 2006 sunflower yields were negatively affected by excessive soil moisture, high groundwater levels, and floods occurring during the optimum period for sowing in nearly all sunflower-growing regions of the country. The increased moisture hampered planting and increased weediness thus negatively affecting the yields. Weather conditions in the latter part of the vegetation period had a favorable effect on sunflower growth and development. Seed and oil yields obtained in a network of small-plot trials varied according to location and cultural practices used. In both of the sunflower regions studied in the paper, the highest seed yields were produced by the hybrids Sremac, NS-H-111 and NS-H-45. The highest oil yields in the trial network were obtained with the hybrids Baca, Pobednik, Olivko and Sumadinac. The hybrids Baca, NS-H-111 and Sremac produced the highest oil yields in the province of Vojvodina, while the hybridsSumadinac, HS-H-111 and Stig did the same in central Serbia. In a two-year study in Vojvodina, the new hybrids Sremac, Sumadinac and Somborac proved their worth by producing higher seed yields than the hybrids commonly used in commercial production. Results of the small-plot trials confirmed the commercial value of the standard hybrids and showed the value of the new ones, which are expected to become the mainstays of sunflower production in the country as they gradually replace the currently predominant hybrids.

AB - Over the four decades of sunflower breeding at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (IFVCNS), significant results have been achieved. In the area of genetic resources, over 7,000 inbred lines originating from genetically divergent materials have been developed and a rich collection of wild species of the genus Helianthus has been assembled. During the past 40 years, sunflower researchers from the IFVCNS have also developed methods and defined directions of sunflower breeding and created models of ideal hybrids for the local and other agroecological conditions. A large number of sunflower hybrids have been developed at the IFVCNS that have dominated the domestic sunflower production in the last 25 years. Internationally, the IFVCNS has released more than 100 of its own sunflower hybrids as well as over 50 joint hybrids developed in collaboration with various foreign companies and organizations. The IFVCNS has done a great deal on collecting maintaining, studying and using the wild species of the genus Helianthus in sunflower breding using interspecific hybridization.. Cytogenetic studies have played an important role in this process. Modern biotechnology methods such as haploid production, protoplast fusion, in vitro screening, embryo culture and others have all been incorporated into the sunflower breeding program of the IFVCNS. Particularly notable has been the development and practical application of molecular markers in breeding for resistance to downy mildew. Breeding for resistance to diseases has been a major part of the Institute s sunflower program. Significant results have been achieved in selection for resistance to downy mildew, Phomopsis, rust, verticillium wilt, black spot and charcoal rot of root and stem. Genes for resistance to these pathogens have been discovered Helianthus in wild species and incorporated into cultivated sunflower genotypes by interspecific hybridization. The development of hybrids resistant to broomrape race E has had an important part in the Novi Sad sunflower breeding program. Great success has been achieved in developing hybrids tolerant of imidazolinone based herbicides. This effort has produced the hybrids RIMI (RIMISOL) and Vitalko. Hybrids tolerant of sulfonyl-urea herbicides should also be developed soon based on wild sunflower species. Significant results have been achieved in developing hybrids with different oil quality as well. In 2005 sunflower hybrids developed either by the IFVCNS alone or jointly with foreign partners were grown on a total of over two million hectares worldwide.
U ovom poslu značajno mesto su imala i citogenetska istraživanja. Korišćenje savremenih metoda biotehnologije (proizvodnja haploida, fuzija protoplasta, in vitro skrining, kultura embriona i dr) je uvedeno u novosadski program oplemenjivanja suncokreta.

