AB - A field experiment was conducted to study the effects of full (F), regulated (RDI), and sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) on yield (Y), evapotranspiration (ET), and water use efficiency (WUE) of drip irrigated soybean. The yield response factor (Ky) was calculated to express the effect of water stress on soybean yield. The water balancing approach was used to schedule irrigation. Daily water used for plants' evapotranspiration was calculated by multiplying reference evapotranspiration with crop coefficients. Irrigation started when readily available water
in the soil layer of 0.4 m was completely depleted by plants. There were statistical differences in yield between F (4.60 t ha−1) and SDI (3.71 t ha−1) treatments, but not between F and RDI (4.44 t ha−1). The evapotranspiration rate varied between 439 and 535 mm under irrigation and between 193 and 306 mm under rainfed conditions. The WUE values were consistent with the yield of the treatments. The statistical difference in soybean yield between F and SDI strategies suggests that the SDI cannot be used in the region's soybean farming. As no water savings were recorded for the same level of soybean yield between F and RDI, it indicates that RDI is not beneficial under the temperate climate of the Vojvodina region. The yield response factors of 0.69 and 0.71 in
2022 and 2023, respectively, show that soybean is tolerant to water stress and could be grown in rainfed conditions in Vojvodina's temperate climate. However, to achieve high and consistent yields, irrigation is advised.

AB - Hemp is considered one of the potential novel crops for human and animal nutrition. This study aimed to determine the complete chemical composition of 29 different varieties of whole hempseeds. Fatty acid composition, amino acid profile, mineral composition, and cannabinoids content were also evaluated. All hempseed varieties were milled to obtain whole hempseed flour. Differences between hempseed varieties were significant (p < 0.05) for all measured parameters. Proximate composition results showed that crude protein and fat contents varied from 21.6–28.9% and 21.1–35.7%, respectively. Fatty acid profiles revealed that the three major fatty acids were linoleic acid (52.79–57.13%) followed by α-linolenic acid (12.62–20.24%), and oleic acid (11.08–17.81%). All essential amino acids were detected in all varieties, with arginine (12.66–17.56 mg/100 g protein) present in abundance, whereas lysine was limiting. Substantial differences were found in the mineral content, and potassium (509.96–1182.65 mg/100 g) and iron (5.06–32.37 mg/100 mg) were the main macroand microminerals found. All cannabinoids were found in small traces and tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC) was only detected in five varieties. To conclude, the nutritional composition of hempseeds with hull makes them suitable to be added into the diets of humans or animals as a highly beneficial novel ingredient.

AB - The purpose of this study was to obtain additional value of hydrolates (HYs), by-products during essential oil distillation. Chemical compositions of angelica and hop hydrolates were determined and compared with the corresponding essential oils, and their biological potential tested. Steam distilled essential oils and hydrolates were analyzed by GC-MS, and their biological potential was tested for antioxidant (DPPH, ABTS and reduction power) and antimicrobial activities (against nine bacteria and fungi). Hydrolates were additionally tested for allelopathic activity (on corn and redroot pigweed). The investigated essential oils have totally different volatile profiles and aromas in comparison to hydrolates. The most dominant constituents in the angelica essential oil were limonene, β-phellandrene, α-pinene, α-phellandrene and δ-3-carene, while in the hydrolate it was trans-verbenol. In the hop essential oil the most dominant constituents were myrcene and α-humulene, while in the hydrolate isovaleric acid and linalool were dominant. Angelica essential oil showed higher antioxidant activity in comparison with hop, while hydrolates displayed significantly lower antioxidant activity. Low antimicrobial potential of both essential oils was observed in the case of Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. Antimicrobial activity was not detected in neither of the two hydrolates. In terms of allelopathic activity, hydrolates showed a dose-dependent decreasing activity on germination and seedling growth of corn and redroot pigweed. Angelica and hop essential oils are mainly used in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries because of their aroma. Hydrolates, as by-products, possess potential for application in agriculture as natural herbicides.