AB - In 2004, conditions for sunflower production were highly favorable and high yields were obtained both in trials and large-scale production (2.34 t/ha). In 2005, however, abundant precipitation throughout the growing season and across most of Vojvodina brought about high incidence of sunflower head rot (Sclerotinia), resulting in yield losses in trials as well as large-scale production (1.8 t/ha). In both study years, when growing season precipitation was close to the long-term average, high yields (over 3 t/ha) were obtained with NS hybrids grown in large-scale production, most notably NS-H-111,NS-H-45, Velja, Banaćanin, Bačvanin, Rimi and others. Even in an unfavorable year such as 2005, the new hybrids Sremac, Somborac and Šumadinac produced significantly higher yields in trials in Vojvodina than the standard sunflower hybrids used in large-scale commercial production. In 2007, the results of the study indicate, there is going to be a significant change in the percentage contribution of individual sunflower hybrids to overall large-scale production of this crop in our country.

of the newly developed inbred lines for total seed number per head (TSN) and 100 seed mass (100SM). Th e interdependence between yield components and seed yield (SY) in order to select promising lines to be used subsequently as components of future sunflower hybrids. In the present study, we used seven new divergent (A) cytoplasmically sterile inbred lines obtained by interspecific hybridization, three Rf-restorer lines used as testers, and 21 F1 hybrids developed at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad. The female inbred lines had been developed by interspecific hybridization, while the three male restorer inbreds with good combining abilities were used as testers in the form of fertility restorers. A trial was set up at the Rimski Šančevi Experiment Field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad using a randomized block design with three replications. The mean values and coefficient of correlation (r) as indicators of interdependence between two variables were determined according to Hadživuković (1991). Analysis of combining abilities was done by the line x tester method (Singh and Choudhary, 1976). Significant differences in TSN and 100 SM were found between the A-lines and the Rf-testers and their F1 hybrids. Analysis of combining abilities showed that there were signifi cant differences between the A-lines and Rf-testers in the GCA for both traits under study. Highly significant positive GCA values were found in the A-lines NS-GS-4 and NS-GS-5, while the NS-GS-6 inbred had a highly signifi cant negative value of the GCA for both traits. Among the Rf-testers, highly significant positive GCA values were found in RHA-N-49 for TSN and RHA-RPL-2/1 for 100 SM. Th e highest and highly significant positive SCA value for both traits was recorded
in the hybrid NS-GS-5 x RHA-R-PL-2/1. Th e nonadditive component of genetic variance had the main role in the inheritance of TSN and 100 SM, further supporting this was the GCA to SCA ratio in the F1 generation of less than one (0.11, 0.24). The largest average contribution in the expression of TSN was found in the Rf-testers (55.8%), whereas with 100 SM, the contribution of the A-lines was more significant (70.6%). Signifi cant positive interdependence was established between SY and TSN (0.376*). Between SY and 100 SM, there was highly significant positive interdependence (0.823**).

AB - A simple link between the expected means of quantitative traits of different generations (progenies) can be established if the mean values are dependant exclusively on additive and dominant gene effects. Th is study aims to prove the correctness of the hypothesis that progeny means depend solely on additive and dominant genes, which can be tested in several ways, one of which is the applied tests. Seven F1 hybrids obtained by crossing five sunflower inbred lines were used to analyze the impact of genes with additive and dominant effects and their interactions on the inheritance of plant height, leaf number per plant and head diameter. Th e linkage among the expected progeny means was tested using the scaling tests method, while the estimates of gene effects and mode of inheritance were made by Generation Mean Analysis. The additive-dominant model proved adequate only for leaf number per plant in crosses C5 and C7. Besides the main gene effects (additive and dominant), epistatic gene effects were also of great importance in the inheritance of all three traits. In the inheritance of plant height, duplicate epistasis between dominant increasers was found in C2 , while C1, C4 and C7 had duplicate epistasis between dominant decreasers. In the case of leaf number per plant, we only found duplicate epistasis between dominant decreasers in C1, C3 and C6, while in the inheritance of head diameter both types of duplicate epistasis were found, namely duplicate epistasis between dominant decreasers in C1 and duplicate epistasis between dominant increasers in C2. It can be concluded that the additive-dominance model was not adequate in explaining the differences between various generation means. In addition to of additive and dominance gene effect, digenic epistatic effects were also found to be important in the inheritance of the characters studied. Therefore, geneticists and breeders working on sunflower should make provisions for the occurrence of epistatic gene effects in their research programs.

AB - Oil yield is a major characteristic of each sunflower hybrid (Škorić et al 2005). To be able to develop new high-oil sunflower hybrids by the method of interspecific hybridization, it is necessary to have information on mode of inheritance and combining abilities of inbred lines used. When selecting prospective lines as components of future hybrids, it is important to know correlations between yield components on one side and oil content on another. Seven new divergent cytoplasmic male sterile lines (A) developed by interspecific hybridization, three Rf-restorer lines used as testers and 21 F1 hybrids have been subjected to the line × tester analysis. Significant differences have been obtained in mean values for all characteristics under study. Significant differences were found between A lines and R lines on one side and their F1 hybrids on the other in oil content, plant height, head diameter, total number of seeds per head, 1000-seed weight and seed yield per plant. The line NS-GS-4 exhibited a highly significant positive GCA value for oil content. The line NS-GS-5 had a highly significant negative GCA value for oil content. The hybrid NS-GS-6 × RHA-R-PL-2/1 had a highly significant positive SCA value for oil content. Non-additive component of genetic variance played the main role in the inheritance of oil content, as indicated by the analysis of variance of combining abilities and the analysis of components of genetic variance. Further confirmation was the ratio GCA/SCA for oil content in the F1 generation which was smaller than unity (0.33). The highest average contribution to the expression of oil content (77.3%) was exhibited by the A lines. Highly significant negative correlations were found between oil content on one side and head diameter, total number of seed per head, 1000-seed weight and seed yield per plant on the other.

AB - Used to evaluate the production characteristics of NS sunflower hybrids were the results from large-scale commercial production and the mean, minimum and maximum values of seed yield, oil yield and seed oil content from the 2002 and 2003 trials. Special analysis was also carried out of the trial results obtained in 2004 in a number of hybrids. Based on the results, the following conclusions were made. The highest seed yield in the three-year trial was obtained using the hybrids NS-H-111, NS-H-43, Velja, Bačvanin and NS-H-45. In 2004, high productivity was recorded in the new hybrids NS-H-2649, Anna-PR and NS-H-1335 K. Of the hybrids grown commercially, the highest seed oil content in the three-year trial was produced by Pobednik, Olivko, Krajišnik Miro and Bačvanin. In 2004, the new Pobednik-2, NS-H-1335 R, NS-H-1335 K and Anna-PR had the highest oil content of the seed. The highest oil yield (kg/ha) in the three-year trial was found in the hybrids NS-H-111, NS-H-43 Bačvanin, Pobednik and Olivko. In the year 2004, the new hybrids Anna-PR NS-H-1335 K and NS-H-2649 stood out in this regard. Excellent results in both commercial production and trials were obtained with the hybrid RIMI and herbicide Pulsar-40. The new CLEARFIELD technology not only controls dominant weeds successfully but provides excellent control of broomrape as well.
AB - Za ocenu produktivnih vrednosti NS hibrida suncokreta korišćeni su rezultati ostvareni u masovnoj proizvodnji. Zatim, srednje i ekstremne vrednosti (min. max) prinosa semena, prinosa ulja i sadržaja ulja u semenu iz ogleda u 2002., 2003- i 2004. godini.