AB - Drip irrigation is gaining increased interest in the production of soybeans. The changing climate causes an increased demand for water sources of good quality. Consequently, the drip irrigation method should be adapted for the rational use of limited water supplies. Introducing deficit irrigation instead of traditional watering rates is imposed as a potential solution to achieve this goal. Therefore, the research examines the possibility of deficit irrigation in soybean production. The experiment was conducted in field conditions during 2022-2023, in the Vojvodina region, the northern part of Serbia, at the experimental field in Bački Petrovac, the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad. The irrigation was scheduled using the water balance method. The irrigation rate was 30 mm in the vegetative and 40 mm in the reproductive stages. Three treatments were investigated: full irrigation of soybean (F), regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) with 20% less irrigation rates in the vegetative stages, and sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) with 20% less irrigation rates through the whole season. The rainfed treatment was also included. No significant yield decrease was found between F and RDI, while the yield reduction was the highest on SDI. The lowest yield was on rainfed treatment. Irrigation and evapotranspiration water use efficiency were similar on F and SDI, while lower values were found on SDI. The yield response factor is below 1, indicating that the soybean is tolerant to water deficit. The average value in the dry year is about 0.68 and in the humid year 0.74 without major variations between F and RDI. Lower values were found on SDI which corresponds to the achieved yields. Based on the data on yield and water use efficiency, it can be concluded that RDI can be recommended in soybean production in climatic conditions of the Vojvodina region.

AB - Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is one of the most intriguing agricultural crops worlwide. The hypothesis of this work was that industrial hemp properties would be affected by cultivar, seeding date, and row spacing effects on fiber and seed yield as measures of optimal production technology for specific hemp production outcomes. Field experiments were conducted in Bački Petrovac, Serbia (45.3568° N, 19.6173° E, at 82 m) during the 2020 and 2021 seasons following a multi-year pilot study. The study included 5 cultivars (Helena, J x USO31, Bob-1, H x USO31, and Marina). The three seeding dates were at the beginnings of April, May, and June, respectively. The three inter-row spacings were 12.5, 25, and 50 cm (4.92, 9.84, and 19.68 in., respectively). The results indicate that the tallest plants were obtained from plots seeded at 12.5 cm. Plants sown at a spacing of 50 cm exhibited a significant increase in stem thickness compared to those planted with a spacing of 12.5 cm. Overall, the fiber content varied between 26 % and 49.7 %. Cultivar Marina had the highest hemp fiber content (HFC) of all cultivars. The highest seed yield was obtained from cvs. H x USO31 and J x USO31, while cv. Marina had the lowest seed yield. Hemp seeds contained on average 88.6 % unsaturated fatty acids and 66.78 % new polyunsaturated fatty acids. Major polyunsaturated fatty acids in hemp oil were linoleic (C18:2 n6), gamma-linoleic (C18: n6) and linolenic (C18:3 n3) acids of which linoleic acid was most abundant, and it ranged from 45.3 % to 54.8 % in the analyzed seeds. The major monounsaturated fatty acid in the hemp seed oil analyzed in this study was oleic acid (an average of 15.09 % for all cultivars, seeding dates, and row spacing combinations). While the findings from this study are immediately applicable to the traditional hemp-production region of Vojvodina in Serbia, they can also be readily utilized by hemp fiber and seed growers at the same latitude across the world who want to improve agronomic sustainability of hemp, as well as for scientific readers all over the world.

AB - This study aimed to examine and compare the main nutritional quality parameters and bioactive compounds of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) grain in order to select genotypes suitable for human consumption and predict genotypes with higher antioxidant capacity. Sorghum grains from the restorer lines collection (172 genotypes) were analysed for their nutritional quality (ash, protein, fat and starch), phenolic compounds content (total phenolics, tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins), as well as for antioxidant activity and colour parameters. The content of the studied items was 1.6–6.6 % for total lipids, 8.7–19.8 % for proteins, 1.2–3.7 % for ash and 57.1–93.3 % for starch. Total phenolics con tent was 0.6–11.3 g·kg-1 (expressed as GAE) in methanolic extracts and 1.1–17.1 g·kg-1 (expressed as GAE) in acetone extracts, while the highest antioxidant activity was 90.4 %. There was no correlation between colour and tannin content. The expected and experimentally obtained antioxidant activity confirmed the effectiveness of artificial neural network as a predictive tool. This study showed that sorghum is a valuable material for developing functional food products and it has potential if cultivated in the European climate.