Nova tehnologija "čista njiva" -CLEARFIELD, pored uspešne kontrole dominantnih korova, veoma dobro suzbija i volovod.",

AB - Studied in this paper was the interdependence of six morphophysiological sunflower traits (petiole angle, petiole length, total leaf number per plant, total leaf area per plant, plant height and head diameter) and their correlations with seed yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis was used to gain information on direct and indirect effects of the above characters on seed yield per plant. For most of the traits significant and highly significant correlations were found in the F1 and F2 generations. Plant height and total leaf area per plant had a high positive direct effect on seed yield per plant, while petiole angle and total leaf number per plant had a negative direct effect on the same trait in both generations. Petiole length had a positive and head diameter a negative direct effect on seed yield per plant in the F1 generation, whereas in the F2 generation the two traits behaved the opposite. Path coefficient analysis indicated that plant height, total leaf area, and petiole length were the most important traits for seed yield per plant. Based on the coefficient of determination for the F1 and F2 generations (R2=0.73), it can be concluded that the influence of traits from the study on total variability of seed yield per plant was 73%, while the remaining 27% can be attributed to factors not included in the study.

AB - Significant differences in the mean values of 1000-seed mass were found among the sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) genotypes studied (eight inbred lines and 15 F1 hybrids). The mean value of 1000-seed mass was 46.88 g in the female inbreds, 43.52 g in the restorers and 57.45 g in the F1 hybrids. Heterosis and dominance of the better parent manifested themselves in the inheritance of 1000-seed mass in 12 and three combinations, respectively. The nonadditive component of genetic variance played the main role in the inheritance of this trait. The major portion of nonadditive genetic variance was due to superdominance. The inbred lines were found to have different alleles for 1000-seed mass. Standard deviation and coefficient of variation were used as indicators of variability. The influence of genotype and environmental factors and their interactions on total phenotypic variance was determined by the variance analysis model for a two-factorial trial with year as one of the factors. Analysis of phenotypic variance components showed that genotype had the largest contribution in the expression of the trait in the inbreds (78.9%) as well as in F1 hybrids (73.7%). Analysis of combining abilities by the line x tester method (Singh and Choudhary, 1976) revealed that significantly different GCA effects occurred among the inbred lines studied. Inbred lines and F1 hybrids with positive and negative GCA and SCA effects were identified. The inbred lines HA-22 and RHA-C-B were identified as the best general combiners for this trait, and their hybrid combination (NS-H-59) was the only one with a significantly positive SCA value. The GCA/SCA ratio was less than 1. The GCA/SCA showed that the main portion of total genetic variance was nonadditive in character.

AB - The 1000-seed mass is one of the three most important yield components in sunflower. Using correlation analysis, we studied the interrelationship of several yield components (1000-seed mass, test weight, head diameter, head dry matter mass, percentage seed set, oil content and protein content) in eight sunflower inbred lines and 15 F1 hybrids (line x tester). Path coefficient analysis was used to separate direct and indirect effects of the traits on 1000-seed mass. Highly significant positive correlations were found between 1000-seed mass and head diameter (0.7665) and percentage seed set (0.6026). Highly significant and significant negative correlations were observed between 1000-seed mass and protein content (-0.7065) and 1000-seed mass and test weight (-0.4546), respectively. Oil content had a highly significant positive direct effect on 1000-seed mass, while protein content and test weight had a highly significant negative direct effect on this trait. The coefficient of determination was 0.8302 and the residual factor in path analysis 0.4120.

AB - Increase in seed yield is the main objective of sunflower breeding programs. Genetic variability is the basic prerequisite for each breeding program. Determination and knowledge of genetic variability facilitate the selection of superior genotypes in different generations of selfing. In breeding programs, much effort is expended each year to find superior lines among a large number of tested lines. Genetic divergence has been analyzed in 125 sunflower inbred lines for the following traits: 1) number of florets per plant, 2) number of seeds per plant, 3) percentage of pollination per plant, 4) autofertility and 5) autocompatibility. The selected lines differed in the values of the analyzed traits. Relationships between and within groups of lines were analyzed by a discriminant analysis, which uses mean values of individual plants, and groups of plants and lines. Mahalanobis squared distance served as a measure of similarity. Based on the analyzed traits, it was concluded that 23 inbred lines do not belong to the groups they were allocated in on the basis of the pedigree method of selection. The accuracy of classification varied from 68 to 88%.

AB - Effects of additive and dominant genes and their interactions on the inheritance of seed yield in 10 sunflower hybrids developed by crossing five inbred lines derived from the synthetic NS-S-1 were analyzed in 2001 and 2002. Relationships among the expected mean values of the progenies were checked by the scaling method (Mather, 1949). Gene affects and mode of inheritance were estimated by generation mean analysis (Mather and Jinks, 1982). The additive-dominant model was not adequate for all crosses over the two years. Epistatic gene effects played a dominant role in the inheritance of seed yield in a large number of the crosses. Duplicate epistasis between dominant decreasers and complementary epistasis between dominant increasers were each expressed in a single cross while duplicate epistasis between dominant increasers was expressed in the other crosses. Thus it ensures that sunflower geneticists and breeders should take into account the existence of epistasis in order to facilitate the selection of the method to be used for improvement of a particular trait.

AB - A severe drought lasting from sowing till flowering in almost sunflower-growing regions had a negative effect on yields. The drought hampered sowing, reduced emergence and stand density, and increased weediness bringing about yield losses. Weather conditions in the second half of the growing season favorably affected oil synthesis in the regions of Bačka and Banat. In the region of Srem and central Serbia, on the other hand, the oil content was significantly lower. Yields were quite high in the trials, since care was taken to properly implement the growing technology. The highest average seed yield was recorded in the hybrid NS-H-111, followed by Bačvanin, NS-H-43, Velja, NS-H-45, and so on. The highest seed oil content was found in the experimental hybrids NS-H-1312, NS-H-930, and NS-H-69. Among the hybrids used for large-scale commercial production a high oil content was found in Krajišnik and Miro. The highest average oil yield (kg/ha) was obtained using NS-H-111, followed by NS-H-930, Bačvanin, NS-H 43, and others. The trial results show that the right hybrids have been chosen for large-scale commercial sowings, so they should be used for next year sowing as well (2003).
Suša je omela setvu, umanjila nicanje, dovela do smanjenja sklopa, povećala zakorovljenost, a time i prinos.

AB - Russian breeders made a significant contribution to sunflower breeding by developing highly productive high-oil varietal populations during the 1910-1970 period. With the discovery of the first source of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) in 1969 and the discovery of restorer genes, the development of hybrids began in earnest. Yugoslavia was one of the first countries in the world (alongside France, U.S. and Romania) to start using its own hybrids in large-scale production (in 1978). In the last three decades, significant progress has been made sunflower breeding in Yugoslavia as well as the world. Hybrids with a genetic potential for seed yield of over 5.5 tones/ha and a seed oil content of up to 55% have been developed. Resistance to downy mildew, rust, the sunflower moth, broomrape and was found in the wild sunflower species and subsequently incorporated into the cultivated sunflower. Field resistance to has been achieved in hybrids. The latest generation of hybrids has increased tolerance to white rot (Sclerotinia). Induced mutations have produced genotypes with a high oleic acid content. Spontaneous mutations with recessive genes for beta, gamma and delta tocopherol levels have been discovered as well. These discoveries enable the development of special-purpose hybrids that have oil that is 15-16 times more stable than standard oil. The development of confectionery sunflower hybrids is another important achievement of sunflower breeding. Visible progress has been made in breeding for resistance to herbicides when IMI-resistant hybrids have been developed. In the upcoming period, sunflower breeding will focus on increasing the productivity and stability of hybrids, primarily by using of the wild species as sources of resistance to diseases with the help of new biotechnology methods. On the basis of results from commercial production and a network of trials, the following hybrids are recommended for the 2002 sowing: 1. for regular sowing: NS-H-111, Velja, Krajišnik, Bačvanin, Banaćanin, NS-H-45 and NS-H-43; 2. for late sowing and double cropping: Dukat; 3. for special purposes: Delija (a confectionery hybrid) and Labud (seed for feeding birds and poultry).