AB - The present study focused on exploring the chemical composition of essential oil and corresponding hydrolate obtained by steam distillation of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) cultivar “Helena” (low THC content). Chemical characterization of industrial hemp essential oil and hydrolate was performed by gas chromatographic and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, while biological activities included antimicrobial and antioxidant tests. Antimicrobial activity was determined by measuring diameters of the inhibition zone by using a disc-diffusion method with nine microbial strains from ATCC culture. Moreover, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) as well as time-kill kinetic studies, antiadhesion, and antibiofilm formation potential were also evaluated. Antioxidant activity was evaluated through three different antioxidant assays: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS+), and reducing power (RP).

AB - The development of irrigation schedules based on water balance implies a study of daily plant water requirements. A properly selected irrigation method is also of most importance. The objective of this study was to find out how surface drip irrigation (SDI) and shallow subsurface drip irrigation (SSDI), as well as different ET-based irrigation scheduling for maize (reference evapotranspiration (ETo), pan evaporation (Eo), and local climatic coefficients (lc)), affect grain yield, water use efficiency (WUE), and yield response factor (Ky) of maize. The field experiments were conducted in Vojvodina, a northern part of the Republic of Serbia, on the calcareous gleyic chernozem soil, using a complete block design in three replicates in 2019–2021. The water balance method was used for irrigation scheduling. The nonirrigated treatment was used as a control. The yield in irrigation conditions was statistically higher as compared with the nonirrigated control variant. Concerning the tested parameters, especially the maize yield, reference evapotranspiration (ETo) should be recommended as the most acceptable method for assessing maize evapotranspiration. Preference should be given to SSDI compared to SDI because the installation of laterals can be performed together with the sowing, which can ensure the uniform and timely emergence of plants. Based on the Ky coefficient of 0.71, it can be concluded that maize is moderately tolerant to water stress in Vojvodina’s temperate climate. The results can contribute to precise planning and efficient irrigation of maize in the region, implying high and stable yields.

AB - The biological activity (contact and contact-digestive toxicity, repellent and fumigant effects, effect on the insect’s development and life cycle parameters) of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) ethanolic extract was assessed against Plodia interpunctella, the most destructive storage pest of sunflower. Additionally, the study aimed to examine the phytotoxic activity of the extract in order to assess its potential as a sunflower grain protectant. Phytotoxicity assessment was based on the effect on germination energy and seed germination and the activity of antioxidative enzymes, enzymes of the polyphenolic metabolism, and the intensity of lipid peroxidation in sunflower seedlings. The antioxidant capacity and content of phenolic compounds (total phenolics and total tannins) were also measured in seedlings. In the experiments, 70% ethanolic extract of dried flowering buds of industrial hemp (variety Helena) was applied at 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% concentrations directly on sunflower seeds. Ethanol solution (70%) was the control. The hemp extract (1% and 2%) revealed medium repellence for P. interpunctella larvae (L3–4) while at 2% concentration it caused 42.5% larval mortality after 72 h. Moreover, the insect’s development was prolonged and fecundity significantly reduced in hemp treatments. The extract did not exhibit fumigant activity. Germination energy and germination of sunflower seeds were stimulated in treatment with 2% hemp extract, while most biochemical parameters of the seedlings were not significantly affected by the hemp extract.

U ovoj studiji su ispitivani prinosi sorti: prosa (Biserka i Rumenka), heljde (Novosadska), sirka za zrno (Alba i Gold), sirka metlas a (Prima i Reform), konoplje (Helena i Marina), facelije (NS Priora), uljanog lana (NS Primus i NS Marko) i uljane tikve (Olivija i Olinka).

AB - Currently, there are increased interests in growing grain and fiber hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) as well as in large-scale hemp products. Cannabis has been grown/utilized for thousands of years as a fiber, grain, and drug/medicinal plant. However, the strict control of cannabis cultivation to combat illegal use, the spread of new yarns and oilseeds, and the advent of cheap synthetic fibers caused a decreased/eliminated hemp production. Hemp has been banned in most of the world for more than seven decades; it missed out on the Green Revolution and the adoption of new technologies and varieties, creating a knowledge gap. After the 2014 and 2018 Farm Bill in the USA, hemp became legal and the land grand universities launched research programs. The ability to utilize the entire plant for multiple purposes creates opportunity for the market to value hemp products. Hemp production technology varies depending on the type of hemp cultivated (grain, fiber, or cannabinoids), soil characteristics, and environmental factors. Hemp has the potential to be a very sustainable and ecologically benign crop. Hemp roots have a significant potential for absorbing and storing heavy metals such as lead, nickel, cadmium, and other harmful substances. In addition, hemp has been proven to be an excellent carbon trap and biofuel crop. Hemp has the ability to successfully suppress weeds, and it is generally regarded a pesticide-free crop. The purpose of this paper is to examine historic and recent industrial hemp (grain and fiber) literature, with a focus on hemp agronomy and utilization.

AB - Sorghum grain (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is a gluten-free cereal with excellent nutritional value and is a good source of antioxidants, including polyphenols, as well as minerals with proven health benefits. Herein, the phenolic composition, elemental profile, and antioxidant activity of sixteen food-grade sorghum grains (S1–S16) grown under agroecological conditions in Serbia were determined. Nine phenolic compounds characteristic of sorghum grains, such as luteolinidin, 5-methoxyluteolinidin, luteolidin derivative, luteolidin glucoside, apigeninidin, 7-methoxyapigeninidin, apigeninidin glucoside, and cyanidin derivative, were quantified. The antioxidant potential of the analyzed sorghum grains was evaluated by UV/Vis (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy (hydroxyl and ascorbyl radical scavenging assays). The content of macro- and microelements was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission spectroscopy. Theoretical daily intakes of selected major and trace elements were assessed and compared with the Recommended Daily Allowance or Adequate Intake. Sample S8 had the highest amount of phenolic compounds, while S4, S6, and S8 exhibited the strongest antioxidative potential. The sorghum studied could completely satisfy the daily needs of macro- (K, Mg, and P) and microelements (Se, Zn, Fe). Pattern recognition techniques confirmed the discrimination of samples based on phenolic profile and elemental analysis and recognized the main markers responsible for differences between the investigated samples. The reaction between hydroxyl radicals and luteolinidin/apigeninidin was investigated by Density Functional Theory and thermodynamically preferred mechanism was determined.

AB - With the aim of optimizing the buckwheat assortment for the region of Serbia, field trials with 161 accessions of Fagopyrum sp. were set up in Backi Petrovac (45° 20' 12" N, 19° 40' 12" E) during 2023. In addition to 148 F. esculentum var. esculentum accessions, the phenotypic characterization of 30 ‘agromorphological characteristics also includes 7 var. emarginatum as well as 4 F. tataricum, 1. dibotrys and 1 F. ocutatum. Characterization of properties was carried out according to ECPGR Descriptors for buckwheat. The experiment, which was set up on May 10, was marked by extreme conditions that included high rainfall at the end of May, high temperatures at the end of June, storm at the end of July and high temperatures at the beginning of August. Such extreme conditions allowed test collection for tolerance to high temperatures and lodging. Within the analyzed collection, significant phenotypic variability was noted for all selected traits. Some of the traits were strongly affected by the extreme conditions such as high temperatures of over 40 °C during the generative phase of plant development which completely destroyed all accessions except F. esculentum, from which 26 were also significantly damaged. Additionally, a large part of the collection (93 accessions) showed a pronounced sensitivity to lodging and as such are not suitable for mechanized harvesting. Nineteen accessions showed partial lodging and they could be used with partial yield reduction.

AB - In ancient cultures, the female flowers (cones) of hops were used to preserve drinks with a low alcohol content to which they gave a specific aroma. Today, they are used in the brewing, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industry. According to scientific data, hops have a sedative effect, and have a significant anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic potential. The main biologically active ingredients that influence these activities are essential oils, bitter substances (alpha and beta-acids), phytoestrogens and flavonoids (flavonol glycosides, condensed tannins and prenylflavonoids). The essential oil of hops is golden yellow, with a fresh and slightly sharp herbal aroma. The commercial production of essential oils is carried out by distilling the plant mass with water or steam. Since water is the solvent in both processes, these extraction techniques are classified as green technology. After the extraction of essential oils from plant material, hydrolate and solid residues (exhausted plant material) and are obtained as by-products.

AB - Two major cannabinoids are present in Cannabis plants. The first one is a psychoactive cannabinoid substance (-)-trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, well-known as THC, based on which medicinal cannabis is categorized as a prohibited narcotic. The other one is cannabidiol (CBD), presented specifically in hemp. CBD is familiar as a pharmacologically active substance, and its application is becoming increasingly important in medicine. Many studies testify to osmotic treatment’s success in removing water from different plant and other materials. Sugar beet molasses has proven to be an efficient osmotic solution in water removal, nutritional enrichment, food safety and quality aspects. The use of a mild temperature regime to preserve plant tissue and nutritional values is one of this process’s advantages. This work is concerned with determining the effect of the drying temperature on CBD and THC content after the osmotic treatment (OT) compared to the natural drying at ambient temperature.

AB - Quantitative variations in the sex ratio significantly affect the industrial hemp (fiber hemp) cultivation, since the production is closely related to the reproductive biology of the species. Both dioecious and monoecious varieties are cultivated, but only monoecious ones enable simultaneously mechanized harvesting of stalks and grains. 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (Ethrel®) is a synthetic plant growth regulator that affects sex expression and suppresses stem elongation and plant growth. Thus, four various dosages of Ethrel® were applied as foliar sprays to fiber hemp plants cv. Marina, twice- in stage of flower primordia and, two weeks later in stage of flower formation. The trial was set up in Bački Petrovac at experimental field of the IFVCNS, as completly randomized block design in three replicates. Sex ratio in the control plots was 37.11 to 62.89% in favor of femail plants. Although the ratio significantly changed with increase of applied Ethrel dosages (47.84 to 52.15 at maximal applied Ethrel concentration, 2.5 ml l-1), the total grain yield significantly decreased only if plants were treated with the highest dosage, 748.04 kg ha-1 compared to 836.81 kg ha-1 in control plots. Treated plants had shorter stems (276.78 cm and 233.84 cm in control and plants treated with 2.5 ml l-1 of Ethrel, respectively) with lower fiber content. The fiber content in these stems was by 8% lower (20.10%) compared to the stem fiber content of the control plants (28.25%). The applied Ethrel treatments had no statistically significant effect on the hemp stem diameter.

AB - As one of the most important raw materials for beer production, hop cones are boiled with wort so that the bitter, aromatic and tannic substances pass from the cones into the solution and give the wort its characteristic bitter taste and pleasant aroma. The addition of hops significantly determines beer quality parameters such as taste, biological stability and foam. The domestic assortment of hops includes the old, autochthonous variety Bačka, as well as two selected varieties Aroma and Robusta. In addition to substances that determine brewing quality parameters (content of α and β-acids, bitter substances, resins), pine cones of domestic varieties also contain essential oils - a fragrant, oily liquid that can be isolated using different techniques in laboratory and industrial conditions. Essential oil is a lipophilic mixture of products of the secondary metabolism of plants, which consists of several chemical compounds of the isoprenoid structure, including their derivatives (esters, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, etc.).

AB - One-year experiments conducted with one hemp variety were established to determinate the cultivation practices (growth density and pinching) which could be used to optimize the technological process of hemp varieties production for different purposes. The results showed that reduced crop density and pinching result in development of shorter plants. In denser non-pinched crops, the stem is over 180 cm high, while the plants start branching in the upper 1/4-1/5 part. In the non-pinched treatment with a larger area available for individual plants, as well as in the pinched treatments, more productive branches of less thickness develop in the lower parts. The non-pinched treatments generally produce higher stem and fiber yields, which increase when crop density is reduced. The obtained results can serve as a basis for determining certain treatments during the evaluation of production technology for different varieties of hemp intended for specific purposes.

AB - In order to define the most optimal technique for field trials that would allow broader exploration of the interaction of G x E x M (G - genotype, E - environmental conditions, M - crop management) in hemp seed production, one-year trials were set up with the typically dioecious hemp variety Marina. The trials included three different crop densities (20, 150, and 300 plants m2?) and the control unpinched variant which was compared with the apical bud removal treatment (pinching) at a plant height of 60 cm. The results showed that with pinching in all crop densities, a decrease in plant height and an increase in seed yield are achieved. The highest seed yields of over 1200 kg ha were achieved in the pinched crop with 20 and 150 plants m 2, which can be considered the optimal method for determining the yield potential of the genotype. The obtained results of the preliminary research will serve as a basis for recommendations for commercial hemp seeds production, as well as for defining the method for testing the wider germplasm in the hemp breeding programs.

AB - Several winter and spring alternative crops are grown in our country. Similar to the yield of staple field crops, the yield of minor cultivated crops is affected by complex climate-soil interactions, abiotic and biotic stress and cultivation technology. If grown solely for the production of plant raw materials (aboveground biomass, grain and/or root) for conversion into biofuels and bioenergy, the alternative crops are energy - crops. Although they have different botanical affiliations, morphologies and origins, energy - crops can be: oilseeds (oil rapeseed, camelina, white mustard, castor), starch-sugar (sorghum, Sudanese grass, corn) and lignocellulosic (miscanthus, hemp). From the point of view of agronomy, the prerequisite for increasing the area under energy - plant species for the production of biofuels in Serbia is the improvement of assortment, cultivation technology and mechanization. The paper provides an overview of agronomic forms and cultivation technology of several specific alternative plant species in the context of using crop biomass for energy purposes.

AB - The study was aimed at determining the most suitable irrigation schedule program for hemp grown for fibers by using evaporation from the free water surface (Eo), measured by a Class A pan and related crop plant coefficient (Kc). The experiment, carried out in Vojvodina, a northern part of the Republic of Serbia, included three irrigation regimes: I1, I2, and I3 corresponding, respectively, to daily evaporation from an open water surface (Eo), two interrow spacings: RS1 (12.5 cm) and RS2 (25 cm), and topped (T) and not topped (NT) variants. The Kc values used for the calculation of daily evapotranspiration (ETd) were 0.42 for April and May and 1.00 (I1), 0.80 (I2), and 0.60 (I3) from June to the harvest. In addition, the nonirrigated (Io) control variant was also included in the trial. The dioecious fiber hemp variety Marina was used for the trials. Irrigation was carried out by a drip irrigation system and was scheduled based on the water budget method. It started when readily available water (RAW) in the soil layer of 0.4 m was completely depleted by the plants. In the first year of the study, irrigation did not influence the yield of hemp fiber, but in the second one, the best result was achieved for the irrigation variant I1. Interrow spacing did not have a statistically significant effect on both the hemp fiber yield and the quality. The topping of plants significantly decreased the yield of hemp, and it is not recommended when the hemp is cultivated for fibers. The quality of the hemp fibers was not influenced by irrigation, inter-row spacing, and topping. The rate of hemp evapotranspiration was in an interval of 312 mm (ETa) to 520 mm (ETm). The highest values of IWUE and ETWUE in both years and the bark yield in the first year were detected for the I3 irrigation variant, which suggested that the crop plant coefficient (Kc) of 0.6 could be recommended for the correction of Eo values in the calculation of the daily evapotranspiration of hemp (ETd) from June to August. The yield response factor (Ky) with values of 0.22 and 0.60 for the total growing season reveals that, in rainy years, hemp for fiber production could be grown without irrigation in the temperate climate of the Vojvodina region. However, such years are rare. Without doubt, irrigation of fiber hemp is recommended in the mentioned region in order to obtain high yields of good quality product.
